By Staff Reporters A CROOKED lawyer who stole millions from a law firm and its clients could face an extended jail term if she does not pay back almost £2million in the next three months.

Linda Box, of Halifax Road in Dewsbury, was jailed for seven years in March for stealing over £4million from client accounts at Wakefieldbased Dixon, Coles and Gill.

Box, now 68, was a company director of Dewsbury funeral directors Eric F Box, based on Bradford Road, until her crimes were discovered last year.

Her massive deception over a 12year period forced the closure of the 200-year-old law firm.

Box was back at Leeds Crown Court on Tuesday for a proceeds of crime application hearing.

Judge Penelope Belcher ruled that Box had benefited to the tune of £4,085,058 from her criminal conduct and must pay back £1,943,045 of her realisable assets within the next three months.

Box will face another eight years in prison if she does not pay up.

The bulk of the Dewsbury grandmother’s offending related to the misuse of clients’ accounts, from which

she made payments to members of her family including her two sons, sister and the family-run funeral business.

She also used the money to fund her lavish lifestyle, including £800-anight stays at The Ritz in London for her and her family and a collection of vintage wines for her son worth £800,000.

Other spending included paying off mortgages for relatives, private school fees for her grandchild and landscaping work at her home.

She held a special account in the Harrods store in London and on one occasion spent £11,000 for her family to visit the Edinburgh Festival.

Box also paid £236,554 in marketing and public relations costs for her husband’s firm of funeral directors.

Det Insp Dan Tillett of Wakefield District CID said after the hearing:

“Box led an extremely lavish lifestyle of five-star hotel breaks, luxury holidays and extravagant spending which saw her purchase a holiday home in the Lake District.

“Despite already having what many would view as a very highly paid role as a solicitor, her greed saw her defraud and steal from very vulnerable people, including recently bereaved families, to fund this spending.

“Our specialist financial investigators have worked very hard to uncover the complex web of Box’s frauds and identify assets purchased during her criminality.

“We are delighted to have secured such a large confiscation against her today which should help ensure she will not be able to benefit any further financially from her criminal behaviour.

“I hope those defrauded by Box will take some further comfort from knowing she now faces the significant confiscation, on top of the prison sentence she is now serving.”

How the recovered funds would be distributed would be looked at in the future. Should the money not be paid and the extra prison time imposed, the confiscation order would remain in place.

SPEN VALLEY District Scouts are urging adult volunteers to sign up and help with growing membership.

Scout groups are currently having to turn young people away because there aren’t enough adult volunteers wanting to take on leadership roles.

Monday night saw five new volunteer leaders join the team, but more are needed to help with the nine scout groups in the areas of Cleckheaton, Gomersal, Scholes, Hightown, Liversedge, Birkenshaw and Hunsworth.

Linda Holroyd, Danny Wells, and Amy Turnbull were invested as leaders of the Dreadnought Explorer Scout Unit along with James Moran and Kai Holden, who were also invested as leaders of the Vanguard Explorer Scout Unit.

Their investiture was conducted by District Commissioner for Scouts, David Sowden.

Business in jeopardy after £100,000 raid

By Zoe Shackleton A BUSINESS owner could be forced to close her beauty clinic after robbers ransacked it and stole equipment worth £100,000.

Adele Brindley opened the Mirfield branch of Eternal Youth just 15 months ago but now faces having to shut it completely.

The aesthetics clinic, next to Whiteleys Garden Centre on Far Common Road, was broken into some time between 5pm on Saturday November 11 and 8am on Sunday November 12.

Burglars smashed through the back window of the shop and took a specialised Plexr eye-lift machine and Restalyne dermal fillers, as well as six white and blue Perfect Peer medical peel machines.

They also took all of Ms Brindley’s furniture – including silver-coloured mirror furniture, two white leather chairs, and three silver-coloured antique mirrors.

Ms Brindley is offering a £5,000 reward for the safe return of the lost equipment.

Eternal Youth’s original clinic is in Heckmondwike and it is currently uncertain whether her Mirfield branch has a future.

“It’s going to be thousands and thousands and thousands (to fix),” said Ms Brindley.

“We’re trying to get all the support and help we can. Companies

I work with have been really good – the Plexr system has given us a machine to set back up with, free of charge. That was worth £30,000.

“At the moment, we don’t know whether we’re coming or going.

We don’t know whether we can afford to do a full refurbishment on it or whether we’re just going to have to let it go completely.

“It’s heartbreaking really. The psychological impact of it all is worse than the financial impact.”

The 47-year-old, who used to work as a cardiology nurse at Dewsbury and District Hospital, is currently operating her business from the shop on Market Place in Heckmondwike.

She has a team of five staff, but some roles could be at risk if the company has to downsize to one clinic.

“There are even jobs on the line,” said Ms Brindley. “If we have to downsize and go to the one clinic then I won’t be able to afford to keep these guys on, which is another heartbreaking thing about it.

“All the blood, sweat and tears, all the years of working hard and studying and going to university – to be all taken in a heartbeat, I just can’t get my head round it.”

Kirklees Council’s bereavement services provide around 3,000 cremations, 500 full burials and 130 burials of ashes each year.

Cremations cover their own costs and are not subsidised from other funds, but burial services currently lose money.

Of the 500 burials, 15 per cent are done out of standard hours and 25 per cent are child burials.

Coun Graham Turner, cabinet member for corporate services, said: “The burial services currently operate at a loss and we need to ensure the costs are covered.”

News In Brief Man held after crash CLECKHEATON: A 21-year-old man was arrested for a string of offences following a three-car crash last weekend.

The driver fled from the scene which saw vehicles – including two that were parked – damaged on Westcliffe Road at 2.20am on Saturday. A silver Renault, a BMW and a Range Rover were involved.

A police spokesman said: “A 21-year-old man from Cleckheaton has been arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving, driving whilst unfit through drink or drugs, failing to stop at the scene of a collision, theft of a motor vehicle, driving whilst disqualified, driving without insurance, burglary and possession of a Class A drug. He has been released under investigation.”

Man, 76, dies in chemical incident A 76-YEAR-OLD man died at a house in Thornhill Edge due to ‘chemical exposure’.

The man’s body was discovered on Tuesday lunchtime at a property on Jacksons Lane.

Police, ambulance and fire crews attended and the road was cordoned off from around 1.15pm. Specialist firefighters were deployed to take samples from the scene because of the chemicals.

It is believed the man has died due to chemical exposure, but it is not yet known what substances were involved.

News In Brief Town centre ban DEWSBURY: A man has been given a Criminal Behaviour Order banning him from the town centre for persistent offending.

Romanian Zoltan Jonas pleaded guilty to an offence of criminal damage which dated back to July 13 last year. The 26-year-old hit a Vauxhall Corsa with stones and was arrested.

He failed to turn up at Kirklees Magistrates’ Court when he was summonsed.

Jonas, of Bradford Road in Dewsbury, was arrested at Huddersfield Royal Infirmary on Monday. Kirklees magistrates heard that he had been involved in several drunken incidents in the past. He was banned from entering Dewsbury town centre for two years, as well as being banned from drinking alcohol in any public place other than a licensed premises for the same period.

Jonas must also pay £100 compensation, a £250 fine and a £30 victim surcharge.

Taxi passenger caught with sub-machine gun

By Steve Martyn A RAVENSTHORPE man has admitted possessing a submachine gun after being arrested by armed police.

West Yorkshire Police last month

carried out a planned operation in the Quarry Road area of Westtown in relation to drugs and firearms offences.

Faisal Younis was stopped by officers on October 12 with a MAC-10 sub-machine

gun, two self-loading pistols and a quantity of ammunition in a rucksack.

It is understood that the 31-year-old was a passenger in a taxi when he was stopped. Officers also searched a flat on Quarry Road and found a sawn-off shotgun under a bed.

Younis’s arrest came after police had

wrongly raided the home of Zaffar Iqbal during the same operation (reported in The Press, October 20).

A further three men aged 25, 27 and 28 were also arrested following a further raid where Class A drugs, cash and firearms were seized.

Younis, of Tanhouse Street,

Ravensthorpe, made his first appearance before a Bradford Crown Court judge on Monday morning via a video link to HMP Leeds, where he is currently remanded in custody.

He pleaded guilty to the charge of possessing a prohibited weapon.

He also admitted the possession of

more than 40 rounds of ammunition, possession of two selfloading pistols and a sawn-off shotgun.

Younis, however, pleaded not guilty to possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life.

This case will be tried by a jury on April 5 next year. He was remanded in custody until then.

Vigilantes trap paedophile

In fact, the girl turned out to be a decoy set up by an organisation of paedophile vigilante hunters called Silent Justice.

The 43-yearold was instantly told that the girl was only 12 but he carried on talking to her, asking her where she lived and sending indecent photographs.

The girl refused to send him a photo of herself but arranged to meet him on June 22 at Dewsbury R a i l w a y Station.

When asked by the girl what they would do on the day, Shah, of Stonehyrst Avenue, Crackenedge, said that they could “have sex if you want”.

He was discovered by two men from Silent Justice sitting where he said he would meet the girl. Police had already been contacted and he was arrested.

At first, Shah denied arranging to meet the 12-year-old girl to have sex – claiming he did not believe that was her age. Police examining his phone found he had made searches for terms such as “super sexy teens”.

Leeds Crown Court heard that he had initially pleaded not guilty to the charges before deciding to admit the crime.

Shah admitted attempting to incite a child to engage in sexual activity and attempting to meet a child following sexual grooming.

He was jailed for three years and two months and ordered to register indefinitely as a sex offender.

Mullins family’s fury at release of son’s killer Mortimer strangled 12-year-old Steven in Caulms Wood

By Staff Reporters THE family of murdered Dewsbury schoolboy Steven Mullins have expressed both their fear and fury over the impending release of his killer.

Steven, aged 12, was on his way home from Birkdale High School in November 1982 when 37-yearold Richard Mortimer attacked and killed him in Caulms Wood.

Mortimer, whose mother lived in Earlsheaton less than a mile from the Mullins home on Pennine Road, escaped to Scotland where he also tried to attack two other children, before being caught back in Dewsbury.

He made the family sit agonisingly through the prosecution part of his trial at Leeds Crown Court before changing his plea to guilty. Steven’s partially-clothed body was found by search teams.

He had been strangled with his school tie.

Mortimer was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum tariff of 16 years, but is only now being released some 34 years later.

Steven’s dad Michael Mullins says they have tried without luck to get answers from the authorities.

“Why has he been kept locked up for 34 years?” he said this week.

“What has he done, what is wrong with him that he’s continued to be considered a danger to the public for 34 years?”

Four years ago the family was told Mortimer was being moved to an open prison where he would eventually be allowed out unsupervised. At that time they were assured only that he was excluded from Dewsbury town centre.

Now letters from the Probation Service have indicated Mortimer will be freed in December, and

News In Brief ‘Friend’ accused of attempted fraud DEWSBURY: A woman has had her case sent to Leeds Crown Court after allegedly trying to steal from a stroke victim.

Maria Kolompar has denied two charges of fraud by false representation. It is claimed the 49-year-old befriended the victim, who is 74 with limited mobility and declining health and relies on carers to look after him.

Kolompar, of Wellington Road, is alleged to have escorted the pensioner to the bank in an attempt to cash in a cheque using his bank details.

Kirklees magistrates heard that the victim could have lost £6,300 if bank staff had not been vigilant. Kolompar will appear at Leeds Crown Court on December 8.

Kenmore withdrawn CLECKHEATON: A greenfield site which was supposed to be up for sale yesterday (Thursday) was pulled from an auction.

Kenmore Field, just off Kenmore Drive, has been owned by Kirklees Council for the past two decades with a plannning decision still pending for 55 homes to be built there.

The green space was in an auction of council assets yesterday, but a late decision was made to take it off the market.

The auction at the Cedar Court Hotel in Ainley Top also included sites such as Field House on Wellington Street in Dewsbury and open land at Ravenshouse Road, also in Dewsbury.

Paula persuades Hunt to visit DEWSBURY MP Paula Sherriff has secured a commitment from Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt to finally visit the district.

Miss Sherriff has asked Mr Hunt repeatedly to come and see the impact that the hospital downgrades are having in Dewsbury and Huddersfield.

On Tuesday she asked the question again in Parliament – and this time Mr Hunt obliged.

She said: “I’ve repeatedly asked and I yet again ask the Secretary of State if he will visit my area to see for himself the damaging impact that the downgrades and closure of local hospital services in both

Dewsbury and Huddersfield will have on my constituents.”

Mr Hunt responded: “I am very happy to accept the invitation to visit her area which I will do but I know what I will see when I go there – that there are 8,300 more people being treated within four hours at her local hospital where there are 42 more doctors and 56 more nurses than in 2010.”

OAP’s knife ordeal POLICE are appealing for information after an elderly man was threatened by a knifewielding robber in his own home.

The incident happened last Friday when an intruder walked into the 83-year-old’s house on Pyenot Gardens, Cleckheaton, at around 6.15pm demanding the keys to a vehicle parked on the drive.

The victim refused but the robber then threatened him with a knife and pushed him several times.

The suspect is described as white, around 6ft tall, of medium build and aged in his 20s.

He was wearing a grey wax-type three-quarter length jacket and dark-coloured jogging bottoms.

Det Con Tracy Boucher from Kirklees CID said: “This has clearly been a frightening and upsetting experience for the victim who was thankfully uninjured.

Foes who refuse to remember WO French Air Force bomber squadrons were based at Elvington airfield outside York during World War II, adjacent to what is now the Yorkshire Air Museum.

Just down the road stands a memorial to the 216 French air crew who lost their lives flying sorties from there, and Sunday was the 60th anniversary of it being unveiled.

Every Remembrance Sunday roads through the village are blocked and hundreds come out to pay tribute at the small memorial plaque opposite the village green, before parading to the French monument, where the service is read in both languages, both national anthems are played, and senior French and British officers pay their own respects.

Canadian officers attended too last Sunday.

It’s heartwarming to see

and hear the Boys Brigade playing the Last Post before breaking into the Dambusters and James Bond theme tunes – plus Ilkley Moor Baht’at – as the cubs, scouts, guides and brownies are followed by the crowds back for either a cuppa in the village hall or pint in the pub.

CAN feel another mid-life crisis coming on. I’ve had enough by now that I have a pretty keen eye for them – indeed BBC Radio 4 featured me in a documentary about MMLCs (Male MidLife Crises) not too long ago. It’s probably still on iPlayer somewhere.

I can imagine Mrs L crossing her fingers as I write, clutching her lucky horsehoe and mumbling repeatedly “let him go for the young totty, let him go for the young totty” ... but no such luck, dear. This one’s the snazzy sports car MMLC. It’s time for my lease car to go back and I’m fancying a bit of change of pace. Change of

It’s equally ironic that Barnier, Jean Claude Juncker and friends should be increasingly intent on creating an EU military and EU finance ministry to effectively seize the continent in a bloodless revolution.

I read a fascinating piece this week citing problems from Britain’s ill-fated 1802 Treaty of Amiens with Napoleon, to PM Harold Macmillan’s broken relationship with Charles de Gaulle, our respective attitudes to ‘negotiation’ are rooted in different philosophies.

Britons look toward practicality and solution – we could agree a future border relationship with Ireland in weeks, if left to it – the French prefer to deal in rigid, immovable certainty.

As a senior British diplomat said: “The British put themselves in the position of the person they are negotiating with … the French are not interested in getting inside the thought of others.”

Cue the retort of a French diplomat: “When one is right, one does not compromise.”

Indeed a 2014 French Chamber of Commerce guide to cross-Channel relations cited Britain preferring a ‘win-win’ outcome for all parties, while the French are “proponents of ‘I win you lose’, appearing not to care if it risks breakdown.”

There’s the nut, in one.

One solution presents itself: to put the Brexit divorce bill to a binding Court of Arbitration but the EU are unlikely to accept that. They know that the figure will be miserly – because we actually owe very little.

My sense is that they see this as their shining moment.

Rather than possessing any gratitude for the fallen of two world wars, it’s their chance to make Britain pay in a way their forefathers never could.

What a cost that cancerous inferiority complex looks like taking.

The thing is, the only big stick Barnier and Co possess is the one being wielded behind our own backs by traitors like Nick Clegg, Tony Blair and Ken Clarke, and now by rebel Tory MPs many of whom are up to their selfserving necks in EU business connections.

How ironic yet again – the only faint hope of building a European empire lies with the British doing the dirty work. I wonder what those brave French airmen would make of it all?

You can’t even use ‘P’ word P HEW, I thought I was losing my touch for a minute there. So a big thanks to correspondent Nadim for taking me to task for my outrageously sexist comments in last week’s column.

Nadim says, and I quote: “If this reflects his mindset (me, obviously), I would be very nervous if I were one of his female work colleagues”.

And so say all of us, Nad, although I think you’ll find I’m quite a considerate boss. I’ve even bought extra storage heaters so the girls don’t catch a chill when working in the new staff uniforms I’ve just invested in – bikinis (and I even allow them to wear woolly socks under their stilettoes).

I should point out though, that I am well aware we can’t flatter members of the opposite or possibly even same sex any longer without being

Labour MP Kerry McCarthy really lit the town up, releasing a few mildly flattering letters from her old codger colleague Kelvin Hopkins.

The bounder wrote that he thought her pretty and attractive and he admitted having a dream about her! Lock him up and throw away the key, the dirty old perv!

I was going to ask why McCarthy, aged 52, didn’t just show her husband (or wife – no assumptions these days!) the letters and have him/her sort the old flirt out.

That would do it, you’d think – except it seems there isn’t a Mr/Mrs McCarthy. Well slap my thigh and go to the foot of our stairs ... you don’t say!

AMYA’s poppy effort

News In Brief Farm arson inquiry

MEMBERS of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Youth Association (AMYA) helped bolster the Poppy Appeal last weekend.

The Spen Valley AMYA group joined forces with the Heckmondwike branch of the Royal British Legion, marking the two minutes’ silence at Heckmondwike War Memorial in Green Park on Armistice Day, November 11, as well as helping with the poppy collection at Morrison’s.

They also donated £100 directly to the Poppy Appeal, which had been collected from members. On Remembrance Sunday they presented a wreath at the war memorial and Imam Sabahat Karim recited a prayer.

Spen Valley AMYA president Manzoor Ahmad said: “It is our duty to help the Poppy Appeal and we are delighted to be able to help in some small way.”

New library threat LOCAL libraries could again be under threat, with a further review to take place.

Kirklees cabinet members will be asked to approve another consultation on the future of library services at a meeting next week.

Over the last two years the department’s budget has been cut by £1.8 million and the latest reduction could see libraries having to operate within a budget of just £2.2 million.

Coun Graham Turner said: “The outcome the council is seeking is for residents and communities to be able to readily access information and services in order to improve the customer experience and journey first time, more of the time.

“It is important that we become less reliant on buildings and think how the service can be best delivered.”

This could mean that libraries such as Cleckheaton – one of the busiest in the district – might face closure. A similar consultation in 2015 saw the closure of Thornhill Lees as well as cutting the opening hours of others.

The mobile service was scrapped while in North Kirklees eight libraries were kept fullystaffed – including Dewsbury, Batley, Cleckheaton, Mirfield, Birstall and Heckmondwike.

The consultation would begin in the first week of January with a final report expected to go to cabinet in July.

Tories ‘starving Kirklees of cash’

By Steve Martyn NEW FIGURES show that Kirklees is one of the lowestfunded local authorities in the country.

Statistics revealed that there is nowhere else in England that has higher levels of deprivation and less government cash spent per person.

Kirklees Council gets only £673 per person from the government to fund services, while some London boroughs get almost double that.

For example, Camden – the best funded area – receives £1,171 per person.

If Kirklees was funded at

the same rate, it would get an extra £216m per year.

It has now dropped to the seventh lowest funded district per person in England.

Even neighbouring cities and towns get significantly more. The government gives Leeds £696 per head, Bradford £742, and Wakefield and Calderdale £717.

Overall, the whole of West Yorkshire is losing out compared to what the government hands out to councils nationwide.

Council leader David Sheard admitted: “There’s not a lot we can do about it other than lobby government for a fairer funding formula.”

THORNHILL: Two Dewsbury men were arrested after an alleged arson attack.

The pair, aged 42 and 48, have since been released but officers are still looking into the blaze, which caused serious damage at Calder View Farm on The Common.

Police believe it was started deliberately at the weekend.

A West Yorkshire Police spokesman said: “Kirklees District CID are appealing for information regarding the incident in which a fire broke out between 10.45pm on Saturday November 11 and 12.30am on Sunday November 12.

“It is believed the fire, which caused substantial damage to a barn, was started deliberately and enquiries remain ongoing.”

I think voting age plan is just a cynical ploy I note in last week’s Press that our two local MPs have come up with a solution for our dysfunctional, polarised, two-party state which is the result of our first past the post voting system.

This is the politically savvy group who, thanks to Facebook, Google and the National Curriculum, have the individuality of a school of fish.

Who slavishly follow the recommendations and pronouncements of their favourite media luvvy, pop

idol or internet blogger, no matter how outlandishly stupid.

To me, there is a strong argument in raising the voting age back to 21.

At least by this age, there is a

chance that potential voters have experienced something of real life.

Where not everyone will like you, and visa versa.

Where your work colleagues will be a mixed bunch of individuals, from saints to sinners. Who will have a range of abilities, social skills and ages. Who will hold world views not necessary compatible with your own.

In this environment, hopefully, there will be the slow realisation that in order to get by in life, com-

promises and disappointments have to be faced and an idealistic Utopia cannot be created whilst the world is populated by us flawed humans.

Having said that, this idea could actually be the saviour of our democracy by preventing no more stupid Brexits.

Or, to an old cynic, just another thinly-disguised ploy to garner more Labour voters of unquestioning loyalty.

Time will tell.

Bonfire battle

RE the Dewsbury town centre crash on page seven of last week’s Press (see right).

The junction of Union Street and Bond Street is dangerous. Many similar collisions have occurred.

Motorists, new to the town centre, miss the give way sign. It is often hidden by parked vehicles. Instead they perceive a narrowing of Union Street and a junction to their right.

Drawn to Union Street’s one-way signs, they drive into the middle of Bond Street – completely oblivious to fast moving traffic to their left.

The driver was looking up Bond Street confused, then continued into the Union Street one-way section.

I was about to turn into the same road so there was no danger of collision. So for each collision there must be many near-misses.

Something needs to be done before a pedestrian is

killed at this junction.

The Union Street parking could be moved to the uphill side of the road – forcing motorists to turn right into Bond Street, then left into the narrow one-way section of Union Street. No-one could then miss the give way sign.

From: Wendy Senior, Dewsbury I was at Dewsbury Hospital on Friday November 10, and I thought I would ask people how they felt things were going there after the downgrading last month.

I came away from the hospital sad as usual after seeing a quiet emergency department and knowing there were 11 ambulances and an eight-hour wait to be seen at Pinderfields Hospital last week.

I was told ambulances were going to Dewsbury, but it depended on the condition of the patients.

I was talking to someone who told me on the evening before, the engineering and domestic staff services had been sold to a private company and they were worried about what was going to happen.

Dermatology services were sold off a few years ago to Virgin, and Locala now run part of the emergency department.

After Dewsbury people years ago paying for Dewsbury Infimary to be

built and to pay for services, what have we got left? A cottage hospital.

I have written to Jeremy Hunt, Secretary of State for Health, and he says in his letters back to me that it is the commissioning group who have the money to decide what happens to our hospital, so it is about time after six years of downgrading our hospital they stood down.

Sprinkler cash From: John Appleyard, Liversedge The Government is to spend £1.3m on sprinkler systems for Parliament as a precaution against fire.

I have no problem with that, but I do object to the government denying thousands of families in UK’s high-rise property’s the right to have sprinkler systems in their buildings.

Independent research has shown that sprinklers are highly effective – extinguishing or containing 99 per cent of cases.

In the wake of the Grenfell Tower disaster, the government should give the necessary money to local authorities to carry out this vital work.

Exotic sight in Thornhill THERE are some tropical visitors to Thornhill’s Rectory Park.

Rose-ringed parakeets have made new homes in the trees, as shown in this snap from local resident John Haigh. John said the parakeets are looking to nest and despite being tropical, can cope with the cold British winters.

They feed on a wide variety of fruit, berries, nuts, seeds and grains and are frequent visitors to bird tables in winter. The parakeets have a distinct, loud squawking call, so you may hear them the next time you are strolling through the park.

28 months in jail for drunk assault on ex A MAN has been jailed for more than two years after assaulting his ex-girlfriend and her friend.

Christopher Benson (pictured), formerly of Beckett Walk, Dewsbury Moor, was already on bail for damaging his ex’s car when he attacked her. The pair had ended their two-year relationship when they agreed to meet to sort out some belongings.

Benson asked if they could rekindle their relationship and got angry when she said no. He started kicking bins on the street and punching a wall. When they bumped into each other later, Benson

stood in front of her car, then jumped on the bonnet, bent the windscreen wipers and broke a wing mirror.

The 32-year-old was on bail for that when, on August 28, he got drunk at her

Liversedge flat with the woman and a friend.

He got angry when he thought they were talking about him and punched his ex in the head. Her friend tried to stop him but he grabbed her and threw an empty bottle at her head.

Benson got hold of his ex by her hair and punched and stamped on her.

Leeds Crown Court heard that he had fixed the car damage but could not remember much because he had been drinking all day.

He pleaded guilty to assault, criminal damage and was jailed for 28 months.

News In Brief Jealous man threw eggs in row with ex BATLEY/MIRFIELD: A Batley man has been banned from contacting his former partner after throwing eggs at her during a row.

Peter Willans admitted assaulting his ex outside her home in Mirfield. The 30-year-old had turned up uninvited on October 9 and let himself in.

Kirklees magistrates heard that Willans became verbally abusive and accused the woman of seeing other people.

The woman tried to calm things down and they decided to meet again later to discuss child contact. As she got into her car she saw that Willans, of Ealand Road in Batley, was still at the house.

The pair had another argument and Willans grabbed the eggs, which his daughter was holding in the front seat of the car. He started throwing them at his ex, with some of the shells landing in her hair and on the child.

The couple have three children together but separated last year.

Willans was sentenced to 12 weeks in jail, suspended for a year. He will also have to complete 40 hours of unpaid work and 10 days of rehabilitation activities.

Magistrates banned Willans from contacting the woman and he is not allowed to go to her home for a year.

He has to pay £85 in court costs and a £115 victim surcharge.

Church calendar GOMERSAL: A church-goer has designed a birthday calendar to raise funds. Trees Fewster, of Listing Mill Farm, has incorporated the churches and pubs of Gomersal into her calendar which she created to raise money for St Mary’s Church on Spen Lane.

Students’ thumbs up to Dewsbury medics TWO doctors and their colleagues at Dewsbury and District Hospital have been recognised as an “outstanding clinical team”.

Emergency consultant Patrick Tung and junior doctor Nick Raynor were commended by medical students at Leeds University in a recently-launched scheme recognising clinicians for their contribution to teaching.

The students praised the help and support they received during their onemonth placement in Dewsbury’s A&E department.

“It’s great to know how much the students value their placement with us,” said Mr Tung. “Training the doctors of tomorrow and keeping their enthusiasm for their medical

career going is really important. It’s a tough job with a lot of training and we strive to make it as realistic for them as possible.”

Mr Raynor, who did his placement at the hospital and is now a junior doctor in A&E, said: “The training I received from Patrick and his team was fantastic. It gave me a real opportunity to be hands-on and put the theory I had learnt into practice.

“As a student you want to be where the action is, caring for your own patients and this A&E placement gives you plenty of opportunity to do that.”

Andrew’s aid efforts give hope to orphans

By Zoe Shackleton THE Birstall-born founder of a charity has opened his first family orphan home in Ukraine – and received a humanitarian award for his efforts.

Andrew McVeigh is the founder of Take Hope, which provides support and aid for Ukrainian youngsters who have

been orphaned or abandoned.

St Albans House, in the town of Vinogradiv, was eight years in the making and was officially opened on Saturday, November 4.

Andrew, 59, who is also on the committee at Batley Bulldogs, negotiated with Ukrainian authorities to be able to take orphaned and abandoned children from the state orphanage system and provide them with a family home environment to give them security, protection and life opportunities.

He was also presented with a Ukrainian humanitarian award by the head of the Vinogradiv regional government, recognising his personal work and commitment to the project.

He said: “It means a lot to me, it was quite emotional because it was totally unexpected. I’ve had a lot of ups and downs in my life and this keeps things in perspective for me.

ing moment because there has been real hard work that’s gone into this and a lot of sacrifice.

“For a very small organisation to be recognised like that is quite an achievement.”

Andrew works as a barrister intermediary and started the charity in 1995 when it was known as Convoy of Hope.

He had worked in Serbia and seeing the effect of war, he kick-

started his own humanitarian work.

From there, he started helping deliver aid to Ukraine.

“It’s alright taking lorry-loads of aid out there, but they need something permanent because the kids in the orphanages have zero chance in life,” said Andrew.

“A lot of them commit suicide.

Others get involved in the sex trade, crime and drugs because they’ve no qualifications.

“Our plan is to build more of these family homes once we have the funding.”

He explained how difficult it has been to get funding, while some people have left legacies for the charity which helped towards the project.

He said: “The next challenge is to take it to the next level and start looking seriously at getting grants from organisations.

“It’s been a long journey, but a worthwhile one when you see the kids.”

There are already seven children living in the home and Andrew described how there have already been some remarkable changes in their lives.

Brabin raises benefit woes BATLEY & Spen MP Tracy Brabin has urged the Prime Minister to use common sense over plans for Universal Credit.

At Prime Minister’s Questions on Wednesday, Ms Brabin pinpointed flaws in the Universal Credit scheme that have delayed the applications of two of her constituents.

She said: “A couple in my constituency have had their Universal Credit application delayed because the lady doesn’t have any photo ID. “She can’t afford a passport and doesn’t drive. Instead she must wait for her dentist and doctor to confirm her identity.”

The Labour MP added: “Use some common sense, transfer identification from

legacy benefits over to Universal Credit and stop unnecessary delays giving my constituents more pain and suffering.”

In response, Prime Minister Theresa May defended the roll-out of Universal Credit and asked

“As we run up to Christmas, Theresa May needs to step in and pause and fix Universal Credit.

“In the particular case I raised, Theresa May asked me to contact the Department for Work and Pensions Secretary of State directly, which I’ll certainly do.”

School singers in brass concert A TRADITIONAL festive atmosphere will be created in town on Saturday, December 2, when the ever-popular Hammonds Saltaire Band joins with the Batley Parish School singing group to present a Christmas concert in Batley Town Hall.

This is the 10th successive year that the two have got together to produce concerts which have proved immensely popular with local folk.

The band, conducted by Morgan Griffiths, was a runner-up in this year’s county championship contest and has secured a place in the national finals.

Tickets are priced at £12 for adults, £10 for concessions and £5 for under 16s.

What a day when Cleck lit up!

THOUSANDS of people flocked to district’s first Christmas lights switch-on in Cleckheaton.

Those who attended the Victorianthemed Christmas festival were treated to an afternoon of live musical and dance entertainment, performances from the Travelling Light Circus, market stalls and even a fairground.

The main stage was hosted by Pulse1’s Danny Mylo and Rosie, with Santa Claus switching on the lights on Northgate alongside the Mayor of Kirklees, Coun Christine Iredale.

Children were able to feed Christmas jumper-clad goats at the petting zoo – which has proved so popular it has already been booked for next year's

event. Organised by the Spenborough Chamber of Trade, the event has become one of the most popular and well-run switch-on events in the district.

Chamber of Trade treasurer Mark Hepworth said: “What the small organising team can achieve with local support is truly amazing.

“Social media feedback has been fabulous, with some comments taken on board already on how we can further improve the visitor experience for 2018.”

Around 8-10,000 people are estimated to have visited the Christmas festival throughout the day.

HeckmondLIGHT 2017 set to thrill thousands HOUSANDS of people are expected to attend Heckmondwike’s biggest event of the year on Saturday November 25.

HeckmondLIGHT will celebrate the town’s festive lights switch on, marking a tradition dating back to 1863.

So much going on all day!

HE COUNTDOWN is on to this year’s Batley Christmas lights switch-on celebration.

With Kirklees Council no longer able to fund and organise the event, the switch-on is being backed by Batley Business Association with support from Fox’s Biscuits and Creative Scene.

And there is certainly plenty going on!

The fun takes place on Saturday, December 2 in the Market Place.

After a performance from local singer Jade Helliwell, the country music star will be turning the lights on at 6pm with a little help from some friends.

Jade will be performing from 5.30pm on the big stage before switching on the lights with the Deputy Mayor, Coun Gwen Lowe, and Santa.

Acorn Theatre Group will be the first performance on stage at 3.30pm and other entertainment will include the Sarah Taylor School of Dance, Batley Community Choir and local singers.

Before then there will be entertainment, fairground rides, a Christmas market and the ever-popular Snow Globe for visitors to enjoy.

Santa Claus will be seeing children and distributing presents from his grotto near the Town Hall.

Some of the market and the rides will be open in the morning and the

main event starts at about 3.30pm.

The switch-on will be followed by an LED light show from the Travelling Light Circus Company (pictured above), organised by Creative Scene.

The play, by Edward Percy and Reginald Denham, is a thriller set in the Victorian era and is described as ‘grimly powerful and first-rate from beginning to end’.

The play is produced by Mary Glover and the cast includes locals Rosi Smith, Allison Pollard, Margaret Brooke, Mark Webster, Brenda Colbeck, Dorothy Cape and Sue Gray.

Organised by Birstall Chamber of Trade, the fun switch-on event takes place on Tuesday, November 28.

Whilst Santa will be in his grotto as usual, Iron Man, Darth Vader, Storm Troopers, Ewoks, Luke Skywalker and Boba Fett will also be in attendance to keep the crowds entertained.

Situated in the library, Santa's grotto will be open from 3pm until 5pm, when he will be meeting children and giving out small gifts free of charge.

At 5.45pm he will return in his sleigh to meet everyone in the village centre, then he’ll make his way to the lights switch-on point for about 6pm.

Throughout the day there will be performances by the Chris & Lucy Beaumont School of Dance and an LED light show from Kirklees Creative Scene.

The lights switch-on will take place at 6.15pm after the councillors' address and a blessing from the Rev Paul Knight from St Peter’s Church, Birstall.

This year the lights will be turned on Iron Man! Arts project Creative Scene, is supporting the festive light turn-on by funding the Travelling Light Circus, with their colourful glow shows.

OSSETT is preparing for its most festive day of the year – the Christmas lights switch-on.

On Saturday November 25 the town centre will be hosting its Victorian Christmas event, which concludes with the switch-on of the lights.

The day starts at around 10am, with a Victorian market in the precinct.

Throughout the day market stalls will be selling a range of goods, alongside fairground rides, donkey rides and there’s a chance to visit Santa in his Grotto.

Visitors will also get the chance to meet a variety of reptiles and birds of prey outside the Town Hall.

Longest panto run ever Cinderella line-up announced REHEARSALS are underway for Theatre Royal Wakefield’s festive pantomime, Aladdin.

Cast members Chris Chilton (Abanazar), Danielle Bird (Wishee Washee), Dean Bray (Aladdin), Paul Hutton (Hanky Panky/Djinn), Beth Tuckey (Empress), Melissa Rose (Jasmine) and panto dame regular Chris Hannon (Dame Widow Twankey) have begun their preparations for what will be the longest run of panto ever at Theatre Royal Wakefield.

Leading them will be Chris Hannon, as he takes on the role of co-director along with Louise Denison, Theatre Royal Wakefield’s resident choreographer.

With a huge run of 83 performances ahead of them, the cast and crew will be pulling out all the stops, ready to open

the show on Thursday November 23.

Louise Denison said: “Once again we have an incredible dancing chorus joining the professional cast. I am amazed by the local talent and skill these youngsters bring to the Wakefield stage.”

Chris Hannon added: “Rehearsals are coming along fantastically and I’m delighted to be working alongside such a talented cast of performers.”

Aladdin promises to be full of audiences’ favourite panto moments, songs, dances and jokes, and the team at Theatre Royal Wakefield have only two and a half weeks of intensive rehearsals to bring this traditional story to the Wakefield stage.

THE ALHAMBRA Theatre in Bradford has announced the remaining principal cast members who will appear alongside Bradford pantomime king Billy Pearce, singer and Loose Women panellist Coleen Nolan and stage star Shane Nolan in this year’s pantomime, Cinderella.

Graham Hoadly and Yorkshire performer Jack Land Noble will appear as the Ugly Sisters; Cinderella will be played by Sarah Goggin; and Sam Barrett joins the cast as Prince Charming.

Barnsley’s Jack Land Noble is a prolific actor, playwright, producer, director, musician and songwriter.

He graduated with a First

Class Honours degree in Drama from the University of Huddersfield in 2012, and is the founder of The Yorkshireman Company.

Graham Hoadly returns to the Alhambra Theatre in Bradford, where he has performed many times, most recently in the international tour of Mary Poppins as Admiral Boom and the Bank Chairman.

Sarah Goggin most recently played Sister Mary Robert in the UK tour of Sister Act for Jamie Wilson Productions.

Fireworks, Santa and lots of fun VERYONE’S welcome to join in the fun at third annual 'Drigmass' event, when Drighlington comes together to see the village's lights switched on.

This year will be bigger and b e t t e r than ever, w i t h Station R o a d closed off o n S a t u rd a y November 25 to make way for stalls, a funfair and live entertainment.

Running from 1pm to 5.30pm, the event is free and features 15+ seasonal stalls and a variety of food stalls, funfair rides and liquid refreshment provided by Drighlington Cricket Club.

News In Brief Couple on trial over sex and assault case NORTH KIRKLEES: A Ravensthorpe couple denied charges relating to a sexual offence when they appeared at Kirklees Magistrates’ Court.

David Bartlett, 34, pleaded not guilty to the sexual touching of a female when she did not consent. The alleged incident happened at an address in Dewsbury on Februrary 15, involving a girl aged 16.

His wife, Kelly Pearce, 36, denied a charge of assault occasioning actual bodily harm in relation to an alleged attack that happened during the same incident, but to a different woman. The couple, of Tanhouse Street, were granted unconditional bail until their trial on February 26.

Children in Need DEWSBURY: Mount Tabor Church in Shaw Cross is hosting a community fundraiser today (Fri). The event, raising money for Children In Need, will feature a bike-a-thon and a community cafe from 9am-7pm.

Dewsbury Rams mascot Roger the Ram is expected to make an appearance while the cafe will be serving breakfast, lunch and afternoon tea, as well as a kids’ zone from 47pm. There will also be a tombola stall and organisers are appealing for prizes.

Dual theft charges NORTH KIRKLEES: A man accused of two separate thefts has denied both.

Andrew Bould denied targeting an address on Boothroyd Lane, Dewsbury, between July 23 and 24 when he appeared at Kirklees Magistrates’ Court via video link.

He allegedly took copper pipes worth £450. The 44-year-old also pleaded not guilty to stealing £250 from a man in Mirfield on July 19.

Bould, of Clare Hill in Huddersfield, will stand separate trials for each offence. He was remanded into custody.

Tiffany’s on top again HEALTH and fitness expert Tiffany Clark has been recognised again as an award winner. The owner of Sxe Fit studios in Heckmondwike struck gold as the Businesswoman of the Year at the Inspire awards in Morley.

The 36-year-old has 10 years of experience in the fitness and dance industry, which she combines in her training methods at the studios on Alfred Street. She said: “It was a complete shock to me.

I was not dealt with the most fortunate of cards at the start of my life. But to show the world that if a girl from Halton Moor can achieve and win businesswoman of the year, then you can achieve anything.

“I have worked to the bone for everything I have to get to this stage, and it’s all my amazing clients and results that give me that drive to keep striving.”

HISTORY: Mike Popplewell looks at Birstall’s Bronte connections

Rydings Hall had a part in Charlotte’s Jane Eyre HE Rydings, at the Smithies crossroads in Birstall, found its way onto the Spen Valley Civic Society’s ‘Fame Trail’ by virtue of its connection with the 19th century author Charlotte Bronte and her friend Ellen Nussey.

Ellen, who met Charlotte at school and remained a lifelong friend, lived most of her life in Birstall, but her connection with the Rydings was for a relatively short period.

She was living there in 1832 when Charlotte visited her, but the Nussey family was living on nearby Brookroyd Lane by the time of the 1841 Census.

But, despite the fact that Ellen’s life at The Rydings, or Ridings Hall as it was later called, was only relatively brief, that visit remained in Charlotte’s memory.

When she came to write Jane Eyre 15 years later, Charlotte drew heavily on the house for her description of Mr Rochester’s ‘Thornfield Hall’, although in fact Thornfield Hall was a composite of The Rydings and Norton Conyers near Ripon.

Yet, if the first sight of The Rydings was fixed firmly in Charlotte’s memory, it is reasonable to assume that her early impressions of Ellen Nussey were similarly compelling.

While photographs and paintings of Ellen in her later years present her as a rather severe, imposing character, Charlotte clearly saw a different side to her as a teenager and is believed to have used her as the basis of the character Caroline Helstone in her novel Shirley.

In any event, the connection between Ellen Nussey and Charlotte Bronte at The Rydings was to prove only a transient phase in the life of the house. By 1905 Kelly’s Directory listed a Mrs Roberts living at Rydings Hall, then its current name.

In the 1911 ‘Thornton Edition’ of the works of the Bronte sisters there were a number of contemporary photographs, and they included the one shown here of The Rydings.

People can be seen to be sat outside the house, and though the Nussey family had long gone by this time, it was quite possibly the Roberts family members who were pictured.

Surprisingly little information is available online in respect of The Rydings, or Rydings Hall, and the building is quite likely to remain a bit of a mystery.

It may be of significance to the history of Birstall, and to the area’s Bronte connections, but The Rydings is currently part of the PPG industrial paint complex and is not open to the public.

But, who else, I wonder, has lived in this old house over the years, who we can see sat outside, and what other fascinating tales could those historic walls tell us...?

A source reveals: “We do hold quite a few back, but if they don’t show they are not invited again, rest assured.”

GOOD Morning Britain weather forecaster Alex Beresford is relieved it is no longer a secret – he is joining Dancing On Ice. But I can reveal ITV are hoping to build him up as a future face of the channel, and have him host one of their game shows. The former Asda store assistant admits: “It was just a dream to get on TV, and now it’s all coming true.”

ITV has commissioned an eighth series of Cold Feet.

The comedy-drama returned last year after a 13-year gap, and the latest series achieved a consolidated average audience of 5.1 million. Six new episodes will go into production next spring in Manchester for broadcast later that year.

GILLIAN TAYLFORTH has opened up about Harry Reid’s impending departure from EastEnders as Ben Mitchell, and admits she was “absolutely shocked” when she heard that the actor was being written out. She said: “I think it’s weird as I am his TV mum, and after years of me being away he now leaves me, which could only happen in a soap, right?”

MIRANDA HART has said she is “going to be very funny” when she becomes the first female to act as sole host of the Royal Variety Performance later this year.

SHOBNA GULATI played Dev Alahan’s wife Sunita in Corrie, leaving the soap in 2013 when her character was killed off. Now she’s returning to the world of soap in Scotland’s River City.

“I play a character called Farah who’s arrived in the area with her man AJ,” she said.

“She has a history, as they say, but I think people will warm to her. I do love this show though, as I am a big fan of Scotland.”

DAME Judi Dench’s new film Victoria & Abdul has done little business at the box office, with many wondering if there are simply too many films out about the Royal Family. A friend inside the Royal Household tells me that while they ask to see many films privately, so far this is one that’s not been requested.

Snowy fun for all the family ST MARY’S Theatre Group are rehearsing for another fun-packed Christmas show.

The group are working hard to defeat an evil curse in their pantomime ‘The Snow Queen’ at St Mary’s Hall in Batley.

Of course, they can’t do it on their own. They need help from everyone in the audience, especially children, to counteract the spell cast by the evil Snow Queen.

Will she get her evil way and capture all the little children, or will she be overcome by her twin sister Princess Sunshine and her hapless but kind gang of helpers?

Santa Claus may also be able to come and help out again this year and give all the children in the audience a present.

Group chairman Stephen Walker said: “This year we have another fun-filled, great value show. It has been written by one of our members, Janet Walker, who has been working flat-out with all our other members to bring it all together.

“We have some great performers and other helpers who put their heart and soul into it. The younger performers love it and our audiences really appreciate them.”

Evening performances are at 7.30pm on Friday December 8 and Saturday December 9. Matinee performances are at 2.30pm on Saturday December 9 and

1.30pm on Sunday December 10.

Heckmondwike student wins gold for England at Para Games HECKMONDWIKE GRAMMAR student Edward Dyson has returned home after winning gold in the European Para Youth Games in Genoa, Italy.

Edward, who recently turned 18, was part of the England Cerebral Palsy Under-19 team that claimed first place in the seven-a-side tournament.

England beat Denmark 2-0 and Spain 6-2 in the group games before meeting the Danes again in the final, which England won 3-0.

“I have been been involved with the England set-up for the past three to four years,” said Edward.

“After a couple of seasons I got picked to go into the Under-21 Development squad.

“From there I was selected for trials to go to Italy for the Under-19s, I went to those and they picked me to go.”

Edward plays as a left-winger or forward and is hoping to be part of the team that will compete at the World games next year.

However he admits he is still trying to get used to the feeling of winning gold.

“When the final whistle blew in the final, I was a bit shocked with it all – I couldn’t real-

ly take it in.

“When I got home and had the medal hung on the wall it all settled in that I had just competed in a tournament for England as a football player, I was pretty proud of that.”

Edward is also a keen athlete and competes in the T38 para-athletics class.

The teenager has had a good year on the track, as he came second in the School Games National Finals in September.

He said: “It has been a good season, I reached a new personal best and got a silver at the school games.

“For my athletics, SportsAid have decided to sponsor me for next year so it has been really good.”

Edward’s mother, Julie, also told The Press how proud she was of her son’s achievments this year.

She said: “He has got his first full England cap as well and he is absolutely over the moon and so are we.

“He is trying to concentrate on his ALevels, he also works as a lifeguard and he is doing a course with British Athletics that goes towards his UCAS, he is busier than us!”

Albion must find form ahead of Leeds United reserves clash

OSSETT ALBION go into their West Riding County Women’s Cup second-round tie at home to Leeds United reserves on Sunday on the back of a disappointing result at NE Regional League Southern Division promotionhopefuls Harrogate Town.

Having forced a highly-creditable 1-1 draw with leaders Harrogate Railway the previous week there were high hopes of producing another upset at Town but it never materialised.

Third-bottom Albion have played more games than anyone else in their division and would find themselves anchored to the bottom if the teams below them win their games in hand.

But, they have a chance to put those problems behind them with this week’s cup tie.

Despite their own poor form Albion are up against a Leeds United reserve side still looking for their first win in the FA Women’s Premier League Reserve Division (North).

It is looking a little more daunting for West Riding County League Second Division leaders Lower Hopton, however.

They face the Leeds United first team in their County Cup tie and with five divisions between them a giant-killing looks highly unlikely.

It is the men’s equivalent of Leeds United AFC visiting the Ossett Albion men’s side.

In last week’s West Riding Women’s County League First Division games there was disappointment for Dewsbury Rangers, who crashed 7-1 at home to Leeds City, but Ossett Town picked up a good point at leaders Farsley Celtic reserves as the top two played out a 2-2 draw.

CLECKHEATON have one hand on the John Bower Trophy after they defeated rivals Huddersfield YMCA on Saturday afternoon.

The trophy, which is currently held by YMCA, is named in memory of former Cleckheaton and Huddersfield prop John Bower, who passed away a number of years ago.

The cup is contested between the Moorenders and their Kirklees rivals whenever league status allows, and the fate of the cup will not be decided until the sides meet in the reverse fixture in March.

Cleck applied the early pressure on Saturday afternoon but the visiting defence held firm.

Despite the host’s early dominance it was YMCA who got the first points of the afternoon via a Gavin Stead penalty goal.

The Spen Valley men responded well and soon went ahead thanks to some powerful play from Mike Swetman.

Jack Bickerdike fed the stand-off from the back of the ruck and Swetman handed off the tackler and proved unstoppable as he went over for the try.

Swetman converted his own try to give Cleck a four-point advantage, which was soon reduced to a single point after another penalty goal from Stead.

The hosts continued to press and made good yards but were unable to turn their pressure into points until the very end of the half.

Swetman crashed over from short range for his second try of the game and converted to make it 14-6 at the break.

Cleckheaton started the second half in the same fashion they ended the first as Paul Turner, Ben Thrower, Andy Piper and man-ofthe-match Brad Marsden helped put Huddersfield on the back foot.

OSSETT RUFC have never really enjoyed their trips to York Railway Institute, however it was a different story on Saturday afternoon as Ossett completed the double over their York-based rivals.

The visitors started brightly but were unable to convert their pressure into points.

A York break, against the run of play, coupled with a slow chase saw the hosts go over for the first try of the game.

Ossett remained composed and replied through full-back Mark Fisher who received the ball, dummied his way past his marker and dotted down.

The away side upped the ante as the half wore on and drove several metres downfield with a dominant maul.

This set the platform for fly-half Jack Drury who weaved around one defender before finding Ben Kendall who batted away the tackler to score under the posts.

At the start of the second half, Drury extended Ossett’s advantage to 10 points with a penalty goal.

Another powerful maul from the visitors saw them score their third try of the game.

The forward pack trundled over the line to give Nathan Spurr the easiest of finishes.

A combination of penalties and an inability to clear their lines saw Ossett defending for the latter stages of the game.

This allowed York to go over for a wellworked try in the corner following some good back-line play.

It proved to be a consolation score as the referee brought proceedings to a close moments later.

Ossett seconds did not have the same fortune as they lost 24-8 away at Nestle Rowntrees.

OSSETT TOWN moved to within one point of the play-off places with victory over Colne.

The Reds have several games in hand over the three teams immediately above them in the league and could jump to fourth with victory in those fixtures.

Colne went ahead against the run of play as the ball landed at the feet of Ollie Crawshaw, who fired home from a tight angle.

Ossett continued to press forward with Danny South’s aerial presence and Emile Sinclair’s pace causing

problems for the visitors.

Town’s relentless pressure finally told as Colne were penalised for a handball in the area.

South stepped up and drilled the ball into the bottom corner to level the scores 10 minutes before the break.

At the start of the second half Josh Snowden thought he had put Ossett in front, but his looping header went over off the top of the crossbar.

The hosts managed to take the lead as Kai Hancock did brilliantly to weave his way through the defence, finding Liam Owen who slotted home.

Jake Ellam was on the receiving end of a horrendous challenge on 73 minutes as Lee Pugh put in a reckless

two-footed lunge, the defender was shown a straight red for his efforts.

Anthony Mackie helped Ossett make the most of the man advantage by finding Hancock with a long ball.

Hancock did well to beat the defender to the ball and cooly finished to give the hosts a comfortable two-goal cushion.

LIVERSEDGE won for the first time in six games as they came from behind to beat Hall Road Rangers on Tuesday evening.

It was the third of three consecutive away games for Liversedge, whose last win came back in midOctober.

Sedge did things the hard way as Joshua Batty put Hall Road Rangers ahead inside the opening two minutes.

The visitors almost equalised straight from the kick-off as they made their way forward and saw an effort cannon of the crossbar and out.

Joe Walton did get Liversedge on level terms when he found the

back of the net just after the halfhour mark.

Walton was then brought down in the area, earning a penalty for Sedge, however Bradley Riley had his spot kick saved by James Hitchcock.

Just when it was looking like it wasn’t going to be the Clayborners’ night Regan Fish was on hand to score the winner.

The ball was whipped into the area and Hitchcock made a superb save but could only watch as Fish smashed home the rebound to give his side the lead.

Dewsbury-born trio selected for England’s crunch quarter ENGLAND’s Dewsbury-born contingent have all been selected in Wayne Bennett’s match-day squad to face Papua New Guinea on Sunday.

Alex Walmsley, Sam Burgess and Sam’s younger brother Tom are set to play together for the first time at the World Cup as England aim to set up a semi-final with the winner of the contest between Tonga and Lebanon.

The trio had all been included in the squad for the opening game of the tournament against Australia, but Walmsley was sidelined due to a virus.

Sam was then ruled out with knee ligament damage for the next two games, of which both Tom and Walmsley played a part.

Initial fears were that the former Dewsbury Moor forward would be injured for the remainder of the tournament.

However the current South Sydney star has made his comeback sooner than many expected, being named in the starting line-up for the quarter-final clash.

Sam admits that he tried to make his comeback in the same game that

he was injured in, but was persuaded by team-doctor, Chris Brookes, to not go back on.

“I’d have finished the game against Australia if I could,” said Burgess.

“It’s a bad habit of mine, I always try to push it. I had a chat at half time with Chris and he advised me that the best thing to do was take his advice.

“Every decision that’s been made has been the right one and I’ve great trust in the staff around me.

“I’ve had similar knee injuries before, the staff made the right choice and it’s paid off now.

“I just have to do my job, I don’t have to do anything special, I’ll just turn up excited to play for England, give it my best shot and not let the team down.”

When asked this week what his favourite derby match was, the answer came easily for the former Moor junior.

“Well that’s very easy, Moor versus Celtic,” said Sam. “The rivalry was fierce back in the day, it was always a good battle and I miss those days.”

The England forward began play-

ing rugby when he was five and admitted it took him a while to get used to the sport.

He added: “My first memory of playing rugby league was when I was five years old, down at Dewsbury Moor and it was extremely cold.

“I wanted to get a hold of the ball and I got the ball and got tackled into a huge puddle.

“It was freezing and it shocked me and I ran off crying, so my parents decided I should wait until I was a year older and I went back when I was six.”

Sam was also full of praise for his brother Tom, who has featured in all three of England’s games at this year’s World Cup and scored a try against Lebanon.

He said: “Tom has had a great year for us at South Sydney. He is probably one of our best players and it is great to see him carry that form onto the international stage.

“He has been playing some good football and I was very happy to see him score a try against Lebanon.”

England’s game on Sunday will kick off at 5am and will be live on BBC Two.

Shaw Cross launch new book Live radio show at Priestley’s SHAW CROSS SHARKS launched their book, ‘70 Years of Reaching Forward’ at the clubhouse on Sunday afternoon.

London League Publications and author Graham Williams attended the event, along with many current and former members from the club.

The launch proved a great success as over 200 copies were sold and author Graham Williams believes it will prove a popular title amongst grassroots rugby league fans.

Publisher Peter Lush said: “It is a story about how a few local lads, after the war, founded a boys club to play rugby league.

“The subsequent years have seen the club produce many players for the professional game and still continue to do so.

Meanwhile, Sharks coach Zach Johnson unveiled his plans for next season at a players’ meeting on Wednesday.

RADIO LEEDS will be broadcasting a Rugby League World Cup special live from Priestley’s Bar in Birstall this evening (Fri).

Everyone is welcome to come along, the show starts at 6pm and will run for an hour until 7pm.

Radio Leeds rugby league presenter James Deighton will be joined by a host of top names including former Batley Bulldogs coach Karl Harrison.

Harrison was in charge at the Bulldogs when they won the Northern Rail Cup, beating Widnes in the final in 2010.

Francis Cummins, who began his playing days at Dewsbury Celtic before going on to represent Great Britain, will also be in attendance.

Former England Women’s captain Natalie Gilmour is another of the special guests.

Gilmour captained her country at two World Cups and was awarded an MBE earlier this year.

Current Castleford Women’s coach Lindsay Anfield will also be part of the show. Anfield, like Gilmour, has also represented her country at international level.

Awards will be presented to the first team as well as the ‘A’ team, who both lifted silverware in 2017.

The first team defeated Shaw Cross Sharks at Mount Pleasant to lift the

Jim Brown Heavy Woollen Cup while the ‘A’ team beat Ossett Trinity to win the John Kane Cup. Commemorative medals will also be handed out to mark the Trojans’ promotion to the First Division of the National Conference League.

The dress code is formal, adding a

touch of maroon to the outfit is also encouraged.

Live entertainment will be provided

by Dave Hanson and hot food will be served with the bar open till late.

There is no entry fee, however it is suggested that those in attendance donate £5 to the club.

Sharks girls earn invincible tag after unbeaten year SHAW CROSS SHARKS UNDER-14S girls have made history, becoming the first junior girls team from the club to go a whole season unbeaten.

The team, who were only formed three years ago, won all 19 of their competitive matches – scoring 668 points and conceding only 116.

The team finished third in their division last year but finished well ahead of the chasing pack this time around, and head coach Wayne Hirst is astounded by the progress of the players in such a short space of time.

“When you think that there were only seven girls playing three years ago, all at different ages, because they didn’t have as many teams,” said Hirst.

“You only played games whenever you could get a friendly, now it is a lot better as there are more teams out there.

Despite such dominance in the league the team have not been awarded a league trophy and Hirst believes it is time more recognition is given to the junior girls teams.

He said: “The leagues don’t recognise us coming top, we bought the girls a trophy which we will give to them at their presentation night.

“The league looks at it being non-competitive, despite having the league and us going unbeaten it hasn’t been recognised.

“We had a meeting with the other clubs and they all agree that we need to make it competitive.

“You have boys age groups at the same age getting league leaders shields and the girls get nothing.”

Diskin upbeat as Bulldogs return to training BATLEY boss Matt Diskin says there is a real “buzz” after his team returned to pre-season training.

Diskin, who begins his second year in charge, admits he can already see improvements and is glad to have a foundation that he can now work from.

“There is a really good feel and buzz, the boys are in good spirits,” said Diskin.

“The testing results were really positive, they came back a hell of a lot better than they did this time last year.

“So we certainly have some good foundations to build on.”

The Bulldogs have arranged four pre-season friendlies ahead of their 2018 Championship campaign, which kicks off on February 4.

Batley will play rivals Dewsbury Rams in the traditional Boxing Day derby, followed by three games in January against Keighley, Doncaster and Wakefield.

He said: “As a professional, having played the game and now coaching, when you take to the field you want to win.

“The whole point of our pre-season is that we are in the right place for those first three away games we have against Rochdale, Leigh and Swinton.

“We want to make sure our core skills are good, that our systems are right and that we make ourselves ready for the competitive games.”

Last week the Bulldogs announced the signing of young half-back Izaac Farrell and Diskin says that will likely be the club’s last piece of transfer business.

However, while the club are not actively looking to recruit any more players Diskin admits that if someone suitable becomes available, they will look at adding to their squad.

“There is nobody on the radar at the moment who is within our budget requirements,” added Diskin.

Dane Manning wasn’t on the radar and he suddenly became available, so we snapped him up.

Batley full-back Dave Scott has returned from the World Cup with Scotland and he will return to training in around four weeks’ time.

“Dave Scott will get some rest right up until Christmas,” said Diskin.

“He has had a tough, hard year, he will be better for the experience at the World Cup. “Unfortunately he picked up an injury which wouldn’t have allowed him to play the games he would have have wanted to.

“He needs some rest, he played almost every game for us last year, he was our player of the year and he deserves a break so we are going to give him that.”

One of Diskin’s assistant coaches, Mark Moxon, has also returned home from the World Cup after he was part of the Wales coaching staff.

“Mark will have a couple of weeks with the family and come and join us again,” added Diskin.

“As a coaching group, we will be better for his experience as well.”

Elsewhere, the club are holding their kit launch next Friday, November 24, where they will unveil their 2018 playing shirt in partnership with Ravensport.

Dewsbury launch season tickets

By Ben McKenna DEWSBURY boss Neil Kelly has said he is delighted after the club announced the signings of Rob Worrincy and Billy Hayes this week.

Hayes has joined on a permanent one-year deal after spending time on loan at Dewsbury last season.

Worrincy, a prolific try-scorer at Championship level, was a regular feature for Halifax in 2017 who finished in the top four, and he has also penned a one-year contract.

“I am very pleased to have both players on board,” said Kelly.

“We had Billy on loan from Huddersfield last year and he did really well before he had a season-ending injury.

“He has now recovered and added some much-needed competition for places in the back-line and makes the pack look younger.”

Hayes was initially due to join on a seasonlong loan from the Giants but Dewsbury were keen to make his deal permanent.

Kelly said: “There is no point signing a 19year-old kid, who already has first-team pedigree, and then losing him elsewhere.

“All the signings we are making we would love to see them stay, especially the younger players, who can be the foundation of the team in the future as well as the present.”

Dewsbury’s other new signing, 32-year-old Worrincy, has scored over 100 tries for Halifax in two separate spells, he has also had three stints at Sheffield Eagles, where he made 133 appearances, scoring 75 tries.

Kelly believes the winger is an important signing and that his experience will prove key as the Rams aim to break the top four.

He added: “Rob is a great player, his experience makes him a key player and a fantastic addition to the squad.

“With the squad full of so many younger players he definitely adds some much-needed experience.

“When you have got across the whitewash as many times as he has you can’t help but be pleased with the signing.”

He said: “We have got ambition for this season and for the future as well but we have got to learn some lessons from last season.

“The majority of the squad was here last season and from now until the start of season we need to prepare.

“This time is about not wasting any training session as each session contributes to performances on the field and we can’t afford to

hang around.”

Kelly is still looking to add another forward to his squad for next year but says he wants to sign the right player.

“I have not been shy to say that we need at least one more front rower or middle player in the squad,” added Kelly.

“We have got a little bit of money left to sign a player but I am not going to sign a player just for the sake of it.”

DEWSBURY RAMS have released their 2018 season tickets, with prices remaining frozen from 2017.

Adult prices start from £175 for the South Stand, concession tickets – which are for over-65s and students – cost £123.

For the North Stand, which is seated, an adult ticket is priced at £190 with concessions charged at £138, and under-16s are free.

Season tickets include access to all Kingstone Press Championship home games along with admission to Super 8s home matches, excluding any semi-final or final fixtures.

Fans will also be given a day ticket for the Summer Bash, which for this year will be on Sunday May 27.

Dewsbury and Batley will close the weekend with a game at 5.30pm on the Sunday, but fans will have the chance to watch London take on Toulouse and Rochdale against Swinton.
