MURDER TRIAL: Victim Jonny Binns ‘posed no threat’ to pair in car
‘Just f****** run him over’ By Staff Reporters TWO Dewsbury men have gone on trial accused of the murder of Jonathan Binns outside a Thornhill pub. Mr Binns was run over when he left the Scarborough Hotel following a fight between a group of men in the car park of the pub last February. Jaelan Herlt and Khaleem Harris have both denied charges of murder and violent disorder, and Harris also pleaded not guilty to possession of an offensive weapon. Herlt, 20, allegedly drove his Ford Fiesta deliberately into Mr Binns with passenger Harris, also 20, encouraging him: “Just f****** run him over.” A Bradford Crown Court jury was presented with CCTV footage on Tuesday, showing the Fiesta avoiding a woman but turning sharply left into Mr Binns. The jury also heard that witnesses claimed Herlt said words to the effect of “you’d better move or someone is getting run over” before crashing into him. CCTV footage showed Mr
Binns buying drinks at the bar and minding his own business while the violence erupted outside the premises. Pub regular Mr Binns, 32, who lived on Ings Crescent in Thornhill was a dedicated Leeds Utd fan and had worked at Dewsbury-based Dust Control Systems in Shaw Cross Business Park for more than 12 years. Jury prosecutor Nicholas Lumley QC said that Mr Binns “posed no meaningful threat” as he walked outside towards
the car with his hands held out. The Fiesta was abandoned down a dead-end road moments after the incident. Herlt, of Derwent Road, Hanging Heaton, then allegedly sent messages to his girlfriend saying he had “done something bad”. In one message he said he thought he had killed someone, claiming he rammed into some people because they racially abused him.
