New visitor centre manager JOANNE LAYH If you find yourself downtown drop into the Peachland Historic School and say hello to Peachland’s newest visitor centre manager, Trina Shields. Shields joined the visitor centre a couple weeks ago and is excited to greet visitors. “When this position came up, I was really thrilled to apply,” Shields told the View. “It’s the perfect location, perfect job. All of my previous history seems to all be part of this role and I’m just thrilled.” Shields has roots planted in Peachland going back over 35 years, when her family moved to Peachland. No matter where she’s lived, she’s always considered Peachland her home and is now proud to say she permanently reside here again. Shields is still amazed at the beauty Peachland has to offer, as well as the many outdoor activities all year round, where she loves exploring hidden adventures. The Peachland Visitor Centre has several new initiatives planned for the spring and summer 2021 season, such as their Historic Peachland Walking Tour, which will be part of the upcoming HeARTS Festival events. They’re also expanding their gift shop with unique Peachland branded items and additional displays to make the shop more profitable. “We also want to focus on the website more than ever, just to get that message out there so that if the COVID continues at least we can provide that information to them,” said Shields. “Because of COVID of course, all of those numbers have dropped drastically, but I do know that compared to other communities, we’re still seeing pretty good numbers because we are located on the water, it’s an historical building that people are attracted to and that brings in a lot of visitors. That’s really positive, so we know people are still visiting our community.” Shields says what really is exciting is the Peachland Visitor Centre has recently joined the newly formed Visit South

Okanagan Alliance (VSOA), a tourism initiative that aims to help restart local economies in the South Okanagan as well as Peachland. “What we really want to do is help each community as well, not just ourselves, because in response, they’re going to promote us as well,” said Shields. “It’s a challenge right now for everybody because what we want to do and what we can do is to be determined in the next few months, but our goal is to rebrand the visitor centre and just make it more appealing to people to come in,” said Shields. Shields says even with COVID-19, the Peachland Visitor Centre and Peachland Art Gallery are vital assets to our community. “We are following strict COVID-19 guidelines, yet our local area residents still need our facility as a safe escape and positive experience. The Peachland Art Gallery continues to showcase new events and local art exhibits, which attracts many people to our downtown core and in turn help support our local businesses.” Anyone interested in volunteering at the Peachland Visitor Centre is invited to contact Shields at vcmanager@visitpeachland.com. A new dining experience is coming to the Peachland area on May 1, when 19 Okanagan Grill + Bar is set to open a second restaurant at Fitzpatrick Family Vineyards, named 19 Bistro @ Fitz. The bistro will be open for daily lunch and dinner service and will focus on fresh pizzas prepared in the brick wood fired oven, and dishes that showcase the ingredients grown and created by local farmers and producers, all crafted to pair with Fitzpatrick wines. In addition to a selection of hand-crafted

pizzas, the bistro will also offer a tapas menu and entrees. The new restaurant will take the place of the Fitz Bistro. “I am very excited to join the effervescent team at Fitzpatrick Family Vineyards. 19 Bistro @ Fitz will open our amazing patio on May 1, 2021 with the goal of providing an approachable, yet sophisticated wine country experience for all of our guests,” said 19 Bistro @ Fitz owner/general manager Neil Martens. The property features an expansive patio directly overlooking the picturesque Okanagan Lake with a panoramic view.

Heritage outbreak over PEACHLAND VIEW On Feb. 2 Interior Health declared the outbreak at The Heritage Retirement Residence in West Kelowna over. “I want to thank the staff for their commitment and dedication during this outbreak,” said Susan Brown, Interior Health president and CEO. “With all the extra precautions, staff continue to ensure the people living there received the best possible care. On behalf of everyone at Interior Health, we send our condolences to the families who lost a loved one during this difficult time.” Interior Health considers an outbreak over when two incubation periods, or 28 days, have passed from the last onset of symptoms in a resident. “I’m happy to declare another COVID-19 outbreak over,” said Dr. Albert de Villiers, chief medical health officer. “It’s encouraging to have staff and residents at long-term care and assisted living receive their first dose of the vaccine.” All eligible residents and staff at The Heritage Retirement Residence have been offered their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccination. Forty-six COVID-19 cases (41 residents and five staff), including four deaths, were connected to outbreak, which began on Dec. 22.

US decision provides opportunities for Canada The many articles about President Joe Biden’s cancellation of the Keystone XL pipeline have run the gamut from hand wringing to anger that the president would do such a thing to its most important trading partner. Virtually none, except for Adam Radwanski (Globe and Mail, 2019), have mentioned the opportunities for Canada in this decision. The opportunity for Canada and the provinces to get the finger out and begin to treat the climate crisis as a real crisis. The opportunity to make serious investments in renewable energy as Canada emerges from the pandemic, many of which could be made in concert with the oil and gas industry if Canada develops its large geothermal energy potential. The opportunity to stop wasting billions of tax payers’ dollars propping up an industry that must die (Are you listening, Pre-

mier Horgan, with your billion dollar subsidies to LNG?). The opportunity to become a climate leader in reality instead of stumbling along far behind most industrialized countries with the second or third worst record of GHG emissions per capita. The timing could not be better. Canada finally has a decent climate plan and, when passed, Bill C-12 will require the federal government to set and meet five-year GHG reduction targets. Alberta, Saskatchewan, and B.C. have very high potential for wind, solar, and geothermal energy production. The only thing standing in the way is government recalcitrance bolstered by oil industry lobbying. Canadians want it. The world needs it. Let’s get on board Mr. Trudeau and Mr. Horgan. Michael Healey, professor emeritus, UBC

Will the federal NDP blow it again? Six years ago, the federal NDP were poised to form the next government, and they blew it. The next election they will be granted a rare second chance, and an incredible opportunity to realize two of their major policy objectives: Get rid of that un-elected, un-democratic and dysfunctional Senate, and give us what we desperately have been wanting for a very long time – a proportional ballot Today’s Senators are randomly appointed

people, not seasoned, experienced politicians, while proportional representation (PR) provides balance and stability, by uniting our diverse and complex multi-cultural society. PR is also the only electoral system that satisfies our charter rights to have governments that represents everybody fairly. It will also transform Canada into a strong and cohesive socio-economic unit and be an incredible entry in our history books. Are they going to blow it again? Andy Thomsen, Kelowna

Peachland Chamber hosts developer and Cautionary tales from construction virtual roundtable meeting a skeptical resident

IMAGE PEACHLAND CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

A total of 24 stakeholders participated in a recent Peachland Chamber of Commerce Developers Roundtable Meeting via Zoom.

GREG SEWELL, P. ENG

PRESIDENT, PEACHLAND CHAMBER OF COMMERCE BOARD OF DIRECTORS The Peachland Chamber of Commerce advocates for its business members to foster a favourable economic environment. Recently members of our development and building community expressed frustration with processing delays experienced with Peachland’s Planning and Development Services department. Hence, the chamber decided to schedule another Developers Roundtable Meeting via Zoom to discuss this matter in more detail. This meeting was held on January 18, with 24 stakeholders participating. It proved to be a productive forum to provide feedback to the District of Peachland regarding how the planning and permitting process works for the district’s development customers. Based on the development community’s feedback, a detailed report was drafted and issued to the CAO of the District of Peachland on January 29. As a result, we are pleased to announce that we have established a positive communication line with the District of Peachland. We look forward to working together for the betterment of the Peachland development community in the immediate future.

None of us would be happy to have a zero lot line, five-storey tower right next to us when we are in our RR1 single family residence. Maybe we should consider the people in RR1 homes a little more than the builders looking to make maximum profit. This 13th St. development should not be rezoned to what the developer wants. This development should be what Peachlanders want. This should be lower density, three-storey maximum, no zero lot line next to single detached residential homes, and to ensure enough parking on this property for everybody living there. Developers have not been all that good for Peachlanders in the past. The developers that build Eagle’s View (the condos with the retaining wall that you can see from space) had, to my recollection, such a huge burn pile going that the sparks from this fire went all the way up to the Ponderosa Golf Course and ended up burning the beautiful log structure clubhouse and restaurant to the ground! Then a while later developers at the golf course promised to build a signature golf course, but first needed to build and sell some condos before getting the golf course started. The original people living on the golf course paid a premium price for their homes because these homes backed onto a beautiful, maintained green-space golf course. Now these homes back onto a dirty, dead eyesore of a landscape and the nine holes that were on the other side of Ponderosa Drive are a total mess. It now looks like an old gravel pit that has been turned into a dump. New development is good for Peachland, as long as it is done thoughtfully, with lower density that will keep in line with a peaceful quiet community. Al Bykowsky, Peachland

Leisure activities may be widely viewed as fun ways to fill up free time, but the benefits of leisure activities extend beyond beating boredom. A 2011 analysis published in the journal BBA Molecular Basis of Disease found that leisure activities have a positive impact on cognitive function and dementia. The analysis, conducted by researchers with the Aging Research Centre in Stockholm who examined various studies regarding the relationship between certain activities and cognitive function, defined leisure activity as the voluntary use of free time for activities outside the home. After retirement, leisure time constitutes a large part of many retirees’ lives, and finding ways to fill that time is more beneficial than merely avoiding boredom. The researchers behind the study concluded that the existing research is insufficient to draw any firm conclusions regarding the effects of certain types of leisure activities on the risk for dementia and cognitive decline, though they did note that multi-domain cognitive training has the potential to improve cognitive function in healthy older adults and slow decline in affected individuals. A multi-domain approach to cognitive training involves memory, reasoning, problem-solving, and map reading, among other activities. Aging adults who embrace activities that require the use of such skills may find that they’re not only finding stimulating ways to fill their free time, but increasing their chances of longterm cognitive health as well.

COMMUNITY

Drive-By Hot Chocolate event and “support our restaurants” campaign next up from the Peachland Recovery Task Force

JOANNE LAYH A drive-by hot chocolate event on Valentine’s Day is the latest pick me up for Peachland residents brought to you by the Peachland Recovery Task Force. “The idea is to do something to pick up the spirits of people in Peachland again,” said Peachland Recovery Task Force member Rick Ingram. “We figured a hot chocolate event on Valentine’s Day would be just the thing.” Residents are invited to drive by the community centre on Valentine’s Day between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., roll down their window (wearing a mask), and receive hot chocolate to warm their heart and spirit. “We know there are some people that can’t come down and would like to participate, so for them we’re going to do a delivery of a make-at-home, so we’ll bring them a mug with some hot chocolate and marshmallows and drop it off at their house so they can participate as well,” Ingram told the View. Those who can’t drive to get hot chocolate can register with the Peachland Wellness Centre, who will deliver a

‘make-at-home’ hot chocolate package to them. The hot chocolate event is being graciously supported by realtor Larry Guilbault of Coldwell Banker. There is no charge to participate, but the task force is gratefully accepting donations to help with their next event, which will be a “support our restaurants” campaign. For two months, anytime people go to a restaurant or order take out they’ll be entered into a draw for every $20 they spend. “To encourage people to do things to support restaurants, on Mondays to Thursdays for every $10 you spend you’ll get an entry,” Ingram said. “We want to kick it off as soon as we can because the restaurants are struggling now.” Meanwhile, the task force is also encouraging residents to put hearts in their windows for Valentine’s Day to help raise spirits in the community. “It would be really nice to show how Peachland has heart if every house in Peachland could make sure they put a heart in their window,” said Ingram. “If you walk down the street and see hearts in every window it will make you feel better.”

Kelowna SPCA

Name: Baker Age: 1 year old ID: 523384 American Bulldog

Baker is an interesting combination of Party Guy and Shy Guy. While he loves to play and cuddle and go for walks, Baker is also quite unsure of new things and situations. He needs a home that has the time to calmly introduce him to all things that have not crossed his path before. Baker is not a dog for a first time dog owner.
