RIVERSIDE ROAD RAGE Development debated at inquiry By Staff Reporters AS MANY AS 2,000 homes could be built on green belt land without the need for a new road, according to council officials. Discussing proposals for the Dewsbury Riverside housing scheme at a public inquiry in Batley this week, highway officials said the first batch of homes – out of the 4,000 planned in total for the site – could go ahead on the open space between Mirfield and Ravensthorpe. Campaigners raised concerns that the already-congested nearby A644 Huddersfield Road would be further impacted if the scheme was given the nod. The road through Ravensthorpe is often gridlocked at peak times, particularly around the gyratory.

Developers Miller Homes, who are spearheading the project, said they have allocated £20million to go towards building a new road and bridge over the rail line on to the site. But highways officer Tim Lawrence is yet to be convinced that building a road is the best plan, saying that the council needed to conduct a traffic survey first. Miller Homes already has permission to go ahead with 120 houses off Ravensthorpe Road at the edge of the 160-hectare site. While Mr Lawrence stated that improvements would be needed in the long term, it was still to be decided whether that would mean a new road or simply upgrades to the existing A644. He said: “Work we have done shows a road would be beneficial to

the public as congestion relief. But £20m is a lot to spend just providing a link road to a site. “We’re protecting the public purse to make sure there’s value for money and it’s not just benefiting the developer.” The Dewsbury Riverside project is part of Kirklees Council’s Local Plan, which is currently being discussed at a public inquiry headed by a government inspector. Officials and campaigners attended sessions at Batley Town Hall this week to debate the 15-year development masterplan, which outlines proposals to build 33,000 new homes across the district, with many of the earmarked sites being either green belt or agricultural land. The council’s road plans have

The controversial development would take up 160 hectares of green fields between Dewsbury and Mirfield – and traffic congestion is a major issue
