Firefighters put out the last embers of a destroyed house on Hawkes Street. Joanne Layh The Peachland View A Peachland man lost his home and possessions last Thursday morning when a fire destroyed a house at Highway 97 and Hawkes Street. The structure fire was called in at 7:05 a.m. by someone on travelling along the highway,

Peachland fire chief Grant Topham told The View. At the time the fire broke out, there was just one occupant in the home. “He got out of the house. There were no injuries. He was just barely able to get out. He wanted to get in to get some of his possessions but he wasn’t able to go back in the house because of

the intense smoke and flames,” Topham said. “He just couldn’t get back in.” Topham said it took Peachland Fire and Rescue Service (PFRS) about a half hour to get the fire under control. “The house was a 1960s construction,” Topham said. “A lot of the interior of the house was wood paneling and wood on the ceilings and

on the walls. Once the fire got in the house it spread very, very rapidly because of the fuel from the walls. Typical construction now has mostly drywall on the walls but that had wood on the walls so once it got started it spread very, very quickly and it was very, very hot.” Topham said they were very fortunate to have good hydrants with good

water pressure and volume in that area so they were able to use a lot of water and extinguish the fire quickly. PFRS conducted an investigation with the resident’s insurance company but do not yet have the findings of the investigation. There was no damage to any neighbouring properties.
