ALMOST 120,000 events are set to take place nationwide this weekend marking a year since the death of Batley & Spen MP Jo Cox. Dozens of events are planned across North Kirklees as part of The Great Get Together, which was set up by Mrs Cox’s family to encourage people of all ages and faiths to celebrate togetherness.

More than a million people are expected to take part across the UK. Mrs Cox’s famous maiden speech in the House of Commons included the words: “We are far more united and have far more in common than that which divides us.”

This weekend, communities everywhere will be echoing Mrs Cox’s words and coming together to celebrate her legacy.

Today (Fri) marks exactly a year since her murder in Birstall.

Mrs Cox’s husband Brendan said: “In the last few weeks we have been awed by the scale of the reaction to the idea of the Great Get Together taking place this weekend.

“We are already aware of almost 120,000 events across the country from street parties to barbecues and picnics – and I know that is probably just the tip of the iceberg.”

Locally there are a host of events and activities organised in her honour.

Mrs Cox’s sister Kim Leadbeater will be present at get-togethers across the district today (Fri), firstly at Heckmondwike’s Green Park where the Spenborough Co-operative Trust are hosting a ‘Big Sing’ with pupils from Heckmondwike Grammar School and Spen Valley High.

She will then move on to Upper Batley Boys High School, where they are renaming their meeting room The Jo Cox Conference Centre at 11.30am.

And in the afternoon it will be an emotional trip to Birstall, where Mrs Cox died.

Ms Leadbeater said the Great Get Together would be a “fitting tribute” to a woman whose main purpose was to unite people.

By Steve Martyn NEWLY-RE-ELECTED Labour MP Paula Sherriff has hit out at the Prime Minister in a scathing letter sent to Downing Street this week.

Ms Sherriff has been a staunch campaigner against proposed NHS cuts that could see a downgrade in services at Dewsbury and District Hospital.

She wrote to Theresa May followPM Theresa May in Thornhill ing the Prime Pic: Mike Clark Minister’s recent election campaign visit to Thornhill Cricket Club, where she dismissed fears over the loss and downgrading of local A&E services as “scaremongering”.

Ms Sherriff wrote: “On your recent visit to Dewsbury, you were asked about local hospital services and if it was ‘right that Kirklees, one of the largest councils in the country, could end up with no full A&E?’ “When you were asked further about the specific threat to local hospital services, you rejected this as ‘scaremongering’.

“To put it plainly, your comments have caused consternation amongst residents in my constituency and across Kirklees.

“I and many local people have been shocked by your dismissal of the serious situation faced by NHS services here in Kirklees.”

The Dewsbury MP said that she had invited both Mrs May and Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt to visit Dewsbury so that they can speak to local staff and patients to see the strain NHS services in the area are facing.

Man arrested after frenzied pickaxe attack A MAN arrested after a pickaxe was smashed into the bonnet of a Range Rover in Mirfield has been released on bail.

Armed police were called to reports of a man with a weapon on a building site at Calder Road, Lower Hopton, on Wednesday morning.

According to witnesses, a man had been seen shouting and swearing and allegedly threatening his boss with a hammer.

A property developer

and members of his team were forced to climb into the Range Rover for safety.

The developer, who is converting a derelict building on Calder Road into

apartments and did not want to be named, said: “He’s gone in a van and got a hammer out and then he’s come for me.

“My son tried to talk him down, and he ended up hitting him in the face, so he’s gone to the floor and so has the hammer.

“I shouted to my two sons and another woman who works for me: ‘Get in the car’.

“He’s then gone in a van and rummaged and pulled a pickaxe out.

“I was going to pull away but if I’d carried on driving forwards, he would have hit the windscreen so I started to reverse and he hit the bonnet.

“I was scared, the pickaxe could do a lot of damage. I drove out of the yard and the pickaxe was still embedded in the bonnet.

“He just acted as if nothing had happened. His car was in front of the Range Rover but he didn’t get in it.”

Yorkshire Police said: “Police were called to a report of a man in possession of a weapon at around 9.50am at premises on Calder Road, Mirfield.

“Officers attended and found a male to be in possession of a pickaxe. A vehicle parked at the premises has been damaged in the incident.”

Det Insp John Charlton, of Kirklees CID, said the man had been released on bail pending further enquiries.

Easter Bell repair DEWSBURY: The Minster is preparing to send its 150-year-old Easter Bell to be repaired next week.

The bell could not be chimed at Easter this year because it has cracks in it. Church officials are sending it to a specialist welding company on Thursday.

It will be removed from the bell frame, lowered down the tower and loaded into a van – and it will be available for viewing on the ground until around lunchtime.

Funday for victims DEWSBURY: A fundraising event in aid of Syrian war victims is to be held next month.

The Eid Funday at Savile Park on Sunday, July 2, will have stalls, games, activities, an obstacle course, bouncy castle, barbecue, and lots more. Explosions as vehicle tyres burst in heat

By Zoe Shackleton A BLAZE which engulfed two HGV trailers is being treated as suspected arson.

Soothill Lane was shrouded in thick, dark smoke on Tuesday night after residents reportedly heard blasts from the Dura Beds factory at around 8pm.

The noise of explosions were said to come from the vehicles’ tyres bursting as the blaze took hold in the trailers.

Nobody was injured but investigations are under way

to determine how the blaze started.

Crews from Dewsbury, Cleckheaton and Morley attended the scene. A crew member from Dewsbury Fire Station said: “There are suspicious circumstances over the fire. It is suspected arson.

“A trailer for a wagon was involved in the fire and the explosions heard were the popping of big tyres in the heat.

When the heat gets to a certain point they blow. It looked impressive.”

Cleckheaton Watch Commander Gary Hatton, who

was at the incident, said: “Two HGV-type trailers with ‘curtains’ for loading and unloading were on fire when we arrived.

“En route we were told there had been explosions; there was a massive one, with one of the tyres exploding and flying 10 metres.

“Once we got a good water source and some jets on it, we had dabbed it down within 30 minutes.

“Fortunately the trailers were parked away from the buildings, otherwise it could have been a different story.”

News In Brief School rated ‘good’ in Ofsted report BATLEY: Windmill C of E Primary School has been praised by Ofsted and rated ‘good’ in a report published this week.

The school on Upper Batley Lane was rated ‘good’ overall, and ‘outstanding’ in personal development, behaviour and welfare.

The report said: “All pupils spoken to say they are safe in school and they enjoy school.

Pupils are very pleasant, polite and respectful to each other and to adults. Attendance is excellent.

“The headteacher and governors have high expectations. Staff are clear about how ambitious leaders are and support them well. As a result, the overall effectiveness of the school is good.”

Ofsted have also given pointers for the school to raise the bar to ‘outstanding’ by advising that classwork could be adjusted when necessary to offer greater challenge.

Knuckleduster threat HECKMONDWIKE: A drink driver received a suspended prison sentence from Kirklees magistrates after threatening a man with a knuckleduster.

Charles Haigh, 49, of Crow Nest View, Dewsbury, was seen stumbling to his van in the McDonalds car park in Heckmondwike on July 17 last year when the man tried to stop him.

But Haigh got behind the wheel, crashed into a parked Peugeot car and drove off.

Police found the damaged van and traced him to the Crackenedge Hotel, where he was drinking.

Robert Galley, prosecuting, said Haigh was more than three times over the drink-drive limit.

He was sentenced to 12 months in prison, suspended for 18 months, and ordered to do 15 rehabilitation activity days and observe a two-month curfew from 8.30pm to 6.30am.

He was also been banned from driving for three years.

How did Jo’s killer get his gun? I won’t rest until I learn the truth, says top cop THE DETECTIVE who led the investigation into the murder of Batley & Spen MP Jo Cox has vowed not to rest until he discovers how her killer managed to acquire the gun used to shoot her.

Detective Superintendent Nick Wallen revealed that the .22 rimfire rifle had been stolen in Keighley in 2015. But he is still at a loss as to how the socially-isolated killer Thomas Mair ended up with the weapon.

Exactly a year ago today (June 16), Mrs Cox travelled to Birstall Library, where she was repeatedly

shot and stabbed by Mair, who lived alone in nearby Lowood Lane.

In the BBC Two documentary, Jo Cox: Death of an MP, that was aired on Tuesday night, Det Supt Wallen said: “Acquiring a firearm for a criminal purpose is not easy, unless you are a criminal yourself and you know how to get one.

“As an adult male in the 21st century, he is, like all of us, an owner of a mobile telephone; but in three years he has sent three texts and there is no call data.

“He is not somebody who is immersed in crimi-

nality, making calls, wheeling and dealing, trying to get himself a firearm.

“That begs the question: ‘How did you, Thomas Mair, get that gun?’

“It is an active line of inquiry and I will not rest until I find out how he got that gun.”

The documentary showed video footage from police interviews where Mair is seen refusing to answer any questions.

But detectives were able to establish that the rifle, typically used for pest control, had been stolen from the registered holder’s vehicle in August, 2015.

Said Det Supt Wallen: “It has passed, I would presume, through a number of hands before it has got to Thomas Mair, through the criminal fraternity.

“I’ve taken that firearm to bits but we’ve found no DNA, fingerprints or traces of anybody else.”

Mair, now 53, is serving a whole life sentence for murder, possession of a firearm with intent to commit murder, possession of an offensive weapon – a dagger – and causing grievous bodily harm with intent.

News In Brief Burglar jailed BATLEY: A burglar has been jailed for four years at Leeds Crown Court.

Peter John Settle, of no fixed address, was captured on CCTV trying the door handles of a house on Grange Road, Batley, on the night of November 11. He then searched a car and the occupant later found a pushchair had been stolen from the boot.

Settle committed another burglary two days later before he was arrested. He went to a bungalow on Ennerdale Road, Dewsbury, and stole a laptop, iPad, speakers, a purse and other items along with a Vauxhall Astra that he used to drive away the stolen goods.

The vehicle was later found abandoned and by 7.23am Settle had used one of the bank cards in a Tesco Express.

By Zoe Shackleton AFTER seven weeks of campaigning to retain her Dewsbury seat, Labour MP Paula Sherriff talked candidly to The Press following her General Election victory.

Ms Sherriff secured an increased majority of more than 3,000 over Conservative candidate Beth Prescott – and said she owed her success to her “phenomenal” team.

The former NHS worker doubled her majority from 2015, when she beat Tory incumbent Simon Reevell by 1,451 votes. She said: “I think part of what works for me as an MP is that I keep it real. I’m not a career politician, I’ve never been to university so I’m quite different to some, and my staff are very much the same.

“They’ve all had their own experiences, a single mum or people who have had challenges, and they really do get it when people ring up and talk about things like disability allowances being cut and that empathy is so important.

“I’m proud of them, this has been a hard few weeks for them. They’ve not known if they’re going to be out of a job. I have the best team, they are phenomenal.”

She discussed her immediate plans and how she aims to carry on what she has started.

Said Ms Sherriff: “I’ve got some great new campaigns coming up. I want to do some work on anti-social behaviour locally, I want to do some more on the empowerment of women.

“I’ve got some specific areas within the portfolio (of Shadow Women’s Minister) that I want to do, and I want to challenge the narrative. I want to look at issues that people might have previously considered to be quite sensitive.

“I want to talk about things that real people experience, so I’m really excited. I’m absolutely thrilled and ready to get started again.”

■ TRACY BRABIN could not contain her joy after being re-elected as MP for Batley & Spen.

Ms Brabin was elected last year in the byelection after MP Jo Cox’s death and this year secured just under a 9,000 majority over Conservative candidate Ann Myatt – the biggest majority for Batley since 1966 – with 55.5 per cent of the vote.

The 56-year-old former actress spoke to The Press following her re-election and expressed her desire to bring something different to Batley & Spen.

Said Ms Brabin: “I was on a commission to investigate access for working-class kids to get into film, TV and theatre. We’d only just started that, so I’d love to continue. I do feel I have something unique to offer because there’s nobody in Westminster with my background, so I want to build on that as well as going forward with the campaigns locally.”

She added: “Part of the joy of the job has been to have an impact for individuals in the community that have come into my surgery, and I really have been the bridge between them and Westminster to make quite big changes for them and their families.

“I really have enjoyed that and I want to continue that work.

“I’ve had six months to prove myself to some degree and it does seem that people responded to the work I’ve done.

“They’ve seen what I’ve been getting up to – fighting against the downgrade of Dewsbury Hospital and school cuts.

“But the manifesto was incredibly positive, people responded to that. It’s a manifesto full of hope and there are exciting times ahead.”

Turnout for the Batley and Spen constituency was 67.3% – 53,947 votes cast overall out of 80,153 eligible.

The Lib Dems’ John Lawson came third, polling just over 1,200 votes, while independent Brexit candidate Aleks Lukic was fourth with 1,076.

BIRSTALL: BBC’s Look North and ITV’s Calendar will join forces today (Friday) to honour MP Jo Cox. Look North’s Harry Gration and Calendar’s Christine Talbot will broadcast together from the Market Place in Birstall (6pm).

It is the first time the news programmes have been brought together in 49 years and is part of the Great Get Together series of events to mark a year since Mrs Cox’s death.

Pub gang attack DEWSBURY: Two friends were attacked by seven men outside a pub on Wednesday night. One was attacked with a broken bottle and had his head stamped on in the car park of the Babes in the Wood on Leeds Road.

She’s called the wife.

You might be familiar with this sentiment – I make all the big decisions like who should run the country and whether there’s a God, she takes care of the minor detail like where we live, go on holiday, what we drive, what we eat/do/watch on telly, etc etc.

It works well enough. In the house at least.

During the election campaign there was a famously cringing moment when Theresa May and her meek husband Philip appeared on BBC’s The One Show sofa, trying ever so hard to appear normal. Theresa said she does the girly jobs, hubby the boy jobs around the house.

Did you buy that? For a solitary second? Me neither.

If there was an moment of light relief last Friday morning it was seeing the emasculation of wee Nicola Krankie in Scotland and the ousting of Alex Salmond and Angus Robertson. At least that’s the independence argument settled for a while.

But no sooner had the toast been raised to the SNP being holed below the waterline than another monster arose, this time the overblown Scottish Tory leader Ruth Davidson.

Now she’s shouting the odds, telling Westminster (where she has no seat) how ‘her’ MPs will be dictating policy.

What’s that saying – power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely?

There’s nothing much soft around the edges with that lot.

Indeed, I can’t think of a British male politician of recent years (or in Merkel’s case a European one) who has been so selfishly grasping of power as May,

Sturgeon and now newcomer Davidson. Far too much ‘I’ and too little ‘we’ for my liking.

Formidable people, immensely convinced of their own superiority, knickers or y-fronts notwithstanding.

O WHAT next for the United Kingdom? Where do we go from here? You tell me.

Mother Theresa may well be doing her best impression of Russia’s President Putin in pretending last week was a resounding mandate, that the nation overwhelmingly told her to get on with the job.

No, Prime Minister – those were millions of vee-signs being flipped at you. As promised, there was even one from me in the ballot box.

And she will, sooner (hopefully) or later. There isn’t a snowflake’s chance in hell that the Conservative Party’s men in grey suits could let this disastrous egomaniac lead them into another gener-

ONGRATULATIONS to the two local MPs Paula Sherriff and Tracy Brabin whose wholehearted efforts since being elected in their respective constituencies were rewarded.

It’s clear that the two seats reflect the changed national landscape, de facto two-party battlegrounds. It seems an age since Dewsbury had the highest BNP vote in the country and pleasing to note that they have disappeared pretty much without trace.

Both women appear to have harnessed the ethnic vote solidly behind Labour.

Hey, that’s politics, however much I might be reviled by the sight of Ms Brabin out canvassing wearing a hijab.

I get it, when being asked to dress appropriately to go into a place of worship like a mosque – it’s a mark of respect. But out and about campaigning on the streets of Mount Pleasant? Sorry, not for me.

Short of an overall Labour majority, the hung parliament

It’s wonderful, in one sense. In another, that the prospect of Prime Minister Corbyn now seems stunningly possible, it is frightening beyond words.

is the best possible news for the pair, because it will make Tory plans to implement Boundary Commission changes next year very difficult indeed.

As they stood, both seats would have been redrawn to an extent that would have rendered them unrecognisable.

For now I wish both Miss Sherriff and Ms Brabin well in continuing their fight to protect hospital services and generally improve the profile of the district.

Neither the time nor the place for this T SADDENS me that there’s no tragedy so awful that it can’t be seized upon for political opportunism.

During the terrible attacks on people at London Bridge and Borough Market two weeks ago, police officers both on and off duty displayed remarkable courage in tackling the madmen responsible.

As the grim human cost of the Grenfell Tower block blaze continues to unfold, the insuperable courage of firefighters who battled to exhaustion and beyond, should make

us all proud of their service.

There is plenty of that, thankfully.

Unfortunately, it takes only minutes for some people to turn it into a story not of human endeavour and bravery, but a politicised protest about cuts in the police and fire services.

That wouldn’t have made any difference to those tragic victims and to suggest it would demeans the efforts and sacrifices of the men and women who tried so valiantly to save people. There’s a time and a place and I’d suggest this isn’t it.

‘Inadequate’ care home still in special measures

By Staff Reporters A CARE home in Ravensthorpe has been rated inadequate for the second time running following an inspection by the Care Quality Commission.

Blossom Care Home, on Church Street, was inspected in November last year when it was inadequate in areas such as safe care and treatment, staffing and person-centred care.

Inspectors returned on March 13 and 16 unannounced, and the home, which provides accommodation for up to 20 people, was found to be in continued breach of the same regulations.

It was ruled inadequate for safety, effectiveness and lead-

ership, and ‘requires improvement’ for care and responsiveness.

The CQC found issues with safe care in the home, with care plans insufficient to ensure needs could be safely met.

Some risks to people had not been assessed properly and concerns about the safety of the premises were highlighted because work needed to meet the requirements of an enforcement notice issued by the West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Authority had not been completed.

People were at risk because some windows on the first floor were open well beyond the recommended limit.

Among other findings, inspectors said there was a

lack of staff support, supervision and training, with some employees saying they had not received regular supervision or training in key areas.

Inspectors also identified in the previous inspection that staff did not always treat people with dignity or respect and that people’s human rights were not always upheld.

There had been no improvements.

The report said: “The overall rating for this service is ‘inadequate’ and the service remains in ‘special measures’.

“Services in special measures are kept under review and further enforcement action may be taken as appropriate.”

The home did not respond to our request for comment.

Police appeal in hunt for fugitive POLICE have renewed their appeal for help in tracing a Dewsbury sex offender who should be behind bars.

Asif Ghafoor Butt, 35, pictured, was sentenced to 11 years in prison in his absence during a hearing on May 25, when he was found guilty of sexual offences committed against a 13-year-old in the Wakefield district.

Butt failed to appear at Leeds Crown Court in October after being charged with the offences, which took place in 2015.

He became aware of his victim through a relative of hers, and then made contact with her on social media.

His offending came to light when the relative of the victim found out about the incidents.

Since his failure to turn up to

court, police have been unable to find Butt despite extensive enquiries. He is Asian, 5ft 5ins tall and of average build.

Detective Inspector Steve Greenbank said: “Extensive enquiries are ongoing to trace Asif Butt, who will face an 11year prison sentence when he is caught. He will also be dealt with for breaching the terms of his bail and failing to attend court. We appeal to anyone who knows of his whereabouts to contact police on 101, referencing police log number 287 of 28.03.17.”

A classic from much-loved George Dear Sir, It was with great sadness that my husband and I read of the death of George Carrigill.

Many people may not know but George was a very formidable table tennis player in his younger days, and very well known in the Dewsbury and Yorkshire Table Tennis Leagues and he entered many table tennis tournaments.

When I was chosen to play table tennis for Yorkshire’s second team it was a great privilege and George was not only in the team but was the team captain.

He was a great help in my early years and as my first coach (and he wouldn’t take any fee from my father) started me off in my chosen sport.

I remember a time when three players from Huddersfield, George and I went to Wakefield Jail to give an exhibition

In what is likely to be our last general election before constituency boundaries are redrawn, Labour should be congratulated on their best result locally in 50 years.

If one outcome of this election is a stronger opposition, then that will be good for our democracy. The increased youth turnout is also a positive.

Theresa May is still in charge with an increased national vote share and a majority of MPs elected in Great Britain.

It is perfectly reasonable for the Conservatives to govern with the support of the DUP, who have a majority of MPs elected in Northern Ireland.

After a hard-fought campaign, I will be taking some time to relax and consider what I might do next.

One thing you can be assured of is that I won’t allow Tracy Brabin to get away with any backsliding over Brexit!

Headed for a crash From: ‘JS’, Batley Dear Sir, As an economics teacher in the 60s and early 70s I have followed trends up to present times.

In my opinion, all signposts are pointing to a big recession within the next two years.

Why? • Total economic uncertainty • Wars and conflict throughout the world • Changes in alliances and trading partners.

Examples: Russia with India and China, the new ‘Silk Road’, Russia with Iran, China with African countries, UK to forge stronger trade with USA, China, the Commonwealth and others • Russia and China buying up gold • Oil prices planned to rise to decrease global warming • UK – inflation, wage freezes, house price stagnation, Brexit (which I agree with), causing temporary disruption mainly caused by the domineering, obstinate European Union • USA – trillions on national debt, mainly to China • Cyber crime • ‘When America sneezes, we catch a cold’.

It happened last time, and it will happen again. Morever, automation and robots could put millions more on the dole queues within 10 years.

For example, there used to be three cashiers taking council tax in the town halls, now there is a machine.

All this will be accentuated by the rapid increase of the unskilled labour force finding their way into the country.

Think of the massive burden which will be inflicted on taxpayers!

Remember, commerce, financial institutions, governments, businesses and the people despise the disagreements and uncertainty which are overshadowing the world in present times. Elections are secondary to the main issues.

I was tempted to vote for a Marxist government on Thursday. But no, I went ‘independent’ instead. If it was the student vote that nearly put JC into No.10, I have this to say.

However, Blair is more thickskinned than May, who hid away while others ruined their chance of being Prime Minister.

I’ve seen dozens of people letting success go to their heads, including myself in younger days.

‘Experience is the best teacher, but the school fees are high’.

The British people were asked to vote in order to give our Prime Minister and her team a strong mandate to go into the EU Brexit negotiations with a strong hand.

Abolishing university tuition fees was a winner with over 1.84 million

students to appeal to, not forgetting it was a Labour Government that introduced those fees back in 1998.

He also proposed many other sweeteners to ram home his highlyexpensive proposals.

Compare that to the Conservatives’ plan to remove the pensioners’ triple lock and to means-test the winter fuel allowance, without advising a cap threshold, withdrawing free school lunches for kiddies in England and, just for good measure, introduce what’s become known as a ‘dementia tax’.

She didn’t even consider the enormous student vote opportunity.

Under these conditions Theresa May was extremely fortunate to have won the election.

To fall from favour so spectacularly and within a three-week time frame was down to an appalling manifesto and arrogance beyond belief.

Seeking advice from some of her highly-educated colleagues prior to the manifesto’s release was clearly beyond her.

Anyone with any contact with the general public could have given her three realistic policies.

1) Reduce the foreign aid budget by 50 per cent and inject the £7billion saved into the NHS and care services.

2) Immediately deport all foreign nationals, without appeal, that are on the terrorist watch list. Killing our children was the last straw for these indiscriminate barbarians who enjoy our hospitality.

3) Remove university tuition fees for core subjects necessary for our future prosperity – maths, science, engineering and medicine.

Her advisors were way off the mark. The British people have suffered austerity measures for nearly nine years.

Enough is enough and, whilst I found Jeremy’s plan a ‘Fantasy Island’ it did give people hope.

Unfortunately, we now have to accept the consequences of our actions, which will lead to massive instability and uncertainty which could and should have been avoided.

News In Brief Car and jewellery stolen in burglary MIRFIELD: A distinctive Mini car and various items of jewellery were stolen in a burglary at a home in Hopton Lane, Lower Hopton, between June 3-9.

Stolen jewellery included a pale pink Mulberry handbag, a gold ring in the shape of a flower, a half eternity ring with emeralds and diamonds, a ring with a pale pink stone and a half eternity ring with dark rubies.

The Mini is blue with a black roof and two stripes down the front, with a personalised number plate starting with ‘H’.

Police want to hear from anyone who has been invited to buy the jewellery or the car.

Anyone with any information is urged to call Kirklees CID on 101, quoting crime reference 13170261329.

Attacker banned from contacting ‘ex’ DEWSBURY: A 25-year-old man has been banned from contacting his ex-girlfriend after attacking her because she hacked his Facebook profile.

Tommy Drury, of Textile Street, grabbed the woman by the throat and punched her as she lay on the floor when he found out she had used his account to message other women and then changed his password.

Kirklees magistrates made a restraining order banning him from contacting his victim and ordered him to carry out 200 hours of unpaid work. He must also pay £270 in costs and compensation.

Lucky escape MIRFIELD: A pensioner had a lucky escape when he was hit by a car on Knowl Road at around 7pm last Thursday. The driver phoned an ambulance and paramedics treated the man for slight injuries.

Tribute to a legend OBITUARY: GEORGE CARRIGILL

OU risk running out of tributes eventually, as our old soldiers take their final salute. ‘One of the best’, ‘end of an era’, ‘they don’t make ’em like that any more...’ Not that I think George Carrigill ever did National Service in its strictest sense. If he had, he would have won the sergeant’s stripes and probably the colonel’s car too in a smart wager with someone thinking they were smarter than the twinkly, blue-eyed Dewsbury lad.

But my, did George serve, in so many ways.

This isn’t an ordinary obituary because George Carrigill wasn’t an ordinary bloke. In his passing last Thursday in Dewsbury Hospital, I felt a deeper than usual sense of loss for our Heavy Woollen district.

The Dewsbury that George grew up didn’t live under the yoke of Huddersfield, now increasingly suffocated by the weight of Leeds, Wakefield, Bradford and closer to home the surging influences of, well, places even farther afield.

His generation bore witness to cataclysmic changes. They take with them stories of a very different world from today’s.

I got to know George on a personal level as a young-ish member of Dewsbury Rotary Club in the mid-1990s. He was a local legend of long standing, from way before my inaugural days on the Dewsbury Reporter, when he was ‘Mr’ Carrigill, Turf Accountant.

I could fill this paper – between us we could fill a book – with stories of George’s fun-filled escapades. Always mischief and a laugh, never anything more malign. To summon another well-trodden adage, George has nothing to come back for.

I’m grateful to his son Bill, who continues running the Carrigill chain of six bookmakers’ offices across the district, for assistance in retelling his dad’s early years.

Born and raised in Dewsbury, where his dad William (Bill) and mum Elizabeth (Betty) ran the Turk’s Head pub, at the foot of the current ring road flyover, George went to Wheelwright Boys’ Grammar School and became a young journalist on the old Dewsbury & District News. George Carrigill, a storyteller – you don’t say!

The game however was already afoot...

He met his dear, devoted wife Edith when they were teenagers at a Dewsbury dance hall, although the good woman and mother of his three children, Bill, Paul and Fiona, resisted the scoundrel’s marital ministrations until 1954.

As Bill tells it, that was his dad’s ‘road to Damascus’ moment. An inveterate follower of the dogs and ponies, “dad loved a bet. Mum would say it was ‘feast or famine’, depending how he’d done.”

The story is legend of how, at school, George doubled up bets that a teacher was a) a nudist, and b) he dare ask him. Once he posed the question it was a no-lose proposition!

Marrying Edith, however, coincided with young George coming of age and into his late dad’s £300 inheritance. For the most part (except for when he was a keen greyhound trainer, mostly in the 1970s when he had a Scottish Grand National winner among others), the wily businessman decided to let everyone else make the bets, while he made the money.

N the early days of The Press, of which George was a great supporter, I remember him popping in for a cuppa, which he did often, and rejoicing (really!) in one of his punters landing a massive bet.

I forget the amount but it would have put some people out of business. George wanted us to tell the tale – he wanted a photo taking.

We obliged of course. Not daft, that George Carrigill...

His son Bill resumes: “There are lots of blokes who will tell how they landed a big bet at Carrigill’s and not only did George happily pay out, but he would send them a bottle of champagne as well!”

Do you think word of those gestures got around punters in Ravensthorpe, Earlsheaton and Heckmondwike, as well as the two Dewsbury town centre shops and Mirfield, which the family firm still runs?

There were nine shops at their peak but the business still thrives. While one son, Paul, became a European Tour golf professional and then a senior referee in world golf, Bill eventually took the helm at the ‘bookies’, where his own son Robert is now the metaphorical jockey’s apprentice.

George’s industry acumen was well recognised, serving on national bookmaking bodies until very recently when he would be wheel-

chaired along the platform at Wakefield Station in order to make appointments in the capital.

Again, in Bill’s words: “He always said, ‘my job is my hobby and my hobby is my job’.”

Bliss.

It’s ironic that the office where George Carrigill began and finished his adventure is still in the same building, 12 Corporation Street in Dewsbury town centre, for so long sharing a back/side entrance with the old Woolworth’s store. I doubt, however, that Woolies ever got the attention from ‘the law’ that George did.

When he started his original office, upstairs from today’s shop, bookmaking was – shock, horror! – illegal in the sense we now know.

Cash bets were forbidden.

George has often told how in his early days he would get his own mum to ring the office, her strict instruction being to put down the phone when he answered. This is what the bootlegging betters heard: “Hello, Carrigill’s, what’s that, £100 on Black Bob in the 3.40! The bet’s on!” and so on and so forth several times a day, poor old mum not knowing what nefarious mischief she was assisting.

As the fledgling business took wing, George was ‘worded’ by the local constabulary, well wise to his affairs but tolerant of it.

“George,” said the inspector, “they’re not too happy over in Leeds about the raids they’re having and we’re not. I need to do something about it, so next Tuesday you’ll be getting a visit.” When the day dawned, the owner of Clark’s Butchers opposite rang the fire brigade at seeing men leaping from windows, billows of smoke (in those nicotine-heavy days) following them.

Other customers accepted Plod’s remonstrations to walk round to the old police station by the town hall (unaccompanied, mind) with dignity, where they accepted their five-shilling fine and promised to be bound over to keep the peace.

Miscreant George’s punishment was a fulsome five pounds. But he paid his punters’ fines too.

He never lost his wonderfully defiant attitude towards authority, especially the petty Kirklees Council parking wardens with whom he had a constant running battle that he never lost the appetite for.

Away from the family home and his daily devotion to the business, George Carrigill, patriot that he was, was also an unabashed Francophile. For many years he took coach parties for visits to his beloved Paris, culminating in a day at the Arc de Triomphe race meeting. France was a regular home for extended family holidays.

Bill also remembers long summers in Dublin, where George loved to indulge his love of the greyhounds, the memories surely lingering of the evenings at Yorkshire ‘flapping tracks’ where he and the lads from his shop would make merry with the local wags.

In one of our mid-morning natters when George stopped by The Press, I mentioned that I was visiting Ireland and part of the itinerary involved a night at the greyhounds. George gave me a name of someone he knew there and said to mention him.

“George Carrigill? You’re a friend of George Carrigill by God?” We were treated like kings. In this valley’s terms, it was because we knew one.

George leaves his wife Edith, three children and seven grandchildren. His funeral will take place at St Mary’s Church, Leeds Road, Woodkirk, next Thursday (June 22) at 1pm.

News In Brief Stolen phone foils thief’s reward claim DEWSBURY: A thief who stole keys from a car and then tried to return them to the owner to claim a reward was jailed for 16 weeks – after a mobile phone betrayed his deception.

Luke Goler, 29, who was living at Dearnley Street, Ravensthorpe, had stolen the phone, a sat nav and a fuel card, along with the bunch of keys from a Skoda Octavia, on June 5 in Milnsbridge, Huddersfield.

He was caught when he went to meet the owner in the hope of receiving a £25 reward for finding the keys. But he had the stolen mobile phone in his pocket and it started to ring. Police identified it as the stolen phone.

Goler pleaded guilty to offences of theft and attempted theft from a vehicle. Kirklees magistrates were told he had 45 previous convictions and had also tested positive for the misuse of cocaine. It was also highlighted that he had suffered mental health issues following an injury to his skull as a child.

Police spat on DEWSBURY: A woman spat in the faces of two female police officers as they tried to arrest her, Kirklees magistrates were told.

Olivia Nolan, 23, admitted assault after the officers went to her home on Heckmondwike Road following reports of a domestic disturbance.

After being arrested on suspicion of a public order offence, she also spat in the face of an officer in the back of a police van.

Magistrates ordered a probation report prior to sentencing.

Car crash rescue

By Staff Reporters THE school made famous by Channel Four’s Educating Yorkshire programme has been told it requires improvement following an Ofsted inspection.

Thornhill Community Academy was visited by inspectors last month and their report shows it needs to improve in a number of areas.

One of the main concerns raised was that pupils who have special educational needs and/or disabilities are not benefiting the way they should be.

Election candidates, above and below, canvass pupils before the vote

Pupils turn out to the polls in mock election campaign A LIVERSEDGE school held a mock election as part of a nationwide school politics scheme.

Year five pupils at Norristhorpe Junior and Infant School were able to form their own political parties, develop their manifestos and canvas other children to seek votes.

Year six children organised the election - manning the polling station, counting the votes and declaring the results.

After learning about the democratic process in assemblies, pupils had their say in the polling

booths, with a turnout of over 80 per cent. The winning candidate was Thomas, whose campaign aimed to ‘Lead Britain into a new age of freedom, law and truth’.

Mr Luby, the lead teacher for the mock election, said: “I was really pleased with the way the children participated.

“The parties worked really hard to learn about what the government does and write their manifestos.

“I hope they will continue to understand how democracy affects them as they grow up to be young voters.”

GP and magistrate join health team NORTH KIRKLEES Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) has appointed two new governing body members.

They are Dr Mangipudi Jayashree of the Windsor Medical Centre in Dewsbury and, on a six-month interim basis as a lay member, local magistrate David Longstaff.

Dr Jayashree joins the governing body as a GP member.

She will provide clinical leadership to the CCG on respiratory care and children’s and maternal health.

Mr Longstaff will have

responsibility for auditing. Dr Andrew Cameron of Greenway Medical Practice in Cleckheaton, has also been reappointed as a GP member. He will provide clinical leadership on mental health and information technology.

Leaving the CCG’s governing body are lay member Colin Meredith and Dr Adnan Jabbar.

CCG chairman Dr David Kelly said: “We look forward to working with our new governing body members as we continue our work to shape

local healthcare services to meet local needs and make sure the people of North Kirklees are able to live longer, healthier, happier lives.

“I would like to thank Colin and Adnan for their valuable contribution to the work of our governing body and wish them all the best for the future.

The CCG is made up of 28 GP practices across the district and is led by local doctors and health professionals who work together to design, plan and buy local health services.

News In Brief ‘Knife man made threats to dog-walker’ THORNHILL: A Cleckheaton man accused of wielding a knife to threaten a dog-walker on Partridge Crescent on May 9 has appeared in court.

Kirklees magistrates heard that Dominic Strother, 28, of Turnsteads Drive, argued with Ashley Haigh, who was exercising his dogs, and produced a knife.

Strother denied two charges of using threatening words or behaviour to cause harassment, alarm or distress and possession of a knife. His trial will take place at Kirklees Magistrates’ Court on August 31.

Man breached curfew DEWSBURY: A man has been arrested for breaching his curfew after failing to return home in time.

Mark Smith was ordered to remain indoors at his home in William Street but had not returned by 7.27pm last Saturday.

Kirklees magistrates heard that he had contacted staff from Electronic Monitoring Services to explain that his vehicle had broken down and he would be late home.

Smith denies additional charges of assaulting his ex-partner and damaging her car window on the same date.

He has been remanded in custody until his trial on July 12.

Appeal for relatives HECKMONDWIKE: Coroners are appealing for any relatives of a Bradford man who lived in a Heckmondwike care home to get in touch.

Philip Smith, 59, died in hospital on May 30.

Mr Smith was born in Bradford but lived in a care home in the area for a number of years before his death, which is not being treated as suspicious.

Any friends or relatives of Mr Smith are asked to get in touch with coroner Stephen Hepplestone, on 01274 471438.

Mika’s dream has Scottish accent A BIRSTALL teenager has secured a place at one of the most prestigious dance schools in Europe.

Mika George Evans, 16, will be moving to Glasgow this summer to start a degree course at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland.

She will study at the world-famous institution for a BA in modern ballet, to move a step closer to fulfilling her dream of becoming a professional

ballet dancer. Mika, a student at Bradford College, started dancing when she was two years old in her native New Zealand.

She spent two years with the New Zealand School of Dance Scholars programme before her family moved to the UK when she was 12.

Mika continued her training at Northern Ballet’s centre for advanced training in Leeds, where she has

been for the past four years. She is also studying for a Level 2 performing arts diploma at Bradford College.

Mika is unfazed at the prospect of moving home and said: “In ballet you have to start your training early as your career is coming to an end in your 30s.

“I am excited by the opportunity. I had offers closer to home but thought Scotland was a more exciting move.”

Where there’s smoke there’s ire... anger over £75 fine for cig litter

By Zoe Shackleton ANOTHER resident has cried foul after being handed a fine by Kirklees Council’s new privatelyrun litter patrol.

Kevin Blackburn, of Smithy Parade, Thornhill, was out walking a friend’s dog in Rectory Park when he was approached by two officers after stubbing out a cigarette and covering it in dirt.

Mr Blackburn, 67, said: “The men looked like they were from the council. I stubbed out my cigarette under a tree and they collared me for it.

“I was issued a £75 fine,

but when I offered to pick the cigarette up they said to me that it was too late and that they’d got it on film. What are they doing in a wood? They should be in the town centre.”

Mr Blackburn says he is contemplating taking the matter to court.

He said: “There are no bins at the bottom end of the park where I was, so what am I meant to do?”

Kingdom Services has been given a one-year trial

by Kirklees Council to see if it can clean up the streets. Bodycam-wearing officers are permitted to hand out fixed penalty notices for littering.

But the firm has come

under fire due to the reportedly heavy-handed way in which some staff members hand out fines.

Mirfield councillor Martyn Bolt has been vocal in opposing the company and their tactics and said: “I hadn’t realised they were patrolling parks and open spaces.

“Kirklees Council need to clarify where exactly they are doing it. They have never made it clear what the terms are.

“Kevin was walking his friend’s dog, there were no bins and he stubbed his cigarette out on the tree and pushed it into the dirt.”

spokesman said “Kingdom officers are authorised to fine people for breaching public space protection orders in all public spaces, including parks and open spaces.

“Anyone found dropping litter, whether there is a bin close by or not, can be charged a fine.

“We would suggest that once someone has stubbed out a cigarette, they keep it until they find a bin.”

Coun Bolt commented previously that despite the number of fines being handed out, litter remains on the streets because nobody is picking it up.

Mr Blackburn returned to the park several hours

later and claimed there was still litter all over the grass.

Said Coun Bolt: “The public needs to know that Kingdom have no right to call the police. They have no right to get your details.”

The officers always do their patrolling in pairs and Coun Bolt added: “Most other operators have badges or high-vis jackets but all they have is a black fleece jacket.

“And who is vetting them? They should have a full criminal background check licensed by the council. They are a threatening presence going round in pairs.”

More pieces of our history ARTEFACTS from the battlefields of northern France will be consecrated in a Mirfield war memorial on Armed Forces Day. Town councillor Sean Guy picked up a piece of barbed wire and a shell fragment from a field near the Thiepval Memorial, which was on the Somme front line in 1916.

The shrapnel is a rim piece from a 13lb shell, and the 100year-old items will be added to the memorial at the Old Colonial pub on Dunbottle Lane.

The monument was created at the pub several years ago and contains artefacts from conflict zones around the world, including a piece of the Berlin Wall, plants from Crete, Arnhem and Singapore, a piece of the yard at Auschwitz, granite from Monte Cassino, sand from Tobruk and beaches at Dieppe, Dunkirk and Normandy and a piece of coral brought back from Pearl Harbour.

By coincidence, landlord Tim Wood already owns a World War One shell casing of an identical type to the one that Coun Guy discovered.

You’ll be transported back to the 1700s MARCH your way back in time with a living history weekend at Oakwell Hall next month.

The Hall in Birstall will be transported back to the 1700s, when British Army troops were sent to stop an army of Scots who were marching south trying to put the Old Pretender, James Stuart, on the throne.

The scene will be set by a military unit lodged at Oakwell to recruit and train new soldiers – and to muster loyalty for the new Hanovarian King, George I. Visitors will be able to watch members of the Queen’s Regiment in their camp, performing drills and firing displays.

The one-off event takes place between 12noon and 5pm on Saturday July 8 and Sunday July 9 from 11am to 4pm.

It’s priced at £5 per adult and £2 per child, including entry to the Hall itself.

The event is supported by the Friends of Oakwell and there is a 50 per cent discount on entry for members of the Friends group.

Season’s preview OPERA NORTH and Kirklees Council will reveal the wonderful music and special guest line-up that’s planned for the Kirklees Concert Season 2017/18 in a preview event at Dewsbury Town Hall next week.

Favourite band is back again A GROUP that has won its way through to the finals of this year’s national brass band championships will be entertaining locals who turn up for their 10th anniversary concert at Batley Town Hall tomorrow (Sat).

The Hammonds Saltaire Band is a big favourite in Batley, and Saturday’s programme contains a number of ‘summer prom’ pieces which have proved so popular in the past.

Conducted by musical director Morgan Griffiths the band will tackle such numbers as Quality Plus, Miss Blue Bonnett and Evergreen in the opening stages before moving on another strand which includes Showboat, My Fair Lady and The Sound of Music.

Many more favourites are included in the finale approach, such as Rule Britannia, A Fantasia of British Sea Songs and Abide With Me. And, in traditional fashion, the concert will round up with the highly emotive Pomp and Circumstance March.

The band had an early success this year when it came second to Black Dyke Band in the Yorkshire Brass Band championships.

In doing so it beat other well-known bands such as as Brighouse, Grimethorpe and Carlton Main.

As a result the Hammonds Band and Black Dyke Band were chosen to represent Yorkshire in the National Brass Band Championships, which will be staged at the Royal Albert Hall in October.

Tickets for Saturday’s Batley concert are priced at £12 for adults, £10 for concessions and £5 for children.

Story of undying love in Oakwell garden A ROMANTIC evening of open-air theatre is coming to Oakwell Hall next week with a showing of one of the greatest romances in English literature.

Chapterhouse Theatre Company is presenting Charlotte Bronte’s ‘Jayne Eyre’ on Wednesday, June 21 in the walled gardens of the historic house.

It is the story of undying

love between young governess Jane Eyre and the enigmatic Mr Rochester.

The performance starts at 7.30pm with the gardens open for viewing and picnics from 6pm.

Audience members are encouraged to bring rugs or low-backed chairs and picnics, although refreshments will be available during the interval.

WHILE they’re still hugely popular on TV, Ant & Dec have no plans to return to the land of pantomime. The duo appeared in panto at the Sunderland Empire back in 1994, when there were groups of Sunderland supporters picketing the theatre because Ant and Dec are well-known Newcastle supporters. Dec recalls it well, and said: “It was rather scary at the time as we were so young, but now looking back, a bit of good fun.”

POLDARK actor Aidan Turner has vowed never to show off his skills on Strictly Come Dancing, saying he ‘can’t stand’ the show. The BBC are less than thrilled with this ringing endorsement of their biggest variety show – Poldark is shown on the BBC, and now PR spinners for Turner are claiming that it was just a ‘tongue-in-cheek’ statement.

THE BBC were planning to build a mosque on the new £15m EastEnders set as the show aims to be as authentic as modern East London. But that idea has now bitten the dust due to claims that it will be too expensive, and they will now just be recreating the set as it stands, with better detail for HD TV. ROBSON GREEN and Sue Johnston are to lead the cast of a new BBC One drama from the pen of Poldark writer Debbie Horsfield. The pair will star in Age Before Beauty, a family saga set in a Manchester salon which will air in six parts and feature the likes of Polly Walker (Mr Selfridge) and Lisa Riley (Three Girls). Robson assured fans that this will not affect his role in the ITV hit show Grantchester.

CORONATION STREET is set to air in fans’ homes six times a week from the autumn – yet fans are already leaving in droves due to dire storylines and depressing content. ITV though dismiss this and believe that they can make even more money

SERIES TWO of Harry Hill’s Tea Time is set to be filmed this June and July. Guests will include Sir Trevor McDonald, Gregg Wallace and Kate Humble. According to Sky, who paid millions for the services of comedian Harry, they believe they have created “something for the whole family”.

AFTER the success of the Great British Bake Off and in a deal to keep him sweet, the BBC offered star baker Paul Hollywood a show called the ‘Big Continental Road Trip’ as a ruse to make him stay on the channel. Well, ratings have failed to rise, like some of his loaves, and so far plans for a second series are now on hold.

ACTRESS Patsy Kensit, who has appeared in Holby City and Emmerdale, tells me that she struggles to get great work offered on TV, as people assume “You’re always being offered great big film roles and that there is a stigma to that as well. I am just an actress who loves to work, and all that’s required is a great role, and right now those are in TV, it seems to me.”

PAUL O’GRADY has revealed that he took on Blind Date because he was worried about who would present it if he didn’t. He explained that initially his close friendship with the late Cilla Black made him hesitant to say yes to the role, but the prospect of a reality TV star presenting the reboot made him reconsider. “I can’t be having that I thought, so I signed up and here I am,” he said.

‘OUTNUMBERED’ actor Hugh Dennis has signed up to host the one-off TV show Possibly ... The Best Adverts in The World. The two-hour show, which is recorded in front of a studio audience, will be on ITV later this year.

Aled said: “I would love to see the show move into a prime-time slot as we have some great guests, but that is up to the bosses of ITV in the end.”

IT APPEARS that ITV’s plans to make more money from top shows like Loose Women and Coronation Street have failed. They had hoped to lure product placement into many shows, but advertisers still feel it’s better to advertise ‘up front’ rather than get lost in the background of say This Morning, with the occasional shot of their product.

Plans for a Loose Women perfume were also scrapped as the ratings for the show decrease each series.

Historic former club opens as low-cost gym THE FORMER Batley Frontier Club is being reopened today (Friday) as a state-of-the-art gym.

The building on Bradford Road, which played host to the likes of Shirley Bassey and Louis Armstrong in its Variety Club heyday, closed at the end of July last year.

JD Gyms took over the premises and invested £2m in its renovation.

Maureen Prest, the former promotions manager at Batley Variety Club and author of a biography of its founder James Corrigan, will be opening the new venture at 11am.

JD Gyms have also paid homage to the significance of the building and the part it played in the social history of Batley by transforming the entrance into a giant collage of photographs from the star-studded days of its famous past.

The new gym boasts hundreds of pieces of top-of-the-range fitness equipment, along with a sauna, ladies-only gym space and the region’s largest free-weights area.

HANGING HEATON MISS OUT ON SEMI-FINAL IT WAS third time unlucky for Hanging Heaton when they failed to pull off a third successive victory over Townville this season in their quarter final of the Heavy Woollen Cup competition.

Although making runs galore at the top of the innings this season, the Bennett Lane men had an ignominious start.

Their big four of Gary Fellows, Nick Connolly, Richard Foster and Callum Geldart were back in the pavilion with only 48 runs between them.

Joe Fraser 41, James Keen 33, and Ishy Dawood 37, helped push the total beyond the 200 mark.

However the final total of 207 all out never looked like being

enough as Townville skipper Nick Bresnan made his old Hanging Heaton teammates suffer.

As well as taking the wickets of Geldart and the dangerous bighitter David Stiff, Bresnan ran out Foster and then went on to make 12 runs in a fifth-wicket stand with man-of-the-match Jack Hughes.

Hughes also picked up two wickets but it was his match best 101, off 88 balls, that really swung the game Townville’s way and by the time he was out his side were only seven short of victory with four wickets and seven overs in hand.

After winning the first post-war final with a one-wicket win over

Ossett, at Batley, Hanging Heaton won six and lost ten finals before joining the Bradford League in 1980.

At that time Bradford League clubs were not involved in the competition as dates clashed with the Bradford League programme schedules.

But Hanging Heaton were a driving force behind the decision to open it up in 1996 and promptly reached the final again in only the second season of open competition.

As one of only two remaining clubs in this year’s quarter finals who were in the original qualification area (within a nine-mile radius of Batley Town Hall) it is a

disappointment to traditionalists to see the Dewsbury club making an exit at this stage.

But Oakenshaw side Woodlands, only six miles from Batley, saw off holders New Farnley to book their place in the semi-final.

The South Yorkshire clash between Whitley Hall and Hoylandswaine is still to be decided but Kirkburton secured their place in the last four with a 73run win over Wrenthorpe.

This season marks the 125th anniversary of the inauguration of the Heavy Woollen Cup in 1883 and is renowned as the oldest knockout competition in Britain.

Joe Fraser’s score of 41 was Hanging Heaton’s highest

Butt enjoying the form of his career with Hartshead HARTSHEAD MOOR were disappointed to find themselves in the third tier of Bradford League cricket after their dismal showing in Championship B last season saw them finish 119 points adrift of Championship 1 qualification for the current campaign.

But a concerted close-season recruitment effort has seen the Highmoor Lane side more than double last season’s win record already.

With eight wins from eight games, ahead of tomorrow’s visit of Carlton, Moor already have a massive 39-point lead over second-placed Northowram Fields as they charge headlong toward pro-

motion.

There’s no doubt about the impact of Iain Wardlaw’s return to the club as the former Yorkshire and Scotland paceman has already picked up 27 wickets at 11.52 to become the highest wicket taker in the entire league so far.

In addition Mohammed Khan, another former Cleckheaton man, has 348 runs at an average of 87.00 .

Former Bowling Old Lane all-rounder Ahsan Butt is enjoying a new lease of life with 230 runs to date.

Butt made a great start to the season with Bowling Old Lane last year but became a little disillusioned and declared himself unavailable

for much of the rest of the season.

Although the newcomers have made a big difference with their individual batting and bowling contributions, they have also lifted those who struggled last season and their seven-wicket win at Altofts not only featured a knock of 59 from Butt, but there was a fine 81 from longserving Craig Field.

That has left skipper Danny Squire’s men full of confidence ahead of tomorrow’s game.

It is a different story at the other end of the table, though, as third-bottom Spen Victoria are only five points clear of the relegation places.

Hanging Heaton too strong for Cleck THE ALL ROUNDER Cricket Bradford Premier League season may only be nine games old but Hanging Heaton must feel like they are playing in a cup final every week. The Premier Division leaders go to lowly East Bierley this week but skipper Gary Fellows will be anxious to guard against complacency.

His side were chasing honours on four fronts up to last weekend but Sunday’s Heavy Woollen Cup exit at the hands of Townville would have been a big disappointment.

Yet another double weekend is facing the side this week when they follow the league game at Bierley with a home game in the ECB National Club KO competition on Sunday.

After a difficult start to the season Cleckheaton’s fortunes had picked up but they never looked like upsetting Hanging Heaton’s party when the two sides met at Bennett Lane.

Andy Gorrod held the first part of the Cleckheaton innings together with a patiently compiled top scoring 51, before being fourth out with the score on 97, but thereafter the innings crumbled. The fifth wicket went down with the score on 118 and the rest added just 12 runs.

Gary Fellows (46) and Nick Connolly (33) put on 77 for the first wicket in reply and though they were both out, in the league leaders’ eventual eight-wicket win, Australian born Connolly is now just six runs short of 500 for the season and he and Fellows have over 800 between them already this summer.

Cleckheaton, at home to Bradford and Bingley this week, are in the bottom half of the table and while there is a good chance of Scholes returning to the top flight next season they could well be just replacing Batley.

It is a troubling time for bottom-club Batley in their debut Premier Division campaign as they entertain fellow-strugglers New Farnley in their 10th game of the season tomorrow desperately still searching for a first win.

With third-bottom New Farnley already 25 points ahead of them, this is a game Batley really must win if they are to avoid their season being written off before it has really begun.

IN WEDNESDAY’S draw for the semi-final of the Heavy Woollen Cup, Hanging Heaton’s quarter-final victors Townville will be at home to Oakenshaw side Woodlands, while in the Crowther Cup quarter final Woodlands Seconds will be at home to Birstall Seconds.

Ossett find themselves in the bottom six while Gomersal, at home to Wrenthorpe and bottom club Birstall, at home to Baildon, are currently sat alongside them at the wrong end of the table.

BEN MATHER grabbed a sensational hat-trick as Mirfield Stags swept aside play-off hopefuls Skirlaugh Bulls to earn a secondsuccessive Yorkshire Men’s League victory.

Mather bagged tries either side of the interval, with the Stags coming from behind to seal a terrific 28-14 victory on away soil.

It was the home side who started the brighter as they took the lead on eight minutes, Lewis Hames crossed the whitewash after the centre found room to touch down on the left side.

Home half-back Bradley Sprices converted and Skirlaugh moved 6-0 in front.

The Stags responded almost immediately, with a score just four minutes later.

Prop Mather shoved off one defender before charging over the line, however, Ben Cole was unable to convert.

Mirfield continued their momentum as they moved 10 points in front, courtesy of two quick-fire tries.

Mather added his second of the game as the front-rower drove over beneath the posts, after Chris Aked was held up on the right flank.

Three minutes later, Scott Bradley, making a rare appearance at hooker, continued his tryscoring form following his double last weekend.

Cole was easily able to add the extras on both occasions, putting the visiting Stags two scores clear at 16-6.

Skirlaugh stemmed the tide of Stags pressure with a try late in the half as Jordan Branon latched onto a quick pass from Sprices.

But Mirfield re-established their 10-point cushion just three minutes into the second period with a sensational third touchdown from Mather.

The prop broke the Bulls’ line on the halfway line and, despite having men in support, Mather sprinted to score in the corner and seal a try-of-the-season contender.

After a long period of goal-line defending from Mirfield, a comfortably converted penalty by Cole on the hour mark put the visitors two scores clear.

Skirlaugh did manage to turn their substantial second-half territory into points late in the period as winger Jon Greendale dived over.

But Mirfield wrapped up a hard-fought victory with a try in the last play of the game as Phil Shotton broke through the Skirlaugh line and scored under the posts.

Boys continue dominance YML Premier Division

BATLEY BOYS came away with victory against Bentley in a tough encounter that saw the Boys rack up their seventh win from seven games.

Josh Knowles scored twice and made over 40 tackles in a man-ofthe-match performance, with forwards Matthew Sheridan, Gavin Davies, Sean Whittaker, Josh O’Sullivan and Ryan Crossley creating the platform for another superb Batley victory.

notched tries in the first half, with Bingham adding two goals to give Batley a 16-6 lead at half-time.

Bentley began the second half in a fierce fashion but the Boys weathered the early storm as Jay Jay Price scored after a great pass from Joe O’Hanlon.

Damo Fletcher then provided an assist for Josh Ritcher. A short ball from Ryan Crossley then sent Knowles on a 55-metre break to put the game beyond the hosts.

Bentley added two consolation scores before a scuffle broke out between the players late in the game.

Batley host Beverley in their next league game at 2.30pm tomorrow afternoon.

FEELING CHAMPION: Mirfield Free Grammar Year 9s celebrate Kirklees Cup victory

THE MIRFIELD FREE GRAMMAR YEAR 9 rugby team have been crowned the Kirklees Cup Champions for the third consecutive year after comfortably beating Shelley College 32-0 last Friday.

The final victory comes after what has been a hugely successful year for the Year 9 side as they have defeated numerous teams regionally and nationally to qualify for the Champion Schools National Final, which will take place on Friday August 25 in Richmond, London.

They will play Glantaf from Wales in what is expected to be an entertaining game. The team will also take part in the

schools parade at Wembley before the Challenge Cup final on Saturday 26 August.

“We have been building something very special with this team and competing nationally is completely different to winning the Kirklees Cup,” said Robert Fryer, who is a PE teacher at Mirfield Free Grammar.

“The boys have been exceptional and have developed into a wonderful team with great team spirit.

“I am very proud of all of them and hope we can be crowned National Champions in August.”

BATLEY further stretched their gap between themselves and the relegation abyss with a well-deserved victory.

The damage was done by the visitors in the lead up to half-time, when they rattled home 12 points without reply to add to their existing lead.

It was also a hard-fought game, typified by Swinton’s Rob Lever, who twice underwent treatment during the opening 15 minutes, when both sides ended with 12 on the pitch.

The blustery wind took time to get acclimatised to, both sides’ first opportunities getting caught in the breeze, resulting in a Cain Southernwood pass to Wayne Reittie being forward and then a pass from Grant Gore to Oliver Davies being likewise.

Another forward pass from Pat Walker to Brad Day was as clear as Theresa May’s despair at the Thursday night election results.

But a smart grubber from Walker saw the wind finally used to someone’s advantage, Shaun Robinson lost it and Shaun Ainscough capitalised.

Five substitutes were thrown on in a matter of minutes in the middle of the half but to little immediate effect, as both sides were tackling well with Gore and Walker kicking solidly too.

The influence of the Bulldogs’ subs became painfully evident as the half wore on, with Alex Rowe and James Brown being powerful and tough to ground while Alistair Leak spotted the gaps they created.

From the resulting penalty, the Bulldogs chose to tap, Leak then sent over the second rower who earned the original infringement.

Leak was involved again in the pick of the half’s tries.

First, Danny Cowling fended off Robinson and released Ainscough before Jack Murphy got across to produce a fine covering tackle.

Quick thinking from Leak saw him dart over from dummy half but Walker failed to add a third conversion.

An early injury in the second half to Gore lead to another blue reshuffle with Ben White moving into the half-backs from the centres.

Shortly afterwards, Atkin’s mean change of direction created space for Anthony Bate to race onto his pass, with

Atkin then goaling and giving Swinton hope.

That hope was swiftly evaporated as Atkin threw a ball into touch above Robinson’s grasp, Batley worked the ball down the field, culminating in Cowling using a three-on-one overlap to score on the left.

It was then frustration time once again for the Lions after a fine build up, Anthony Nicholson swiped the ball one on one, a Bulldogs penalty gave Swinton field position, only for Hankinson to knock on in the act of scoring.

Three minutes later, Atkin flung another errant pass to Sam Smeaton who galloped the best part of 90 metres, having just enough gas to hold off Mike Butt while scoring.

White was enjoying his time back in the halves, a lovely lofted pass released Robinson down the flanks, who was just ankle tapped by the Batley cover with only the tryline ahead of him.

It was oh-so-nearly interception try number two for Smeaton, again off an Atkin ball but the centre’s final pass to Reittie was out of reach and the ball nudged forward by his fingertips.

It was White who was the architect of Swinton’s second try, firing away Oliver Davies, brilliantly supported by prop Andy Bracek, who raced in from 30 metres out.

White also on target with the conversion.

The potential for a brawl was there all game and after a few skirmishes, a full size one resulted in both number 16s being ejected from the field for the final couple of minutes, as Bate and Tom Lillycrop were both sinbinned.

Southernwood nearly made an academic final Batley score for James Harrison, but it was also ruled out for a forward pass.

JUNIOR RUGBY LEAGUE New Earswick All Blacks U-16s 6 Dewsbury Celtic U-16s 38 DEWSBURY CELTIC UNDER-16s completed the double over York-based New Earswick All Blacks with a comfortable victory on Sunday afternoon.

Celtic opened their account in just three minutes after a powerful carry from Lewis Teale set up a platform for scrum-half Charlie Heaton to score.

With just over 15 minutes played Conor Appleyard broke through the All Blacks line from inside his own 20 and raced the length of the field to double the lead.

Heaton then scored his second of the afternoon as he darted through a gap to put his side 16 points ahead.

Five minutes before the break New Earswick spilled the ball on their own 20 and after a powerful drive by centre George Hirst, supported by good hands from Teale, Ethan O’Hanlon finished the move off with a fine try.

Teale then broke from inside his own half and fed the ball to George Hirst. Hirst barged his way over the line to give Celtic a 26-point advantage at the interval.

Appleyard notched his second try of the game shortly into the second half, and Heaton added the extras to put Celtic out of sight.

The visitors drew level as Kia Denvers scored out wide. Then came the try of the game as Matty Butterworth raced the length of the field to score under the posts.

The hosts began to put some pressure on the Celtic defence but a clever drop goal from Fraser Wallace gave Celtic some breathing space.

Jordan Callaghan then produced one of the moments of the match as he raced across the field and made a ferocious tackle to prevent a certain try.

Kings Park did score a late try but the clock was against them as Celtic held on for the win.

King Cross Park U-14s 14 Dewsbury Celtic U-14s 17 CELTIC UNDER-14s were back in action this past week after a three-week break, defeating King Cross Park in a gripping encounter.

Ethan Parkinson was the first player to cross the whitewash after a strong run saw him score under the posts and help Celtic to a 6-0 lead, however King Park hit back to take a 10-6 lead at the break.

A determined second-half display from the green and whites saw Celtic take the spoils.

SHAW CROSS SHARKS Under-9s travelled to Stanningley in what was a competitive match.

Both teams turned up with large squads which allowed a good run-out for all.

Opposition man of the match was shared between Seb Jeffers, Bailey Woods and Teddy Dawson, who also took home the title of top tackler.

Parents’ players awards were handed to Charlie Tilford, Bailey Woods and Harvey Cavanagh.

Coaches’ awards were given to Charlee Raby for completing tackles, Ben Tranter for his ball handling skills and Ellis Peake for outstanding commitment after a return from injury.

Top trainer was awarded to Jacob Stevenson.

at Trailfinders Sports Club LONDON made up all but five of their 49-point deficit against Toulouse as they ran in nine tries to beat Dewsbury.

Former London Academy player John Sullivan, who took his own life in 2014, was remembered as part of the State of Mind round of games and the teams played for the John Sullivan Trophy.

This game was very similar to the Broncos’ victory over Halifax a week ago.

London scored five first-half tries and survived two or three close shaves in their defensive end.

Will Barthau got things started with a magnificent 70metre break for the opening try in the seventh minute and Alex Walker doubled the lead 10 minutes later when he finished off a move started by a 50-metre Barthau break.

Dewsbury struggled to slow London down and were then caught out thinking more of defence out wide than at the play the ball, from where Andy Ackers nipped over from dummy half.

From the restart, the Broncos made two consecutive handling errors, but

their defence stood firm and Dale Morton was denied a score when he appeared to put a foot in touch.

London’s response was another score, in the 27th minute, when Ben Hellewell went over from close range.

The kick-off following Kieran Dixon’s conversion – he kicked eight out of nine – rolled dead, but Dewsbury were penalised for a forward pass and then dissent turned the scrum into a penalty.

Walker sent Michael Channing through a huge gap for London’s fifth score of the half and after forcing a pair of goal-line drop-outs, Sam Day dozed at dummy half, and knocked-on two metres from the Broncos’ line.

The second half saw a much-improved Rams defensive performance.

Apart from an Api Pewhairangi score after 54 minutes, it was only in the final 12 minutes that their line was breached.

Before then, Dewsbury did waste some excellent field position with handling errors.

But they then had a pair of tries to celebrate.

Just before the hour mark, on the back of a repeat set, the Rams moved the ball from left to right, and Lucas Walshaw picked out an unmarked Gareth Potts with a long pass to the right wing.

Four minutes later, a grub-

ber from Paul Sykes was kicked forward by James Glover and he was able to fall on the ball in the in-goal area. Glover, first, and Sykes, both failed with their conversion attempts.

In the last dozen minutes, Dewsbury rather ran out of gas and, on the back of two powerful Mark Offerdahl runs, Walker completed his double.

With five minutes to go, Dixon made a strong run down the right wing, cut inside and he found Pewhairangi, who scored untouched.

Sykes, who, post-match, was recognised for his services to the Broncos at the start of his career, left the pitch 70 seconds early, sin-binned for a tired high tackle on Eddie Battye.

And, against 12 men, with the hooter about to sound, Pewhairangi completed his hat-trick with another simple score between the uprights.

London coach Andrew Henderson said: “We were excellent again in the first half, but there was a little bit of putting the cue on the rack at half-time. We talked about it last week.

“But I am being a bit super-critical because I am very pleased with the overall performance. We are in a good position as a team.

“The next three games – against the rest of the top three – are massive for us.”

Wounded Sharks suffer heavy defeat NCL Division One

SHAW CROSS SHARKS are still searching for their first home win in the National Conference Division One after they came out second best against league leaders Underbank Rangers.

Due to a pre-arranged event the Sharks were missing both members of their coaching staff and made several changes from the side that slipped to defeat against York Acorn last weekend, as well as only naming 16 players on their teamsheet.

The visitors started the game on top but were unable to breach the Shaw Cross line after valiant defence from the hosts.

Toronto Wolfpack trialist Casey Clark opened the scoring with 15 minutes gone as he barged his way over from close range.

The referee waited for the tacklers to roll away before awarding the score and waved away any appeals for double movement.

Liam Green reduced the deficit for Shaw Cross moments later as he gathered a difficult offload from Brandan French and went over in the corner.

Richard Knight and French were then sent to the sin-bin after Knight hit French off the ball.

French was frustrated to be given 10 minutes after the Sharks’ number 12 did not retaliate to the incident.

Two quick-fire tries before half-time put some daylight between the sides.

Sam Ansell took advantage of a

knock-on to score his first of the afternoon before Sam Rochford sold a dummy to dart over under the sticks.

Underbank sealed the win inside the first seven minutes of the second half.

Courtney Allette went over after the ball was moved out wide to the left.

Ansell went over for his second try of the game after he gathered a knock on from Sam Ottewell.

Some soft defending from Shaw Cross then allowed the winger to move infield and score by the posts.

Ottewell then showcased some superb individual play as he chased back to prevent a certain try, tackling the attacker and legally stealing the ball in the process.

Owen Restall put Underbank further ahead as the ball was moved out wide and then back inside to the centre who dived over under the posts.

Ansell then completed his hattrick as the ball was moved out right and the visitors had the numbers needed for him to comfortably get over the whitewash.

Underbank received their second yellow card of the game as Rochford was penalised for a late tackle.

Stand-in coach and club chairman Chris Smith was proud of the team’s efforts despite what was a disappointing result.

“It was a big effort from the lads today against a strong side on a roll. I’m very proud of the work the players put in but we were just outmuscled by a team in top form,” said Smith.

“They have put 60 points past a few teams and we had some tight calls go against us so there is no need to panic.”

THORNHILL TROJANS leapfrogged Crosfields into third in National Conference Division Two and moved to within one point of the automatic promotion places with a comfortable victory on Saturday afternoon.

George Stott produced a man-of-thematch performance from second row with a superb defensive display as well as scoring two tries.

It was all Thornhill in the opening exchanges when twice they were bundled into touch close to the line as well as seeing Josh Lister held up over the line.

Crosfields came out on top when the sides met at the beginning of April and took a controversial lead as they looked to complete the double over Thornhill.

Joe Clark made a dart for the posts but looked to have been held up after a strong tackle from Will Poching, the referee awarded a try much to the frustration of the Thornhill players, Jack Reid converted to give the visitors a six-point lead.

The Trojans remained undeterred and got their reward in the run-up to half-time. Josh Clough was tackled close to the line but a quick play the ball allowed Stott to power over for Thornhill’s opening try.

DEWSBURY CELTIC are still searching for their second win in the third division of the National Conference after defeat at home to Stanningley.

Second-placed Stanningley took a 15th-minute lead with a try from Jack Brier.

Celtic hit back with the first of two tries from George Senior as Tom Halloran landed the conver-

sion successfully.

The Leeds-based side hit back for a 14-6 half-time lead as Ben Ward and Sean Cooper crossed for tries with one Logan Pitts conversion.

Jermaine Ruan, who was sinbinned for use of the elbow, added a try eight minutes into the second period with one from Jack Smith on the hour plus two Ben Selby goals.

Senior added his second for Celtic, who had Danny Thomas binned for punching, as Pat Foulstone goaled before a late Potts drop-goal.

Moor fail to weather Storm NCL Division Three STAR MAN: Man of the match George Stott scored twice as Thornhill beat Crosfields the interval as Liam Morley ran onto a pass and went over for Thornhill’s second.

In the second half Thornhill pulled clear. Luke Haigh sent a pass to Morley, who in turn found George Woodcock and he raced away for a score in the corner.

The ball was worked along the attacking line to Will Gledhill, he flung the ball to Joss Ratcliffe who also went over for an unconverted try in the corner.

After four unconverted tries Danny

Ratcliffe stepped up to take over the kicking duties and edged Thornhill further ahead with two penalty goals.

Woodcock sealed the win for Thornhill as he picked up a loose ball and proved too quick for the chasing defenders as he broke clear to score, and Ratcliffe converted.

On the stroke of full-time Stott added his second try of the game. The second rower broke clear to score underneath the posts, and Ratcliffe converted to wrap up a brilliant afternoon for the Trojans.

AN UNDER-STRENGTH Dewsbury Moor forfeited a 12-4 half-time lead as they lost away to Gateshead Storm on Saturday afternoon.

The defeat sees Moor drop to sixth place in the table, level on points with Gateshead in seventh, with Dewsbury’s superior points difference keeping them in the play-off places.

A late try from man-of-the-match Patrick Hargreaves secured victory

for Gateshead.

The Storm were 4-12 down at the break but rallied early in the second half. Storm’s James Pocklington broke the deadlock on 21 minutes with a try before Moor responded.

Tries from Jamie Samme and Bartley O’Brien plus two Jacob Flathers goals gave them their halftime lead.

Tries from Thomas Skidmore, Stephen Welton and Michael Mitchell plus three Chris Parker Jnr goals took the Storm into a 22-12 lead. Jake Bardell replied for Moor before Hargreaves went in.

Rams face fixture pile-up

By Ben McKenna DEWSBURY head coach Neil Kelly says he needs to make full use of his squad as the Rams prepare for three games in seven days.

The Rams travel to league leaders Hull KR this Sunday before a mid-week trip to Oldham on Wednesday, before hosting second-placed Toulouse at the Tetley’s Stadium next Sunday.

Kelly wants to make sure he utilises all the players available to him as he aims to drag Dewsbury out of the bottom two – and says that a win over Oldham on Wednesday is hugely significant in their survival bid.

No other Championship team has won in Hull this year but Kelly is looking to the clash at Stalybridge as Dewsbury’s best chance to post a win.

“Sunday is a big game for us, against the team who are top of the table, we have three games in a week and we need to be careful how we pick our teams, we are going to need our full squad to get through this week,” said Kelly.

“In many ways Sunday’s game will be a similar challenge to the game against London.

“We didn’t defend their 20metre area very well and that needs to improve.

DEWSBURY have secured the services of loan signings Sam Day, Daniel Igbinedion and Billy Hayes until the end of the season.

Day was on a weekly loan deal with the Rams and could have been recalled by his parent club Featherstone at any time, but he has now agreed to stay for the remainder of the year – with the victory over Bradford two weeks ago a key influence in his decision.

“I’ve really enjoyed my time here so far, I think I’ve settled in well, and I’m just looking forward to getting a few games together week after week now,” said Day. “My main goal for the season is to help get us out of that relegation zone and I’m sure we can definitely do that, especially if we build on the performance against Bradford.

“We still have players coming back from injury and others fighting to get in, so I’m just concentrating on playing well every week and hopefully keeping my spot.”

Piper leaves Cleck

BATLEY boss Matt Diskin says that the fans have “every right to criticise” him and his team after what has been an inconsistent campaign so far for the Bulldogs.

Diskin has faced some backlash on social media from Batley fans over the past few weeks but believes his players have responded well in their last two games.

“The players put their hearts on their sleeve every week. The fans have got every right to criticise but they do not see all the things that go on behind the scenes,” said Diskin.

Batley host Sheffield this Sunday and Diskin’s men produced one of their best performances when they defeated Sheffield Eagles 54-10 earlier in the year.

Contrasting fortunes since have seen the South Yorkshire side climb above Batley in the Kingstone Press Championship, but the Bulldogs are full of confidence after two encouraging performances.

“A lot of water has passed under the bridge since we beat Sheffield, they are above us in the table now and they are a real dangerous proposition for us come Sunday,” said Diskin.

“We were disciplined and we controlled the game at Swinton, we were fantastic – it is the best 40 minutes we have played this year.

“I thought the second-half performance against Swinton was a bit scrappy, however the thing that won us the game was our performance in the first 40 minutes.

“I think we have made some real strides forward and if we continue to perform and improve, long term we are going to be a real tough proposition for any team in this league.”

“He is a calming influence to the people around him, his kicking game and the direction he gave the team was fantastic so it is a big plus to have him back.”

AFTER spending his whole playing career at Cleckheaton RUFC, club captain Richard Piper has made the decision to sign for Huddersfield RUFC and make the step up to National League Two. Piper exclusively told the Press that he felt the opportunity offered was simply too good to turn down as he will be playing in England’s fourth tier.

The number eight spent 12 years playing for Cleckheaton at senior level and says that he does not regret staying at his hometown club for so long.

“It was a hard decision not going in previous years, I haven’t regretted staying all these years but this time round if I didn’t go I felt like I might have regretted it,” said Piper.

“I have been asked for a good number of years to join sides in National Two, I stayed at Cleckheaton because all my mates played and we played at a good standard in National Three.

“I am 29 now and I won’t get many more opportunities to step up.”

Piper will always have an eye on Cleck’s

progress and believes that they have the capability to bounce straight back to the National League after relegation last season.

He said: “Cleckheaton is a top club with top lads, we dropped out of the National League last season but we got there with no money and local lads and it can be done again.

“The new coach will come with new ideas and hopefully the lads can buy into it.

“We are a better side than we showed last year, going down was more due to our own personal mistakes, the lads just need to settle a bit and push on.”

The Cleckheaton stalwart has said that he would not have moved up two divisions to Huddersfield if he didn’t believe he could get a regular place in the starting 15.

He said: “I wouldn’t have gone if I didn’t think I would be playing in the first team regularly.

“Getting fitter is going to help my game out as well, I have been working harder in the off-season to try and reach the level I need to be at.”
