Last week Peachland Rotary Club president Steve Gardner (centre) presented a cheque for $5,000 to the Peachland Hub Society, an early seed donation to the hub start-up funding campaign. Shown from left to right are Peachland Community Connects chair Shelley Sweeney, Peachland Wellness Centre president Kym Martin, Peachland Food Bank’s Judy Bedford, Peachland and District Retirement Society president Gwen Bodnaryk and Peachland Community Connects representative Rick Ingram.

Only two days after being given the go ahead by Peachland council to proceed with their ambitious project to renovate and expand the 50 Plus Activity Centre, the Peachland Hub Society received its first major donation from the Peachland Rotary Club. Last Thursday morning the rotary club donated $5,000 toward the cause. “We are really excited about the project, we’re happy to support it. We’re looking forward to having this new hub in service and in place to serve the people of Peachland,” Peachland Rotary Club president Steve Gardner told the View. “The hub is going to be a great asset for Peachland, not only for the district itself, but for the residents. It’s multi-generational, so it’s going to be something that is going to serve all of Peachland, not just a particular age group,” said spokesperson for the hub, Peachland Community Connects chair Shelley Sweeney. “We’re really looking forward to having

this coming up. We really need your support. Peachlanders, get out, support us, contact us. We’re more than happy to talk to you about it.” Sweeney says the society will begin rolling out a multi-faceted, multi-year fundraising initiative early next month. This will include raffles and donation appeals seeking support ranging from $250 (for their Buy-a-Brick Bronze Level) to $350,000 (for naming rights on the building). Currently society members are in the middle of a start-up funding campaign that aims to raise $120,000 to support immediate work needed to submit a grant application. “This is a critical step, and we are still needing to talk with more local individuals and companies in a position to make $5,000 - $10,000 charitable donations,” said Peachland Community Connects representative Rick Ingram. Anyone interested in helping with the start-up funding campaign is invited to reach out to info@ peachlandhub.ca.

Succession driven realignment within IHA is coming, councillor contends JOANNE LAYH A special council meeting to discuss the Heritage Park splash pad washrooms, called by Councillors Terry Condon and Patrick Van Minsel, failed to reverse a

council decision made on Apr. 19 to keep the washrooms so the splash pad can open soon. The washrooms, which cost approximately $100,000, were delivered to Heritage Park last Sep-

tember to fulfill an Interior Health requirement for the adjacent splash pad. Then, during budget deliberations in March, Peachland council were presented with an additional $40,000 capital expenditure

request for a set of stairs leading into the washrooms, which raised some concerns at the council table around the escalating cost of the project as well as the lack of accessibility for wheelchair users and the size and loca-

tion of the washrooms. Stairs were suggested because a ramp option would cost even more, according to staff. District staff promised to revisit Interior Health to see if the requirement for the washrooms could be reversed, but they returned to council on Apr. 19 to say that unfortunately, IHA’s decision stands and if changes were made at this stage it would result in a further delay in opening the splash pad. A suggestion that they install port-a-potties instead received a “hard no” from Interior Health, accord-

ing to operations director Shawn Grundy’s report delivered at Monday’s special meeting. Coun. Condon called the special meeting to say this to his council colleagues: “I learned a little more about IHA, their decision-making process and how others are dealing with some of the red tape and the demands that they feel are being unreasonably imposed by IHA,” said Condon. “My source must remain confidential, but it is from a source that we would all recognize. I can Continued on Page 3

assure you it is reliable.” Condon went on to say he learned that rather than move forward with their projects burdened with what they see as unreasonable and excessively expensive IHA requirements, other jurisdictions have chosen to put a short term hold on implementation, pending what he was told is “an expected succession driven realignment within IHA, which is expected to result in a significantly more cooperative approach and return to reasonableness and common sense.” The View reached out to Interior Health about Condon’s remarks and received this in response: “BC Guidelines for Pool Design provide guidance for various aspects of pool and pool enclosure design, including washrooms. Environmental public health considers safety and sanitation of pools in deciding to issue a construction permit. Concerns were raised

with the safety of children crossing the street from the spray pad to access the washrooms. Appropriate washrooms are also important to support good personal hygiene which helps maintain a sanitary pool environment. We continue discussions with Peachland to find an appropriate solution for these washrooms.” The information brought forward by Condon failed to convince his colleagues to reverse their decision about opening the washrooms. “I can’t put much weight in an anonymous source that will not be named for some rumour that may or may not occur for some policy changes that may or may not be implemented,” said Coun. Mike Kent. “I’m not totally in favour of selling the washroom. I believe that it could easily be repurposed within the district and provide very good value.” “I too would not feel comfortable going on hear-

say from an unidentified individual saying this is going to happen,” said Fortin. “I feel this is going to cost us a lot more if we wait then if we just put on some stairs or a ramp . . . I just feel for the safety’s sake of young children playing in that area, that it would be much better for them to have a washroom right there that they can use, and after all, it’s all about safety.” Coun. Pete Coolio said he doesn’t like anonymous sources, uncertain procedures and protocols changing. “It’s like hitching your wagon to a horse that isn’t quite there yet,” said Coolio. “I’m more interested in investigating why we’re in this situation to begin with, why we have these terrible bathrooms in a place we don’t want them.”

CAO Joe Creron said there are two projects for which they’ve already decided to do a post-mortem audit, this project and the museum renovation. At the last regular council meeting Councillors Condon, Van Minsel and Fielding voted to delay a decision about how to proceed with the splash pad washrooms, in hope that a better solution could be found. They were outvoted by Mayor Cindy Fortin and Councillors Pam Cunningham, Mike Kent and Pete Coolio, who favoured opening the splash pad and washrooms as soon as possible and dealing with the washroom issue at a later date. At the special meeting held on Monday, Condon asked council to rescind

their decision to move forward with the washroom project, put the washroom up for sale in unused condition, and wait out the upcoming IHA changes. Once again, Councillors

Condon, Van Minsel and Fielding were outvoted by Mayor Fortin and Councillors Cunningham, Coolio and Kent, so for the time being the washroom structure stays.

Peachland Hub Society needs local supporters to step forward Lots of people are asking what the Hub is all about. Ever since the plans for a second tower of the seniors’ complex was confirmed, the Peachland Wellness Centre, the Peachland Food Bank, Peachland Community Policing and the Peachland Lions all knew that they would eventually have to find new homes when their current ones would be demolished. The Peachland Hub is the name for the planned new building to be made by renovating and expanding the existing 50+ Activity Centre on Beach Ave. The Hub, and the smaller Annex between the Hub and the highway, will be a permanent home for many of Peachland’s amazing community service non-profits and will be an attractive addition to Peachland’s picturesque Beach Ave. As things move from concepts to design, we’ll be holding open houses and will be at places like World of Wheels and the farmers’ market for people to learn more. No question though - this is a huge project for Peachland. And there is an enormous task of fundraising ahead for the groups as all of the funding will come from grants, donations and fundraising activities (raffles and so

on) applied for and run by the groups. The main multi-faceted, multi-year fundraising campaign will get going in earnest next month. This will be how most people will be able to support the Hub, and we look forward to making this a fun and engaging process. But right now the groups are working very hard to raise enough money through the start-up funding effort to hire our architect and get the project to a point where we can apply for large federal grants (targeting this for over 50 per cent of the project costs). This means finding about 24 people/couples/businesses who can donate $5,000 each to get us to be able to start grant preparation work - and to be ready for a grant application this summer we need to start this work right away. While a few early supporters have come forward, and we are in discussions with quite a few more, we’re going to need to find several more if we’re going to make this first goal in the next couple of weeks. So, if you can, Help Us Build. Rick Ingram Vice Chair, Peachland Hub Society Vice President, Peachland Wellness Centre

OPINION

Splash pad delay not a tragedy I would hardly call not opening the splash park by May a tragedy. Tragedy would be not fixing the problem while you can. My conversation with the engineer at Interior Health who dealt with it was frustrating to say the least; he couldn’t remember much and was going through his notes while talking to me. All he knew was that there had to be a washroom available before there could be a splash pad. I agree with Councillor Fielding – it needs to be reviewed and the shipping container sent down to 13th. Maggie Brooks, Peachland

Senior wants more information Dear editor I read with interest the article on the Peachland Hub Society’s plans for the 50 Plus Activity Centre. In the list of key considerations, there was no mention for which the building was originally built - seniors. Most communities in B.C., large and small, feature some sort of senior centre, recognizing the contribution seniors have made to their community. Peachland has a large population of seniors, many of whom use the present facility to keep healthy and happy. The article also mentioned fund raising through grants and public support. There is only so much a community our size can support. What about the ramp project on the Historic School? During the construction of the Hub, it was suggested existing activities would be housed in various facilities some of which are not “senior friendly”. I am happy the Peachland Wellness Centre, the Food Bank, and Community Police will be housed in the new Hub, but I hope the seniors will still feel they belong to what used to be their building. The 50 Plus Activity Centre will be discussing the Hub proposal at the pot luck, Friday, April 29. Perhaps some of these questions will be addressed. Phyllis Papineau, Peachland

Break in at chamber building JOANNE LAYH The TNI Chamber 2.0 building was broken into sometime last Thursday night or early Friday morning. This writer arrived to work Friday morning to find the door frame of the Peachland View office damaged and the door left open. Other than damage to another interior door frame and a filing cabinet drawer left open, nothing else was disturbed and no items were stolen. Two other offices in the same building, Brenda Renewables and Coldwell Banker, were also broken into and both offices showed signs of being searched. “Without knowing for sure, one of the two doors at the front or the back was pulled open or pried open with a bar,” said RCMP Cst. Tyler Jackson. “Once they gained access to the inner central area some of the interior doors were kicked and pried open.” Cst. Jackson said the RCMP had not received any other calls in Peachland Friday morning.

FOR SENIORS Qualities to look for in a post-retirement job The notion of relaxing on a beach all day in one’s golden years is still a retirement dream for millions of adults across the globe. But many individuals also harbour a desire to keep working after retiring. Whether it’s a volunteering gig or a part-time job retirees are looking for, certain qualities can make an opportunity uniquely suited to a post-retirement job. • Flexibility: Retirees may be looking to contribute to their communities or simply earn a little spending money, but they will likely still want the freedom to travel or spend time with their families whenever they choose. So flexibility is something to look for in a post-retirement job. This is what makes consultant work so attractive to retirees. In-person hours may not be required of consultants, who can then offer their input while visiting their grandchildren or travelling the world. • Socialization: Though the ability to work from home can make it easier for retirees to earn some extra money, some seniors aren’t concerned about their

finances but want to work so they can get out of the house. In that case, look for a job that offers the opportunity to socialize and meet new people. Socializing as an older adult is a great way to fend off loneliness. In addition, one study published in 2007 in the journal of the American Public Health Association found that social support networks have a positive effect on cognition among older adults. So a post-retirement job that enables retirees to socialize could delay or reduce the severity of age-related cognitive decline. • Engagement: A job seniors find engaging also is more likely to provide the types of benefits seniors are looking for in post-retirement work. For example, researchers at Boston College’s Sloan Center on Aging and Work found that seniors who find a job or volunteering opportunity truly engaging are more likely to benefit psychologically from those experiences than those whose post-retirement work is not engaging. If seniors find themselves simply going through the moSPRING INTO RETIREMENT LIVING

tions with their post-retirement work, they can look for opportunities that they can be more enthusiastic about. • Pressure-free: Regardless of what retirees did for a living prior to calling it a career, chances are they dealt with work-related stress. In fact, the American Stress Institute reports that 83 per cent of workers in the United States suffer from work-related stress, while Statistics Canada reports that 62 per cent of Canadian workers say work is their main source of stress. After a lifetime of confronting work-related stress, individuals who want to work in retirement should look for pressure-free opportunities. This is an important quality, as the ASI indicates that stress has been linked to increased rates of heart attack, hypertension and other disorders. The right post-retirement job may differ from what individuals looked for during their careers. Various qualities can combine to make for a post-retirement gig that benefits seniors in myriad ways.
