Anger over claims collections could switch to once every THREE WEEKS By Staff Reporters CONSERVATIVES in Kirklees fear that regular fortnightly waste collections could be consigned to the dustbin next year. Tory leader Coun David Hall (Heckmondwike) has demanded assurances from the Labour-run Cabinet over the future of refuse services after it was revealed that many households will go three weeks without a collection over Christmas.
Currently domestic grey and green wheelie bins are emptied on alternate weeks – but Tories fear the “inadequate” three-week festive collection schedule could be made permanent next year. Coun Hall spoke out after responses from Labour Cabinet members to questions at the last full council meeting. Council officials have denied looking at moving to a cost-cutting threeweekly collection schedule, but refused to rule it out if budgets were
squeezed still further. The claims come in a week when central government announced that local authorities in England are to be allowed to raise council tax by up to 5.99 per cent next year. That would see the average annual council tax bill for a Band D property rise by £95. Many households already struggle to cope with having their bins emptied once every two weeks, and the
