“With Tim Hortons, we’re able to give back on a whole other scale.” Greg, Restaurant Owner from Cowichan Valley, BC Greg retired from a 17-year career in the NHL but knew he needed to keep busy, finding new ways to give back. So, he and his wife opened the first Tim Hortons in the small town they grew up in. Already heavily involved with community events of his own through his years as a professional athlete, Greg’s transition to the world of Tim Hortons was a seamless one. Now with the support of a national brand, his and his wife’s contributions have been taken to the next level. Hwy 97 resurfacing expected to finish at the end of September VIEW STAFF The province invested $1.7 million to make Highway 97 smoother and safer through Peachland. DON’T MOVE A MUSCLE – Boaters entering the waters of Okanagan Lake through the Peachland ramps were being reminded to be proactive about the spread of invasive muscle species. Creek Bridge, just south of Peachland, to Glenrosa Road in West Kelowna. It’s expected to be completed by the end of September. The Ministry reminds motorists to slow down in work zones, obey all traffic control devices, and check drivebc.ca for updates. Peachland resident Patricia Ryder believes the highway requires much more substantial upgrades than the ones underway. She said the resurfacing is just “lipstick on a pig.”

Revisiting the 3 Pigs OKANAGAN REGIONAL LIBRARY VIEW STAFF Forget Made-in-China junk – the province is encouraging citizens to buy their goods from here in British Columbia. With the Peachland Farmers and Crafters Market running every Sunday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., politicians are giving a plug to local products. “Fairs and exhibitions are putting B.C. on display this summer, to connect British Columbians to all the products being grown, raised, processed and produced in our province,” said Lana Popham, Minister of Agriculture. “By using the hashtag #BuyBC, people can proudly show the world, through the power of social media, the diverse and unique products coming from B.C., and connect them to the people who make our agricultural industry sector so amazing.” The Peachland market could win some big cash if it gets enough support from enthusiastic shoppers. Anybody who shares their photos with the #BuyBC hashtag will be entered into a contest. There has been $25,000 spent on the social media contest, and the local fair with the most creative Buy BC campaign will be awarded a cash prize in October. “Supporting local farmers and agricultural businesses around the province is at the heart of what we do as an association, and we’re pleased to partner with the Ministry of Agriculture to bring the Buy BC message to thousands of fair attendees this year,” said Tom Harter, president, BC Association of Agricultural Fairs and Exhibitions. “As more consumers become better connected to where their food comes from, this campaign will be a great platform to educate fairgoers on the important role agriculture plays in almost everything that goes on the dinner table.”

Although they had no immediate leads, the Kelowna RCMP IFIS (Integrated Forensic Identification Services) will be doing some tests. “Forensic investigators have seized the bullet, since recovered from the woman’s vehicle, for examination, as they look for clues to hopefully help them identify the person who may be behind this reckless incident,” said RCMP Cpl. Along with 5 other concerned citizens, I attended the June 26 council meeting where Coun. Terry Condon moved, and Coun. Pam Cunningham seconded “THAT Council direct staff to prepare a text amendment to zoning bylaw no 2100 Part 7 C-2 core Commercial zone to limit building height on Beach avenue frontage on properties located between Beach Avenue, Waldo Way, Princeton Avenue, and Sixth street to three storeys or 13 m whichever is less.” (Our former planning director Ms. Gain said this was not about restricting height on rezoning from current residential) Councillor Keith Thom specifically asked and was answered by our CAO Ms. Elsie Lemke that they were not actually voting to restrict heights on Beach Avenue but were just agreeing to talk about it at the next meeting. So then last week Council votes this down, to restrict height for C2 zoning on Beach Avenue. Couns. Vucinovic and Condon were the only Councillors to vote against the new OCP and for the height restrictions. Mayor Cindy Fortin and Couns. Schierbeck, Kent, Thom and Cunningham all voted for the new mealy mouth language OCP and against height restrictions. On what planet would Coun. Pam Cunningham second a motion and Thom sing the blues to confirm a

motion they never had any intention of honestly considering? This was obvious window dressing to distract from the fact that the new Official Community Plan also passed on June 26, has had all mention of height restriction removed. Indeed it was Ms. Gain who had suggested this two stage OCP and zoning amendment at the June 26 meeting. It is also to be noted that the morning Committee of the Whole meeting cancelled all of the discussion around the new OCP and height restriction zoning and it was not discussed at all. I was at both meetings. To make matters worse, the Official Synopsis of meeting minutes published in the View made a big deal of the passing of the OCP and that there was instruction to administration to prepare the height restriction zoning change on C2 zoning on Beach Avenue. The next meeting synopsis made no mention at all that the Council had voted against any height restriction on Beach. It certainly seems to be an odd turn of events for the Council. Or perhaps it is not odd at all, but just par for the course for this Council and administration. It is at best a poor attempt at muddying the waters and at worst, an outrage to our taxpayers. It needs to be asked at this

time: Who is leading the Council here? Is it Council? Is it Administration? It sure as heck isn’t concerned Peachlander’s who are being ignored. There were no spoken supporters of the new OCP at either the public input meeting nor at the Council meetings. It begs the questions: Why not? Where are they? We now have two out of town developers wanting to build on Beach Avenue higher than allowed by the old OCP. The second of these wants to build four storey’s with a fifth storey for the elevator, and to build close to the sidewalk. All this for Beach Ave close to 11th Street. Unless Peachlander’s do something about this, say… VOTE…..AND demand that before we allow any more re-zoning, developers who already have proper zoning start to build out what they are allowed or sell to someone who will build. After all, we have 4500 housing units already approved in this District. We are about to witness the construction of the Great Wall of Peachland—a line of four to six storey, shoulder to shoulder buildings on Beach Avenue. Anyone who thinks differently has been heavily self medicating…..and probably still is. Lloyd Sotas Peachland

Grade 5 is good enough but five storeys is too much Why was there profound outrage over the height of a building and then near silence when our local school was further reduced down to Grade 5? The only school in town has been chronically shrinking for the past generation and some people think Peachland’s future is bleak because of a five storey building near the lake. When young families are looking for a new place to call home, I wonder what’s more important to them – educational offerings for their kids, or strict adherence to an Official Community Plan. Peachland is already an afterthought to the trustees at School District 23, and since there’s no political will to protect local education, taking Grade 6 away from Peachland would have been a low-hanging fruit to them. The school board must think of Peachlanders as a passive bunch that won’t cause any friction after getting the short end of the stick. But I doubt developers see Peachlanders as a passive bunch. Given the amount of money that’s come here to die, along with the professional reputations that have been raked over the coals – there might be some apprehension when it comes to investing in Peachland. Nevertheless there’s more than enough reasons

to want to build here (beyond the high demand for housing in the region). We live on a lake in the mountains; service clubs and volunteer groups are very active and effective; nearby trails are amazing; and downtown is as vibrant as ever. Also, with the new speculation tax that just came in, we’re the closest community to Kelowna that wasn’t hit by it, which created a stronger incentive for the most affluent to buy property in Peachland. Yet despite all the appeal to live in Peachland, high rises are not proliferating along Beach Avenue. And there’s increasing doubts about whether PeachTree Village is even going to break ground. If it doesn’t end up going ahead, the Friends of Beach Avenue will be able to claim victory. And maybe they will have made Peachland a better place for it. But while all that time and money went towards stopping a building from being high, 15 per cent of local education got outsourced to West Kelowna. The same amount of energy that went into stopping PeachTree could have been spent on protecting PSE. But now we’ll be paying the same amount in school taxes for less local education. OPINION

Proud of experiences as a coach Dear editor: (Part 2 of last week’s long response to Derek Bunce) Mr. Bunce took a shot at my recent post on Peachland Neighbours Facebook page at the end of the recently concluded kids soccer season. As mentioned in the post, I have a background in youth soccer. I played until 60, coached youth soccer for 23 years, was president of the 2nd largest youth soccer club in Vancouver for six years and on the Board of Directors for Vancouver Youth Soccer for five years. Upon moving to Peachland three years ago I asked the community center if we could offer an introduction to soccer program for four to six-year-old Peachland boys and girls. The Community Center was, and continues to be, extremely supportive. So, for the past two years, with the help of like minded Peachland residents, we have run a Mini Kickers introduction to soccer program each quarter in the Community Center that over 80 young Peachland four to six year old kids have now attended. A total of 26 more are regis-

tered for the upcoming two summer sessions. Kids can play league soccer in the Okanagan from April until the end of June starting at the age of six. Registration starts in January. With another Peachland resident, we entered and coached a Peachland team of twelve six-year-old Peachland boys starting out in soccer in the Westside (West Kelowna) soccer association this past spring. Most had previously gone to the mini kickers program as with our and five year olds. With the numbers of four and five year old kids attending the mini kickers sessions in the Community Center now we should be able to field both a girls soccer team and a boys soccer team of six year old Peachland kids next season to join what will then be the seven year old Peachland boys soccer team. With this soccer season just over June 24 and the team pictures just handed out I posted the picture of the Peachland kids soccer team we’d coached on Peachland Neighbours June 26 and informed folks there were opportunities for more young Peachland kids to learn soccer and play to-

gether on Peachland kids soccer teams next season if we can get a few Peachland parents/grandparents out to help coach. Mr Bunce feels this was somehow politically motivated. Again, not true. I’ve coached and/or played soccer for most of my life. I also coached baseball (T-ball, little league and softball) for six years when my own children were growing up and this fall will also be teaching an “intro to t-ball/baseball” for three to six old kids at the Peachland Community Center. I do believe though that giving Peachland kids opportunities to play together on Peachland community youth teams will do a lot more to help the community than ramming unwanted high rises for the rich onto Beach Avenue will. If you can help a kid learn a sport you should get up and do it and if you think your government is not listening, you should also get up and do something about it. Simple as that, Mr Bunce; no political aspirations here. Randey Brophy Peachland

Jeers to the Peachland View for publishing an editorial cartoon (June 22, 2018 “Trump’s Legacy”) depicting children in cages shown by the mainstream media on TV (also known as the biggest brain washing tool in history). Those images were actually taken from the Obama era. Whereas the children currently displaced in Florida are actually being placed in air-conditioned, comfortable, clean surroundings and are given good food, provided with all the comforts that children would love like video games, jungle gyms, etc. I am disgusted that our hometown newspaper would print something so vile....shame on you! Get your facts straight!!

Hope the five members of council are proud Dear editor:

After reading the story in last week’s View about council rejecting a three storey building limit along Beach Avenue despite advice to the contrary from staff, it makes me wonder – how bloody minded is this council? Or how influenced have they been by the potential benefits of going against the general consensus. I am so saddened by the inevitable destruction of this beautiful community I have called home

for 30 years, fueled by greed and a pipe dream that somehow investors are going to be fighting each other over three blocks of Beach ave . I can only assume that promises have already been made, I can pretty much guess to whom. Three stories on Beach does not prevent five, six, seven or more behind town lane with a commitment from developers for a multi story car park included, and some realistic affordable accommodation for

a sustainable downtown community. This council has let the residents down very badly. The tax dollars gleaned from a couple

of developments on Beach won’t amount to a hill of beans when the reason tourists and visitors come to Peachland has gone forever.

I hope the five of you are proud of the legacy you leave behind. Maggie Brooks Peachland

PEACHLAND RESIDENTS’ ASSOCIATION Did you know – that an OCP is the single most important planning document a city must have to define and ensure orderly long-term planning and development. Did you know – that by arbitrarily re-writing the OCP our City Council has established a nasty precedent that will make it difficult to enforce any limits on any building structures along Beach Avenue, or elsewhere in the city. Did you know that to abandon the proposal to adopt an amendment to the zoning by-law to limit building heights on Beach avenue was just one more demonstration of contempt for the rights of the citizens of Peachland Did you know – that without any enforceable plans to define how a city grows and develop is an open invitation for rampant development..

Outright thievery Dear editor:

The managers of the Peachland A&W bring in four or five copies of the Province every day for patrons to read with their coffee etc. I look forward to reading the newspaper every time I patronise their business. It may seem like a small thing but I can’t help but curse every time I open

the paper to the comics/crossword/puzzle pages to find half of these pages missing. This ‘Outright Thievery’ is an annoyance to not only myself but to every patron who looks forward to the paper. Are newspapers that expensive that people have to steal parts of them? Bob Mulvihill Peachland

Surrounded by wildfires

VIEW STAFF Between Vernon and Kaleden there were 15 active wildfires at press deadline. Three of which were right here in Peachland. Windy conditions on Wednesday seem to have intensified the fires, and the one near Antler’s Beach got too close for comfort, as motorists along Highway 97 were being turned back beginning late in the afternoon. Along Beach Avenue, locals and tourists went about their leisurely summer activities while three of the fires could be seen burning in the landscape.

PEACHLAND COMMUNITY ARTS COUNCIL Passion4Art is proud to announce their Second Annual Art Show & Sale. It will be held in the 50 Plus Centre this Saturday, July 21 and Sunday July 22 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. Admission is Free! It was felt that there was less likelihood of really bad weather in July – unlike their inaugural show last November when Mother Nature threw a monster winter snow storm a month early! Passion4Art is a collective of very eclectic artists who meet at the 50 plus Centre each Friday under the guidance of Roberta Farrelly. Some of the artists are beginners having just started painting and others more experienced have dabbled for years. Their work covers a wide range of subjects and styles - realism, impressionism, abstract and everything in between! A range of assorted mediums will be exhibited, including watercolour, acrylic, mixed medium, alcohol ink and even sculpture. Passion4Art meets on Fridays as a class in a social setting. They love their art and enjoy spending time with people of like mind. Most are retired or semi-retired and it is wonderful to be able to share a Passion4Art. Wander over to see their work and perhaps have your picture captured with the Okanagan’s very own Town Crier. This week in the Peachland 1898 Little Schoolhouse on Brandon Lane, Wayne Power and Mary Walker will be highly active. Wayne will be in constant “teaching mode” with drop-in workshops in acrylics, watercolour, mark-

ing pens, you name it. Mary has many projects to display and loves teaching her quilling techniques to all ages. The programme is open Thursday to Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The full summer schedule is available on the same webpage. Sunday Tea and local fruit desserts in season will be served on the patio from 1 to4 p.m. every Sunday in July and August with artists in attendance. You should also be aware that coming up shortly this mid-August is Opera Kelowna’s popular annual showcase production. This year it is Georges Bizet’s Carmen at the Kelowna Community Theatre from Aug. 16 to 19 at 7:30 p.m. The opera was first performed at the Opéra-Comique in Paris on 3 March 1875, where its breaking of conventions shocked and scandalized its first audiences. Tickets can be purchased from our website link. Carmen is set in southern Spain and tells the story of the downfall of Don José, a naïve soldier who is seduced by the wiles of the fiery gypsy Carmen. José abandons his childhood sweetheart and deserts from his military duties, yet loses Carmen’s love to the glamorous matador Escamillo, after which José kills her in a jealous rage. The depictions of proletarian life, immorality, and lawlessness, and the tragic death of the main character on stage, broke new ground in French opera and were highly controversial. You can preview a trailer of perhaps one of the more famous arias, “L’amour est un oiseau rebelle”, sung by the Metropolitan Opera Company HERE. Opera Kelowna has built a solid reputation in the Okanagan and you’re in for a highly entertaining evening of musical magic. Carry on enjoying summer!

Cash for Critteraid Summerland Legion generously dotated a $500 cheque to help the Critteraid fundraiser that is for the emergency rescue of 50 beautiful cats and kittens that were desperate for help. They were found in a Kaleden home, after a man living there was raising a few cats. None of them were spayed or neutered, so before long, there were 50 cats. The Summerland Legion’s donation will assist with the costs of spaying, neutering and rehoming the cats.

Wellness Centre into the summer schedule PEACHLAND WELLNESS CENTRE Here’s what you’ve missed at the Peachland Wellness Centre! The return of the summer months means a return to the PWC’s summer schedule. We still offer a few programs & services including Ladies Coffee & Cards, and Meditation and Transportation. Our hours of operation and Services remain the same (9-3). PWC has been busy with community events, our annual Spring Wrap-up Garden Party and Peachland’s Canada Day celebrations. PWC participated in the annual Canada Day celebration to showcase both what we provide to the community and our pride in being Canadian. This was PWC’s 17th consecutive year of participating in Peachland’s Canada Day festivities. Our volunteers marched in the parade on foot, scooters, bikes etc. carrying signs highlighting all the programs & services, to enhance public awareness about what we do. With 90 attendees, PWC hosted the Spring Wrap-up Garden Party in the beautiful community gardens. Guests included: Our Member of Parliament, Dan Albas; Mayor, Cindy Fortin; Councillors Keith Thom and Pam Cunningham; Funders; PWC members; volunteers; participants and friends to celebrate PWC’s evolution. We are proud to share some of our developments from last year, including: A new PWC logo, reconfiguration of facilities following the flooding, partnerships with community organizations including 50+ and the Boys and Girls Club, involvement in the application process for Residences on 6th, a new website and our very first ‘End of Summer Gala’ fundraiser which will feature 7 musical acts! We were able to thank our funders and donors and volunteers at the Garden Party for giving their time and expertise. Without your support, we would not be!!! For more information about what’s happening at PWC visit peachlandwellnesscentre.ca

PINCUSHION QUILT GUILD in Peachland had a Sewing Bee to make pillow cases for the Kelowna Hospice House last month. With the help, supervision and guidance of Joan Gibson the guild completed 55 beautiful and colourful pillowcases. Some members measured and cut, some pinned and sewed and others pressed. At the end of a fun and special day this mission was complete. Pictured above, on July 6, 2018, are Helen Dick, a former member of the guild (who is now a volunteer at the Hospice House) and Dianne Weeks, on behalf of the guild, presenting the pillow cases to Carmen Cocarell of the Hospice House.
