Peachland Wine Shoppe owner retiring after two decades in wine DALE BOYD After over 20 years in the business Dave Taylor, owner of the Peachland Wine Shoppe, is ready to hand over the reigns and enjoy retirement. A winemaker for the past 24 years, Taylor originally set up shop in the Peachland mall in May of 1998, and since that time he estimates he has produced more than 50,000 batches of wine at the shop — roughly 1.5 million bottles. “When I first started I didn’t know the difference between a merlot and chardonnay,” Taylor laughed. “But I do now.” Taylor was one of the first tenants at the mall, and is the last remaining founding owner — though he switched spots to the current location in 2004.

Taylor opened up the original 700-square foot space in the mall as a second shop to compliment his first shop in Westbank. “I didn’t want a new competitor on my back doorstep. So I talked to the people that were building the mall, and we came to a deal,” Taylor said. He ended up selling the Westbank location to move the entirety of the winemaking operation to Peachland. “I move myself down here and my sales almost doubled two or three months after I moved here, and the shop that I was in became much, much too small. So after a while I wound up negotiating the deal on the space I’m in now, which is quite a bit bigger than what I had before,” Taylor said. Ordering wine may take a

bit longer than a quick trip to the store, but the quality and price are worth the wait for connoisseurs and Taylor’s loyal customers, he said. “It’s a lot cheaper than buying wine at the liquor store. And if it’s done properly, it’s just good are often better than what you’re

getting at the liquor store for a fraction of the price,” Taylor said. “There’s steps to follow to make the wine properly. It’s not that complicated if you do things the way you’re supposed to instead of cutting corners. It’s important to keep your equipment and your environment clean. So, we do

that. Not all shops do.” The new owner as of December, Ela Randelovic, plans to keep the quality of products up to Taylor’s standards, while putting her own mark on the space as it enters a new era. Originally from Serbia, Randelovic has been in the Kelowna area for over 20 years. Her husband a former vineyard and orchard owner, she has a lot of experience with wine and a history of customer service. “I like dealing with happy customers. When people are happy, they like the product that they are getting, that’s pretty much the best job ever. So that’s why this whole place really fit the bill,” Randelovic said. She called Taylor’s space “one of the best quality shops,” and she plans to keep it that way with the

same quality of wine and customer service regulars have come to rely on. “I do want to sort of give it a bit of a fresher outlook, a more cozy space, that’s my vision. I’d like to give it a bit of a facelift you know just make it more inviting make it more cozy have people sit down if they want to, things like that,” Randelovic said. “She’s got a lot of young ideas, which is what’s needed in here,” Taylor said. Travel, golf and a bit of work with non-profit societies are Taylor’s future plans. “Thank you ever so much to all my customers and friends for many years of loyalty and support. It’s been a pleasure and a lot of fun serving the people in this locality in Peachland and Westbank.I’m going to miss my customers and I’ll miss the business too.”

Those who drink Canada’s ‘milk and honey’ DALE BOYD There is a group of people out there. They come to this country, they take from this economy and offer little in return. They come from a foreign country with no regard for our rules, customs, laws and they use our infrastructure, our people, our government and send the money they make with our resources and from our consumers and ship it past our borders never to be seen again. These people operate under a different ideology and they will forward this ideology at any cost even if it means dismantling our government, economy and way of life. I hope you pass the racist test because I’m talking about Netflix, Google, Apple, Amazon and Facebook. People often say “shop local” and aim to eat organic foods grown nearby, but this mentality does not make the leap to local

newspapers or entertainment media. Would you really be “shopping local” if a U.S.-based conglomerate set up a fruit stand in town, sent the profits to the U.S., didn’t pay taxes and used your customer data freely? The same standard should be applied online or off. As a result of the Cambridge Analytica scandal Facebook recently agreed to pay nearly $643,000 in fines after Britain’s Information Commissioner Office brought charges forward for improperly using private user data exposing it to developers without the knowledge of users. The B.C. government recently said that Facebook is denying or rejecting recommendations from the province’s privacy commissioner. “Facebook has spent more than a decade expressing contrition for its actions and avowing its commitment to people’s privacy,” B.C. Information and Privacy Commission-

er Michael McEvoy said in a recent press release. “But when it comes to taking concrete actions needed to fix transgressions they demonstrate disregard.” The fines given in London are a pittance of a penalty for a company estimated to be worth over $60 billion. On top of that, Facebook has conducted unethical psychological experiments on its users as well, toying with emotions for research purposes and unethically altering user’s timelines to see if it affects behavior. Facebook has decided that Canadian and U.S. law is simply a debate to be had. “It is untenable that organizations are allowed to reject my office’s legal findings as mere opinions,” said Privacy Commissioner of Canada, Daniel Therrien. The painful irony is this column will get read more if I put it on Facebook and we news organizations use the platform to give important infor-

mation to our audience while it simultaneously devours our revenues. It varies by region, but a lot of Okanagan web traffic is Facebook-based. We have “loop” pages in the South Okanagan which essentially act like local newsletters and share advertisements, events and local happenings. What is missing is boots-on-the-ground or in-depth reporting, and it is notable these groups often share and discuss local news. They also fall into the trap of the local rumour mill. Information can be dangerous and there is an extra responsibility for reporters, less so on the public who won’t lose their job for spreading misinformation — a standard sorely missing from these local community pages at times. So the next time you worry about Canada’s “milk and honey,” maybe focus on the people who are actually pilfering it while we press the “like” button.

COMMUNITY

Response to rainbow crosswalk or sidewalk coming to Peachland Re: Peter Diniz I was shocked by the content of your letter. Your statements express prejudice (definition: preconceived opinion that is not based on reason or actual experience) towards our town and its citizens. I find this offensive! By your own words, you have confirmed this prejudice when you wrote, in essence – after driving around the Okanagan for three years looking for a place to settle, you kept coming back to Peachland. To quote you, “Then one day we noticed, unlike all the other communities in the Okanagan, Peachland was missing a rainbow crosswalk. This made us step back a bit and wonder if Peachland

was the right community for us.” You knew prior to coming to Peachland that we did not have a rainbow x-walk, why then would you choose us over other communities that met your criteria? It seems to me you had an agenda. It appears that in the 10 short months you have been a resident, you have worked diligently toward having a rainbow x-walk here and were informed by some means that Council was sitting on the fence regarding this issue. It appears that council’s indecision gave you the opportunity to give them a nudge to vote in your favour, except for Coun. Condon. I agree 100 per cent with Mr. Condon’s logic in his opposition to a

rainbow x-walk. To quote Condon, “Because I see the rainbow crosswalk as being an exclusive symbol of LGBTQ+ and it doesn’t, by that very nature, include others.” Just to let you know, there are and have been gays in our community for decades. Obviously they felt Peachland was a safe and welcoming place as some I know of stayed for more than 25-plus years (perhaps you would consider them out of date, too). They were not pretentious or arrogant nor, to my knowledge, did they make demands of this nature (demand definition: an insistent and peremptory request, made as if by right). They merely integrated into the community without

Correction In the Nov. 22 edition of the Peachland View the article “Ministry to present preferred option for Highway 97 bypass Tuesday” incorrectly stated the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure (MoTI) would visit Peachland district council on Nov. 26. The date of the meeting was moved to an unspecified date later this year. The View was made aware of the date change after the paper’s print deadline. The View apologizes for any confusion.

grandstanding (definition: the action of behaving in a showy or ostentatious manner in an attempt to attract favorable attention from spectators) You state that a “rainbow sidewalk will show Peachland is a safe and welcoming place.” Really? Are you saying our town is not

ADCANADA MEDIA INC R0011756810 PV01

safe and welcoming now, but on completion of the sidewalk/x-walk we will be magically transformed? Good grief, where’s the logic?! We are not missing a rainbow sidewalk/x-walk, as you suggest, we simply have never needed one --- until you arrived and made an issue of it! That is your ‘need’ not the community’s.

If this is an equal opportunity town, I suggest it is appropriate for me, if I choose, to lobby council to request a HETEROSEXUAL sidewalk/x-walk which would be more inclusive than the rainbow sidewalk/x-walk. I will ponder on that. Tricia Darby, Peachland

NEWS

Rotary mural defaced again, RCMP file opened as police seek tips DALE BOYD The Rotary mural in downtown Peachland is once again in need of repair after it was defaced by spray paint for the second time in two months. Multiple black, spray-painted marks depicting a black sun, question marks and what appears to be an additional Ogopogo showed up on the mural Nov. 26, following a similar event in October. Peachland Community Arts Council president Deborah Livingstone is at a loss as to why the mural was vandalized again. “To be honest, we were quite shocked that it was that it was targeted,” Livingstone said. In the mural’s 20-year history, the last two months are the only time the piece has been defaced to this degree. “The only thing that had happened in the past was there were a couple of tags on it. It’s the same tag as the whoever did the ones on the piers. They weren’t large and they were sort of in an out-of-the-way spot so we just kind of left them for all that time and they had never been touched since,” Livingstone said. The two instances of vandalism come after a summer of restoration work on the mural completed by six volunteer artists with the local arts council putting in roughly 178 hours of volunteer work. “Its destructive, but it’s different than tagging something. That’s completely different, or even graffiti, I totally understand those types of things. This is more just some destruction here,” Livingstone said.

Intention to Apply for a Disposition of Crown Land

Until recently, there was no complaint filed with the RCMP following the vandalism in October according to Peachland Community Police president Gary Hedge. However, Peachland resident Dave Johnston told the View he has made the police complaint necessary to open a file with the RCMP, and those who wish to call Crime Stoppers can now make anonymous tips regarding the mural. “Parents need to talk to their kids and ask them if they know because theres a Crime Stoppers file and

parents can call in,” Johnston said. The investigation has stalled for community police until there is further information from the public, Hedge said. “It’s come to a standstill,” Hedge said. “I’m sad to say it’s sort of a dead issue unless somebody comes forward.” Instead of the public posting to Facebook, instances of vandalism or other crimes should be directly reported to the RCMP first, Hedge said. Livingstone and the arts council are hoping the

public can assist an investigation as well, or even simply provide some basic answers. “Sometimes things like this, somebody will say something or know something. And we would appreciate it, even if we don’t find out who did it. Even if we just found out why,” Livingstone said. Anyone with information on either incident is urged to contact Peachland Community Police at 250-767-2623 and can now contact Crime Stoppers to leave an anonymous tip at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).

Rotary: looking back on the year, and ahead to the holidays ROTARY CLUB OF PEACHLAND Well! It seems as though we were just getting over the Pier Grand Opening in May – and now here we are beginning the countdown to Christmas! What a year! November has been Foundation month for Rotary. Foundation is the engine that Rotary International has put in place to ensure that there will always be funds to assist with the projects Rotarians discover as they go about their daily lives. The Foundation consists of three Funds: Annual, Endowment and Polio. Rotarians contribute from their own pockets to sustain the Endowment fund, which, as its name suggests, is a collection of all the monies given to Rotary International through endowments from members, in their wills. The money given in this way is never spent: only the interest is used to support Rotary projects. The Polio Fund, which I talked about last month, uses 100% of the money donated for Polio eradication. The Annual Fund is the most important fund and is solely supported by Rotary members. The money is held for three years, earning interest to pay administrative costs for the Foundation, and then is released each year through a system of Global and District Grants to help clubs with their service projects at home and abroad. When we “do” a fundraiser, 100% of the money raised goes to the project identified as the focus. If we apply for a District Grant from the Annual Fund, those are Rotarian dollars coming back to support what is raised locally, usually on a one for one basis. Rotary International has won many awards for being the most transparent charity, in how monies are dealt with and

also for having one of the lowest “administrative” costs of any charity. Currently it is ranked #1 by Charity Navigator, alongside MAP International and DirectAid. I know: boring stuff, but if you think about it for a moment Rotarians do put their “money where their mouth” is, by fund raising for projects that benefit our communities and loved ones. You only have to look around your own local community to find evidence of that focus and dedication, in parks, playgrounds, water parks, exercise equipment, band-shells, piers, theatre buildings, hospital annexes and equipment or town clocks. Elementary school playgrounds, libraries and in class equipment and materials such as smartboards, textbooks and learning materials are all things contributed by your local Rotary Club. Often, scholarships and programmes such as Adventures in Citizenship, Forestry, Tourism and International Youth Exchange keep young people engaged and focussed on continuing their education, opening new ideas and career paths for inquisitive young minds. Rotarians support and organise programmes such as the Starfish programme which provides a little extra every week for those who find that the month is always longer than the budget. Food Banks get built, organised and supported by Rotarians – remember the one in Winfield/ Lake Country, BC a couple of years back? Your

local Rotary Club does a great deal, with your help, both locally and internationally. Water, sanitation, education and self-sufficiency are the focuses which drive infrastructure projects abroad. Amelioration of condition, for the blind and lame and otherwise disadvantaged, are also addressed with projects driven by caring, individual Rotarians. Renovating Miraj High School in India and supporting the Volcanes Education Programme in Mexico, are two such projects your local Club in Peachland is supporting. And then, there’s ShelterBox www.shelterboxcanada.org Enough! In a new segment called “Who’s Who in the Rotary Zoo in Peachland!” (Thanks Jane!) I will introduce Club members, so that when you join us for lunch you won’t feel quite so alone! Our Secretary, Linda, is a dynamo of information, experience and laughter. She takes minutes at our Executive meetings and reminds us of the things we have forgotten or put off. She has been a much needed Energiser Bunny: we just hope she keeps on going ... and going ... We need her laugh and sense of fun! The whole Club join me in wishing you and yours a very Merry and Happy Christmas and hope we shall see you at Light-Up on Dec. 6 and again at the Polar Bear Swim on Jan. 1. Brrr! There is so much more, but never enough space – If you’d like to find out more, visit our website w w w.peachla ndrota r y. com or, better yet, join us at the Gasthaus at 11:45 a.m. on Thursdays: we are really friendly!

Bear reports higher than four-year average in Peachland and area DALE BOYD In 2019 Peachland and the surrounding area saw higher than average black bear reports made to WildSafeBC. Meg Bjordal, WildSafeBC community coordinator, presented an overview of human-wildlife conflicts this year to district council at the committee of the whole on Nov. 26. This year, up to Nov. 15, there were 271 black bear reports made to authorities in communities on the west side of Okanagan Lake. Not yet a full year of data, the number is already higher

than the four-year average for the area of 221 reports. “Black bear reports continue to show a seasonal trend in Okanagan-Westside communities with increased conflicts in the spring and fall, with September being the month of highest conflict,” Bjordal said. “However, just a general observation of mine this season, is that in Peachland the bear conflict was the worst in the spring, mostly during the month of May this year.” Peachland and the surrounding area saw a decrease of deer reports in 2019 following a steady in-

crease over the past three years. “Garbage continues to be the number one attractant, however, I suspect fruit trees are underreported as an attractant,” Bjordal said.“They are just as much a concern as garbage because when wildlife find these unnatural food sources in our back yards they can become food-conditions. So they will keep coming back and eventually start associating people with food which causes habituation. At this point they lose their natural fear of people.” In response to the bear numbers Bjordal said she conducted a lot of door-todoor education efforts and tagged garbage cans put out early to let the owners know how to stay bear aware. Bjordal said a total of 325 garbage bins were

left out on the curb the night before collection day in Peachland. “I placed an educational sticker reminding residents that garbage put out early is a wildlife attractant, or spoke with the homeowner,” Bjordal said. She repeated a route this year through Peachland and saw a 42 per cent reduction in the amount of garbage bins left out the night before collection on her second time through the route. “That was really exciting to see that the garbage tagging was indeed raising awareness,” Bjordal said. She also recommended a bear hazard assessment for Peachland which would go above and beyond the duties of WildSafeBC to address root causes of high levels of human-bear conflicts. “I do acknowledge the

human-bear conflicts and I do work on addressing them but this is on an ad-hoc basis and does not provide the more thorough assessment and long-term planning that is needed that could be changed with the aid of a bear hazard assessment,” Bjordal said. Coun. Pete Coolio asked Bjordal about the prospect of bear-resistant garbage cans, which Bjordal said was something the regional district has purview over. There is a pilot program currently testing the bins in the Lake Country area. “I have done everything I can from my end to support that and provide them with information. So, at the moment it is just in the pilot phase with a small amount of bins,” Bjordal said. She said there are plans to obtain more bear-resistant (not bear-proof, an import-

ant distinction) bins for the area, but the bins need to go through a certification process which involves contact with actual bears. “It’s important that certified bear-resistant bins are used. So that’s bins that area actually tested with contact with bears, in order to ensure they are resistant,” Bjordal said. “So that is in the works. I’m hopeful these bins will be more widely available in the future.” She said the bear-resistant garbage containers would make a “huge difference” with roughly 62 per cent of all wildlife reports made to conservation officers involving garbage. “If we look back through the data, garbage continues to be roughly 60 to 70 per cent, and the main attractant,” Bjordal said.

This gorgeous flat faced girl was initially found as a stray. Soon after being found she gave birth to two adorable kittens. Peach was a very protective mom so we have not been able to spend much time with her to learn her natural personality. We know she is a very sweet when her kittens are not around. She may need an indoor/ outdoor home and probably without any other animals.

PWPA review 2019 highlights and look forward at annual meeting WATERSHED PROTECTION ALLIANCE Almost half of the Peachland Watershed Protection Alliance (PWPA) membership joined with the public, invitees and guest speakers on Nov. 21 to celebrate another year of source water advocacy and activities. While our council’s top priorities remain: the sewer extension, downtown revitalization, a highway bypass and a splash park; PWPA’s focus remains source water protection. This summer we were buoyed when council unanimously endorsed a letter to the Ministry of Forests Lands and Natural Resources asking for a pause in watershed clear cutting, something many community and Indigenous members have also been advocating for in this basin. Truly a highlight of 2019. While continuing to focus on a $24 million-plus water treatment plant, council will alleviate most of the turbidity issues for human water consumption, but “at-the-taps” treatment does not address nor can it prevent dirty water caused by excessive rainfall, wildfire debris and mudslides. Nor can a WTP protect us from extreme weather events, drought, water storage and delivery issues, damaged fish habitat or water quality for fish and wildlife. Only source water protection can ensure watershed biodiversity and the continued overall health of ecosystem services Another PWPA highlight suggested by one of our council members for our AGM was this year’s UBCM

resolution B-156 for forestry. Local governments proposed adopting a new model of regionally-based forestry management that will empower local communities Our council has experienced that lack of authority and power local governments and regional districts have when it comes to jurisdiction over unmonitored activities in their watersheds, while forced to legally supply clean drinking water. Our council has no say in activities that dirty this same water. A resolution for community-based decision making in regards to industrial activities in a community watersheds will begin to equalize this imbalance. A final high point of 2019 was the reassurance that a bypass through our upper drainage basin is no longer being supported by government, First Nations or environmentalists. After years of consultations and meetings the PWPA is pleased the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure have reached this decision. Amongst the low points we experienced this year working in watershed advocacy was the expansion of local mining exploration continuing at the Amarillo site near Peachland’s drinking water reservoir at Glen Lake in our Summerland and Peachland headwaters. In fact, mining claim owners Troubadour have very recently expanded their claims by 519 hectares to Amarillo claim, bringing the total to 4,697 hectares

even though Indigenous and local governments do not fully support the idea. While the Summerland mayor said she was disappointed in their expansion, some of her council is in support of mining in their community watershed and called her concerns premature. We wish to offer those councillors Peachland as an example of the legacy of open pit mining in a bedroom community; after barley 19 years and only a average of 300 labour jobs, when the mine closed in Peachland we have been left with an eyesore, environmental damage, mudslides, temporary tailings dam and tailing ponds draining into our community water supply. Had it not been for the insistence of some of our PWPA members almost 30 years ago and the public surveillance committee formed by these local residents, Noranda would have shut down their operation without building a water treatment plant at the mine site for further discharging. The long-term costs to a community and its environment are often not worth the short-term jobs created. Mt. Polley is a perfect example. The taxpayer is now on the hook for their $35 million clean up. In all of B.C. only 14 mines have installed a WTP. PWPA is also disappointed in the Forestry Practices Board investigation results of logging in our watersheds; while finding past logging had damaged our watershed and water quality, the government investigators could not

confirm if current logging or climate change could be the cause; there is insufficient data. PWPA is continuing to study the effects of clear cut harvesting in a community drinking watershed, though forestry companies are doing their minimum requirements to keep source water safe for human consumption (as long as it enters treatment), water above the intake is not treatable and therefore its safety for fish, wildlife, vegetation and overall watershed health is very questionable. As 2020 unfolds, the PWPA looks forward to working with the indigenous community on all watershed protection measures especially this Syilx led forestry planning process. In 2020 our goals remain: work with first nations and local governments in asking for a pause on clear cuts until a full watershed health assessment is completed in order to measure the function-ability and resiliency of this watershed and identify of all ecosystems services supplied including flood protection, wildfire and disease prevention, wildlife habitat, recreational opportunities and water supply are intact. We can no longer support the province’s vision of multi industrial usage of a community watershed; protective watershed zoning enjoyed by jurisdictions like Vancouver and Victoria is the obvious solution. If the government saw fit to protect food, food security, farms and farm lands from developments with

Peachland Chamber moving to new location in spring of 2020 After five years in Peachland’s Historic Schoolhouse, the Peachland Chamber of Commerce is moving south. The new chamber home will be five blocks from its current location at the schoolhouse, relocating to 5878 Beach Ave. across from Heritage Park. Founding and Naming Partner: TNI The Network Inc. together with founding partner New Monaco are set to welcome chamber members

to the much-expanded array of facilities in the new “TNI Chamber 2.0 Business Centre,” the chamber said in a press release. Corporate partners have already expressed support for the new business hub including TD Benefits, Vantage One Credit Union and Xocolicious. “As we speak more corporate partnerships are materializing. There are different levels of corporate partnership and a quick email to

peachla ndcha mber@ gmail.com will give you all you need to know about officially getting involved and being ‘pioneers’ of this new venture. Join the following Chamber members who have already donated time or gave a donation: Murray Wood, Darlene Hartford, Greg Sewell, Dave Collins, Cam Banman, Nicole Moreau, Larry Guilbault, Fran Sewell, Walks, Wags and Watch, Todd’s RV and Camping and A Step Above Inspections,” the

chamber stated. The renovation work has started and primarily done by in-kind labour, donated material and cash donations. The board of Directors under the leadership of vice president Murray Wood, who took the task as contractor upon himself, has been working diligently for the past two weeks according to the chamber. “They can only do so much so we are requesting help. If you are handy and have some spare time

please let us know,” the chamber stated in the press release. The TNI Chamber 2.0 Business Centre is billed as a meeting spot for businesses and residents alike — an economic development centre and information hub for the Peachland Community. There will be two multi-functional spaces suitable for: meetings, training, conferences, workshops, seminars and more. There are currently

three office spaces for rent, starting at $650 per month. The chamber noted the new facilities will provide networking opportunities including including a member information wall, developments information wall and a Peachland information wall. From June 15 through Sept. 15 there will be a Peachland information booth and gift store on the outside patio and Indoor Winter Markets from October through April.

COMMUNITY

Community partners hosting free Christmas dinner for the holidays PEACHLAND WELLNESS CENTRE

thanks to the incredible generosity of individuals and local businesses, PWC, in partnership with the Legion and the 50+ Centre come together to host a Christmas dinner. Last year, the Dec. 25 dinner was attended by over 100 community members. We anticipate the same number (plus) this year! This dinner is free, but you do need to get a ticket (this allows us to plan). This dinner is so very important. Just as the holiday season can be full of love and joy for many, it can also be a time of incredible stress and desperate loneliness for others. While the majority of us may have families with whom we share the holidays, there are many of us that do not. This is when living in a compassionate and inclusive community means so much. Do you know if your neighbours have family visiting or other holiday plans? If you haven’t already, perhaps take a moment to check-in with them. Consider having them join you and your family for some of the festivities, and/or let them know about the Community

As many of you may be aware, The Peachland Wellness Centre (PWC) provides programs and services that connect people through support, education, information, referral and outreach. PWC programs and services are developed and delivered in collaboration with other community members, organizations, local businesses and the District. We are a small but mighty organization fueled by the hard work of volunteers and small group of staff. Presently we have over 180 volunteers who work with the staff to deliver a wide variety of programs and services to the community. We offer everything from transportation services for medical appointments etc., as well as support groups for caregivers and those grieving the loss of loved ones. Our Sunday morning breakfasts continue to be a big hit, and our men’s and women’s card groups and coffee drop-ins remain as popular as ever. Every Christmas,

dinner. If you find yourself alone on the 25th, please join us! It is always a wonderful time! I have learned in my three years living in Peachland that we Peachlanders are a feisty bunch! We will speak our mind and double-down on issues that matter to us. We are also a community that is built on a strong foundation of compassion and kindness. The vast majority of us would step-up to help the same neighbour we were passionately disagreeing with the day before! This compassion and kindness can also be further woven through everything we do as a community. Since its inception, PWC has included a rainbow in its logo design. You can see it woven into the roof of the little house that represents PWC. This rainbow was chosen as a symbol of inclusion, diversity, joy and hope. Council has recently voted in favour of a rainbow sidewalk in our little town. While it is true that the gay movement originally adopted a rainbow flag as a symbol of their fight for equality,

the rainbow symbol has taken on a much larger role in the fight for inclusion for ALL people the world over. No matter someone’s race, ethnicity, be they able-bodied or disabled, gay or straight, the rainbow sidewalk lets people know that all are welcome in our town. What a wonderful symbol for us to adopt! We want to hear from you. If you would like to learn more about what we do, wish to volunteer, suggest some programming or make a donation, please give us a call. Or better yet, drop-in for a chat. The coffee is always on! From all of us at PWC, we offer you the best of the holidays. Stay warm, stay healthy, have fun!
