Three Bronze Awards for Hainle Winery at this year’s nationals JOANNE LAYH Peachland residents interested in trying some award-winning wines need look no further than Hainle Vineyards Estate Winery, which recently took home three awards from the WineAlign National Wine Awards of
Canada. The competition marks the twentieth anniversary of these awards and was the biggest yet with 2,075 entries from 260 different wineries across Canada. “It is very important for us because we did a renovation last year and we also got a new team to make new wines. We

know we’ve had very positive feedback from the local people. They love our wine and say the new wine is so delicious,” winery owner Bella Huang told the View. “So, we thought we need to send the wine to the competition to see what the judges say.” The 2020 Cuvée, 2020 Happiness, and 2020 Pinot Gris, created by winemaker Scott Ingram, were each honoured with a Bronze Award. Huang said Happiness is one of the best sellers in the wine shop and there is a limited quality of both the Happiness and Pinot Gris so if residents are interested in getting some bottles for their collection, they should pick them up

At a trade show in Shanghai Hainle representatives Roy Wang and Sandy Chen (shown left to right) met with Douglas Bingeman, Trade Commissioner for Canada at Global Affairs Canada, Jason Reeve, Deputy Consul General and Senior Trade Commissioner at Global Affairs Canada, and David Murphy, Consul General of Canada in Shanghai. sooner rather than later to avoid disappointment. “It’s important that it is local, and also, we have local artist Richard Smith creating the local scenery wine labels, so that’s exciting,” said Huang.
Both the 2020 Cuvée and 2020 Pinot Gris are white wines that feature Smith’s artwork, while the 2020 Happiness is a sparkling wine with label artwork by Kelowna’s Hong Qi Lu.
Huang, a Peachland Chamber of Commerce director, has also been busy making strides in exporting her Peachland-made wine to other markets. For the second year in a row Hainle’s wines were presented in Shanghai at the China International Import Expo (CIIE), an import-themed national level expo. Huang said only quality products can get into the exhibition, so a lot of buyers from the China market are excited to attend the show. “We were the first ice wine producer and first organic winery in Canada, and when people in the China market think about wine from Canada, they think about ice wine,” said Huang. Hainle recently created some new ice wine blends specifically for the China market that are a bit sweeter and have a higher alcohol percentage, including an ice rosé as well as their Force wine, which has 18.5 per cent alcohol content. “It’s blended, so it’s not so expensive and we get the price very reasonable,” said Huang. Huang’s efforts in exploring export markets are paying off; she recently signed a $1 million MOU that will result in more of her wine on Chinese shelves.

Council briefs: flood mitigation, Light Up, Breakfast with Santa, and Brenda Renewables JOANNE LAYH Central Okanagan flood mitigation
Earlier this year the Regional District of Central Okanagan (RDCO) hired consultants to undertake a regional flood mitigation planning project. The project’s focus was on non-structural flood mitigation options for the region, as opposed to structural flood mitigation actions, which are more “engineered” works. Last week Peachland council was presented with the resulting flood resource guide for RCDO member municipalities, which includes 26 options for reducing risk through land stewardship, reducing local exposure to flood hazards through land use manage-
ment, and reducing local vulnerability with building strategies and regulations. The District of Peachland was encouraged to join a working group with other member municipalities to help create policy consistency and foster a collaborative approach to flood issues within the region.
Breakfast with Santa on Dec. 4 from 9 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. Children and their families will be treated to breakfast, entertainment, crafts and activities, and a visit with Santa. Registration is also through the recreation department.
Light Up the Block
Peachland council members were recently invited to tour the Brenda Mines site where the proposed Brenda Renewables project will be situated. “I have to say I’m getting a lot more comfortable with the whole idea now,” said Coun. Keith Fielding. “I think it is going to be a very responsible project. I think all of our watershed issues are pretty much protected in the plans that they are putting forward.”
Director of community services Cheryl Wiebe said plans are underway to host a pandemic-friendly Christmas Light Up event, Light Up the Block. Peachland residents can book a mini pop-up party in their neighbourhood on Dec. 3 or 4 by contacting the recreation department.

Coun. Terry Condon said he also came away with a greater level of comfort with the project. Coun. Patrick Van Minsel went
further and said he was very impressed with the tour and is confident in supporting the project. Mayor Cindy Fortin said
she is “becoming more and more a fan of theirs” and hopes they can use local yard waste in their production.

Rights and freedoms come with responsibilities I was deeply saddened by the disrespectful disruption of the Kelowna Remembrance Day service by anti-vaxxers. Are they really saying that their objection to wearing a mask in public and being asked to be vaccinated against COVID equates to our veterans sacrificing their lives and health to protect our society and freedoms? We have the freedoms and rights that we enjoy today because so many veterans believed that the good of the rest of society outweighed their own. They
were prepared to put aside their own ambitions and family to ensure that the rest of society would be free. Many died for that belief and many more suffered mental and physical harm. They have the right to expect us to remember their sacrifice without selfish individuals disrespecting them and what they stand for. Rights and freedoms come with responsibilities to the rest of society. Anti-vaxxers have the right to risk their own lives and health by catching
COVID, but not to risk anyone else’s. Being unvaccinated and not wearing a mask when appropriate is proven to cause harm to others in society. It is incumbent on every member of our society to comply with dictates guided by proven science that say that, for the good of society as a whole, we all need to be vaccinated against COVID and wear masks when appropriate. To do otherwise is highly disrespectful of the sacrifices made by our veterans. Graham Smith, Peachland
Consequences of clear cutting our first line of defence I have to ask B.C.’s Premier and all MLAs why we continue to clear cut our proven first line of defense against mudslides, floods and climate change? Will the already subsidized forestry industry pitch in for the collateral damages? Will the rock bottom stumpage we receive from clear cut salvage logging our crown forests pay for externalities? All highways to Vancouver are closed. Coquihalla, and Fraser Canyon due to slides. Agassiz Highway 7 has two slides with cars trapped between the slides. The Hope Princeton highway now has a slide and a river across the road near the Hope slide and there is a power outage in Hope
to Eastgate in Manning Park. Hwy 1 west of Hope at Popkum and Bridal Falls has slides. Highway to Revelstoke is closed too! Merritt’s entire water system is going down and residents have been told to avoid using water. Many areas of the province are already under evacuation orders and alerts as the saturation and atmospheric river continues. Flooding in Abbotsford is so bad that an emergency centre has been opened for evacuees. The Canada Task Force 1 that is sent to countries to help with earthquakes and such is being sent to the Agassiz slide to help.
You know it’s bad when they get sent in. Peachland endured two massive slides near clear cut logging blocks in 2017 (and many minor ones in 2018); one was substantial enough to prompt the mayor call a state of emergency. Yet we continue to clear cut and deforest at an alarming rate all our native, built in, free, proven, successful front-line methods of flood and mudslide controls, our forests. We have the science linking forest cover loss to increased hydrological events for some time now. Maybe time to be more precautionary - climate change is here. Taryn Skalbania, Peachland

FOR SENIORS How to make a bucket list a reality The idiom “kick the bucket” is a euphemism for passing away that does not paint such a rosy picture if you consider its origins. However, the phrase “bucket list,” though undeniably related to “kick the bucket,” definitely sheds a brighter light on the topic of mortality. A bucket list is a plan for living life to its fullest and prioritizing opportunities to engage in all sorts of activities. A bucket list can be made at any point in life and is not exclusive to individuals facing their own mortality. Here are some tips for putting bucket list plans into action. • Stop and think about what you really want to experience in your lifetime. Leave factors like money or proximity out of it. No ideas are off-limits. This is your opportunity to brainstorm, and nothing is too crazy or silly. • Write the bucket list in a comfortable or inspiring place, which may help ideas flow more freely. The place might be a cozy nook at a bookstore or a quiet spot on the beach. • Choose things that are meaningful to you as well
Arbor Funeral Chapels & Crematorium
as ideas that are frivolous and fun. Make your list a mix of each, and don’t take yourself too seriously. • Divide the bucket list by time. Are there items you can check off in a particular season, such as skiing the Alps? If your bucket list involves moving to a bustling city, determine if you’d like to do that after your children have reached adulthood or if you want to expose them to city life as youngsters. Categorizing the list by periods of your life can make it easier to prioritize certain activities over others. • Determine if each bucket list activity will be a solitary or joint pursuit. Various activities are more enjoyable when shared with others, but some you might be more inclined to do alone. • Set aside a budget for funding bucket list activities. Bucket lists may include some costly activities, so start saving now so money does not stand in your way. Open a savings account specifically for funding bucket list excursions and set up automatic deposits. Bucket lists can encourage people to live life to the fullest and it’s never too early to get started on a list of your own.
