By Staff Reporters A WOMAN was left with horrific facial wounds after a racial attack in Batley.

The 32-year-old was walking along Lady Ann Road when three men approached her at 6.45am on Tuesday, October 31, at first asking her “for a light”.

The trio of thugs hurled verbal abuse at her before pushing her to the floor and kicking her as she walked close to a tunnel which links the road to the Batley Mill Village complex.

The suspects – who left the victim with serious facial injuries – were described by police as Asian males.

Police took action this week after the victim shared details of her ordeal on social media, accusing officers of not being interested in her plight and refusing to investigate the attack as a racially-motivated incident.

Her post was later removed from Facebook.

Officers are now appealing for anyone with any information to come for-

Det Insp Mark Atkinson of Kirklees CID said: “This was a

terrible incident and one which left the victim with very serious injuries. We have been in regular contact with her to enable us to investigate the incident fully.

“I would like to appeal to members of the public who have witnessed the incident or have any information to come forward and assist with our investigation.”

KIRKLEES Council have saved almost £1m by transferring unwanted buildings to community groups – and that figure is set to grow.

Handing over premises to volunteers has so far saved the council £875,000 in maintenance and repairs, with 14 transfers having taken place and a further seven close to completion.

Another 18 are underway, while 12 more assets are being considered for transfer.

The asset transfer scheme started a number of years ago, with a new policy approved in March.

Community centres in Chickenley, Howden Clough and Soothill have since been handed over to volunteers, while the former Dewsbury Museum is close to being transferred to the Friends of Dewsbury Park Mansion community group.

A deal to take over Red House Museum in Gomersal fell through when the council decided to put it on the market instead.

Paul Kemp, director of economy, regeneration and culture, admitted that the council had more buildings than it can afford to run.

He said that early asset transfers had given the council a better understanding of which community groups could run a council building properly.

Mr Kemp also said that there were restrictions on all asset transfers which allowed the council to take back the premises and inspect them to ensure they were being properly maintained.

He said: “I’m very clear that this isn't about getting rid of buildings to community groups.

“I will only recommend a transfer if there's a sustainable plan, otherwise we are failing the council and the community group.”

NORTH KIRKLEES: Dewsbury man Sebastian Brooke pleaded not guilty to two charges of assault and one of criminal damage in a case involving his girlfriend.

The 36-year-old is said to have lost his temper after his partner spilt Coca Cola on his phone in the early hours of October 30.

He allegedly grabbed her and punched her in the leg before flipping the sofa upside down while she was still on it.

Brooke is accused the previous day of wrapping a bathroom chord around his on-off girlfriend’s neck, punching her in the nose and spitting at her. Brooke, of Ravens Lodge in Dewsbury, will appear in court again on February 14. Sheard calling time Heckmondwike’s Labour stalwart will retire for 2019 poll

By Steve Martyn KIRKLEES Council leader David Sheard will step down in 18 months.

Coun Sheard (Lab, Heckmondwike) has confirmed he will not be seeking re-election when his current term ends in May 2019.

His seat will not be up for election next year, and Coun Sheard said: “My four-year term comes to an end in May 2019, whilst I still have the same commitment and beliefs I

believe we have to give youth a chance to come forward, so I have decided not to stand again.

“That does not mean I will lose interest or stop campaigning for what I believe in.”

Coun Sheard has been a councillor since 1982, apart from a three-year break between 1992-5.

He was elected leader in 2014 following the departure of Mehboob Khan and has overseen drastic budget cuts and service reductions due to

No jail for child porn man A MIRFIELD man caught in possession of more than 100 indecent images of children has been given a suspended sentence.

Sebastian Taylor’s home was searched on December 1 last year, with police seizing three laptops and a hard drive as well as other items.

Officers found 28 Category A images (the most serious), 42 Category B images and 41 Category C images.

Moving images were also found, ranging from 27 seconds to a 45-minute video.

Taylor, 35, had made online searches for pre-teens – some images included children as young as five.

Taylor, of West Royd Avenue, appeared before Leeds Crown Court on Tuesday where he admitted three charges of making indecent images.

The court heard that he had no previous convictions and had never been in trouble.

The probation service assessed him as being a low risk of re-offending.

He was sentenced to 12 months in prison, which was suspended for two years, with 50 rehabilitation activity days and 150 hours of unpaid work.

He must also register as a sex offender for 10 years.

DEWSBURY: A 21-year-old man has denied charges following a row with his father over money. Adil Hussain appeared at Kirklees Magistrates’ Court where he pleaded not guilty to a charge of threatening behaviour during the alleged incident on May 17.

Hussain, of The Oval, was granted unconditional bail before his trial on February 1.

College’s cash crisis Kirklees chiefs told to come up with better financial plan

By Staff Reporters KIRKLEES College could face having to make cuts if it does not become more financially stable.

The college has applied for help from the Education and Skills Funding Agency (EFSA), which says they need to come up with a new spending plan if they want extra financial support.

College chiefs have until January to revise their financial recovery plan after they were issued with a ‘Notice to Improve’ by the EFSA. They will also have to meet with government officials on a monthly basis so that the EFSA can review management accounts.

Kirklees College has spent several million pounds on two new

centres in Dewsbury, including a purpose-built site due to open next year on Bradford Road.

Further plans involve transforming the iconic Pioneer House in the town centre.

The EFSA said the college has “inadequate financial health” – which local officials have attributed to to funding cuts and longterm debts.

A college spokesman said: “Last year, Kirklees College was impacted upon very badly by further reductions in funding, combined with increasing pension costs.

“The college has a long-term debt which is higher than the norm due to investment in its estate in 2010, and managed this very well over years of continued funding cuts until last year, when

the cumulative effect became too great.

“College senior managers recognised the impact of this on its financial position and have been working proactively with the ESFA on a proposal for funding support – but this has not been approved in its current form.

“The college now needs to make substantial savings as part of a formal recovery plan.

“As a result of its financial position, the ESFA has published a Notice to Improve to Kirklees College.

“This is in line with the Department for Education’s published Intervention Policy.

“The college’s aim is to develop and deliver its offer of technical and professional education for

the communities and businesses of Kirklees and is confident that the implementation of the recovery plan will ensure that the college is sustainable to the future.”

Principal Marie Gilluley said: “The senior team, supported by the governing body, are currently working on the formal recovery plan which will be shared with the ESFA in January 2018.

“We will ensure that the steps being proposed address the required improvements and are in the best interests of the college and its communities as well as ensuring the long-term stability of the high quality provision of the college.”

The financial notice does not relate to teaching standards, with the college being rated ‘good’ by Ofsted in its last inspection.

Female PCSOs ‘assaulted’ A CHICKENLEY man appeared in court on Monday accused of assaulting two police community support officers.

The female PCSOs approached Daniel Smith last Friday outside Mecca Bingo on Dewsbury Retail Park but he allegedly became aggressive and started to punch and kick the officers.

The 26-year-old, of Hazel Close, was wanted for five offences of shoplifting in the

Kirklees area.

Smith allegedly stole biscuits and chocolate from Tesco on Leeds Road, Dewsbury, between October 11 and November 15.

He denied five counts of shop theft and two assaults before Kirklees Magistrates’ Court.

Smith was granted unconditional bail but must stay out of the Tesco store until his trial at the same court on February 15.

Paula tells minister Hunt to get move on

By Zoe Shackleton MP Paula Sherriff has urged Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt to visit Dewsbury and District Hospital sooner rather than later.

Last week Mr Hunt agreed to come and see the impact that reconfigurations and downgrades are having in Dewsbury and Huddersfield – a year after she first asked him.

Miss Sherriff has this week highlighted problems at local hospitals in a letter to the Health Secretary in an attempt to fastforward his visit.

The Labour MP wrote: “In your response to me in the House on Wednesday, you said that on your visit you expect to see 8,300 more people are being treated within four hours at my local hospital (Dewsbury and District Hospital run by Mid Yorkshire Hospitals Trust), where there are 42 more

doctors and 56 more nurses than 2010.

“What you omitted from that reply is that the same Trust was last month given a ‘requires improvement’ rating by the CQC with staffing shortages and overcrowding found to be a risk to patient safety.

“You also failed to mention that the latest figures released by Mid Yorkshire Hospitals Trust show the equivalent of 195 vacancies for registered nurses.

“With plans also underway to close Huddersfield Royal Infirmary’s A&E and replace it with a small urgent care centre – the fact is that the whole of Kirklees stands to be left without full A&E provision.”

Miss Sherriff went on to say that Mr Hunt’s visit is “overdue” but that now is an “appropriate time” to see “the depth of feeling on this from local people”.

OBITUARY: Robert Scaife CBE ROYAL British Legion stalwart Charles Robert Scaife (pictured) has died, aged 82.

The Birstall-born former Royal Air Force serviceman, known as Robert, became a member of the Birstall branch of the RBL in 1958 just days after he was demobbed.

He went on to serve as membership secretary, standard-bearer, treasurer, chairman and president of the branch before becoming the first National Serviceman to take up the post of RBL national chairman, holding the position from 1985-1989.

Mr Scaife was a pupil at Healey School before he trained as a joiner and cabinet maker, then going on to work for Batley & Spen Council as well as working as a study manager for Spen Council and later Kirklees Council.

In 1988, he received a CBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list for his work at national level with the RBL. He had also been South and West Yorkshire RBL county chairman and president.

His duties took him and wife Margaret all over the world, and

News In Brief Drink driver involved in police chase NORTH KIRKLEES: A man has admitted drink driving after leading police on a car chase through Cleckheaton.

Jamie Colman, of Town Street in Dewsbury, appeared at Kirklees Magistrates’ Court where he pleaded guilty to charges of dangerous driving, driving while over the prescribed limit and resisting two police officers acting in the execution of their duty.

The 29-year-old was driving dangerously on Dewsbury Road, St Peg Lane and Brooke Street when he was arrested. He had 53 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath. The legal limit is 35.

Magistrates sent Colman to Leeds Crown Court for sentencing on December 11.

Kevin Gallagher allegedly took packets of Tetley Tea from the back of a vehicle while the driver was sleeping at an industrial park on Pheasant Drive on November 18.

Gallagher, of Partridge Crescent, Thornhill, was found with a Stanley knife, a torch and a walkie talkie when he was arrested.

Beauty business hit for second time in a week Legion needs new members BATLEY’S branch of the Royal British Legion could be in jeopardy because of a lack of members.

Peter Brierley, of the RBL, explained that there are just three or four active members of the branch, when there needs to be at least eight to be able to keep their work going.

With membership dwindling, Mr Brierley is encouraging people of all ages to join up – and they don’t need to have a service background.

He said: “You don’t have to be old and you don’t have to be an exserviceman or woman.

“We were well-supported on Remembrance Sunday. We have noticed over the last two or three years interest has grown with the First World War anniversaries.

“We have had a couple of contacts from there and we are looking for support from members elsewhere.”

The branch fundraise to support the RBL’s work in helping servicemen and women and their families.

News In Brief Phone hid in shower THORNHILL: A 67-year-old man appeared in court accused of filming a girl in the shower.

Brian Quarmby was at Kirklees magistrates facing five charges of voyeurism, as well as two of making an indecent image, relating to 94 photographs and four movies allegedly made of the girl. He is accused of recording images and movies for sexual gratification.

Magistrates heard that he had allegedly hidden an iPhone inside a box. The girl used the shower several times and noticed the box with holes cut into it.

The phone was allegedly connected to a laptop where the recordings were found.

Quarmby, of Thornhill, gave no indication of plea and will appear at Leeds Crown Court on December 15.

Ian, who has been one of the most frequent speakers to attend the Batley group over the past decade, will mix his fascinating facts with a smattering of humorous incidents which he manages to capture in his talks.

Ian, who was born in Keighley and attended the local grammar school, secured a special place in

the town's history because of the tremendous amount of research he has carried out into local history while working at the town’s reference library for more than 25 years.

The information he uncovered and the way he has used it to help the town stress its individuality by producing a great number of local history books has led to him being warmly

referred to as ‘Mr Keighley’, and he was awarded the MBE in 1999 in recognition of his services to local history.

Air Cadets’ role reversal is a winner for kids

OSSETT: A man has died after the car he was driving hit a wall.

Emergency services were called to Queens Drive at around 10pm on Monday following the crash, which involved a Peugeot car.

A 56-year-old man from the Horbury area was treated for his injuries but died at the scene.

Police are now appealing for witnesses – or anyone with any information – to contact PC 264 Wilson on 101.

Barking up a tree BIRKENSHAW: St Paul’s Church is hosting a Christmas tree festival with a difference.

Community groups and organisations have been challenged to decorate a tree to represent a popular Christmas song or carol.

The local dog walking group has been given the theme ‘Bark the Herald Angels Sing’ and their tree – alongside 25 others – will be on display in the festival from Friday December 8 to December 10.

MIRFIELD air cadets did their bit for Children in Need by swapping roles with each other for one night only. Staff and non-commissioned officers stood down for the night, while other cadets stepped into their roles.

Positions such as squadron commander, flight sergeant and corporal were all taken up by the younger cadets. They had to run their own evening programme for their fellow cadets, as well as dealing with routine administrative work, manning the telephones and running the canteen.

Kirkwood Xmas fair NORTH KIRKLEES: The Batley and Birstall support group for Kirkwood Hospice are getting set to host their ‘A Taste of Christmas’ event.

The fair will be held at Gomersal Park Hotel on Sunday November 26 from 2pm until 4pm.

There will be a chance to purchase Christmas gifts and cakes and visitors can win on the raffle and tombola stalls.

Windmill School choir are due to give a special performance during the event.

Tickets cost £6 and include a glass of wine and a plate of festive treats.

Cadets were even given the chance to “sponge the NCOs”. The established cadet NCOs were dressed down to t-shirts and shorts before having wet sponges thrown at them by the cadets.

Squadron commander Flt Lt Peter Doubell said: “I think everybody’s had tremendous fun this evening, and the temporary ‘staff’ certainly had their eyes opened about what running the squadron is really like – they did a good job, and drank coffee just like the real thing!” They raised £225 for Children in Need.

Bravery award for PC pair who caught Mair

By Zoe Shackleton THE TWO police officers who arrested MP Jo Cox’s armed killer have received medals for their bravery.

PCs Craig Nicholls and Jonathan Wright were awarded the Queen’s Gallantry Medal in the Birthday Honours list this year following their actions in chasing down Thomas Mair, the right-wing extremist who murdered Mrs Cox outside Birstall Library last June.

The pair were at Buckingham Palace last Thursday when the Prince of Wales presented them with their medals.

They said receiving the honour was “totally unexpected” and described it as “amazing”.

PC Wright said “it’s just day-to-day work” and admitted that they were just doing their jobs on the day of the attack.

Mair stabbed and shot Mrs Cox on June 16 before

attempting to flee the scene.

The officers responded to a sighting of Mair and were on patrol in Birstall when they spotted him walking along Leeds Road and followed him into a cul de sac. PC Wright said: “I opened the window and started shouting at him.

Craig said he had something in his hand.”

The officers told Mair to put his bag down before they got out of the vehicle and ran towards him.

“He then reached towards his belt and we’ve taken him to the floor,” he said.

Mair was subsequently found with a gun, a knife, and a bag of bullets.

Two weeks ago Bernard Kenny, who intervened to try and

Mr Kenny died in August after a short battle with cancer.

‘Offended’ drunk gets five months A LIVERSEDGE man has been jailed for five months following an attack in a nightclub.

Yanick Ngounou, of First Avenue in Hightown, was at Batley’s TBC club when he became aggressive because he thought he was being discriminated against.

The 30-year-old had been in the bar from midnight on July 15.

The row started at around 4.30am when staff refused to serve him more alcohol.

Ngounou felt that they did this because of his colour.

Prosecutor Andy Wills said: “William Graveling was working as a door supervisor when he was told by

the manager that there was a male inside kicking off, threatening and being abusive because they’d stopped serving him drinks.

“He was escorted from the premises but he turned around, armed him-

Ngounou had 27 previous convictions self with a smashed bottle in one hand and was aggressive.

“The door staff decided to seek safety within the entrance and shut the door, not letting him in or anybody else out for their protection.”

Police arrested Ngounou, but he grabbed a radio from an officer’s stab vest and attacked him and his colleague with it.

Officers took him to Huddersfield Police Station where he continued being violent and abusive.

Kirklees magistrates heard that he had 27 previous convictions, including several for assault.

He pleaded guilty to threatening behaviour, assault, three counts of assaulting a constable in the execution of his duty, assaulting a detention officer and criminal damage.

Ngounou was jailed for 20 weeks and will have to pay a £115 victim surcharge when he is released.

Online council account launched RESIDENTS could win an iPad by registering for a new ‘My Kirklees’ account.

Kirklees Council have developed the new online resource that will give people constant access to a range of council services all in one place and with one password.

Once signed up, residents will be able to view and manage their council tax account, check bin collection dates,

report missed bin collections and get updates, manage their Kirklees Neighbourhood Housing rent account, access information about housing benefit payments and view details of their ward and councillors.

Anyone who registers before midnight on December 8 and links it to either a council tax, rent or benefits account will be automatically entered into a

free prize draw for a new Apple iPad. Coun Graham Turner, cabinet member for resources, said: “The My Kirklees Account will allow citizens to access their account when and where they want, they won’t have to hang around on the telephone or make a trip to one of our customer service centres.” Register at https://my.kirklees.gov.uk.

Gang of robbers targeted elderly A TEENAGER has been sent to a young offender institution for his part in a spate of robberies in North Kirklees.

Eighteen-year-old Larry McCann targeted vulnerable and elderly people in their homes as part of a five-strong criminal gang.

Among those terrorised were two 89-year-old women in Batley and Gomersal and an 84-year-old man in Batley.

Leeds Crown Court heard that on May 1, the gang raided one of the 89-year-old victim’s homes while she was with her son, who suffers from multiple sclerosis.

He was knocked to the floor before his mother was also pushed over.

She landed face down, causing a lens to fall from her glasses and cut her nose.

McCann – caged Two of the intruders ransacked the bedrooms and fled the scene with £60 in cash, watches and a jewellery box.

A group of four men broke the conservatory window at the 84-year-old man’s house,

pushing him into a table and stealing £3,000.

The 89-year-old woman in Gomersal was forced to stay in her chair while the robbers searched her home.

Earlier this month McCann’s brother, 23-year-old Gerald, was jailed for eight years and four months in connection with the same incidents.

He admitted three robberies and possessing a phone in prison.

Three other juveniles – two 16 and one 17 – were detained for five years four months for their part in the robberies.

McCann, of St Mary’s Caravan Park in Laisterdyke, Bradford, admitted five robberies and was sentenced to six years and nine months in a young offender institute.

Residents sick of fly-tipping plague DISGRUNTLED residents have had enough of fly tipping problems at a disused mill in Dewsbury.

Pepper Royd Mill, on Pepper Royd Street in Eastborough, has become an eyesore for nearby home owners, with waste regularly dumped on the site.

George Morris and Derek Gibson, who live on nearby Upper Camroyd Street, said that the mill has been a magnet for fly tipping for the last 15 years.

Recently there has been an increased build-up of waste due to developers working on the mill.

Mr Morris said: “It needs boarding up and clearing up. The council need to issue the owners with a clear-up notice.

“But there seems to be no will to do anything about it. How long is it going to be like this?”

Mr Morris and Mr Gibson said that work had started to develop the mill, but they claimed residents had not been made aware of the proposed plans.

The pair agreed that it would be good for the area if the mill was turned into residential units.

“I think it would be great

Kirklees Council have confirmed that planning permission has been granted for the site.

According to the council website, proposals to demolish the existing buildings and erect 21 dwellings with associated parking and garages was given the go-ahead back in 2014 – but the original buildings are still there.

Mr Morris said that work on the mill seems to have stopped over the past few months, but the indus-

trial waste has been left on site.

A Kirklees Council spokesman said: “Pepper Royd Mills has been granted planning permission for redevelopment.

“If someone is looking for information about a proposed development then they should visit the council’s website in the first instance where you can search for addresses and planning permissions.

“This also includes details of the applicant or agent who may be able to provide information about what is happening on a specific site, once permis-

sion is granted, as it has been at Pepper Royd Mill.

“Anyone who is concerned about work being carried out in an unsafe or unapproved manner should contact the council by emailing planning. enforcement@kirklees.gov. uk so that we can investigate. The council is aware of an accumulation of waste on the site, which is privately owned.

“We have made the owner of the site aware of his obligation to make arrangements for the waste to be cleared from the site and will continue to monitor the situation.”

A MAN has been jailed for ignoring a ban on contacting his former partner.

Justin Littlewood was not allowed to speak to his ex or go to her Mirfield home due to a nonmolestation order which was made in August.

The 27-year-old ignored this and called the victim several times as well as sending her texts between September 5 and 15.

After Littlewood had contacted his ex, she showed screen shots of the messages on her mobile phone to the police and he was arrested.

Kirklees magistrates heard that the couple had been in a

relationship for three years and their baby daughter was born in the same month Littlewood’s former partner acquired the oneyear order.

Littlewood, however, claimed that the contact had been twosided.

His solicitor, Craig Sutcliffe, said: “His relationship with the victim had resumed and he’d been told that she’d sought the removal of the order and that it was no longer being enforced.”

Littlewood admitted the breach offence but said that his ex had been in regular contact with him.

He was jailed for 16 weeks and will have to pay a £115 victim surcharge when he is released.

Asbestos site for Cleck is planned PLANS to create an asbestos transfer station in Cleckheaton have been submitted.

Check Environmental Ltd have applied to change the use of a former stone cutting works at Brookside Works on Brick Street, off Moorside.

The company said in their proposals that “the process will simply be for individuals to bring asbestos to the site in small vehicles.”

They also outlined that the asbestos must be “wrapped properly and/or double bagged and sealed.”

If proposals are approved by Kirklees Council, the site would open from 7am-6pm Monday to Saturday.

The company added: “The asbestos waste will be received by trained staff and loaded into a container that is completely sealed. Once the container is full it will be collected by an HGV skip lorry and taken to landfill between the hours of 7am and 3pm Monday to Friday.”

There would be two HGV trucks based at the premises, which would take a skip to an asbestos site each morning. There would also be between two and four vehicles per day in the form of small delivery vans or transits.

Previous tenants Cleckheaton Stone Ltd were allowed to operate between 7am and 5pm.

New midnight bus service from Leeds to Batley and district A NEW late-night bus service will be launched in December.

Transport firm Arriva Yorkshire have confirmed that the 229 service which serves Birstall, Batley and Heckmondwike, will extend its operating hours.

The last bus will now leave Leeds Bus Station at midnight on Fridays and Saturdays starting from Friday, December 8.

Batley & Spen MP Tracy Brabin was one of the driving forces behind the new changes.

She said: “I am absolutely delighted Arriva have listened to suggestions and are going to provide a later bus service from Leeds to Birstall, Batley and Heckmondwike. Good public transport links are so important for residents to access the culture as well

as employment opportunities in Leeds. I hope local people will make good use of the service – I certainly will be!”

The new operating hours were recently agreed following feedback from Ms Brabin and trade union representatives.

Jon Croxford, area managing director for Arriva Yorkshire, said: “I’m pleased that we have been able

to deliver on this and hope it will be of some benefit to the local community.”

The bus company also runs latenight services from Leeds to Dewsbury on Fridays and Saturdays with the 202 and 203 services running until midnight.

The new service will arrive in Birstall at 00.32, Batley at 00.41, and Heckmondwike 00.51.

Driver throws carer and disabled man off bus

By Steve Martyn SUPPORT worker Samantha Wadkin was left seething after being asked to get off a bus with her disabled client following a fare mix-up.

Miss Wadkin was in Dewsbury Bus Station on Saturday lunchtime following a town centre shopping trip with her client, who has learning disabilities and communication problems.

The man has a special pass which allows him and a carer to travel for free on public transport.

But after boarding the 12.45pm 268A Dewsbury-to-Bradford service, she was rebuffed by the driver who didn’t appear to understand that the pass allowed two people to travel.

“I showed the driver and he processed the card, but then he asked me for my fare,” she explained.

“He said I should have told him

it was ‘plus one’ and he couldn’t put it through again. I was told I would have to pay £2.50 for me or get off the bus.”

Miss Wadkin had no money of her own with her and is not allowed to use her client’s money for herself.

The man was confused and

couldn’t understand why he had to get off the bus. She had to ask him three times before she could persuade him, and it left him in a distressed and agitated state.

“It should have been obvious to anyone that my client was not fit to travel alone and that I was

there to support him,” said Miss Wadkin.

“He is a young man and the card was clearly marked ‘concessionary’ but I was distracted and didn’t mention the plus one before it had been processed.

“Fortunately, he calmed down with reassurance. We had to wait 30 minutes for the next bus but we got home with no further problems.”

Arriva Yorkshire area managing director Jon Croxford said: “Firstly, I would like to apologise to our customer for any distress and inconvenience this incident may have caused.

“We have launched an internal investigation to understand what happened and will be making contact with the customer in the next few days once our investigation is complete.”

A small team has secured funding and sponsorship to create the event which will run from 5.30pm6.15pm on Wednesday November 29.

Coun Eric Firth (Dewsbury East) said: “We really wanted to do something for our town and we’ve done our best in the time available.

“Whilst it may not be the biggest event, it will have a real sense of community and Christmas spirit.”

Coun Darren O’Donovan (Dewsbury West) added: “We’re hoping to have a school choir join us, and children from local schools help with the switch on.

“We’ve not had a great deal of time to pull this off, and a very small budget, but the willingness of local people to bring it together and contribute time and energy has been overwhelming.”

Café Etienne on Wakefield Old Road is opening to serve tea, coffee and mince pies, and Roger the Ram will pose for pictures with children and families.

The evening is set to culminate with a festive community rendition of “Oh Christmas Tree” led by the Yorkshire Imperial Brass Band to kick-start Dewsbury’s Christmas season.

Brass band and choir combine PLENTY of wellknown numbers with Christmassy touches will be on the menu when the popular Hammonds Saltaire brass band and youngsters from Batley Parish Church get together in Batley Town Hall on December 2 for their 10th anniversary programme.

They have produced some of the best Batley concerts over the past decade, and with Morgan Griffiths conducting the band which has already secured a place in the national championships and Kate Delaney conducting the everengaging school choir it seems as though they will continue their remarkable popularity.

Among the band numbers which should move the audiences are the Die Fledermaus overture

by Strauss, The Little Drummer Boy, Frosty the Snowman and the Snow

Maiden.They will also be recapturing past memories with a total of 16 numbers including An English Christmas, Romance from the Carol Symphony and Mary's Boy Child.

HOUSANDS of people are expected to attend Heckmondwike’s biggest event of the year tomorrow (Sat).

HeckmondLIGHT will celebrate the town’s festive lights switch on, marking a tradition dating back to 1863.

As well as the official switch-on, celebrated with the Momentum Wheel of whirling fire, there will be illuminations galore, plus a whole host of fun-filled family activities.

In Green Park, people can explore the interactive artworks made from light in all its guises; from gas lamps, flames, fireworks, electric and LEDs. There will also be a nostalgic blast from the past with a re-conditioned light from The Frontier’s laser light show, which is set to impress crowds.

The fun starts from 3pm in the town’s indoor market hall, which is being transformed into the ‘Maze of Curiosity’. Explore the non-traditional winter wonderland and find unexpected artwork lurking around every corner. Inside the market hall there will be light projections, fun craft activities, live music plus a story from Santa Claus.

The event is organised by Heckmondwike Community Alliance and Creative Scene, which uses funding from Arts Council England via the National Lottery.

Simon Thirkill, chairman of the Heckmondwike Community Alliance and owner of the Blue Moon Café, said: “This is a big event for the town and one that everyone looks forward to. It will be a little bit special this year. We are expecting more than 2,000 people to turn out.

“The first-ever lights event took place in Heckmondwike in 1863, with gas lamps. Then electric lights were used in 1904. We believe we are the first place in Britain to hold an event using lights.”

He said the town area of Heckmondwike was one mile square and had a close-knit community of businesses, shops and residents.

He added: “We are looking forward to revealing the light from the Frontier laser light show. It was salvaged from a skip and been brought back to life.

“It was the light which would raise up and down above the dance floor.”

Nancy Barrett, director of Creative Scene, said: “This year we are telling the history of the illuminations through storytelling with the Myth, the Story, the Legend, told by Kay Douglas.

“We have international artist Tilen Sepic from Slovenia coming to create some illuminated clouds, which will stay on display in Heckmondwike’s Green Park over the winter.

A group of eight students from Batley School of Art will help create the clouds.

“We also have Bryan Tweddle who is a talented sculptor, who will create spectacular interactive lantern sculptures and is working with community groups and mentoring local artists.

“It is set to be a spectactular event.”

A super time in store UPERHEROES and Star Wars characters will be guests of honour as Birstall's Christmas lights are switched on.

Organised by Birstall Chamber of Trade, the fun switch-on event takes place on Tuesday evening.

Whilst Santa will be in his grotto as usual, Iron Man, Darth Vader, Storm Troopers, Ewoks, Luke Skywalker and Boba Fett will also be in attendance to keep the crowds entertained.

Victorian theme to lights festivities OSSETT is preparing for its most festive day of the year tomorrow – the Christmas lights switch-on.

On Saturday the town centre will be hosting its Victorian Christmas event, which concludes with the switch-on of the lights.

The day starts at around 10am, with a Victorian market in the precinct.

Throughout the day market stalls will be selling a range of goods, alongside fairground rides, donkey rides and there’s a chance to visit Santa in his Grotto.

Visitors will also get the chance to meet a variety of reptiles and birds of prey outside the Town Hall.

Street food vendors will be selling a range of food and drink, from hog roast to hot dogs, popcorn and mulled wine while you dance along to the live entertainment.

The lights are due to be switched on at 5.30pm, with the event finishing at around 6pm.

Come see the Snow Queen ST MARY’S Theatre Group are rehearsing for another fun-packed Christmas show.

The group are working hard to defeat an evil curse in their pantomime ‘The Snow Queen’ at St Mary’s Hall in Batley.

Of course, they can’t do it on their own. They need help from everyone in the audience, especially children, to counteract the spell cast by the evil Snow Queen.

Will she get her evil way and capture all the little children, or will she be overcome by her twin sister Princess Sunshine and her hapless but kind gang of helpers?

Santa Claus may also be able to come and help out again this year and give all the children in the audience a present.

Group chairman Stephen Walker said: “This year we have another fun-filled, great value show. It has been written by one of our members, Janet Walker, who has been working flat-out with all our other members to bring it all together.

“We have some great performers and other helpers who put their heart and soul into it. The younger performers love it and our audiences really appreciate them.”

Evening performances are at 7.30pm on Friday December 8 and Saturday December 9. Matinee performances are at 2.30pm on Saturday December 9 and

1.30pm on Sunday December 10.

With its colourful costumes, effervescent characters and catchy song list, Hairspray is the feel-good musical to end all others.

There wasn’t a single member of the soldout audience still sat in their seat by the end of Monday night.

But for all the fun and laughter that the musical brings, it has a serious underlying message – one which was portrayed appropriately without being too hard-hitting.

Set at a time when racial segregation was the norm, Hairspray tells poignantly the story of protagonist Tracy Turnblad using her new-found fame to fight for integration.

Tracy – played perfectly by Rebecca Mendoza – longs to be famous and dances her way onto the popular Corny Collins Show.

She wins the heart of the nation and teen idol Link Larkin (Edward Chitticks).

Forever in trouble at school, Tracy meets Seaweed (Layton Williams) in detention.

Seaweed is a dancer just like Tracy, but can't get on TV shows because of the colour of his skin.

The audience are taken through the story of their struggle, with hit songs such as Welcome to the 60s and The Nicest Kids In Town helping the tale along.

Tracy’s mum Edna, portrayed flawlessly by Matt Rixon, and dad Wilbur (Norman Pace) capture the hearts of the audience, while the teenager's best friend Penny and Seaweed do the same.

The underlying relationship strains between Tracy and Link resound in every teenager's mind, and it's a sigh of relief when they finally get together at the end.

Brenda Edwards (of X Factor fame) is sublime as Motorbouth Maybelle – her rendition of I Know Where I’ve Been nearly brought me to tears.

Ending tomorrow (Saturday), Hairspray is a must-see.

OSSETT TOWN missed the chance to move into the play-off places as they were comfortably beaten by Skelmersdale United.

Nathan Randell put the hosts in front on 22 minutes and the score remained at 1-0 until 17 minutes from time.

Callum Mahoney doubled Skelmersdale’s lead on 73 minutes before Andrew Owens sealed victory 11 minutes later with the home side’s third.

The defeat is Ossett’s first away from home in the league this season and their first loss in seven league games, however the Reds still sit just outside the play-off places.

Town have the chance to move into the top six tomorrow afternoon when they host Kendal Town at Ingfield (3pm). They will then face a much sterner test when they travel to Scarborough Athletic on Tuesday (7.45pm).

Dewsbury enjoying life in Huddersfield League DEWSBURY TOWN have moved to the top of Division Four in the Huddersfield and District League after a 3-1 win against Sporting CAV. Dewsbury previously competed in the Spen Valley League but entered the Huddersfield and District League this season after the former folded due to a lack of teams.

Town have won nine of their 11 games, losing one and drawing the other and sit top with two games in hand over second-placed Golcar United.

Dewsbury have only conceded two goals all season – scoring 59 – they face Cartworth Moor tomorrow afternoon.

Cleckheaton have also entered the Huddersfield and District League and jumped up to sixth place in Division Four after beating Kirkburton 3-2 on Saturday afternoon.

OSSETT ALBION got their first league point since the beginning of October as they brought an end to their six-game losing run.

However, the Unicorns were left devastated as a last-minute goal saw Kendal snatch a point and leave Ossett’s wait for a win extend another week.

Kendal were the livelier of the two sides for the first period of the game although Albion created some good chances thanks to the runs of Aidan Chippendale down the left flank.

In the 28th minute Kendal almost took the lead, a shot rattled the crossbar and Albion keeper Brett Souter did brilliantly to get across and stop the rebound crossing the line.

With just a minute remaining of the half Kendal went ahead as the ball fell to the feet of Daniel Penswick who curled it inside the far post.

Albion responded well at the start of the second half and controlled the tempo of the game.

However, the hosts still required a slight bit of luck to grab the equalising goal.

A curling corner from Chippendale avoided everyone in the area and went straight into the net.

Albion continued to press forward and it was a stunning goal from Chippendale that seemed to have won them the game.

Another tremendous run down the left was finished with a fierce shot that curled inside the near post from a tight angle.

Kendal grabbed their last-gasp equaliser from a corner when Martin Grundy rose above the defenders to head the ball home.

The Unicorns travel to Clitheroe tomorrow afternoon (3pm), where they will be hoping to secure their first win since October 3.

On Tuesday night Albion hosted Huddersfield Town Under-23s in a friendly game which finished 2-2.

LIVERSEDGE FC made it two wins from their last three league games as they eased past Albion Sports on Wednesday evening.

The result saw Sedge jump five places into 10th, however the Clayborners still sit well outside the play-off places.

Albion Sports had the first real chance of the match as the ball came into

the box from a corner kick, but the hosts were unable to capitalise.

At the other end Joe Walton was put through on goal but was thwarted by the Albion keeper.

From the resulting corner Liversedge took the lead as Andrew Wood rose to head the ball into the net.

Five minutes into the second half the away side should have doubled their lead as a shot hit the post before the rebound was put wide.

With 20 minutes remain-

ing Joseph Hitch finished off a great move by Sedge to give the visitors some daylight with a two-goal cushion.

In the closing stages the visitors were awarded a penalty.

Rhys Davies cooly dispatched to make it 3-0.

On Saturday afternoon a late fightback from Liversedge wasn’t enough as they went down 4-2 at home to Pontefract Collieries.

into half time.

Walton reduced the deficit to a single goal as he scored twice in an eightminute period.

With only seven minutes left on the clock Sedge went in search of the equaliser but conceded a fourth goal on 86 minutes.

Hey scored his second and Pontefract’s fourth to seal the victory for the visitors.

Liversedge are not in action again until Wednesday evening when they travel to Harrogate Railway Athletic (7.45pm).

NORTH KIRKLEES are without a representative in the quarter final of the West Riding Women’s County FA Cup but Lower Hopton, from the Second Division of the West Riding County League, produced the performance of their lives against Leeds United.

Lower Hopton went down 5-3 at home to the FA Premier League North 1 side in their second-round tie.

Vikki Bardell picked up Hopton’s

player of the match award while goals from Eve Hattrell, Bethany Ellis and Dani Anthony scored to give the Premier League side a fright.

Ossett Albion were never really in the game at home to Leeds United’s reserve side as the FA Premier League Reserve Division side ran out 5-0 winners to take their place in the last eight along with Bradford City, Altofts, Ilkley Town, Thackley, Farsley Celtic and Guiseley Vixens.

Albion will be hoping for better luck this week when they return to North East Regional League action with a home game in the Southern Division against bottom club Swallownest

Beighton.

In the West Riding League First Division Ossett Town, who were without a game, remain second behind Farsley Celtic reserves but Dewsbury Rangers lost again when they went down 3-2 at home to third-placed Clifton.

Neither Ossett Town or Dewsbury are in action again until December 10.

In Division Two Lower Hopton, leaders of the division on goal difference, are at an Ossett Town Development side in second-bottom spot.

With 100 per cent league record to defend this looks like being another win for the Mirfield side.

HEAVY WOOLLEN FOOTBALL

Reigning champs in surprise withdrawal THE HEAVY WOOLLEN SUNDAY LEAGUE was rocked this week with the shock resignation of long-serving members St John Fisher.

The team, who have been members of the league for 40 years, have struggled to raise a side on numerous occasions this season and were bottom of the Premier Division at the time of their folding.

Navigation climbed to second place in the Premier Division after goals from Patrick Sykes and Oliver Fisher saw them win 2-0 against Walkers Hounds.

Linthwaite remain two points clear at the top.

In the Championship, Old Bank WMC demolished The Yorkshireman 13-0, with Jonathan Mitchell bagging a magnificent seven goals.

Bobby Evans fired a hat-trick, Luke Duncan hit a brace with Tom Frizzell completing the tally.

Old Bank climb to fourth place,

four points behind leaders Deighton WMC. Scholes Athletic won 8-6 at home to Clifton Rangers who had a hat-trick from Will Tolley and goals from Mitch Cummings, Jake Waterson and Alex Barnes accounting for their total.

Battyeford’s perfect record in Division One came to an end as they lost 5-1 at Snowdon.

James Heeley led the way with a hat-trick, Irfan Ali and Atif Basharat were also on target in a result that sees Snowdon rise to third place.

Clifton Rangers Reserves are in second place after Aaron Burnside (two), Lewis Moran, Luke Briggs, Joe Lawson, Leevan Brown and Billy Benton all found the net in a 7-0 win over St Ignatius.

In the only other game played, Birstall St Patricks won 2-0 at Wike Horse thanks to strikes from Kieran Cooper and Joseph Smith.

Dewsbury contingent chosen for Tonga clash ALEX WALMSLEY, Sam Burgess and Tom Burgess are set to play together for a second time as they have all been selected for England’s semi-final showdown with Tonga on Saturday (5am).

The Dewsbury-born trio played in England’s 36-6 quarter-final victory against Papa New Guinea last weekend.

Walmsley scored his first international try in Sunday’s win, becoming the first player from Dewsbury Celtic to score for England.

Sam Burgess turned his ankle in the game and was forced to sit out England’s training session on Wednesday.

But head coach Wayne Bennett is confident Burgess will be fit enough by Saturday.

He said: “He hurt his ankle but that’s not going to be an issue.”

Elsewhere, former Batley winger, Jermaine McGillvary, has been lighting up the tournament after scoring another two tries against PNG on Sunday.

McGillvary, who made over 50 appearances for the Bulldogs between 2008 and 2009 – scoring 42 tries, is the top metre maker at the World Cup. The current Huddersfield Giants winger has also scored a total of six tries while notching two try assists.

BATLEY BOYS have made club history after being entered into the Challenge Cup for the first time ever.

The Boys have completed their last two regular seasons unbeaten in the Yorkshire Men’s League and their exploits have been rewarded with a spot in next year’s Challenge Cup. Batley chairman Ian Godfrey has been involved with the club for over 30 years and is delighted to see the team earn a place in one of rugby league’s oldest competitions.

“It is the first time we have ever been entered into the Challenge Cup and it is brilliant,” said Godfrey.

“I have been involved here for over 30 years and it is a great achievement for the club.

“I have worked with the open age side before and they have very good coaches.”

The first round ties will be played on the weekend of January 28/29 but the Boys will need to wait to find out their opponents as the draw is not due to take place until the beginning of January.

Meanwhile, Batley Boys stand-off Adam Bingham has been selected as part of the Yorkshire Men’s League squad that will travel on a tour of Serbia.

Subhaan makes long trip worthwhile with victory BOXER Mohammed Subhaan produced an impressive display as he soundly defeated Lewis Southgate from St Mary’s Amateur Boxing Club last week.

The Dewsbury-based KBW Gym fighter won with a unanimous points decision and also claimed the fighter of the night award at the St Mary’s ABC home show last Friday.

It was the perfect response from

Subhaan, who was defeated by Joe Tyres of Darlington in his last outing.

Last Friday’s fight was the second bout between Subhaan and Southgate. The pair had previously met at KBW’s home show in what was a close encounter.

However this time it was Subhaan who made the long trip as he travelled all the way to Chatham in Kent for the St Mary’s show.

From the start of the first round the pair exchanged blows in the centre of the ring, Subhaan was able to use his jab to keep Southgate at bay and produced the better combinations.

Subhaan dominated the second round as he landed the more effective shots while also having an answer for every question Southgate threw at him.

In the third and final round the

home fighter tried to up the pace against the KBW boxer but Subhaan remained in control, picking apart his opponent.

Southgate ended the fight frustrated as he saw his relentless attack easily quelled by Subhaan.

The KBW star is back in action this weekend as he comes up against rival Callum Grice in the third meeting between the two.

Subhaan has won the last two

meetings and will aim to make it three wins from three at the Grace club home show in Bradford.

Saif Cheema, also from KBW, is set to make his professional debut at the North Bridge Leisure Centre in Halifax on December 15.

Cheema will fight in the super welterweight division in a show that will have a 10-fight card.

Dewsbury confirm pre-season fixtures

Cowling signs extension deal with Bulldogs

By Ben McKenna DEWSBURY RAMS have confirmed an additional two pre-season fixtures to follow the Boxing Day derby with Batley Bulldogs.

The Rams will travel to the John Smith’s Stadium on January 14 to take on Super League side Huddersfield Giants.

A week later, at the Tetley’s Stadium, Dewsbury will face Bradford Bulls in a testimonial game for captain Paul Sykes, who recently signed a one-year extension deal.

Head coach Neil Kelly believes the games will be ideal preparation for his side ahead of their 2018 Kingstone Press Championship campaign.

“Both games offer a really good challenge to the squad,” said Kelly.

“With one of the teams in a higher league and the other team in a lower league to us it will be a good test.

“A couple of weeks before the end of last season Bradford turned us over at home, so we know both games will offer a really big challenge.”

Kelly has been keen not to arrange too many pre-season games and is not planning on adding any more fixtures before the season is due to start in February.

He said: “The game against Batley and the two we have arranged in January are the only games I’m planning at the moment.

“I don’t see a situation arising where I would want to add to that, but I am not ruling it out just yet.”

The head coach’s current contract runs out at the end of 2018, but he has admitted that sorting out a deal is not something at the forefront of his mind.

“Me and Mark had a conversation a couple of months ago but I have not thought about it much,” added Kelly.

“Me and Mark need to get together and talk about it.”

Despite no further talks taking place Dewsbury chairman Mark Sawyer is confident that Kelly will sign an extension contract with the club.

Sawyer previously told The Press that the club have offered Kelly a deal that would see him stay with the Rams until the end of 2020.

And Sawyer firmly believes that he will stay on past 2018.

Sawyer says there is still money set aside as Kelly looks to bring in another forward before the start of the 2018 campaign.

He said: “We are looking to bring one more player in, more than likely a prop and there is money put aside in the budget for that.

“It is good to have Billy Hayes come back, he had a bit of an issue with injury last year and had played well for us until that, so it is great news he has come on board.

“Rob gives us a bit of cover on the wing, there were a few clubs chasing him so we are really pleased he has signed.”

In other news Dewsbury are holding a Christmas party on Friday, December 8, at 7.30pm. The evening has been organised by the Amber Ribbon supporters group and includes a buffet and live music. Supporters can purchase their tickets for £5 at the club reception.

The Rams are also holding a kit launch on Wednesday December 20 at 7.30pm.

The launch will be combined with a meet the players event where fans will get the chance to meet some of the club’s new signings. The 2018 home and away shirts will be unveiled before being put on sale in the new year.

BATLEY BULLDOGS have confirmed that centre Danny Cowling has signed a oneyear extension deal at Mount Pleasant.

The popular centre joined Batley from Doncaster in 2016 after beginning his career at Wakefield.

Cowling, who has also played for Halifax, has made a total of 31 appearances for Batley in the last two seasons, scoring nine tries.

Meanwhile, the club will be unveiling their 2018 playing kit this evening (Fri), in partnership with kit manufacturers Ravensport.

Ravensport design and production manager Brett Turner is excited about this year’s design.

“Between myself and the club we have opted this year for a modern twist on a traditional Batley kit,” said Turner.

“I am really excited to get the feedback of the fans, as I am every year.

Batley’s community gym proving a hit THE Batley Bulldogs Community Team have started running gym-based activities – in a bid to help local residents become more active.

The Bulldogs are also focusing on improving physical and mental wellbeing.

The community gym has proved a hit so far, with people of all ages and abilities coming together for instructor-led training sessions.

The project is part of a larger incentive – funded by the Big Lottery Fund – to bring people together and improve community spirit, with a particular focus on wellbeing.

The gym is located on Heritage Road, right next to the Fox’s Biscuits Stadium.

Mixed sessions run on Tuesdays and Thursdays between 8am and 9.45am and on Wednesday evenings from 7pm to 8pm.

There are also ladies-only sessions which run on Mondays between 9am and 11am, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9.45am to 10.45am and on Wednesday evenings from 5pm to 6pm.

“Absolutely everyone is welcome in the gym,” said community manager Jon Humpleby.

“It is not all about just training, as there is a strong

emphasis on having fun and time to socialise with each other.

“We are looking forward to welcoming as many people as possible into this facility, which we are really pleased to open up to the community.”

Sessions cost £2, with some of the money taken going towards improving the facilities in the gym.

The other funds will be used for any charitable work that the club wishes to contribute towards.
