Ashley Rodenbush always wanted to live on a street alight with Christmas cheer. Candy Cane Lane in Edmonton was a favourite childhood memory, and when the family moved to Peachland from Calgary four years ago, she felt something was missing at Christmas time. “We always set up early for Christmas, it’s my favourite time of year,” she said. From inflatables to lights – even on their company’s excavator, the Peachland family’s home is definitely in season. This year, the Rodenbushes– including husband, Darren and daughters Quinlan, two, and Georgia, six months, wanted to step it up a notch - or several. They decided to host a Christmas light competition, and Peachlanders have definitely gotten into the spirit. Every night, the family bundles up and hunts for houses decked out for the holidays. They’re taking notes on the most festive ones, and the winners will get a $100 gift certificate from one of three local businesses – 91 Restaurant, Lakeside Notary Public, or the Cecile Guilbault Group. Because of press deadlines, we can’t share the winners here, but watch the Peachland View’s Facebook page to find out whose home was the merriest. “We have at least 20 different entries, and it’s been so hard to choose – maybe next year we’ll have to do a random draw, because everyone did such a good job,” Rodenbush said. The contest was a good fit, she adds – the couple’s construction business is slower this time of year, and it’s just fun to make people happy. “It brings an extra twinkle to the holidays,” she says.
TWO LITTLE ELVES, an excavator and lots of lights – the Rodenbush family is going all out this Christmas. It’s the off season for
their company, ADR Excavating, so the family decided to host a Christmas light contest. More than 20 homes were in the running, and the winner will be announced on the company’s Facebook page, and we’ll be sure to share it as well. KRISTEN FRIESEN PHOTO (ABOVE), CONTRIBUTED PHOTOS (BELOW).

Trash days stay the same KRISTEN FRIESEN EDITOR
Put out the trash and recycling on your regular days, say District of Peachland officials, who are reminding us of some office closures during the holidays. The District of Peachland Municipal Office and Fire Department office will be closed for the holidays from Dec. 25th, 2018, reopening Jan. 2. Trash collection will remain on schedule. Councillors are also taking a Christmas break; they’ll return for the first meeting of 2019 on Tuesday, Jan. 8. For those within RDCO boundaries, there won’t be any collection on either Christmas Day, or New Year’s Day. Instead curbside pick-up moves ahead one day during the last week of December and first week of January. During these weeks only, residents who normally have collection on Tuesday should put their carts at the curb on Wednesday. Wednesday collection will be on Thursday, Thursday collection on Friday and Friday pick-up will take place on Saturday December 29th and Saturday, January 5th. The weekday collection schedule returns to normal on Monday, January 7th. And if you’re doing a dump run, the Westside Residential Waste Disposal and Recycling Centre on Asquith Rd. in West Kelowna will be open normal days and hours. Effective Jan. 1, however, fees will go up. (see ad below). Visit regionaldistrict.com/recycle for more details.
Yes, there are more Christmas events! KRISTEN FRIESEN EDITOR
While most of us are at home enjoying the holidays, a small army of volunteers will be busy in Peachland over the next few days, making sure Christmas is merry for everyone. On Friday the 21st, Papa Thom (AKA former Peachland councillor Keith Thom) is hosting an evening for a local family at Beach Ave Cafe. He’ll be the musical entertainment for the evening, along with Warren Mandau. All proceeds from the evening will go to a Peachland family of four who are working hard to make ends meet. The goal is to raise enough money to purchase gift cards from Petro-Canada and the IGA and deliver them for Christmas. The evening gets underway starting at 6 p.m. The 50+ Centre is where everyone is welcome on Christmas Day. As mentioned in last week’s paper, the Peachland Wellness Centre is hosting the dinner, which began in 2013 after a local couple decided to sponsor the event every year. Doors open at noon for socializing, and dinner will be served at 2 p.m. Tickets are free, and available at the Wellness Centre, or you can just show up on the 25th. If you would like to volunteer, please call (250) 767-0141.
WINE AND CRAFTS are two things that are great about Peachland this time of year. Hainle Winery was open for both last weekend, and Gina Pastro got to show off her rustic wooden signs (Romancing the Home) to Sandra Beamish and Heather Logan. KRISTEN FRIESEN PHOTO

The time has come! Hopefully, the gifts are wrapped, family and friends are about to arrive, and your home is full of good food, treats and tidings of the season. Call it holiday kitsch, but we’re feeling all sorts of happy here at the View, and we wish nothing but the best of the season to you all. I covered a lot of cheque presentations - or ‘grip and grins’ the past couple weeks. There was the Peachland World of Wheels committee, who gave a total of $3,000 to their neighbours in need. Our local food bank received $2,000 of that, in the form of a fat stack of gift cards in $25 denominations. Recipients can go to Walmart, Petro-Canada and Winners to pay for whatever they need. The other $1,000 was donated to the Peachland Wellness Centre, which we all know does a lot - from its upcoming Christmas Day dinner (so nobody in town eats alone), to ongoing programs such as dementia and bereavement support, friendly visitors, and outreach and transportation services. A week earlier, Fred and Barb Macht were the lucky winners of a couple food and goodie baskets generously donated by the Peachland IGA. It was all part of a Christmas fair held by Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church Parish Centre Ladies’ League back in November. Instead of accepting their prize, these generous Peachlanders turned around and donated it to another local charity that serves those in need. The same thing happened in West Kelowna, when Nancy Chapman won $5,000 in a raffle organized by a great group of local kids, the 909 Peregrine Air Cadets. A couple of these kids, dressed smartly in uniform, marched up to our house weeks
email editor@peachlandview.com before the draw, and it was impossible to say no to them. They were super polite, super prepared, and very dedicated to their cadet responsibilities, which includes community service. Chapman obviously noticed this, and gave a portion of her winnings back to the cadets, a donation which will allow them to continue to raise money for an upcoming citizen trip. Back in Peachland, Lions Club president Gary Brooks presented a $5,000 cheque to the Peachland food bank, which is no doubt appreciated this time of year, but really, is needed year-round. Speaking of generosity, an additional $618 was thrown in by the Lions, thanks to Peachlanders donating during the Light Up on Dec. 7. Over at TNI, employees matched the company’s donations to both the food bank (two cheques for $500) and the Peachland Wellness Centre (two cheques for $1,000). And the mother of all grip and grins was last Friday at the Legion. Thanks to a year’s worth of meat draw proceeds, approximately $22,000 was divvied up among 26 different groups. How awesome it was to be in a room full of people who choose to spend their time helping others, and to see them receive money that helps them continue to give back. Big contributions like these tend to make the paper, but there are small ones too and they’re no less important. To the Peachlanders who smile at others on the street, who look out for their neighbours and consider them friends, who reach out and commit to making our town better, rather than sit back and complain. These are the types of people any community would want. And we’re lucky to have you all. Merry Christmas, everyone. May the joy of the season translate to renewed focus and happiness for you and yours in the New Year.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Wish list: lower taxes and Water is our Number One sidewalks on every street Dear Editor, I read that Peachland has extra money. Number one should be to reduce our taxes. I would also appreciate sidewalks on every street off Beach Ave. We need more sidewalks than one. We don’t need another baseball diamond, pickleball is not for everyone, tennis is not for everyone, we have Swim Bay for children. We do not need another children’s waterpark! Sidewalks will be used by all ages, and all people – men and women. Please, not another paved parking lot. Sidewalks will enable people to walk downtown Peachland and leave the car at home! -Lucy Anderson, Peachland
Here’s some more info on migration Dear Editor, Further to my letter in last week’s paper - “Do your research before believing migrant rhetoric” Peachland View December 14, 2018. As part of an effort to gain more understanding on the topic of migrants / refugees and how it relates to Canada, I offer the following Canadian sources: • A documentary that recently aired on CBC called In Search of a Perfect World https://www.cbc.ca/documentaries/in-search-of-a-perfect-world. This documentary examines why people choose to walk out of their country. It also shows a Canadian connection that contributes to people walking away from their homes, families and country and • A podcast on Radio Free Winnipeg - the Episode is called “Canada’s role in Central America and the “migrant crisis”. -Frances Trowsse, Peachland
Dear Editor; Water was the number one issue at a pre-election town Hall Meeting. As it should be. We officially have lived Peachland for 40 years now. When I moved here, Peachland was a mining town and my concerns were tailings ponds and water quality. As my children were born and raised here, my concerns were primarily the safety of my children. Now a grandparent, I watch these children purchase water for their children, challenged by spring run-off and boiling water for human consumption, and wonder if the fires will evacuate them this year. I am a Director of a camp on Greata Creek which feeds into Deep Creek and have concerns wearing that hat. Our Camp water is challenged by cattle range, logging truck traffic, ATV use, recreation vehicles ripping through fragile Greata Creek less than 1 km above camp, mining exploration, logging licensees who don’t know what the other is doing, inadequate logging practice in riparian areas. These challenges create a cascading perfect storm for Greata Creek Camp , the creek itself, and me personally. So that is why I take courses in Fire Harm Reduction, Mapping Wetlands, attend meetings about environmental issues, especially if they effect me and my family or our hobby farm and water does that! I am a member of the Peachland Watershed Protection Alliance and attend any education days I can. Water IS number one, for none of us can do without it! Clear, potable water is something worth showing up for! Join a group that does anything about water (there are several in town). Learn what you can, ask informed questions , do what you can do, support those who do. Is water important to you? -Lee Humphries

Community police: More than the white van KRISTEN FRIESEN EDITOR
You’ve seen the white van before, and you may or may not have been speeding. You probably saw the volunteers too, as you were driving by. Community policing has been around a long time in Peachland – almost 25 years, yet many are unaware their work goes beyond getting drivers to slow down. From neighbourhood patrols, to helping people report non-serious property crime and checking up on seniors who are alone, Peachland’s community policing group – about 25 volunteers strong - really are the eyes and ears of the community. And given Peachland won’t be seeing its own RCMP detachment anytime soon, we really do need those extra eyes and ears, says Roy Morgan, the crime prevention coordinator for the Regional District of Central Okanagan. He joined the Peachland volunteers and RCMP members last week, to say thanks and celebrate the season. The gathering also served as a long-delayed grand opening to their renovated headquarters, at 4440 5th St. “I look after three different volunteer groups, and you’re by far the best,” Morgan said to laughter. “In the past two and and a half years I’ve been in my role, it’s been a pleasure to look after and coordinate the programs you provide down here and the time and the hours you put into it, I really appreciate what you all do in the community.” Community policing volunteers are thoroughly trained and also vetted by the RCMP, a process that takes about three or four months. After that, they’re able to go out on patrol. Volunteers cannot - and are discouraged from chasing after the bad guys themselves, but they can record license plates, get vehicle descriptions, and report suspicious activity to the West Kelowna RCMP for follow-up. It’s exactly the kind of work that allows the RCMP to best use its limited resources, says Staff Sgt. Duncan Dixon, of the West Kelowna detachment. “From this side of the bridge to here in Peachland, there might be five or six guys on general duty working. So as a police officer, if I was to send my guys on

patrol, I wouldn’t necessarily send them to a nice neighbourhood in a beautiful area of Peachland, because it’s very unlikely in their limited patrol time, they’ll find something going on. But because of the hours our community policing volunteers are putting in, combined with their knowledge of the area, they’ll know ‘hey this person doesn’t fit here’, and they’ll let us know, and it’s information we can use to determine where we patrol.” The same goes for speeders – if volunteers are noticing a spike in speeders at a certain location, that’s a potential place for the RCMP to set up shop. “Volunteers also talk to their neighbours about community safety,” Dixon says, adding crime is kept in check in Peachland, in large part to the extra visibility of community policing volunteers. Having the van out patrolling creates an image of safety, that someone is out there watching for the bad guys. “I want to say thank you and how proud I am of organizations like this,” says Dixon. “This level of volunteerism I think is almost uncommon these days. But they send that very important message of safety, and sending that message of safety to your fellow citizens is super important. I mean, you all love living here, it’s that much safer than most, and thats’ a credit to yourselves.” Minajean Smith remembers the early days of Peachland’s community policing. They were a group of 50 who were based out of the fire hall and used their own vehicles to patrol town. As the office coordinator, she’s seen the volunteers dwindle over the years, as most of them are retired. “We’d love to see some younger people come out and volunteer,” she says. “A lot of the volunteers are of the age where they’ve had their little do on it and they’re pooped. Let the younger people give it a try, just like everything in this town. You take all the seniors out as volunteers, and there wouldn’t be too much going on.” If you have a few hours to help out on a regular basis, call the office at (250) 7672623, or visit their website for more info www.peachlandcommunitypolicing.ca
Don’t drink and drive, says RCMP Both the Kelowna and West Kelowna RCMP are reminding motorists to stay sober if you’re planning to drive this holiday season. The Kelowna RCMP launched their Counterattack campaign on Dec.1, which will run throughout the month. “Our officers are conducting roadside checks for drivers impaired by both alcohol and drugs,” says Cpl. Jesse O’Donaghey with the Kelowna RCMP. “On our first night out, 12 drivers were taken off the road and issued various driving prohibitions for impaired driving. Everyone should plan ahead for a safe ride home, and if you witness a suspected impaired driver, pull over when safe to do so and call 911.” Police now have the right to ask for a breath sample from any driver they lawfully stop. The new rules are nationwide and went into effect Dec. 18. The legislation, passed in June, the same time as new rules for drug-impaired driving, is aimed at preventing accidents where driver impairment is a factor. Several lawyers say the new law presents legal challenges in terms of warrantless searches without probable cause.

non-profit and charitable groups who each recieved a cheque from our local Legion last week. More than $22,000 was raised through meat draws held throughout the year. What’s a meat draw? Legion president Jean Saul says tickets are sold for $1, and each draw consists of four meat selections. Tickets are randomly drawn from a bucket containing all tickets for that 15 minutes or half hour, depending on the day they draw. Some of the local groups that got cheques were the local food bank, the Wellness Centre, Peachland Elementary PAC and more KRISTEN FRIESEN PHOTO.

Mayor Fortin: A special sign at Christmas The Christmas season with twinkling outdoor lights against a snowy backdrop, seasonal melodies, decorated trees, sugary cookies, and wide-eyed children warms the heart at this time each year. It’s especially poignant for our family this year as our two newest grandchildren gaze at all of it with wonderment for the very first time. Whatever your thoughts, beliefs, and celebrations are at this time, I hope you are able to take in some of the holiday season with joy. It’s not always easy at this time of year. Bills tend to be higher, family may have moved away and aren’t able to visit, or this may be your first Christmas without a beloved family member or friend. I know how difficult that can be. I’ve been there, more than once. I’m so grateful that organizations like the Wellness Centre have a special Christmas dinner for those people who may not otherwise be able to enjoy a good Christmas dinner and warm conversation.
I’d like to share a story from one Christmas several years ago... My mother, 54, had passed away quite suddenly after a brief illness. Her service was on December 15th, right before Christmas. While all I could feel was a heavy sadness that made my heart ache, I had three young children to care for and a memorial service to plan, so I kept on going. I rushed back and forth in the house for a couple days cleaning, organizing, and preparing food for the family gathering that was going to take place at our house after the funeral service. In my head I could not stop thinking about my mother and wondering how she was. Was her spirit happy and peaceful? Was she in heaven like she believed? Are you okay, Mom? I wondered to myself, over and over again. Then on one trip into my bedroom I suddenly felt a poke in my bare toe. It stopped me in my tracks. I
looked down to see a holiday postcard she had sent me a few years earlier. One side was jammed in the carpet, the other side in my big toe. How had it gotten there? I had been in this room numerous times over the last few days and had already vacuumed to every corner, and now suddenly this card was there? So I bent down, picked it up, and turned it over. To my surprise, it read (in my mother’s handwriting): “Having a great time. It’s beautiful here! Love MOM.” To this day I still get shivers thinking about it. It made me feel warmth, love, a great relief, and each year at this time when I think about that moment, and it further instills in me the importance of family, and the determination to carry on the traditions of Christmas my mother had passed onto me. From my family to yours, I wish you the very best for the holiday season and new year!

Happy holidays from trustee Moyra Baxter It’s that time of year again, when we celebrate with families and friends and count our blessings. Here at Central Okanagan Public Schools there were many events which not only celebrated the season but also provided opportunities for students to share their accomplishments and to reach out to their communities.
Throughout the school district, innovative teaching and learning practices are evolving as we embrace the Ministry of Education’s Core Competencies, Communication, Thinking and Personal and Social, along with numeracy and literacy skills. Learning is more exciting, relevant, and interesting, and students are becoming more confident in their own abilities. Teachers are working collaboratively by combining classes when appropriate and having older students work with younger students as mentors. Often classrooms look different than they did only a few years ago, with students sometimes working in groups rather than sitting in rows of desks. The main thing is that teachers and students are much more flexible than in the past and this is leading to students enjoying learning and accomplishing more. The British Columbia Kindergarten to Grade 12 education system has been recognized as one of the best in the world, and we must work to
keep it that way. So, we do have much to celebrate, and at this special time of year the Board of Education wishes everyone “Season’s Greetings” – whether you celebrate Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Dhanu Sankranti, or just Winter, we wish you Happy Holidays and all the best in 2019.

I’m not really a “White Christmas” person. In fact I would prefer that the stuff stayed away all winter like it did in Bermuda where I lived for several years before immigrating to Canada. Christmas in Bermuda was often a time when “expat” families (contract employees mostly from UK, Canada, or the States) would get together with friends and spend two days being pampered in the Southampton Princess Hotel or in some other resort offering a special Christmas deal. It was always a great time for the adults - and for their kids, who would play together happily all day enjoying the sunshine, water sports and supervised entertainment. I know that for many people snow is an essential part of Christmas - something to be welcomed and enjoyed. However, my vote is for it to be banned in Peachland, this year and forever. Nevertheless, if that motion should fail, I will do my best to respect the majority decision - tough though that may be! My best wishes to all for a great Christmas and a Happy New Year. -Keith Fielding

A busy, batty year ahead for BEEPS of White nose syndrome (WNS), the devastating fungus that affects hibernating bats and has decimated millions of colonies within eastern Canada and the United States. A white powder, or fungus, forms on the bat’s muzzle and tips of the wings and ears, causing an irritation that wakes them prematurely during hibernation. Once awakened bats will die from starvation and dehydration due to the lack of food and water. WNS was detected in the Seattle area in 2017 and 2018 but reports indicate it has not invaded north of this region. BEEPS works in partnership with the BC Community Bat Program and requests all winter bat activity be reported to either peachlandbats@gmail.com or okanaganbats@gmail.com For updated information on WNS see www.bcbats.ca Two of BEEPS programs have seen substantial growth in 2018. The new Adopt a Bat certification is a computer generated exchange of information on BC bats and more specifically bats in the Peachland Historic School. All that’s required is to submit a name and gender of the bat to be adopted and an email address to receive information on how your bat is progressing throughout its lifecycle. A bat stuffy, bookmarks and other computer activities are provided with bat adoptions. It’s the perfect gift for creative minds. Growth has also been experienced in the Bat Chat presentations which are interactive educational programs for children of all ages. 2018 Bat Chats were presented at the SPCA Summer Camps in Penticton, West Kelowna Sparks and Brownies and to elementary schools within Kelowna and West Kelowna. Additionally, bi-weekly Chats were facilitated by PeachTree Village is proud to bring investment, employment and shopping summer student Emily Sproule within the Visitor opportunities to Peachland’s Beach Avenue. Breaking ground in March 2019. Centre during July and August. The Spring and Fall continue to be popular times for educators to bring classes to the Visitor Centre to view bat activity in the attic when bats are returning from and departing for hibernation. Due to the increasing popularity of this program BEEPS is seeking volunteers to assist in facilitating Bat Chats. Retired educators who are missing the classroom setting or anyone who enjoys interacting with children on an educational level are invited to join the BEEPS Team. Contact us at peachlandbats@gmail.com or phone 250-767-2455. Also, Peachland Bats became celebrities during International Bat Week, when Global TV’s video journalist, Shay Galor, interviewed BEEPS at the Legends of the Lake Interpretive Centre. This interview sparked Visitor Centre visits by bat enthusiasts from Lake Country to Penticton. BEEPS has also gained notoriety at the provincial level and is currently partnering with the Royal BC Museum in Victoria, Environment Canada, Kelowna Museum and Central Okanagan Regional District Parks to create a Traveling Bat Education Display to be available to educators, museums and interpretive centres province wide. This project is in the preliminary stage and funding sources are currently being researched. Also, Peachland is in the process of becoming the model community for the BC Community Bat Program’s initiative of Bat Friendly Communities. This model will enable communities throughout British Columbia to follow established guidelines that encourage bat habitat preservation, protection and creation, as well as providing and distributing bat education material. On the horizon, 2019 promises to be a year of expansion of BEEPS’ programs and partnerships in the ongoing endeavour to provide current bat information and protect and preserve bat habitat in Peachland. -Darlene Hartford, BEEPS president
The Bat Education and Ecological Protection Society (BEEPS) takes a leading role in monitoring bat sightings and reporting unusual bat activity or dead bats found during the winter months. BC bats are hibernators and should be in a comfortable state of torpor inside caves and rock crevices at this time of year. Bats flying or resting in the open during winter could be an indicator of the presence

Warm Wishes for a Merry Christmas
• Do ignore the dog • Do pet the dog only when the dog gives consent and when the dog is calm • Do pet the dog when YOU give consent • Don’t talk to the dog • Don’t touch the dog. Any attention will only serve to excite an already excited dog or create more fear. If you have a dog that is fearful of people coming into the home, you can tell guests the same thing as you would an excited dog. Keep in mind that just because a dog comes up to sniff doesn’t mean consent to touch the dog. Fearful dogs lack trust in people and feeding them or petting them doesn’t always, if ever, build trust. Just allow the dog to wander, if it’s ok to do so, without people touching them. from the Peachland team Some dogs need help and cannot leave situations on their own so look for typical signs of stress and help your dog: Head low and ears back, tail tucked or carried unusually low, yawning and shaking off We will be closed (as if they are shaking off water-stress release), head Dec 25, 26 & Jan 1 turning away (avoidance). Call them away as opposed to scolding. Remember: Help your dog! Christmas equals stress for some dogs so creating good associations to the changes is very helpful. Always keep checking in to make sure your dog is comfortable and looking like they feel safe and get proactive; set yourSandra and Oliver would like self and your dog up for success by being preto wish everybody pared just in case your a wonderful Christmas and dog needs help this season. Merry Christmas! Happy New Year.
Christmas can be a crazy time; Food, lights, strange and tempting objects hanging from a tree that is not to be peed on and more than the usual amount of humans in the house, (including strangers). From a dog’s perspective, all these changes in the environment can be very scary and upsetting and the result can be a frightened dog performing unwanted behaviour. Change can have an adverse affect on your dog’s emotions. Whether it’s July or December, when your dog is having issues with chaos, you need to help them. Even when you’re not certain what is happening or why, the goal is: How do I help my dog feel safe? The first thing you can do is to advocate for your dog, so you and your guests can relax and enjoy the time together. Provide a quiet spot for your dog to retreat to. If your dog is in the crate or on its bed it’s automatically a ‘no go zone’. Dogs are allowed to rest without intrusion from adults and children and disst turbing them can have unwanted consequences. The quiet zone can be in another room, at the end of a hallway December 22, 2018 or in the farthest area from the commotion. 2 pm - 5 pm Having ‘occupiers’ ready for your dog. Occupiers give your dog something else to do inAppetizers stead of worrying about the environment, AKA Guest Speaker, Terri Knox guests and noise.
