ALMOST 120,000 events are set to take place nationwide this weekend marking a year since the death of Batley & Spen MP Jo Cox. Dozens of events are planned across North Kirklees as part of The Great Get Together, which was set up by Mrs Cox’s family to encourage people of all ages and faiths to celebrate togetherness. More than a million people are expected to take part across the UK. Mrs Cox’s famous maiden speech in the House of Commons included the words: “We are far more united and have far more in common than that which divides us.” This weekend, communities everywhere will be echoing Mrs Cox’s words and coming together to celebrate her legacy. Today (Fri) marks exactly a year since her murder in Birstall. Mrs Cox’s husband Brendan said: “In the last few weeks we have been awed by the scale of the reaction to the idea of the Great Get Together taking place this weekend. “We are already aware of almost 120,000 events across the country from street parties to barbecues and picnics – and I know that is probably just the tip of the iceberg.” Locally there are a host of events and activities organised in her honour. Mrs Cox’s sister Kim Leadbeater will be present at get-togethers across the district today (Fri), firstly at Heckmondwike’s Green Park where the Spenborough Co-operative Trust are hosting a ‘Big Sing’ with pupils from Heckmondwike Grammar School and Spen Valley High. She will then move on to Upper Batley Boys High School, where they are renaming their meeting room The Jo Cox Conference Centre at 11.30am. And in the afternoon it will be an emotional trip to Birstall, where Mrs Cox died. Ms Leadbeater said the Great Get Together would be a “fitting tribute” to a woman whose main purpose was to unite people. She said: “It is more important than ever that
