Peachland-area school trustee elected board chairperson KRISTEN FRIESEN EDITOR
Newly re-elected public school trustee Moyra Baxter is looking forward to another four years on the Central Okanagan School Board, after being officially sworn in last week. She was also elected chairperson of the board for the 2018-19 term. “The position of board chairperson is not one of power,” she said after the ceremony, held Nov. 7 at the board office in Kelowna. “It is, rather, a position which carries a great deal of responsibility including providing leadership to the board. The chair is, first and foremost, a servant of the board, and the board chair has only one vote on a board of seven trustees.” After a “difficult and unusual” election, Baxter, who lives in Peachland, said going forward, she’d like to see people’s differences being aired in an open and respectful way. “We have policies and practices in this school district which expect anyone and everyone, whether that is a parent or an employee, who has concerns or differences with another person, to go to that person and do everything possible to resolve those differenc-
es. That’s how we need to move forward as a board of education,” she said. With that said, Baxter sees nothing but good things happening at Peachland Elementary. “Peachland is a viable school and it has great community support,” she said, noting how respectful students were last Friday during their Remembrance Day ceremony. Although all seven elected school trustees come from different backgrounds and communities, and were elected to represent people in their areas, Baxter said in order to work together in the best interest of students, trustees must also have a big-picture view. “We must look at our school district as a whole and not focus on single issues, or our own pet projects or our own area of the district,” she said. Other trustees sworn in by Judge Lisa Wyatt were Norah Bowman, Rolli Cacchioni, Chantelle Desrosiers, Julia Fraser, Amy Geistlinger, and Lee-Ann Tiede.

Page-turning adventure awaits in this bookshop KRISTEN FRIESEN EDITOR
Picture a cozy little bookshop. Nothing much happens here, and that has its owner worried. How will she make a go of her beloved business? Little does she know, her shop is a place of magic. At night, characters in the book come alive - but can they save the shop, and prevent a pair of smugglers from ruining the store? The Enchanted Bookshop is the latest play from the Peachland Little Theatre, and director Judith L’Abbé says with a cast of adults, kids and teens, there really is something for everyone. “I cannot wait for opening night,” she said of the show, which runs Nov. 28, 29, 30 and Dec.1. “Everyone has worked so hard. LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Here’s to a new Peachland View Dear Editor, As a journalism grad (Ryerson) and former editor, reporter, producer (weekly newspapers/CBC), I’m delighted to finally see a formal Letters to the Editor policy. For many weeks in recent years, the View was the mouthpiece for local advocacy groups and was often a compilation of more than 500-word letters, making the paper almost entirely the opinions of a very few, many of which were hyperbole and full of inaccura-
cies. We, and many friends, began to pay little heed to the View and much credibility was lost as a result. It’s refreshing to read your intro and hope your expertise and professional approach will bring us a paper for the many not minority. Look forward reading the View with your journalistic/editor practiced eye and with balanced content Sandra Halme Peachland
A thank you to the ‘bygone editor’ Dear Editor, We have been lucky to have had several very good editors at the Peachland View. Last week, Dan Walton said goodbye, but we should take the opportunity to say thank you to our “bygone editor”. He worked hard to provide a balanced news source especially during the last election. He didn’t take long to understand our community and he recognized the need to provide for a variety of opinions. He will be missed and I wish him all the best. He is not only a good writer but also an honest and caring individual. So thanks Dan.
This newspaper continues to provide a useful source of local news and a forum for opinions. We should not forget that it survives based on advertising. When you are looking for an insurance agent, a real estate agent or just finding a place to eat, remember to reward the advertisers in the View. Without the support of local businesses we wouldn’t have a local newspaper. So thanks to all the businesses that advertise in the Peachland View. Eric Hall Peachland
Watershed field day an informative success Dear Editor, On behalf of the Watershed Alliance, I would like to thank representatives from Tolko, Gormans, Ntityix Resources and BC Timber Sales who attended the field day in the community watershed. We would like to thank hydrologist Dr. Scherer who explained his watershed assessment with representatives Ray Crampton and Rob Dinwoodie of Ministry of Forests, Lands, Natural Resource Operations. It was an informative day; we appreciate both the professionalism and candor demonstrated by all. We discussed and visited locations where previous human activity is known to have caused damage. We heard that an integrated response between industry and government is required to repair these existing problem areas and how there are competing interests in watersheds with currently no integrated plan to address this. We learned the hydrology report confirms additional harvesting will increase the risks to watersheds strained by previous industrial activity.

Mixed member system the way to go Dear Editor, I hear there is complaint that if Pro Rep adopted and the province increased the number of MLAs, this would cost the tax payer more money. Even though MLA costs are a very small percentage of government expenses, this cost would be offset by the way in which MMP allows for a much less drastic changeover after a new government is installed. I believe that under MMP the tax payer would save money, because under first past the post in BC we swing from right to left wing governments, and every time the government changes, huge amounts of money is spent un-doing what the previous government had created. In countries like New Zealand where they have MMP, the taxpayer saves

money because government policy is more middle of the road and transparent, and it continues over a change in government. I think that having an increased number of MLAs is a small price to pay Frances Stocks Peachland

Local groups ready to craft some Christmas cheer KRISTEN FRIESEN EDITOR
Whether you’re a Christmas keener, or the type to ho ho hold off on the celebrating until December, you’ll be sure to get into the gift-giving season next weekend. Spread out over five spots downtown, the Peachland Christmas Markets on Saturday, Nov. 24 will have something for everyone, says Peachland Wellness Centre executive coordinator Christina MacMaster, whose organization is one of seven local groups coming together, hosting separate markets on the same day. “We’ve made it a community sort of day, and we’re hoping this event will be kind of a kick-off to Christmas in Peachland,” she said. The wellness centre has been hosting a craft market as a fundraiser for five years now, but this year, and with several other groups in town also hosting their own events, it was decided to group together to make a fun day for Peachlanders and visitors alike. “We decided to start this year with some of the other not for profits that are already doing similar events, such as the Little Schoolhouse, the United Church, the Visitor Centre, and the Ambassadors,” she said. “From that, we ended up bringing on a couple more, like the art gallery in the Visitor Centre, and there will be a guitar show at the 50+ Centre. So, we have seven different not for profits at five different spots.” At the community centre, people will find all sorts of Christmas crafts, from jewelry and woodworking, to crochet and needlework, baking and preserves. And if you’re hungry, the Peachland Ambassadors will be hard at work in the kitchen, offering up breakfast, lunch, coffee and goodies. Over at the United Church, gently-used Christmas items will be sold, and there will be a bake sale too. The Little Schoolhouse and the art gallery at the Visitor Centre will have everything for those with

an artistic eye, and if you’re in the market for a guitar, the 50+ Centre is where you’ll want to be. The Visitor Centre will also be the site of another market, with 16 different vendors, including food and wine tastings. Joey Byatt, manager of tourism services for the District of Peachland, says in addition to roving carollers, a horse-drawn wagon will shuttle people from venue to venue. “It’s going to be an incredible kickoff to the Christmas season - and with the different venues all offering something unique and special, we will absolutely be feeling the Christmas spirit,” she says.

November is Rotary Foundation month November, Remembrance Day. A time to remember the good others have done, the freedom they paid for with their lives and from which we benefit even today. We honour their memory and offer our gratitude to the ever diminishing numbers of surviving veterans. One hundred years after the War to end all Wars, we still, as a species, don’t seem to have learned a great deal: even our “leaders” seem to have lost their way. Fortunately, there are still groups throughout our

Our beautiful Mama passed away peacefully and with great dignity after a wonderful 98 years. We are sure “Morgan Freeman” picked “Miss Daisy” up to take her on her final ride to the highway of heaven. We are so grateful to Mum’s amazing doctor (Dr. Alanna Leverrier) who drove into Kelowna to have one last visit with Mum. We would like to thank Wes and all his family and staff at Peachland Pharmacy for their love and care over the years. Thank you to Peachland Wellness Centre for their support. Mum did not want any service but if anyone wishes, Mum would want to give back—the Peachland Wellness Centre or the Maple Ridge Hospital Auxillary would be her choices. Rotary considers projects which support the community and matches some of the funds raised by local clubs to further their endeavours. If you would like to discover more about Rotary or the Foundation and the work it does, check out www.rotary.org/ Hippo Rollers are one project supported by many Clubs, including ours, which enables people to collect and move their daily water supply more easily and efficiently, freeing up time for school and productive work. You should be able to search them on https:// hipporoller5060.ca/ You watched us on the Highway with our signs. At the “World’s Greatest Meal to End Polio” evening our Club and the West Kelowna Daybreak Club, inspired by a Polio survivor, our speaker for that evening, raised almost $9000.00 for Polio eradication. Worldwide, Rotarians have contributed $3,020,864.00 USD, enough for 15,104,000 polio vaccinations! The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation have tripled our efforts for a total of $9,062,594 this year. Three countries are still the focus of our efforts. We are so close! Keeping an eye on The Pier? Progress has been steady, the pilings are all in place and securely planted. The beams and platform construction will follow. Our contractor, Shoreline Construction, is making an heroic effort to make sure that the project is completed speedily and in a timely manner. Thanks Bob! Go for it! Come visit with us at the Gasthaus on Thursdays at 11:45 and join in the fun! Visit our website at peachlandrotary.com for more information, or Like us on FaceBook! See you next month! Chris Boyle, Chair, PI., Rotary Club of Peachland

CIVIC GRANTS APPLICATIONS Local non-profit organizations which contribute to the quality of life in Peachland, and which would cease to function without assistance from the District of Peachland, are invited to apply for a Civic Grant.
The Civic Grants Policy outlines the following: • The purpose of the civic grant program is to assist citizens in organizing themselves around community issues and projects. • In the majority of cases, it is anticipated that financial assistance will only be granted for a limited time period, subject to annual review. • Programs and services will be evaluated on the basis on need, appropriateness, and demonstrated effectiveness. • All grants are for a period of one year and shall not exceed $1,000.
An application for a civic grant may be submitted by any organization which: • Has been in operation no less than 6 months in the District of Peachland • Is based in this community • Has membership from within the District of Peachland or surrounding areas • Has the majority of its members as voting members • Is in good standing with its licensing authority • Has made, at a minimum, an application to the Central Okanagan Foundation, and has received a written response from the COF, or any other granting organization. Grant applications are considered by Council during 2019 budget deliberations. Approved grants are distributed after July 15, 2019. Application forms and civic grant criteria may be obtained at the District of Peachland office, 5806 Beach Avenue, Peachland, B.C. or the District’s website www.peachland.ca. Completed applications must be submitted to the Director of Corporate Services by 4 pm, December 15, 2018. B.C. Hydro funds are also available for non-profit organizations and registered charities.
