By Zoe Shackleton A CLUB owner says he’s been left “paranoid” after his venue was targeted by thieves and vandalised for the second time in three months.

The Live Room on Northgate, Cleckheaton, was ransacked in the early hours of Tuesday morning when the culprits stole DJ, musical and IT equipment and caused thousands of pounds’-worth of damage, including smashing six TVs. Owner Mick Appleyard said he will now step up security measures.

He said: “We had only just got over the last robbery and then this happens again.

“You do get paranoid. Since we last got done over, there’s been about five or six crimes in the area.

“It’s frustrating but there isn’t much we can do. We’ll just keep going. This won’t beat us, we will be

open as usual this weekend. We need to step up security but there are no patrols at that time of night; police said if they want to get in then they will.”

Mr Appleyard, 41, estimates that around £6,000-worth of damage has been done to the live music venue that opens on Friday and Saturday nights.

The venue is offering a reward for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of those responsible.

The Live Room has only been open for 18 months and had to cope with a break-in over the Easter weekend, when thieves caused £3,000-worth of damage, took around £16,000 in cash and made off with the CCTV system.

After the latest burglary, Mr Appleyard had to rely on footage from the nearby Titan Business Centre, which was also recently broken into.

He said: “They’ve been in there about an hour, which is a long time.

They left and came back with a car and loaded it up.

“They look like tall, slim lads but you can’t really see their faces. I think it is the same people but there isn’t much the police can do. They don’t really follow anything up. The problem is, you get put in a queue and they forget to follow it up. It is a bit like headbutting a brick wall.”

A number of local hostelries and entertainment venues have been targeted in recent months, with venues in Birstall, Batley, Heckmondwike, White Lee and Cleckheaton all reporting overnight burglaries.

A spokesperson for West Yorkshire Police said: “Police were called at around 11am on Tuesday, July 18, following a report of burglary at the Live Room on Northgate in Cleckheaton. The incident is believed to have occurred between 9.30pm on Monday, July 17, and 11am on Tuesday, July 18.

“A number of items were stolen during the incident. Enquiries are ongoing and anyone with any information is asked to contact police via 101 quoting 13170328973.”

On stage: Fun, fast-paced tale of rugby league’s history girls

By Zoe Shackleton BATLEY BULLDOGS Girls’ under-16 team became history makers in 2015 when they were the first British girls’ rugby league team to tour Australia.

Now their story is being brought to life on stage, in a new play that follows the tale of inspirational young women as they overcome friendship dramas, racial discrimination and deeplyhidden family secrets.

Directed by Joyce Branagh, ‘The Ruck’ will premiere at Huddersfield’s Lawrence Batley Theatre in September, focusing on a group of girls who grew up together and are ready for tough challenges on and off the pitch – but are they prepared for what is in store on the other side of the world?

‘The Ruck’ was the brainchild of playwright Kevin Fegan, whose inspiration came from watching and spending time with the players and their families after taking up their invitation to join them in Australia.

The team, formed in 2012 and coached by the father of one of the girls, have twice won their age group championship.

Said Kevin: “For me, the true inspiration for the play are the girls and their families. Watching the girls line up for training on the beach, they personify girl power: all shapes and sizes, cele-

News In Brief Rail station shuts down for weekend DEWSBURY: Train services will be severely disrupted when Dewsbury railway station closes for a weekend next month.

The Wellington Road station is set to shut on Saturday and Sunday August 5 and 6 for major works, meaning no trains will operate in or out of the station.

Replacement buses will run from the station car park area. TransPennine Express and Northern will operate up to 25 buses per hour between Leeds, Manchester, Manchester Airport, Halifax, Wakefield, Huddersfield, Dewsbury, Stalybridge and Bradford. Buses will also run between Manchester Piccadilly and Leeds.

Old signalling technology is being upgraded from local lineside boxes to the state-of-theart Rail Operating Centre in York, which Northern Rail say will result in a more reliable, modern and cost-effective railway.

Radio go-go!

DEWSBURY: Ofcom have renewed Christian radio station Branch FM’s licence for a further five years.

This will keep the Dewsbury-based station on air until November, 2022.

The station, broadcasting on 101.8 FM and online, is run by volunteers. It partners with local schools, colleges and universities to offer work placements for students as well as working with young people with special needs.

Manager Steve Hodgson said: “We are delighted to have the opportunity to develop this ministry further over the next five years.” brating themselves and their gender. “‘The Ruck’ is a fun, fast-moving, physical play, written in verse and prose with raps and music. It will be the first production initiated by Creative Scene to be staged at the LBT. Performances take place on

September 15-16 (7.30pm), before touring other theatres in Yorkshire until September 22.

Teenage fugitive sex offender tracked down

Police and medics were called to the scene in Batley

OAP injured in town centre ROADS in Batley town centre were closed after a pensioner was hit by a car.

An 80-year-old woman suffered head injuries after she was knocked down on Henrietta Street, outside Wellington House Surgery, at 10.20am on Tuesday, with the air ambulance called to the scene.

After hovering over the town for several minutes, the helicopter eventually landed off Mayman Lane.

Commercial Street onto Henrietta Street when the collision occurred.

A police spokesperson said the woman was taken to Leeds General Infirmary with serious injuries and the driver remained at the scene.

Henrietta Street and Upper Commercial Street were re-opened in the early afternoon.

Anyone who witnessed the collision or has any information is asked to contact police via 101, quoting log number 564 of July 18.

A ROMANIAN teenager wanted by police for child sex offences was arrested in Batley on Monday.

Florin Sztoica, 18, was sentenced to 30 months in prison in Romania but fled the country and was subject to a European Arrest Warrant.

Police believed he was working and living in Dewsbury and arrested him after extensive enquiries.

News In Brief Man in underpants rescued from ledge DEWSBURY: A man wearing little more than his underpants locked himself out of his flat and had to be rescued from a window ledge after climbing a drainpipe to get back in.

The 36-year-old was too scared to move until firefighters from Dewsbury came to his rescue at around 11.20am on Friday morning.

They coaxed him down around 50 minutes later.

Police closed the road during the incident.

Town heritage walk BATLEY: Local historian Malcolm Haigh will lead a guided walk for older people around Batley town centre on Tuesday (July 25).

The hour-long Heritage Walk is organised by the Royal Voluntary Service and Prudential UK and will start from Batley Older People’s Centre on Upper Commercial Street (1.30pm).

Fashion leader inspires graduates

Thief cornered HECKMONDWIKE: A thief who broke into a house on Leeds Old Road was found in the cellar after a neighbour raised the alarm.

Travis Neagle, 22, of Wood Avenue, had taken some jewellery from the house and admitted burglary when he appeared at Kirklees Magistrates’ Court.

He had already been given a two-year suspended jail sentence for previous offences of burglary and theft, so magistrates remanded him in custody to appear at Leeds Crown Court.

DEWSBURY: Charity organisation Kumon Y'all held its fifth annual Let's Unite event at Savile Town playing fields with volunteers hosting a barbecue, football tournament, archery and stalls.

HIGHER education students graduated from Kirklees College in a ceremony at Dewsbury Town Hall.

Students wore traditional gowns and caps to receive their certificates from college principal Marie Gilluley, chair of governors Geoff Alvy, guest speaker Nafisa Tosh and Dr Jonathan Eaton, head of learning and teaching enhancement at Teeside University.

Awards were made to 130 students in subjects including business, childhood studies, computing, fashion, fine art for design, graphic design, photography, performing arts, teaching, animal and

equine management, counselling and public services.

Nafisa Tosh, inset, is a former Kirklees College student who studied a HND in fashion at DABTAC (Dewsbury and Batley Technical and Arts College), and now lives and works in London.

She is a successful freelance fashion designer with her own label, a showpiece creator and also a fashion stylist and has been a regular at London, Paris and Milan fashion weeks.

THE new elderly care unit at Dewsbury and District Hospital has been a success so far, according to health bosses.

The Acute Care of the Elderly Assessment Unit has treated more than 100 patients since it opened in July, with almost half being discharged within two days.

The unit is part of the Mid Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust’s Acute Hospital Reconfiguration (AHR) programme of new services at Dewsbury Hospital, which will

lead to the downgrade of the A&E department.

The unit is said to improve patient care for the frail and elderly by having specialists in place to help patients receive the care and support they need as quickly as possible.

The team of therapists, social workers and medical staff are on hand to ensure prompt assessment and, if possible, early discharge to the most appropriate ward for the patient’s required treatment.

Dr Frank Phelan, head of

service for elderly medicine, said: “The new ACE units will bring together integrated assessment and care for our elderly patients.

“The provision of care in an elderly care unit brings high levels of dignity, care and compassion to some of our most vulnerable patients.”

A BATLEY drug dealer has been jailed for three-and-a-half years after police found more than £26,000-worth of Class A drugs in his house.

Mohammad Alam AswatBahadur, 31, of Rink Parade, Batley, was caught with a bag containing around 40 wraps of crack cocaine and 40 wraps of heroin, a blue wash bag that contained a further 123 grammes of heroin, some crushed cocaine and other bags containing more wraps of cocaine.

The cocaine reportedly had a street value of £1,038, the crack cocaine £9,452 and the heroin £15,862.

Police also found a dealer list, two sets of scales, latex gloves and around £135 in cash.

Leeds Crown Court heard that Aswat-Bahadur had lost his brother some years ago and was helping to look after his seriously ill father, who has now died. He was also a carer for his mother and had to cope with the breakdown of his marriage.

Jeremy Hill-Baker, representing the defendant, said he was struggling to cope with the domestic responsibilities and the impact of his marriage breakdown on his family.

Consequently, he had turned to alcohol and cocaine as a coping mechanism.

The 31-year-old admitted

possessing heroin, crack cocaine, and cocaine with intent to supply.

In total, the drugs were worth £26,352 and because they were discovered with dealer lists, scales, gloves and cash, Judge Robin Mairs confirmed there had to be a jail term despite the strain on Aswat-Bahadur’s personal life.

He said: “That quantity of drugs speak for themselves as to the circumstances of what was going on.”

The judge said it was clear that the defendant came from a decent, law-abiding family and that he had read the doctor’s letter about his late father’s condition, but there had to be some sort of repercussion.

Commons tribute to Jo Cox police BATLEY: The police officers who apprehended MP Jo Cox’s murderer have been honoured again – in Parliament.

PCs Jonathan Wright and Craig Nicholls were guests in the gallery of the Commons chamber, where MPs were discussing plans to commemorate the World War One battle of Passchendale.

Commons Deputy Speaker Eleanor Laing said: “We’d like to welcome them and commend them for their bravery. It is fitting that we should do so as we are about to have a debate commemorating those who gave their lives for freedom and democracy.”

The two officers have already been given police bravery awards for tackling Thomas Mair unarmed and this year were named in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List.

Jonathan and Jo and son Oliver... he was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes when he was six years old

By Zoe Shackleton A FAMILY are travelling to India to help provide support for those living in poverty who suffer from Type 1 diabetes.

Jo Fox and Jonathan Cass and their 10-year-old son Oliver, who live in Hanging Heaton, will be setting off to Nagpur tomorrow (Saturday) after becoming involved with the Pendsey Trust when Oliver was diagnosed with the condition at the age of six.

Type 1 diabetes means that a person’s pancreas does not produce any insulin and cannot regulate the body’s blood sugar (glucose) level.

Miss Fox, 40, said: “As we live in a country with an NHS free at the point of use, we do not have to worry about the costs of the medical equipment needed, so I began to wonder what happens in developing countries where people may struggle to access insulin.”

The Pendsey Trust is a small charity set up to raise money and awareness to help people in devel-

oping countries afford the medication to combat Type 1.

Miss Fox and her son became involved with the Trust and started to sponsor a girl called Ruchita, who is a similar age to Oliver and lives in Chandrapur, India.

Ruchita’s family were struggling to pay for her medical care, which was costing up to 70 per cent of their household income, and she had to drop out of school at the age of nine after her diagnosis.

Thanks to Miss Fox’s family sponsoring her, Ruchita is now supplied with essential items she needs to manage her condition and receives all her medical care at a clinic in Nagpur.

Miss Fox added: “The financial burden is now gone for Ruchita’s family and the others like her who have received sponsorship from families in the UK. “Just £200 a year covers her medical bills. Other children are still on the waiting list for a sponsor family, with around two new children a week being diagnosed and also needing help.

Town centre blitz

“The charity aims to address breaking the cycle of poverty by providing educational scholarships and business start-up grants, which enable young people to remain in school, get educated and get a job or become small business owners.

“This then means they have the funds to be self sufficient with their medical costs and are no longer a burden on their families.”

Oliver and his parents have self-funded the trip to India, where they will be visiting the Nagpur clinic. They will also be

touring the country to meet around 20 children whom the Trust has supported or who are in need of support.

Oliver, who goes to Hanging Heaton J&I School, is planning to give a motivational speech to children at the clinic about how not to let diabetes get in the way of life, and Miss Fox will be giving a talk to the parents.

DEWSBURY: Police will conduct a four-day operation to tackle child sex exploitation, antisocial behaviour and road traffic offences in the town.

From Tuesday (July 25) to Friday, there will be high-visibility patrols in partnership with agencies such as social services and Barnardo’s, plus workers in youth engagement, sexual health and alcohol abuse and mental health nurses.

Road death appeal OSSETT: A woman in her 30s has died in hospital after being hit by a car in Healey Road on Friday at around 9.50pm.

The 45-year-old driver of a grey Audi A5 was arrested on suspicion of driving while over the prescribed drink-drive limit and causing death by dangerous driving.

GP surgery recovers from special measures verdict A DEWSBURY GP surgery has been rated ‘good’ by inspectors following a remarkable turnaround.

Windsor Medical Centre was placed in special measures by the Care Quality Commission in January last year.

The practice, on William Street, Eastborough, was run

by Dr Ajit Pratap Mehrotra, who has since died, and it has been taken on by Dr Mangipudi Jayashree.

The practice has implemented a series of changes called for by the CQC. Beverley Cole, CQC’s head of general practice, said: “At an inspection in January, 2016, we did not believe that Windsor Medical Centre was likely to resolve its challenges without being placed into special measures.

“The practice was previously rated as inadequate and the care being provided was ineffective and unsafe.

“Since this inspection, a new provider was awarded the contract to run this practice and we have seen significant improvements in the level of care being provided under this new registration.

“We now see a practice that has an open and transparent approach to safety and is delivering care in line with current evidence-based guidance.

“The improvements the provider has made are impressive, and now they must prove that they are able to sustain them.

“We have, however, told the provider that they must continue to make improvements to make sure patients are

safe.” To make improvements, the provider was told that they need to check expiry dates of medicines and consumables within the practice and to review their policies and procedures so that eligible patients are being encouraged to attend for screening.

Apart from these small changes, inspectors found that the practice had made significant progress and that staff had the clinical skills, knowledge and experience to deliver effective care and treatment, with all staff being up to date with mandatory training.

Patients also commented on how they were treated with compassion, dignity and respect and they were involved in their care and decisions about their treatment.

Charity showcase

A car burst into flames after a collision on Huddersfield Road, Dewsbury. Police and firefighters were called to the scene in the Scout Hill area just before midnight on Sunday.

There was then more opprobrium heaped upon Brexit Secretary David Davis’s shoulders when PR photos of the UK and EU negotiating teams in Brussels showed Michel Barnier and his staff with files and papers at the ready, while Davis and team had one small notepad between them.

Good grief. Davis didn’t need a dossier in order to be able to shake hands with Barnier and smile for the cameras before heading home and leaving the professionals to it. Will someone rein the dogs in, please?

I expect those piles of EU paper were details of the bribes and backhanders they expect the UK to keep funding once we’re gone, because that’s the big issue here.

Did you know that only Germany – and to a lesser extent Holland – are net contributors to the EU budget besides us?

Yes really. France, Spain, Italy, Belgium, Portugal and the rest – all having it large on our hard-earned.

I wonder if the Remoaners understand that we fund corruption across the continent on a breath-taking scale?

That’s besides the millions and billions that aren’t quite fraud, but which for example ‘legitimately’ subsidise plush golf clubs to serve Brussels’ vast army of highly-paid bureaucrats and lawyers.

That’s nice if you’re a beneficiary, but not necessarily bent. But that is, at its root, what the EU project is about.

And so, while people here bleat on about caps on public sector wages, here’s a quick reminder that a huge part of

that £100bn divorce bill is to fund the sky-high pensions of Eurocrats. You Remoaners all happy with that too?

UT back to Monsieur Barnier and his £100bn Christmas wish. What Boris Johnson did, and David Davis eventually will do, is inform this excitable child that while Santa might be able to run to a nice little bicycle complete with stabilisers, he will not be knocking a hole in the roof to get a souped-up Harley Davidson down the chimney.

The UK Brexit team will be doing exactly what Corbyn, McDonnell – and anyone else – would have to do in the selfsame situation.

In a reasonable world the two sides would quickly agree mutual residency for UK/EU ex-pats, sign a tailored trade deal like Norway or Switzerland, and get on with it. And yes, there will be a bill of sorts to pay.

But Barnier’s current intransigence is nothing about a fair deal – it is entirely about trying to pressurise May’s weakened government and scupper Brexit.

David Davis is a wily campaigner and the sooner he calls this show pony’s bluff the better, because I suspect it will need German, French, Spanish and Italian captains of industry to wake up to just how catastrophically worse off they will be with no trade deal and just World Trade Organisation tariffs in place.

Then their stroppy placemen like Barnier and JeanClaude Juncker might finally be brought to heel.

If they’re not, then expect Davis to talk away because no deal really, really is better than a bad deal.

Time for BBC to join the real world HE Today programme on Radio 4 (7-9am) used to be the benchmark in broadcast journalism – informed, incisive, reasoned, educational. I have to dip in and out now, because if John Humphrys is on I find myself speeding on the way to work and screaming abuse at half-asleep drivers sitting in the outside lane of the A64 and M1.

Humphrys gets the thick end of £650,000 PA for hawking on at a variety of public figures like a fishwife with raging PMT, three days a week.

He doesn’t do ‘journalism’, he’s a pantomime provocateur.

But at least he’s not Chris Evans (£2.2m) who used to be chippily entertaining on telly, but has now disappeared so far up his own fundament that all the listeners get is the stink of the ginger-top’s last meal.

I have a choice. I don’t have to listen to them.

But I have no choice other than to pay their outrageous wages.

I’m not sure when the BBC lost its way but now, a few excellent dramas and sports coverage apart, it is divided pretty equally into programming for sofa slobs, or hammering home

Plaques honour computer pair

A MATHEMATICIAN and a computer scientist from Dewsbury were honoured with the unveiling of blue heritage plaques at the town's railway station.

Leslie Fox and Tom Kilburn, who both attended Wheelwright Grammar School, were remembered for their contribution to the world of mathematics and computer science when the commemorative plaques were unveiled at Dewsbury station on Tuesday.

Both men were influential in the computer revolution of 70 years ago and produced pioneering work in their fields.

Mr Kilburn, who died in 2001 aged 79, is believed to have started writing the world's first computer software program at the West Riding Refreshments Room next to the station in 1948.

He is renowned for co-inventing the world’s first modern digital computer, writing the program in June 1948 while travelling from Dewsbury station to Manchester University.

Mr Fox, who died in 1992 aged 73, had founded Oxford University's first computing laboratory by 1957 and later became the university's first professor of numerical analysis.

Michael Heylings, who also attended Wheelwright Grammar and helped apply for the blue plaques, welcomed Mr Fox’s widow, Clemency Fox, to unveil the tributes alongside Mr Kilburn’s son, John (both pictured above). A crowd of around 50 people, many of them Wheelwright Grammar School old boys, gathered to watch.

Letter of the Week: Joanna Ives, Thornhill Inquiry into a shocking cover-up From: John Appleyard, Liversedge After 20 years of campaigning for a public inquiry into contaminated blood, an independent inquiry has finally opened under Lord Archer to look at the scandal of thousands of people receiving HIV-contaminated blood in the 1980s.

This country has always prided itself on members of the public giving their blood for free, so why did the British government ignore warnings by the World Health Organisation not to import blood products from the United States, and carried on doing so?

The US pays its prisoners to give blood, yet studies show that prisoners were in the highest-risk groups of people living with HIV and hepatitis C. Haemophiliacs were being used as lab rats. The government was aware this was happening but chose to cover it up.

Lives have been destroyed and that of families by a government who put commercial interests before health.

A lot to learn...

neighbour and I decided to have a clean-up on our estate.

Even after the age of 18, because all education is free until the age of 19, the job centres go out of their way to try and get the kids to stay in education for another year to keep them off the dole queue, and keep their statistics down.

Medical science has come on a long way, and can achieve outcomes today that would be considered miraclous only a few decades ago. In 2011 the average life expectancy in the UK was 81, 71 in 1961 and 53 in 1911.

We must all be grateful that we do not face the spectre of death that was common in not many generations ago from everyday diseases and conditions.

However, as the two cases stated above demonstrate, it clear that advances in medical science have moved quicker than medical ethics.

Given that people with very life-limiting conditions can now be kept alive like never before, it leaves open questions regarding what is a quality of life, what is human dignity, and should all life be preserved regardless of what condition that life is lived in?

I don’t know the answers, but as a society we need to have that discussion. Parliament and the law are

behind the curve in my view, and both need to ensure that the ethics that binds our healthcare system together are relevent in the modern world and to modern technology.

Shake up Whitehall – many departments exist only to make politically correct statements.

Axe the Equality and Human Rights Commission – enough said! It remains a gold mine for lawyers, and a drain on Legal Aid. Boundary Reform – get a level playing field on anti-Tory bias, and postal voting fraud.

If this had been done, the UK wouldn’t be burdened with a government of no majority: another of Nick Clegg’s faults.

Reform the bloated, biased BBC – they are making public the salaries of its highest earners this week. You will be shocked!

Curb immigration – last but not least! Immigration has shot up since we were promised by Theresa May a figure of ‘tens of thousands’ a year.

From: Steve Oliver, Heckmondwike Now that the school summer holiday is starting, I wonder if Kirklees Highway Safety (KHS) will give urgent attention to some issues of safety around Heckmondwike Junior school on Cawley Lane near the junction with High Street?

The zig-zag lines at the school are there to prevent vehicles stopping during drop-off and pick-up times in the morning and afternoon.

However, from about 11.30am cars arrive and occupy over 60 metres of school kerb to pick up and drop off the children. So much for the zig-zag ‘safety’ zone at dinner-time, eh?

Question to KHS – will you extend the zone-times to apply all day (I had a near-miss with a child, and parent, one lunchtime)? If not, why not?

Still on the subject of yellow paint, I have another question. What have Princes Street, Birkhead Street and Cambridge Street all got that Cawley Lane hasn’t?

The answer is double-yellow lines around their kerb corners! It really is quite crazy that busy Cawley Lane has no double-lines next to High Street.

This attracts cars and vans that park below the pelican crossing right down to the corner and then (left) up to the school zig-zag lines.

Question to KHS - what is it that prevents the introduction of ‘no parking’ below the crossing which also has a shortened zig-zag, which is also a puzzling safety matter? Again, if not, why not ?

The central road markings on High Street are nice and wide all the way down from Batley Road, but they evaporate at Cawley Lane and then continue down to the grammar school.

These wide cross-hatchings contain many right-turn markings for traffic into some less-busy streets and even the grammar school.

Question to KHS - why can’t these wide markings continue past Cawley and include a right-turn arrow for uphill traffic turning into Cawley?

Basically, all the problems here are due to parked vehicles, which should be prevented from doing so by some logical, common-sense road/kerb markings that have been needed here at this neglected junction for many years, as local residents and drivers are fully aware of.

You would think this woman would have compassion and empathy growing up as a vicar’s daughter – it clearly made her cold and uncaring and a perfect fit to be a Tory.

These people are utterly selfish and only care about themselves and their rich mates, not exactly a Christian attitude or approach to life in general.

How she can call herself a good practicing Christian, I do not know.

I can only assume people voted for the nasty party for Brexit, and the wish to stop the free movement of people to control immigration, and stop the mass influx of people which is creating a huge burden on our crumbling public services.

I am sure they didn’t vote for the spiralling poverty this party have pushed people into with their barbaric cuts and austerity drive.

Obviously, we must keep the foreign aid budget topped up whatever the cost to our society, as long as we look good to the rest of the world; who cares that people can’t get hospital/GP appointments?

The Tories will carry on closing down hospital services, after all, if some of us die due to lack of medical services there is more room for the immigrants.

Old people can’t get the care they need; what do the Tories do?

Absolutely nothing.

They are expecting pensioners, with health problems of their own, to look after elderly pensioner parents.

People who are working and have children to get off to school can’t be at an elderly relatives’ to shower, make their breakfast and ensure they take their medication before they go to work. It isn’t possible.

You can’t leave young children to be latch-key kids whilst you go and look after the elderly; Social Services would be on you like a ton of bricks.

Irish Nash starts book club BATLEY: The Irish Democratic League Club, also known as the Batley Nash, are kick-starting their very own book club.

Club trustee Marie Colleran's idea of hosting a book club to bring together members and non-members was welcomed warmly by the committee.

Andrew Murphy, club secretary, said: "It is about people coming together to use our fantastic facilities and discuss over a drink the book they've recently all read."

The first meeting is scheduled for next Thursday, July 27, at 8pm where the rules of the book club will be established alongside the frequency of the meetings and more.

THE NEW-LOOK Howlands community centre in Dewsbury has been revealed after a £500,000 revamp.

More than 120 people attended an event last Friday (July 14) as the centre on School Street re-opened its doors.

The centre, run by Dewsbury and District League of Friendship, is a charity set up to provide care and support for adults living with disabilities through arts and crafts, and meeting and socialising with others.

Howlands secured a £500,000 Big Lottery Grant last year to give the building a complete renovation in a bid to make it a better place for the community, and work began back in April this year.

Tom Ellis, chairman of Howlands, said: “I have heard of the regeneration in other parts of Dewsbury, but I believe that the real regeneration is happening in Howlands.

“All the hard work for the grant has

been done by the local people of Dewsbury. They aren't ordinary people, they are very special people who have overcome their own handicaps and difficulties to find the funds to make the refurbishment a success.”

Dewsbury MP Paula Sherriff attended, alongside Deputy Mayor Coun Gwen Lowe. Ms Sherriff later tweeted: “Such a transformation at the Howlands Centre! Thanks for inviting me to the reopening.”

With more than 70 members and 30 volunteers, Mr Ellis and manager Deborah Hall hope the refurbishment will boost their numbers and make the centre a focal point for the community in Dewsbury.

Mr Ellis said: “We hope it will attract more people. It's a very attractive building and we've got some really nice rooms to hire out to people and local community groups and professional organisations.”

‘Inspirational’ care home wins award

Crowds flock to festival

HECKMONDWIKE: A care home has received a national award for its outstanding care.

Avery Mews, on Railway Street, was named Best Residential Care Provider 2017 in the Health Investor Awards for its variety of activity programmes and its ‘Wishing Well’ scheme that helps to fulfil the wishes of individual residents.

The care home is run by operator Brighterkind and was commended for its leadership and team culture, with judges describing it as “inspirational”.

Crash driver freed CLECKHEATON: A motorist was trapped in his car after smashing into two walls.

Police, ambulance and fire engines were called to the scene on Spen Lane at its junction with Gomersal Lane shortly before 6pm on Monday evening.

Firefighters and paramedics helped the injured man out of his vehicle before he was taken to hospital.

Spen Lane was partially closed as emergency services dealt with the incident.

Assault denial DEWSBURY: A man has denied assaulting his pregnant partner.

Christopher Wakefield is accused of punching his partner in the stomach at her home in Smallwood Gardens, Shaw Cross, on May 6.

Police were called to the house after neighbours allegedly heard shouting.

Wakefield, who is from Bramley, Leeds, was given bail but must not contact his partner or go to her home while he waits for his trial at Kirklees Magistrates’ Court in October.

By Zoe Shackleton HUNDREDS of people flocked to Mirfield for this year’s Arts Festival as it took over venues across the town.

There was an array of colourful costumes in keeping with the ‘Mirfield Takes Flight’ theme at the end-of-festival carnival parade, and visitors were able to enjoy a host of arty activities all weekend, alongside the unmissable Star Trek event.

The festival took off with a screening of the First Contact film on Friday, which set the tone for two full days of sci-fi activities for Trekkies.

Fans enjoyed a mock-up of the bridge of the Starship Enterprise and

a display of original Star Trek costumes. They were also able to re-create their favourite movie spaceships with the Birstall Woodturners Club.

Canadian artist Emei Ma showcased her series of works on the Star Trek universe.

Meanwhile, live music and perform-

ances from the likes of Musica Mirfield and The Famous Ski Band entertained the crowds.

There were Skyfall flying sessions at Mirfield Library, and Japanese Aikido demonstrations at Mirfield Martial Arts Club.

Author Deborah Andrews was also at the library to read from her debut novel, Walking the Lights, while artists Lisa Stubbs and Gillian Tyler demonstrated the art of children’s illustration at their event, which included print-making sessions.

Organiser Jenny Tomlinson-Walsh said: “It was an excellent, fun weekend, well-attended and enjoyed by many – the result of the hard work of the many organisations involved in the festival.”

Drunk doused in pepper spray A DRUNK who tried to fight off ambulance staff was doused with pepper spray as police tried to bring him under control.

Lee Ellis, 33, of Princess Gardens, Dewsbury, was lying unconscious in a car park off Union Street on May 22 when paramedics rushed to his aid. But he became aggressive and Kirklees Magistrates’ Court was told that he picked up a defibrillator and threw it at the paramedics.

Police were called and when they tried to speak to Ellis he made punching motions towards them and they were forced to use the spray.

The offence put Ellis in breach of a two-year conditional discharge he was given following an incident earlier this year, when he had to be restrained from spitting at police.

He was given a community order with 15 days of rehabilitation activities and ordered to pay £85 costs and £85 victim surcharge.

News In Brief Family history talk BATLEY: Retired policeman Chris Helme, who was awarded the British Empire Medal in 1990 for services to his community, will give a talk on family history to Batley History Group’s annual meeting at the Town Hall on Monday (July 24, 7.30).

Pool of blood riddle DEWSBURY: Police are investigating after the discovery of a large pool of blood on Green Lane, Westborough at around 9.30am on Sunday.

But there are no clues about where the blood on the pavement and on a car came from.

Inspector Graham Hawcroft from West Yorkshire Police said: “We have no injured person at the moment but it looks like something may have happened during the night.

“We are doing house-to-house inquiries in the area to see if anyone knows what has happened.”

Dora:Dunkirk heroine

Store opens a month Mirfield seafarer and her ‘little ship’ braved beach carnage early

By Mike Popplewell THE huge promotion of the new film ‘Dunkirk’, on general release today (Friday), has brought to mind a Mirfield family who have a very important connection to that event.

Dora Walker, who was brought up at Knowle House, manned one of the legendary ‘little ships’ that sailed across the English Channel in 1940 to rescue British and French troops stranded on the beach at Dunkirk, surrounded and attacked by German forces.

So, who is Dora and who are her family?

Holme Bank Mills in Mirfield is owned by James Walker and Sons Ltd, and though originally established as blanket and rug manufacturers in the 19th century, the company has diversified and the Holme Bank Mills site is now a business park with James Walker, great-great-grandson of the company founder, the man in charge.

It was James’ great-great-uncle, John Ely Walker, Dora’s father, who first branched out from the blanket business.

He was born in Batley in 1847, educated privately and became a senior partner in the family business.

He was chairman of the Mirfield Liberal Club Buildings, a director of the Staincliffe Mill Company, JP for the county from 1894 and a governor of Mirfield Grammar School.

Dora was born in Mirfield in 1890.

She was the 10th child of John Ely and his wife Mary. Her big sister Kathleen grew up to become secretary

But while her siblings flourished, Dora seemed unimpressed by personal ambition.

After developing bronchial problems, she moved to Whitby, where she was expected to benefit from the sea air.

And she did.

Her siblings all settled into typical middle class lives in the district, but Dora was different.

She had been educated at the elite girls’ school, Roedean, she nursed in France during World War One, but eventually found her purpose in life in the world of seafaring.

She took to fishing and running her own boat, becoming the only female skipper in the North Sea fishing fleet.

When war broke out in 1939 she was just short of her 50th birthday but she became more active in the war effort than many men of similar age.

Firstly she became a pilot, steering boats through minefields, then in 1940 she responded to the call for civililan ships to sail to France and help evacuate the troops from the beaches at Dunkirk.

As the new film clearly shows, this was no pleasure jaunt. Not a jolly sailing trip by any imagination – it was a matter of life and death for both the troops and the rescuers.

Well, Dora survived and lived on until she died peacefully in a care home in 1980 – but not before she had established and become curator of the fishing section of the Whitby Museum and, having left Mirfield far behind her, had immersed herself in Whitby life.

LIDL’s new multi-million pound supermarket in Mirfield will open next month – a month sooner than planned.

The new premises on Station Road, which are replacing the current store on the opposite side of the road, will open on Thursday, August 10, with special offers and VIP visitors.

At 30,000 sq ft, the store is double the size of the current outlet and will feature an in-store bakery, longer-style tills, customer toilets, a glass-fronted facade and a 148-space car park.

The site of the present store has been acquired by Mirfield-based Darren Smith Homes and will be demolished and re-developed for housing.

Kirklees councillors gave the go-ahead for the new store in May last year and construction started in November, with an original expected opening date of September.

Man facing jail after attacking his partner

By Steve Martyn A DEWSBURY man could face jail after attacking his partner and flicking a cigarette at her.

Istavan Bogdan, 41, of Halifax Road, denied assault but was convicted when he failed to show up at Kirklees Magistrates’ Court.

The court heard he assaulted his partner on December 20 last year at their previous home on Cross Mount Street, Batley.

Bogdan threatened: “I will f*** into your head, you fat whore.” He then hit her round the cheek with an open palm and flicked a cigarette at her.

Police were called after a distressed 999 call from a 10year-old girl who had witnessed the assault.

Magistrates also heard that the couple’s children had been taken into care because of a history of abuse.

Vanessa Jones, prosecuting, said: “It was quite upsetting for her as she urinated because she was so scared.

“The relationship wasn’t very good because he didn’t want her to have a relationship with her friends and relatives.

“She describes some controlling behaviour as he came to her place of work, causing a scene there because he was angry.

“The biggest impact is that as a result of the domestic violence, their children were taken into care.”

Bogdan’s partner confirmed that their relationship was over and asked for the court to hand him a restraining order so that he cannot contact her, as she wants to rebuild relationships with her children, family and friends.

Bogdan pleaded guilty to criminal damage to her mobile phone when she tried to call police and to some walls, but denied assault.

Sentencing was adjourned because District Judge Michael Fanning said that Bogdan needed help from probation staff.

RAVENSTHORPE residents are celebrating a minor victory after solving a problem that has afflicted them for months.

Irritated occupants on Garden Terrace, Ravensthorpe, had complained repeatedly to Kirklees Council as privet hedges facing their homes were overgrown and were causing damage to cars that attempted to drive down the narrow road.

Mr Fisher, who lives on Garden Terrace with his wife, said: “We have rung the council on various occasions and

ACTOR Michael Gambon is to star alongside Murder She Wrote’s Angela Lansbury’s in the BBC’s new adaptation of the much-loved novel Little Women. Angela reveals: “I was so excited to receive the offer, and I knew it was the right choice. I think the drama will be a huge success as great writing never goes out of style.”

BRITAIN’S best-known luvvie, Stephen Fry was stunned when his muchhyped US sitcom The Great Indoors was axed after only one series. He admits: “It came as a shock to me honestly, as I loved the cast and doing the show, but one can’t rely on these things and you have to move forward and look to the next challenge.”

DEBBIE RUSH is leaving Coronation Street and the role of Anna Windass at the end of the year, ITV has confirmed. It will bring to a close her nine-year career as the Street’s long-suffering cleaner. Debbie tells me she wants new challenges, and denies she was unhappy on the show.

EASTENDERS has fallen to its lowest ever ratings. The BBC soap attracted just 3.4 million viewers recently, 600,000 less than its previous historic low. A source who is based out at Elstree, where the show is made, tells me: “Everyone is worried as the show has been in decline for years now, and all wonder who will face the axe in a bid to cut costs.”

STRICTLY’S Craig Revel Horwood says new head judge Shirley Ballas is the perfect choice. He tells me: “Shirley’s a fantastic replacement for Len Goodman. I’ve met up with her and she’s a laugh and a bundle of fun, I think she will really mix it up and people will love her from the off. But don’t expect her also to be that soft with the stars...”

The bar equipment for the 2017 festival is now a combination of the organisers’ own kit and that of both the Heavy Woollen and Barnsley CAMRA organisations and ably assisted by Tim Wood, the landlord of the Old Colonial in Mirfield, whose experience and skill is always welcome.

The Community Centre in Roberttown is ideally placed to hold the festival, and drinkers from further afield are able to use the excellent public transport links.

The 229 service (Leeds-Huddersfield) has a stop immediately outside the centre, and the village can also be reached by the 220 and 253 services, full details of which can be found at www.wymetro.com.

Tickets on sale now TICKETS are selling fast for Batley & Spen Youth Theatre Company’s inaugural performance of Les Miserables at the Oxfam Wastesaver site on Grange Road, so grab yours now to avoid disappointment.

Tickets start at £8, with a £2.50 transaction fee per booking for all phone and internet sales.

Performances start on Wednesday August 9 at 7.30pm and continue at the same time until Saturday August 12, when there will be a showing of a ‘More In Common’ play devised by the group at 2.30pm, as well as the evening performance.

Producers of the show are also looking for as much help as possible and are looking for licensed chaperones, people who can sew, people with access to a minibus or van who can either drive it or lend it, a scaffolding company, and clothing manufacturers, wholesalers or retailers.

Grassington plan DEWSBURY & District Ramblers set off on a 7.5-mile walk on Saturday, July 14 where they made their way from St Aidan’s RSPB reserve in Swillington along scenic routes, where they saw a variety of different birds and wonderful views.

A walk is planned for this Sunday, July 23, in the Grassington area. Ramblers are asked to meet David Lodge at 9am in the Wellington Road car park, Dewsbury.

Circus comes to Bagshaw Museum ALL THE fun of the circus is coming to Bagshaw Museum in Batley this summer.

A weekly Circus School will be running throughout August.

Youngsters will be able to make circus equipment such as juggling balls, hula hoops and balance boards and learn how to use them.

There will also be crafts and lessons in how to put on a clown face.

The Circus School will be on Tuesdays August 1, 8, 15 and 22, 11am-1pm and 2pm-4pm.

The cost is £2 per child per session and all ages are welcome. There is no need to book.

Youngsters who attend every week will graduate with a certificate and a prize.

Savage and bewitching LOVERS of theatre and dance are in for a treat with a bewitching show set in the walled garden of Oakwell Hall tha premiered last night (Thurs).

Oakwell on a summer’s night is the perfect location for the outdoor performance of Savage Hart, which combines aerial artistry, ballet and circus.

Pack a picnic and join the outdoor audience in Birstall tonight (Fri) and Saturday as the performers reveal the tale of a 19th century aristocrat, haunted by the ghosts of his past.

Citrus Arts’ artistic director James Doyle-Roberts said: “It is a really, really, beautiful show and we promise that the audience will be taken on quite a journey.

“There will be live music too and we feel it will be quite a magical experience with fire illumination and live music.”

Last night was the premiere of the outdoor version Citrus Arts’ sell-out 2016 show.

Savage Hart reveals the story of a family of deer who have watched over the dining hall of a cruel man of his times … now they’re putting their heads together to form a plan.

Savage Hart’s dress rehearsal at Oakwell Hall this week The production has been especially created for the walled garden at Oakwell Hall and co-produced with local arts organisation Creative Scene.

The performance is recommended for ages eight years and over.

CRICKET WITH MIKE POPPLEWELL

Crunch weekend ahead for Heaton HANGING HEATON CC face another big weekend of cricket, with Sunday’s trip to Greater Manchester to face Hyde in the last 16 of the Royal London ECB National Club Championship perhaps the most important game of the season.

They have had some close calls in the competition so far, and with Gary Fellows’ side progressing in the early rounds of every tournament they have entered this season, as well as challenging for the All Rounder Bradford Premier League Premier Division title, the pressure on the players is relentless.

Before the match at Hyde there is also a matter of a league encounter at home to New Farnley tomorrow.

In their last outing there was a shock defeat at lowly Lightcliffe when, chasing the modest 161 posted by the home side, they were shot out for just 93.

Opener Nick Connolly took his season’s run tally to 789 but managed only 12 in this game as one of only three players reaching double figures.

It wasn’t all doom and gloom last weekend, as the Bennett Lane men did win the group A T20 final with a seven-wicket win over Undercliffe on Sunday.

But, with the defeat at Lightcliffe costing them the league leadership to Farsley, they desperately need a win double this weekend.

At the other end of the table Cleckheaton urgently

need an injection of confidence as they face a relegation derby with Batley at Moorend.

In what is their most unprecedented slide in recent years, John Wood’s side find themselves second-bottom after being leapfrogged by Batley last weekend.

It took a century from skipper Wood to secure a narrow win at Mount Pleasant in the first meeting, and on current form it is going to take a special effort from someone to get them through this time.

Their last game, at Farsley was a catalogue of disasters.

Only opener Nick Lindley, with 44 from 81 balls, managed double figures and five men even

failed to trouble the scorers.

Thirteen extras was the next best contribution to a total of 75, and four of those were wides or no balls. It took just 10.1 overs for Farsley to knock them off without loss.

Batley, in contrast, are enjoying a mini revival and they go into the game on the back of a 10-run win over bottom club Pudsey Congs that lifted them out of the relegation places.

A patient 59 from Shabir Rashid was the top score in Batley’s 169 all out. I In reply the visitors pushed the home side all the way before Muhammed Hafeez took two late wickets to stop Congs in their tracks and finish with a 573 return.

Shock defeat for leaders Scholes at winless Birstall SCHOLES CC go into their Championship One match at second-bottom Bankfoot with their hopes of an early return to the Premier Division suddenly under threat after a shock home defeat by previously winless Birstall in their last outing.

Skipper James Stansfield will be desperately hoping there isn’t another banana skin lying in his path.

three with Scholes and Wrenthorpe level on 225 points and Methley just five behind them.

After posting a total of 235-6 there seemed to be few worries ahead for Scholes against Birstall at New Popplewell Lane, Akbar Badshah top-scoring with 85, but the visitors had other ideas.

Badshah’s day was to prove particularly disheartening as his fine batting display was somewhat negated by his bowling. His one over went for 15 runs – an over which arguably cost the match.

Bankfoot and 29 behind third-bottom Ossett, have a chance to improve their situation tomorrow when they take on Ossett at Leeds Road.

In their last game Ossett had an 80-run win over Yeadon after former Yorkshire, Leicestershire and Derbyshire batsman John Sadler hit 101 off 112 balls in a total of 297 for eight.

A win is vital for both sides tomorrow, in their battle to avoid

the drop, but for Birstall it would represent a lifeline.

Gomersal are still hovering in a mid-table spot and their 105-run defeat at Methley was a disappointment after Joe Duffy’s early threewicket burst had the home side struggling at 50 for three.

AMATEUR RUGBY LEAGUE

Sharks target victory across the Pennines SHAW CROSS SHARKS will be aiming to maintain their fantastic away form in the National Conference Division One with victory at Ince Rose Bridge tomorrow afternoon (2.30pm).

Despite having already played home and away against other teams in the division, tomorrow’s game is the first time these clubs will meet in 2017.

Last season was a difficult one for the Sharks, who won the away leg aganst Ince Rose Bridge to escape relegation on the last day.

Head coach Brett Turner is feeling confident ahead of the game but believes the Wigan club will prove difficult opponents on Saturday.

“We are looking forward to it, we

have enjoyed a lot of joy away from home this year,” said Turner.

“Ince Rose Bridge are normally a difficult side to play against, they like to mix it up a bit so it should be an exciting game.

“Everyone is feeling confident.

“We have never lacked confidence, we have just been lacking application.

“We have been winning a lot away from home but I don’t think that is down to anything spectacular.”

Shaw Cross currently sit one place outside the play-off places, with only points difference separating them and York Acorn who occupy the last play-off spot.

Turner believes that a top-six finish is achievable for Shaw Cross but

says his players must find a better level of consistency.

“A play-off place is definitely achievable,” added Turner.

“We have lacked confidence more than anything and if we can find that in our performance and team selection we will move up the table.

“If we had the consistency earlier in the year we would be a lot closer to the top.”

Sharks will be without captain Danny Flowers, who came off injured in the Sharks’ win over Hunslet Warriors two weeks ago.

Turner will be able to welcome back hooker Jamie Searby after an ankle injury and Matthew Tebb who missed the last two games due to a virus.

Joe Crossland then scored his second try of the game when he danced through the Thornhill defence leaving three would-be tacklers sprawled on the floor.

He also converted to take

his personal points tally to 16 and Normanton’s tally to 20.

In the run-up to half time the Trojans managed to pull a score back thanks to Darius McCarthy.

Thornhill pressed towards the line and worked the ball out to the winger, who dived over for a try in the corner.

Crossland added another penalty goal for Normanton soon after the break.

Andy Bates had the opportunity to reduce the deficit but he knocked-on a high kick inside Normanton’s in-goal area.

The Trojans continued to search for a way back into the game and were rewarded with another try.

Adam Allerton ran onto a pass to power over for what proved to be Thornhill’s last score of the game.

Crossland completed his hat-trick with a long-range try before Tom Alexander rounded off the scoring.

Thornhill’s afternoon was summed up when they mounted a late attack but knocked-on inches from the line as they looked to make the scores a little closer.

FOOTBALL Manner of Walton departure Albion kick off preangers Liversedge gaffer season with a win LIVERSEDGE manager Jonathan Rimmington was left fuming when prolific striker Joe Walton signed for neighbours Ossett Albion.

Walton had enjoyed two successful goal-scoring seasons at Sedge but has made the jump up the league pyramid to Albion, who play in the eighth tier of English football.

Rimmington only found out that Walton had left the club via social media and was unhappy with how the deal was conducted.

“I know all players are up for grabs at the minute but I thought Joe was staying with us as I had not been told otherwise,” said Rimmington.

“I count Joe as one of my friends, so when I heard that it

was on social media before I had even been informed, it’s fair to say I was not happy.

“Joe is a great lad and I think I have been more than fair in the circumstances.”

Despite the loss of Walton, Liversedge have said that there will be up to eight new arrivals at Clayborn that will be announced in due course.

Sedge’s first competitive fixture has also been scheduled for August 5 - a preliminary round FA Cup tie against NCEL Division One side Armthorpe Welfare.

Clayborn also saw its first preseason action last Tuesday evening as Liversedge eased to a 10-0 victory against Oakenshaw.

OSSETT ALBION won their first pre-season friendly with a thrilling 7-3 win away to Retford United.

Despite trailing 2-0 after 20 minutes, Albion rallied to win by a four-goal margin.

Jimmy Eyles scored four of the goals with Callum Charlton also getting his name on the scoresheet. Two own goals took Ossett’s tally to seven for the evening.

Albion then drew their most recent pre-season friendly away at Hemsworth Miners Welfare, with Ross Hardaker scoring Albion’s only goal.

Richard Tracey has also expressed his delight at signing striker Joe Walton from Liversedge.

“He’s a much sought-after player so I’m absolutely delighted to get Joe in,” said Tracey.

JAMES DELANEY got off to the perfect start as head coach of Dewsbury Moor with a convincing win over Barrow Island.

Moor started the strongest as they scored a try straight from the kick off.

Aiden Ineson fed the ball to Jamie Samme who burst through three defenders before drawing the full back and finding Jordan Foster, who went over underneath the posts.

Barrow hit back after a succession of penalties carried them up the field and after some sustained pressure on the line the visitors opened their account for the day through Jamie Curtis.

The away side then took the lead three minutes later thanks to Blain Marwood, who made the score 12-6 with 18 minutes played.

Moor then responded with three tries of their own to lead 20-12 at half time.

Max Vernon scored all three tries with a 20-minute hat-trick, Ineson only managed to land one conversion.

A try from debutant Steve McNamara on 50 minutes gave Moor breathing space, Ineson converted to give the hosts a 14point advantage.

Dominic Horn and Cameron Bruce also crossed to bring Moor’s points tally to 38.

Luke Thompson added a late consolation for Island.

Ineson picked up the man-ofthe-match award as he was involved in the majority of his side’s tries.

Delaney was pleased with the response from his players and has now set his sights on securing a place in the top six.

Saturday’s win puts Moor back into the division’s top six, one point ahead of Rylands Sharks who they host tomorrow afternoon (2.30pm).

Tough day for Celtic DEWSBURY CELTIC suffered their heaviest defeat of 2017 as three separate sin-binnings sent them on their way to a 52-point defeat against Oldham St Annes.

Celtic’s Anthony Dunford was sin-binned on nine minutes and Saints capitalised with a Matthew Bottom try and Matt Whitehead conversion.

Seb Jeffers was awarded opposition man of the match and also claimed the title of top tackler.

BATLEY BOYS raised an astonishing £779.09 for ‘Evan’s Fund’ during Batley Bulldogs win over Bradford Bulls.

The fund was set up in memory of Stanley Rangers player Evan Hawksworth who passed away from a head injury that was sustained in a game against Batley Boys.

Club members held a bucket collection during the game on Sunday to raise the funds.

Woodkirk Valley win Deborah Ingleson Memorial Cup HOME ADVANTAGE proved to be crucial for Woodkirk Valley Country Club (pictured right) as they won the Deborah Ingleson Memorial Cup. It was the third time the football tournament had been played.

Thirteen teams from as far afield as Teesside competed in the event, which was organised by Lee Ingleson, in memory of his sister who died from cancer aged 32.

Funds from the day went to Cancer Research.

Woodkirk Valley overcame Charlie’s Angel from Middlesbrough 3-0 in the final, with Valley’s Jonathan Smith taking the man-of-the-day award after keeping another clean sheet.

There were also prizes presented by former Leeds United legends Mel Sterland and Terry Yorath.

at Heywood Road DEWSBURY continued their seemingly irrevocable march towards safety by defeating Swinton by 22 clear points.

There was misfortune on the pitch for Swinton as injuries to Jack Murphy and Josh Woods meant that they finished the game one man down.

But that’s not to say that the Rams weren’t good for their two points. The craft of Gareth Moore and the steady head and kicking of veteran Paul Sykes kept the scoreboard steadily ticking over in Dewsbury’s favour.

After the tough and tight opening stages, a thumping tackle by Swinton’s Andy Bracek dispossessed Jack Teanby, culminating in Mike Butt finishing off in the corner. Chris Hankinson missed his first conversion attempt.

A debatable decision from referee Gareth Hewer, after the ball deflected forward from a Rams’ player, resulted in another set for the visitors, leading to Dom Speakman nipping over from dummy half.

Then Moore did marvellously well to re-collect his chip and chase to touch down and put the Rams further ahead.

A few minutes later Aaron Brown put some daylight between the teams, romping through from 70 metres out, shimmying around Murphy and touching down by the sticks, to give Sykes the chance to kick three from three.

Back came the Lions, with a player back from Wigan, Liam Forsyth, diving over at full stretch in the far corner.

Hankinson was again off-target.

The Rams lapped up the Lions’ indiscipline. Dewsbury tapped following a high tackle from Josh Barlow on Toby Everett and Sykes shot through a large gap in the cover and maintained his 100 per cent goalkicking record in the first half.

A smart Swinton short kick-off resulted in Rob Spicer colliding with a teammate and going into touch. The Lions took advantage with Butt teeing up Liam Paisley for a try with Hankinson booting his first points of the day.

A couple more penalties for interference sent the Rams galloping down the pitch to the Swinton line, where Sykes supplied the perfect pass for Brown to zoom over.

There was then a fine retort from the Lions. Rhodri Lloyd’s power gained yards before his awareness located Ben White, who managed to twist over and score.

This meant that Swinton were still in it, with ten points the gap and half an hour to play.

The Lions then had several chances as Callum Field went close, Shaun Robinson threw a wildly forward pass after breaking through and Woods knocked on in a prime position.

Then Moore raced through a huge gap at the other end to score.

Even when the injury to Woods reduced the Lions to 12 fit players, they

fought gamely on.

Robinson and Hankinson earned a dropout by forcing back Dale Morton but their efforts amounted to nothing.

at the Fox’s Biscuits Stadium BATLEY BULLDOGS had to come from behind to grind out a narrow win against Bradford Bulls and keep their West Yorkshire neighbours on zero points at the foot of the table.

Despite taking the lead twice, the visitors ran out of steam as they hit the buffers around the hour mark.

The first try of the afternoon came in unexpected circumstances when Bradford’s Joe Keyes pounced on a mistake to score with a breakaway try after only six minutes.

Just as Batley were probing down the Bulls’ left flank, Sam Smeaton’s knock on allowed Keyes to gather and hare 80 metres downfield. Oscar Thomas could not add the extra points with the conversion.

It took Batley until nearly the midpoint of the first half to respond and they were gifted territory when fullback Thomas was easily bundled in to touch on the 20-metre mark.

From the resultant scrum, the hosts sent James Bretherton crashing over from close range. Patch Walker smacked the upright with his conversion attempt and the sides stayed locked at 4-4.

Chances regularly went begging for both sides as possession was conceded cheaply with the ball going to ground on many occasions.

For all their territory – and forcing Batley in to two goal-line drop outs – Bradford were thwarted. Their best chances revolved around Cory Aston who linked up with Keyes, but Thomas took his eye off the ball.

short of Aston who witnessed another chance go begging.

Dave Scott – who was imperious throughout – proved to be Batley’s biggest attacking threat. When he was illegally stripped, the ball was shipped

wide but Smeaton duly stuck to the script and knocked on, encapsulating a dour half.

The second period started in similar fashion to the first with the Bulls taking the lead in unorthodox circumstances through James Bentley, who notched his 15th try of the season.

His speculative high kick was allowed to bounce and, just when it appeared to be going over the dead ball line, Johnny Campbell flung himself head first to knock the ball back in to play and Bentley was on hand to dab down. Thomas wasn’t so profligate on this occasion and coolly slotted over his conversion.

Two Batley tries close to the hour mark turned the game on its head with Walker scoring the first and setting up the second for a grateful Scott.

Walker, who converted both with the boot, ghosted over in the 55th minute to draw the game level, after Bradford were ruthlessly punished for their indiscipline.

He then turned provider when, after good build-up play by Joel Farrell, he flicked the ball the way of Scott who rounded a static defender.

The Bulls were competitive throughout and scored a slick team try to give themselves a fighting chance. Having drawn the Batley defence into the centre of the park, the ball was flung the way of Campbell, who accelerated down the left wing and squared for Iliess Macani to draw level.

Hopes of getting into positive points for the season were short lived though when Scott bagged the winner with only seven minutes remaining, having been ably assisted by Shaun Ainscough.

There was still time for Dom Brambani to put the game beyond doubt as his drop goal on the hooter ricocheted over via the upright.

Dewsbury swimmer selected for Team GB DEWSBURY swimmer Charlotte Robinson has been chosen to represent Team GB at the European Olympic Youth Festival in Gyor, Hungary.

Charlotte is the youngest athlete selected for Team GB and will compete in the 100m and 200m Butterfly events next week.

At 13 years old Charlotte was the youngest finalist to compete at the British Championship Trials in April.

She finished sixth in the Women’s Youth 200m Butterfly event to secure her place on the GB team travelling to the games next week.

She also became Great Britain’s fourth fastest 13-year-old ever in the 200m Butterfly at the British National Championships in 2016.

Charlotte lives in Dewsbury and attends St John Fishers Catholic Voluntary Academy and trains with

the City of Leeds Swimming Club.

She currently holds the North East Regional title for the 50, 100 and 200m Butterfly as well as the 100m Breaststroke.

The 200m Butterfly heats and semi-finals will take place on Monday, July 24 with the final being held later in the week.

She will also compete in the 100m Butterfly on Thursday, July 27.

The festival will see approximately 3,000 athletes from 50 European nations come together and compete across 10 Olympic sports from July 23-29.

Charlotte is one of 16 athletes aged 14-17 that will compete in the swimming competitions for GB. Olympic gold medalist Rebecca Adlington got her first taste of an Olympic-style event at the EYOF before winning two gold medals at

senior Olympic level.

Charlotte will certainly take inspiration from the likes of Adlington as she has an eye on the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo.

Charlotte’s mother, Kath Robinson, was shocked by her daughter’s call-up to the national team but was overcome with joy after she was selected.

“Charlotte has been swimming competitively since she was nine and only began swimming lessons when she was six,” said Mrs Robinson.

“We took her to swimming lessons at Dewsbury Sports Centre but we never expected her to get this far.

“I am so proud, it is unbelievable, I am shocked and surprised but really really happy for her to be selected and to be the youngest athlete on the whole of Team GB.”

Kelly - Rams are a different animal

DEWSBURY RAMS head coach Neil Kelly believes his team I now a “different animal” to the one he inherited back in April as they prepare to host Sheffield Eagles on Sunday.

Sheffield beat Dewsbury 48-12 in what was only the new boss’s second game back in charge at the club, but Kelly says things are now a lot different.

Since that defeat the Rams have moved themselves out of the relegation places and into eighth, only one place behind the Eagles who occupy seventh.

And Kelly is confident ahead of Sunday’s clash after his side saw off relegation rivals Swinton Lions last weekend.

“We are a different animal now, I am very pleased with where we are and what we have achieved up to now,” said Kelly.

“Sheffield defeated us quite comfortably when we played them earlier in the season so we certainly owe them a game.

“It will be a totally different game, we are a better side than we were then and I don’t think they are as good a side as they were then.

“We have been controlling the ball better and on the whole we have been defending better, we need to keep doing those things to get a win on Sunday.”

The Rams put some daylight between themselves and the bottom two with their win over Swinton on Sunday.

The victory was Dewsbury’s fourth from their last five games and Kelly was full of praise for his players after another crucial victory.

“Swinton are a better side than the league suggests and they weren’t a pushover by any stretch of the imagination.

“Once we killed Swinton’s enthusiasm I thought we were good value for the win.”

Dewsbury have added to their squad with the signing of French international Mickael Goudemand.

Goudemand is a Coupe de France winner and featured for France in their friendly with England last October.

Kelly believes that the forward is a

perfect addition to the squad as they aim to push themselves further from the drop.

“It is a good time to bring Mickael in, he is a French international who can play second row, loose forward and possibly at stand-off,” added Kelly. “Going into the play-offs it is nice to have someone who is a bit of a utility player.

“We have also signed Tom Harrison who plays on the wing and we have signed Tom Ashton who has played at Sheffield and Oldham.”

A win on Sunday would secure eighth place for the Rams, which gives them the added bonus of having four home games out of the seven Super 8 fixtures.

Things starting to click for Bulldogs BATLEY boss Matt Diskin believes that things are finally “starting to click” for his team as they aim to end their regular season on a high with victory against London Broncos on Sunday.

The Bulldogs won their second consecutive game against Diskin’s former club Bradford last Sunday, which was their fifth win from the last six, and Diskin feels that his team are showing that they just needed time to adjust to changes.

“We have grown in confidence and when you play with confidence everything seems to fall into place,” said Diskin.

“We have had plenty of changes this year and it has taken a while for players to adjust to it.

“Things are now starting to click slowly but surely and we will get better as time goes on.”

Diskin’s men were beaten 42-4 at Mount Pleasant when London visited over the Easter period.

With the Shield competition right around the corner, Diskin is planning on fielding a side with several fringe players, giving them a chance to stake their claim ahead of the ‘8s’.

“I am going to give people who haven’t featured much over the past few weeks a chance to put their hand up,” added Diskin.

“We have let some teams off the hook this year with some poor skill execution and it is something we have been working to improve.

“It is one of those small areas of our game that has let us down and it was something that let us down when we played London at home.

“It is going to be a tough ask on Sunday, London are tough to beat on their own ground and they play some fast, attractive rugby.

“We are not going to go there and play high percentages, we are going to go and have a crack

Batley will finish in sixth position ahead of the 8s, barring an implausible 147-point swing in Sheffield’s favour if Batley lose and Sheffield beat Dewsbury.

With Diskin’s first full regular season at the helm at Mount Pleasant coming to a close this Sunday, the Grand Final winner has described his first season in charge as “Okay.”

He said: “We have fallen short of our initial goal of the top four.

“When you look back at some of the results that we have dropped points in, we could have been in the mix for a top four place which makes it more frustrating.

“The next best thing for us is to have a good run in the Shield and hopefully come away with some silverware.”
