It’s going to be a Christmassy weekend KRISTEN FRIESEN EDITOR
From Light Up to cutting down your own Christmas tree, there’s plenty to keep you in the spirit this weekend. It all starts Friday afternoon, with Peachland’s annual Christmas kickoff, culminating in the big reveal of thousands of Christmas lights that will line Beach Ave. for the holiday season. Show up at the Boys and Girls Club from 4:30 to 6 p.m., where you’ll find some pre-party fun. Face painting, sing-alongs, and storytime will give way to a short glow parade to Heritage Park, where the lights will be turned on at 6:15 p.m. Fireworks are planned for 6:30 p.m., and there will be more merriment until 7:30 p.m. Check out the entertainment, play some games, take a picture in the photo booth, and for those who want Santa’s ear, the big guy will be hanging out in the gazebo. Santa plans to stay in Peachland for breakfast the next day — the annual Breakfast with Santa event at the community centre starts at 9 a.m. If you’re going, remember your camera and a non-perishable food bank donation. Later in the day, be sure to catch a bake sale at The Little Schoolhouse, hosted by St. Margaret’s Anglican
Church from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. On Sunday, the Winter family will be opening their beautifully decorated home at 4750 Peachland Place, a tradition for more than ten years now. And for those who are still searching for the perfect Christmas tree, permits are still available up to Dec. 24th, but if you’re hoping to cut from a tree farm, you better act now, says the head of the BC Christmas Tree Council. “It’s been the best year yet for a lot of our members,” says Jolene Palmer, who owns Prairie Valley Christmas Trees in Summerland. “We’re pretty much sold out,” she said, explaining that those who’ve already tagged their tree can come and get it, but you’re out of luck if you’re hoping to come and find one. “The weather has been really nice, and people like to come out here and make memories,” Palmer says. And if you’re going out in the woods, remember to be aware of logging traffic and watch that you’re not on private property. This editor was unsuccessful trying to find out where the good spots are around here — any good forager knows how to keep a good secret, so relying on the magic of the season may yield the perfect yuletide experience.

Wanted: Cold weather and smooth ice KRISTEN FRIESEN EDITOR
There’s a snow-topped mountain in the background, the surfaces are prepped and Peachland’s Fire Brigade started a bit of flooding earlier this week on a pair of brandnew skating surfaces up by the riding club. But before you have visions of hockey games, hot chocolate and skating-related fun, hold up - Mother Nature has an obvious stake in this game, and right now, she’s not playing. “We need it to be a little colder during the day so we can go hard at it with the flooding,” says Peachland Fire Chief Dennis Craig. Volunteer firefighters plan to flood the rink every night the temps dip below zero and it’s not snowing. The goal is to have
the rink open by Christmas, but of course that depends on the weather. The mercury is expected to hover around the zero degree mark the next few days. For now, a gate is around both rinks and a sign says to stay away. It’s really important people listen to that, says Director of Community Services Cheryl Wiebe. “If anyone tries to skate before the rinks are ready, they risk damaging it, which will impact our ability to offer this facility.” To prepare the new rinks, district staff were busy the last few weeks levelling the site, installing lighting, painting and putting up the boards, and placing a liner for the surfaces. The district renewed a fiveyear lease with the riding club back in February, allowing the rink to operate at this new location, as the Turner location is
now privately owned and no longer operating as a community park. Once the new rink is up and running, Peachlanders are asked to do their part to make it fun for everyone. Craig says keeping the rink clear of snow is a huge help. “This rink is 100% maintained by volunteers,” he says, adding that despite spending a couple of hours every night flooding the rinks when the weather is right, many Brigade volunteers don’t get to enjoy the rink themselves. “A lot of the members who volunteer their time don’t even own skates,” he said. And for those who do, it looks like patience will be the name of the game for now.

WHAT A DIFFERENCE a week makes! On Nov. 19, (above) district staff were finishing up the boards, and just a few days later, colder temps made it possible for volunteer firefighters to flood a thin layer for ice (below). You have to hold off, though — skating won’t be possilble for some time.

Unofficially, it was one of the worst assignments you could get at the Calgary Sun and it was reserved especially for rookies. It was a story without a byline, it did not involve any interviews, and day after day, the message was the same. It’s going to make me sound kind of bad when I say what this assignment was, and I have to say my attitude towards it had a lot to do with being 24 years old and (wrongly) believing that being a good reporter meant relaying all the bad stuff — the crime, the crashes and other catastrophes that are the meat and potatoes of a major daily newspaper. This was a Christmas assignment. Now in its 36th year, the Sun’s Adopt a Family program with the Salvation Army unites families in need with donors who are able to provide said family a complete Christmas — from food, to gifts and clothing for every member of the family. The rookie’s job was to drum up support by profiling a different anonymous family every day in the paper, in hopes they would be matched with a donor. I’m ashamed to say, but I did not invest much in writing this — it was something to get out of the way so I could get my hands on the meatier stories of the day. But fifteen years, two kids and a move to BC later, I’m sitting in our cozy View office/house more than happy to write about how we can help our fellow Peachlanders. As we all know, not everyone can enjoy the spoils of the season, whether due to financial circumstance, loneliness, tragedy or other obstacles. We have seniors who are lonely, parents who are wondering how they’re going to reconcile their kids’ wants with their financial reality, and others, who simply because of bad luck, bad health, a lost job, or personal tragedy, have found themselves in a situation nobody would want. Many are living paycheque to paycheque and Christmas is, simply put, very stressful. Judy Bedford works at the local food bank and agrees life can turn on a dime. And because it’s easier to give than to receive, she’s encouraging us to think of our neighbours. “It’s hard to find affordable rentals in Peachland, we have seniors, people on disability, and families — things happen and it does take its toll, especially this time of year.” The food bank accepts everything you’d want and need at Christmas — unwrapped toys, toiletries, socks, gift cards, and of course food. Canned vegetables and spaghetti sauce are good staples, says Bedford, who would love to see some upgraded items on the shelves — Christmas is a special occasion after all, and everyone deserves a treat or two. “It’s really about helping your neighbour,” she says, adding the food bank is open this Saturday between 9 a.m. and noon, so people can register for a hamper and select items for their families. If you
want to drop off items, there are several places around town to do so (the post office, the pharmacy and our elementary school are some places). Give the food bank a call at (250) 767-3312 if you have any questions. The District of Peachland is also accepting items for the food bank through its annual Angel Tree effort. The tree is in the community centre foyer, and there’s another at Bliss Bakery. Check out the tags, which will have the recipients age and gender, and bring back a new, unwrapped gift to match. You have until Dec. 18 to contribute to that. Over at the Peachland Wellness Centre, executive coordinator Christina MacMaster says volunteers are needed. They’re hosting a community dinner on Christmas Day, and they’re accepting food and gift donations. If you’d rather make a monetary donation — in your name, or in the name of someone else, it would be warmly accepted. “This is always a great way to give a Christmas gift to someone who has everything,” she says, explaining donations made to the Wellness Centre in someone’s name comes with a card that they can give to their person. “We’re definitely looking at ways to ensure people are not feeling the effects of being alone at Christmas,” MacMaster says. Knowing how neighbourly our town tends to be, hopefully that won’t be a reality this time of year in Peachland.

Cousins Park
should stay for slo-pitch Dear Editor, In the November 30th, 2018 edition of the Peachland View, District staff are investigating the old compost site for an additional ball park despite their statement that “Cousins Park is currently underused for baseball.” District staff say this proposal “can be accommodated into the existing budget.” My question is simply this: why would we build another baseball park when the well situated baseball field in Cousins Park is under utilized? Accommodating this into the existing budget clearly suggests there are surplus funds and they are looking for ways to spend this money. Why not simply use this surplus to relieve our tax burden or find a project that truly meets the needs of Peachlanders? Perhaps a well located compost site that would serve the needs of this community. Greg Nicholls, Peachland Dear Editor, This new Peachland council and administration have “suggested” a $60,000 review of Cousins Park and the old B & B site at Heritage Park. The Peachland Municipality bought the B & B site for $675,000 in 2017. One idea is to build two slo-pitch diamonds at the old compost site at the top of Princeton Ave. So much for the idea to bring your family to Cousins Park for a ball game and swim. There are currently eight slo-pitch teams that utilize Cousins Park. They bring their families and I am sure they shop at our local stores. To put ball parks up Princeton Ave would encourage tailgate gatherings and very little economic benefits for downtown merchants. Another idea is to possibly free up Cousins Park for beach volleyball courts and/or a water park. Oh yeah, I forgot there is a perfectly good water park across the road at Swim Bay! Am I wrong to assume that this council and administration have not been in Peachland long enough to realize the amazing history of Cousins Park? Maybe this is Mayor Fortin and her co-horts way of beginning the “mending and healing” of Peachland as she so eloquently phrased after the election fiasco! I am sure that council and Administration have more brilliant “ideas” on the back burner. Brock Lucier, Peachland

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Refine where you mine In all of the Trans Mountain Pipeline debate, the inefficiency of transporting unrefined Alberta bitumen to the US and offshore nations for refinement seems to be lost. Moving bitumen, whether by rail, pipeline or marine vessels, means moving extra weight and volume. Bitumen contains waste products such as sand, sulfur and toxins. It must be diluted with condensates to create diluted bitumen to become a flowable liquid. But this increases volume by 30% or more, necessitating larger, more dangerous pipelines. And most condensates must be transported to bitumen mines for the dilution process, adding more inefficiencies and costs. Why not refine oil sand resources where they are mined? We increase employment opportunities in Alberta, Saskatchewan and Northern BC. We extract more tax revenue and piping diluted bitumen offers few long term employment opportunities for western Canadians. Western Canada is suffering from a lack of Canadian refining capacity. Much of BC’s diesel and gasoline comes from Washington State. And there is an environmental bonus to refine it where we mine it. Moving refined petroleum products through pipelines and marine transport is far less risky than moving diluted bitumen. Refined products are more volatile and more disbursable.
I fault our federal government for investing $4.5 billion in the 70 year old Trans Mountain Pipeline and a potential $10 billion expansion to export bitumen refining jobs to the US and off shore companies. I fault them and the industry for not tackling the inherent inefficiencies. Why not invest in western Canada and western Canadian workers? Steve Burke, West Kelowna
Here’s to the “Peach!”
Dear Editor, I have been lucky to live in the Big Peach since 1989. Straight out of Metro Toronto, I grew up in Etobicoke. When we first moved here, I thought it seemed like another country. People were so friendly, waving at cars going by while they walked their dogs. A Peachlander doesn’t have to know you to wave. That simple tradition is one of my favourite reasons for living in Peachland. Oh, it is so easy to find things to be unhappy about and complain about instead of actively being a part of the solution. Do you have anything you are thankful about? I challenge you to share it. I would also like to thank everyone who works at the Peachland Pharmacy. I have found over the many years I have been a patron there that they are always very helpful and helped me quit smoking in 2006, which I will be eternally grateful for. Barbara Rattray, Peachland

Busing, Boucherie and interchanges KRISTEN FRIESEN EDITOR
• Officials hoping for input from Peachlanders at an open house found more people were into pickle ball than batting around ideas for a proposed new bus route between Penticton and Kelowna. Only 11 people showed up for an open house held Dec. 4, but there’s still a chance to get your say online by following the links at https://bctransit.com/ south-okanagan-similkameen. BC Transit and the Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen are seeking input on proposed expansions to service, starting in late 2019. The Transit Future project guides investment, while making the system more accessible, according to the BC Transit website. • In other transportation news, those who travel a major wine route in West Kelowna won’t have to deal with detours anymore — the long-awaited Boucherie Rd project officially opened this week. The $7.3 million project began last April and now there’s new pavement, sidewalks, and upgraded city infrastructure along Boucherie, from Stuart Rd. to Ogden Rd. • Interchanges on Highway 97 are now being pursued by the City of West Kelowna, after their new council instructed staff last week to approach the province for an update and further engagement on a pair of proposed projects, at Boucherie Rd. and Hudson/Westlake Rds. Councillor Rick de Jong made the motion, saying the intersection upgrades will help end the huge traffic backups going through West Kelowna. The previous West Kelowna council had been against the addition of interchanges through the city.
WINNERS GIVE BACK Peachlanders Fred and Barb Macht were the lucky winners of these gift baskets full of groceries and
other goodies, thanks to the Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church Parish Centre’s Ladies’ League. The group hosted their annual Christmas Fair and Artists Market Nov. 24, and the Machts were happy to donate their raffle winnings to the Society of Saint Vincent De Paul, a local group serving people in need in Peachland and West Kelowna. Other prize winners were Rev. Wayne Pfliger, who won a 10-piece stainless steel cookware set, and Henry Senko, who won $350. All funds raised went directly to charity, and Martha Jenkins (far left), of the Ladies’ League said for the past three years, winners have donated their prizes back to those who need it more. CHRISTMAS CONCERT ALERT!
The Peachland Variety Singers are presenting their annual holiday concert this Sunday, Dec. 9 at the 50+ Activity Centre. Show up for the singing, and stay for the food — choir members will provide snacks for all. They recommend you get there early, as seating is limited. The show starts at 2 p.m., and admission is by donation. The Peachland Variety Singers will be celebrating 45 years in 2019. They started out as the Peachland Variety Performers in 1974. Over the years they have sung in nursing homes, Christmas Light Up, Canada Day, and Civic Awards Night. Recently, they sang at the Peachland Remembrance Day services. The Singers were the entertainment at the 50 Plus October Pot Luck supper. Over the years, the choir has increased from 30 to 52 members. Many friendships have been forged amongst the members, who are all from Peachland or West Kelowna. They meet every Monday morning and say only a love of music is required to join their group. Come to the Boys and Girls Club for some Light Up cheer Friday, December 7th marks the annual Peachland Community Christmas Light Up and the Okanagan Boys and Girls Club is excited to help kick off the festive season! From 4:30-6:00pm the Peachland Historic School will open its doors for celebrations prior to Light Up at Heritage Park. Families can check out the Christmas Markets and Bat Chats at the Visitors Centre, enjoy cookies and juice while admiring the amazing artwork in the Art Gallery and take part in the Pre-Parade Party at the Peachland Boys and Girls Club. Activities at the Club will include a Christmas sing along, face painting and themed crafts such as Jingle Bell sticks and egg carton reindeer. At 6:00pm the Christmas Glow Parade begins and children and families will follow Santa along Beach Avenue to Heritage Park where even more exciting festivities will be taking place including the much anticipated count down and light up ceremony with Peachland Council. Heritage Park will be bustling
with holiday cheer, complete with carnival games, face painting, food and drinks by donation, a bouncy castle, the Peachland chalk wall, face painting, photo booth, fireworks and even visits with Santa! This wonderful family event is offered by the District of Peachland - be sure to bundle up and come down to join the fun! With the holidays only a few short weeks away, Club staff are busy planning fun activities during Winter Break. We will be offering a variety of great programs to keep kids busy from December 27th – January 4th including full day programs for 6-12 year olds as well as drop-in recreation programs and exciting out-trips. Contact us for more information or come by and pick up a calendar at the Club. Take a moment to visit the Okanagan Boys and Girls Club website at www.boysandgirlsclubs.ca to learn about the great programs and services and special events offered across the Valley. Our Face-
book page, Okanagan Boys and Girls Clubs - Peachland, includes program information and posts of the fun things we’ve been up to. We also invite people to come by and check out our Club anytime to meet the staff and pick up our program and activity calendars.
Club member of the month Over the past two years, Julian has attended several programs at the Okanagan Boys and Girls Club in Peachland including the After School program, day camps, and Recreation program. Recently he has been attending Kid Food Nation where he has been learning to cook a variety of nutritious meals and has even tried some of the recipes at home! Julian enjoys the outdoors. He has a lot of knowledge about insects, animals and nature and is a good teacher, explaining what he learns with others. Julian is independent, not afraid to be himself and a great influence on those around him thanks in part to his calm, easy going personality. He is a great friend, considerate and helpful to everyone at the Club. These are just a few of the many reasons Club staff are proud to recognize Julian as our club member of the month!
