Everyone welcome as open day marks launch of travel HQ A FRIENDLY travel firm will open the doors of its new premises in Cleckheaton town centre tomorrow (Sat). Carols Travel is hosting an open day for customers at its Albion Street offices, marking the start of a new chapter for the coach holiday specialists. Originally launched 14 years ago by Carol Perrins and Rodney Dodson, this is the first time that Carols Travel will have a base that’s open to customers after years of being run as a home business. The duo began running their own coach tours while still working in other roles in the travel industry ñ and they soon proved so popular that they founded their own firm. Carol and Rodney take care of everything for their guests and still welcome back customers who have been travelling with them for 14 years. “We have a lot of clients who book with us year after year as we really look after them,” said Carol, who acts as hostess on the tours while Rodney drives the coach. “I love travel and it’s great to be able to introduce people to places they’ve never been. Over the years we’ve been

SHOPPING locally means receiving professional, personal service from people who care about their business, right on your own doorstep. Towns like Dewsbury, Batley and Mirfield are the lifeblood of our communities and the people plying their trade there are our neighbours. Next week is a perfect example – it’s National Butchers’ Week. So, if you’re looking for a well-matured steak, an award-winning sausage or some top-quality pork and lamb, the best place to start is on your local high street.
Shopping locally not only supports the shops on the high street, but the farmer or manufacturer down the road too, and it puts the money spent back into the local economy. And if you want your car fixing, you want someone who’s known locally, who’s accountable, and who’s keen to build up a reputation for doing a good job, at affordable prices. That’s how we build local business, local friendships, and strengthen our communities – by keeping it local!

Pledges wanted to secure festival A MUSIC festival in Mirfield will only happen if enough people pledge cash for tickets. Principle organiser Donal O’Driscoll (below) is urging locals to log on and support his proposed twoday MFEST event at Mirfield Showground. Last year the first MFEST attracted over 450 people and received rave reviews from festival-goers. Taking place on June 20 and 21, this year Donal hopes to attract at least 1,000 people. He said: “Kirklees Council have been very supportive with my previous festivals but the money isn’t there any more. “I therefore decided to set up a crowd funding website where people can pledge for weekend tickets at the early bird price of just £20, with children under 15 free. “However, no money is taken unless and until the target of £14,000 is reached. This means we have to sell 700 tickets fairly quickly.”
More than £1,600 has been donated so far, with 40 people backing the project. Donal added: “There’ll be plenty of kids’ activities and we’ve got bands queuing up to play. We’ve already re-booked two of the most popular bands from last year, Mirfield’s very own SKA House and Twist of Fate.” In recognition of the support being given, the first 700 ticket holders will
shortly receive a limitededition commemorative wristband. John-Paul Drake, who looks after the festival’s social media, said: “We thought it would be a good talking point and raise awareness about MFEST if those people, who have already pledged for tickets, wore these wristbands.” People can pledge for their tickets by visiting

Staincliffe artist’s work on show ARTWORK by Staincliffe-based artist Ian Clegg Walsh has gone on display in the former Jack Fulton’s shop on Commercial Street in Batley. The new exhibition features seven pieces which the artist describes as “rushed, spontaneous, surreal, colourful, comic and graffiti inspired digital art”. The Batley Empty Shops Initiative aims to brighten up the shopping area by making use of prominent empty units to display the work of local artists and organisations. A collaboration between Creative Arts Hub, Batley Business Association and Batley Art Gallery, a key aim of the project has been the brightening up of the Alfred’s Way shopping centre, with displays by Batley Girls High School and Batley Poets and Writers, amongst others. Dewsbury-born Ian has lived in the Batley area for most of his life. A former Batley Grammar School pupil, he went on to make a living photographing rock bands in the 70s and 80s. He subsequently obtained radiography qualifications and has worked at LGI as a radiographer since 2011.
Artist Ian Clegg Walsh and ‘Victorian Whispers’ Ian has had a lifelong interest in Art, although for many years it was on the back burner! His large-format digital prints on display in Batley are a continuation of a series of work which began a few years ago with experiments with mosaics. Encouraged by some successful experimentation with a software package aimed at cartoonists, Ian decided to take a studio at the Creative Arts Hub in Mirfield – where he continues to produce and print most of his artwork. In addition to the exhibition of art-
work at the former Jack Fulton’s, a selection of his work can be seen at Reunion Café on Branch Road in Batley. The ‘arts café’ showcases the artwork of local artists at all stages of their career, and is now running regular art workshops and activities. Ian’s work will remain on display in the empty shop unit throughout March and April. Anyone interested in displaying their work in the shop units can contact Mark Milnes at mark@creativeartshub.org.uk for further details.

Peacock talks at Town Hall THE ROLE played by suffragettes in British political life is one very much admired by former Batley and Spen MP Elizabeth Peacock. And she will be revealing a good deal about them when she gives a talk at Batley History Group in Batley Town Hall on Monday. Conservative candidate Mrs Peacock caused quite a stir when she was elected to Parliament in 1983. She was one of only 23 women members in the House, and only 115 women had previously served in the House before her. She quickly gained a reputation as someone who had outspoken and often independent views on many thorny issues, and made history in April 1984 when she became only the second woman since Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher to successfully push a Private Member’s Bill through Parliament in her first session. The Bill was aimed at improving driving standards and it required trainee driving instructors to themselves pass the qualifying examination before receiving a licence to give tuition for payment. Mrs Peacock, who served as MP for 14 years, has a great admiration for the suffragettes and believes that her independent approach to politics – which sometimes had Conservative leaders shaking their heads – is very much in the suffragette mode. “I have lots of sympathy for the band of women who struggled for years to achieve suffrage for women,” she said. “I greatly admire those gallant ladies and believe I could have been tempted to join their ranks if I had been around at the time,” she adds in her book, A Yorkshire Lass At the Court of Thatcher. Admission to the meeting, which will be held in the main hall of the Town Hall, is £2 for members and £4 for visitors. Free refreshments are available to all from 7pm.

BURNING RUBBER: Ryan Strafford races around Brands Hatch and right, talking tactics with dad Chris between races Ian Boldy Superbike Photography RYAN STRAFFORD collected his first podium finish of the year at Brands Hatch, following a move up in class. Heckmondwike-based motorbike rider Strafford was the Thundersport GB 2014 Streetfighter champion, but opted for a climb to the Golden Era Superbikes category for 2015. A new category means a new bike, with Ryan now riding a 1000cc Honda RC-51 V-twin machine backed by Continental Tyres. The first round of the 2015 Thundersport GB series was held at the Kent circuit in near-perfect conditions. The Golden Era Superbike series is strongly contested, with several of the current frontrunning machines having been in the series for two or three years and well prepared and set up. Despite the disadvantage of a lack of set-up and track time with the new bike, RS Racing started the 2015 season with four very strong finishes. Friday’s free practice saw a lot of hard work for the team as they experimented with different settings trying to find the right balance of power and stability. Much was learnt by the team by the end of the session and a decent dry setting was reached for Saturday’s racing. Saturday consisted of a qualifying session and two 12-lap races during the day. In the morning Ryan put in an impressive qualifying time to put the RC-51 on the second row of the grid in fourth place. Some fine adjustments were made by the team to the suspension in preparation for the afternoon races. In both races Ryan finished in a very creditable fourth place, battling it out lap after lap with three other riders to come out on top of the chasing bunch and be the top V-twin rider. Sunday was even closer. In the first race of
the day Ryan closed rapidly on the rider in third position but ultimately ran out of laps and had to settle for another fourth place finish by a little over 0.7 seconds. For the last race of the weekend the team made a few adjustments to the bike and the tyre pressures. With a great start Ryan crossed the line after the first lap in third place with several bikes in hot pursuit, but by lap five he had dropped to fifth as a badly misting visor hampered his visibility. Two laps later and with a clear visor, Ryan was up to fourth chasing down the other VTwin in the pack. And a brave last lap final corner undertake saw him hold off the other V-Twin to land his first podium of the year with a hard-earned third place finish. RS Racing next compete in round two of the series at Donington Park on April 11-12. The team are looking for financial backing from local businesses. For more information please contact Chris on 07814 937619.

Birstall CC target 2015 progress BIRSTALL CC, having narrowly escaped relegation in 2013, secured a safe midtable position in the Central Yorkshire League Premier Division last summer and are hopeful of further progress this coming season. The CYL website has a countdown to the season clock on its home page, showing just 29 days this morning (Fri), and the enthusiasm is mounting as players continue the annual merry-go-round of transfers. Birstall have parted company with former Huddersfield Town footballer Danny Broadbent, who has moved to Methley, but secretary Ian Haley is excited about his club’s new acquisitions. “We have one of our former juniors returning to us
in Jaymish Patel, a right-arm fast bowler from Castleford, and Wasim Nazir from Hanging Heaton,” said Haley.
The Hanging Heaton/Birstall connection has long been established in respect of player movement, not least with Hanging Heaton’s 1,000 Bradford League wicket taker John Carruthers who began at Leeds Road and made a brief return to lead them to
the CYL title a few years back. But Nazir is not the only signing from the Bennett Lane club for the 2015 season, as he is joined by offspinner Umar Rehman who last year won the Bradford League Second Xl bowling prize with 52 wickets at under 10 runs apiece. “I coached Umar as a nine-year-old and he was a good little player back then,” enthused Haley. Birstall have had problems bowling sides out at times, and this has seriously hampered their chances of success on the league front, but if the batting can maintain some consistency, and an Australian player due to arrive soon on a student visa pays off, the prospects are good for an encouraging summer ahead.

HEAVY WOOLLEN SUNDAY LEAGUE
Scholes seal unlikely final spot DIVISION TWO outfit Scholes Athletic shocked their opponents from a higher division as they booked a place in the Heavy Woollen Challenge Trophy Final with a 2-0 win over Battyeford Reserves on Sunday. Kieran Armitage and James Crines netted for Scholes, who will meet Navigation in the final. St John Fisher maintained their six-point gap at the top of the PREMIER DIVISION after a 4-2 win over bottom side Battyeford (Jake Marshall, Jon MacDonald). Birkenshaw remain second after strikes from Will Gough, Ben Smith and Joel Farrar secured a 3-1 win at Woodman Batley Carr, who replied through Andrew Pickles. Shaun McDaid put AFC Chickenley two goals to the good, but Overthorpe Sports Club hit back through Adam Bennett, Steve Jordan and Lewis Ward to claim the points in a 3-2 win. In the CHAMPIONSHIP, Woodkirk Valley clinched promotion to the Premier Division with a 4-0 win over nearest rivals Mount Pleasant thanks to goals
‘HAVE IT!’ Battyeford Reserves goalkeeper clears under pressure from a Scholes Athletic attacker during his side’s semi-final loss Dave Jewitt from Jonny Downey, Matthew Moon, Mark McDermott and Dan O’Connor. Adam Swinden and Jean-Marie Julienne both scored as Birstall St Patricks beat fourth-placed Heckmondwike Sports Club (Joe Armour). Marsh lie in fifth place after beating lowly Taylor 5-0 thanks to
goals from Marc Harrison, James Parkin, Jason Jeffrey, Marcus Newby and Richard Harvey. Michael Calvert was Barr Street’s scorer in a 1-1 draw with St John Fisher Reserves. Deighton WMC moved back to the top of DIVISION ONE with a 7-2 demolition of Birkenshaw Reserves. Daniel Stuart led the
way with a hat-trick, Kirk Smith fired a brace, with Dale Joy and Paul Pyke also finding the net. Adam Hird and Phil Bell replied for Birkenshaw. Punch Bowl climbed to seventh spot after Harry Jones, Ryan Foster and Bradley Balmforth all netted in a 3-2 win at Bay Horse East Ardsley, who replied through a Steven Day double. Clifton Rangers won 5-2 against bottom side Overthorpe Sports Club Reserves, who had Tom Thorpe and Danny Marshall on target. With the top two sides in DIVISION TWO not in league action, Hanging Heaton Cricket Club climbed to third with a convincing 6-1 win over Six Lane Ends. Dave Hall led the way with a brace, with Chris Appleyard, Sam Hetherington, Chris Goodair and Jack Morris completing the tally. Nathan Littlewood hit Six Lane Ends’ consolation. Clifton Rangers Reserves enjoyed a 5-1 win at bottom side Batley Irish Nash thanks to Michael Shaw (two), Joe Waterhouse, Jarren Lewis and Arron Afsar, with Ryan Wilby netting for the Batley side.
NCEL PREMIER DIVISION FOOTBALL
Sedge break losing run to stun title hopefuls Shaw Lane Aquaforce Liversedge
0 1
LIVERSEDGE claimed their first win in 11 games with a shock 1-0 victory which dented Shaw Lane Aquaforce’s Toolstation NCEL Premier Division title hopes. Andy Wood’s first-half goal proved to be the difference as FA Vase heroes Shaw Lane were unable to break down a well-organised Sedge side on Tuesday night. The defeat was compounded by Shane Kelsey’s late red after an altercation with Tom Jackson which leaves him facing a three-match ban. Liversedge’s excellent goalkeeper Sam Dobbs also played a key role with an unbelievable match-winning save in the dying seconds. Looking to erase the memories of the 3-0 defeat at Worksop on Saturday, Aquaforce
started really strongly. Lee Morris missed a sitter inside the opening 60 seconds as the pressure mounted for Liversedge early on. The visitors even had their assistant manager Mark Greaves, the former Yorkshire Amateur boss, removed from the technical area for remarks made to the referee Mark Powell in the 12th minute. Kelsey then rattled the crossbar with a long range pile-driver. Sedge had to rely on their vastly-experienced goalkeeper Dobbs to make several saves and he was rewarded when Wood raced through and scored midway through the half. Alan Colquhoun’s men then set their stall out to defend and protect their lead but they were opened up occasionally. Joe Thornton’s long run forward sent Kelsey through and the striker
UNBEATABLE: Sam Dobbs went around Dobbs, but couldn’t score past the last defender Jackson. The second half continued in the same vein with the away defence heading and kicking every single piece of danger downfield. Wood was a handful for Shaw Lane and he made Liversedge dangerous on the break. Eli Hey was inches away from doubling their lead with a strike that cannoned back off the post. Aquaforce’s task became harder with the dismissal of Kelsey, who
became embroiled in an argument with former Farsley defender Jackson. Assistant referee Allan Clearie spotted something untoward so Kelsey made his early exit. Shaw Lane created a few openings in the finale with Fernando Moke going close. The biggest chance came in the sixth minute of added time. The ball reached the Liversedge penalty area and the angle opened up for Morris. The prolific striker put his foot through the ball and it was heading for the top corner until Dobbs dived with his lefthand to divert it over the crossbar.
Liversedge Thackley
1 2
LIVERSEDGE remained in relegation danger after a last-gasp goal earned Thackley a 2-1 win at
Clayborn on Saturday. Alan Colquhoun’s men were seconds away from going above Nostell Miners Welfare in the Toolstation NCEL Premier Division, but a Joe Brown stole all the points for Thackley. It was another improved performance by Sedge and a Mitchell Pearson cross was headed home by Andy Wood after just 12 minutes. Pearson and Brook Newton both had chances to double the lead, but Thackley goalkeeper Ed Hall kept them out. Thackley equalised on the hour when former Farsley youngster Tom Dugdale’s free kick was deflected past Sam Dobbs. A draw appeared likely until a Mark Truman cross was latched onto by former Bradford City striker Joe Brown and the latter scored a dramatic winner.

Hightown thrash Town to keep winning streak SPEN VALLEY LEAGUE HIGHTOWN JETS maintained their unbeaten run in the SPEN VALLEY MEMORIAL TROPHY with an 11-0 mauling of Savile Town. Kyle Kershaw and Nathan Clarke both netted hat-tricks, with goals from Dean Comins (two), Ryan Haynes, James Mortimor and Ryan Foster completing the scoring and ensuring the Jets stay top of Group B, with five wins from five matches. In the same group Howden Clough edged local rivals Fox and Hounds Batley 5-3 in a high-scoring thriller. Paul Beaumont, Sam Hetherington and Tynan Neagle netted for the visitors. But replies from Joe Armitage, Corey Starkey, Simy Moore, Lewis Boddy and Ryan Kerracher secured the points for Howden Clough – who have kept pace with the league leaders. Inter Batley remain rooted to the bottom of Group B following a 2-0 defeat at secondplace Palestino. George Healey kept top spot and their unbeaten record in Group A with a hardfought 3-1 win at basement club Cleckheaton Sporting. Benho Aparicio was the star of the show with a hat-trick, with Sporting netting a consolation through Liam Roadknight. In the same group Norfolk claimed the local bragging rights and three points with a 3-2 victory over Mount Pleasant. Eugene’s double and a single goal from Ismail Loonat completed their tally, with Zade Lunat (two) replying for the visitors. Smokin Aces were the only Heavy Woollen side in league action on Saturday as they slipped to a 4-1 defeat to Bradford Athletic in the PREMIER DIVISION. Mohammed Seedat scored the Aces only goal and they remain one point adrift in the relegation places, after Whitburn Athletic secured an unlikely draw at second-placed Route 1 Rovers.

Llewellyn hits Hall Green for six OVERTHORPE SPORTS UNDER-13s twice battled from being behind at Hall Green United to run out comfortable 12-5 winners. The hosts played well in the first half with their big, burly centre forward creating havoc in the Sports defence. Hall Green opened the scoring early but Alex Stonefield equalised with the first of his five-goal haul with a neat finish. Stonefield then latched onto an excellent through ball from Brad Llewellyn to make it 2-1. An unfortunate own goal
from Max Chadderton saw Hall Green level before they regained the lead following a long-range shot. Llewellyn then equalised with the first of his personal tally of six goals, Stonefield made it 4-3 before the home side equalised on the stroke of half-time. The Sports took instant control from the restart with three quick goals, two from Stonefield and one to Llewellyn which knocked the stuffing out of the home side. A much-improved secondhalf defensive effort from Joe Longstaffe and Callum Binns in particular, with Luke
Halford and Chadderton also prominent, kept the visitors in control. Brodie Haigh, Henry Loney and Georgia Jewitt were also working hard in midfield with Connah Megson making a few darting runs down the left wing. Llewellyn added a further two with Megson also getting on the scoresheet before Hall Green added their fifth with the goal of the game with a superb left-foot shot which gave Sports keeper Nathan Hawker no chance. Llewellyn added two further goals, including a penalty, to end the scoring at 12-5.

HECKMONDWIKE CYCLE SPEEDWAY club started their season on a high on Sunday with a 82-68 win against a strong Northumbria Vikings team. Heckmondwike knew this was going to be a hard first match, but with a good team line-up, one of the biggest in years, the hosts proved that they have what it takes to win matches. Young riders Adam Watson (18+1) and Pawel Idziorek (19+1) both rode extremely well. While the returning Jake Wood showed that he still has what it takes with a haul of 10+1 points. Heckmondwike stalwart Darren Kent put in an excellent performance, also scoring highly, and new team member Mick Knowles proved his worth with Richard Wells making the line-up, and Laura Watson and Chris Summersgill brought in as reserves. The home side had nearly a full team for the junior match. But with Newcastle bringing no juniors this meant a 62-0 win for the hosts. Tom Whitwam scored a maximum 16 points whilst Will Naylor (14), Declan Summersgill (12), Harvey Wells (12), Ben Summersgill (10) and Bella Naylor (10) completed the scoring. Heckmondwike travel to Stockport for their next match on Sunday and training continues on Wednesday nights from 7.30pm at Firth Park.

THREE tries in the final 10 minutes secured Halifax their first home victory of the season, but they were made to work hard by a determined Dewsbury side. The start was scrappy with both sides struggling for consistency. Dewsbury created the first scoring chance in the seventh minute when Anthony Thackeray put a high kick into the corner. Shane Grady rose highest but the Dewsbury centre just couldn’t quite manage to gather the ball. The game was tied at 0-0 just
after the half-hour mark when two successive penalties gave Halifax their best attacking opportunity of the game. James Saltonstall went very close for Halifax before he was harshly penalised by the referee for an attempted double movement. It was a costly penalty as Thackeray gave a great short pass to Luke Adamson who broke the line. Adamson did well to attract the full-back before getting away an outstanding offload to Karl Pryce who scored in the corner. Kieran Hyde added the extra two points. Dewsbury’s lead lasted just three minutes as Paul Jackson knocked on straight from the restart to give Halifax great field position. It was a chance they didn’t
waste as Richard Moore offloaded to Scott Murrell. He passed the ball wide to Ben Heaton, who cut back inside and burst through a gap in the Dewsbury defence to score. Steve Tyrer landed the conversion to level the scores. In the 39th minute Halifax threw the ball wide but their efforts to score became their downfall as Thackeray intercepted a Saltonstall pass before
racing 95 metres to touch down. Hyde converted to give Dewsbury a deserved 12-6 lead at the interval. Halifax came out for the second half and were clearly pumped up right from the start as they made 80 metres from their first set of six. In the 58th minute Halifax got the reward their improved performance deserved as Ben Johnston threw the ball wide and Saltonstall found the space to break through the Rams defence to score. Tyrer levelled the scores. With just eight minutes remaining Halifax found themselves behind again as Hyde kicked a drop-goal from 35 metres. It was an outstanding effort given the heaviness of the pitch.
That was as good as it got for Dewsbury though as Halifax turned on the style. The impressive Saltonstall made a fantastic break before throwing a great pass out wide to Gareth Potts who finished brilliantly in the corner. Tyrer missed the conversion but Halifax had a slender 16-13 lead with just six minutes remaining. In the 77th minute Halifax forced a goal line drop-out. Dewsbury tried to hammer the ball into touch but Tyrer reacted fantastically to claim the ball and run 10 metres to score. Halifax sealed the victory in the final minute as Luke Ambler hit a lovely inside pass from Johnston before racing fully 40 metres to score. Tyrer nailed the touchline conversion.

DEWSBURY MOOR returned to the National Conference League in style to record a convincing 48-10 win over Heworth at Elmpark Way. After a number of years absent from the elite summer league, Moor made no mistake in their return as they proved too hot to handle for a game Heworth side. The damage was done by half-time with the Maroons racing into a commanding 24-0 lead at the break. Heworth threatened a brief fightback early in the second stanza but Moor returned to their flowing play to seal a resounding victory.
The first half belonged to Moor as they raced out of the blocks, with tries coming thick and fast. James Eatherly powered over early in the proceedings, with Peter Robinson soon following him over the whitewash. Teenage half-back Tom Kaye continued to cause problems in the York side’s defence and raced in for a quick-fire double. Bradley Foster had a 100% success rate with the boot, adding four successful conversions to give his side a 24-0 lead at halftime. The hosts gave a brief comeback as the second stanza got under way. Lewis Worthington and Ross Varley crossed in quick succession and a single conversion from Joe Deighton brought the home side back into the game. It was a setback for Moor but they soon returned to form and it wasn’t long before
Andrew Robinson showed pace and power to blast over for a second-half hat-trick. The versatile Bartley O’Brien showed a clean pair of heels on his way over the tryline. And the scoring continued when winger George Croisdale proved a handful, brushing off several would-be defenders on his way to a four-pointer. Brad Foster added a further two conversions to round off the scoring. The Maroons make their home debut tomorrow (Sat) when Hunslet Club Parkside visit Heckmondwike Road (2.30pm). • Dewsbury Moor A rounded off their Division Six East season with a narrow 16-10 victory over Doncaster Toll Bar A. A number of former players came out of retirement to guide the Moor second string past a youthful Toll Bar outfit. The victory ensured Dewsbury finished in third place.

THORNHILL TROJANS marked their return to the National Conference League with a comfortable victory over Crosfields. Thornhill punished Crosfields from the start of the game when the Warrington team knocked on from the kick-off. The Trojans pressed from the scrum and Joel Gibson sent out a perfect pass which found winger Mindaugas Bendikas, who went over for an unconverted score early on. It was only minutes later when Gibson combined with Danny Ratliffe to carve Crosfields wide open down the middle of the park to put the supporting Jake Wilson over for a try. Thornhill came out for the second half restored to 13 players and looked to wrap the game up. This they did almost straight away when Danny Ratcliffe chipped the ball forward to score an unconverted try. Liam Morley then showed creativity to break clear and put Gibson diving over for a try to complete his hat-trick. Gibson converted. A drop-goal from Gibson effectively sealed a fantastic victory. Celtic lose thriller JUNIOR RUGBY LEAGUE Newsome Panthers Under-14s Dewsbury Celtic Under-14s
44 36
DEWSBURY CELTIC UNDER-14s were edged 44-36 in a high-scoring thriller at Newsome Panthers on Sunday. Having been victorious in the opening round last week Celtic got off to a fantastic start when, after gaining possession from the kick-off, they opened their account within a minute with a try from Ethan O’Hanlon on the first set. The home side drew level immediately before Adam Denton collected a cross field kick on the last from Heaton to cross the whitewash for Celtic’s second on seven minutes. The Green and Whites looked strong and inventive going forward and soon posted a third when Cameron Berry scooted from a tap penalty from close range. Heaton added the extras. Unfortunately Celtic could not match their efforts in attack on defensive duties and they let the home side in with three consecutive tries as the Panthers went marauding repeatedly down the left hand flank. On 21 minutes though, Conor Appleyard received the ball from a clever restart and finished off with a try after some blistering pace. The Panthers added another score on the stroke of half-time leaving the score at 24-18 to the home side at the break. Three minutes into the second period prop Jacob Carr powered his way over the line with four defenders in attendance for a try. The home side yet again prised open the Celtic defence with ease and ran in two consecutive scores in five minutes to open up a 10-point advantage. Liam Metcalf reduced the deficit to just six points when he penetrated the tight Newsome defence with an excellent debut try. Heaton added the extras before Celtic conceded another quick score at the other end with yet more poor defence. With the final whistle approaching, Celtic hearts were lifted when Heaton stole the ball in the opposition’s red zone and scampered over under the sticks for an opportunist try. Heaton’s conversion took the scores to 40-36 with just minutes remaining. Celtic looked to seal a last-minute victory with a clever play but were unable to get over the advantage line and the opposition regained possession in the dying seconds to go in at the corner for the final score.

TWO late tries ensured Batley Bulldogs were denied a win by Bradford Bulls in a stunning game at the Fox’s Biscuits Stadium. Ryan Shaw kicked off the scoring for the Bulls on four minutes, but Batley fought back quickly with a try from Shaun Squires. The home side held firm for most of the first period, but were undone by Jake Mullaney on the stroke of halftime and his converted try took the Bulls 14-6 ahead at the break. However, the Bulldogs produced a stirring second-half fightback, going ahead on 54 minutes after quickfire tries from Joe Chandler and Keegan Hirst. Cain Southernwood kicked a drop goal to make it 19-14 with minutes to go, but the former Bull missed a penalty goal soon after and the visitors took advantage. of margins. The 2,223-strong crowd were treated to an explosive start, with early runs from Ulugia and Batley forward Alex Rowe whipping those in attendance into a frenzy. But the Bulls, playing down the slope at Mount Pleasant, dampened home spirits with a try on four minutes through Shaw. Lee Gaskell strode his way through Bulldogs’ right edge and showed great composure to move the ball inside for the former Barrow centre to stroll in. He converted his own try, but the Bulldogs responded well. A penalty gave them field position and Squires pounced on a grubber from Alastair Leak in the left corner. Cain Southernwood then landed the difficult conversion before the Bulls lurched into action. Shaw kicked a penalty goal on 14 minutes to make it 8-6, then Batley’s resulting kick-off went out on the full and the Bulls took charge of the match. Adam Henry went close but fumbled a Gaskell chip, before Mullaney flew 40 metres following a clever set-piece from the base of a scrum, but Jordan Grayston pulled off a last-ditch tackle to deny the Australian a certain try. Ulugia went close and Williams also
had a chance on the half-hour, but Mullaney finally broke Batley’s resistance on the stroke of half-time. Ryan Shaw kicked through and the former Salford full-back put the ball down under a heap of bodies to make the score 14-6 to the Bulls at half-time. The second period suffered a slow start, but Wayne Reittie fired the game back into life on 49 minutes, charging downfield to hand the hosts some momentum, and Joe Chandler proved to be the eventual beneficiary, bundling his way over soon after on the back of a sustained spell of pressure from the Bulldogs. And before the crowd had time to catch their breath, the hosts were ahead. Keegan Hirst forced his way over to hand the home side the lead for the first time, sending the Batley faithful into raptures. Southernwood then continued his perfect record with the boot to make it 18-14 to the Bulldogs on 54 minutes. The entire Batley XIII battled valiantly to hang on to their lead and Ulugia was hurled into touch by a superb tackle from Johnny Campbell before Southernwood kicked a dropgoal to take his side five points ahead with just 10 minutes left on the clock.
SHAW CROSS SHARKS fell to their second defeat in a row in a high-tempered 18-6 loss against Elland at Leeds Road. The game was marred by ill-discipline which saw three players sin-binned. The hosts were looking to bounce back from their opening-day defeat and looked much more organised in the early exchanged. However it wasn’t long
before the home team was breached and found themselves 6-0 down inside 10 minutes. Andrew Shickell broke away down the middle and powered his way across the goal line. Philip Taylor converted. The Sharks regained their composure and looked solid for the next few sets. The stability served the home team well and on 19 minutes they drew level, with Curtis Sidebottom finishing off a well-executed set. Danny Flowers, who had an outstanding game, kicked
the goal to bring Shaw Cross level. Elland regained the front foot and on the half-hour mark they retook the lead with Shickell getting his second try of the game. The second half sparked a more intense encounter as just after the hour mark Elland’s Cayci Pearson was sin-binned for a dangerous elbow on Matthew Byatt. Elland went in for a try just after the incident took place but it was brought back and Pearson was shown a yellow card for his challenge.
Five minutes later tempers flared again as Jack Gledhill reacted to a high tackle from Taylor. Gledhill threw the ball in Taylor’s face before the Elland player threw a punch which connected with the Shaw Cross man. The officials sent both players to the sin-bin. Two minutes later the game was all but finished with Elland going over in the left corner to deliver the knockout blow. Chris Dyson completed a sweeping move to get in down the left side. The resulting goal was

Rams want cup run
Dewsbury dig deep in Aussie Morrison targets big club draw Workington REWARD: Dewsbury are aiming for a cup run and a potential tie with Super League opposition, much like last year’s tie with Wigan
By Gerard Priestley Sports Reporter sport@thepressnews.co.uk
THE MAGIC of the Challenge Cup will not be lost on Dewsbury Rams, according to coach Glenn Morrison. The Tetley’s Stadium chief is taking the competition extremely seriously as his side embark on a round four home tie with Newcastle Thunder on Sunday (3pm). The sides may play in two different competitions, but none of that will matter when the Rams take on Newcastle at the weekend. Both coaches, Glenn Morrison and Stanley Gene, have enjoyed illustrious playing careers themselves and the proud history of the cup is not lost on either of them, as they look to get their respective teams in to next week’s fifth round draw. Former Bradford Bulls and Wakefield Trinity Wildcats star Morrison is expecting a difficult game for his Kingstone Press Championship team against a Newcastle side who have been brought to life by Gene since he took over the reins in 2014.
“It’s been a mixed bag of results for us recently, we played Halifax at the weekend in an extremely tough game and then we travelled to Workington on Wednesday before then facing Newcastle, so it’s going to be a hard week and a real test for us,” said Morrison.
“They are an extremely good and strong side. We played them in a pre-season friendly and I sent our second team and they dealt with them pretty easily. Stan (Stanley Gene) has them playing a good game, we can’t afford to take them lightly.” Morrison, who also played for
Parramatta Eels and the North Queensland Cowboys before making a name for himself in England, says that last year’s defeat by Wigan Warriors in round four has sparked a desire in his side to go one better this year. “Being an Aussie, when you think of English rugby, you think of the Challenge Cup, you want lower league teams playing the top teams, that’s the magic of it,” said Morrison. “Playing Wigan last year was fantastic, it was a sell-out crowd and everyone commented on what a good game it was on and off the field. We pushed them for 60 minutes before they took control. The lads really enjoyed it and they want a repeat this time out.” In a revised format for 2015 Super League clubs have a staggered entry into the Challenge Cup this season, with the bottom four sides entering in round five and the top eight introduced in round six. This means in order to have a chance to face an elite league giant such as Wigan Warriors again, the Rams will have to win two more rounds than they did last season, when they met Shaun Wane’s side in a fourth-round tie.
Fozard joins Batley on loan BATLEY BULLDOGS have signed St Helens hooker Matty Fozard on a one-month loan deal. Fozard, 20, will link up with the Fox’s Biscuits Stadium club with immediate effect and there is no recall option on his loan. The young pivot, who played three times for Wales under John Kear at the 2014 European Championships, has made just one appearance for the Super League champions, deputising in his side’s Easter Monday clash with Widnes in 2014. He is expected to boost a Bulldogs squad hit by a number of injuries – with half-back Scott Leatherbarrow, centre Ayden Faal and full-back James Craven all ruled out with long-term problems. Kear said: “Alistair Leak had to play 80 minutes against Bradford and I thought he was outstanding, but you can’t expect a player to do that every week. “He made 55 tackles in the game and was fantastic for us, but we need to lighten that burden.” The Bulldogs travel to Wakefield’s Bell Vue Stadium on Sunday (2pm) to take on amateur side Normanton Knights in the fourth round of the Challenge Cup. It is a ground very familiar to Batley coach John Kear, who was in charge of Wakefield Trinity Wildcats for six years. However, the former Super League coach admits the opposition are somewhat of an unknown quantity. He said: “It isn’t the first time we have played an amateur club in this competition, we played Kells last year. “They were a division below Normanton and they gave us a real run for our money.
CHAMPION DEAL: Matty Fozard has joined Batley Bulldogs on a month’s loan from St Helens In fact I think they were the better team for the first half. “We need to go into the game with the right mentality and give them the respect we would give any other team. We will prepare as if we were playing anyone else. “It is a bit like the Bradford game in reverse. That was a full-time team in the Bulls against our part-time squad, whereas we are the semi-professionals this time facing the amateurs. “There is an element of pressure and expectation on us and we want to progress, because this is a competition I love and it offers great financial returns.”
Kear says he is likely to rotate his squad for the Challenge Cup tie, with the remainder of his 25-man squad likely to feature against the Knights. “At the moment I know very little about them, I watch a lot of amateur rugby and know the stand-out players they have from that,” he continued. “We will look at their recent games, including their loss against Myton and win over Oulton in the last round, and try to familiarise myself with them and their strengths and weaknesses and what to exploit. “Bell Vue is a great stadium and it is great for the players to get a chance to play at such a venue. “I have some great memories there because I spent six years of my life at Wakefield, I just hope I turn into the right changing rooms.” The coaching staff were due to assess a couple of players at training through the week – with prop forward Alex Rowe expected to be rested for the cup tie. “I have rotated the squad so far this season because I know we have 25 quality players,” Kear added. “It is a long season and when you include the Challenge Cup and hopefully the playoffs you are looking at 30 to 35 games in a year. “By the end of the weekend all players will have featured in a competitive game. “For Tom Thackray and Brad Day, who have both been in our 18-man squads, it is a chance to get a good run out and hopefully give me a selection headache for the next Championship game.”
DEWSBURY RAMS put in a gritty display to come from behind and beat Workington 31-18 in a re-arranged fixture at Derwent Park on Wednesday. The long mid-week journey to Cumbria was always going to a big ask for Glenn Morrison’s men as they embarked on a busy period in their season. And it was the home side who began on top, storming into an early lead when Sam Forrester raced in on seven minutes and Carl Forber converted. In an error-strewn opening 20 minutes for the Rams, Workington took full advantage and Forber’s boot put them 8-0 up following an indiscretion. It took Dewsbury 27 minutes to get on the board and they turned to a familiar source to provide it. Kieran Hyde’s grubber kick to the in-goal pinballed off a number of players and centre Shane Grady was on hand to touch down. Hyde converted to bring the visitors within two points. The Rams’ discipline continued to hamper their progress and once again Forber took full advantage, kicking a penalty goal to edge his side further ahead. Dewsbury did eventually hit the front as half-time approached, neat work from Anthony Thackeray gifting Luke Adamson the space to score his second for the club in only his third appearance. Hyde added the extra two to give the visitors a 12-10 lead at the break. The Rams started the second half as they had ended the first and were soon on the scoreboard again. Winger Dalton Grant broke through the Workington defence and stand-off Matty Wildie was in support to race in for his first try in the red, amber and black. Hyde converted to put Dewsbury two tries ahead. The game continued to be a real battle and Workington reduced the deficit when Marc Shackley burst through and Forber converted to bring his side within two points. But it would prove as close as the home side would get, as the Rams put in a professional finish to seal the victory. There was an element of fortune for Dewsbury’s next try. A kick through saw Workington’s Forrester and Theerapol Ritson collide, leaving Hyde with the easiest of touch downs. Hyde converted to reestablish his side’s eight point advantage. But after Dewsbury had conceded another penalty right in front of their own uprights, Forber was on hand to kick the simple goal. The game remained on a knife edge as first Tom Hemingway broke through but Town saw out the danger, before Workington pressured the visitors’ tryline to no avail. Instead it was the away side who got the all-important breakthrough. Hemingway missed an attempted drop-goal from acting half, but the Rams hooker made no mistake with his second attempt as he added a crucial one-pointer with seven minutes to go. Both sides pressed as they looked for the game-clinching score. But the game was sealed with three minutes to spare when Town full-back Jack Murphy did brilliantly to save a Rams 4020, before throwing a loose pass in goal which Aaron Brown pounced on to score. Hemingway took over the kicking duties to add the extra two and seal the game.
