Peachland resident Nick Walsh has an nounced he’ll be running for council in the upcoming municipal election. Walsh retired to Peachland in 2015. Prior to that he was employed in various roles by the Justice Institute of BC. Walsh told the View he believes local development should be supported by a visible number of Peachland citizens, to the point where you can say, ‘Peachland pretty much wants this’. If elected to council, he hopes to be a voice for the unheard. Walsh says he’s met with two of the three mayoral candidates and has admi ration for both Keith Fielding and Patrick Van“SensibleMinsel. development that’s well re searched and is supported to the best of our abilities by the community. I don’t want to be a councillor with an agenda. I’m not the guy who’s coming in with an agenda to get this done or get that done. I want sensible development, I want sen sible management of our resources, I want sensible management of our fiscal resources, I want staff to be adequately looked after because the staff there, just from my interaction with several of them, they’re excellent people and they need support,” said Walsh. “Is what we’re do ing for the right thing for the right people at the right time and are we listening to people?”Walsh says he will vote in favour of the protective services building in the Nov. 15 referendum and would also like to see the development a soccer field at Turner Park. The nomination filing period began to day; this afternoon the municipality will host an information open house for elec tion candidates from 3 p.m. – 6 p.m. in council chambers; declaration of the can didates will take place on or after Sep 9. Election Day is on Oct. 15.

Since the partnership between the Liberals and NDP was formed back in late March of this year, one of the joint political messages has been “tax theInrich”.terms of policy decisions, this translated into a new federal luxury tax on vehicles and aircraft priced over $100,000 and boats priced over $250,000.Thetax rate is either 10 per cent of the total post-tax purchase price, or 20 per cent of value over a certain threshold, whichever is lesser. For the purpose of this report, we will focus on boats. The justification for this tax, from the Trudeau Liberal government, is anyone who can afford a boat costing $250,000 can afford to pay more in tax. Some readers are probably already wondering why even bother to men tion a tax that only an incredibly small percentage of the population will need to be concerned with. I’m not writing to advocate for po tential new boat owners but rather to explain the policy ramifications in volved with taxation competitiveness.
When the Parliamentary Budget Officer (PBO) looked at the fiscal implications of the luxury tax, he concluded the luxury tax will gen erate government revenues of up to $760Whilemillion.this sounds positive, the downside is that the PBO also calcu lates there will be a sales decline of $2.9Thebillion.PBO estimates that 75 per cent of that loss — or $2.1 billion — will be incurred by the recreational boat industry here in Canada. In other words, this tax creates a loss of revenue. As we heard from representatives of the Canadian marine industry, this tax is expected to create job losses and other economic hardships. As many will know, Campion Ma rine, an iconic made in Kelowna boat manufacturer, recently closed their doors creating the loss of roughly 100 well-paying jobs, as well as the loss of other economic contributions im portant to our regional and national economy.Itmust be acknowledged that there is already a provincial luxury tax in B.C., and an additional federal luxu ry tax will hit B.C. harder than other parts of Canada.
Tolko invested in several new lum ber mills in places like Ackerman, Mississippi as well as Urania, Loui siana and Ruston, Louisiana. This is not a problem that lands solely at the feet of the federal gov ernment. Many provincial government pol icies also contribute to the lack of competitiveness and, in some cases, local government plays a role as well. My question this week: Are you concerned about the growing number of well-paying mill and manufacturing jobs moving from Canada into the United States? I can be reached at Dan.Albas@ parl.gc.ca or call toll free 800 665 8711.
I am not suggesting the luxury tax was the sole reason for the closure of Campion in Kelowna, as most of the boats Campion built would not have been impacted by this luxury tax. However, it does point out a pattern that we as Canadians should take noteGlobalof. Okanagan News has re ported that Campion will be moving production to Texas and Mexico. In Texas, Campion would pay no luxury tax, no carbon taxes, nor would it pay higher payroll taxes on EI and CPP as well as the Provincial Employers Health Tax. In other words, as these new extra costs make Canadian made products and services more expensive -- it makes the cost of doing business out side of Canada more attractive. For example, citizens may remem ber the Bombardier C-Series jet. Despite Canadian taxpayers hav ing invested roughly $1 billion into the development of this commercial jet, it is now built in Alabama and not Canada.Onanother different but local note, Tolko industries has closed local lumber mills in the communities of Kelowna and Merritt.
The provincial and federal luxu ry taxes would be applied to boat purchases -- before GST would be applied.Thatmeans the GST is also ulti mately applicable to the provincial and federal luxury taxes, which cre ates an even higher final sale amount on the boat in question. These added costs create a larg er incentive for buyers wanting to avoid paying these taxes and have the means to go to other jurisdictions where the taxes aren’t an issue.

Vintage and Collectable Motorcycle Show returns on Sunday

“It seems to me people are just desperate to get out again,” said Fuderich. “Vancouver is a hot spot for entrants as well as the Northern Okanagan, places like Salmon Arm. There is a lot of interest. I’m amazed at how many calls I’m getting, but I’m not surprised because there’s a lot of appetite for it.” The organizers are also hoping Sunday’s show will be an opportunity for enthusiasts to meet new people in the community who share a passion for vintage and collectable bikes, but it’s also hoped that interested members of the public will attend and provide a bit of a boost for the downtown area over the long weekend. Collectible event t-shirts will be available at the show on Sunday. Any money that is raised through the event will be donated to the Peachland Arts Council, who are also spon sors of the event.

JOANNE LAYH Hundreds of motorcycle riders and bike en thusiasts are expected to roar into Peachland this Sunday for the second annual Peachland Vintage and Collectable Motorcycle Show. Peachland resident and event organizer Bo ris Fudurich has been collecting and restoring motorcycles for many years; he’s lived in the area since 1977 and observed that there had never been a bike show strictly for vintage and collectable motorcycles so he organized the first show in Peachland in 2019. Unfortunately the event was forced to take a two-year hiatus due to COVID, but Fudurich expects this year will be bigger and better as the valley is home to many motorcycle en thusiasts who spend summertime riding and wintertime restoring and many of them are excited to show off the fruits of their labour after being kept inside for so long. “I’ve had a tremendous amount of calls,” said Fudurich. “Some of our peer group are coming from Vancouver. There was a big motorcycle show in Chilliwack but the fellow sold his dealership and that is now defunct. I think we are the only motorcycle-only show in FudurichB.C.” describes his event as “multi-de nominational” as it will include Japanese, European, British, Taiwanese and even Rus sian motorcycles. There will be at least three heavy duty Russian Ural sidecars in the show, saysThisFudurich.yearthe show has had some help from Johnston Meier Insurance, who are sponsor ing the insurance for the event. An estimated 2,000 people attended the inaugural event, and this year 3,000 - 4,000 attendees are expected.

It is with great sadness that the family of Thomas “Grant” Wilcox announce his passing on July 11, 2022, at the age of 91. He will be missed and lovingly remembered by his wife of 70 years, Josie; children Steven (Doris), John (Sandi), Corinne (Danny), Sandra and Christine; grandchildren Evan (Sarah), Jocelyn (Stu), Brenton (Christine), Theresa, Katie, Emily (Jordan), Nathan (Kashka), Mark (Jessica), Danya (Jarrett); great grandchildren Randy, Jaxon, Logan, Rowan and Zander as well as many nieces and nephews. Grant was predeceased by parents Thomas and Corinne Wilcox and sister Joyce Schultze. Grant was born in Bashaw, Alberta on August 22, 1930. At age 11, the family moved to Montreal where Grant, as an adult, would meet and marry the love of his life, Josie. Grant had a long career with Esco Ltd. in Port Coquitlam BC. Those years were filled with raising the family, gardening and spending free time lake and salmon fishing. Grant and Josie moved to Peachland more than 30 years ago where he enjoyed a relaxed life of retirement - gardening, golfing, reading, and following hockey. In 2019 they moved to Regency Retirement Resort in West Kelowna. A private family service will take place at a later date.

• Take all comers. Individuals over 50 may aspire to meet people in situations similar to their own, but they should still allow anyone interested in their club to join. Adults in the early stages of midlife (i.e., their thirties and forties) are often too busy with their personal and professional lives to make much time for social clubs, so it’s likely that those interested will be 50 or older. But accepting all who are interested can increases the chances of starting a diverse and engaging group.

• Think of a hobby unique to your location. One of the best ways to attract other locals is to find a hobby that ca ters to residents in your area. For example, coastal residents may want to start a local fishing club, while city dwellers may draw more interest starting a club focused on local museums or restaurants.

• Spread the word. Meetup (meetup.com) has been facili tating connections for two decades, making it a great place to start a group for people with shared interests. In addition to utilizing a service like Meetup, founders can spread the word through their social media apps and create fliers to post on public boards at local community centers and libraries.
How to organize a social club
The early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic taught the world many lessons, not the least of which was how easy it can be take socializing for granted. Lockdown was a big part of life during the early days of the pandemic, as people were forced to stay home from work and school and remain largely isolated, even from their own friends and family members.Thesense of isolation that many people developed during those early days of the pandemic likely didn’t come as a surprise to medical researchers, particularly those who have studied the effects of isolation on aging populations. The National Institute on Aging indicates that social iso lation and loneliness are linked to depression as well as a host of other negative health outcomes, including high blood pressure, heart disease, obesity, and cognitive de cline.Social clubs can be a great way for adults over 50 to avoid isolation and loneliness. Such clubs can provide op portunities to connect with individuals who share similar interests, laying the foundation for new friendships that can be hard to develop in midlife. Perhaps the best thing about social clubs is that anyone can start one. These tips can help individuals over 50 start social clubs that appeal to locals who are on the lookout for fun ways to meet new people.
Starting a social club can be a great way for individuals over 50 to meet new people and explore new or existing passions.
• Find a public place to get together. It’s best to avoid hosting club events and meetings at a private residence, in cluding your own. Instead, prior to starting the club, look around for meeting places, which can include local church es, libraries or community centers. Ask about reserving spaces for meetings and look for places that are accessible for all people, including those with mobility issues.
