Accessible plaza fundraising efforts suspended JOANNE LAYH Efforts to raise funds for the Peachland Historic School accessible plaza project have been put on hold, the Peachland Historic School Accessible Plaza Society (PHSAPS) announced on Monday. In a press release issued earlier this week, PHSAPS said it is sad to announce that it is suspending its efforts to raise funds for completion of its accessibility project at the Peachland Historic School. Last year PHSAPS formed with the goal of modifying the front of the historic schoolhouse with the addition of an accessibility ramp and a plaza. The society developed preliminary designs for the project and had received the support of Peachland council.

RENDERING PEACHLAND HISTORIC ACCESSIBLE PLAZA SOCIETY

The original estimate for the cost to complete the project was around $350,000. ”The decision to halt efforts to complete the project was very difficult,” society president Ted Cave told the View. “Due to design changes and escalating construction costs the anticipated cost to

complete is approximately double the original estimate of $350,000. Looking optimistically at grant outcomes we would still need more than half the total budget, and be in a position to finish the project in 2022.” Last fall the society had applied unsuccessfully for

Memories that last a lifetime, no wrapping required

a $560,000 Community Economic Recovery Infrastructure Program grant that had unanimous support from Peachland council. The project had received donations from Hainle Winery and the Peachland Fall Fair, and the society held several fundraising events, including the peach ribbon fundraiser and a canna lily flower sale, but it seems without grant funding, local fundraising efforts won’t be enough. While the society will not

be dissolved and still may restart its efforts to complete the project at a later date, they’ve conceded that continued pursuit of the project is unrealistic at this time due to rising construction costs and diminishing grant opportunities. “This was not a decision we wanted to take, but we have to deal with reality,” said Cave. ”Project costs have ballooned and grant sources have shrunk. We will review our closure decision at the end of 2022, and

decide at that time on a future course of action.” Deborah Livingstone, a PHSAPS director and president of the Peachland Community Arts Council also lamented the project’s inability to progress to completion. “As a partner in this project, the arts council will continue to hold dear the prospect of making the historic school a vibrant, fully accessible, community hub, enhanced by the addition of outdoor programming space. We are sad that this goal has to be postponed and hope that in a post-pandemic era, construction costs will revert to a more normal level.” Grants and donations received will either be retained by the society for future project use, or, in the case of contributions conditional on project completion, returned to the provider, the release states, adding that no funds will be disposed of for purposes other than those for which they were intended.

Arrest puts end to Okanagan armed robbery spree DON URQUHART A month-long armed robbery spree that hit businesses throughout the Okanagan Valley from Osoyoos to Vernon has finally come to an end with the arrest on 18 Nov. of Shawn Lamouroux, a 37-year-old Vernon resident. Lamouroux was caught on camera at almost every business he held up, and although masked, the images in some cases provided clear images of portions of his face and head. The robberies were committed between Oct. 18 and Nov. 14, 2021 and in each case involved threatening employees that he had a firearm and demanded money. In most of the cases he then fled on foot with cash and store merchandise. The RCMP said Prolific Offender Management teams from both Penticton and Vernon, along

Fall Fair Section Head was an inspiration Peachland has recently lost one of their wonderful residents. Elizabeth Varjassy was very involved in the community, volunteering in many different ways. She was the Section Head in the Handicrafts section of the Peachland Fall Fair. She was a very passionate volunteer and put her all into everything she did. Elizabeth was a very sweet and witty gal who always had a smile and a kind word to say. Our committee was better for having her as a member and she will be greatly missed as a volunteer, and as a friend. Elizabeth inspired me and, I’m sure many others in

Peachland to just get out and help where needed in the community. Despite her ongoing health issues, she was always available to get down to business and lend a hand. I am thankful to have had this beautiful human in my life for the past four years and I’m sure she touched many other people with whom she worked and befriended. As a legacy to Elizabeth, I encourage you to get out and volunteer and leave your own legacy in the beautiful town of Peachland. Tami Theriault President, Peachland Fall Fair

Mayor’s letter to the editor in response to Eric Hall’s letter Dear Editor, It is always disappointing when someone makes a grand, erroneous and ill-informed comments. (Letter to the editor; Eric Hall; Dec. 3, 2021: “Who should be responsible to provide seniors housing?) Words matter. We do have the freedom of expression, but to even suggest that anyone has told, or even indicated to the service clubs that we don’t value them is ridiculous. Not only did that not happen, but in the attempt to stir up trouble, as has been Mr. Hall’s M.O. for many years. I’d like to specifically address two issues. The first one being the location of the affordable seniors housing buildings, and the second one regarding finding new homes for the wellness centre, community policing, food bank, and Lions, who currently reside on the land that

has been slated for the second seniors building. Mr. Hall has told me in the past, including face-toface, that he doesn’t believe that the seniors deserve to be downtown on this property. It’s too valuable for them (although not millions, plural, as he suggested.) Let us not forget that it is our seniors who built this country over the last several decades, who fought wars, built bridges, roads, infrastructure, and homes, raised families, grew our crops, volunteer in our communities, and so much more. They are also the ones who have gone on to be our parents and grandparents. We are not going to segregate these valuable (and many in-need) seniors up in the hills, especially when mobility is already a challenge for many. We need to take the responsibility of care for our seniors Continued on Page 10

ADOPT ME

Name: Giggsy ID: 538890

Continued from Page 4 as they age, and being in the downtown area close to businesses, recreation, and services can help prevent isolation and the inability to access these locations. We did not “give up” this land for seniors housing. Seniors Housing is the reason the land was acquired many years ago. Another inaccuracy is that anyone has taken direction from Mayor and Council. We only just received the report at our last council meeting and have scheduled a special in-camera meeting for Dec. 14 to discuss the matter. In-camera (for now) as we will be discussing some confidential BC Housing information, as well.

Other misinformation by Mr. Hall is that B.C. Housing will operate the facility. That has never been the case. The Peachland Seniors Support Society (PSSS), of which I’ve been proud to be a director, myself, for the last eight years, has an excellent property/building manager who will continue to manage the first and second building. Keith Fielding, president of the PSSS and a member of a subcommittee, along with Grant Topham and Eldon Kerbes, has been working diligently with the Peachland Wellness Centre (PWC) on finding accommodation for them in the new Seniors Affordable Housing building. Keith has a special

place in his heart for the wellness centre. He and late wife Olive worked for many years with the organization, and Olive played a huge role in getting the PWC up and running. So to even suggest that he, or any others, don’t care about what happens to this and the other community groups, societies, and service clubs, is not only insulting, but is completely misinformed, inflammatory rhetoric on Mr. Hall’s part. The district is also working on finding accommodations for the other groups, just as they did with the first building when it became time to begin the build. These organizations have known that the district land they

are on was slated to be part of the affordable seniors housing. And it is not lost on myself, and all of council and district staff, just how important a role they play in our community. It is because we treasure them and all the good work they do for our community that we are working diligently on finding accommodations for each and every one. It is expected to still be a year or more before shovels are in the ground. Other comments to address: Peachland already has land for the new fire hall that will allow them a much quicker exit in the event of an emergency. This seniors housing land would be greatly underutilized for just district offices, when it can help house 200 to 300 seniors. The PSSS cannot refuse to review all applications, whether they are a Peachland resident or not, as that is considered discrimination. The PSSS does, however, have a “need” scoring system, that includes whether or not they are a present or former Peachland resident. The Province will not pay for “everything”, no matter how much you demand it. They need to see that the district has a stake in the project to demonstrate their commitment to the build. It’s sad when the only way you can voice your opinion is to spout misinformation, and put down the good work and well intentions of others. There are always going to be people who want to find the negative in everything, and I’m sure there will be more letters to come from Mr. Hall, as this has always been his M.O. (And not surprisingly, and historically, it always revs up in an election year, as he prepares to attempt a run again.) I expect a swift rebuttal from him. Everyone has the right to free speech, but all the erroneous, defamatory comments do is hurt a host of people who are doing a great job, most of whom are volunteers. Respectfully yours, Mayor Cindy Fortin

ing, does not decide on the selection of residents, and does not have any say in day to day operations of the facility: it is the Peachland Seniors Support Society that manages the building, selects the residents and has financial responsibility for its effective management; and • Applications for an apartment in the Phase 1 building were never lagging and outstripped supply from the start. That remains the case today as evidenced by a waiting list of more than 100 applicants, comprised largely of Peachland residents, former Peachland residents, and those with strong family connections to Peachland. The Peachland Seniors Support Society is proud of its efforts to deliver a second phase of seniors housing for Peachland (we hope within the next two years) and will be issuing information bulletins from time to time to provide accurate information about project progress. Given the many inaccuracies in the letter from Mr. Hall published in the View last week, the Peachland Seniors Support Society would like readers to know that: • Successive councils, including the one on which Mr. Hall served as a councillor, have consistently determined that the provision of affordable seniors housing is a high priority for our community and have understood that the donation of land and waiver of fees to make that happen is an essential funding requirement; • The suggestion that tenants of the district owned properties on 5th Street will be callously abandoned when demolition occurs, is absurd. The society and the district have both been actively engaged identifying alternative locations for displaced tenants. In the society’s case this has involved extensive consultations with the Peachland Wellness Centre regarding our mutual interest in exploring how they might occupy space in the Phase 2 building. Relocation discussions remain active and ongoing; • Contrary to Mr. Hall’s assertions, BC Housing does not operate the build-
