DEAD OR ALIVE? Practical joker Mort McNulty (played by the guy in the coffin, Nick Lloyd) may get more than he bargained for. He’s hosting his own wake, just to see what people say about him. Wouldn’t you be curious? His long-suffering wife, Tricia (played by Tanya Morrison) seems fed up with his antics. Or is she? Find out at Parlour Games, the latest play from the Peachland Little Theatre. Opening night is May 8 and tickets are available at Peachland Pharmacy, or the UPS store in Westbank. See story on Pg. 3. Peachland’s postcard-perfect views are well-known, and if you take a winning shot, your photography could be in a calendar that will showcase our town. The Visitor Centre is having a photo contest, something tourism services coor-

dinator Susan Neill hopes will expose some hidden talent. “I wanted to do a photo contest because visitors are always inquiring about postcards with photos of Peachland. I thought that it would be a wonderful way to encourage amateur and professional photographers to show off this town.” The winners – one in an adult category, and a youth, will each win a $200 cash prize, in addition to their work being featured on the calendar, and on the Visitor Centre’s website. It may also be used in other promotional material. To enter the contest, go to www.destinationpeachland.com, and under ‘Home’ you’ll find an application form and a release form. Fill those out, and send your photo to 2019naturephotographycontest@gmail.com. If you have any questions, call the visitor centre at (250) 767-2455. Deadline for entries is May 30. Winners will be announced on the website. The visitor centre is also looking for volunteers. If you like playing host and letting visitors know what’s what in Peachland, Neill says to visit her at the centre, or give her a call at the above number. “We’re always eager to welcome new volunteers – they’re our ambassadors for the town,” she says.
The World of Wheels takes over the downtown area for the day. There is very little space for parking in this area, as the general public cannot park anywhere along Beach Avenue between the Blind Angler and 8th Street. You can park at or near the Peachland Mall and get a free bus ride to the show area between 11:00 a.m. and 4 p.m. There is also parking available at Doggy Beach, and along Highway 97 and on Beach Avenue from 8th Street all along the rest of Beach Avenue and surrounding streets. You should note that if you’re illegally parked, your vehicle may be ticketed and towed at your expense. All Safe traffic control will be on-site for the duration and local traffic will be directed accordingly.
We hope everyone has a great day and enjoys the car show.
DEADLINE FOR ENTRIES is May 30 for the visitor centre’s photo competition.

GO FISH, HERE: Once again, Shannon Lake Regional Park is where youngsters can learn to fish this weekend, at the grand opening of the annual Go Fish event, hosted by the Peachland Sportsmen’s Association, Freshwater Fisheries Society of BC, the provincial government, and the Summerland Trout Hatchery. Yes, you can also fish anytime off our new pier here in town, but if you’re bringing kids, your odds of catching a fish are a little better. Al Springer of the Peachland Sportsmen’s Society says about 2,000 trout are released into Shannon Lake, and the fishing event starts at 10 a.m. this Sunday May 5. Volunteers will be on site to lend a hand, and the program will run every weekend until Father’s Day. PHOTO COURTESY SAVANNA FERGUSON
Hosting own wakes has hilarious results, says director of Peachland Players’ latest comedic production KRISTEN FRIESEN EDITOR
It’s a very sad scene at this funeral parlour. Here lies Mort McNulty in his coffin, at the ripe old age of 30. But wait – why did a drag queen show up? And why does his wife seem more exasperated than sad? All those questions can be answered, once Parlour Games, the Peachland Players’ latest production, gets underway this coming week. And director Judith L’Abbe says despite the seemingly morbid theme, there’s a promise: “You’re going to laugh,” she says, explaining this play is more comedic farce than funeral. “The nature of this young 30 year-old man is to play practical jokes on people. So he decides to throw himself a wake, so that everybody will say nice things about him, and he gets to hear it all.” Chaos naturally ensues, adds Pelma Land, a longtime actor and first-time producer of the play, which was selected to fit with what Peachlanders seem to like in their local theatre – a good story, laughs, and watching a group of volunteers doing what they love. “It really is like a family, because most, if not all of them have been here for quite some time already,” L’Abbe adds. They’ve had one actor since the age of seven (she’s 16 now), and others who have been with

We hear about it on local Facebook groups, events are planned around cleaning it up, and for pretty much all of us, nothing ruins a beautiful day in in the backcountry like encountering a big pile of garbage. And it’s not just trash, it’s everything – couches and car parts, building materials, and earlier this month, even a washer and dryer was found during a cleanup in the Princeton area. If someone is going to take all that trouble to haul something like that deep into the forest, why not head the other direction and dispose of it properly? It’s maddening. And earlier this week, I had a chance to see some of it for myself. Brady Ives called the View office after someone decided to have a living room-like gathering just off Trepanier Road. A pair of burgundy couches, a TV stand, construction material and other junk was carelessly left by someone out to have what they consider a good time. I haven’t been out past Maxwell Road, so Brady and I each took our trucks, heading under the Connector and driving a few kilometres, passing a couple of No Dumping signs along the way. When we got to the site, it was a pleasant surprise to see the mess gone – an email sent later that afternoon to the RDCO advised me that contractors, responding to a Peachland resident’s complaint to the District, cleaned it up. “By the time our contractor arrived a few days later to tackle the mess, it had all been burnt to the ground, so they took away what they were able,” says Rae Stewart, with the RDCO’s waste reduction office. The land certainly isn’t pristine again by any means – and as it turned out, Brady and I only needed to drive a little further, to a clearing where we found a fresh reason to shake our heads. It’s a spot some locals use as a gun range, and right in front, the remnants of a large fire, still smoking. While Brady went to his truck to grab a shovel to cover the fire pit in dirt, I counted about 20 beer cans littering the area. Handily enough, a plastic bag was also left, and I also happened to have a ton of recycling in my truck (which is where one keeps their recycling when intentions of weekend chores go by the wayside), so in the back it went. That was easy. “When I was a kid, I remember driving to BC and seeing road signs. There was a $1,000 fine for littering,” says Brady. “You don’t see that anymore. I don’t get it. We live in this spectacular, beautiful part of the world and people have the audacity to throw their stuff away here.” Whether you’re a resident or the waste reduction manager for the RDCO, taking people to task for the trash they leave is a never-ending thing. Stewart says illegal dumping within municipal boundaries should be reported locally. If it’s on crown land, you can call the Regional Waste Reduction Office at 250-469-6250 or report online at www.regionaldistrict.com/reportillegaldumping. “We assist the Crown where feasible in removing the offending material, as garbage begets garbage,” she says.
“That said, some dumps are too large in scope for our contractor to tackle solo, then we try to do a larger-scale operation, which is typically volunteer-led and driven.” Volunteers and residents alike have a huge role to play, as they’re the eyes and ears the authorities rely on to prosecute these litterbugs. Within the RDCO, illegal dumping carries a $2,000 fine. It’s extremely difficult to get those eyewitness accounts and the data required to back up a prosecution in court, says Stewart. “Public awareness, environmental stewardship, and informal guardians of the bush have had more traction.” Over at the clearing, the smoke is out, and Brady is heading further up the hill to see what’s what. I had to head back to the office, and as I drove away (recycling clanking around in the back of the truck), I thought it was appropriate to thank those who do the right thing – leave nothing behind, leave it in better shape than how you left it, and report to authorities when possible. Kudos to those Peachlanders who like, Brady, keep an eye out on our wilderness and watershed areas.
BEFORE AND AFTER: This is what an area off Trepanier looked like last week, and below, what it looks like now. It’s an area that’s had its fair share of illegal dumping.

It’s that yellow water time of year, and this Peachlander is sick of it
SAFE TO CROSS? This Peachlander thinks it’s time for the town to install temporary speed bumps on Beach Ave.
Sounding off on speeding
and so-called fake news Dear Editor, Recently there have been two articles in local newspapers (the Westside Weekly and the Daily Courier) titled “Slower traffic may increase noise on Beach Ave.” I have no idea where fake news is coming from but how dumb do they think Peachlanders are? This misinformation is somehow based on a report by the Community Police volunteers. No offence to the volunteers but their results are incredibly corrupt. We have seen this group in action. They set up on Beach Avenue where people can see them a mile away, then they put their equipment out on the road and they position a
volunteer out on the road. Of course, people slow down – no big surprise! If Peachland were to set up a radar system that legitimately captures the speeds of drivers on Beach Avenue you would get entirely different results. The idea that speed bumps or speed humps increase noise is totally ludicrous! Again, I have to ask how dumb do they think Peachlanders are? It is time for Peachland to install permanent or temporary speed bumps on Beach Avenue before the town is responsible for someone being hit by a speeding vehicle. -Theresa C Miller, Peachland

Dear Editor, Yellowish water: Yum, did that make you think of BC water? Probably not. British Columbia has 1/3 of the world’s drinking water. That is a staggering and amazing fact. However not many places in Canada have boil water notices EVERY spring. Although we apparently received a grant to do a new water treatment processing plant four years ago, we still have yellowish water in our, toilets, sinks, tubs and washers, which are all hard to clean due to this terrible water. The District of Peachland engineer told me that the work was starting last November 2018. Not sure why they would bother to lie to me, when the contract was just announced being awarded this year. Doesn’t instil a lot of trust. My question to our mayor and district staff, who are supposed to look
after us happy Peachlanders is “Do you not feel that the residents of Peachland deserve good drinking water?” I was not born here, I choose to live here. And every one of my friends and family are jealous of how lucky we are. It is an enviable location to live, (however those that have visited in spring are appalled at the yellowish water we have). How do our seniors carry potable bottled water home? Do they boil? Or are they sick like two of my neighbours. I’m afraid this cute little Peachland has a nasty little secret that has gone on for far too long. If you agree please, please let our leader Miss Cindy know how fed up we feel about her tardy actions. Who hauls her water? Hoping others will speak up, -Chris Sailer, Peachland

NEWS REPAIRS ON WATER:
Peachlanders have been pausing on their walks along Beach Ave lately, as work continues on fixing damage from the floods of 2017. Here, contractors are doing some prep work before replacing one of five blue docks that need to be dealt with along the waterfront. Work is also ongoing on the day use wharf, and all this construction is expected to wrap up around the May long weekend. District of Peachland staff have been working with a recovery director, who is responsible for helping the district recoup costs from the various provincial and federal assistance programs to help pay for all this work. Funds for the rip rap - or removal and arrangement of the giant rocks that were placed during the flood, are part of a different, multi-year project that will eventually help get Peachland’s waterfront back to where it was before the flood. Hard to believe that was two years ago already! KRISTEN FRIESEN PHOTO

It’s an Okanagan gardener’s dilemma: Plant all the things and pay for it in water consumption, or take a new tactic, by selecting more drought-tolerant plants. You can bring a variety of water-friendly plants home this weekend, by attending the Summerland Ornamental Gardens annual spring plant sale. It’s a major fundraiser for the Friends of the Gardens Society, which is a non-profit volunteer group formed in 1991 to preserve and maintain the 15 acre historical garden. “The society runs only on memberships, donations and fundraisers to stay alive and through this funding hires two seasonal gardeners and depends on a host of dedicated volunteers to achieve its mandate,” says the society’s Kathryn McCourt. A variety of annuals, perennials, vegetables, tomatoes and herbs have been grown in greenhouses on site and there will be new inventory available on the second day of the sale. McCourt is also hosting a workshop called Okanagan Gardening for Newcomers from 1-3 pm Saturday and Sunday. For more information contact friends.summerlandgardens@gmail.com

DID YOU KNOW? At 10 a.m. on the last Saturday of April, all over the world, groups gather to practice Tai Chi? These Peachlanders bundled up April 27 to practice as a group. It’s an ancient Chinese exercise that strengthens body and mind through a series of slow, graceful movements and deep breathing techniques. Here’s a quick tip from the World Tai Chi Day website: Take a deep breath, and when you let that breath out, let every cell in your body let go, letting your shoulders relax down and away from your neck. Two more nice full breaths, and on that sighing exhale as every cell lets go right at the deepest roots of your being, let the morning mantra flow through your lungs, throat and mouth, “EGBOK, EGBOK, EEEEEGGGBBOOOOOOKKK.” -PHOTO COURTESY DARLENE ROMANKO / KEIKO HIEBERT

BUSINESS PROFILE
Harbour your light at a wellness centre made for everyone Just off Beach Ave, there’s a new house. It’s white, and striking in its overall simplicity. Walk inside, and one is immediately awed. Look up, and you’ll see a unique angular, yet domed skylight. The heated tiles you’re standing on (the pattern!) are imported from Spain. Fresh flowers are everywhere, and you’re greeted with a genuine, welcoming smile. This is Harbour House, a place that’s not just a yoga and meditation studio – it’s an experience and one that owner Yvette Moore sees as a place of personal growth and well-being. “This is a place where people can come in, slow down, and have the opportunity to check within. People feel really safe here,” she says explaining she’s always felt drawn to lighthouses. “They’re so symbolic in helping us navigate our way through rough waters. Nothing else speaks of safety and security in the face of adversity and challenge quite the way a lighthouse does, and that’s very reminiscent of Harbour House.” This place is the culmination of years’ worth of vision and hard work, says Moore, a Peachlander whose passion is firmly rooted in this community. And whether you’re here for an early morning vinyasa flow, or an evening help-you-sleep yin yoga class, this is a shala where truly, everyone is welcomed and embraced. And you don’t need to be worried about knowing all the yoga terms just mentioned, says Jen Clute, Harbour House’s manager. This isn’t a place reserved solely for hardbodies who’ve been practicing for years. Harbour House really is for everyone. Whether you’re 17 or 70, male or female, even kids are welcome here (watch for details on summer day camps coming soon). Even if you don’t have an interest in yoga, the House welcomes anyone who craves a retreat from the everyday. “Sometimes the yoga lifestyle can be a little intimidating, and we really want to take that away,” Clute says.
“We don’t want people to be afraid to come by here. You can come with a book and sit by the garden or the pond. Or, you can sit on the rooftop patio and look out over the lake.” There’s a small library of spirituality-centered books, a self-serve tea station, and comfortable nooks and spaces to zen out, recenter, and learn. That’s essentially what a shala is, says Moore. “It’s a place where people can still come and do asanas, but it’s also a gathering place to come and learn and share education and knowledge together. It encompasses a lot more than just a place to practice yoga. We prefer to be considered a mindfulness centre – a place where people can come and slow down and have the opportunity to check within.”
The studio officially opens Friday, May 17, with an open house, followed by classes and a pop-up shop on Saturday (see details below). Mornings and afternoons are reserved for yoga classes, with the middle of the day reserved for special events. There’s big plans for this space – from philosophy discussions, to workshops, full and new moon ceremonies, intimate musical performances, art creation, kids’ yoga and day camps, Harbour House is going to be a hub in our community, and one that echoes the best parts of living and visiting Peachland. “I was born and raised in the Okanagan Valley, and I’m extremely passionate about this community,” says Moore, adding word of mouth has really spread over the past few weeks, from the special events and classes that are already happening, to creating relationships with other local businesses and service groups. They’re hosting the Peachland Ambassadors for a self-care workshop, they’re working with local companies like the ZipZone, creating tourism opportunities (think morning yoga, followed by a thrilling zip adventure), and they just hosted a unique Chamber of Commerce event. “The Chamber puts on their Business Made Social event, and we decided to make it a Business Made Social Media. We shared our knowledge about social media, about using hashtags, and really, working as a community to use our social media together to bring people out to our community, whether it’s for the day, or for a vacation. It’s something that helps all of us.” Already, the buzz has been positive and very welcoming. “We really are here for the community,” Moore says. “And yes, we are a destination town. So, I think it’s important we come together to create an atmosphere and vibe in our community and work together. I’m extremely passionate about Peachland and the potential here.”

This week’s Sudoku Solutions in next week’s paper!
Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve!

Boys and Girls Club has kids covered for summer fun Now that the sunshine and warmer weather is finally here, anticipation for summer begins and staff at the Okanagan Boys and Girls Club in Peachland have begun planning for exciting summer programs! Looking for fun activities for your child over Summer? We’ve got you covered! Throughout July and August we will be offering a variety of programs for children and teens. Full day summer camps for
Club Member of the Month! Alana has been attending Recreation programs at the Okanagan Boys and Girls Club – Peachland since September 2017 after moving to the community. At the Club she is able to take part in new activities and make new friends. Alana’s demeanor may initially be quiet, but friends quickly get to see her kind nature and silly sense of humor and she gets along with everyone! At the Club she likes to participate in Dinner Night on Wednesdays. She is a great help in the kitchen, has learned many skills and enjoys almost everything we cook. After dinner she loves playing King’s Court or Hide & Go Seek with the group. It is always great having Alana’s calm, cool, and friendly demeanor around the Club and we are proud to name her our Member of the Month!
children ages 6-12 start July 2nd and run through to August 30th. Each week will consist of theme based activities including games, art projects, and out trips throughout the Okanagan. Summer Science Lab, Messy Madness, and Crazy Cool Competitions are just a few of the exciting themes we have planned! Contact the Club for registration information and packages. For families who are not looking for full day programs, we will also have many recreation activities through the summer including afternoons at Swim Bay, Workshop Wednesdays, and Adventure Trips. After the success of our Kid Food Nation program last fall, we will offer this again throughout the summer where kids can come to the Club, and make lunch together before spending the afternoon swimming in the lake at Swim Bay. Detailed activity calendars will be available in June. New this Summer will be Blue Jays Rookie League Baseball for kids currently in Grades 1-6. Jays Care Foundation, in partnership with Boys and Girls Clubs of Canada, offers this fun baseball program for children who might not otherwise have the opportunity to participate in recreational or organized sports. Rookie League is a program that uses the game of baseball as a foundation to teach children the importance of teamwork, cooperation, and self-esteem. All equipment will be provided and since spaces are limited, registration is required. This program is also being offered at other Okanagan Boys and Girls Club locations and will wrap up August 26th with a Club wide tournament and barbeque. For more information on any of our great programs, please contact us at 250-767-2515, peachland@obgc.ca, or stop by the Peachland Club at 5684 Beach Avenue. Activity calendars are available on Facebook – Okanagan Boys and Girls Clubs Peachland – or can be picked up from the Club where you can stop in anytime for a tour of our Centre and meet our great staff!

Kathryn Virginia
Jul 16, 1952 - Apr 19, 2019
Kathryn Virginia Moase, age 66, passed away peacefully in her home in Peachland on April 19, 2019 after a courageous battle with cancer. Kathryn was born July 16, 1952 in Liverpool, England to George and Marian Box. From a young age, Kathryn developed a great love for animals and critters of all kinds. Growing up with a father in the air force, Kathryn enjoyed many adventures and emigrated from England to Canada in 1958, settling in Ontario in 1967. Kathryn loved her green ’67 Mustang fastback and after graduating from Thornhill Secondary she enjoyed her job at a large firm. Kathryn met her one true love, Terry Moase, during a dance at the local Richmond Hill Tavern in Ontario. Terry liked blondes and asked Kathryn to dance. Kathryn told her friend that night she would marry Terry and the two were wed April 29, 1972 in Thornhill, Ontario. Terry and Kathryn had two sons, Brandon and Clinton, and moved to Peachland from Ontario in 1980. While moving from the big city was a big adjustment for Kathryn, she grew to love the small town of Peachland and made many close friends. Kathryn loved her horses, gardening, collecting and feeding stray animals of all kinds and spending time with her grandchildren. Kathryn is remembered by her loving husband Terry of 47 years, their two sons Brandon (Janice) and Clint (Cindy), and four grandchildren Taylor, Jenna, Ethan and Hayden. Kathryn is also remembered by her father George, brother Graham as well as her sister-in-law Shelley Quesnelle. Kathryn will also be remembered by her close girlfriends and neighbours. Kathryn was predeceased by her mother Marian and brother-in-law Rick. Special thanks to Dr. Verster, Shirley and staff as well as the Interior Health Palliative Care Team, and the West Kelowna London Drugs pharmacy staff. No service at Kathryn’s request.

Getting rid of all that stuff: Wellness Centre has solutions It may seem that our country is not getting saturated with plastic and garbage, however, consumerism is sending tons of stuff to landfills, thanks to the unnecessary purchases we all do daily. Zero Waste is a philosophy that encourages the redesign of resource life cycles so that all products are reused. The goal is for no trash to be sent to landfills, incinerators, or the ocean. The process recommended is one similar to the way that resources are reused in nature. Not only that, zero waste could reduce your monthly expenses. At the Peachland Wellness Centre, we currently implement some of these practices and we encourage you to go zero waste at home.
At PWC we:
• receive gently used books and small items to sell in our boutique, • promote composting in our Community Garden beds, • use the internet (emails) to decrease the use of paper through letters, and • receive donated cans and bottles (please leave them under the deck, our back door).
America’s landfills. Some retailers have launched sustainability campaigns and set up in-store bins for recycling old items, but it’s no solution to the endless onslaught of throw-away clothes, the real solution is not to buy so much. Be a conscious consumer. Try to buy second hand. Try to buy things in the store without unnecessary packaging. Try to buy food from local farmers. Try to buy food in bulk without packaging (check out this blog, at www.goingzerowaste.com). Try to avoid plastic. Think about the before life and the afterlife of each product you bring into your life. How did it get to you and where is it going after you’re through with it. With being a little more aware of your purchases and phasing out single-use products, you’ll reduce your waste by almost 80%!
What can I do if I have stuff that I don’t need but it’s in good shape? .... or if I am in need of a used item?

Ideas for use at home:
• Buy products from local farms/vendors avoiding plastic wraps/containers, • Phase out single use product by using cloth napkins, real plates and cutlery, • DIY (Do It Yourself) cleaning and beauty products, • Multitasker products: You don’t need something for each individual task, • Avoid consumption of one-time use drink/water plastic bottles or recycle them after. Last week, Castanet posted that “more than one million beverage containers go “missing” every day in B.C., they don’t get recycled, meaning they could end up in lakes, streams, the ocean or simply be left as litter in the environment”. Some numbers: according to CBC’s Marketplace latest investigation clothes thrown away account for a huge amount of waste in garbage dumps. Canadians on average purchase 70 new articles of clothing a year and that contributes to the 12 million tons a year of textile waste dumped into North

Watershed group says we need
a better plan for Peachland “One of the most important acts you can do as a community is to prioritize source water protection in your official community plan” stated hydrogeological engineer Bryer Manwell at the recent Securing Our Water forum, organized by volunteers with the Peachland Watershed Protection Alliance. In her presentation, Manwell, a consultant in hydrogeology and water resource management, said that the best way to secure a water source is to limit development and not allow water to become contaminated in the first place. “Peachland hasn’t as yet fully identified potential impacts, or quantified actual impacts, to its water source in the Peachland and Trepanier watersheds.” Peachland does not have a source water protection plan, only a watershed assessment for drinking water source protection produced in 2010 by consultants Golder Associates. This assessment outlines 23 natural and manmade risks to the watershed. Of the 19 recommendations from Golder Associates, Peachland has only completed seven. Manwell emphasized that to have clean water, it is important for the dis-

trict to have off-site monitoring of the creeks as a requirement for land-users such as forestry or mining companies. While land-users monitor their own onsite activities, she suggested that they should broaden their monitoring to include what happens elsewhere in the watershed as a result of their activities. “Monitoring results should be assessed over time and then land-users need to present that data to the community, in an accessible way.” The district is currently constructing a water treatment plant, but it will not protect the water source and the water will require chemical treatment. Manwell suggested several solutions to improve Peachland’s water quality, including restricting land use in the watershed, as well as identifying conservation lakes that have no human impact. Another suggestion is to manage outfall into creeks and streams with constructed wetlands along with permeable reactive barriers (a barrier that passively captures and removes contaminants, releasing clean water). In Vancouver and Victoria, it’s illegal to trespass in community watersheds. Peachland’s community watershed used to be protected by government but it is now open to industrial activities.
