BRIDGES GET AIR: Piece by piece, a pair of bridges were choppered in to Hardy Falls last week. The bridges were built in the US, trucked here, then reassembled before being dropped off.

Helicopter drop on Hardy Falls means park will be open by May KRISTEN FRIESEN EDITOR

Last week’s helicopter activity over Peachland wasn’t to battle an early season blaze, but to bring a pair of new bridges to Hardy Falls. It took eight trips to get all the pieces – including the abutments and decking – from a vacant property near the falls, to a crew waiting to install the bridges at the falls site. The whole operation took about three

hours, says the RDCO’s Bruce Smith. Hardy Falls has been closed since the spring of 2017, when record floodwaters destroyed two of the park’s eight bridges. “The new wooden bridges were specifically designed with a higher clearance above Deep Creek with the goal of minimizing any future spring freshet damage from high waters and debris,” he said. The structures were designed and built by a New Brunswick-based company at a plant in Oregon. They were then taken apart and trucked to the vacant property near the park, where crews rebuilt them before

they were sent up – and then down, via helicopter. The ‘copters were needed because the park is heavily forested and in a canyon. “With the new bridges in place, it’s anticipated repairs to the trails in the park can be made by early May and the regional park will be once again open for visitors,” Smith said. The provincial disaster assistance program contributed $48,400 towards the $405,000 repair project to fix damage to the park from the 2017 floods.

It was a rainy, dreary Saturday morning, and the Peachland Museum was my first stop on this busy weekend work day. I packed up my camera and notebook, locked the View’s front door, and left on foot, using my hood to shield myself from the wind. As I hurried across the Legion parking lot and down the alley towards the museum, my mind was busy with the other stuff I had to do that day – interviews and some photo editing, thinking of stuff I need to write (including this editorial space), and other work-related things. I was steps away from the museum, when I heard the music. It was from a time long ago, and matched perfectly the vintage of the building I was about to enter. And when I did, my busy mind immediately paused: This place is amazing! Everywhere you look, there’s something that begs further investigation. At the risk of sounding like a cliché, one truly feels like you’re stepping back in time. Because I had an interview scheduled with Dave Winter of the Central Okanagan Railway Company, I had to make my way upstairs. And that’s

when I saw for the first time what many have talked about – the train display that takes up the entire second floor. OK, this is old news to most of you, but as someone who has only lived here four years, for some reason I’ve never been, and if you haven’t – or it’s been awhile, this Saturday is a great time to go. The Central Okanagan Railway Company, a group of 26 or so volunteer model train and history enthusiasts, are hosting an open house at the museum on Saturday. Show up between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m., and you can check out the trains, learn some history (the display winds its way through the Kettle Valley Railway, as it existed in the late 50s to 1960s), and if you’re lucky, you can even take the throttle and play conductor. Whether you’re into trains or not, it’s worth spending time here, because in this unique eight-sided 1908 building that is the Peachland Museum, the love for our town is obvious. It’s pretty amazing to see what a dedicated group of volunteers can accomplish – something I’ve mentioned before as a Peachland truth, whether you’re looking

at our new pier, for example, or attending a community event. Speaking of events, Saturday is also when the Boys and Girls Club are hosting their annual eggs-ellent (sorry, must pun) Easter hunt, where volunteers are setting up treats to find, a bouncy castle and crafts. It all starts at 11 a.m., and you can register by calling (250) 767-2515. If that’s not enough Easter for you, the Peachland Ambassadors, another great group of people in our community, are organizing an Easter Bonnet Tea, starting at 1:30 p.m. at 4th St. Place. Admission is by donation, and you’ll find plenty of fashionable inspiration, thanks to the United Church’s Bargain Bin. So, Happy Easter weekend everyone! May you spend it with those you love, who love you back, and hopefully, you can get out this weekend – there’s lots of untold treasures in our town, and sometimes, you have to treat yourself as a tourist (or a journalist) to really appreciate them.

HAVE YOU BEEN? Maybe I’m the minority, but this Peachlander visited the museum for the first time last weekend. DID YOU KNOW? A couple bits of trivia from a View reader.

Dear Editor, Thanks to Abby Kendall for the rainbow photo. We also saw it but did you notice the second rainbow just above it. Did you know the colours of the main rainbow are red, orange, yellow, green blue, indigo and violet? The second rainbow colours are the reverse – violet, indigo, blue, green, yellow, orange, red. Anyway another trivia, did you know the message on the lid of

the blue recycle bin says “Set out on your collection day when full.” If we all did this, perhaps

it would reduce the cost of the town contract and our taxes! -Art Basham, Peachland

University seeks participants for new hearing study. Connect Hearing, in conjunction with Professor Mark Fenske at the University of Guelph, are seeking participants who are over 50 years of age, have never worn hearing aids and have not had a hearing test in the last 24 months, for a hearing study that investigates factors that can influence better hearing. Study Parameters Hearing problems typically result from damage to the ear and researchers have spent decades trying to understand the biology behind hearing loss. Of particular interest to Professor Fenske and his researchers is identifying how we listen. There is a current theory that divides people into two “listening groups”. People in the first group need to put more effort into their listening, while members in the second group “lock on” and aren’t easily distracted. Paradoxically, it’s the people in the first group who will look for a solution to their hearing loss sooner than the second group, even though the level of hearing loss could be very similar. The researchers will particularly examine listening in a range of situations, from one-on-one, to group conversations, watching

It is estimated that 46% of people aged 45 to 87 have some degree of hearing loss, but most do not seek a solution right away. In fact, the average person with hearing loss will wait ten years before seeking help. This is because at the beginning stages of hearing loss people often find they can “get by” without help; however, as the problem worsens this becomes increasingly harder to do. You’ll be playing an important part in a study will further identify the key factors impacting hearing difficulties and better understand their influence on the treatment process.

From 1999 to 2017, my home was a house that sat exactly where your home stands now. I’m addressing this to all of you to let you know your home is built on soil nurtured by my family’s love for those 18 years. My sons, Doryan and Kyle were 9 and 19 when we made 4445 6th Street our home. We were happy to find an affordable rental right in the heart of my hometown! So we settled in, in May of 1999. The years that followed saw countless happy memories! Doryan and his friends riding up on their bicycles to hang out in the fort they built in the big maple tree in the back yard – then a few years later, Doryan proudly pulling in the driveway with his very first car, followed by boisterous gatherings of teenagers working on vehicles. And then all the excitement of graduation! Kyle’s backyard parties with his friends feeling at home, and a few years later, the exciting preparations for his wedding! And a couple of years after that, the start of incredibly special times spent with my twin granddaughters that blessed my life. Christmas celebrations and Canada Day parties. Me, enjoying every minute I spent in my flower garden and savouring a cup of tea while the intoxicating fragrance of the acacias in bloom swirled in the warm spring air. It’s a place and time I often let my thoughts return to. So, now you all have a bit of history of the ground beneath you! May each and every one of you experience happy, contented days in your new home, just as I did through those years. Always be incredibly thankful for having the privilege to call Peachland your home! And take a minute, when the acacias are in bloom, to step outside and celebrate a glorious spring day! -Linda Longbotham, Peachland

Spring has sprung:

time to tackle those outdoor chores During the cold months of winter, many people stare longingly out of the window dreaming of spring and time spent outdoors. For those with green thumbs, images of tending to the garden and other aspects of their landscapes no doubt dominate such daydreams. Draw inspiration from those budding crocuses and daffodils use these tips to prepare for the upcoming spring season: • Check if the front porch, railings or decking need painting and/or staining. Tackle these projects when the weather is cooler so everything will be ready for those peak spring days. • While it may be tempting to take a prematurely warm day as a sign that spring is in full force and purchase a bunch of annuals, it’s better to know the last of the possible frost dates (check “The Farmer’s Almanac”); otherwise, you may waste time and money planting flowers or vegetables only to have them zapped by another frosty day. • Amend the soil so that it is the right consistency – just crumbling when lifting it. Soil that is too muddy after spring thaw can harden, making it difficult for plants to flourish later on. Speak with representatives at a local lawn and garden centre about which types of amendments you can add to the soil in your particular area to enrich it. • You can fill in bare patches of lawn now by mixing a few shovelfuls of soil with grass seed. Then apply this patch to the bare areas, water, and continue to care for the area until the spot fills in. • Spend a day in the garage or shed tending to the lawn mower and other gardening equipment. Clean all tools and ensure that everything works, repairing parts as needed. • Give outdoor entertaining spaces a good scrubbing, clearing away dirt and grime that may have accumulated over the winter.

BTNR - a renovator you can trust

Your home is likely your biggest asset – so renovating it right is important. That’s why choosing Better Than New Renovations (BTNR) as your contractor is a choice you can trust. Michael Peterson, Red Seal Certified Journeyman Carpenter and Owner of Better Than New Renovations works closely with his clients to understand their vision for the project and to assist them wth refining their ideas.

Why Choose Starline Windows for your Window and Door Upgrade?

Windows and exterior doors are subject to the wear and tear that comes from constant use and exposure to the weather. Over time, weatherstripping, hardware and the door and frame materials can deteriorate or fail. Homeowners can either repair or replace window or door units. Repairs can be inexpensive but may not give good long-term results. Replacement is generally costly, but will provide cost savings in energy use, make your house more com-

fortable and add to the resale value. Tighter and more energy efficient windows and doors will reduce the heating load on your house, reduce heating costs

and improve occupant comfort. Energy efficient glazing can also reduce condensation problems that damage finishes and lead to mold growth.

FOR ALL YOUR WINDOW AND DOOR NEEDS

Customers describe him as “an honest guy” and “a good builder” who pays “attention to details, finishing details.” Providing hands-on skills where needed, Michael manages your project and oversees a team of skilled subtrades. If you make the leap to start a renovation you dream of, contact Better Than New Renovations and experience a renovator you can trust to do the job right.

SPECIAL EVENT

Experience Historic Peachland

via a Model Train Display In a tiny town called Brookmere, people bustle about. They’re either working at one of the charming little stores, or they’re enjoying their day – suntanning, perhaps on the beach, or fishing and enjoying a campfire. It’s a simpler time, and one that’s frozen in the past: Brookmere is a real place at the top of the Coquihalla, but it’s almost a ghost town now. When the trains went away, so did the businesses, the buildings and most of its people. There’s not much of Brookmere left, says Dave Winter. But thanks to a dedicated group of volunteers who call themselves the Central Okanagan Railway Company, an impressive train display at the Peachland Museum is keeping railroad history alive. This is no eye-glazing assembly of artifacts – the trains travel the entire perimeter of the second floor of the Peachland Museum, leaving different stations, travelling through Myra Canyon, stopping at historical points of interest, from Beaverdell, to Greenwood, Midway to McCullough. Each section has its own amazing level of detail. There’s even a cross-section of a mine, where you can see men working through the glass, and just beyond, lights are flickering in a building. “There’s some welding going on in there,” says Dave, pointing out that volunteers are constantly adjusting lights, fixing track and tinkering with the trains. They’re also making sure everything is in tip top shape for Saturday,

April 20, when they’re inviting everyone in Peachland to come see what they’ve been up to. “We want to reintroduce Peachland to what we have here. We have people who regularly bring their kids in and when we get to know them, we hand them the throttle and they can stop and run a train. They love it, and it keeps us from getting old.”

Winter says fellow Railway Company volunteers will be on hand at the Spring Open House, and will be happy to hand over the throttle to anyone who wants to try being a rail conductor. It’s as close to the real thing as most of us will get, and for Winter, it’s a chance for Peachlanders to discover something that’s pretty special in our own hometown. “For a town our size, we have a very impressive museum, in a building that is part of Peachland’s history. Tourists love it here, and we would love residents to come in, check out the trains, and look at everything downstairs. The coffee will be on, and some of our wives and other members are bringing treats as well.” It all happens Saturday Apr 20 at the Peachland Museum between 11 and 5!

BUSINESS PROFILE

Winelicious: Authentically Okanagan! It’s as if Lyse Collins was meant to host, cruising up and down the scenic highway between Peachland and Summerland, on to Naramata and Okanagan Falls. We’re in wine country, and for tourists and locals alike, there’s no better place to be. Winelicious Tours is your choice for an experience that’s authentically Okanagan – vineyard views, with stunning lake and farm vistas, all enjoyed while sampling the best food, ciders, spirits, and of course, wines, that we’re so lucky to live around. “I’m passionate about living here,” says Collins, a former Westjet flight attendant who bought the business four years ago. “I’m an adventurous person who enjoys connecting with people. I also absolutely love our local wines, so this business is the perfect fit for me. With her hospitality background and extensive travel experience, Collins can easily say the Okanagan – and in particular, Peachland, is the best place to be. “I’ve travelled all over the globe and this is where I’ve settled,” she says. “I want to promote the local experience, because there’s such beauty here – we have this amazing lake, the gorgeous drive heading south, the rolling vineyards and orchards and the quaint award winning wineries.” Instead of heading to the busier and bigger wineries in Kelowna and West Kelowna, Winelicious Tours heads south – Summerland, Naramata, and Okanagan Falls all offer gems off the beaten track. “We are excited to take our guests to these places, where they can actually meet the winemaker, talk to the people who produce the wine, and they love

that unique experience,” Collins says. Winelicious offers a variety of options. Full-day tours involve lunch at a winery restaurant, and if you’re opting for the shorter Summerland day tour, she includes a charcuterie plate to enjoy at a scenic stop on the Bottleneck Drive route. And if you’re not a wine person, no worries. Our area is quickly becoming known for its distilleries, cideries and even uniquely flavoured vinegar breweries. Your friendly Winelicious driver is a local who is happy to accommodate your wishes. For those who want a full meal and wine experience, Collins recommends the Peachland Wine and Dine tour –the perfect outing for tourists staying here in town, or for locals who want a fun evening out without worrying about driving. “When people call for that tour, I run through our fabulous Peachland restaurants. They choose one and I make a reservation on their behalf. The tour includes a scenic drive to Summerland and stops at 3-4 wineries for tastings. Then we head back to Peachland and they enjoy a leisurely local dinner and a chance to enjoy the beautiful lake views. When done, guests call us for transportation back to their accommodation. This tour was my way of supporting our town and offering our tourists the best local experience.” Winelicious is opening for the year on Good Friday, and they’re booking up fast – Collins recommends making reservations now for the busy summer season. With a staff of friendly, knowledgable drivers and a choice between an air conditioned 6 or 11-passenger van (chilled water included), you’ll be travelling in comfort.

This week’s Sudoku Solutions in next week’s paper!

Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. GUEST COLUMN

A goodbye, a hello and some good news

Easter Closure

Closed Good Friday April 19 Open on Monday April 22

from the Peachland Wellness Centre This column is bittersweet for me. Four years ago, I was elected to the Peachland Wellness Centre Board of Directors for the first time. The following year, I was honoured to be elected as the President of the Board and have remained in this position for the past 3 years. However, it is now time to pass the reins to the next generation of PWC Directors. As of the adjournment of PWC’s upcoming Annual General Meeting on April 13, I am retiring from the Board of Directors. I believe that organizations need periodic injections of new yeast in the mix to generate new ideas and avoid getting stale. The new slate of Directors for election on April 13 shows complementary skill sets and broad experiences from which PWC will benefit greatly. I wish to thank all those Directors with whom I have been privileged to work over the years. It has been a time of rigorous debate, focused projects, lengthy planning sessions, and genuine laughter and camaraderie – with numerous doses of cookies and snacks to fuel the discussions. PWC Directors have been and will continue to be a source of unrivalled inspiration and shared expertise. It has been pure

pleasure to work with such a committed group of community supporters and contributors. I also wish to thank the PWC staff for their support and assistance over the years. They are truly the most amazing team of caring and sharing people. Their commitment and dedication to providing Peachland with wellness support programs and services is a treasure beyond compare. Each and every one of them is an expert who truly cares and who does their utmost to provide just the right service when needed, with grace and never-ending good humour. A special thanks to the Executive Coordinator, Christina MacMaster with whom I have worked closely to guide the Centre along its strategic plan. It has been a great run for me and I have enjoyed it immensely. Volunteering with PWC, as it is for everyone who volunteers, has been very rewarding. I have learned and gained so much about our wonderful community. I have received so much more that I have given. It has been through PWC that my husband and I truly became part of this great community. -Susan Haglund, President, 2015-2019 Peachland Wellness Centre

A new deck and a new services coordinator for the PWC: On April 8th Sara Stephens came to work for a year while she fills in for Teri Pentland who is on a one year leave of absence. A bit about Sara: Sara came to BC from Winnipeg in 2013 and feels very lucky to be living in the Okanagan with her family. She loves spending time in the Peachland parks and enjoying community events. She has worked in community-based organizations for many years, doing research and getting participant feedback to improve programs. She strongly believes in supporting all community members to feel connected and knowledgeable about the resources that are available to them. Sara is excited to be joining the Peachland Wellness Centre as a Services Coordinator. She will be working to connect people of all ages to resources, programs and services in Peachland. She is looking forward to meeting and getting to know people in the Peachland community. PWC has always valued its volunteers and strives to meet the needs of all of them. We now have 180 volunteers, even though we could use more we feel very fortunate to have as many as we do. Some of these volunteers are only available for part of the year while others are here year-round. Many volunteers are only available for once a year events, but the events would not happen without these people. In order to continue to sup-

port these volunteers we have brought on to the payroll a valuable volunteer: Bev Andrews. A bit about Bev: Bev was born and raised in the beautiful community of Peachland. She has been a volunteer with the East Kootenay Regional Hospital, Emergency Services, and with the Peachland Wellness Centre. She feels her role as Volunteer Coordinator will be challenging and rewarding. Her time with PWC has provided her with knowledge and education of a “non-profit” society. PWC also provided her with the opportunity to take the “Overview of Volunteer Management” training through Kelowna Community Resources. She loves the people and the vision of PWC and hopes she can help keep that vision alive. Bev wants to continue to help and support the

Community and is grateful for this opportunity. PWC received funds through the New Horizons for Seniors and with that we now have a new deck being built at the back door and will have a gazebo before the end of summer. The garden boxes will also see a refreshing of the outside as they are painted with an environmentally friendly paint. Finally, is the change to the Board of Directors

as of the AGM on April 13, 2019. It is with sadness that we say goodbye to some long-standing Directors all who say they will continue involvement with PWC in other capacities. We welcome the 2019 Board of Directors which includes: Joey Byatt, Bill Dupuis, Janet Hornseth, Rick Ingram, Kym Martin, Dawna Reinhart, Kathy Sawchuk, Rachael Truant and Tracey Woodward.

Crerar Jack

Passed March 31, 2019

It is with sadness and comfort that after a lengthy battle with Cancer, Jack has taken his final flight. Jack leaves behind the love of his life forever, 55 years, Maureen; daughter Debbie, husband Kai and grandchildren, Jack and James: son Kelly, wife Janna and grandchildren, Peyton and Jordyn, and a long list of loving family and friends. Also, sister Karen, brother Randy and their families, sisters-in-law, Helen and Leslie and their families. In the fall of 2017, Jack realized his lifelong dream of moving home to Manitoba. Jack’s final year was spent boating from his own dock in the creeks of Miklavik, watching the airplanes soar over Lake Winnipeg and visiting his beloved family cottage on Chalet Beach. His many incredible stories will be missed by all, and Grandpa/Papa will always be the smartest star in the sky in his grandkids’ eyes. At Jack’s request a Celebration of Life will take place in July on Jack and Maureen’s Miklavik, Gimli property. Date to be announced. In honour of Jack take a moment to look up to the sky and find any airplane soaring above and smile. He is up there with of the airplanes he loved so much. Jack will join his mom (Mable), dad (Harvey) and brother (Keith) at the St. Georges Wakefield Anglican Church in Petersfield, Manitoba. Thank you to the CancerCare Manitoba teams, doctors and staff for your incredible support to Jack and our family. In lieu of flowers, donations for Gimli Hospital will be collected at the celebration.

Cook Robert

Jan 28, 1938 - Apr 10, 2019

With great sadness, we announce the passing of Robert George (Bob) Cook, who on April 10, 2019, moved on peacefully to his next series of adventures, at the age of 81. Bob was born in Edmonton, AB on January 28, 1938, and was later chosen by Ted and Irene Cook to be their son. His early life was spent working on his family’s farm in northern Alberta (Hythe) with his sister, Beryl (Hotte), who survives him. Bob left home young, eagerly seeking adventure and new ways to contribute to the world. He first got by working as a farm hand, a labourer, and then a deck hand on a paddle wheeler in the Yukon. He willingly assumed any work and did it well, taking up roles anywhere from seafarer to bartender, and worked his way up to managing multiple hotels in Northern BC. Bob ultimately found his calling through protecting workers’ rights, lobbying for fair pay and better working conditions, advocating for job security, and improving safety and labour circumstances for workers. Bob’s brilliant and legally oriented mind, sharp tongue, clever nature, and quick wit supported him well for success as an organizer, fierce negotiator, and business agent for the Hotel, Restaurant, Culinary Employee & Bartenders’ Union, Local 40, where he was a tireless advocate for workers until his wellearned retirement. Bob then dedicated his time to finding fish, feeding birds, growing prized roses, and nurturing his family at his beloved sanctuary on the quiet shores of Mabel Lake. Bob is lovingly remembered and survived by his wife, Margaret Blair-Cook, his daughters, Tracey Oltmanns (Robert), Christian Cook-Ross (Chris) and his sons, Shayne (Brigette) Cook, and Rob (Raelene) Cook. His legacy is furthered by his stepsons, Landon (Jodi), Jeff (Cheryl) and Jeremy (Shannon) Knight, and his grandchildren who he treasured: Benjamin, Taylor (Jordan), Emma, Natalie, Lilly and Fynn. A celebration of Bob’s incredible life will be held at 1:00PM on Saturday, June 22, 2019 at the Mabel Lake Community Hall located at 111 Shuswap Falls Road, Lumby, BC. Bob’s family thanks the dedicated staff and medical professionals at the Vernon Jubilee Hospital and the Vernon Hospice House for their kindness and compassion. In lieu of flowers, we request that you make a donation to a charity of your choice, preferencing options that favour workers’ rights and/or cancer research.
