Crash killer spared return to jail after drunken fan attack

By Staff Reporters A DEWSBURY woman has avoided going back to jail after a drunken assault at a concert.

Emma Egan: Punched a stranger who told her boyfriend not to urinate on a woman at a concert

Emma Egan was sentenced to four years in prison in 2014 for killing a cyclist in a drink-driving crash.

The 29-year-old was released last year on parole for good behaviour, but appeared in court again last month accused of assault.

Egan admitted to assaulting Gary Tann at a Drake concert at the Etihad Stadium when she appeared at Manchester Magistrates’ Court at the end of August.

The former beauty therapist, of

Ashworth Green in Dewsbury, lost her temper with Mr Tann after he told her boyfriend off for urinating on people.

Egan’s boyfriend, Fauod Elhabba, 27, had been relieving himself at the gig.

When Mr Tann said it was unacceptable, Egan, who had been drinking, attacked him and pushed him over a row of seats.

Carl Miles, prosecuting, said: “The group stood up in front of them but Miss Egan squared up to Mr Tann and pushed him repeatedly in the face until he fell over the row in front.

“Security staff were informed and Mr Elhabba was escorted from the arena. They were both subsequently arrested. In the initial interviews both defendants

denied what they had done.”

At the time, Egan was on licence for two years for causing the death of 55-year-old Eric Codling by dangerous driving when drunk.

Father-of-two Mr Codling was riding his bike along Whirlowdale Road, Sheffield, in November 2013 when Egan, who was over the drink-drive limit and travelling at around 70mph, struck and killed him.

She had stopped briefly after the crash before driving off in her Vauxhall Astra.

Police found her at her boyfriend’s home.

She said she was “profoundly sorry for her actions leading to the tragedy” and explained she had “been in a state of emotional

turmoil” over the ending of her relationship.

Having served two years of her four-year sentence, should she have committed another crime during her licence period Egan could have gone back to prison.

She was charged with common assault for the concert incident but escaped with a 12-month community order.

Magistrates ordered her to complete 160 hours of unpaid work and to pay her victim £200 in compensation, as well as £455 in costs and surcharges.

“At the time she was released we were told that if she committed another misdemeanour then she would go to prison but that’s not happened. That’s not justice is it?”

MP’s blast for Hunt over ambulance shift

By Zoe Shackleton DEWSBURY MP Paula Sherriff has launched another scathing attack on Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt after discovering that most local patients who call for an ambulance will no longer be sent to Dewsbury and District Hospital.

As the Mid Yorkshire NHS Trust implemented its reorganisation of hospital services this week, Ms Sherriff highlighted changes to the ambulance admissions policy following the ‘downgrade’ of Dewsbury Hospital.

The Acute Hospital Reconfiguration (AHR) programme reached its final phase on Monday with the centralisation of services at Pinderfields Hospital in Wakefield.

The Labour MP received an anonymous ambulance service document, which indicated that the vast majority of medical conditions will see patients taken to the ‘nearest Emergency Department but not Dewsbury and District Hospital’.

The information sheet advised that patients calling an ambulance and requiring hospital could expect to be taken to Pinderfields, Huddersfield or Bradford - but not Dewsbury.

In her latest letter to Mr Hunt, Ms Sherriff wrote: “Only two months ago, in a letter to me you advised that around 70 per cent of patients attending the A&E would see no change in the service.

“I was shocked then to see that some 30 per cent of admissions were to be affected. So I am dismayed to receive this new evidence which indicates a far greater impact, with the vast majority of conditions listed instructing patients to be taken to ‘nearest ED (not DDH)’.

“At a time when I continue to hear increasingly from constituents who are experiencing long delays in receiving care, both in ambulance transfers away from Dewsbury Hospital and waits upon arrival at Pinderfields Hospital, this document makes stark reading.

“Indeed, it appears that the impact on ambulance admissions to Dewsbury A&E may have been grossly understated.”

Ms Sherriff continued in her letter to criticise Mr Hunt’s NHS reorganisation and funding shortages for cuts and closures to NHS services.

She also repeated an earlier invitation to the Health Secretary to visit Dewsbury Hospital and see for himself the impact funding cuts have had on local health services.

Last week, Batley & Spen MP Tracy Brabin also called for Mr Hunt to visit the constituency to answer her own concerns.

Changes to Dewsbury Hospital have included the creation of new frailty units, expanded space and opening hours for outpatient care, and the development of a Clinical Decision Unit - where patients are admitted for tests

Kirklees girls in TV spotlight DEWSBURY was in the national spotlight once again this week after a Channel 4 documentary.

White Kid, Brown Kid aired on Monday night and followed two teenagers growing up in separate parts of North Kirklees to see if they could bridge the religious and ethnic divide in Dewsbury - described as one of the most racially segregated towns in the UK. Siobhan is a 16-year-old living in Chickenley, a predominantly white community and Farhana, 17, lives in Batley Carr in a mostly British Asian community.

The two could not have been more different - Siobhan likes going to parties and drinking, and Farhana is a devout Muslim who had never travelled on public transport.

As the programme went on, despite initial meetings being a little nervous and awkward, the pair managed to put aside their differences and began to talk more openly, learning about each other’s lives.

At one point, Farhana even fixed a headscarf onto Siobhan.

Midway through Farhana’s mother asked for filming to stop altogether, concerned that the documentary might have an adverse effect on her daughter’s reputation.

But by the end of the show the girls had managed to form a friendship and their families had spent positive time with each other.

Both teens have earned a place on the same college course, so will be spending more time together - and not just for the

It shows outsiders the true side of how we get on with life around our town. Not only our Muslim friends but our European friends here in Dewsbury also. We are a multicultural town and this is good press.”

Rachael Ainsworth added: “I really enjoyed this programme and I hope the girls manage to maintain a friendship.”

Linda Harrison commented: “The families had nothing in common and the girls spending time together was obviously a big issue for one family who had to answer to the community ... they will never be able to be real friends.”

Banned driver jailed after police chase A BANNED driver has been sentenced to jail for leading police on a dangerous pursuit whilst high on cocaine with his heavily pregnant girlfriend in the car.

Appearing at Leeds Crown Court, Ryan Hurley pleaded guilty to dangerous driving, driving while disqualified and with cocaine over the prescribed limit.

The court heard that on May 26, Hurley had screeched past a police car on Garnett Street, Staincliffe, alerting officers.

They followed him on a

pursuit through Chapel Fold, Holly Grove and Manor Way in Staincliffe, before he sped through James Street, Norfolk Street, Dark Road, Cross Bank Road, Ealand Road and Ings Road - reaching speeds of 60mph in 30mph zones.

The 30-year-old eventually stopped on Grosvenor Road and jumped out of the car while it was still moving, leaving his seven-month pregnant girlfriend inside.

Hurley tried to run off and hide in some bushes but officers found him and arrested

him. He tested positive for cocaine but not alcohol.

Hurley had been banned for six months in March for having no insurance following an earlier offence of being in charge of a vehicle with excess alcohol.

Judge Geoffrey Marson QC jailed Hurley for a total of 15 months and banned him from driving for three years when he is released. He said: “You drove like a lunatic with your pregnant girlfriend in the car and then left the vehicle while it was moving.”

Ms Sherriff added: “I’m concerned that patients calling an ambulance will routinely be taken to hospitals other than Dewsbury.

“With these changes already showing a strain on services at Pinderfields Hospital, what can we expect should the planned downgrade of HRI go ahead?”

Dr Sarah Robertshaw, urgent care lead and accident and emergency consultant at The Mid Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust, said: “As a Trust we want people to be treated quickly, in the right place and by the right specialist doctor.

“The changes we have made will do this because the most seriously ill patients will get faster access to specialist clinicians and the care they need.

“Anyone calling 999 today or in the future will get the same service they got last week.

Patients in life-threatening situations receive treatment from the paramedic on arrival with ongoing care at the most appropriate site; this might be Dewsbury, Pinderfields or the nearest hospital that is able to meet their needs.

“This is better for our patients who are seriously ill and improves the likelihood of them making a good recovery.

“Dewsbury A&E will look after all patients who self-present and the addition of new services through our reconfiguration programme and £500,000 investment in Dewsbury A&E means we have increased capacity to look after more patients on the Dewsbury site.”

News In Brief Pensioner found SPEN VALLEY: A pensioner who went missing for 13 hours was found in Bradford by a firefighter.

Gordon Bentley, 77, disappeared from a care home in Gomersal last Wednesday.

He was eventually found some 12 miles away on Leeds Road, Bradford, at around 10am the following morning by off-duty firefighter Mark Hemingway.

Mr Bentley’s grandson, Lewis Richardson, 19, said he is now at home in Roberttown.

Lewis said: “He went to hospital for a check up but physically he is perfectly fine.

It’s such a relief to have him home.”

Sentence extended DEWSBURY: A man failed to comply with a community order because of work commitments, Kirklees magistrates heard.

Andrezef Mrozowicz, of West Park Street, failed to show for probation appointments on June 8 and August 4 that he was supposed to attend as part of a 12-week suspended sentence, previously imposed for three assaults.

The 34-year-old pleaded guilty to failing to comply with a community order and an extra four days of rehabilitation activities were added on to his sentence.

Name that street NORTH KIRKLEES: Members of the public are being given the opportunity to name a street.

Council officials are looking for suggestions for street names at four new developments, two of which are in North Kirklees.

The new streets are located on land next to Heathfield Lane/Whitehall Road West in Birkenshaw, and Duxbury Hall on Roberttown Lane in Roberttown.

News In Brief Punter fined after threatening staff BIRSTALL: A man who lost out on £395 at a bookies has been fined after threatening staff.

According to staff at Betfred on Westgate in Dewsbury, Geoffrey Collier was late in putting his bet on, so they refused to pay out his winnings because it was not valid.

The 62-year-old, of Bronte Road, then started to get aggressive, telling two members of staff he would “do them both in” following the incident on July 29.

Collier pleaded guilty to a charge of using threatening behaviour likely to cause harassment, alarm or distress.

Judge Michael Fanning, at Kirklees Magistrates’ Court, fined Collier £85 as well as ordering him to pay £85 court costs and a £30 victim surcharge.

Budding astronaut prepares for lift-off Dewsbury man wins place among final six contestants in new BBC show

By Zoe Shackleton A BUDDING astronaut from Dewsbury is shooting for the stars in TV’s newest science programme.

Teen bites officer DEWSBURY: A teenager tried to bite a police officer after he was wrongly arrested.

Kirklees magistrates heard that the 15year-old’s mother had called police to their Dewsbury home because of problems she was having with another son, but officers turned their attention to the teen instead.

They attempted to handcuff him and he tried to bite an officer on the arm, and also spat at him.

He was ordered to carry out a 12-hour reparation order, which includes activities such as unpaid work directed by the youth offending team.

Barriers on the way DEWSBURY: Ticket barriers will be installed by the end of this year at Dewsbury Railway Station, it has been confirmed.

TransPennine Express, the rail firm that runs the station, have confirmed the gates will be put in place by the end of December.

The barriers are to be put up to stop people fare-dodging.

UP AND AWAY: Astronaut hopeful Tim Gregory

The BBC show, Astronauts: Do You Have What It Takes?, is headed by world-renowned astronaut Chris Hadfield in the search for Britain’s next spaceman.

Tim Gregory, a 24-year-old who hails from Hanging Heaton, is down to the final six contestants after being put through his paces in a series of gruelling challenges that test if the applicants have what it takes to become astronauts.

Tim, who is studying for a PhD in Cosmochemistry at the University of Bristol, said: “I learned so much about myself and so much about astronaut selection as well.

“I’ve really learned what my pitfalls are and what I can be doing in the meantime now to improve my chances of becoming an astronaut for real the next time the European Space Agency (ESA) are recruiting.”

A total of 12 contestants were picked meticulously from a long application process.

The former Heckmondwike Grammar School student added: “I filled in the application form and just kept getting through one stage after the other until I eventually made it through to the final 12.

“Just the fact that any of the 12 of us got to

be there was really valuable in itself because we all learned our pitfalls and our strengths.

I learned something from all three experts.”

The expert panel is made up of Chris Hadfield – who will give a personal recommendation to the winner when the ESA next look for new astronauts – former NASA medical researcher Dr Kevin Fong and psychologist Dr Iya Whiteley.

Challenges so far have included hovering a helicopter, contestants taking their own blood and being tested for claustrophobia, physical fitness and mental agility.

Those who fail to make the grade can be asked to leave at any time.

Tim said: “One of the biggest things I took away from this is what I need to do to improve my chances of becoming an astronaut.

“It has been so valuable, and Chris had so many wise words and messages to pass on.

Not just about astronauts but about life in general, he’s a really well-rounded person.

“It was the best experience of my life!”

Young and disabled set to be affected by changes YOUNG people and those who are disabled could be affected in the latest round of council cuts.

Kirklees have this week launched consultation exercises that could result in changes to services for children with special educational needs (SEN) or disabilities and to school transport, amongst others.

The first consultation concerns short breaks for parents and carers of children with additional needs, early years services for children with SEN or disabilities and transport that is funded by social care.

The consultation invites people to give their views on current services in the hope of letting children, young people and their carers shape what is offered in the future.

The council are also considering different ways of operating the access fund, which offers extra funding to childcare providers who care for children with SEN or disabilities.

In the second consultation, the council will look at the provision of free transport for some children who travel from home to school.

Kirklees currently pro-

vides transport for some children who are not eligible for the free-transport service.

The consultation asks for people’s views on changing the service so that it would only provide for children and young people who qualify under the national guidelines.

Woman dies after being struck by train A WOMAN died after being hit by a train at Ravensthorpe Railway Station on Monday afternoon.

Police and paramedics attended the scene and rail services between Leeds and

Huddersfield were suspended.

A spokesman for British Transport Police said: “A woman sadly died after she was struck by a train at Ravensthorpe station.

“Officers were called to the

station, shortly after 4.20pm and attended alongside paramedics.”

Police are still making enquiries to establish how the woman came to be on the tracks. She has still not been publicly identified.

Luddite attack remembered

By Steve Martyn PRAYERS have been said for the forgiveness of a 19th century clergyman on the site of a historic uprising.

Local religious leaders joined the developers of the Luddite Way Business Park at Rawfolds, Cleckheaton, in remembrance of lives lost during the Luddite attack more than 200 years ago.

Rev Brunel James and Rev Richard Burge met with Carl Barnes, managing director of Barnes (Construction) Ltd and his team to say prayers for the forgiveness of the harsh stance taken by Rev Hammond Robeson against the Luddites in April 1812.

Following months of unrest locally a band of 150 Luddites, whose livelihoods were put at risk by increasing mechanisation, attacked Cartwright Mill with hammers and axes on April 12, 1812.

They were seen as dangerous industrial terrorists and the Government sent hundreds of soldiers into the area to suppress them.

Two men were shot and the attack was repulsed.

A friend of mill-owner William Cartwight, Rev Hammond Robeson was involved in the search for the ringleaders and had soldiers who had been sent to control the uprising billeted in his

own home, which infuriated local people.

Rev James said: “The church of England has ‘unfinished business’ with the Luddites in the Spen Valley.

“One of the local clergymen, Rev Robeson, became involved in the repression of the Luddites.

“That was conduct unbecoming a clergyman by any standards.

“So we wanted to come and pray on this site, which is so close to where the traumatic events of 200 years ago took place.

“It seems appropriate that

it will now become a place that offers employment to local people.”

Prayers were also said for the forthcoming Luddite Way Business Park to become a valuable place for employment and enterprise.

A total of 22 units will stand on the historic site.

The development will be completed by early 2018 and several businesses are already committed to moving in.

“We are proud to be able to contribute towards the generation of jobs in Spenborough,” said Carl Barnes.

SAFE RETURN: The bell being blessed

Minster bell back home DEWSBURY Minster saw its 150-year-old Easter bell return home this week.

The bell had to be sent off for repair work in June after it was found to have cracks in it.

After raising enough money to meet the price of £8,500 to get the 300kg bell fixed, it was hoisted back up the tower on Tuesday morning by a group of local volunteers.

Before the tenor bell was hauled back into place, Rev Elizabeth Lee baptised and blessed it.

Tower captain at the Minster, Derek Johnstone, said: "Our fundraising has managed to pay all the bills so far, however there is still further work to do to bring the whole peal of bells up to the musical quality of the newly repaired Easter bell. That work will cost around £2,500.

"Our local volunteers have reduced the cost from the quotation by £750 and my thanks go out to everyone who has helped."

The reinstallation of the bell comes just in time for the World War One Centenary Commemoration that is taking place tomorrow (Saturday) at the Minster on Aldams Road.

BATLEY: A woman who suffered from mental health issues has been given a last chance despite again breaching a community order.

Rebecca Wilkinson, of Conway Crescent, was arrested for failing to live at an approved address and not keeping in touch with her probation officer.

The 28-year-old was previously jailed for not complying with a community order.

Kirklees magistrates heard that Wilkinson suffered from mental health issues but now lives at a fixed accommodation where she feels settled and secure.

Judge Michael Fanning gave her one last chance to stay out of trouble, but gave her a £120 fine and told her to pay £50 in court costs.

Case is revoked DEWSBURY MOOR: A burglar who was jailed for six years has had a separate court case revoked.

June Langley was sentenced to prison last week after she was found guilty of stealing from a pensioner in his Heckmondwike home.

The 48-year-old, of Fairfield Villas, was due at Kirklees Magistrates' Court on Friday after being charged with failing to comply with the curfew part of a community order.

Langley had this case dismissed because of the length of her custodial sentence.

Man hid in shed CHICKENLEY: A man was banned from contacting his ex-partner over an alleged assault, but was found hiding in her garden shed.

John Tomross, 30, was found by police at his former partner’s address on Princess Street on Sunday, September 3.

Kirklees magistrates heard that Tomross claimed he had been invited to the address.

He faces trial in October accused of assaulting her on another occasion, and was released on the same bail conditions as before.

Woman arrested after shouting racial abuse A WOMAN has been arrested after a group of Asian men were subjected to a torrent of racial abuse.

The men were walking near Dewsbury Cemetery last Friday afternoon when a car, believed to be a red Mini Cooper, pulled up next to them and a female passenger started shouting abuse.

A video recording of the incident was shared on social media, with the 28-second clip showing a blondehaired woman aggressively targeting the men.

A 43-year-old woman has since been arrested on suspicion of a racially aggravated public order offence, and remains in police custody with enquiries ongoing.

Inspector Ben Ryder said: “West Yorkshire Police recognise the effect that hate crime has on our different communities and we encourage them to be reported to us directly or through third-party reporting centres.

“We want to tackle

hate crime robustly by bringing offenders to justice, so that people in West Yorkshire are safe and feel safe.

“The timing of this particular hate crime has had added impact on local communities and I would like to reas-

sure the public that this incident has our full attention and our detectives are working hard to support a prosecution by the CPS. “I would personally encourage members of the public to report hate crime to the police and

to speak with their local Neighbourhood Policing Team about the work we do to prevent and prosecute hate crimes of all types.”

White, brown and a great divide DIDN’T expect much when I sat down to watch White Kid, Brown Kid, the Channel 4 documentary which aired on Monday night about two teenagers from Dewsbury.

My first misgiving was because – unless I’m much mistaken – it looked like Farhana, the Muslim girl, actually lived in Batley, which would be something of a liberty for starters.

Secondly, I was surprised the film made it into production at all – because I spent a considerable amount of time last autumn traipsing round the district with the producer, director and presenter Luned Tonderai, trying to open doors to find suitable girls for the programme.

It was difficult enough finding the right white teenager, although I thought they struck gold with Siobhan, her mum Bridget

she does not wear beautiful bright dresses, lipstick, makeup, and look like Miss World.

This wasn’t going to change the fabric of the deep division, the inherent suspicion and even dislike, with which a large proportion of white and Muslim people regard each other.

White Kid, Brown Kid illustrated, quite simply, the reality of life in this district.

Chickenley is a fair example of a still white, working class neighbourhood – far more than areas like Dewsbury Moor, Westtown or Thornhill Lees which are

now majority Muslim.

Chickenley might even be the last bastion.

If the programme came up short at all it was in failing to get a typical, conservative Mulsim family to take part.

Convince a Savile Town family to join in? You’ve a better chance of winning the lottery.

We didn’t see which mosque Farhana’s family attend but I’d hazard that it’s of the more moderate Sufi/Barelvi tradition than the Deobandis that dominate Savile Town and Mount Pleasant.

That notwithstanding the girl’s mum was clearly reluctant, which was quite telling.

If moderate families have issues with letting a young woman get on a bus at 17, what does it say about the more conservative Muslims who dominate this district?

SO THERE I was on Tuesday, paddling my canoe to work. After taking off my sou-wester and wellies, I was immediately confronted by the downstairs staff, their icy blue noses poking out from below their woolly hats and above their donkey jackets.

It was difficult to tell what they were saying because their teeth were going 90 to the dozen. Something about “it’s bloody freezing in here boss and can’t we turn the central heating on?” Something to that effect.

So, have Siobhan and Farhana developed their friendship since the cameras departed? I’d love to know and would like to think so, but I expect not. Back to business as usual.

Has Imran’s family been celebrated or snubbed in Batley Carr since the programme aired? The former, hopefully, because I for one applaud his courage, but I wouldn’t bet on it.

White Kid, Brown Kid didn’t find any kind of solution to our divided communities’ deeper issues because the differences are simply too deep, too ingrained.

I thought it told a decent and revealing tale about decent, ordinary people with more in common than they thought. Sometimes, just letting the story be told is the best we can get.

WOULD love to see the police papers presented to the CPS which saw a health spa owner prosecuted for sexual assault.

Kerry Brocklebank admitted rubbing some oil into the calf of an anonymous chap as he waited for his male masseur. He is anonymous, because alleged victims of sex crimes are protected by law, which is right. In this snowflake’s case however, sadly it means he can still go down the pub without the lads ripping into him.

He felt violated by the calf massage, apparently. Her boobs “were only inches” from his face, he said.

Well, having seen photos of the amply endowed Ms Brocklebank, she could have been in the next room and that might still have applied.

And though she told the court that the calf is not “an erogenous sexual zone,” sorry love, in the looming presence of those puppies, I might actually beg to differ.

But still, Cambridge Crown Court heard no evidence that she gave him a ‘jiggle-jiggle’ round the chops, for which blokes usually pay extra.

No, she just rubbed his calf for a few seconds, then his lower back briefly at which his protest and the arrival of

A full on Crown Court trial?

They’ve lost the plot.

The police should have hired Kerry Brocklebank – they love massaging the figures the male masseur ended the incident. And so he ran crying to the law. Dearie me.

Did they turn out or just give you a crime number?

I am gobsmacked that a senior officer signed off on this, although in these Politically Correct days of madness, nothing surprises.

Perhaps they offered to deal with Ms Brocklebank by way of a police caution – which is how Kirklees Police get rid of electoral fraud – but she declined. But for the

The Tories have some nerve, demanding better results from forces when they are systematically paring their funds to the bone.

It is however a problem very much of the police’s own making. For years their priority has been to mask the actual levels of crime; to talk victims out of making complaints, to hide true levels of criminality, to mask and massage statistics – to deceive public and politicians alike.

They’ve been so good at it that their cash has been slashed – and now it’s coming back to bite police chiefs on the backside because as people in the real world know, crime is rife.

PS: I wrote that before Thursday’s news that West Midlands Police have been failing to record nearly 39,000 crimes a year, including assaults and rapes.

Charges denied TWO MEN accused of murdering Dewsbury man Jonathan Binns have this week denied the charges.

Jaelen Herlt, of Derwent Road, and Khaleem Harris, of North Road, both in Dewsbury, appeared via a prison video link before a judge at Bradford Crown Court on Monday morning.

The 20-year-olds denied murdering Mr Binns outside the Scarborough Hotel on Friday, February 17, and pleaded not guilty to further charges of manslaughter and violent disorder on the same night.

The pair were told by Judge Jonathan Durham Hall QC that their trial could last up to six weeks and would be listed to start on January 15 next year.

A pre-trial hearing lasted

around 30 minutes on Monday and a further six locals, along with two 17year-old youths, also pleaded not guilty to violent disorder charges.

They are: Jonathan Newby, aged 21, of Foxroyd Lane; Ryan Scaife, aged 18, of Partridge Crescent; Kallum Harris, aged 19, of Kilner View; Ashley Longstaff, aged 19, of Lees Hall Road; Thomas Chapman, aged 18, of Edge View; and Reece Hinchcliffe, aged 18, of Doubting Road.

One of the youths denied a charge of wounding another male complainant and possessing a knuckle-duster.

They have all denied violent disorder and Newby has pleaded not guilty to possessing a knuckle-duster and cosh.

All of the defendants apart

from Harris and Herlt had their conditional bail extended until the trial next year.

Police were called to the Scarborough Hotel at 8.35pm on February 17 after a member of the public reported a street fight outside on The Town, the road which runs through Thornhill.

On arrival, officers discovered 32-year-old father-of-one Jonathan Binns had received serious injuries after being knocked down by a vehicle leaving the scene.

Despite efforts by members of the public and emergency services, Mr Binns died later in hospital.

Mr Binns, of Ings Crescent in Thornhill, worked at Dewsbury-based Dust Control Systems in Shaw Cross Business Park for more than 12 years.

Kirklees have stripped the town I have recently read two items in The Press.

The first one was regarding a group of old Dewsbury Borough residents getting together to bring the town back to its original status.

I am afraid that if the ‘Royal Family’ in Huddersfield (Kirklees Council) keeps its grip, the chance of that happening is remote.

Kirklees Council is like a swarm of locusts, swarming over Dewsbury at various times over the past years, to strip of its assets.

Examples are the Town Hall silver-

Letter of the Week: D Hirst, Dewsbury ware, the Mayor’s regalia, the selling of buildings and even the Yorkshire stone paving slabs.

The next item related to a combined swoop on Dewsbury town centre by various services to stop traffic offences, drug matters, anti-social offences etc.

I was a town beat officer in the 50s and it would never have got that way.

My armoury was a whistle and a chain, handcuffs and a staff. My biggest protection was respect from the public.

I had no need to look over my shoulder while giving the drunk and disorder-

ly chap his ‘goodnight kiss’. In many cases it brought a round of applause from the passing public.

Finally, the cost of rates on the market stalls and shops has driven longstanding stall-holders away and lots of shopkeepers.

It does not take a genius to understand that an occupied shop with lower rates is better than an empty shop that has no rates to pay.

If the situation worsens it will only take a strong wind to blow up the piles of dust outside the empty shops and we can rename the town ‘SHANTY TOWN’.

Put simply, it would allow a transitional period where we amicably arrange our ongoing relationship, thus providing much-needed certainty for British business and consumers.

We recognise that a transitional arrangement does not deliver all of the changes that we require from the final deal, including with regard to management of migration.

That is why Labour is clear that the transitional period must be time-limited and that transitional arrangements will not frustrate or reverse the process of leaving the EU. It is a sensible and responsible way to protect jobs and the economy and ensure that Britain and the EU reach a mutually beneficial final deal.

Please be assured that, as I have been very clear about, I accept and respect the result of last year’s referendum. Britain will leave the European Union, including the Single Market.

I believe that as part of leaving the European Union, we must leave the Single Market. That’s why, prior to the Summer Recess, I voted for the Labour amendment to the

Queen’s Speech that called for the same benefits as the single market because I believe that we must be a partner who benefits from, but is not a member of the EU. You refer to the recent announcement by my colleague, the Shadow Secretary of State for Exiting the European Union that it is Labour’s

position to seek a time-limited transitional deal on the same basic terms, including in relation to the Single Market, we currently have.

This is a decision taken in the national interest because it seeks to avoid the economic cliff edge that we would face if we were to leave the EU without a deal in place.

1: A new station at Thornhill Lees so we can get on the diverted trains between Leeds, Huddersfield and Manchester.

2: The line speed upgrades between Stalybridge and Leeds.

These major civil engineering projects, on a line with many tunnels, will likely close the line for weeks at a time.

It makes sense to do these upgrades prior to electrification.

We should remember that ‘HS3’ was a rebranding of these upgrades to our existing railway.

The trains don’t need to go faster than 125mph to get between Leeds and Manchester in less than 30 minutes.

We are forever being told we are the fifth richest country, so how come we can house and feed the world but are unable to take care of our own?

Dewsbury, like most towns, has empty shops and buildings. Why then don’t they turn them into bedsits and get them off the streets?

They would then have an address, would be able to access benefits and hopefully find employment.

Is this not something councils and MPs ought to be sorting out, or are they too busy filling in their expenses?

Understanding is needed From: John Appleyard, Liversedge I listened recently to a radio phonein where a woman called to say that many years ago she was refused entrance to a grammar school because she was epileptic.

Under the Matrimony Act of 1937 a person could not marry if they suffered with epilepsy because they were not deemed to be of sound mind.

Both cases highlight the discrimination that existed against those with epilepsy.

Over 40 years ago I worked with a woman who had epileptic fits, and it was not a pretty sight to witness one.

There is no cure and in some cases medication is not effective.

In the UK 1,000 people a year die from epilepsy-related causes, many are young and in the prime of their lives.

To understand epilepsy I would like to recommend to your readers a book I borrowed from my local library, called ‘A smell of burning’.

It’s a memoir of epilepsy written

by Colin Grant whose teenage brother Christopher was diagnosed with epilepsy.

Phoning up adverts that said they’d pay cash for MOT failures, two firms said they could collect the car, but couldn’t give me anything for it because the price of scrap metal had gone down.

A friend of mine, who is a mechanic, said he’d tow the car to a waste trader in Morley.

Surprise, surprise! We towed it onto the weighbridge and they transferred £145 into my bank account the next day.

Good result. So beware of some adverts.

I would like to comment on three letters in last week’s edition.

1: Mr Appleyard, (I’m sure Mr Lockwood will reply in his own unique way to your views), if Danny’s observations are so disagreeable, dont read The Press!

However as a keen reader I note Mr Appleyard is a regular writer – this seems odd!

I do agree with what Danny says generally, he’s the only local to speak up! The ‘Guardian’ hasn’t been ‘local’ for years.

2: Samantha Lloyd-Gray is correct, a terrible shame that a Dewsbury tradition, in particular Baileys, has been left to wrack and

ruin, my family have wonderful memories of great food and lovely staff.

3: Finally, Mr McFadden is right regarding speed, Diana’s inept chauffeur and security staff who didn’t notice he was drunk. But certain things don’t sit right to me, like many other high-profile accidents/assassinations.

Lack of taxi phone From: Tony Page, Mirfield For many years my wife and I have been regular Lidl customers and have just had our first experience of the new store.

We are senior citizens, happily married for over 60 years, but with age there comes disadvantages.

Mobility is a major problem as driving my own car has not been possible for some time – hence our dependency on taxis.

The old Lidl store, like the Co-op, catered for people like ourselves who rely solely on a taxi service, and both stores provided a free phone service for direct access to the taxi service.

As with many people of our age, we do not have mobile phones and rely solely on being able to order a taxi to get us back home and still allow us to remain independent.

The new store however, does NOT provide this service which I feel strongly is not fair and a big mistake for people like ourselves who are left in a situation whereby we must either pre-book a taxi to pick us up at a predetermined time or to request a member of staff or a member of the public to ring up on our behalf.

Come on, Lidl. Look after your loyal and long-standing customers and we, in turn, will patronise your store more often.

Fighting on all fronts to retain our local services L AST year, Heath Secretary Jeremy Hunt was named by a YouGov poll as the most disliked frontline politician of any party.

After spending years systematically underfunding and dismantling the NHS, the result came as no surprise.

What did surprise me however, is Mr Hunt’s recent decision to take on one of the world’s brightest minds.

Responding on Twitter to a speech made by Professor Hawking in which he set out his concerns about the private sector’s involvement in the NHS, Jeremy Hunt accused Hawking of ‘most pernicious falsehood’.

You’d think the Health Secretary would quit whilst he was (really far) behind, but he just keeps digging.

Of course, Professor Hawking is absolutely correct to raise concern about profit being made from our NHS. As I write this column, I have received a response to a question I put to Mr Hunt, admitting that locum spend has risen each year from 2013/14 to 2015/16, and that the Health Service has spent £2.935 billion on locum staff already this year.

Clearly, Government are failing to address the recruitment and retention crisis that they caused. Yet for all of their recent talk of a public sector

pay rise, our vital NHS workers are yet to see one materialise. I sincerely hope it will.

I am particularly concerned by the recent finalisation of the downgrade of the A&E Department at Dewsbury and District Hospital.

The most unwell patients in Kirklees will now have to travel further in their time of need, and I cannot accept that.

It undermines the principle of a truly National Health Service.

That’s why I have invited Jeremy Hunt to visit Dewsbury and District Hospital, so that he can see for himself the absolute necessity of reinstating a fully functioning A&E in Batley & Spen.

Another area in which Government are letting local

people down, is child poverty.

During a recent meeting with Action for Children, I learnt that just 63.1 per cent of children in Batley & Spen reached a good level of development in 2015/16.

That’s 6.2 per cent below the English national average, and has actually fallen since the previous year.

Levels of good child development in Batley & Spen ought to be improving.

However, under a Government that has cut Sure Start Centres, slashed school budgets and overseen a disastrous implementation of the 30hour childcare policy, I am disappointed but not surprised by this news. As the local MP, and as the Shadow Early Years Minister, I will continue to work tirelessly on this in Parliament.

In more positive news, I’m delighted to be supporting Kirkwood Hospice, who are celebrating their 30th anniversary this year, as my charity of the month for September.

I’m also looking forward to Batley Festival, which will take place this coming weekend.

Highlights will include a performance on an open top bus.

Man jailed for abuse at festival DEWSBURY MOOR: A man who hurled racial abuse at police and members of the public at Huddersfield Food and Drink Festival has been jailed.

Manaver Din, of Ravenshouse Road, pleaded guilty to offences of racially-aggravated assault and using threatening behaviour when he appeared before Kirklees magistrates.

The Huddersfield court heard that Din had a history of similar crimes and caught police attention at the festival when he barged into a woman whilst drunk and angry.

An officer went to speak to him and the 37-year-old spat on her leg, saying: “F*** off you white b*****d.”

The torrent of abuse carried on and Din was arrested. He reportedly suffered a breakdown in his marriage and has taken to solvent and alcohol abuse since.

He was jailed for six months for persistent offending which showed a pattern of violence and threats of a racist nature.

Driver who hit wall is released BIRKENSHAW: A man who was arrested after a car crashed into a wall has been released from custody.

An Audi saloon car smashed into a wall on Mill Lane on Tuesday afternoon and a local resident, who did not want to be named, said they thought it followed a police chase.

The resident thought it looked as though the car had been travelling from Birkenshaw roundabout up Bradford Road.

A spokesman for West Yorkshire Police said: “At 3.10pm there was a report of a single vehicle collision at the junction of Mill Lane, Birkenshaw.

“The 25-year-old man who was arrested was released pending further inquiries.”

CCG meeting NORTH KIRKLEES: Members of the public are invited to the NHS North Kirklees Clinical Commissioning Group's annual general meeting.

Festival set to thrill Sixth year of popular Batley showpiece expected to attract large crowds

By Steve Martyn CROWDS will throng the town centre for Batley Festival tomorrow (Sat).

One of the biggest dates in Batley’s calendar involves a yearround effort from a team of organisers and volunteers.

Now in its sixth year, the event attracts crowds of up to 6,000 people with a line-up of fun-filled performances, entertainment and events.

The bulk of the action will take place in the Market Place between 11am and 5pm.

Festival director Kimberley Thirkhill said: “We are looking forward to a fun-filled family day out for all ages. We are expecting huge crowds in Batley town centre with a whole host of performers and street theatre artists as well as community performers on the main stage.”

Leading festival acts include Mr Wilson’s Second Liners, who will perform a brass band rave in the streets of Batley; the Whalley Range All Stars and Dizzy O’Dare while Axial Dance and Urban Canvas will be leading a ‘chalk dance’ on the cobbles after graffiti is drawn on the ground.

There will also be a sneak peek on stage of The Ruck, a new play inspired by Batley RLFC’s U-16 Girls team.

There will be around 40 stalls selling home-made goods, activities for all ages plus performances from professional visiting artists and entertainers, thanks to Creative Scene, which brings culture, art and performance to North Kirklees using Arts Council funding.

The family-friendly festival is also supported by Kirklees Council.

Community groups will perform on the open air main stage, with a special show by The Sarah Taylor School of Dance and other local groups.

Over the weekend there will also be a visit from IOU Theatre and their converted double-decker bus.

The group will be presenting Rear View, a show that takes the audience on a ride around the town, as two poets take you on a moving adventure.

Rams’ rugby memories aiding dementia fight A NEW club has been launched by Dewsbury Rams fans to help those suffering with dementia.

The Dewsbury Memories Club is run entirely by volunteers and aims to bring together fans and their families to share experiences of watching sport.

As well as being an opportunity to talk about sporting highlights, the club is also helping to combat loneliness and helps people cope with the dramatic changes in the lives of those suffering from Alzheimer’s disease.

The club meets on the second Wednesday of every month in the Amber Ribbon Bar at the Tetley’s Stadium on Owl Lane and regularly features special guests - including former Dewsbury favourite Allan Agar, a member of the club’s 1973 Championship-winning team.

Set up with help from the charity Rugby League Cares, the memories club welcomes fans and players of all ages from any club to share their stories.

Allison Simpson, whose father is an ardent Dewsbury fan and was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s two-and-a-half years ago, has been a driving force behind the venture.

“Dad has been a Dewsbury fan all his life and the whole family are huge supporters of the club,” said Mrs Simpson.

“Sport is one of the few things that captivates dad, be it sport on TV, being at the match, or talking about old times.

“Sadly, because of Alzheimer’s, he can’t recall what we did earlier today or tie his own shoelaces. It’s an unspeakably awful condition which can only get worse.

“But when he’s at the match, or attending a meeting of the memories club, we get my dad back because he loves to tell the stories about Dewsbury and listen to the memories of other fans.

“The club is also a great way to get to really know people you’ve seen at the games over many years and never really had a chance to speak to.”

There are currently around 850,000 people in the UK suffering from dementia, a figure that is set to increase. This year, an estimated 225,000 people will develop dementia - 60 per cent of whom will be diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, for which there is no cure.

Fans and players of all ages from any club are welcome at the memories club and admission is free. The next meeting takes place on Wednesday, September 13 from 12pm - 2pm.

A STAFF member at an Indian restaurant has organised a third-annual charity walk.

Helal Ahmed, who works at The Spiced Mango in Middlestown, is hoping plenty of people turn out for the 4.5-mile walk this Sunday, September 10, to raise as much money as possible for Kirkwood Hospice and young Leukaemia sufferer Annabel TyzzerSmith, who lives in Middlestown Walkers are asked to meet in the car park of the restaurant on New Road at 12.30pm, as the walk starts at 1pm. Organ appeal MEMBERS of the NHS North Kirklees C l i n i c a l Commissioning Group (CCG) have launched an appeal to encourage more people to talk about organ donation in the hope of saving more lives.

Organ Donation Week (September 410) has seen hospitals, charities and supporters of organ donation prompting people across the UK to discuss with relatives and friends their thoughts on whether they would donate organs.

Over the last year, 35 people in Kirklees have received lifesaving or life-changing transplants - but hundreds of potential transplants are still being missed because families do

not know what relatives’ donation preferences are.

NHS Blood and Transplant surveys show that more than 80 per cent of people support organ donation, but only around 49 per cent of people ever talk about it.

Local GP Dr Steve Ollerton said: “We’re proud to support this life-saving appeal and it’s really easy for everyone to take part and just have a chat.

“That chat might be the next time you sit down for a meal, when you are shopping or working. If you want to be a donor, your family’s support is still needed for donation to go ahead, even if you are on the NHS Organ Donor Register.”

Veteran athlete steps out for Great North Run

BATLEY: A 36-year-old man is accused of breaking into a pensioner's house while it was empty.

James Darbyshire will appear at Leeds Crown Court following allegations of burgling an 83-year-old's home on Staincliffe Hall Road while the occupant was on holiday, on August 30.

He allegedly left blood on a bedroom door handle after smashing a side-door window to gain entry and stealing a television worth £1,000.

Darbyshire, of Centre Street in Heckmondwike, was released on the condition he observes a curfew between 8pm and 8am and also complies with a drug intervention programme, before appearing at Crown Court on October 2.

Court order breach BIRSTALL: A teenager breached his community order so that he could spend time with his friends.

The order was made on Jacob Wrigglesworth, 18, last December for offences of aggravated vehicle taking and dangerous driving. He was told to carry out 120 hours of unpaid work, but missed appointments on August 1 and 8.

Wrigglesworth's probation officer showed up at his home on Shirley Avenue after he gave no explanation for his absences, but his mum said he was out with friends.

Kirklees magistrates sentenced the teen to wear an electronic tag for the next month as punishment, as well as paying £50 in costs.

Church open day MIRFIELD: St Mary's Church is welcoming visitors this weekend as part of the nationwide Heritage Open Days initiative. The church, on Church Lane, will be hosting a series of events on Saturday from 10am-4pm and Sunday from 11am-4pm. Activities include a talk on Mirfield's history by Hilary Brook, a tour to the top of the church tower and an organ recital.

A VETERAN athlete from Dewsbury is gearing up for another Great North Run this weekend.

Michael Luby, 63, will be running his 17th Great North Run this Sunday, September 10 in aid of the Jo Cox Foundation.

He will also be raising funds for the Get Kids Going! charity, which provides disabled children and young people with an opportunity to get involved in the world of sport, and he will split his donations between the two.

Michael said: “I was stunned last year with the senseless murder of Jo and I did promise myself that I’d like to raise as much money as I could for Jo. “I love the Great North Run. I am so lucky that I can keep myself going with the running. I might not be the fastest but I have kept myself quite fit and I’m just going to enjoy whatever happens - I’m really up for it!

“This one is going to the best and most important one yet.”

Michael, who is also set to run the Lanzarote Marathon in December, has completed the race 16 times before and admitted

he is in superb shape this year.

“I’ve never been as fit.

Training has been great,” said Michael.

He added: “I just want to thank all my supporters and everyone in the Dewsbury and Batley areas that have supported me over the last 16 or 17 years.”

In a statement Jo’s family said: “It is very kind of Mike to undertake the Great North Run to raise money for the Jo Cox Foundation.

“Training for a half-marathon is no easy task – the dedication and hard work it takes is admirable, and we are honoured that he has chosen to do so to remember Jo and the values she stood for.

“Mike is a fantastic example of Yorkshire strength, commitment and kindness. Good luck, Mike you will be brilliant.”

Michael will also be running the New York Marathon in November – a race which MP Jo Cox ran herself – to raise money for the same charities.

Care home in special Inquest date set measures for OAP’s death

A HECKMONDWIKE care home has been placed into special measures after being rated as inadequate.

Newlands Hall was previously visited in February last year when Care Quality Commission inspectors highlighted issues with safe care and treatment.

The care home was rated as “requires improvement” and CQC officials returned unannounced in June 2017 and found no improvement in the service.

In fact, two of the five key questions in the report dropped from “requires improvement” to “inadequate”, leaving the CQC no choice but to place it in special measures.

The report said: “Services in special measures will be kept under review and, if we have not taken immediate action to propose to cancel the provider’s registration of the service, will be inspected again within six months.

“The expectation is that providers found to have been providing inadequate care should have made significant improvements within this timeframe.”

It continued: “If not enough improvement is made within this timeframe so that there is still a rating of inadequate for any key question or overall, we will take action in line with our enforcement procedures to begin the process of preventing the provider from operating this service.”

The care home, which provides for up to 30 people living with dementia, was found to have breached regulations in relation to people’s safe care and treatment, recruitment of staff, staffing, consent to care, records and good governance.

There was not enough information about people’s mobility needs and care plans did not tell staff how to assist someone from the floor if they had experienced a number of falls.

Elsewhere in the report, CQC inspectors did judge the home to be caring, stating that staff encouraged residents to retain their independence where possible and respected their privacy.

A spokesman for Regency Healthcare, which runs the home along with six others, said: “As a service we are disappointed that the standard of documentation had dropped below what we would demand of ourselves.

“We have been working very closely with the CQC to review how the home operates, to streamline practice and to improve documentation. Additional support is also being provided to the home. We have already seen improvement across the service.

“A meeting was arranged with the residents and the relatives who were very complimentary of the staff and were happy with the care provided.”

AN INQUEST date has been set to find out more details about how an elderly man from Gomersal suffered a fatal injury at a recycling centre.

Pensioner Geoffrey Malcolm Naylor died in hospital on April 21 last year after visiting the Nab Lane recycling centre in Birstall.

The 82-year-old was unloading some garden waste from his Skoda car when he was hurt.

A man had been helping Mr Naylor unload the waste before the incident happened and his death prompted a police appeal for the witness to come forward.

At the time, the man was described as white, wearing shorts and possibly aged in his 40s.

Mr Naylor’s family released a photograph of the pensioner to the media in the hope that it would trigger someone’s memory.

A two-day inquest will now take place on November 23 and 24. Bradford coroner Martin Fleming said he would be sitting alone, despite the family wanting a jury to be present.

Mr Fleming said: “This is a case that I would be able to do justice to without the necessity of a jury.”

This would include looking at any evidence that may or may not show if the site, operated by Suez Waste and Recycling, could have dealt with the situation better.

Mr Fleming added: “The last thing I would want to do is add to your sense of distress but things are in hand now.”

Police investigating car dealership blaze AN INVESTIGATION is underway to determine the cause of a suspected arson attack on two vehicles at a Dewsbury car dealer.

Police are looking into the blaze just after midnight last Thursday at JCS Car Sales on Huddersfield Road.

The front end of a Vauxhall Corsa and a Vauxhall Zafira were found ablaze and fire crews managed to tackle the flames before calling police.

A spokesman for West Yorkshire Police said: “Police received a report of two vehicles burnt out at a garage on Huddersfield Road, Dewsbury on Thursday, August 31. Enquiries are ongoing.”

The car lot is opposite the Ravenswharfe pub near the Spen Valley Greenway bridge.

Police have appealed for anyone with any information or who saw anything suspicious to contact officers via the 101 number.

News In Brief Sherriff slams cuts to local police forces DEWSBURY: MP Paula Sherriff has questioned the government’s sincerity over its claims of strengthening police forces.

The Labour MP highlighted figures that show since 2010, West Yorkshire Police has lost over 1,000 officers.

The fall is reportedly higher than the national average, with a 22 per cent reduction in officer strength locally compared to 16 per cent across the UK. Police numbers have been cut by over 20,000 since 2010, according to figures, and while crime figures are rising, the number of officers has reached its lowest since 1985.

Ms Sherriff said: “Even as senior police warn they are overstretched, the Tories continue to cut funding.

“They seem to care more about who’s going to replace Theresa May than the everyday issues that people in our area care about: making ends meet, finding good schools and keeping people safe.

“Cuts to front-line police impact on crime.

I’ll keep fighting for our police forces to be properly resourced.”

Teen’s driving ban DEWSBURY: A teenager reached speeds of 90mph in a police pursuit.

The 17-year-old was driving along Vicarage Road in Dewsbury when he caught police attention for having no insurance.

Kirklees magistrates heard that the police instigated a pursuit as the car turned down Longcauseway, and the boy began driving erratically, reaching speeds three times the limit and hurtling down the wrong side of the road. He only stopped the car when a fire seemed to start underneath the vehicle.

He fled and the police detained him after a foot chase.

Magistrates ordered a full report on the boy before he is sentenced on September 25.

He has been banned from driving in the meantime.

No modern signs of trouble at t’mill

“THERE’S trouble at t’mill” has entered into the English vernacular as a humorous reference to any level of conflict - from a couple arguing to a workplace drama.

But there was nothing humorous about the industrial conflicts in 19th-century Kirklees, where some very serious disputes arose between workers and mill owners.

Long hours and low pay, poor working conditions and an often cavalier approach by owners to workers’ welfare, were rife.

In fact, while employment was often plentiful the workers’ lot was scarcely better than those unemployed at times.

The Spen Valley Fame Trail features the sites of such disputes at Rawfolds Mill, attacked by the Luddites in 1812, and St Peg Mills, which stood at the bottom of Spen Lane, where there were the ‘Plug Riots’ in August 1842.

In the Spen Valley Fame Trail leaflet it explains: “Over 30 people were arrested for rioting outside St Peg Mills on August 17, 1842.

“Five-to-six-thousand desperate men and women were confronted by hundreds of special constables, a troop of lancers and a detachment of the Yorkshire Hussars.

The now-empty site of St Peg Mills in Cleckheaton Parliamentary reform (the People’s Charter).

“After drawing two of the three boiler plugs at the mill they were confronted by the military. Fighting broke out on a grand scale. The throng were dispersed without loss of life.”

The ‘Fame Trail’ plaque for the site of this event is pretty inconspicuous. I came across it walking down Spen Lane to Cleckheaton from Gomersal.

At first I thought it was a drain cover in the middle of the pavement, but having cleared dirt away from it I was quickly aware of its relevance.

Sadly, as with so many of these plaques there is little evidence of the event they commemorate.

St Peg Mills have long since disappeared.

The outer wall remains but within that boundary is just wasteland and rubble.

The derelict former engineering works has recently been demolished by owners Tesco, to make the site more attractive to potential developers.

An old mill and riotous behaviour is not something that immediately smacks of historical interest, but so many of the things the working man and woman take for granted these days were fought for nearly two centuries ago.

Amongst other things the ‘People’s Charter’ called for better working conditions, a vote for every man regardless of his position, regular parliamentary elections, the abolition of the qualification for MPs that ensured only those with money and property could stand, and a redrawing of parliamentary boundaries more equally.

The days of a handful of villagers voting the squire of the manor into parliament were numbered.

In the Fame Trail leaflet, four apparently local men were among those arrested at St Peg Mills. Just how local these men were is not known. Charles Leighton, John Hey, Richard Thomson and Thomas Barber were mentioned but nothing more is known.

A quick check of the 1841 census shows a 54-year-old Thomas Barber, a cloth dresser, living in Little Gomersal. Was this our local ‘rebel with a cause’?

Or perhaps it was his 20-year-old coal mining son Thomas, who was presumably working the old Gomersal pit.

Either way, they may have been long forgotten, but the eventual outcome of these men’s protests formed the basis of the rights of the working man today and that will never be forgotten.

The roadside wall on St Peg Lane reveals little

Jail for arsonist’s drunk attempt A DRUNK arsonist has been jailed for setting fire to his own home.

On June 30 Arron David Cooper sent a ‘goodbye’ text message to his mother before setting alight his house on Mortimer Street, Cleckheaton.

The 33-year-old had been drinking heavily and had taken cocaine, a court heard.

He was found by police officers slumped at the top of his stairs with a knife beside him after a concerned neighbour had phoned 999.

Appearing at Leeds Crown Court, Cooper pleaded guilty to arson and being reckless whether lives were endangered or not.

A judge heard that he had been suffering from alcohol and drug problems as well as depression and low moods at the time of the incident.

Rachel Smith, representing Cooper, admitted that he did not remember much of the night in question as he was under the influence but that his aim was seemingly to take his own life.

Judge Rodney Jameson QC told Cooper: “You appear to have drifted into a degree of depression but psychiatric reports on you indicate you were not significantly mentally ill.

“This appears to be an act of considerable selfishness largely triggered by voluntary consumption of drugs and alcohol which is not a mitigation of any kind, rather the reverse.”

He said Cooper had not only endangered his own life but those of others living nearby, including two young children on the same street.

He was jailed for three-and-a-half years.

Toddlers are killed in motorway horror

By Staff Reporters A TWO-MONTH old boy and a 19month old girl died following a motorway crash that also left their mother fighting for her life in hospital.

The young family, believed to be from Batley, were involved in the collision last Sunday when the car they were travelling in careered off the westbound M62 carriageway.

The children’s mother, who is in her 20s, was a passenger in the Honda Jazz and remains in hospital in a serious condition.

It is thought that the driver, the children’s father, lost control of the car trying to avoid another vehicle and came off the motorway between

the Whitley Bridge and Ferrybridge junctions at around 3.30pm.

Air ambulance and fire crews were called to the scene in North Yorkshire and the two children were taken to hospital, but were pronounced dead on Monday.

The father, also in his 20s, was treated for minor injuries after the crash.

Traffic sergeant Hamish Halloway, who attended the scene, said: “I’d like to extend my deepest sympathies to the family involved following this tragic incident.

“Any fatal collision is deeply upsetting for the families involved but it’s impossible to imagine the horrific ordeal this family is currently going through.

News In Brief Big charity boost KIRKLEES: The former Mayor of Kirklees has presented his chosen charity with a large cheque. Coun Jim Dodds, with help from local businesses and organisations, and a charity committee, has raised over £60,000 for the Royal British Legion.

Coun Dodds served for 35 years in the Royal Signals and presented the RBL charity with the cheque of £60,361.73.

He said: “A really big thank you to all who contributed.”

“I’d like to thank the members of the public who stopped to help, in particular the driver of a white HGV who was not involved in the collision but gave a massive amount of assistance to the family at the scene.”

Police are investigating the crash and are appealing for information from other motorists.

They are also looking for anyone who could have dashcam footage that may help investigations.

Everyone from beginner to expert is welcome to the Spen Valley Riding Club’s inaugural showcase on Sunday, September 17, at Crossley Farm in Mirfield.

There will be the chance to complete a farm ride with rustic jumps and access to routes previously unavailable to anyone, as well as taking part in a fancy-dress class and clear-round show jumping.

The day starts at 9am and finishes at 5pm, with the farm ride opening from 10am-3.30pm and the clearround jumping from 10.30am.

The novelty show ring opens at 12.30pm.

Brass band at St Saviour’s A POPULAR local brass band is staging a money-raising concert later this month.

LIVERSEDGE FC were knocked out of the FA Cup on Tuesday night, going down 40 at home to Sunderland RCA in their First Qualifying Round replay.

There was nothing to split the two teams in the initial game last Saturday, September 2, with the 0-0 result earning both sides another bite of the cherry.

It was Sunderland who came out on top in the replay though, despite a battling Sedge performance.

It took only four minutes for the away side to open the scoring, but this didn’t stop

Sedge having their fair share of play in the early stages.

Sedge remained on top during the first half, but Sunderland always looked dangerous on the counter attack.

The half time score stood at 1-0.

A calamity of defensive errors for Sedge handed Sunderland a second.

Waggett dropped a corner before the ball rebounded into the net off Jackson for an own goal.

Sunderland made it 3-0 in the 88th minute through a strong strike from the edge of

the box into the bottom corner, before adding a forth in the final minute.

Sedge were down to 10 men for the last 20 minutes following an injury.

The defeat will not dishearten Sedge, who have enjoyed their best FA Cup run in years, beating higher league opposition along the way.

Sedge remain unbeaten in the league and have a great chance to bounce back tomorrow as they face Prestwich Heys away in the First Round of the FA Vase competition.

Linthwaite dominant in Heavy Woollen opener THE NEW Heavy Woollen Sunday League season kicked off last weekend and last season’s Championship winners Linthwaite got off to the perfect start in the Premier Division with a 7-1 win over Mirfield Town.

Aaron Joseph and Martin Poole hit doubles for Linthwaite, who had Joshua Shields, Steve Richards and an own goal to thank for their tally.

Kyle Douglas replied for Mirfield.

Last season’s Champions St John Fisher were held to a 4-4 draw against Birstall Cricket Club despite Kieran Senior’s four goals.

Birstall earned a point through Joe Lyttle, Daz Fothergill, Johnny Beverley and Lee Ryan.

Saville Arms enjoyed a 4-1 win over AFC Chickenley thanks to strikes from Adam Hill (two), Dean Vernon and Nathan Rogerson.

Clifton Rangers are the early pacesetters in the Championship after Brad Birkhead (four), Andrew Wojciechowski (two) and Alex Barnes all netted in a 7-1 win over Wellington Westgate.

The Yorkshireman lie second after they won 7-4 against Hanging Heaton Cricket Club, who had Mark Inwood (brace), Jamie Baulk and Joe Jagger on the scoresheet.

Mount Pleasant opened up their campaign with a 4-1 win over Ravenswharfe thanks to a double from Abdullah Aswat, plus strikes from Ismail Loonat and Abdullah Mayet.

Ravenswharfe replied through Sam Hewitt.

Deighton WMC won 3-2 at Old Bank WMC who netted through Robert Evans and Tim Bruce.

Nolan St Hilaire, Eddie Hamlet and Danny Hawkland all found the net as Wire Works won 3-0 at Scholes Athletic.

Birstall St Patricks lead Division One after Joe Ratcliffe (two), Gary Milligan, Matthew Sharp, Ryan Fletcher and Kieran Cooper all netted in a 6-0 win over Linthwaite Reserves.

Albion Women gear up for derby OSSETT ALBION’S FA Womens Cup venture proved short-lived as they crashed 5-0 at home to Premier Division Farsley Celtic in an all-North East Regional League tie.

Southern Division Albion are now focusing their attention on the League

Cup with a derby clash against Wakefield at Dimple Wells on Sunday.

Wakefield are another Premier Division side, but they have struggled in the top flight and in last week's FA Cup tie they needed extra time to see off Southern section side Malet

THERE was no time to rest for nine-year-old tennis talent Taylor Aitcheson during the summer holidays.

The Dewsbury youngster had an action-packed August, during which he won the Under-10s competition at the Bellingham Open in Wigan, was a semi-finalist in his age group at the Yorkshire Open Championships in Leeds and reached the quarter-finals of the Wigan Tennis Open.

The St Joseph’s pupil has also set up his own Facebook fundraising page called ‘Taylor and the Charity Fundraisers’, in order to support several children's charities.

In July he organised a sponsored one-mile walk for the children's cancer charity

TALENT: Taylor competed in three tournaments over Summer Candlelighters and last Sunday, Taylor presented representatives from the

charity with a cheque for £4,738.

An online sports website called ‘Click on Media’ who have bases in Los Angeles and London asked if they could do a short documentary on Taylor and his achievements.

On August 23 and 24 the company travelled up from London and spent two days filming Taylor playing tennis and his everyday life.

They said it was a pleasure to work with Taylor and that he is such a polite and selfless child.

Taylor’s selfless character has been demonstrated through the success of his fundraising efforts and he hopes to arrange three to four events a year.

Hanging Heaton claim title in style THEY’VE done it – and with a week to spare!

Hanging Heaton skipper Gary Fellows lifted the Bradford League Premier Division trophy after an emphatic 219-run win over relegation-threatened East Bierley.

It is 18 years since their last title, but having recovered from the ignominy of relegation in 2009, under the guidance of cricket chairman John Carruthers, Hanging Heaton have slowly restructured and rebuilt.

It was an early return to the top flight in 2010, with the Second Division title, and the steady improvement was given a further boost with the acquisition of former Pudsey St Lawrence and Yorkshire all-rounder Fellows, from the then CYL champions Wrenthorpe, in 2013.

Fellows made his first-class debut as a teenager playing for Matebeleland.

But a game for Yorkshire against a touring India A side in

CHAMPIONS: Hanging Heaton clinched the title with a week to spare 2003, just before his 25th birthday, was his last.

In that last game he scored a handful of runs and claimed the wicket of former Indian spinner Murali Kartik, but it was the end of a career that had brought him over 1,500 runs, including one century, and 32 wickets.

However, it is as a top-class league cricketer he has really

made his name.

In his five years at Bennett Lane he has proved to be a key piece of the jigsaw with runs, wickets and, most importantly, his captaincy.

Having finished runners-up last season, his 860 runs to date make him this season’s secondhighest Premier Division run scorer.

He is only 97 runs short of joining the select band of players to score 10,000 Bradford League runs.

Going into the final game of the season at his old club Pudsey St Lawrence tomorrow, Fellows needs 140 to join opening partner Nick Connolly on the 1,000-run mark for the season and become part of the first duo to pass that landmark in the same season in the league’s 114-year history.

After the win over Bierley, a proud Fellows told the Bradford League’s Alan Birkinshaw: “I have played for 15 years in the Bradford League in my two spells and this is the first time I have been in a league-winning side.

“In fact, not one member of our side has been in a championshipwinning team. It is a proud moment for us and for the club.

“We have been close in recent years but now we have gone on to win the title. It is a reward for all the hard work that has been done on, and off, the field.”

SKIPPER: Gary Fellows lifts the Premier Division trophy

Four face danger of relegation heading into last round WITH the Premier Division already decided, tomorrow sees the focus very firmly fixed on the relegation battle.

There cannot have been many occasions in the top flight when the last week of the season threw up the possibility of any two from four being relegated, but that is the prospect facing Cleckheaton, Batley, East Bierley and Pudsey Congs.

They are all at home, to Lightcliffe Woodlands, Bradford and Bingley and New Farnley, respectively.

A crucial seven-wicket win at

Bingley for Cleckheaton could not have been more timely.

Having bowled the home side out for 129, skipper John Wood taking 441, Cleckheaton recovered from a faltering 35-3 to ease home by seven wickets thanks to an unbroken 95-run stand between Andy Gorrod (57) and Mally Nicholson (48) for the fourth wicket.

Wood’s men now need just five points from their last game to be absolutely certain of survival.

Only three points separate the other three teams, so four points

more than their rivals equals safety.

In Championship One, where there are two games to play, the uncertainty persists at both ends of the table.

However, for leaders Scholes it is a ‘death or glory’ situation as they go to second-placed Methley tomorrow and then third-placed Wrenthorpe.

A defeat for Methley in their game at fourth-placed Undercliffe paved the way for Scholes’ return to the top thanks to a 246-run win over Ossett.

Sam Gatenby’s 111 helped Scholes to 319-3 in that game, before Chris Jackson’s 6-21 helped reduced

Ossett to 27-8 on their way to 73 all out.

That defeat thrust Ossett back into the relegation mix ahead of their crucial game tomorrow at Morley, but it is all over for Birstall who could yet help determine Bowling Old Lane’s fate when the Bradford side visit Leeds Road tomorrow.

Birstall are 52 points behind Old Lane, but the Bradford side are just four adrift of Yeadon and 10 behind Ossett.

The Championship Two title has long been decided in favour of

Hartshead Moor, but confusion reigns at the other end of the table as the promotion and relegation plans between Championship Two and the Conference have yet to be be decided.

Spen Victoria’s fate was decided when, despite beating Liversedge at Spen Lane, Brighouse and Hopton Mills were both victorious and now battle it out between themselves for survival.

Tomorrow Hopton Mills go to Hunslet Nelson while Brighouse are at home to Carlton.

Hancock the hero for Town Tasleet a solid each-way pick H

OSSETT TOWN defeated Northern League side Consett AFC 2-1 last Saturday, September 2 to progress to the Second Qualifying Round of the Emirates FA Cup. The opening exchanges showed that the visitors were a well-organised side and early on they tested Leigh Overton in the Ossett goal with right winger Shaun Ryder causing problems with his pace and direct approach play.

The Consett back four held a very high line and the Reds forwards found themselves in offside positions far too often.

Consett looked dangerous on the attack and in form striker Michael Sweet hit a fierce volley but Overton was equal to the effort as he tipped the ball over the bar at full stretch.

Minutes later it was no. 9 Sweet again who saw his shot rebound off the post and out for a goal kick.

At the other end Ossett were creating chances. The best fell to Kai Hancock who found himself one on one with the

keeper eight yards out, but he was denied as his left foot shot was saved by the outstretched leg of Ross Coombe in the visitors’ goal.

In added time of the first half, Danny Craggs received the ball on the edge of the box and drilled a low shot through a crowded penalty area into the bottom corner of the net to give Consett a deserved 1-0 lead at half-time.

At half-time Grant Black changed the formation into 33-4, replacing Danny Gibbons with Issac Assenso and moving Steve Ridley from left back up into midfield.

This left Alex Low, Assenso and Josh Snowden as a back three.

With a more attacking look about them the Reds started to put pressure on the visitors and it paid off when they won a free kick.

Ridley curled the free kick into the box and keeper Coombe half-heartedly attempted to collect the ball.

Alex Peterson beat him to it

and headed the ball into the net to level the score at 1-1.

Consett were straight back on the attack and their danger man Sweet was once again denied by a superb save from Overton.

A period of end-to-end play resulted in the Reds breaking on the right.

As the ball was crossed, the Consett centre back headed the ball out to the feet of Hancock.

He hit the ball down into the ground and over the keeper into the net to see Ossett take a 2-1 lead.

Consett then went all out to find an equaliser again hitting the post for a third time.

Some resolute defending from the back three kept the visitors at bay, assisted not for the first time by some unbelievable saves from Overton, who frustrated the visitors.

Town have been drawn against Atherton Collieries in the next round, who also happen to be their opponents in the league tomorrow.

Albion defeated by Shields OSSETT ALBION lost 3-1 away at newly-promoted South Shields on Tuesday evening.

The deadlock was broken early on in the second half, when Shields’ Jamie Holmes netted for the home side in the 46th minute.

A Louis Storey header doubled their lead in the 73rd minute, before Albion’s Callum Charlton got one back for his side, finding the

roof of the net two minutes later.

Shields responded however, as Holmes got his second of the night and the home side’s third in front of the 1,438-strong crowd.

Albion’s defeat followed a 0-0 draw at home to Brighouse Town last Saturday (September 2).

They face Glossop North End at home tomorrow.

ENRY CANDY’S plans to bring LIMATO back to the racecourse in tomorrow’s (Saturday) Sprint Cup at Haydock have once again been scuppered by the weather.

Haydock has seen 19mm of rain already this week with more forecast, and Candy said: “It is very doubtful he’ll run at Haydock. He’s in good form, but I think the ground will be too soft and there’s more rain forecast.”

Limato, who had been as short as 7-1, also holds an entry in the Garrowby Stakes at York on Sunday, but Candy added: “Unfortunately, I think the same applies to York on Sunday, which is a shame, as that would have been a nice race for him as he didn’t have a penalty in that.”

With the ground already officially good-to-soft, Haydock announced on Wednesday that the £260,000 contest will be brought forward and run as the third race on Saturday at 2.25 to ensure the freshest ground.

Favourite HARRY ANGEL won the Mill Reef on similar ground as a two-year-old but Godolphin’s BLUEPOINT, albeit untested on soft, beat the jolly by a length-and-ahalf at Ascot in May in a Group 3 and has to be respected.

Charlie Hills likes MAGICAL MEMORY’S chances.

He was a close third two years ago and ran a good race on soft when winning the Hackwood Stakes, and the Lambourn handler said: “We think we’ve got him back where he needs to be but we’ll see whether he’s good enough to win a Group 1.”

My each-way pick is TASLEET for Yorkshire-born trainer William Haggas, who won the Duke of York on a soft Knavesmire in May and will relish a flat track. Mark Johnstone’s TIME TO STUDY likes some cut and is likely to turn up in one of the 1m6f handicaps and should form part of your weekend race swotting.

Meanwhile, officials at the Curragh remain upbeat about the condition of the track ahead of day two of the Irish Champions Weekend on Sunday.

The ground is currently soft on the straight course and yielding-to-soft on the round course after 12mm of rain fell at the County Kildare venue overnight on Monday.

EMINENT goes there with a fighting chance of spoiling Aidan O’Brien’s hopes of gaining an eighth win in the Irish Champions Stakes (6.45) He does of course have ground to make up on Churchill on 2,000 Guineas form but things didn’t really pan out for him that day when he was given a tactical, hold-up ride. But I expect sixtime race winner Frankie Dettori to kick on and let Eminent use his stride this time.

O’Brien’s WINTER looks a shoe-in for the Matron (5.35), and despite following the inconsistent COTAI GLORY off a cliff this season I will throw more each-way dough at him in the Flying Five Stakes (3.05).

Back in the White Rose county the unexposed HEE HAW can defy the weights to win York’s closer at 5.20, while Richard Fahey can have another touch in the 3.00 with DON’T TOUCH. IT WAS a very relieved Thornhill Trojans that made the long journey home from Millom on Saturday evening.

The Trojans seemed to be going through the motions for long periods of the game with no-one seemingly able to take a lead.

The official man of the match rightly went to Liam Morley in trying circumstances.

Will Poching also caught the eye with his enthusiasm, as did the strong-running Lee Smith.

From the kick off Thornhill immediately took play to the Millom tryline. Will Gledhill timed his run to perfection to run off a pass from Danny Ratcliffe and cross for an unconverted try.

A missed tackle close to the Trojans’ tryline proved that Thornhill were vulnerable.

The gap opened up and Joe Wright powered over for a try which Lee Posslethwaite converted.

Sensing an opportunity, the

Millom team began to test their visitors, preventing them making any impression on the game.

Thornhill remained strong though and weathered the storm to work their way up field towards the Millom line.

A good passing move from Thornhill saw the ball travel at speed along the attacking line.

A brilliant pass from Andrew Lambert picked out winger Ryan Fenton, who collected the pass to dive over for a try in the corner.

Ratcliffe converted from the touchline.

But once again Thornhill showed their vulnerability with some poor defending close to their own line.

Dave Kelly took the ball forward for Millom and skipped around a wrong-footed defender to cross by the posts. Posslethwaite converted.

This score saw Millom lead 12-10 at the interval.

From the restart Luke Haigh made a dart for the try line and reached out to plant the ball down for a much-needed score.

Thornhill were then handed an extra-man advantage when Niall Harris was sent to the sin bin for speaking out of turn to the referee.

Straight after this sin binning Thornhill made Millom pay.

George Stott and Gledhill made good yards for the away side. Tom Gledhill then charged over for a try which George Woodcock converted.

The game then suddenly turned ugly when a melée erupted.

Once tempers had calmed down the referee showed Millom’s Ethan Kelly a red card for running in and throwing a punch.

Play restarted and Thornhill once again made Millom pay for their indiscipline.

Morley made a charge for the line and reached out to score an unconverted try.

Stott looked to have scored for the Trojans to make the game certain but the referee waved the try away due to a forward pass.

Late in the game Millom scored a try through Dom O’Brien and Posslethwaite converted.

Thornhill hung on though and were relieved when the referee blew for full time.

The Trojans sit one point behind leaders Oulton Raiders as they continue to chase the title.

Tomorrow (Sat) they face a home tie against Askam at 2.30pm.

SHAW CROSS SHARKS won for the first time since the beginning of July, producing a gutsy performance against third-placed Milford Marlins.

The Sharks moved three points clear of the relegation places and with only three games left to play, a win next week could be enough for them to secure their Division One status for another year.

Stand-in head coach Andrew Fawkes was ecstatic with the performance from his players.

“Against all odds we came out with the win, the lads dug deep today and played with some heart,” said Fawkes.

“Our lads wanted it today, their backs were against the wall and they put their heart and soul into absolutely everything.

“We defended our line for several sets and managed to keep them out, I think we held them up four or five times.

“We have not had a great season but there are not many teams who will come to Milford and turn them over so it is a really big win for us at this point in the season.”

Things looked grim for Shaw Cross ahead of kick-off

as only 16 men were named on the team sheet.

However it was the Sharks who opened the scoring inside the first minute as Paul March received the ball on the last tackle and dinked the ball over the Milford line.

Nathan Wright picked the ball up and attempted to throw a pass back inside to Danny Flowers.

The Marlins intercepted, but a big hit from Flowers and Wright forced the ball loose and Tom Rodgers latched onto it and found March who raced clear to score.

Minutes later the visitors doubled their lead through Wright. Casey Johnson offloaded the ball to Jamie Searby who in turn sent it wide to Flowers who flicked the ball brilliantly to Wright who dived over in the corner.

Shaw Cross were then forced into defending their line and held out valiantly for the majority of the half.

Milford finally managed to penetrate the away defence as Matt Brocksom stumbled over in the corner.

At the beginning of the second half Shaw Cross were temporarily down to 12 men as Rodgers was yellow carded for dissent.

However Johnson then earned the Sharks a penalty as he charged down a kick and raced 70 metres before being

brought down. The referee then found Milford guilty of holding Johnson down and sent the tackler to the sin bin for a professional foul.

The powerful forward opted to kick for goal and stretched the Sharks’ lead to 10 points.

Milford then drew level with two tries in a matter of minutes.

Josh Parke broke the line and darted over on the lefthand side.

The hosts forced their way over in the opposite corner to level proceedings.

Shaw Cross soon regained the lead as Ash Lindsay received the ball and fainted to kick before passing to Joe Buggle who crashed over beside the uprights.

March then kicked only the second drop goal of his career to put the game out of Milford’s reach.

The hosts did get to within one point of the visitors as the left centre made use of some poor defending to score in behind the posts.

With only minutes left on the clock, Andrew Tillotson sealed the win for Shaw Cross as he went from dummy half and ghosted in underneath the posts sparking jubilant celebrations.

Tomorrow the Sharks host bottom-club Blackbrook at Shark Park – kick-off 2.30pm.

JUNIOR RUGBY LEAGUE SHAW CROSS SHARKS UNDER-12S returned to action following the summer break at home to Birstall Victoria.

The visitors quickly took hold of the game racing in to an 18-0 lead.

The Sharks eventually got themselves back into the game, joint players’ man of the match Nathan Littlewood posted two converted tries either side of halftime and Shaw Cross restricted Birstall to only six points in the second period.

Coaches’ and parents’ man of the match, Nathan Smith, added a converted try and Oliver

Boocock collected a neat kick in the dying seconds of the game to touch down.

Unfortunately for the home side, the extra two points went begging, giving Birstall the narrow victory.

There was a welcome return to Sharks for Amir Kadir following a lengthy period out with injury. His presence on the field was noted as Birstall chose him as their man of the match, while Max Sheard shared the players’ vote with Littlewood.

DEWSBURY CELTIC threw away an 18-0 lead on Saturday as they were defeated by Stanley Rangers at Park Parade.

Tries from Dom Senior, Paul Foulstone and Billy Yarrow plus three Foulstone goals against a Sam Swire try gave them a 14-0 half-time

lead. Matt Ginnelly (Celtic) and Jordan Walker (Rangers) were sin-binned for punching.

The only other Celtic points were a lastminute James Walker try and Foulstone conversion.

Before that Marcus Stock, Jack Ledger, Martin Holland, Lee Alderson (two) and Joe Campbell scored for Stanley.

Celtic sit 10th in the table, four points ahead of bottom-placed Waterhead Warr.

CLECKHEATON RUFC took the long and traffic-laden trip up to Penrith for their first league game of the 2017/18 season last Saturday.

Penrith, on paper, are one of the strongest sides in the league, after finishing runners up and narrowly missing out on promotion last year.

The bus journey was not ideal due to an accident on the M6, meaning a three-hour trip with no stop off to stretch the legs en route.

This took its toll on Cleckheaton, who started slightly off the pace and with a handling error and a missed tackle found themselves trailing 12-0 in as many minutes.

Mike Swetman converted a penalty goal for Cleck giving them their first points on the board and shortly after, the game’s best try was scored.

Mike Hayward broke away from his own 22, gliding upfield at pace before feeding

the supporting Ronan Evans for an excellent try.

Swetman converted from close to the touchline side and Cleckheaton were back in it at the break.

Early in the second half, Ben Thrower entered the ruck from the side and Penrith were given a penalty, which they tapped immediately.

With Cleckheaton’s defensive line not yet established, the home side executed a simple two-on-one for another try.

Cleckheaton’s woes continued as Jack Seddon was sinbinned, somewhat harshly, for a technical offence, and during his 10 minutes on the sideline Penrith went in for two more tries to effectively seal their victory.

Cleckheaton did not give up though and despite trailing 31-10, upped the intensity to a level that would have surely given them the spoils if only they had started the match in a similar fashion.

Several Cleckheaton forwards went close before Hayward tiptoed in down the touchline.

Cleckheaton threw the ball

around with vigour in the last 10 minutes but when a tap-back from a Cleckheaton cross-field kick was intercepted by a Penrith player, the Cumbrians went in for their sixth and final try.

The West Yorkshire men had the last say however when Evans went in for his second after excellent handling from Matt Piper and Swetman.

The final score of 38-20 slightly flattered the home side.

Cleckheaton’s mistakes gifted Penrith tries and with a little tightening up in defence, the Moorenders could easily have taken the spoils.

This weekend the team travel up the road to Wagon Lane to play Bradford & Bingley, where old rivalries can once again be rejuvenated in what is the first local derby of Cleckheaton’s season.

On the topic of local derbies, both the second team and third team host Old Brodleians this weekend, with the seconds at Moorend and the thirds at Whitcliffe.

Both kick off at 3pm.

Michael Hale at the Fox’s Biscuits Stadium DEWSBURY Rams coach Neil Kelly questioned his players’ attitudes after falling to a crushing Heavy Woollen derby defeat at the hands of Batley Bulldogs.

Batley dominated throughout the game, with Dewsbury’s poor defence being matched by an equally bad offensive display.

An angry Kelly was left wondering what happened to his side – turning from the Championship’s form side to being embarrassed by their local rivals.

“It’s very hard to talk about my thoughts without using expletives,” said Kelly. “Obviously I’m really disappointed.

“I just want to get back to being the team we were two weeks ago and showing the attitude we were two weeks ago.

“The season’s still got two weeks to go and it’s important we get back to being the side we were against Sheffield and Toulouse, not this pale reflection of a side.

“All teams have players playing out of position at this time of year but they don’t concede 38 points at their local rivals.

“I thought we gifted them two tries, or gifted them the position to score two tries. That’s an attitude thing.”

A number of handling errors nearly saw Batley take an early lead however Jason Crookes’s effort was ruled out for a forward pass.

Reittie was over for his second just four minutes later as he took in a short pass and crashed over the whitewash.

Dom Speakman forced two successive goal-line drop-outs but his side couldn’t take advantage of them or the consecutive penalties deep in Batley territory.

Batley edged further ahead on the brink of half-time as Dane Manning broke a number of tackles to bundle over.

Lucas Walshaw looked set to bring Dewsbury onto the board just a minute after the restart after picking up a loose ball but his offload could only find Batley’s James Harrison.

And they were ruing that miss less than five minutes later as Reittie completed his hat-trick in some style.

Batley earned a penalty on the lefthand side and worked the ball across to the right where the winger acrobatically finished in the corner.

Reittie wasn’t finished there however as he placed down his fourth and Batley’s fifth try.

Sam Day was held up as the Rams still couldn’t break down the resolute but rarely tested Batley defence.

Manning extended Batley’s lead further with another individual effort to cap a fine display off with his brace.

And with five minutes remaining, the hosts completed the rout with their seventh try.

After James Glover had cheaply coughed up possession, Alex Rowe managed to get the ball down despite being surrounded by three Dewsbury players.

Reittie understandably took the plaudits from the game but Batley boss Matt Diskin was keen to praise his side’s performance across the board.

“I thought we physically dominated Dewsbury, defensively we were outstanding,” said Diskin.

“Wayne Reittie is a great finisher in the game and he had Sam Smeaton inside feeding him.

“We also had Dane Manning who I thought was exceptional today, he came up with one or two big plays and put it on a plate for Wayne. Our middles did really well and they’re often overlooked.”

The Rams will face Bradford Bulls at home on Sunday, whilst tomorrow’s top of the table clash sees Batley travel to Toulouse, who currently sit seven points clear of Diskin’s side.

Diskin has described his team’s three trips to France as “frustrating”.

“For part-time teams it is a bit of a logistical nightmare,” he said.

“I don’t think the RFL have thought it through. I will have a few players unavailable because they can’t get additional holidays off work.

“It is tough, we have got a steady trip but when you look at what Sheffield and Rochdale are going through at the moment it is ridiculous and it should never be expected of part-time teams.

“The RFL have to find a way to make it run more smoothly because at the moment it is a bit of a joke.

“I have got players who have been refused holidays from their workplace and if they do take holidays they will have to take it as unpaid leave, which is not something they can afford to do,” said Diskin.

“For part-time teams it is not right, it makes it an uneven playing field and the RFL need to find a solution for it.”

Hunter touches down for Maroons Richardson stars in vital Moor win

A 24-HOUR flight covering over 10,000 miles was not enough to stop new Dewsbury Moor Maroons recruit Braden Hunter from pulling on his boots for training last Thursday (August 31), just two hours after his plane hit the tarmac at Manchester Airport.

Twenty-one-year-old Hunter, originally from Birstall, has spent the past eight months playing rugby league in southwest New South Wales for the Tumbarumba Greens, within a tiny town populated by under 2,000 people at the western edge of the Snowy Mountains.

The Greens’ season finished in August, allowing Hunter the chance to come back home and help the Maroons in their push for promotion into NCL Division Two. Despite landing just two hours before training last Thursday, Hunter attended the session that evening and then went on to help his side in their 40-22 away win over Eastmoor Dragons last Saturday, even crossing for a try.

Prior to his venture down under, Hunter had experience playing for teams including the Great Britain BARLA U23 and U19 sides, Mirfield Stags, Birstall Victoria and Drighlington.

Now he is hoping to take what he has learnt in Australia into his performances for the Maroons.

“The standard of rugby out there was the highest I’ve played at, it’s so quick and physical and you always have to be ready for anything,” said Hunter.

“I wasn’t going to play when I got back to give myself a rest, but I knew Moor were pushing for promotion to the next division.

“I’m hoping to add to their success and take them up, I’m keen to show

Kelly says preparation is key for Rams RAMS COACH Neil Kelly says drawing a balance between rest and progression is crucial as his side approach their final two Championship Shield games before the semi-final.

The Dewsbury boss is hoping his side bounce back from a heavy defeat at the hands of Batley when they face Bradford this weekend.

“I thought we put in a really good, workmanlike performance in the first half, playing uphill at Batley,” said Kelly.

“Our second-half performance lacked ambition, character and spirit.

“We know we possess it because we showed that against Sheffield, Toulouse, Rochdale and in all the other games, but it wasn’t present in last weekend’s performance.

“We have had some signifi-

cant injuries, but I’m not one to blame injuries,” he added.

“I would rather look at the players that are playing, and I thought that the players playing on Sunday were far better than 38-0.

“There is no shame losing at Batley as long as it’s a competitive scoreline, but 38-0 leaves you open for criticism,” said Kelly.

The Rams sit fourth in the Championship Shield table, just two points behind Sheffield, who were beaten by the Bulls last weekend.

Kelly has received welldeserved praise for how he has turned the Rams around and admitted it may have come as a shock even to his own players.

“I’m conscious that we have maybe achieved more than what even possibly the playing

group thought they could achieve,” he said.

“The performance against Batley, and to a certain extent Swinton the week before, can only knock a small amount of polish off the season.

“But saying that, we have got another two league games to go and a big semi-final that will probably be in Toulouse, although Sheffield seem to be doing as much as they can to

let us overtake them.

“The good thing about rugby league is that you’re never resting on your laurels, you can always think, we’ve done this, so what can we do next.”

Kelly insists he will be thinking hard about what moves to make over the next couple of

weeks.

“I need to use the Bradford and Oldham games to build, but at the same time rest,” he said.

“I know this seems like a contradiction because you can’t really build when you’re resting players, but we need to be smart.

“In chasing a victory against Bradford and Oldham we don’t want to preclude our chances of winning at Toulouse.

“I want to go to Toulouse with the best side possible on the day,” he said.

This week also marks the eighth anniversary of Dewsbury’s ‘invincible’ season.

Diskin slams RFL’s ‘lack of respect’

By Kayley Dickinson BATLEY boss Matt Diskin has criticised the rugby league authorities for not paying enough respect to competitions below Super League.

Diskin’s Bulldogs side will travel to Toulouse tomorrow for the third time this season – something he believes is a ridiculous expectation placed on parttime clubs.

“I am really struggling for players this week due to them having to utilise holidays or take unpaid leave, some of them can’t afford do that, they have bills to pay,” said Diskin.

“I just don’t see how it is practical or reasonable to expect part-time clubs to sustain this.

“Regarding the competition next year, there’s Toronto, Toulouse and potentially Catalans in there and I don’t see how the RFL can expect part-time teams to accommodate for it.

“I’m not saying that having teams such as Toulouse in the competition isn’t good for the game, but I do think we sometimes do things at the expense of clubs back home, and those who have a lot of history with rugby league are neglected as a result,” he said.

The former Bulls player believes the RFL need better direction when it comes to investing and promoting the sport to ensure no-one suffers.

“I think the European teams are massive for making us a national and international sport, because if you take London and Catalans out of the equation, we’re a north of England, regional sport, we can’t play blind to that,” said Diskin.

“Going forward though, we need to look at some of the heartlands of rugby league, such as Cumbria and Lancashire.

FRUSTRATED: Diskin wants fairness across the sport “These sorts of areas haven’t got as many juniors playing the game as they had 10, 20 years ago.

“Is that because the popularity of rugby league is reducing or is it because we have taken our eye off the ball and put the money and resources into areas less associated with the sport?”

The Bulldogs currently sit second in the Championship Shield standings, seven points clear of third-placed Sheffield and seven behind leaders Toulouse.

Diskin’s men are expecting a tough test tomorrow as both sides look to prepare for the semi-finals, but a dominant win against rivals Dewsbury last weekend ensured they will head across the Channel full of confidence.

“Toulouse were unlucky to miss out on the top four, they play some great attacking rugby, but equally this is what

we will look to do this weekend,” said Diskin.

“At the start of the year the Shield wasn’t something we talked about, we had aspirations for top four, but we fell short of that during the regular season which was disappointing and we’ll look at that in the off-season.

“The next best thing we have got is to have a really good run in the Shield competition, strive to make the final and with a bit of luck on the day we could come away with it.

“We know that on our day we are capable of it, but we also know there are some very talented teams around us,” he said.

Diskin also believes those at the top of rugby league fail to give enough credit to competitions such as the Championship and League One and the quality produced on a weekly basis.

“The Championship is a really good competition, it’s a tough league offering a mix and variance, yet it’s looked down upon by those above,” he said.

“You’ve got officials that are good, some are indifferent, which makes a constant talking point, you’ve got very very talented players and you’ve got young kids striving to take a step forward.

“People from the RFL and the Super League look down their noses at it and there’s no coverage whatsoever, there has not been one game on this year.

“There is a real lack of respect for the sport and for competitions at any level below Super League,” said Diskin.

“It’s a fantastic competition, it’s just a shame it has a real lack of respect thrown towards it by those higher up the chain.

“The game is never going to grow while it has such an elitist mentality,” he added.

“I am a little bit surprised, but not a lot, my daughters are more concerned about it than I am!” said Kelly.

EUROPE: Batley Xplosion will travel to Paris next March

Batley Xplosion cheering for Paris THE BATLEY Bulldogs Cheerleaders will join hundreds of teams from across Europe when they travel to Paris next March.

The group, who perform regular routines at Bulldogs home games, will face stiff competition in the ‘FC Brings It On’ event, which will be held at Disneyland, Paris.

The Batley Xplosion cheerleaders will spend three days at the resort.

The group will have access to both theme parks including queuejump tickets, a meet and greet with Disney characters and the chance to take part in the renowned Disneyland parade.

Head coach and community dance manager for Batley Bulldogs and Batley Xplosion, Olivia Scott, says her team are more than capable of the challenge.

“The girls are extremely excited to be offered the opportunity to showcase their hard work in front of the biggest stage,” said Olivia.

“It has been a long time coming and they have been working incredibly hard over the last four years to get to the level they are at now.”

Olivia is hoping the team can build on the

triumphs they have already achieved.

“It’s one thing performing at the local rugby games but a completely different challenge taking on European countries in a competition like this,” she said.

“The group have entered competitions in Glasgow and Birmingham and they raised the bar for quite a lot of the teams they went head-to-head with.

“We came away with 12 trophies in one year, placing first to fifth with sometimes over 14 other teams in the category and division they were in.

“It was seeing the way they handled their success and their defeat that helped me decide they were ready to take this on.”

For the last four years the girls have trained for up to 10 hours a week, three days a week, perfecting routines in hiphop, pom dance, solo performances, stunt groups and all-star cheerleading.

“When the time comes they will show people just what they’re made of - the rest of the UK and Europe need to remember West Yorkshire girls are made of different stuff, they won’t go down without a bang,” she said.
