Long before I lived in the Okanagan, the little town of Peachland (on the shores of Okanagan Lake) had captured my imagination. From the comfort of my Burnaby BC home, I dreamed with longing of the day I would become a Peachlander. Although I haven’t made that happen, I am now close enough to visit regularly and spontaneously. Peachland is situated on 11 km of lakefront, midway between Penticton and Kelowna. I have now moved from the coast to the interior and Peachland is near enough to my Lake Country address to be a daytrip destination. Given a succession of glorious autumn days, and a case of writer’s block, I packed up my laptop and hit the road. In under an hour, I made it from my front door to the eastern end of Peachland’s Beach Avenue. My first stop was Todd’s RV & Camping. In 1956, the Todd family opened their three-acre Okanagan lakeshore family home to campers, and 62 years later, Todd’s continues to welcome visitors to the area. Ten years ago, our family was among their guests. Our first summer camping there and subsequent summer visits created many of my favourite vacation memories – including playing card games and walking to a local restaurant on the south end of Beach Avenue to purchase double scoop ice cream cones. Starting at 13 St., Beach Avenue in Peachland is dotted with charming little curio shops, pubs, and small, independently owned eateries. Bliss Bakery has a location on the corner of Beach and 13th. After experiencing Bliss, I found myself next door, drooling inside a marvelous gift and decor store. The instant I walked inside, the curiosities and odds and ends of items and paintings were calling my name. In that same grouping of shops, there were two clothing stores, a realtor’s office, and a spa. Heading south on Beach Avenue, my daytrip included stopping along the way to step outside and snap pictures of the resplendent Autumn-dressed trees lining the lakeshore. Clusters of people in sweaters and vests – bundled against the chill of a breeze blowing inland off Okanagan Lake and occasionally accompanied by canine companions – travelled the thirteen block waterfront walkway. The path is named Centennial Way in honour of Peachland’s 100 year anniversary: 1909 - 2009. Beach Avenue is also home to the well known Gasthaus on the Lake Pub and Restaurant, which is where I stopped for lunch. Once sitting, I looked up and found the coolest chandelier ever (made from empty wine bottles) shining down on me. I ordered the beef goulash and emptied my bowl in a span of minutes,

with my taste buds begging for more. I spent a fairly extensive time at both the Peachland Art Gallery and at the Peachland Museum. Both are free to the public. That day, the Art Gallery had an exhibit of paintings from Kelowna area artists, and I talked with a former history teacher about the building the gallery is housed in and its relationship to the Okanagan’s protected bat population. She was really knowledgeable and the information I learned about bats and BEEPS (Bat Education and Ecological Protection Society) was intriguing. See page 8-9 for more information about Peachland’s bats and the Bat House Interpretive Trail. At the museum, I snapped photos of artifacts from an earlier time in Peachland’s history. With every picture I took, my mind was at work spinning the beginnings of future historical novels. I wondered... what might it have been like to be a miner/railroad engineer/logger back in the day, or to ride the SS Sicamous – the steam-wheeler which is now a museum in Penticton. Wondering is step one in novel-making. Looping my way off the main avenue of the town, I pulled in to Peachland’s mall, visible from the Highway, and parked in front of Bosley’s pet store. Having previously managed a Bosley’s location myself, I knew Cam, who owns the Peachland store. He wasn’t there that day, so I chatted briefly with his wife and learned that the store is doing well. By 2 pm, I was ready to call it a day. As I walked from place to place, that good, fresh autumn air of Peachland had turned my cheeks pink and my nose even pinker. Every experience I had was positive, from the amazing beauty of the lake to the friendliness of the residents and the uniqueness of the local venues and businesses. I headed home with a smile on my face that reached right to my heart. As I shifted into drive, I left both Peachland and my writer’s block fading out my rearview window.

New exhibitions showcasing both local and distant artists are featured on a monthly basis. It is primarily volunteer staffed and prides itself on offering diverse exhibitions that engage, challenge and inform its audience. With an annual visitor count of over 11,000 visitors, it has become one of the go-to galleries in the Okanagan. Every spring, the gallery boasts the largest and longest running fine art photography exhibition in the Okanagan, Captured Images – featuring a number of award winning photographers. Each July, the gallery hosts Oasis, an initiative of the Central Okanagan chapter of the Canadian Federation Artists, a nationally juried show that attracts artists throughout BC and western Canada. August houses Artists in Studio which engages five new artists every week for the entire month, displaying and working in the gallery. The Bats of Peachland
PEACHLAND HISTORIC SCHOOL
P
eachland is known for many things; its pristine beauty, diverse wildlife habitats and year-round family fun, but did you know that it’s also home to one of the largest maternity bat colonies in British Columbia? The attic of the Peachland Historic Schoolhouse has served as a cozy roost to a colony of almost 2,000 Yuma Myotis and Little Brown bats which expanded to the Bat Education and Ecological Protection Society, now fondly referred to as BEEPS.
BEEPS
BEEPS provides several educational programs for Peachland locals, visitors and bat enthusiasts about positive cohabitation, the economical and environmental advantages of bats in the ecosystem and the elements that put their existence at risk.
Adopt a Bat
To learn additional information about bat preservation and protection, experience our Bat House Interpretive Trail; an easy five km trail throughout Peachland displaying nine interpretive signs. To learn more about the trail go to page 9.
Our newest program allows you to connect with the bats year-round while supporting the growth of BEEPS and our initiatives. With your adoption, you’ll receive an official adoption certificate, receive a special gift and bat facts including a species profile. You’ll also receive updates throughout the year about where your bat is in its life cycle and how it survives throughout the year. Adoptions are a miniumum $25 donation; it’s the perfect, unique gift while supporting a worthwhile cause!
Bat Counts
Beeps Membership
Summertime in Peachland and the livin’ is easy. Visitors and locals alike gather at dusk outside the Peachland Historic School to see one of the coolest sights to be seen in Peachland – our beloved nocturnal mammals foraging throughout the night. Bats can eat up to ¾ of their body weight in insects each night with pesky mosquitoes as being their diet of choice. Help our team keep track of our maternity colony numbers by joining the official BC Bat Counts, Fridays at dusk in June, July and August.
Bat Chats
Interactive education is fun and an important key to encouraging bat habitat preservation. Our Bat Chats are presented in-house at the Legends of the Lake Interpretive Centre, Wednesdays and Saturdays, 10:30 am and 2:30 pm during July and August. Travelling Bat Chats are also available for school groups and other organizations throughout the year. Learn about bats and their environmental impact, their life cycle, predators and how their diet makes our downtown core virtually mosquito free!
What better way to stay in touch with all things batty than signing up for a BEEPS membership. Get batty with us and subscribe to an annual membership. Memberships are available for $10 a year or $25 for three years. Your contribution supports the development and maintenance of our educational and scientific programs in the Legends of the Lake Interpretive Centre. Corporate sponsorships are also available; you can find a four-tier program on our website at www.beepspeachland.com. Your support is gratefully appreciated; the Peachland Bats thank you!

ACTIVITIES & ATTRACTIONS
Welcome to the 100th Annual Peachland Fall Fair.
The first Peachland Fall Fair was held in 1919 and, with thanks to the many dedicated community volunteers and sponsors, the event is celebrating its centennial this year! Nestled in the Okanagan Valley is Peachland – along one of the most scenic routes of Highway 97. Peachland Fall Fair is always a big event that takes a lot of organizing. Without the help of dedicated volunteers, this event would not be possible. Thank you to all the volunteers for donating countless hours to ensure the success of the annual Peachland Fall Fair.
Whether you sew it, grow it, bake it or make it, we want to celebrate it!
Now in existence for 100 years, the Peachland Fall Fair continues to strive to expand its annual event in the community. It is our mission to encourage an awareness of local agriculture by holding an annual fair. Located high up on Princeton Mountain, this new trail offers stunning views of the lake and of the gorges that lay behind the mountain. The Gladstone loop is roughly 7 km long with a 300 m elevation gain, and an optional extension of 1km to see a rare 400-year-old pine. The trail also takes you near an old mine site. Park safely on the side of the road at the trailhead, which is marked with a blue and white hiker symbol, as well as other Regional District markers. (If you get to the orchards, you’ve gone too far!) Remember to sign the Fur Brigade Guestbook, located 1km up the trail.)

This trail was used by fur traders in centuries past to transport their pelts from Northern BC to the Columbia River. The currently opened section of this historic trail extends from the South end of Peachland to Summerland with the always epic Antlers Saddle Lookout. The Peachland section of this linear park rises for about 4 km to the Peachland summit, with a 300m elevation gain. It is wide, well-maintained and wellmarked, but there can be occasional loose gravel. It is a great pet-friendly family hike that offers panoramic views of the lake from Kelowna to Naramata. In addition, it goes through the site of the Mount Eneas fire of August 2018; hikers can witness first hand the ravages

The trail head for Stairway to Heaven is off a cul de sac on Victoria St. and starts with a heart pounding 158 stairs, then a 1.5 km hike that is generally flat. There are many great viewpoints along this short hike. It's a great hike to get back in touch with nature when time is an issue.

Park area from main entrance to Hwy 97 is open. Main trail to waterfall viewpoint is closed due to flood damage. Hardy Falls Regional Park, named after Harry Hardy who was one of the first orchardists on the Westside, is a six hectare park located at the south end of Peachland. The flat walking trail follows the pristine Deep Creek leading to a picturesque waterfall. The shaded park is ideal in the hot summer months and is great for wildlife viewing – especially when Kokanee salmon return to spawn in the fall. The trailhead is located on Hwy 97 S in Peachland at Hardy Street. Turn off the highway on Hardy Street and travel along to the parking lot.

Did you know… September in the Okanagan brings spawning Kokanee salmon. Scores of landlocked Kokanee will travel upstream, returning by force of nature to their place of birth to lay eggs. During the spawning season, male and female salmon turn red, making them extremely visible in Deep Creek at Hardy Falls. 20

Trepanier Creek Regional Park covers 4.35 hectares, and is situated between the Okanagan Connector and Okanagan Lake in Peachland. It offers park visitors a natural forest trail bordering the canyon of Trepanier Creek. Hiking and biking the trail system is the most popular activity within the park. Ensure you have appropriate clothing, footwear and equipment for activities on the trails. It also features activities for the whole family including birding, wildlife viewing and botany. Visitors will be able to explore through the Ponderosa Pine/Douglas Fir forest, meander about grasslands with rocky outcroppings and see visible remnants of the Trepanier Creek Dam. Pincushion Mountain Trail is probably the most well-known hike in Peachland. Visitors from across the globe have taken their obligatory selfies and photos on the mountain’s majestic summit. The hike begins with stairs, carries on with switchbacks and has several steep sections, so proper footwear and even walking sticks are highly recommended but there are three main look out points that allow you to rest before the summit. These lookouts offer a brief glimpse into the highly anticipated panoramic views from the top; you might even see some deer, a garter snake or grouse. Upon reaching the summit, bask in the views, but don’t 22

ACTIVITIES & ATTRACTIONS
The trail in spring can be hard to see if there is patchy snow still on the ground. In winter and spring, the trail will be slippery. In summer when the trail is dry the gravel is slippery. Be careful. The trail is well travelled and there are trail markers... either bits of pink ribbon or old red signs high up on trees. Stay on trail as much as possible. Be observant. It's a totally worthwhile trek!
Bedford & Spring Lake Trails to
Travel time is approximately two hours round trip. It is a 2.5 km trek to the old hunting shelter; visitors will return the same way.
Hiking or ski poles are recommended and would be useful for this trail through Peachland’s winter wonderland.

The Bedford Trails are named after Wes Bedford, Peachland’s long-term resident and local pharmacist. Wes’s Trail is located approximately 1.5 km up the road from the Silver Lake driveway and is the perfect trail for snowshoeing. The trail head is marked with an orange sign that reads “Wes’s Trail.” As you begin your trek, the trail will exit the bush at the powerline. From there you will go right, walk up and over the little hill. There you’ll see the trail continuing down to the left. The trail will ascend with a series of switchbacks and is well marked with pink ribbon and some T’s painted on trees. Beginner hikers and snowshoers will be able to navigate easily.

Wilson Lake–Ski & Snowshoe Trails
to CROWNLAND
The Wilson Lakes snowshoe and cross-country ski trails are part of the valuable bank of natural resources Peachland can proudly promote. These trails were popular during the late 1960s and early 1970s when the Peachland Ski Club existed. Today the trails are still maintained by a few and being explored and rediscovered by a growing number. Signage is now at the trailhead of the Wilson Lakes loop. There is a 37 km trail system. Each trail head and junction is marked with colour-coded directional signs according to the ability required to ski it. These are wilderness 24
trails, not groomed trails like Telemark or Nordic. Know your physical abilities before heading out. The Wilson Lake Loop is a 5 km beginner trail and Wilson Silver Trail is 8 km long and rated intermediate. The trails are also shared with those choosing to snowshoe. Signage indicates trail courtesy and etiquette rules for snowshoeing and skiers, as well as safety tips. Be prepared for a wilderness experience with knap-
sack, water bottle, snack, and layered clothing. There are no amenities, equipment rentals, refreshments or cell phone access. To reach the trail, turn up Princeton Avenue from Hwy 97 in Peachland and follow the road beyond where it turns to gravel. At the fork go right following the signs to Silver Lake Camp. Pass the turn off to Silver Lake. At 1.5 km past the Silver Lake driveway is the entrance to Wes's Trail to Wilson Mountain. Drive further, about another 3.5 to 4 km to the Trailhead for Wilson Lake loops. Trail signage is at the trailhead, and not visible from the road, so watch for cars parked on the right hand side or watch for a clearing where power lines are visible. Walk in and cross the power line clearing to the trailhead.

2019 OFFICIAL VISITOR GUIDE for PEACHLAND BC
Todd’s Tent Town: Established 1956
Todd’s has grown from a note pad by the phone for taking reservations, to having business lines, email and a computerized camp reservation system. Our camping season now runs from March to November, booking over 11,000 camper nights each year. Over the years we have had wonderful, friendly staff to serve our guests. In the 1980’s, Graham and Kelly Todd stepped in to relieve Jean and Jeff. Renovations and improvements were made to accommodate the growing RV clientele. Later we changed our name to Todd’s RV & Camping.
ACCOMMODATIONS
In the Spring of 1956 Jean and Jeff Todd opened their hearts and land to create a campground for travelers, friends and families to make memories. Many visitors to Todd’s later became residents of Peachland.
The Todd family has enjoyed watching camper families grow from generation to generation as well as develop new friendships with people from around the world. Jean and Jeff would be proud to see Todd’s is still the magical place where love blooms, children play, multiple generations holiday together, and where friendships and marriages are still being made. Todd’s truly is, “Where you really wanna be...” Thank you campers from near and far, from first time adventurers to returning old hands for making Todd’s your vacation destination.
