Coun. Patrick Van Minsel announces he’s running for mayor JOANNE LAYH On Tuesday morning Coun. Patrick Van Minsel publicly announced he will be running for mayor in the upcoming municipal election. The announcement took place downtown in front of the Rotary clock in front of a couple dozen supporters. Van Minsel was elected to Peachland council in 2018 for a term that is coming to an end this fall. The one-term councillor is probably best known in Peachland for his role in supporting local business, having served as general manager of the Peachland Chamber of Commerce since 2014. His personal business background includes owning and operating a wine tour company, fitness and wellness club chain, and financial consulting business, among other ventures. He is also a founding member several local

non-profit organizations, the Bat Education and Ecological Protection Society (B.E.E.P.S), Peachland Recovery Taskforce, and the Okanagan Folk School Society. “Over the past four years of service as a municipal councillor, I have demonstrated my commitment to the community and have gained the experience necessary to run for mayor,” said Van Minsel. “These years have also convinced me of the need for consensus minded leadership. As a community we face challenges in governance. I have been fortunate to have received feedback and concerns from Peachland residents. Many of them have highlighted their desire for a professional, team orientated approach with increased transparency and opportunity for community input.” Van Minsel said issues that have been brought to his

attention include taxation, housing, infrastructure, the protection of our watershed, fiscal responsibility, and the transparent stewardship of taxpayers’ money.

He went on to say that Peachland’s future ability to provide services cannot rely entirely on revenue from property tax or parcel tax. “Building strong relationships with both provincial and federal government

agencies will grant us access to necessary funding to take care of our infrastructure needs like sewers, roads, sidewalks, and parks. I stand here today finding consensus, building partnerships, and delivering cost effec-

tive solutions – that’s what I promise to you,” he said. “Having been a member of multiple diverse boards and committees, I have demonstrated an ability to work with all Peachlanders to improve our community.” All local governments in B.C. will have a general election on Oct. 15. Currently, no other members of Peachland council or the community at large have publicly announced their intentions for the upcoming election. The last general election took place on Oct. 20, 2018, when there was a tie vote for mayor between Cindy Fortin and Harry Gough with 804 votes each. The result was decided by pulling a name from the box. At that time Van Minsel was elected to council with the highest vote of 1,094, followed by Pete Coolio with 1,073, Terry Condon with 1,029, Pam Cunningham with 1,022, Keith Fielding with 998 and Mike Kent with 996.

Body recovered from the lake JOANNE LAYH After an extensive three-day search by the West Kelowna RCMP and the RCMP Underwater Recovery Team, the body of the Calgary man reported missing over a week ago has been recovered. On June 18 at approximately 3:45 p.m., West Kelowna RCMP responded to a call for a 34-year-old Calgary man, Oluwaseun Samson Adedeji, who had failed to resurface after jumping into Okanagan Lake from a boat. The incident occurred near Squally Point, south of Rattlesnake Island. The West Kelowna RCMP boat team, along with teams from Central Okanagan Search and Rescue (COSAR) and Peachland Fire and Rescue responded quickly to the call, said Kelowna Regional Detachment Sergeant Kevin Duggan. Adedeji and five friends were vacationing from Calgary. Adedeji’s body was located in 64 meters of water approximately one-half kilometre from where he went missing. Sonar and ROV were used in the recovery. ‘This was a tragic and sad event to start our summer season here in the sunny Okanagan,” said Kelowna media relations officer Cst Mike Della-Paolera. “Our condolences to the man’s family and friends during this time.”

Into handicrafts?

Are you a creative person who loves to do handicrafts? Did you know that you can enter your creations into the Peachland Fall Fair handicraft section? The Peachland Fall Fair is running September 10 and 11 this year. The theme is “A New Beginning”. In handicrafts there are numerous categories to pick from including animals, woodworking, painting, and scrapbooking. These are just a sample of some of the different ideas. New categories include paverpol and heirloom handicrafts. Since our last fair, I am sure many of you have been busy trying all sorts of new things, hopefully not just baking and gardening. It has been the perfect time to try out new handicrafts or pull out old ones that you haven’t done for a while. Think about entering your work in this year’s fair. Prizes will be awarded. The judges will be looking for neatness, quality and care in the finishing, so make sure to cut your threads, trim seams, trim wires and tidy up. Put on your thinking caps and see what you can come up with. The complete list is available in the booklet or visit peachlandfallfair.ca. Get started on your handicrafts or check out the full list of sections if a handicraft isn’t your thing. Erin Galley

Two dead in ostensible murder-suicide JOANNE LAYH A man and woman were found dead inside of a home on Garraway Pl Monday evening, following an ostensible murder-suicide. On Monday, June 27, at approximately 4:30 p.m., the Kelowna RCMP received a complaint stating that a woman had received a call from her friend saying that a homicide had taken place and they were considering self-harm. RCMP did not indicate if the friend was a man or

a woman. Officers determined that the complaint was related to a property in Peachland and soon dozens of police and other emergency response vehicles were seen heading up Princeton Ave to Garraway Pl, while a plane circled overhead. Police attended the residence and set up a containment perimeter. Multiple attempts to reach those inside were reportedly unsuccessful, states a release issued by BC RCMP Communication Services

Approval for Todd’s RV development JOANNE LAYH Porchlight Developments’ proposal to build six six-storey buildings and four luxury beachside bungalows at 3946, 3966 and 3976 Beach Ave, the site of Todd’s RV, received the final go ahead from Peachland council at their June 14 regular meeting. The proposal has the six-storey stepped-floor buildings set back closer to the highway with four bungalows placed closer to Beach Ave. “We have taken care to place the taller buildings nearest the highway to the north and adjacent the existing buffer strip and existing resort to the west, and place single family and a large landscape buffer adjacent the single-family homes to the east,” states the website for the development. To facilitate the upgrade of the campground to a 46-unit tourist/residential project, the developer proposed an application to rezone the site to CD11 Todd’s Resort Comprehensive Development Zone from C6 Campground and R1 Single Detached Residential. The OCP and zoning amendment bylaws to allow this have now received adoption by Peachland council. The new CD11 Todd’s Resort zone allows for tourist accommodation and vacation resort residential accommodations. Back in January the de-

veloper conducted a public information meeting that drew a mix of praise and concerns from residents. In response to concerns expressed about height, a subsequent visual impact analysis conducted by the developer indicated there would be negligible visual impact, Peachland council were told in March, when they unanimously gave first and second readings to the bylaws. At the public hearing held last month only a handful of Peachland residents came forward to have their say, including a couple of Lakeshore Gardens residents who were not necessarily opposed to the project, but expressed concerns about noise, parking, security and potential conflict between guests and residents. The project received third reading from council on May 24 and on May 31 Ministry of Transportation and infrastructure granted their approval, which was a requirement due to the property’s proximity to Hwy 97. “We’ve had many opportunities to sell and the developers that we have finally hooked up with look like they’re going to do a bang up job and we’re very happy with them,” said property owner Graham Todd at last month’s public hearing. The Todd family will continue operating their business on the site for the current season.

Director Dawn Roberts. At approximately 6:20 p.m., the RCMP Southeast District Emergency Response Team entered the home and located an individual dead with what appeared to be self-inflict-

ed wounds with a weapon nearby. A second individual was also located deceased in the home. It is believed that the two people were known to each other and that there is no further ongoing threat to

the public, said Roberts. RCMP Southeast District Major Crime Unit has now assumed the investigation into the original complaint and will work with the BC Coroner’s Service to identify the deceased individuals

and the exact cause of death. The Independent Investigations Office of BC is now investigating the incident to determine whether police actions contributed to the deaths.

BC Premier John Horgan announces resignation MARIUS AUER British Columbia’s Premier and leader of the BC New Democratic Party (BC NDP), John Horgan, has announced he will not seek re-election, and will resign his post after an upcoming party leadership election to decide his successor. Becoming Premier in a deal with the BC Green Party after Christy Clark’s BC Liberal minority government lost confidence of the BC Legislature in July of 2017 following a provincial election, Horgan went on to win a landslide victory in the 2020 provincial election. His New Democrats captured 57 of 87 seats at the BC Legislature in Victoria. Despite this, Horgan had his second bout with cancer last year, and says his energy is flagging. “I am proud to say I’m cancer free. While I have a lot of energy, I must acknowledge this may not be the case two years from now. Therefore, I have decided not to run again in the next

Premier John Horgan.

election,” said Horgan. Horgan serves as the Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) for the coastal riding of Langford-Juan de Fuca, a role

he says he looks forward to continuing and focusing on for the rest of his term. After much consultation with both members of his family and his cabinet, as well reflecting

on his personal health problems, Horgan said he reached the decision to make way for new leadership during a stressful and uncertain time. “As we reach the mid-

point of our second term, it is clear the tasks ahead of us are enormous and will require a leader focused on the next two years and beyond. A second bout with

cancer and dozens of radiation treatments has led me to take stock.” Horgan will stay on in his full capacity as Premier until a BC NDP leadership race has selected a new leader, likely in the fall. He said he is focused on tackling urgent issues such as the increased cost of living and stresses on primary care in BC. Horgan thanks the people of BC for offering their best wishes, and the healthcare workers who aided him in his journey. “I will stay on as Premier until my successor is chosen. I will continue to do my level best to make politics work for people. This includes pushing the federal government to fund their fair share of health-care costs so we can make our public healthcare system work better for everyone,” added Horgan. No one has officially declared their intention to run for the position Horgan is leaving vacant, although the date and parameters for a BC NDP leadership election have not yet been set.
