£100,000 DRUG DUO ARE JAILED

By Staff Reporters TWO DEWSBURY men have been jailed for eight years for their part in smuggling almost £100,000 worth of heroin from Afghanistan.

Arfan Hussain and Akmal Afzal were involved in delivering a package – containing 1.94kg of heroin – to an address in Dewsbury Moor.

That amount of heroin would be worth £97,000 if sold in normal street deals, Leeds Crown Court heard.

The parcel, which supposedly only contained children’s clothes and handbags, was intercepted in Coventry on August 9, 2013.

When it was opened at a parcel hub, it did have both clothing and bags but also the Class A drug.

The package was resealed and an undercover officer delivered it to the address on Moorcroft Drive. While there was nobody

there at the time the parcel was delivered, subsequent arrangements were made and both Hussain and Afzal were at the

address to collect it on August 15.

The pair then took the package to an address on Pilgrim Crescent, Dewsbury, before they

were arrested.

The court heard that a third man known as Zahoor was involved in the conspiracy but has not been traced.

Jonathan Turner, representing 26-year-old Afzal, said that he had been persuaded to take part for a small amount of money.

He knew that drugs were involved but not to the extent they were.

Both men had spent time on bail and had kept out of trouble for the past four years.

Afzal, of Church Lane, Dewsbury Moor, and Hussain, 31, of West Street, Savile Town, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to evade importation restrictions.

Judge Mushtaq Khokhar said: “Courts are particularly concerned about the spread of Class A drugs in their community.”

They were jailed for eight years each after they appeared in court.

DEWSBURY: A mobile cancer support service is coming to the town centre next week.

On Wednesday November 15 Macmillan Cancer Support will be manning a bus in Market Place for anyone who needs help or information.

Whether you are living with cancer or know someone who has it, the mobile service is open to everyone. A team of cancer information specialists will be on hand to answer questions, give advice and inform people about local cancer services and support.

The bus will be in Market Place from 10am-4pm.

Staying healthy NORTH KIRKLEES: The district’s health bosses are supporting a nationwide campaign to help keep people healthy this winter.

The Stay Well This Winter campaign has been launched by NHS England and Public Health England to help the over 65s and people with longterm conditions prepare for winter.

Dancing to the Max in aid of Kirkwood FUNDRAISER Max Lemon is lacing up his dancing shoes for a follow-up event to celebrate the success of his dance extravaganza.

A ‘50s-80s Danceathon Olympics’ was held at The Venue in Birstall last month and Max – real name Peter Morgan – will be boogieing his way back for a “celebration knees up” later this month.

The follow-up is to help raise even more money for Kirkwood Hospice, where his late wife Jacqueline was cared for, before dying from cancer in October 2014. Peter has pledged to raise £100,000 in

Doreen Kenny was presented with the medal by Her Majesty at a ceremony at Buckingham Palace on Tuesday.

Her late husband was stabbed after he intervened when Thomas Mair murdered Batley & Spen MP Jo Cox on June 16 last year.

Local pair arrested over double Leeds shootings TWO MEN from Batley and Dewsbury have been released on conditional bail after being arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.

They were among a group of six men arrested in Leeds and Bradford by armed officers last Tuesday as part of an investigation into a shooting in Beeston on Saturday October 28.

That firearms incident is believed to be linked to the shooting of a man in the same area on Wednesday October 11.

Five of the men were given conditions that include not associating with each other, living at specified addresses and observing a curfew between 9pm and 7am.

The sixth man, aged 25 and from Leeds, was also bailed but was taken to Bradford County Court over a breach of an existing gang injunction on him. He was sentenced to 21 days in prison.

Following Mrs Cox’s death, over 80,000 people signed an online petition calling for Mr Kenny – who shared a birthday with Mrs Cox – to be awarded the George Cross for his bravery.

The 79-year-old died of cancer in August, just two months after he was honoured for his actions.

The George Cross is the highest gallantry award for civilians and recognises bravery in both peacetime and war.

In 1973 Mr Kenny also helped rescue miners from Lofthouse Colliery following a catastrophic flood.

Thomas Mair was handed a whole life sentence for the murder of Jo Cox and was also found guilty of causing grievous bodily harm to Mr Kenny and possession of a gun and dagger.

MIRFIELD: The town’s former council offices are being put up for sale by Kirklees Council. The building, on Huddersfield Road, was shut down in 2016 following a dispute over damp and a faulty boiler.

The premises have become an eyesore and the town council has moved elsewhere and decided not to take it on themselves.

The building is being put on the market by Bramleys estate agents with a view to selling by the end of the year.

A spokesman said: “Kirklees Council has received notice that the Mirfield Town Council has withdrawn from the asset transfer process. The council is currently considering alternative forms of disposal.”

Railway service DEWSBURY: The West Yorkshire Veterans Breakfast Club are holding a short act of Remembrance tomorrow (Saturday) at Dewsbury Railway Station.

News In Brief Kirklees sells land NORTH KIRKLEES: A greenfield site could be up for auction next week, alongside a host of plots across the district.

Kenmore Field, just off Kenmore Drive in Cleckheaton, has been owned by Kirklees Council for the past two decades with a decision pending on plans to build 55 homes.

The current planning application was deferred at a recent planning meeting but the green space could be up for sale at a guide price of £1.25m at next Thursday’s auction at the Ainley Top Cedar Court Hotel.

Also for sale is Field House on Wellington Street, Dewsbury and a commercial property at 13 Commercial Street in Batley.

The auction is run by Walker Singleton and will take place on November 16 from 7pm.

Jail for drunk driver HECKMONDWIKE: A man who crashed into a wall while four-and-a-half times over the drink-drive limit has been sent to prison.

Michael Heaton had drunk a full bottle of vodka in 10 minutes before getting behind the wheel of his Peugeot Partner van on October 11.

The 50-year-old was driving along Jeremy Lane when he mounted a grass verge and ploughed into a wall, Kirklees Magistrates’ Court heard. A witness had to intervene and moved the vehicle to a safe place.

Heaton had 159 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath – the legal limit is 35. Heaton, of Hipperholme, was jailed for 14 weeks and banned for 37 months.

Addict stole coffee RAVENSTHORPE: A heroin addict from Ravensthorpe pleaded guilty to stealing five jars of coffee worth £20 from Lidl in Heckmondwike on October 14.

Magistrates heard that 35-year-old Jay Gair, of Clarkson Street, had been diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia and a personality disorder. They ordered a full probation report before sentencing on November 13.

AN OBSTACLE course with a difference has helped raise nearly £28,000 for Kirkwood Hospice since its inception four years ago. The T3 Farm Challenge has become a staple in the diary of local competitors who face hay bales, muddy trenches, ice-cold water and slides as part of a rural run.

This year’s event at Still House Farm in Howden Clough boosted the total by raising £4,313.29 for Kirkwood Hospice. The event, which included an alternative course for younger entrants and finished with an after party, also raised £1,286.40 for the Yorkshire Down Syndrome Group.

So far it has raised a huge £27,793.73 towards patient care at the hospice.

“The T3 Farm Challenge creates an exciting event for the local community, bringing people together to raise money for a worthy cause – like Kirkwood Hospice,” said the event organisers who are pictured left … James Ashton, Katie Ellis, Sarah Brooks and Danny Thomas.

Mill’s place in history

By Zoe Shackleton THE HISTORY of a mill in Batley has been celebrated with the unveiling of a blue plaque.

As part of Batley History Group’s ambition to install new plaques across the town they revealed the first one at Blakeridge Mill this week.

The sprawling mill site, now a residential development, lies on Blakeridge Lane and was originally developed back in the 1820s by Thomas Taylor, later joined in the business by his sons James, Thomas and John.

The firm, then called JT & J Taylor Ltd, became the biggest woollen mill in the town, employing 2,000 people in its heyday.

As well as Blakeridge’s historical importance, its future is also mentioned

on the plaque. Developer Richard Binks took over the premises in 2004 and is close to completing a marathon construction project which will eventually boast 370 apartments as well as a gym and swimming pool.

“This is so important to us to make this happen,” said Mr Binks. “We’re

very proud of what’s happening. It’s going to kick start other investors into the town.

“I have an affinity with Batley, and we want that inward investment and to put Batley right on the map. There could be up to 800 people living here and spending money in Batley.”

The group has investigated various aspects of the town’s past for several months, with committee member Peter Connor heading a team to produce the impressive plaques.

And chairman Malcolm Haigh said: “This is a special occasion for me and the history group because we’ve talked about high-

lighting the history of Batley for quite some time and there’s quite a lot of history in Batley to highlight!

“It’s been absolutely marvellous that we’ve got such support from different sections of society.”

The next plaque is to be at Batley Central Methodist Church.

THE WALK-IN centre at Dewsbury & District Hospital has improved, according to health bosses.

The Care Quality Commission (CQC) rated the service “good” following its inspection in October, just six months after they had visited and found it “requires improvement”.

Inspectors said that the team had tackled, or were on the way to resolving, all the issues that were raised on the previous visit and that all areas of the inspection, including safety and leader-

ship, were now good.

Based in the A&E department at Dewsbury Hospital, the walk-in service provides fast access to local NHS services, information and treatment without needing an appointment.

The report stated that care provider Locala had implemented a system to ensure that all appropriate checks were carried out and that steps had been taken to reduce risks to patients.

It also said that managers had implemented new guidance for the treatment of

children.

Locala provides NHS community healthcare services to more than 400,000 people across Kirklees, Calderdale and Bradford.

Sword-man’s roof fall A SWORD-WIELDING man was taken to hospital with serious injuries after plunging 20 feet from a rooftop.

He had been brandishing the weapon outside his expartner’s home on Malham Drive in Batley last Saturday evening when the woman called police.

Armed officers arrived and he climbed on to the roof of a mill in Healey Lane and started shouting his former partner’s name before falling to the ground.

By Staff Reporters A DEWSBURY teenager drank bleach after being attacked by her father who had accused her of becoming “too westernised”.

The 17-year-old had been wearing make-up and failed to ask permission before going to the gym when her father, who cannot be

The Stuart Stage School pupils will now be training with some of the country’s best young dancers.

Eight-year-old Edward Rushfirth, from Dewsbury, has won a spot on the Royal Ballet School’s junior associate programme. Fellow dancers Elaina Varazinskis, 11, from Heckmondwike, Madeleine Grogan, 13, from Mirfield and Scholes-based Pollyanna Featherstone, 14, have been on the junior programme since they were eight and have now been offered further training on the mid and senior courses.

The three girls have also been offered places on the Northern Ballet programme alongside 11year-old Bailey Cook and 12year-old Layla Jones, both from Heckmondwike.

The youngsters have been attending Stuart Stage School since they were three years old, and will all continue to do classes there.

Principal Jill Stuart said: “We are extremely proud of Edward and the girls. It is a wonderful opportunity for them to train with these prestigious schools and

wardrobe.

Prosecutor Vanessa Jones said: “The complainant gave a statement and was visited by the (Kirklees Council) safeguarding team.

“She said she felt that her father didn’t like the fact that she was becoming too westernised and that there had been previous violence.”

The father, 49, pleaded guilty to an offence of assault by beating.

He admitted that there had been an incident at their home the day before and he had confiscated his daughter’s phone, but she then took her mum’s phone.

Mrs Jones said: “She was dressed up, wearing make-up and going to the gym. Her father said that she should be asking whether she could go out rather than saying she was going out.”

The teenager told magistrates that she wanted to mend her relationship with her father and did not want criminal proceedings to go against him.

He was sentenced to a nine-month community order with up to 15 days of rehabilitation activities. He will also have to pay £85 in costs and an £85 victim surcharge.

DEWSBURY: A public hearing over an application to build 149 homes in Dewsbury is to be held next week.

Persimmon Homes have lodged an appeal after their plan to build the houses on land off Rumble Road was refused.

Council officials and a government inspector will open the meeting at 10am on November 15 at Dewsbury Town Hall.

The meeting is open to any interested party and, at the inspector’s discretion, the public may be able to give views.

Old care home blaze DEWSBURY: Firefighters spent two-and-ahalf hours putting out a blaze at a former care home. The fire at the old Sunnyside Care Home on Oxford Road caused significant damage after it started on the ground floor.

It broke out shortly after 9pm on Sunday and fire crews also found mattresses in the building – suggesting people had been sleeping there – but nobody was found inside.

It is not yet known what caused the fire.

Abuse man warned RAVENSTHORPE: A man who breached his bail conditions has been arrested.

Royston Wooley had been banned from contacting a woman he hurled abuse at last Saturday in Greenhead Park, Huddersfield.

Kirklees Magistrates’ Court heard that the 41-year-old again verbally abused the victim before throwing a bottle at her.

Woolley, of Huddersfield Road, admitted approaching the woman but denies throwing the bottle. He faces trial in February.

District Judge Michael Fanning released Woolley on the same bail conditions as before, but warned he could face jail if he breached them again.

Maybe that’s why I never got a job there – because the Lockwood household isn’t self-sufficient in solar and wind energy (although in fairness I could probably come close after a few pints and a chicken madras).

Those Paradise Paper exposés, that lazy character assassination, is far easier than taking the time and trouble to explain international finance, investment, the way global money works.

That’s too complicated, boring. Far easier to try to get ordinary Joes in a green-eyed lather by accusing posh and rich folk of preventing a cure for cancer and leaving their grans to die on a hospital trolley, while funding their own inter-planetary palaces for when they’ve choked planet Earth to death.

I can’t wait until Jeremy Corbyn’s had 12 months of turning the UK into a mirrorimage of his Venezuelan utopia. That’ll give folk something to properly bleat about.

Mind you, as dumb as the level of public conversation is, Jezza and his Marxist mate John McDonnell, will probably get away with blaming it all on the rich.

I hope self-proclaimed Saint Julie pockets a decent wedge every time she rents herself out to these donkeys.

It’s getting a bit old though, proclaiming that she won’t rest until she gets the truth out of her old slag of a mate Matthews.

Julie love. A word. Nobody died – this was a happy ending, if you’d forgotten. You make it sound like she kidnapped and buried alive one of your own. As for getting an answer out of Karen – good luck with that. She made up so many stories she probably hasn’t a clue what the actual truth was.

My money remains on her planning to leave her pervert boyfriend for his uncle Mick Donovan – taking Shannon – and whether she simply forgot or lost her bottle, when someone raised the alarm and the post-Madeleine McCann media circus showed up on the doorstep, she was stuck in a lie. It was a lie she clung onto just too long, and which she was too thick to work a way out of.

The jail time she and Donovan got was entirely justified – not for kidnapping Shannon – but for the grief, time and money she cost other people.

frenzy of guilt-by-accusation adheres to no such code.

Did he pat a bum? Blow a kiss or wolf whistle? Send a suggestive text? Doesn’t quite deserve the death sentence does it? But don’t expect any of the principals in this quite unbelievable horror show to display anything but crocodile tears of sympathy to his family, or for the mad rush to settle old scores – imaginary or otherwise – to abate any time soon.

Oakwell appeal for public votes A NEW play area could be built in a Birstall park.

The Friends of Oakwell Hall group have applied for an Aviva Community Fund grant to help fund the ‘Adventurous Oakwell’s Landscape Adventure’ project.

The new play area would use natural materials to encourage people to climb, jump, balance and explore in and amongst hills, mounds, paths, valleys and tunnels and would be free to use.

It’s intended to appeal to people of all ages.

The group need public votes in order to win a grant of £10,000.

Each member of the public gets 10 votes to cast for worthy projects and can register on the Aviva website.

Coun Graham Turner, cabinet member for resources, said: “I wish the Friends group every success with this bid, if we win it will not only help us to provide a new fun way to keep fit and active in the park, but also allow us to try out some of our ideas for adventurous play areas in line with the current draft play strategy.”

Voting is open until November 21 at aviva.co.uk/good-thinking/community-fund.

Town crash injured pedestrian

A MAN was taken to hospital with serious leg injuries after a crash in Dewsbury town centre.

A black Honda Jazz and Vauxhall Corsa crashed at the junction of Union Street and Bond Street just before 1.30pm on Tuesday.

It is thought the impact caused the Honda to veer onto the pavement hitting a pedestrian and forcing him into railings. Passers-by helped until the emergency services arrived.

It is believed Yorkshire Air Ambulance airlifted the

injured man to Leeds General Infirmary. The car occupants were not injured.

A police spokesman said the man suffered serious but non-life threatening injuries and was taken to hospital.

News In Brief Benefit of the doubt DEWSBURY: A woman accused of benefit fraud has denied any wrongdoing.

Hannah Bradley, of King Edward Street, has been accused of claiming over £3,000 in benefits that she was not entitled to.

The alleged offences happened over a year between August 2015 and 2016, when she is accused of failing to tell Kirklees Council and the DWP that she was working.

The 29-year-old denied four charges of dishonestly failing to notify a change of circumstances likely to affect her entitlement to a benefit, claiming that she was working for Kirklees and the authority should have known.

Her trial will take place at Kirklees Magistrates’ Court.

Robbers threatened Co-op staff with knife

By Staff Reporters TWO MASKED men threatened staff members at a Co-op store and escaped with cash, stamps and cigarettes.

The suspects used a knife and a hammer to demand cash from the

staff at the store on Bradford Road in Birkenshaw before fleeing the scene.

Staff members – a man and two women – had closed the store before the robbers entered at around 11pm.

Police are now appeal-

ing for information.

One of the males is described as very skinny, wearing a balaclava and a military-style camouflage jacket with a logo on the left sleeve and blue skinny jeans.

The other was wearing a black hoodie with the

hood up as well as a black coat, light grey Adidas jogging bottoms and grey Adidas trainers.

But think of all we’d have lost had Guy Fawkes and his gang succeeded.

Whether or not the accusations/revelations are true or false or exaggerated doesn’t alter the fact that it’s good to watch the political correctness these hypocrites in parliament have forced on the rest of us being the cause of their own downfall.

24 hours on Turnsteads From: Name and address supplied I recently visited a relative on the Turnsteads Estate in Cleckheaton.

This was my first visit to the area since 2012. I must say, I am stunned at the dramatic deterioration of Turnsteads since I was last there.

Has some kind of feral community been installed on the estate?

During my 24-hour visit, I made the following observations: some houses had their windows boarded over – obviously covering glass damage; there were smashed beer bottles on the roads; obnoxiously loud music was blasting out from several of the houses during the day; there were small groups of 20-somethings looking ‘out of it’ and just wandering around; cars were being driven recklessly on the narrow roads by young men; there was even someone yelling obscenities at passers-by from a top floor flat.

In addition, I saw several men walking the streets with cans of beer, glaring balefully at passing cars.

So who, in their infinite wisdom, decided that psychological manipulation was somehow a better role model for disciplining the majority of children than the short, sharp, shock of the smack?

I suppose the justification for this policy must be the fact that the banning of corporal punishment in schools has seen a vast improvement in child behaviour and discipline. Just ask any teacher.

Or, the lefty luvvies have watched too many reality TV programmes where a Mary Poppins nanny figure is parachuted into a family in order to control the undisciplined, spoilt, feral child from hell.

Either way, another dogooding “not living in the real world” policy.

I love listening to BBC Radio 4’s ‘Desert Island Discs’ on Sunday morning, presented

by Kirsty Young and its wide range of guests and music.

This Sunday was no exception, with guest Phil Scraton, a working class man from Liverpool who progressed from bus conductor to become a professor in criminolgy.

Scraton has acted on behalf of political prisoners and deaths in custody, he has advised the families who have been campaigning over the Hillsborough football disaster as well as offering support to the residents of the Grenfell Tower disaster in London.

His choice of music was good too, selecting Gerry and the Pacemakers’ ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’, Labi Siffre’s ‘Something Inside So Strong’ and Joan Armatrading’s ‘Love And Affection’.

Phil Scraton is a breath of fresh air at a time when Parliament and accusations

I am of a sufficient age to have fond memories of longgone days when local shops operated a deposit refund scheme for glass bottles.

For many children, myself included, the few pennies earned by returning bottles provided a useful supplement to meagre pocket-money. It also involved us, although we did not realise it at the time, in an activity that was a precursor of present-day recycling.

Sadly over the years such refund schemes were abandoned, but their re-introduction and extension to include ubiquitous plastic bottles would go a long way to improving the state of our streets and countryside which are often blighted by litter in general, but plastic food and drink containers in particular.

On a wider scale, even remote Arctic beaches have shockingly been found to be heavily polluted with plastic.

The damage caused by plastic items to the world’s

oceans and its myriad forms of sea life is well-documented by scientists whose research has suggested that by 2050 the ocean will contain more non-degradable plastic by weight than fish.

As we are all now aware, this toxin-bearing plastic is now finding its way into the food chain.

Is this really a legacy we want to leave for future generations?

There is much that we as individuals can do to improve this lamentable situation, beginning perhaps by trying to rein in our craze for bottled water.

Is much of it really any better than considerably cheaper tap water? But commercial companies too have a vital role to play, especially in reducing the amount of hard plastic used in packaging goods.

The government could also play its part by introducing a tax on the sale of single-use plastic bottles, similar to the very effective levy imposed on plastic carrier bags.

Another straightforward measure would be the reintroduction of deposit return schemes which would provide a financial incentive for people not to jettison their empty plastic bottles which all too often end up in landfills where they may take centuries to degrade.

Showing Parliament at its best and worst O VER the past couple of weeks in Westminster there have been two pieces of legislation debated which would make a real difference and are of great importance to the people of Batley and Spen.

Each one represents a different side of the Parliament, in one case at its best and the other at its frustrating worse.

Starting with good news, the Government decided to side with the Labour Party and support the ‘Protect the Protectors’ legislation.

In short, the legislation will give our emergency service workers greater protection from attacks at work.

Making it an aggravated assault to attack a firefighter, police officer, or a paramedic for the first time.

During the debate I asked whether PSCOs would also receive these greater protections and I’ve been given assurances that they will be.

And the legislation couldn’t be more necessary. In the last year alone a staggering 1,240 West Yorkshire Police officers and 134 Mid Yorkshire NHS workers have been assaulted at work.

These are people who give their lives to working in our interests, the absolute minimum we owe them is their safety, and if an incident does happen, they’re well protected.

I’m glad that this proposal is

now well on its way to becoming a law and it’s not a moment too soon.

As for the second example, on Friday just past, MPs were debating and supposed to vote on, whether 16- and 17-year-olds should be allowed the vote.

It was clear from the start of the day that certain Conservative MPs were going to try every trick in the book to stop the debate going to a vote.

MPs were filibustering (talking for an excessive amount of time) and even hanging around outside the chamber for so long that one of the clerks had to prod them with a sword!

It’s such a shame because I believe the argument on votes at

16 has already been won and it’s time for the law to catch up.

Take Batley and Spen’s very own Emily Warrilow. At her young age she’s already a political activist and ahead of last week’s debate launched her own petition, receiving hundreds of signatures in support.

Who are we to tell her that she shouldn’t have her voice heard at the ballot box?

I cannot help but think it is short-sighted by those who took steps to block the law, because although they’ve denied the 1.5 million 16- and 17-year-olds for now, they’ll be 18 soon...

And of course, I couldn’t let this week pass without mentioning Doreen Kenny collecting the George Cross, awarded to her late husband Bernard Kenny, from the Queen.

Bernard was honoured for his incredible bravery when attempting to stop Jo Cox’s attacker. During the attack Bernard was stabbed, he went on to give evidence at the trial and earlier this year, sadly died.

When the George Medal was announced Bernard said he was ‘honoured’ and we’re incredibly proud of him.

A true hero.

News In Brief ‘Clown’ accused remanded for trial GOMERSAL: A man who allegedly used a clown mask and a brick hammer in a theft has been remanded ahead of a trial.

Simon Chambers, of Butts Hill, is accused of going to an address on Oxford Road in Gomersal on September 24 equipped with the items. The 31-year-old pleaded not guilty to the charges as well as denying stealing cosmetics and deodorants from Wilkinsons in Dewsbury on another occasion.

Chambers appeared at Kirklees Magistrates’ Court through a video link from HMP Leeds and was kept in custody until his trial on November 16.

District pays its respects to fallen CHILDREN joined military veterans at one of Dewsbury’s traditional remembrance services on Wednesday.

They stood side by side in the Garden of Remembrance on Longcauseway at a service conducted by Rev Elizabeth Lee. Children and staff from St Paulinus Catholic Primary School in Dewsbury attended the 11am dedication. Youngsters, veterans and surviving family members planted crosses. Mayor of Kirklees Coun Christine Iredale also attended.

Remembrance Day parades and services will be taking place across North Kirklees on Saturday and Sunday.

Organisers in Mirfield, which is believed to have the largest parade in the UK outside of Whitehall, are again expecting a large turnout.

One man, John Hemingway, is set to lay two crosses on the war memorial in Ings Grove Park after travelling from France to honour his relatives 100 years after their deaths. Mr Hemingway is a descendant of Mirfield brothers Arthur and George Loader, who were both killed in the Battle of Arras in May 1917.

Lords first for Baroness CLECKHEATON’S Baroness Kath Pinnock will lay a special wreath at the town’s Remembrance Day service in a national political first. Baroness Pinnock, a Lib Dem councillor for the last 30 years, was keen to lay a wreath in her capacity as a member of the House of Lords.

The former leader of Kirklees Council wrote to Lord Fowler, the Speaker of the House of Lords, requesting the use of the House logo. He agreed and will also be laying a wreath at the Cenotaph in Whitehall on

behalf of the House of Lords.

Baroness Pinnock’s father served with the Royal Artillery. He was seriously wounded at Dunkirk and was one of the last troops to be evacuated.

She said: “I am very pleased to have started what I am sure will be a growing trend of members of the House of Lords laying wreaths at their local memorial. I shall be laying mine this year with pride, and remembrance of my father and the disabilities he suffered as a result of war.”

Spa raises cash for infant stricken by meningitis A SPA manager is hosting an event to help raise money for a baby suffering with meningitis.

Becky Doyle, of Gomersal Park Hotel’s Dream Spa, is putting on a coffee morning in the spa’s bistro with help from sales manager Mandy Gettings.

The pair are offering minifacials and massages at £5 each, alongside coffee, tea and home-made cakes.

All proceeds will go directly to the family of 10-month-old Kia Gott, who was diagnosed with meningitis last month when she was rushed into hospital after she had developed a rash over her face, neck and chest.

It is feared little Kia will require the amputation of all four limbs.

A Justgiving page has been set up to support the family in paying for the adaptations they will need in their home, and both Becky and Mandy are hoping to make as much as they can to add to the almost £25,000 raised so far.

Becky and her husband Colin Doyle, a goalkeeper at Bradford City, have already

donated £1,000 to the fund.

Their son, Liam, now seven, also suffered from bacterial meningitis and they have raised £180,000 via their charity, Liam’s Smiles, to help people who have experienced the disease.

as well as coming along to help raise awareness of meningitis.

we must declare the area as an AQMA,” said Mr Wood.

“Although it is never positive to find out that part of our area is being affected by poor air quality, it is a positive step that we have identified it and are looking to take action to resolve it. A report has been agreed by Cabinet to make these formal declarations.

“Following identification of AQMAs the law says we must, within one year, produce an action plan for that area detail-

ing all the measures we are going to take to improve the air quality. Action planning is the most important part of managing air quality in a district.”

Ainley Top, Huddersfield town centre, Outlane and Edgerton were also all declared under target.

A new five-year plan and air quality strategy is being planned. There are already two AQMAs in the area – one in Scout Hill, Dewsbury, and the other in Bradley.

Aston Manor could be forced to shut after latest blow

Care home unsafe and badly managed

By Staff Reporters A CARE HOME in Dewsbury is at risk of being shut down after health watchdogs rated it as ‘inadequate’.

Care Quality Commission (CQC) inspectors visited Aston Manor care home on Moorlands Road in August and September this year.

The care home, which provides care for up to 32 people, had been rated inadequate following a previous visit in April and it remains in special measures.

Another inspection will take place in six months, and if there are no significant improvements then the service could be closed down.

Aston Manor was rated

inadequate in four out of five areas – it was deemed to be not safe, not effective, not responsive and not well-led.

The report also included concerns about the presence of the Legionella bacteria, breaching the Health and Social Care Act 2008.

It said: “The risk of the occurrence of Legionella bacteria in your water systems appears to be out of control.

It is very likely that the Legionella bacteria will occur in your water systems.”

A risk assessment had been completed by an external contractor in July but results showed that no action had been taken to resolve the issues.

The scathing report went on to state that residents’ social interaction with staff was limited and there were still gaps in staff training.

There was a significant lack of risk assessment in place, and care plans did not contain enough detail.

Care plans and daily records were not always accurate and “there was still more work to do” about the way staff interacted with people. Staff had also told inspectors that they did not think the registered manager had “the skills to do the job”, with concerns again raised about governance.

Care home owners Mauricare did not respond to our request for comment.

Resting place of so many notables N THE past year The Press has made many references to the Spen Valley Fame Trail – attempting to elaborate on places and people who had been noted as deserving of ‘fame’ by the Spen Valley Civic Society.

We have also attempted to highlight others perhaps deserving of recognition, and one place which, arguably, should have been included was Heckmondwike Upper Independent Chapel and Burial Ground.

The current Upper Independent Chapel, on the corner of Chapel Lane and High Street, is the building originally erected as a Sunday School in 1858 with finance from Jeremiah Firth.

But it arose from a congregation of ‘dissenters’ who first began meeting in 1674 at Abraham Naylor’s farmhouse in the Swash – subsequently pulled down to accommodate Heckmondwike Railway Station on the Heaton Lodge and Wortley Line.

Local historian Mike Popplewell continues his look at some of the lesser-known aspects of Spen Valley history church was formed with just 13 members and developed into a congregation of hundreds in a building, currently housing private flats, that became known as the ‘NonConformist Cathedral of the North’ and with a leadership that was to establish one of the most forwardthinking Congregational assemblies in 19th-century England.

Although the Spen Valley Fame Trail does not highlight the Upper Chapel itself there are plaques allocated to Joseph Priestley, John Curwen and Francis Popplewell, who were all members of the Upper Chapel congregation at one time or another.

With continuous worship in Heckmondwike for a period of near-

ly three-and-a-half centuries, now under the banner of the United Reformed Church following the merger of Congregationalists and Presbyterians, this is one of the oldest surviving non-conformist congregations in England.

One of the characteristics of the non-conformist believer was their attitude toward industriousness, and it is no surprise to find the burial ground behind the church housing the final resting place of so many of the industrialists who provided the people of Heckmondwike with over 150 years of employment.

Among them was Sir Thomas Freeman Firth, the uncle of Prime Minister Herbert Henry Asquith.

His great uncle James Firth, who

built Flush House and the gardens which are now Firth Park is also there, along with Sir Thomas’s father Edwin, who was responsible for the building of the last Upper Chapel and establishing the family blanket weaving company at Flush Mills and his great grandfather Jeremiah Firth, brother-in-law of Francis Popplewell.

Francis, who established the town’s first Blanket Hall at the back of his pub The George, is also buried here.

Alfred Firth was another of Jeremiah’s descendants who was to make a name for himself in the woollen industry.

He once lived at Beevor House in Heckmondwike and also had a fine detached home in Gomersal, behind the rows of terraces lining the main road into Heckmondwike, but he also had another claim to fame as one of the first Spen Valley men to play cricket for Yorkshire.

In fairness he was no Hutton, Trueman or Boycott. He played just one game, at Dewsbury in 1869, scored four runs in his only innings and didn’t bowl a ball – but he gave good service to Heckmondwike CC. These are just a handful of the names on headstones that still survive.

Many monuments were removed and destroyed when the chapel was converted to flats and many more when the old burial ground was sold off to build houses.

But the whole site remains a monument to a way of life in the town in the late 19th and early 20th centuries and to the people who helped build the town and develop its prosperity as either workers or employers.

Expanding to help those most in need

T WAS a cold night last Friday – but that didn’t stop volunteers helping feed the homeless and needy from across the district.

I

Every Friday outside Dewsbury Town Hall, Ash Hussain and his Batley Homeless Project team give out hot meals and daily food essentials to those most in need.

Over 40 people are fed from 6pm to 7pm each week, with meals from Batley-based takeaways Frankie’s, Chickanos and Ali’s fast food restaurants all donated for free.

Staff members from the restaurants even pop down and help serve the food.

And local supermarkets like Tesco in Cleckheaton and Mirfield Co-op give whatever they can to help the cause.

It’s a remarkable project, one that 29-year-old Ash started from his mum’s kitchen just two years ago.

When I went to have a look at the good work he was doing, he

Ash grew up in a single-parent household and realised the struggles people faced in society.

He said: “It’s always been in my heart, I’ve always wanted to be able to give back.”

And so the Batley Homeless

Project was born with Ash and his brother, 38-year-old Shane, at the helm.

So far, they have raised over £5,000 through sheer hard work and determination.

As well as providing support on a Friday, Ash has also been able to work directly with

families in need.

Recently a migrant family contacted the homeless project after being left stranded following a move to the area.

Because of the project’s partners across the north, Ash and the team were able to provide everything from a home in Bolton to household essentials and a job for the father.

And none of it could be possible without a band of around 20 volunteers who help out through the project’s partnership with the National Citizen Service.

In the longer term, Ash wants to be able to provide training for the volunteers to help with their future job prospects.

He also wants to set up a Batley Homeless Project centre, where those in need get the chance to get back on their feet with hot meals, clean clothes, shower facilities and job training.

The project has just become a registered charity and continues to grow week after week.

Abdul Kahar, of Bangla Lounge, is hosting a 65-seat dinner at his restaurant to raise money for LAMB - a rural health and development project serving the poor in north west Bangladesh.

Abdul is now in his seventh year of owning the Indian restaurant, but it is the fifth anniversary at the new premises on Low Lane.

Each year he chooses a different charity to fundraise for.

Around 30 of LAMB’s volunteers will be at the event on Thursday November 23.

The night kicks off at 7pm with a set meal, as well as a performance from Bollywood dancers, a magician and karaoke to keep the night going.

There will be an auction as well as chances to donate on the evening.

Festival have been months in the planning, with an outdoor market of more than 75 stalls completely sold out.

There’s a packed programme of entertainment and fun for all the family, and it all culminates in the big Christmas Lights switch-on, promising to be a great day.

Such has been the success of recent events that organisers are continually having to juggle the available spaces.

The main stage can now accommodate the huge crowds while Savoy Square will be the home of Santa’s Grotto and sleigh – and he has some surprises in store this year!

Santa is bringing some very special guests – a petting farm, complete with reindeer clad in festive garb for the occasion!

There are lots of festive activities for younger people plus fun fairground rides.

The Ambition Academy dance group from Gomersal will be performing on the main

stage where Pulse radio presenters will be hosting the fun from 2pm until 5pm, along with performances from other local groups and choirs.

Ahead of that, from 10am to 12noon, the three local churches of St Luke’s, St John’s and Whitechapel will be staging their annual craft fair in the town hall.

And Cleckheaton is sure to be busier than usual, with this year’s big day coinciding with Armistice Day – November 11.

There will be a Royal British Legion parade at Memorial Park on Greenside and for any revellers who forget their poppies, local boy scouts will be out and about collecting for this best of causes.

And finally, at 5pm, Santa Claus will be joined by the Mayor of Kirklees, Coun Christine Iredale, to light the town up in all its glory.

It’s a real ‘be there or be square’ moment for super Cleckheaton.

Jenny Seagrove escapes the curse of the brilliant new stage play The Exorcist ... or does she?

OULD the notorious curse of The Exorcist be real? Actress Jenny Seagrove, who opened in The Exorcist at the Phoenix Theatre in London’s West End, tells me: “The play is pretty full-on and yes at times frightening, but we want the audience to be shocked and enjoy it.”

Jenny, though, admitted: “I do now listen out for every noise when I am in the theatre alone, that is how much the play has played on my mind.”

Jenny as ever gives a splendid performance, and it’s well worth going to see.

OLIVIA COLMAN will take over the reins from Claire Foy to portray The Queen in hit Netflix series The Crown, it’s been officially confirmed. The Broadchurch actress will play Queen Elizabeth II in seasons three and four of the show, which are expected to be released in 2019. Insiders tell me that this will help her break through in the US. Congratulations, Olivia.

IT WAS recently announced that Hannah Spearritt is set to join BBC soap EastEnders later this year. But she tells me that she has not quit singing all together after her years in S Club 7. “I love music and yes, the band, but I want to be an all-rounder and appearing in such an iconic show is amazing ... I never dreamed I would get the role at all.”

BEST known for her role as Karen in Coronation Street, actress Suarrane Jones will star in Vanity Fair on ITV. Due to air next year, filming has begun on location in Budapest and the UK for the lavish adaptation of William Makepeace Thackeray’s classic novel. She tells me: “I always wanted to do a great period drama piece, and this is it.”

COASTAL Railways With Dame Julie Walters is another travel series with a difference. She told me: “I don’t really bother with a script on the show, as I like to natter to folk and see where the story goes, plus going to all those wonderful coastal towns and the history.

I really have enjoyed making the show, and I hope it shows when it comes out next year.”

ITV has ordered Al Murray’s Make Christmas Great Again, a one-off TV special starring Al Murray, as his Pub Landlord character. The channel says: “We have some great guests and surprises. We think he will be something special this festive season.”

THE CAR Eric Morecambe was driving when he suffered his first heart attack is set to fetch around £100,000 when it is auctioned off next month.

‘ENDEAVOUR 68’ filming has got into full swing as Abigail Thaw joined co-stars Shaun Evans and Roger Allam while shooting in London. Abigail, the daughter of Morse star John, admitted to me she was a tad worried about joining the show, but: “I had visited the set so many times when I was younger, so it kind of feels like home in many ways, and I know Dad would be so proud of me joining his part of this great legacy.”

THE Great British Bake Off’s move to Channel 4 was “not a snatch” from the BBC, the outgoing C4 chief executive has said as he defended its acquisition. David Abraham said: “It was up for grabs and we simply made an offer, it was accepted and so we all moved on. I am thrilled now at how well it’s doing.”

Feel the acceleration HEN you are browsing websites on your mobile phone, have you noticed the AMP symbol?

It stands for Accelerated Mobile Pages and here’s what it means.

Accelerated mobile pages have been around for a while now, but we are starting to see more and more of them when we search Google using our phones and tablets.

The reason we are starting to see more of them is that their structures are optimised for mobile, and as such these websites rank higher when optimised for the keywords you are searching for.

They are particularly common within the news arena. If you search for ‘latest news’ on your device you’ll see all of the mainstream press now have AMP websites and are all featuring at the top of the search engine.

This is just the first take-up of this technology, but we are expecting to see more and more businesstypes adopt AMP technology as it is clear to see how quickly these pages get to the top of the search engines.

What are they?

AMP websites fit a very strict

coding structure that guarantees their performance on devices where page speed performance is essential for engagement.

The bells and whistles are stripped out of these pages to ensure the pages load quickly, and from a development point of view there is no scope for deviation.

If the web page does not meet the AMP criteria then it will not be classed as AMP and you’ll be left with a very boring-looking page that doesn’t rank.

If your webpage meets the AMP guidelines, then you benefit from a cached version of the page being served up from Google’s own servers (your website still sits on your own server, but the AMP pages that are delivered do not) which makes the experience even quicker for the user, and as the website

owner you could see your traffic significantly increase as a result.

These types of web pages are not for everyone because as a developer there is very limited scope, but if you do have an information-rich offering then they could be the way forward if you want to get ahead of the competition, and quickly rank at the top of Google for your content.

Night chills at Bagshaw Aquarium by David Vann Review by staff member Carly Butler QUARIUM is told through the eyes of a now grown-up Caitlin looking back at her 12-year-old self.

Caitlin lives in Seattle in a subsidised housing development with her mum Sheri.

Her best and only friend at school is Indian migrant Shalini, and other than her mum’s occasional boyfriends these are the only two people that Caitlin has in the whole world.

Caitlin’s mother works long hours in a construction job to try to provide the best she can for her daughter.

Her job often means she has to leave Caitlin to fend for herself, and each day after finishing school she visits the local aquarium whilst she waits for her mother.

It is here that what appears to be a chance encounter with an old man turns Caitlin’s world upside down.

As a dark family secret is unearthed, Caitlin’s mother shifts from caring and strong-willed to something much darker.

Filled with anger, she becomes frightening and unreachable. Will anything in Caitlin’s life every be the same again and will her once idyllic relationship with her mother ever truly recover?

Aquarium is David Vann’s fifth novel and is a truly beautiful story about love, resentment and the struggle to find forgiveness.

I was hooked from the beginning and needed to know what was going to happen to Caitlin.

There were some beautiful and touching moments between Caitlin and her mother which were in stark contrast to some of the darker moments which made for very uncomfortable reading.

Caitlin is facing decisions that are forcing her to grow beyond her 12 years. This is definitely a coming-of-age novel with a difference.

I cannot review this book without taking the time to mention the beautiful illustrations throughout.

Caitlin’s love of fish is portrayed with a different fish illustration at the start of each chapter, giving us a glimpse into the beauty that Caitlin feels and the inspiration she gets from the aquarium and the way it transports her to another world.

I would definitely recommend this book and am looking forward to discovering more of David Vann’s novels.

CHILLING tales from the golden age of ghost stories will be read aloud by candlelight at night at a spooky location in Batley.

The classic ghost stories will be read by storyteller Matthew Bellwood in the Gothic mansion house at Bagshaw Museum.

Situated at the top of the Wilton Park’s sprawling woodlands, the museum by night event will be a new experience for many.

The Unquiet Dead will be a reading of two chilling tales from the golden age of ghost stories, featuring MR James’s grisly

account of black magic in the Midlands, Lost Hearts, and Edith Nesbit’s haunting saga of thwarted love The Shadow.

Matthew Bellwood, a Leeds-based writer and storyteller, said: “They are classic ghost stories and just the thing for a cold, dark November night.

“Bagshaw Museum is full of quirky corners and exhibits, and to be there after dark will make it the perfect location for a ghost story.

“The stories Lost Hearts and The Shadow are handpicked and appropriate to

the era of the museum.

They remind us of a time when the streets were lit by gas lamp and people had to think about how to entertain themselves.

The 90-minute event being held on the evenings of November 15-16 is organised by Creative Scene, in collaboration with Rebecca Winwood, of ‘Shuddersfield’ fame.

There will also be the chance to explore the many intriguing objects collected by Walter Bagshaw including ancient Egyptian artefacts, birds of prey and an

Edwardian dolls house.

Paul Gales, manager of Bagshaw Museum, said he was looking forward to the audience experiencing the museum in a different way. “This is not a traditional museum event and taking place late at night is certainly different for us,” he said.

The Unquiet Dead takes place on Wednesday November 15 at 6.30pm and 8.30pm and Thursday November 16 at 8.30pm.

Flavia’s beautiful, mesmerising show TANGO MODERNO At Bradford Alhambra Until November 11 Review by Janet Black A VISIT to The Alhambra Theatre always lifts the spirits, it’s such a beautiful building inside and out and really does Bradford proud.

This week we were ready to witness another magical show featuring Vincent Simone and Flavia Cacace, but sadly, Vincent had been ordered to rest after a minor injury.

However, this may have been to our advantage as in Vincent’s place – “to fill his little shoes” as Flavia announced before the show – were two absolute masters of dance, and boy they did not disappoint.

Pasquale La Rocca, an Italian, and Leonel Di Cocco from Brazil are both world-class performers and revered by the world of dance theatre.

They took to the floor with Flavia for different dances with exquisite style.

Accompanied by a troupe of terrific dancers, there were lots of modern influences and very cleverly-performed storytelling.

Well narrated in rhyme, a special mention has to go to Tom Parsons, who kept the whole show together

with humour and pathos.

The clothes in the show and Flavia’s beautiful dresses were designed and created by Strictly's very own Vicky Gill and of course, watching Flavia is mesmerising.

She is completely perfect, beautiful to look at – she has lost her flapper ‘bob’ hairstyle – and moves with such grace and elegance, but once in that Tango hold she is breathtakingly fast and thrilling to watch.

LULU – ALL ABOUT THE MUSIC At Bradford Alhambra Review by Janet Black LULU – ALL ABOUT THE MUSIC, featured one of our country's best loved performers showcasing some of her many hits as well as tributes to heroes of music who she has performed with in the past.

Lulu came on stage dressed casually in a leather jacket, black trousers, trilby hat and shades.

She changed for the second half into a black t-shirt with long shirt over the top but kept the hat.

It was a more sophisticated, mature and calmer Lulu than the one we remember from years gone by, however she doesn’t seem to have lost any

of her appeal or energy.

In a nostalgic mood, she reminisced about those early successful years in showbiz where she performed with the great and the good.

In a collaboration with her brother she has recently brought out a new album.

This is an album of quality. I had no idea that they had written a number one hit in the USA for Tina Turner with ‘I Don’t Wanna Fight’, along with some other pretty successful numbers over time.

She featured a couple of songs from the album but mainly played all the old and well-known hits from her past of which we are all so fond, and was supported by an incredibly talented six-piece backing band.

She is still small, neat, sweet and her voice has not changed, she can still belt them out with the best of them and had a great rapport with the audience.

Of course, it had to be ‘Shout’ that got the audience to its feet and had people dancing in the aisles, and to great applause and appreciative shouts from the audience she and the band ended the show on a huge high.

receive host of awards PLAYERS from across the Heavy Woollen district are set to receive awards at the Bradford Cricket League presentation dinner at Headingley on November 17.

Treble-winners Hanging Heaton have two players who will pick up individual awards for the best batting and bowling averages in the Premier Division.

Nick Connolly scored a total of 1,165 runs throughout the course of last season, the most of any batsman across all Bradford League divisions, with a superb average of 89.62.

Connolly and Gary Fellows also made the highest-scoring opening partnership with 146 runs.

Muhammed Rameez took 57 wickets throughout the season and had the highest average of 10.56.

Hartshead bowler Iain Wardlaw was the highest wicket-taker across all the divisions, with 76 wickets taken in 2017.

Mally Nicholson from Cleckheaton was the deadliest wicket keeper in the first XI divisions with 12 stumpings.

In Championship Two Hartshead Moor’s Mohammed Khan topped the batting average chart with an average of 86.69 from his 1127 runs.

Asif Ali of Liversedge earned the best bowling average, with 8.33 from 63 wickets.

LIVERSEDGE’S winless run stretched to four games after they shipped five goals away at Hemsworth Miners Welfare.

Jake Thompson scored Sedge’s only goal on 71 min-

utes but it proved to be of little worth as the hosts had already scored all five of their goals.

The hosts sailed into a 4-0 lead inside the first half-hour with Richard Collier opening the scoring on five minutes.

Collier doubled his personal tally on 28 minutes to make it 4-0 after goals from Bradley Dockerty and Adam Wilson had helped put

Hemsworth in complete control.

Midway through the second half Adam Hayton added a fifth for the hosts before Thompson pulled one back for Sedge.

Liversedge are away once again tomorrow afternoon as they travel to Maltby Main (3pm) before another away tie at Hall Road Rangers on Tuesday evening (7.45pm).

OSSETT ALBION go to promotion-hopefuls Harrogate Town this week hoping to repeat their fine performance at home to Harrogate Railway in their last outing and dent the North Yorkshire side’s hopes in the race for promotion.

Railway arrived at Ossett as the in-form team but a goal from Charltotte Gough had Albion level at the break and they dug in to keep the second half goalless and secure a 11 draw.

The point moved Railway into joint-top spot and their neighbours Town are a point behind in third place.

It is back to West Riding County League action for Ossett Town this week when the second-placed First Division side go to leaders Farsley Celtic reserves, in the top game in this division.

There was disappointment for Town in their last game when hopes of a League Cup giant-

killing were quickly extinguished in a 6-1 defeat at home to Premier Division Tingley Athletic. Four goals from Tingley’s Shannon Cavan sealed it for the visitors.

Dewsbury Rangers, also from Division One, were on the wrong end of a ‘giant killing’ when they went down 6-4 at home to unbeaten Third Division side Phoenix in the League Shield.

Hannah Dole (two), Sian Thomas and Elizabeth Wood were the scorers for Dewsbury in that game and they now take on Leeds City at home.

It was a different story at Second Division promotion-chasers Lower Hopton where they took on Premier Division Brayton Belles and won 2-1 with goals from Dani Anthony and Ruby Marlow.

On Sunday Lower Hopton will be looking to maintain their 100 per cent start, and draw level with leaders Middleton Athletic, when they are at home to bottom club Hebden Royd. Middleton are in League Shield action.

In the same division the Ossett Town Development side are at home to Ripon City, having won 5-1 at home to Durkar in their last game.

CLECKHEATON lost by a narrow margin yet again in North East One, with defeat away at West Hartlepool.

The Moorenders led at the break but could only muster a second-half penalty goal as they slipped to their fifth defeat in nine games.

The hosts scored the game’s first points with a penalty after just two minutes.

Hartlepool continued to dominate the early proceedings but Cleckheaton held firm and scored the first try of the afternoon just before the half-hour mark.

Cleck created pressure with a dominant maul which generated space out wide, the ball was moved along the backline and looped over the final defender to Pat Foulstone, who had the simplest of run-ins.

Swetman was unable to convert but did kick a penalty after the home side were penalised for killing the ball on the line.

Hartlepool’s Ryan Painter was sent to the sin-bin for the offence.

Either side of the half-time whistle Hartlepool missed two penalty attempts as Cleck managed to hold onto their five-point lead.

However Cleck soon fell behind as Gavin Painter touched down

Nine minutes from time Cleckheaton were left with an

to score under the posts.

With few minutes remaining the Moorenders reduced the deficit to a single score as Swetman put over a penalty.

Cleck threatened to steal the win in the dying moments but they were

unable to find a way through before the referee brought proceedings to a close.

It is derby day for Cleckheaton tomorrow (Sat), as they look to get back on track with a home win against Huddersfield YMCA (3pm).

OSSETT became the first team to beat second-placed Mosborough this season in a topsy-turvy encounter on Saturday afternoon.

The hosts left the field with five league points after securing a bonus point and moved into third place in the process.

Ossett were first on the

scoreboard after forward Louis Dunbavin crashed over from close range following a number of phases inside the Mosborough 22.

The home side continued to mount the pressure on their opponents and should have scored a second but for an error at the breakdown.

The visitors took advantage and soon found themselves with a penalty 10 metres from the Ossett line.

Mosborough opted for the scrum instead of going for

three points, a decision which was rewarded with seven points as the number 10 slid over underneath the posts.

The away side then made the most of an error from Ossett as they hacked a loose ball forward and chased well to ground the ball for a try.

Ossett responded well to going behind as Tom Rogers broke through and offloaded the ball mid-tackle to Ben Jennings, who scored to the right of the posts.

The visitors went further in

front soon, after however, to make it 21-12 at the break.

After a stern half-time team talk Ossett were first to score in the second half.

A superb individual effort from James Bayes-Walker, who ‘dodged, ducked, dipped, dived and dodged’ his way through several Mosborough defenders to score.

Skipper Jack Drury added his second conversion of the afternoon to reduce the deficit to two points.

The visitors were next on

the board as the fly-half sent the ball out wide following a scrum, the backs went on the outside of the Ossett defence to score in the corner.

The hosts then received a penalty for a late hit in the Mosborough half, the tackler saw yellow for his efforts.

Drury duly slotted the penalty between the posts to bring his side to within four points.

Nathan Spurr was influential in helping Ossett regain the lead, he picked the ball up, handed off one man before

drawing another three.

He then produced a onehanded offload which was gathered by Sam Wilkinson who touhced down to put Ossett ahead.

The visitors kicked a penalty moments later and led 29-27 with only a few minutes left on the clock.

In the dying seconds Ossett were awarded a penalty 25 metres out. Drury stepped up and calmly punted the ball straight through the uprights to win the game.

OSSETT TOWN made it seven games unbeaten away from home in the Evo-Stik league as Emile Sinclair’s late strike rescued a point against Clitheroe.

The hosts went 2-0 ahead inside the opening 15 minutes in what was a nightmare start for Town.

Brad Carroll latched onto a through ball with eight minutes played before laying it off to Gregory West who drove the ball past Leigh Overton.

Carroll turned from provider to scorer minutes later as he headed home from an in-swinging corner.

Overton then produced a smart save just before the half-hour mark to prevent the hosts going further in front.

Burgess and Walmsley retain England places DEWSBURY-BORN Alex Walmsley and Tom Burgess have retained their places in the England squad for the final Pool A game against France on Sunday.

Both played a part in England’s 29-10 win over Lebanon, with Burgess scoring England’s final try mid-way through the second half.

It was Walmsley’s first competitive appearance for England, and the former Dewsbury Celtic player thought his debut would never come after missing the clash with Australia in the first round.

“I thought it was never going to happen at one point last week, being in bed, hooked up to a drip – it wasn’t ideal,” said Walmsley.

“To have finally got out there was a massive honour, it was a really proud moment and a dream come true.”

Walmsley is the first player from Dewsbury Celtic to earn international honours for England, rather than GB, and the prop forward said he was proud to be able to share the moment with his family.

He said: “It was really great to have my little lad and the missus with me, you always want your loved ones with you in those big moments.

“Lebanon brought a lot to the party and made it difficult for us, it was a really good game to make a debut in.

“We had good energy levels but there is still a lot to work on.

“I want to play as many games as I can in the World Cup, I have missed one and I don’t want to miss any more.

“It is going to be a tough game against France, they have a lot of Super Leaguebased players and it is going to be another good test.”

England kick off their game against France at 10.00am on Sunday, with coverage starting on BBC Two from 9.30am.

Young Riz on fire Birstall Vic complete double PURGE BOXER Rizwan Aslam became the 52kg Open Class Yorkshire champion at the CYP Championships last weekend.

The victory means Rizwan has now won two Yorkshire titles to go along with the national title that he claimed two weeks ago.

The 15-year-old fighter won by a unanimous decision, in only his 13th fight, against opponent Marco Brown from Jorvik Boxing Club – who has had more than double the number of bouts in his amateur career.

One of Rizwan’s coaches, Mohammed Amin Patel, who has coached Rizwan for over four years, said that the win was thoroughly deserved.

“It was amazing, we were confident he could win because of the level he was boxing at, he fought someone who had 29 fights and he still won by unanimous decision,” said Amin Patel.

“A lot of other trainers were coming up to us saying that he is a special kid, we knew that as well, as the talent has always been there.

“He is maturing, he boxed with confidence, listened to the instructions and executed the game plan really well.

“Rizwan has had issues outside of the ring with his brother passing away but now he is just enjoying his boxing, his attitude is brilliant. He is still working like he is an underdog.”

The Purge Academy now boasts four Yorkshire champions, two national finalists, and one national champion.

BIRSTALL VICTORIA UNDER-15S were crowned Division Three Champions after securing a convincing victory in their final game of the season.

The hosts dominated from start to

finish, with Cottingham Tigers only managing to cross for a consolation score.

Birstall’s man of the match Kane Ellis scored a hat-trick while other tries came courtesy of Ryan Kitchen, Kian Richardson and a Robson Stevens double.

Harry Copley made sure of maximum points as he converted all seven tries.

Strong defending saw Birstall keep their opponents at zero until a string of late penalties forced the home side into defending their own line for several sets, resulting in the Tigers going over to score their only try of the game.

Batley add Farrell to ranks

BATLEY BULLDOGS have signed young half-back Izaac Farrell on a year-long loan deal from Huddersfield Giants, in an agreement that has no option for a recall.

The 19-year-old had come through the academy at Huddersfield and signed his first full-time contract with the Super League club earlier this year.

Farrell, who is the younger brother of current Batley forward Joel Farrell, also spent time on loan at Swinton Lions last season.

Head coach Matt Diskin is excited to have the youngster on board for 2018.

“What Izaac does is give us something different, he has got great footwork, great speed and agility and he adds some youth, he will be able to change games and pull us in a different direction,” said Diskin.

“He is someone we need in order to avoid becoming too one-dimensional.

“He has played against us for Swinton and he was very good with the ball in hand, we know what he is capable of.

“Izaac also adds some real depth to the half-back position, however, I am making no bones about it but when Patch Walker and Dom Brambani are fit they are my best half-back partnership.

“It is a great signing for the year but it still doesn’t solve our long-term

problem at half-back.

“From the club’s point of view we need to make sure we add people at half-back that can help us in the long term and that is proving very difficult at the moment.”

The Bulldogs have returned to preseason training this week after finishing the 2017 season with defeat against Sheffield in the Championship Shield semi-final.

Diskin believes his team perform better without any expectation and he wants to give his players a few weeks to settle before he begins to set targets.

He said: “We have been doing some testing and have had some meetings to see where the boys are coming back from the off season.

“The team have earned some rest, we want to see where they are and where they need to be by the end of pre-season.

“Last year we set an ambitious goal of making the top four and we fell short of that.

“I don’t think we handled that expectation well, the group thrives on being the underdog.

“I believe we can be a very very good side in this division and I need all the players to buy into what we want to do and I’m sure they will.”

Meanwhile, Batley have confirmed two more pre-season fixtures this week with games against Wakefield Trinity and Doncaster RLFC. The clash against Wakefield will see John Kear and Keegan Hirst return to Mount Pleasant on January 14. The Bulldogs will then travel to Doncaster on January 28.

Prince, 47, originally hails from Derry in Northern Ireland but has lived in Birstall for the past 21 years.

Prince has been retired from professional snooker since 2004 and never thought it possible that he would make another 147 break.

“I was in the Irish club in Birstall and they have never had a big break, so when I hit the 147 everyone was over the moon,” said Prince.

“I was the first professional from Derry and I moved to England in 1987 to try and turn pro, I turned professional in 1990 and then moved to Birstall a few years later.

“I only live 300 yards from the Nash club and I am really happy to get my first 147, since retiring, in the Nash.

“I never thought I would get another 147, I was playing my oldest son and that made the moment all the nicer.”

A 147 break is the maximum break achievable in a game of snooker and it requires a player to pot all 15 reds with 15 blacks for 120 points, followed by potting all six colours in order for a further 27 points.

was recorded on the CCTV in the club and Jason is glad he will always be able to look back on his 147 frame.

He added: “ I have seen the footage myself, it is nice to have.”

DEWSBURY RAMS head coach Neil Kelly is determined for his side to remain focused when they make their first transatlantic trip to Toronto next season.

Dewsbury play the Toronto Wolfpack on Saturday June 16 but Kelly does not want to treat, the historic game lightly.

“It is not like you are going on holiday to Toronto and going sightseeing for two weeks,” said Kelly.

“It is going to be a very busy four-to-five day schedule that we will have and for us it is about trying to keep the players focused in the down time we will have over there.”

SKIPPER: Rams captain Paul Sykes lies to warm-up for the 2018 season, the first game being the annual Boxing Day derby with Batley.

A testimonial game for Paul Sykes against Bradford Bulls has been scheduled. The Rams captain is also set to sign a one-year extension deal with Dewsbury.

Sykes, 36, has so far made over 50 appearances for his hometown club as well as over 100 appearances for Bradford in two separate stints.
