It’s the end of the year, the last paper of the year, and so you’re going to guess what I’m typing next: Words of reflection on the last 12 months, and hopes and thoughts for 2019. It is a year in review issue, is it not? I’m trying to get past this cliché, but alas, it’s 7 a.m. and I have 12 empty pages of layout ahead of me, which need to be uploaded in a few short hours. Our team has been working really hard the last few days. Over the past 48 hours we produced both the Dec. 21 issue and the issue you’re reading right now. The ladies I work with in this house are so good at what they do. They’re upbeat, and that energy is something many of us can thrive off. I love the buzz that comes with working to deadline, but sometimes, it comes at a cost to creativity. Hence, I’m here right now, trying to fill a blank page, with Christmas music in the background (thanks, by the way, to everyone who came by the office this week with treats and good tidings, it’s been a delicious distraction!) Personally, when I look back over the past year, change has been a pretty consistent theme. It’s an obvious one, because as I’ve said before, change is inevitable and how you react is how it’s going to affect you and those around. React with anger, and chances are you’re going to get a defensive or equally angry reaction from those you encounter. React with anger and misinformation, or worse, no information, and others will fill in the blanks for you – you’re creating discord, fear, and more reactions from others who will fill in the blanks for you. You learn nothing. It’s a ripple effect, and it can spread far and wide. But what if your first move isn’t to react? What if the reflex is to find out more information, to ask questions of those you disagree with. That kind of growth mindset can have a much more positive ripple effect – you go from making statements to asking questions, you learn more and you can pass that on to others. Of course, what is “good” information is totally subjective. Everyone has their own opinions, and make no mistake, that’s an essential thing. We have all kinds in Peachland. In the two months I’ve been at the helm here, I’ve learned a lot, and gained a huge appreciation for the people who make Peachland work. I’m also eyeing those who are angry, who feel they have no say. Listening to everyone is obvious for a journalist, and obviously a healthy thing for all of us to do. As far as 2019, I’ve got a few good stories brewing in the back of my mind. As we all know, Peachland is ripe with opinions, projects, and big personalities. Some of these stories are quick and easy, others take time and research. So if there’s something you don’t see in the paper, speak up! I’m either unaware, or it’s something I’m working on. I prefer to take my time on the bigger stories – it does take time to talk to more than one person, to get some context, which means research. The last thing I’m going to do is put something out there, and wait for the reaction. If there are blanks or gaps in infor-
email editor@peachlandview.com mation, that’s when that ripple effect of discord and fear can start. So I have my role to play in ensuring what I put out there is factual, fair and balanced. And if readers disagree, I’m totally fine with that. Opinions and feedback are what make this paper hum along. So I continue to welcome that. Ok, I think my word count has arrived! If you’re off work, continue your holiday enjoyment. If you’re back at it, we hope you had a great Christmas. And to everyone in Peachland: Happy New Year, and we’ll be around for whatever changes are in store in 2019!
HERE’S TO 2019! From the ladies and our gentleman dog at the View.

FOR SENIORS HERE Catering to the fine senior citizens of Peachland Snoring may seem like a pesky yet minor problem, but it can be much more serious than some people know. Although snoring is a common problem among all ages and genders, the National Sleep Foundation says that men are twice as likely to snore as women, and snoring can worsen with age. The aging process can lead to a relaxation of the throat muscles, resulting in snoring. Furthermore, the NSF says anatomical abnormalities of the nose and throat, illness and other factors may also contribute to snoring. Drinking alcohol, which can have an effect similar to muscle relaxants, in the evening can make snoring worse. While many people may think snoring is a mere nuisance, it actually may be a symptom of obstructive sleep apnea. Over time, apnea can be associated with high blood pressure and increased risks of heart attack, stroke or death, advises WebMD. Now there is new evidence that those with obstructive sleep apnea may be at a higher risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease as well. A new study published in the journal Neurology found that people with sleep apnea tended to develop memory problems and other signs of cognitive impairment earlier than people without such sleep disorders. Richard Osorio, MD, a research assistant professor of psychiatry at the NYU Center for Brain Health, found that, among 2,000 people studied, those who reported having sleep apnea or snoring tended to develop signs of mild cognitive impairment, including memory lapses and slower speed on cognitive skills, about 12 years earlier on
average than those who didn’t report any sleep-related breathing issues. Mild cognitive impairment often precedes dementia related to Alzheimer’s disease. Some researchers believe snoring and sleep apnea may contribute to a buildup of the toxic protein in the brain called beta-amyloid, which is a hallmark of Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. If snoring has become problematic, men are urged to visit a doctor or sleep specialist to see which therapies can be instituted to help improve sleep and overall health. INC

Name: Bella Age: 1 Years ID 473124 Dog- Female Black Mouthcur / Pit Bull Terrier
Bella
This sweet girl is a bundle of fun, energy, and love. She loves to be as close to her people as possible! She’s super snuggly and affectionate. Bella needs a guardian who has lots of time to get her out and moving. She isn’t the type of dog to get bored; if her needs aren’t met, she will find something to do (that you might not appreciate!). Bella is currently on anti-anxiety medication, and it has helped to calm her immensely.

PEACHLAND VIEW
GUEST COLUMN
Merry Christmas, from the Van Minsels Patrick and Laura Van Minsel-Decoster moved to the Okanagan Valley in 2011 from Leuven, Belgium. Patrick is a Peachland councillor. We first visited Canada for three months in 2008, our travels took us across the country enjoying the beauty, diversity and friendly people of Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta and BC. When arriving in British Columbia it was in Parksville on Vancouver Island, as we watched the wildlife pass by our door, we knew we’ve found our dream. We looked at each other and said, “We could live here!” As the saying goes, the rest is history. That same year on New Year’s Eve we decided to apply for a Permanent Canadian Resident Visa Card. To better understand where we would like to live we visited Nova Scotia and P.E.I. in September 2009, this area of Canada is lovely and impressive, but the winters would have been too harsh for us. We received our Permanent Resident Visa in August 2010, and we came to BC in October 2011 to decide where to live, we revisited many locations on Vancouver Island, as well as Squamish and Whistler, looking for our long-term home. We had little success in finding what we wanted and then the Okanagan Valley was recommended to us. As we followed Highway 3 to the Okanagan, we knew this is where we wanted to live. For three weeks we travelled between Penticton and Lake Country, passing through Peachland regularly. Each time we’d pull off the highway into Peachland we enjoyed eating on a lakefront patio and walking along the lake. Suddenly it hit us Peachland is the place! A shout out to Loretta Robinson (Visitor Centre Manager) who spoke so passionately about Peachland she convinced us this was the place to settle down. In September 2011, just arrived from Belgium with only a few suitcases and our 2 dogs Pacha and Day, we moved to Peachland and opened a Day’s Dream B&B, named after our Leonberger dog, Day. We also started a wine tour company, Winelicious Tours, as well as, partnering with a Belgian Master Chocolatier in Vancouver, created the company Xocolicious. In 2015 the B&B and wine tour business was sold. As newcomers to Peachland, Laura took care of the B&B and Xocolicious. Patrick became a volunteer for the Peachland Chamber of Commerce. In 2012 Patrick was elected to the Chamber’s Executive Board as Treasurer and in 2014 became Interim-President. In May 2014, Patrick took on the official duties of the Chamber as the Executive Director, and Patrick continues to work in this position. More recently he was elected to serve as a councillor for the District of Peachland. Peachland to us is like a little gem, where friendly people live, and nature is

phenomenal. It still amazes us that we can see deer, bear and other wildlife on a regular basis, we who came from a country were a wild rabbit was considered our wildlife. We met some fantastic people who we now are lucky enough to call our friends. We enjoy walking at the lake, visiting local shops and having lunch or dinner at one of our restaurants. Our advice to all of our fellow Peachlanders would be never to lose your sense of adventure, relish the fact you live in such an awesome country and town and dare to dream big, dreams can come true, ours did. Laura, Patrick, Yeah-Girl (our SPCA dog), Basil and Sybil (cats) wish you a Merry Christmas and a healthy and happy New Year!
