KNH SHAME Housing organisation changed locks to let fraudsters into bungalow of dying woman – which was then looted and ransacked By Danny Lockwood THE family of a Dewsbury woman in hospital with terminal cancer were left devastated when Kirklees Neighbourhood Housing gave fraudsters access to her house, which led to it being burgled and ransacked. KNH sent a locksmith to open Sandra Wilkinson’s council bungalow in Staincliffe Crescent, after receiving a call from a woman claiming to be her. Apart from a cursory name, address and date of birth check, no other security measures were taken. Although police traced the woman who made the call and her brother – a former partner of Mrs Wilkinson – they were unable to link them to the theft and damage. The pair denied the crime which the patient’s family discovered the next day. Mrs Wilkinson, 59, who was diagnosed with cancer in March, never came home from hospital and died in Kirkwood Hospice on May 4th. Her family managed to keep the trauma of the burglary and ransacking from her. Household goods and personal items including bequests left in Mrs Wilkinson’s will, were all taken.

Nearly a month on, the family are still fighting KNH for compensation and a proper apology. Her daughter, Wendy Miller, said: “Mum had nothing, she had willed all her trinkets and a few bits such as her laptop to her grandchildren. “This was all taken and her bungalow was destroyed. Skirting boards and doors were ripped off, it was a mess.

‘We are working to learn from this and make sure it cannot happen again’ “I have been in dialogue with KNH and its chief executive Simon Rogers for eight weeks now and we still haven’t had a settlement. “More importantly, people need to know how easy this was to do. “This woman phoned the out-of-hours number saying she was my mum and claiming to be vulnerable. “They sent a locksmith out who turned up and saw a man and woman outside in a car, that’s all.

“He simply changed the locks and gave them the keys. They weren’t asked for any identification. “It is a scandal, and barely believable that such a simple scam could happen. We believe people should know how easily this was done.” A KNH spokesperson said: “We were very shocked to learn about what happened to our tenant’s home and completely understand how upset her family are. “We understand that the tenant’s home was entered through deception and we are continuing to help the police with their enquiries. “We are also doing all we can to help and support the family at this difficult time. “We can only apologise for unknowingly contributing to this situation and we are working with Council colleagues to learn from this and take steps to make sure this cannot happen again, while also making sure we can continue to provide a responsive emergency repairs service to our tenants.” Mrs Miller said she understood from police that the woman who inpersonated her mother had admitted the offence and been dealt with out of court.

A TEENAGER from Birstall who raised thousands for charity has lost her battle against a rare cancer. Ella Crann, 17, of Sycamore Way, died peacefully surrounded by family on May 19 from stage four rhabdomyosarcoma. Fewer than 60 childen a year are diagnosed with the condition in the UK and it is more common in boys. Ella raised more than £5,000 for the children’s cancer charity Candlelighters after developing the disease early last year. She also donated her hair to the Little Princess Trust following intensive chemotherapy. The charity makes wigs for young children who have lost their own hair through cancer treatment. Ella knew she was going to die and said goodbye to friends over the weekend. She had also planned her own funeral, which is due to take place on Monday (June 1) at Park Wood Crematorium in Elland.

Ella created a list of things she wanted to do before the end of her life and ticked many of them off. This included swimming with dolphins in Florida, meeting her hero, pop star Ed Sheeran, and attending the X-Factor final. Her mum Diane said: “She’s never ceased to amaze me throughout her treatment. “She’s kept going and stayed focused and took control of everything right to the end. She was amazing and I’m so, so proud.”

DEWSBURY: A woman is alleged to have stolen belongings – then demanded £1,000 for their return. Kirklees Magistrates’ Court heard Siann Colston, 31, broke into a home on Halifax Road on October 30 last year. It is claimed Colston, of Burnley, tried to blackmail the owner after the alleged burglary. She was granted unconditional bail until a hearing at Leeds Crown Court on Tuesday June 9.

Proms trader distraught after £26,000 dress raid BUT I’LL CARRY ON VOWS CLARE – AND GIRLS WILL BE OFFERED ALTERNATIVES FOR THEIR SCHOOL CELEBRATIONS By David Miller

men forcing the back door. He called police and Clare, and then saw the suspects burst out of the front door carrying the dresses. The goods were loaded into a black Vauxhall Astra which then sped off towards the Nelson Street traffic lights. One suspect, a white man with his hood up, got into the passenger side of the Astra before it drove off. Clare understands from police the Astra may have been stolen and had false number plates. She told of the dread she felt when told of the burglary and the upset of having her worst fears confirmed after arriving at the scene. Clare added: “It’s been absolutely awful. One of the worst parts is I’ve had to tell the girls their dresses are gone.” Traders in Birstall have rallied round, with a letter of support from the Sandwich Shop on Nelson Street giving Clare a boost. She said: “All the traders have been lovely and our customers have been very understanding.” Anyone with information can call police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

A DEVASTATED trader has vowed to carry on after prom dresses worth £26,000 were stolen from her Birstall shop. Clare Ellarby, 34, said she had worked too hard to build Miss Elegance on Low Lane into a thriving business to let burglars ruin everything. About 65 dresses were taken last Thursday night by raiders who fled leaving coat hangers strewn down the road. Some of the gowns, specially imported from the USA, were for prom events over the next two weeks. Girls at schools including Spen Valley High in Liversedge, Batley Girls’ High and St John Fisher Academy in Dewsbury are affected. Clare, a mother of three from Gomersal, said the dresses are about 90 per cent of her stock. She is trying to get replacements in time for the proms but some are not available, though customers will be offered alternatives. In the meantime Clare, who fought back tears as she spoke to The Press, pledged to fight on. She said: “At first I didn’t know Stolen ... proms dresses how we were going to carry on as they’ve taken nearly everything. But I can’t let this ruin us." Clare took over the business in November 2013 and she said: “I was just getting things where I wanted them to be, and then this hapA TEENAGER from Dewsbury They were described as “ordipens.” was arrested on suspicion of a ter- nary Yorkshire lads” by family The stolen goods ror offence as part of the search for spokesman and former MP Shahid are 55 dresses by two boys thought to be in Syria. News in Brief Residents moved as Oxford Grange shuts DEWSBURY: Elderly residents are being moved out of a care home amid claims it will close today (Friday). The Care Quality Commission (CQC) confirmed tenants at Oxford Grange Care Home on Oxford Road are being relocated. It comes after the watchdog raised “significant concerns” about standards of care. Debbie Westhead, of CQC, said they are working with Kirklees Council to ensure the safe relocation of residents. It comes after staff were said to have been made redundant with just a week’s notice. BATLEY: A man stopped in the early hours on Bradford Road, Batley, was more than three times over the drink-drive limit. CRAZY fundraising ideas at Batley furniture firm HSL spiralled into £11,000 for two charities. It started with upholstery team leader Charlotte Akroyd, who dislikes anything feminine, having a make-over. The initial aim was just to raise £100, but when that was smashed the team carried on. Production manager Steve Rowbottom hosted a charity auction in the style of TV’s David Dickinson – including replicating his famous orange tan. Then store environment assistant Alison Brookes dyed her hair

five different colours. An auction attracted bids for items including Redbrick Mill vouchers and a London weekend break. Further activities boosted the total for Kirkwood Hospice and the Sick Children’s Trust even more. As a result, they get a half share of the proceeds – £5,500 each. HSL chief executive Chris Hudson said: “The generosity shown by both our staff and our suppliers was overwhelming. We are delighted with how much we raised and want to thank them all for their efforts.”

‘Bidding war has broken out’ at collapsed bedding company By Staff Reporters A BIDDING war is thought to have broken out for failed Ravensthorpe bedding firm Kozee Sleep. The Press understands political fixer and bed company owner Tahir ‘Terry’ Zaman is battling brother-in-law Mohammed Rafiq for the company. Rafiq, 59, and two staff members are awaiting trial on charges related to human trafficking. Up to 100 workers staged a sit-in protest from 2pm to 4.30pm last Friday over not having their wages paid. Joint administrator

Jonny Marston, of KPMG, did not comment directly on claims of a bidding war. He said yesterday: “We continue to work through our sale of business process, and are assessing the interest in the business that has been received so far. “Additionally, we shall be meeting with the employees tomorrow (Friday) to provide them with a further update.” But a Kozee Sleep insider said that a disposal was unlikely to be imminent, as both police and forensic accountancy experts have been busy trying to unravel how a firm which was cash and asset-rich in its

last accounts, could have fallen apart so catastrophically. Kozee Sleep, founded in 1992, collapsed last week with debts said to be as high as £20m – most of which is believed to be to its bankers, who called in the administrators. One worker, who did not want to be named, said Mr Zaman and Mr Rafiq have made bids to take over the firm. The staffer took part in the sit-in and added: “We’ve got mortgages to pay and nobody wants to help. “We’re in a difficult position. If you get another job then you would forfeit

any redundancy settlement.” A third interested party, thought to involve original Hick Lane Bedding and Kozee Sleep founder Mohammed Zafar as a consultant, is also being mooted as a potential suitor for the ailing company. The GMB union said before the sit-in that staff were going into their second week without pay and there was no assurance as to when they would be paid. Neil Cole, of the GMB, said: “We will fight for justice for our members and ensure wages are paid as soon as possible. “But we are not in a

position to say when, which is a particularly distressing situation for our members.” Mr Marston said last week: “It has been confirmed to the employees that they all continue to be at risk of redundancy. “Arrears of wages that are outstanding at the date of administration are protected. “These can be claimed from the Insolvency Service in the event that the employees are made redundant.” A meeting was due to held yesterday (Thursday) afternoon, at which workers were expected to be told their fate.

Air rifle threat to man near gipsy site A MAN walking home near a gipsy camp in Batley was threatened with an air rifle in an attempt to steal his mobile phone. The victim, in his 20s, from Dewsbury, was pushing his bike across fields on Carlinghow Lane when a man approached around 9.40pm on Monday. He had an airgun pointed at his face by the assailant, who demanded he hand over his phone. Det Insp Mark Walker, of Kirklees CID, said the man told the robber to ‘get lost’. “But he was then threatened with an air rifle, which the man cocked and pointed at him. “The victim jumped on his bike and rode off, chased by a number of dogs, but he wasn’t hurt.” Travellers moved onto the playing fields last week and Kirklees Council is seeking an eviction order. The robber is white, about 5ft 6in tall and spoke with an Irish accent. Anyone who can help should contact police on 101.

OBITUARY DEAN CARROLL

News in Brief

Tributes pour in for a great Rugby League character TRIBUTES have been paid to a popular and well known former rugby league player who died at the weekend. Dean Carroll, 52, was a schoolboy star who signed as a teenager for Bradford Northern and later played for Carlisle, Warrington and Doncaster, as well as a brief spell at his hometown club Batley. The former St Mary’s and St John Fisher pupil was found collapsed at home by his partner Debbie shortly after lunch on Wednesday, May 19, at the family home in Batley. Dean suffered a heart attack while in the ambulance that came for him and three more in hospital after being taken to Dewsbury District and later a specialist unit at Pinderfields. He never regained consciousness. Doctors removed life-support systems on Saturday afternoon and he passed away peacefully on Sunday morning. His older brother Steve, 54 – like Dean a talented half back well known in Yorkshire rugby league circles – said the family had

been overwhelmed by messages of concern and support from far and wide. The two, who have an older sister Linda and younger brother James, worked for many years together at Fox’s Biscuits. Steve paid tribute to his “fun-loving” little brother. He said: “Dean was a great character, lots of fun to be around. "As a rugby player he always wanted to be in the thick of things. He was a great captain and leader. He wanted his hands on the ball all the time. “He’d push the forwards around and he had a fantas-

tic kicking game.” Dean played schoolboy rugby at St John Fisher and Batley Boys, before being snapped up by Northern, where he played for four years before moving to Carlisle, a loan spell at Warrington and finally onto Doncaster, via Batley. A feisty player with a great football brain, he coached for a while at West Bowling and Staincliffe after he finished playing. Apart from brother Steve, who played professionally at Bramley and was a successful coach at Dewsbury Celtic, their cousin John Carroll was also a talented

player for Leeds, Halifax and Hull. Steve explained that Dean had had a few minor strokes in the past, although it hadn’t prevented him from enjoying life. He said: “We had no idea how long he had been unconscious when Debbie found him and the doctors said his brain had been starved of oxygen, which caused massive problems in terms of organ failure. His condition wasn’t surviveable, even in a vegetative state.” He added that the fact Dean kept going into the next day, after the artificial life support systems were removed, wasn’t a surprise. “That was Deano,” he said. “He wouldn’t give up anything without a fight. “We just want to thank everyone for their messages. It means an awful lot to the family.” Dean’s funeral will be at St Mary’s RC Church in Batley on Wednesday (June 4) at 10am, and afterwards at Staincliffe Sports and Social Club – the former cricket club. He leaves Debbie, a son, Paul, and three grandchildren.

Friday May 29, 2015 I GAVE up on football years ago, to the point of slashing my Sky package based on them shoving the prices up yet again just to pay for their multi-billion Premiership coverage. A bunch of overpaid, useless big jessies, weeping and wailing and flailing around – and that’s just the Sky presenters. The death toll of enslaved migrant workers building Qatar’s corrupt 2022 World Cup infrastructure is a global scandal. Sepp Batter is the Al Capone of a sporting mafia and as such it was sweetly ironic that it took an FBI-led swoop of FIFA gangsters to finally disturb the nest of vipers. The Yanks might be so rubbish at footy that they don’t even know its name – “sacker” – but you make fools of them at your peril. They made my day, that’s for sure.

Have fun girls – but work awaits EN being raped in a Heckmondwike alley and drunks harrassing passers-by in Dewsbury town centre would have been far from the minds of the district’s two leading ladies on Wednesday. I dare say they might have taken a bit of extra time putting on their slap, picking their best frock even, for the State Opening of Parliament. The worlds of MPs Paula Sherriff and Jo Cox have changed out of all recognition this past three weeks. They deserve to enjoy the moment. It’s certainly a world away from the one they’ve inherited via the electorate, the grassroots of Dewsbury, Batley and Spen. Well, I say grass roots. Broken glass, rubble and boarded windows is what characterises much of their new stomping grounds. We can’t, we shouldn’t

M

expect too much too soon out of mesdames Sherriff and Cox. They aren’t miracle workers and the district’s problems are many. However, they have been given a mandate to at least champion the causes that are important to local people. Because that is not something their recent predecessors covered themselves in glory with. Mike Wood is remembered with misty-eyed fondness, for reasons that are beyond me. He made sure his staff wrote lots of mollifying letters to angry constituents, and he kissed ethnic minority backsides with the enthusiasm of a pantomime dame on opening night. He was also an early if barely acknowledged (except by this column!) exponent of milking the Parliamentary expenses cow, clever enough not to be tainted by the eventual scandal that engulfed

A rose between two thorns: Jo Cox MP flanked by ex-MPs Wood and Malik people like his Labour neighbour – they despised each other by the way – Shahid Malik. Wood also remarkably tried for years to have his constituency’s premier business success story, Redbrick Mill, closed down. It was mostly, I always thought, because he was a veritable ant in the shadow of its creator Stephen Battye. If this district needs a postindustrial epitaph, it’s that it

EING a white, middleaged, Christian, heterosexual male, I don’t expect I have ‘human rights’ as they are commonly imagined by celebrity luvvies and London lawyers who milk millions in legal aid ‘defending’ paedophiles and terrorists. It took David Cameron all of three weeks to bin one of his more populist policy pledges – to rid us of Labour’s destructive Human RIghts Act which has undermined British society and cost innocent lives. That will be celebrated by Labour and Lib Dem sweethearts and the rump of lily-livered dreamers who have done so much to ruin British society. Charities and quangos which feed off the minority bandwagon will be clinking champagne glasses this week. I trust it will be a premature celebration and that Cameron held the law back from the Queen’s Speech not just because of the ranks of Tory MPs who are lawyers. Turkeys don’t vote for Christmas. Preferably, new Justice Minister Michael Gove will construct a robust, replacement law that properly enshrines all our rights, while making vile criminals answerable to our law, not an office full of political EU pawns. And if that reduces a bunch of hug-a-terrorist prats to tears, then all the better.

had too many jobsworths like Mike Wood, too few entrepreneurs like the sadly missed Battye. Wood ludicrously said that Redbrick would decimate Batley town centre, a demise instead that he presided over personally. In fact Malik was probably the best local MP since Elizabeth Peacock, as selfserving as he was. Sure, he piggy-backed other people’s campaigns and milked the credit, but hey, that’s what politicians do. Before him, Baroness Ann Taylor of Bolton did incredible damage while building herself a ministerial career and wiping her feet on the town. It won’t be difficult for Sherriff and Cox to outperform that lot.

Traffic warden Bob Smith didn’t puff himself up to resemble a paramilitary hardcase like today’s crew. Former doorman Bob didn’t need to. He kept town centre motorists honest and traders happy, with common sense management. How difficult is that? And we’re not talking about ‘the good old days’. It’s not that long ago. Paula Sherriff has pledged to fight the hospital changes but as Wendy Senior’s letter today indicates, that’s a battle already lost. No worries Paula, there are plenty more left for you. With all Labour councillors and a Labour cabinet, she has no excuse for not banging heads together. No one’s going to throw millions at reviving Batley or, particularly, Dewsbury, but these women can start by changing attitudes and getting people to first acknowledge the problems, then start doing something about them. Having Kirklees get tough on absentee landlords of derelict and dangerous buildings, clearing the human dross off the streets and ridding Dewsbury of those traffic zombies would be a decent start.

WAS in Dewsbury town centre on Tuesday afternoon. Three fluorescentjacketed traffic wardens were prowling around trying to drive business and shoppers out of town. The centre of Market Place belonged to a dozen morons in various states of drug/ drink induced stupors. Or maybe just morons. They were nuisances to people going about their business, only mildly intimidating, although one tried to beg from me and, when ignored, to pick a fight. Good job I had my best jacket on and resisted the temptation, because you’d wait a long time for PC Plod to find the darn place. The police did not just abandon the district when they ran away to hide behind desks and excuses in Huddersfield, they turned our town centres over to low lives. Surrendered. I seem to remember there being designated no-drinking zones. When did that change? When PC Colin Sykes patrolled Dewsbury he knew most of the derelicts and the problem individuals and managed them. He knew the business owners and their concerns too.

For England, King Harry and St George...

SAY old bean, I do like the cut of this young whippersnapper Harry Wales’s jib. A spell in the army clearly straightened out this fellow’s feckless ways! Indeed, Prince Harry is fast emerging as the nation’s Royal darling, just enough of the rascal, married to a winning smile and a common touch. I’m not sure that a prince of the realm is the best possible champion for bringing back National Service, as Harry trumpeted recently. Too many snides and socialists will call to mind images of Laurence Olivier astride his charger as Henry V at Agincourt, despatching simple yeomen into the bloody fray. But coming in the week the OECD reported the UK has half-a-million young ‘Neets’ (not in education, employment or training), it was timely, from a

I

Sandhurst graduate or not. We have record numbers of young people who have simply given up, to the point of being virtually unemployable. Right on cue reports emerged showing British-charities milking millions from the UK’s overseas aid farce. We are running our armed forces and public services into the ground, hosting migrants by the million, yet we can’t employ or train our own youngsters. And the only budget ringfenced outside the NHS is Overseas Aid. International Development ministers are signing off grants to charities run by people on six-figure salaries, just to spend the budget. Results? Pah! I’m with Harry. Want to help people in west Africa? Train our Neets to dig wells, build schools, to kickstart them into a meaningful life. Roll up their benefits and that aid budget into funding two years of a disciplined environment which provides some vital life-work skills, instead of backhanding charity scams and the private bank accounts of third world dictators. Mind you, it couldn’t possibly happen until we repeal that dastardly law. Making them get out of bed would breach their human rights. Harry for King? We could do worse...

Did this woman see hit-and-run?

Wyke. The driver, 43, of Dewsbury, left the scene but later handed himself in to police. He is on bail pending further enquiries into claims of causing death by careless driving. Miss Holland, a former pupil of RM Grylls Middle School in Hightown and Whitcliffe Mount High, was to have been a bridesmaid at her mother’s upcoming wedding. Anyone who can assist in identifying the potential witness should contact the major collision enquiry team on 101.

IMAGES have been released of a woman who may have seen a fatal hit-and-run crash. She is believed to have travelled from Cleckheaton to Halifax by taxi on May 16. On the way it was in collison with a pedestrian on Whitehall Road. Victoria Holland, 28, of Scholes, died followed the incident, which happened near the junction with Westfield Lane at

Man confronts priest ‘who abused me 45 years ago’ A MAN travelled to Italy to confront a priest who he claims sexually abused him in Mirfield as a teenager. Mark Murray, now 59, alleges Father Romano Nardo committed the acts at a former Catholic seminary school on Far Common Road. He visited the religious order in Verona where Father Nardo, 73, lives. Mr Murray covertly filmed the encounter with a camera hidden inside a wristwatch on behalf of Italy’s La Repubblica newspaper. He told Father Nardo: “You have had a massive, negative impact on my life and my family and my children. I tried many times to meet with you. “Romano Nardo, do you know who I am? I think you do. Mark Murray. Do you remember me?” When Father Nardo stayed silent, Mr Murray added: “Do

you remember Mirfield?” Mr Murray persisted: “Look at me! Look at me! Can you look at me?” The priest eventually mumbled a response and said: “I’m sorry if what happened in your life was caused by me. “If it is my fault that you bear a heavy cross, I believe I should ask the Lord for forgiveness, for having erred. I’m sorry. I’m very sorry.” Mr Murray replied: “You abused me. I spent many years thinking I would wake up one morning and start abusing children because I was abused by you.” The school at Mirfield was run by the Comboni Missionaries, also known as the Verona Fathers. Mr Murray, 14 at the time of the abuse, said he was homesick there and the priest initially offered him kindness and comfort.

But Mr Murray claims the priest swiftly took advantage of his vulnerability and began abusing him. It was not until 1997 that Mr Murray informed the religious order that he had been abused, though his complaints were dismissed. Two years later, he complained to West Yorkshire Police, who launched an investigation which remains open. Last year, the order reached an out-of-court settlement with Mr Murray and 10 other victims, paying each of them between £7,000 and £30,000. Police applied to have Father Nardo extradited but it is claimed he is too mentally fragile to leave Italy. Mr Murray added: “Nardo should be in a court of law and should go to prison. The missionary order has shown total disregard for the victims.”

This is what will happen to our hospital Dear Sir, The ‘Save Dewsbury Hospital Services’ group attended the Let’s Talk event at the Oakwell Centre at Dewsbury Hospital, advertised “to hear the public’s view on the changes planned, how to make services better, and to please come along and tell us what you think.” This was not what the meeting was about. Two doctors from Dewsbury Hospital were there to tell us what was going to happen. They said the plans have been passed, this is what is going to happen: the Bronte Towers building

Fight for our home town From: Beth Prescott, Lichfield Road, Dewsbury Sir, I am writing to voice my support for the proposal for a Dewsbury Town Council put forward by Mark

Letter of the Week Wendy Senior, Dewsbury will be demolished and everything apart from six beds will be moved to Pinderfields. The old Staincliffe Wing will also be demolished. Bronte Towers Maternity Unit was built to replace Moorlands, Crossley and Batley maternity homes, about 35 years ago. Now, the Trust says the building is old and costs too much money to maintain; same with the Staincliffe building; only six beds left in the Ridings building for pregnant ladies in our area; an epidural will not be

Eastwood in last week’s paper and to express my keenness to get involved in this project and help in any way I can. I’ll admit, I wasn’t even a twinkle in my mother’s eye in 1974 when Kirklees Council was formed and Dewsbury Borough Council was lost. But having grown up in

available at Dewsbury. We are also losing intensive care high dependency services; the children’s ward has already been moved to Pinderfields Hospital, where every service is being developed – 88 extra beds for in-patients. There was a young woman at the meeting who had to take her young son, who needed regular hospital treatment, to Pinderfields. It caused travelling difficulties as she had another child to care for. Dewsbury is classed as a

Dewsbury, I know that something needs to be done to bring decision-making back to Dewsbury. The way things are is not working. We can either sit on the sidelines and continue to complain whilst maintaining the status quo, or we can work together to make a change for the better.

deprived area; we have more need than Wakefield of a good hospital with specialised services. But there we are. We were told when ‘Meeting the Challenge’ debates began, there were three options. It soon became obvious there were no consultations – a choice had been made before any discussions were made at these meetings. It was a farce from start to finish; all that money wasted. It would be nice if we had more people to support our group. Jo Cox MP came but left before the meeting began.

I know what I will be doing. I am Dewsbury born and raised and I hope that one day I will raise my own children here. I want to do anything I can to restore Dewsbury to its former glory. This is a fantastic idea by Mark. Nothing good in life ever comes easy but I am sure that if we all get behind this, work together on it and fight passionately for our home town, we can do this. This is our responsibility, this is our time to do something about it, this is our town we are fighting for. I hope many others will join this cause.

Is this the same Tory? From: A. Wilson, Carlton Road, Dewsbury Dear Sir, In response to a story last week regarding bringing back the Town Council to Dewsbury.

A few years ago Dewsbury Hospital had no debt. People from this area had paid for our hospital services and now Stephen Eames, Chief Executive of Mid Yorkshire Trust, decides to demolish our hospital buildings. I asked what would happen to any money received from building on Bronte Towers and Staincliffe sites and I was told it would go to the government treasury. This is what will happen to our hospitals by 2017. Remind your doctor that you want an appointment at Dewsbury Hospital, not Pinderfields.

Is this the same Dewsbury East Conservative candidate who has lost four times at the last four local elections? Is this the same person who worked so closely with our previous MP, who left Dewsbury to suffer at the hands of the Tory government and concentrated his efforts in the leafy suburbs? I have to ask myself whether he truly means what he says or is he just being expedient, knowing that this is just another way of him being defeated at the ballot box. Well done Coun Kane for showing some realism.

Keep roads safe for pupils From: Name & address supplied Dear Sir, As a grandparent of pupils at the Windmill CoE Primary School in Birstall, I am extremely concerned that there will no longer be

a school crossing attendant after the current one retires. Kirklees claim there is no funding to provide one, so they are putting children’s lives at risk. I realise all schools have problems with traffic but the Windmill school is located near the Batley Girls’ High along Windmill Lane, whose pupils travel from outside Birstall by coach, mini-bus, taxi etc, causing severe congestion. Add to this the regular service buses and parents collecting children and there is often gridlock, then drivers become frustrated and drive off at speed. Our children deserve to be able to cross the road safely, but with no traffic control a serious accident is inevitable. I implore our new MP, local councillors and most of all, parents, to contact Kirklees to make sure they do something to keep these roads safe for children to cross before a child is injured.

Thanks for kind words From: David Honeybell, Heckmondwike Dear Sir, I would like to thank Jack Hesketh for his few kind words (last week’s Forum). Thank you for bracketing me with those socialist icons, Len McCluskey and Ken Livingstone. You make me feel so very proud and honoured. As for my words helping to boost the Conservative party vote, Jo Cox MP held Batley and Spen with an increased majorit and Paula Sherriff MP gained Dewsbury and Mirfield from the Tories. On a serious note: in last week’s Ed Lines, I found myself agreeing when it asked where all the extra doctors and other medical staff would be found to run our NHS seven days a week. Nobody knows the

answer to that question, including the PM. I soon found myself at odds though when Danny Lockwood once again gave his support to privatising our NHS. All our NHS needs is to be funded properly and then administered by people who really believe in an NHS, and not as it is now, run by Tory appointed puppets, in quangos such as the Mid Yorkshire Hospitals NHS trust and their partners in crime, the Clinical Commissioning Groups. The CCGs should be scrapped; but if they are required at all, why do we need three to cover Huddersfield, North Kirklees and Wakefield? With chief executives on £120k, chairmen on £110k, finance officers on £90,000, it’s no wonder they stick to the orders of the government piper. And with 211 CCGs nationwide, millions could be

saved by some joining forces, or better still, being abolished. Privatisation is not the way, but proper funding and much better management must surely be the best way forward. Also last week, on page 10, in ‘MP Cox’s vision’, you quote Jo Cox saying “Labour

needs to decide who and what it is for”. The answer should not be in doubt. The ‘who’ is the working class and the ‘what’ is the trades union movement. Middle Britain, middle England or the middle class are able to look after themselves.

Man who died after river plunge named A MAN who died after being rescued from the River Calder in Dewsbury has been named. Christopher Matthews, 55, was pulled from the water near Sands Lane at around 8pm last Friday. Mr Matthews, of Dewsbury, was rushed to Dewsbury District Hospital but died later that night. Witnesses saw him walking

alone around 7.30pm. Minutes later he was in the water near the Savile Road bridge. Police are now trying to establish how that happened, though they ruled out third party involvement. Det Insp Stef Wiseman, of Kirklees CID, said: “We are trying to clarify the circumstances of how he ended up in the river.” Anyone near the Savile

Road bridge, Dewsbury ring road or Wilton Street at the time should call police. Mr Matthews was a white man with receding dark hair, a moustache and was wearing a dark jacket with a blue shirt and blue jeans. Det Insp Wiseman added: “Anyone who believes they saw a man matching Mr Matthews’ description can call us on 101.”

A SERIES of walks highlighting fascinating aspects of Batley’s history is being launched next week by local historian Malcolm Haigh. The former journalist, who studied and taught local history for many years, has led similar walks for several years and all have proved to be very easy – and popular. Malcolm, who has published four history books about the town, is chairman

of the town’s History Group and a regular speaker at community groups. The first of his four walks package this year is the Carlinghow Corn Trail, which will leave the foot of Carlinghow Field Hill at 6.30pm on Thursday, June 4. After delving into the history of the town’s oldest courthouse and public transport business, it sample snippets of the old corn mill and

Wilton Park, before investigating industrial aspects of Upper Batley, including farming, brewing and mining. On June 11, Malcolm will go Tramping into Tewitland (Hanging Heaton), head to Batley Carr and back to see how far it is on June 18, and Beat the Birstall Bounds on June 25. All the walks are circular and the charge for each walk is £6.

‘Don’t protect this man’ plea after brutal assault and rape A RAPIST who brutally attacked a man in Heckmondwike should not be given sanctuary, a councillor said. Police are hunting a white man who struck at around 3am on Monday in a ginnel off Albion Street, near the town centre McDonald’s restaurant. The victim, 23, was raped after being seriously assaulted and is now being helped by specialist officers.

Kirklees Council leader Coun David Sheard (Lab, Heckmondwike) said anyone with information must call police immediately. He said: “People shouldn’t falsely think they are protecting someone, whoever they are.” Coun Sheard added of the incident: “I’m shocked by it. It’s a terrible thing to happen. I don’t expect it to happen anywhere.”

The victim met his attacker earlier on Sunday evening. Forensic teams searched an area around Albion Street. Det Insp Mark Walker, of Kirklees CID, said: “I would like to speak to anyone who saw a man around McDonald’s or Albion Street from about 2.45am.” Witnesses can call Kirklees CID on 101 or the Crimetoppers in confidence on 0800 555 111.

CYCLE legend Brian Robinson received a £15,000 payout for injuries suffered when he was knocked off his bike. Brian, 84, of Mirfield, fractured a collarbone and ribs and punctured a lung when he was in collision with a car in Thornhill last year. He also sustained a deep cut to his arm and spent almost five days in hospital recovering. Brian made a claim through his membership of national body British Cycling, which was handled by law firm Leigh Day. He said: “I’ve had a great medical ‘once-over’ and I’m obviously pleased with the compensation.” Brian, who

Brian Robinson recovering in hospital last year still rides 80 miles a week, was back in the saddle only six weeks after the incident on July 16 last year. He was cycling with friends when a VW Passat pulled out in front of him on Lees Hall Road. It happened less than a fortnight after Brian was guest of honour for the Tour de France grand depart in Yorkshire. Brian was the first Briton

to finish the Tour de France and in 1958 was the first to win a stage. Andrew Bradley, of Leigh Day, said: “Cycling is Brian’s life and we were extremely pleased to have played a role in getting him back on his bike. “It has also been an honour to have helped a legend of the cycling world in his legal claim.”

Community centre victory COUNCIL chiefs could hand over control of Mirfield Community Centre in a victory for campaigners. The building on Water Royd Lane looked like being sold off after officials decided it was beyond economical repair. An outcry led to the withdrawal in March of a report due to be considered by Kirklees Council’s cabinet. A petition was launched to keep the centre open – and now the council is considering an asset transfer to the trust which runs it.

The Mirfield Community Trust (MCT) and dozens of groups who host activities there faced being turfed out. A council spokesman said: “We are processing their asset application.” The row came to a head in November when the boiler broke and the council, which owns the building, said it was too costly to repair. An asset transfer would hand the MCT the freehold and put them in charge of the building’s upkeep. The group’s management

committee now hopes to install a new boiler over the summer at a cost of £16,000. Lisa Newby, of the MCT, said: “We don’t have any deadlines but we know our immediate future is secure. “What we have learned from this process is how valued the centre is by the local community but also how many people didn’t know anything about us. “As a result of all this, we have many new supporters and we have raised awareness of what we do.”

Dora, a heroine of the hell of Dunkirk Last week’s 75th anniversary of the Dunkirk evacuation recalled the heroics of a Mirfield woman who took part. Press correspondent Mike Popplewell reports. THE Dunkirk evacuation between May 27 and June 4 1940 was a pivotal moment in the Second World War. Thousands of British soldiers were trapped on the beaches of Normandy following a failed invasion bid. Every available seaworthy vessel, about 800 in total, answered the call for help – and right in the middle of the rescue mission was Dora Walker. A product of the elite allgirls private school of Roedean in Brighton, Dora was a month short of her 50th birthday. In a further act of bravery she then acted as a pilot for boats going through North Sea minefields. Those exploits were a world away from her background in Mirfield as a Sunday School teacher. Dora, born in July 1890, was the daughter of John Ely Walker, who lived with his 10 children at Knowle House. She founded the Boys Club in Ravensthorpe and took St John’s Ambulance classes. That led her to become a nurse in London and Belgium in the First World War, including at the Duchess of

Dora, top, and her father John Ely Walker Sutherland’s Hospital at St Omer. Dora was then a nurse in London’s East End but she moved to Whitby during the Second World War blitz. It was thought the sea air would be better for a bronchial condition she developed. Decendant James Walker, managing director of James

Walker and Sons, takes up the story. He said: “She took to fishing and became the only woman in the Whitby fleet to gain a license to sail her coble. “She was already nearly 50 at the time of Dunkirk, but she had no hesitation sailing into those dangerous waters to help rescue our troops.” By the end of the eighth day of the evacuation, nearly 350,000 troops had been rescued from the French beaches and Dora had proudly done her bit. She continued seafaring until 1954, during which time she wrote three books about her experiences. Dora became curator of the shipping section of Whitby Museum in 1946 and vice president of the Whitby Literary and Philosophical Society. She was president of the Ladies’ Lifeboat Guild (1952), a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts (from 1953) and Keeper of Whitby Museum (1954). Dora died aged 90 in 1980 – but her life is still celebrated, including recent exhibitions at Whitby Museum.

A NEW councillor is bringing lessons learned in the USA to her work serving Batley residents. Coun Marielle O’Neill, 27, did an internship in Washington DC where she saw what local authorities here may have to become. Similar bodies over there provide basic services and direct people who need further support elsewhere. Coun O’Neill (Lab, Batley West) believes funding cuts mean councils like Kirklees could have to do the same. She said: “We’ll also have to tell people the truth, even if it isn’t what they want to hear. “In future there’s a lot of things the council won’t be able to do and there’s no point making false promises.” Coun O’Neill's internship was through the Washington Center from January to June 2012. She worked at lobbying group the Council of State Governments on cross-party voter registration. Coun O’Neill also saw first-hand President Barack Obama's re-election bid take shape in the state of Virginia. Further travels took her to South Korea in 2013, where

she taught English to children aged five to 13. Coun O’Neill then worked for Kirklees Council’s care phone help button service for older people. She graduated with an English degree from Leicester University in 2009 and then studied for a Masters in Politics at the University of Leeds. Coun O’Neill grew up in Batley and attended St Mary’s RC primary school and St John Fisher High. She polled more than 5,000 votes at this month’s election and succeeds her father in Batley West, former councillor Peter O’Neill. Coun O’Neill believes issues like housing, unemployment and school places are likely to be in her in tray. She added: “Working class people in Batley feel like the odds are stacked against them. “I want to do what I can to help everyone in Batley have a fair shot in life. “And I’ll work hard to be a strong voice for the people of Batley West.”

History is a walk in the park for Barry... OVER 25 YEARS’ EXPERIENCE

FREE QUOTATIONS TOP QUALITY • GREAT SERVICE • BEST PRICE SATISFACTION GUARANTEED

KIRKLEES park warden Barry Daly admits he was disappointed when first told he was being sent to Wilton Park in Batley. The former textile worker and engineer applied for a post with Kirklees Council 10 years ago. Roles at five major parks were up for grabs and Barry, now 70, wanted one in his home town of Huddersfield. But missing out turned into a blessing when he learned of the Heavy Woollen area’s rich history. Barry, now retired and living in Mirfield, immersed himself in a world of Luddites, mills and a grammar school founded in 1612. He also learned about

Bagshaw Museum and the Sheard family who used to live there. Barry said: “I’m a Huddersfield lad but we simply can’t match the history that there is over here.” His love for Batley and

“Wilton Park is the jewel in Batley’s crown... it’s the best park in Kirklees...” Wilton Park is such that he now hosts history walks around the 36-acre site off Bradford Road. Barry will use old pictures to show how the area has

changed over the years and to illustrate his anecdotes. He said: “What captured my imagination was seeing old pictures of trams coming up from Dewsbury. “Both sides of the road were full of mills and yet right in the middle of this was a beautiful oasis. “Wilton Park is considered to be the jewel in Batley’s crown and rightly so. I think it’s the best park in Kirklees.” Other attractions include the Minor K Ford Observatory, which is opposite the museum and home to the Batley and Spen Astronomical Society. Barry’s next history walk is on Thursday, June 4 from the museum at 11am.

REAL ale lovers in Spen Valley are in for a treat when a refurbished pub in Cleckheaton opens. The Rose and Crown on Westgate will serve beer from its own microbrewery, including a new brew called Whitechapel. Spen Valley is already a mecca for real ale lovers through events such as the Bobtown Beer Bash. Pub renovations, ongoing for a year, are nearly complete, with the venue due to open in

June. The work is the brainchild of former builder Andy Gascoigne of the Haworth Steam Brewing Company in Haworth. The pub will also serve and feature ales from other local suppliers. Mr Gascoigne launched his business in Haworth as a bar, bistro and microbrewery in 2011 and the brewing side really took off. It expanded to a unit in Cleckheaton and it was then

that Andy saw the Rose and Crown for sale. He added: “At the back of it there was a massive building which we could turn into a brewery and it was that which interested us.” Having turned that into a 200 gallon-a-week empire, attention turned to the pub. Andy said of the Rose and Crown: “We’ve turned the clock back 200 years. It has a very traditional feel with flagged floors and wood burners.”

AUTOMATIC SUCCESS Set-up your emails to get effective marketing his month I am going to talk about marketing automation, what it is and why is it becoming the most effective form of digital marketing?

T

Marketing Automation It does exactly what you would think – it automates your email marketing which saves administration time, and most importantly it allows you to deliver more relevant messages which will lead to a higher conversion. Over the years we have largely become immune to standard email marketing, generally the first thing we

do when opening our inbox is block delete everything that looks like spam. Chances are your emails may be deleted by people who have signed up to receive them, and the main reason is lack of relevance. Marketing automation allows a business to set-up automated emails (with unique and relevant subject lines – the key to effective email marketing) based on list management techniques. Your email addresses will be stored in lists according to known information and the automation triggers an email

Onwards and upwards

FORMER Press sports editor Jared Priestley has joined a top branding and marketing company. Jared’s role at Halifax-based Shrewdd Marketing includes working with Cleckheaton firm Wakefield Acoustics. Jared, a University of Huddersfield Journalism graduate, joined Shrewdd with fellow new recruit Emily Madigan (pictured above). Shrewdd offer a range of services, including brand development, public relations and social media. Jared said: “I loved working at The Press and will always be grateful to the team for the skills and knowledge they helped me gain in my time there. “I’m looking forward to the next step in my career and helping contribute to the growth of an award-winning marketing company.”

send based on certain criteria. So for example, if someone visits your website and buys shoes, that person’s details would be stored in the list of people who buy shoes and your marketing would be setup to send all shoe related emails to everyone on that list, therefore making the email more relevant to the recipient and having a greater chance of success.

How can I set it up? Mailchimp is a great solution for marketing automation, making it very easy for

Web TALK with Andrew Firth Welcome to the latest edition of Web Talk, helping Kirklees website owners to prosper online you to set-up lists and groups within lists. Each group can have its own email template and triggers. So from our example above, you may have a list for ‘shoes’ and within that list have groups for ‘male shoes’ and ‘female shoes’, containing the email addresses of men who have bought shoes and females, respectively. You can then set-up your emails for each group to target potential male and female buyers, including a unique subject line (ie Men’s Shoes Sale Ends…) and have this trigger based on a manual send or timed from their previous purchase, depending

on the message. Advanced solutions would involve the website automatically dropping email addresses into the correct lists based on purchasing habits – but to start using the software is very straight-forward and is relevant to websites of all kinds, including non-ecommerce. Marketing automation is so effective because it can be made to be so relevant to the recipient, unlike generic, blanket email marketing. If you want to get more out of the most cost effective form of digital marketing then you should try setting up some automation.

Smell the coffee at T3 Wellbeing A BRAND new health and wellness centre has now opened a coffee shop to augment its growing range of facilities. T3 Wellbeing in Albion Mills, near the Redbrick Mill traffic lights on Bradford Road in Dewsbury, is the brainchild of former St John Fisher High School best friends Danny Thomas and James Ashton. Danny is the coach of Dewsbury Celtic and a professional rugby league player with Oxford, and along with electrician James opened their dream project just after Christmas. Apart from running regular exercise classes, and hosting community groups including a fitness class from Westborough High School, the centre has a dance studio, beauty therapy rooms, a tattoo parlour and now a coffee shop, run by Danny’s wife Rebecca. “It’s been hard work but we’re starting to see the fruits of it now,” said Danny, who also works with children in care. The coffee shop opens for breakfasts and lunches from 7.45-3pm Monday to Friday, and 8-12.30pm on Saturdays. For details of classes and memberships call Danny on 07903 624281.

Finally action is taken on nuisance phone calls Legal G OOD news could be around the corner where dealing with nuisance phone calls are concerned. Unsolicited marketing phone calls, often automated, can be disconcerting, especially for elderly or vulnerable people living alone. Now a Nuisance Calls and Text Task Force (yes, really!) has been established and the body has produced a report and recommendations obliging firms who carry out these direct marketing activities to ensure

Eye with Hellewell, Pasley and Brewer that they obtain and use consumer content in a legitimate way. Alongside this the

Information Commissioner’s Office has called for increased powers to fine firms who continue to make nuisance calls in defiance of the law. Whether there will be a reduction in the number/volume of nuisance calls/texts remains to be seen I guess for now we should at least applaud the law for taking the issue seriously and trying to get action.

Vintage day in store for Batley By Steve Martyn A FLYOVER by an iconic Second World War plane is to cap the biggest event in Batley’s year tomorrow (Sat). The RAF Dakota will roar over the Market Place as the town hosts a 1940s-themed Vintage Day. It was with 233 Squadron and saw service throughout the war, including the D-Day landings and the crossing of the Rhine. Powered by two 1,200 horsepower engines, it is now part of the RAF’s Battle of Britain Memorial Flight. There will be two stages of live entertainment, more

than 30 stalls, craft workshops and vintage vehicles. It is free, but visitors are encouraged to “bring a tin to get in” in aid of the Batley Food Bank. A preview of the entertainment is on tonight (Fri) at the Victoria Function Rooms. Singer Natasha Harper is to star at a “dance the night away” event from 7.30pm backed by The Andersons. Tickets are £12.50 including a hot supper. Revellers are invited to dress to impress. Tomorrow visitors will see a vintage market with stalls offering everything from

homeware haberdashery. Vintage vehicles, from 1920s roadsters to buses and fire engines, will also be on display. Batley Library and Art Gallery is the venue for craft activities such as the making of a 3D Lowry landscape. Miss Harper returns with her band, the Sixties Gems, as one of many on stage live acts. Batley favourites Lula and the Bebops, who wowed the crowds last year, are back along with the Sparkle Sisters. There will be a separate dance stage featuring per-

formers including Major Swing and Brandyn Shaw. Batley Vintage Day is from

10am to 5pm. Visitors are advised to arrive early so they have time to see and do

PROOF if needed that TV fame is fickle. While in London last week I was taking tea at the Café Royal Hotel in Regent Street, when in walked Paris Hilton to launch a new perfume. No one took a snap or even cared, yet a few years back she was all over the media ... still she told me she was on her way to Superdrug in Liverpool, to promote it there! KYLIE is back in promotion mode and was at the Blakes Hotel in Kensington last week, and she told me that she has great affection for her early hits. “I have grown to love them again, I mean people can be cruel about them, but they have stood the test of time and that is a good thing really,” she said. I ATTENDED the Variety Club UK James Bond Launch at the Film Museum in London, with a host of stars including Dame Shirley Bassey, Cilla Black, and hosted by my good friend Eamonn Holmes, who tells me: “You know Ann, like all men I secretly think I am still in a with a chance to play James Bond, but in my

X FACTOR judge Cheryl Fernandez-Versini may be returning to the show, but it will be for a lot less money. A source tells me that “this year the money on offer for judges is far less, due to the low ratings of the last few series. She will be back, but it’s a budget return...”

FORMER Top Gear executive producer Andy Wilman has had a dig at what he called the BBC’s ‘Meddling Department’. “It was a lot harder to work there than people expected, and yes in a way it’s great to be free of it ... I know we will all return, and it will be even better success.”

BIRSTALL based Crossbank Methodists are finding it hard going in their first season of Central Yorkshire League cricket and their six wicket defeat at former Bradford Central League side Adwalton was their sixth league game without a win. Skipper Richard Hosley produced an outstanding innings to lift his side’s total to 163, after coming in with the score on 36-5. He was eventually last out having hit a match best 83 off 90 balls. In reply Adwalton put on 42 for the first wicket, which fell to y o u n g Australian J o s h M a s t i n (pictured), and though Alan Firth took 2-36 the home side eased home with six wickets and 10 overs to spare. Crossbank now have a two week break, while Mirfield, beaten by 147 runs in their last game at Great Preston, face home and away games with Gildersome in the same period.

LEAD: Crossbank skipper Richard Hosley lifted his side Bradford League bound Birstall look unlikely to leave the CYL in a blaze of glory. They crashed to a 123-run defeat at joint Premier Division leaders Ossett in their last game and this week face an awkward derby clash at home to Mirfield Parish Cavaliers and a trip to fancied Townville in the Jack Hampshire Cup Sunday. Paul Blakeley took three wickets for Birstall, albeit at nearly eight an over, as Ossett totalled 233-8 while Birstall struggled to 110 all out with Rob Macfarlane’s 35 from 24 balls being the only highlight. In contrast Parish go into this week’s game full of confidence after a 127-run win over Hunslet Nelson that featured a century from Nazar Hussain and they will be hoping for Cup progress on Sunday when they entertain Championship side

Northowram. Ossett had Rohan and Gurman Randhawa to thank for major contributions against Birstall, with 50 and 4-18 respectively, and skipper John Sadler will be hoping for more of the same when they go to Methley for a top of the table crunch encounter tomorrow. In the Championship, Hopton Mills and Liversedge are at home to Azaad and Wakefield St Michaels respectively, while in the remaining Jack Hampshire ties Hopton Mills have a bye, while Liversedge entertain Wakefield Thornes and Premier Division strugglers Batley are at home to joint leaders Methley having first faced last years promotion partners Buttershaw St Paul’s in the league. It looks like being a tough week at Mount Pleasant.

BRADFORD CRICKET LEAGUE

Hilton hits hundred IT MAY be a little early to be using the word ‘crucial’ in terms of Bradford League fixtures but it is hard to underestimate the task facing Gomersal skipper Graham Hilton tomorrow when unbeaten Second Division leaders Morley make the short trip down the A62. Hilton has been showing some welcome solidity at the top of the Gomersal order, hitting 103 not out in the derby win win over Spen Victoria last weekend and a top scoring 31 in the Bank Holiday game at Baildon. At Baildon Hilton’s effort was part of a 48 run opening stand but things went disastrously wrong thereafter as the last nine wickets fell for the addition of just 56 more in a nine wicket defeat. This inconsistency threatens any trophy ambitions for fourth placed Gomersal but a win over Morley would help keep in touch with the leaders. Second placed Scholes, eight wicket winners over Hartshead Moor, will be hoping for more of the same at home to Keighley. Spen Victoria, currently fifth, finished their innings at Gomersal with four successive sixes from Abid Arwan, off New Zealander Ben Hydes but the bowling was infinitely less explosive as Gomersal cruised to a

BOUNCER: Gomersal’s Ben Hydes surprises Spen skipper Imran Patel seven-wicket win. Skipper Imran Patel will be hoping to do better at home to Idle. One bowler ‘earning his corn’ is Cleckheaton’s paceman Curtis Free from Doncaster. Cleck captain John Wood had high hopes for Free and the new man hasn’t disappointed. His 3-38 against Woodlands paved the way for a four-wicket win on Saturday but even a superb 6-57 return at East Bierley on Monday could not avert a 61run setback as John Wood’s side struggle to find that consistency necessary to make concerted challenge for a third successive First Division title win. There have been some good batting performances, both Andy Gorrod and Tim Jackson have made centuries at the top of the innings, but too few players are regularly

making telling contributions and New Farnley’s visit to Moorend will be tough. Former Yorkshire and Kent leg spinner Mark Lawson, a Gomersal junior product, has been in good form for New Farnley and as skipper he will be delighted to see his side only three points behind Cleckheaton going into tomorrow’s clash. Hanging Heaton are only six adrift of Cleckheaton after their holiday weekend yielded 27 points. Saturday’s win over Lightcliffe featured an unbeaten 75 from Josh Shaw, the son of former Yorkshire paceman Chris, and after the defeat to Bradford and Bingley on Monday, Gary Fellows will be hoping his side can repeat that performance when they go to early-season title candidates Pudsey Congs.

Rob Bordman led the way with a hattrick, with Ricky Newman, Aidan Schofield and Bill Phethean all contributing one each. Andrew Pickles claimed Woodman’s consolation. The win sees the newly crowned champi-

‘Saffy’ hits 75 for Woodlands CRICKET EXTRA PERFORMANCE of the week, if not the season, could go to Woodlands’ Pakistani bowler Sarfraz Ahmed, who came in to bat in the Bradford League game against Farsley, with the Oakenshaw side on 55-8, and left 36 balls later having spectacularly made 75 out of 99 for the ninth wicket. Ahmed hit seven fours and seven sixes with the bat, before bowling eight maidens in a 10-over spell that yielded a 1-5 return to help bowl out Farsley for just 45. CURRENT Central Yorkshire League champions Methley cruised into the Black Sheep Yorkshire Champions Trophy last four after beating holders Elsecar in a 88-run victory. Methley posted a score of 313-8, thanks to a great innings from Richard Foster, who hit seven sixes and 12 fours on his way to a magnificient 125. Elsecar could only manage 225 in reply.

ons finish four points ahead of nearest rivals Birkenshaw, and 16 points ahead of third-placed Millbridge. Fishers beat Woodman last month to win the Heavy Woollen Challenge Cup final at Ossett Albion. Navigation are DIVISION ONE champions after they won 3-2 at bottom side Battyeford Reserves. Robert McCall, Tom Heaton and Dave Blakeley netted for Navigation as they moved seven points clear at the top. Nigel Saddington and Tom Bruce were Battyeford’s scorers. Town Rangers look favourites to finish in the runners-up spot after Joe Wills (two), Danny Berry, Scott Thornton, Robert Dolan, James Hutchinson and Richard Carter all scored in a 7-1 win over Clifton. Deighton WMC slip to third place after losing 4-3 at Birkenshaw Reserves thanks to strikes from Tom Smith, Mike Durham, Will Gough and Nathan Foster. In the only other game played, Nathan Clarke hit four goals as Punch Bowl won 64 against The Yorkshireman. Ryan Foster and Tom Blackburn hit the others, with The Yorkshireman replying through Ryan O’Hara, Stephen Hurst, Simeon Fletcher and Ben Simpson.

Classy Cooper defeats Bulls THORNHILL TROJANS U12s entertained Shaw Cross Bulls in a top of the division local derby. Thornhill struck first with Reece Fisher breaking away to cross the white wash. Forward Tom Darley, Scott Naylor and Thomas Hiscocks all played great in both attack and defence with Ben Moorhose and Ben Hunter both causing Shaw Cross problems. Parents’ player of the match Jake Buckley had a fantastic game and managed to cross the line for a try. The opposition’s and Thornhill’s man of the match Dylan Cooper had his best game to date, driving the ball hard and straight. Wingers and centres Dillon Kilgallon-Shaw, Ryan Turner, Asim Collomosse and Zak Harrod all controlled the flanks well, battling to the end. Harrod managed to cross the white wash thanks to Noah Ellis, Ben Pritchard and Kurt Hodgson all working hard with ball in hand.

Trojans romp past Sharks to Jim Brown Cup final JIM BROWN HEAVY WOOLLEN CUP

THORNHILL TROJANS SHAW CROSS SHARKS

42 4

at Overthorpe Park A BUMPER crowd in Overthope Park saw Thornhill Trojans register a comprehensive victory over local rivals Shaw Cross Sharks in the Jim Brown Heavy Woollen Cup semi final. Man of the match Joel Gibson had a hand in most of Thornhill’s attacking moves with half-back Danny Ratcliffe also instrumental. Mindaugas Bendikas was another player in fine form as he used his

pace to cause Shaw Cross all kinds of problems. By half time the Trojans appeared to be firmly in control of the game, however in the opening 20 minutes the visitors appeared to be holding their own after taking an early lead. The Sharks’ only try of the game came after 10 minutes of play when stand-off Andrew Fawkes took advantage of some poor defence by Thornhill to go over for an unconverted try. But after the initial opening 20 minutes Thornhill clicked into gear and took firm control of proceedings, and it was a precision pass

OPPORTUNITY: Sharks’ forward Liam Ellis looks to fend off Joel Gibson

from Gibson which put Bendikas away on the run. The centre sprinted clear and went over for a try, which Gibson converted. Thornhill then strung together an excellent attacking move, starting with Luke Haigh, who put Liam Morley away. The ball was worked out to Adam Johnson on the wing, but agonisingly the ball went to ground and a glorious scoring opportunity was lost. The next chance came when a long pass from Danny Ratcliffe found brother Sam on the wing, however the referee waved this score away as the pass was deemed forward. It was two quick-fire tries and a penalty goal in the run up to half time which proved to be key for the Trojans. The first of these came when Scott Green broke the line and managed to keep the play alive by passing the ball to Danny Ratcliffe, who then broke clear and covered over half the length of the field to score a converted try. The exciting Gibson then set off on a run to create another try for the Trojans. The full-back passed the ball to Bendikas, who linked up with Morley, and the Thornhill stand-off took the final pass to go over for a try. Gibson converted. On the stroke of half time Shaw Cross were penalised for holding down and this allowed Gibson to kick a penalty goal and give the Trojans a 20-4 interval lead. In the second half Thornhill reigned supreme, and Cross didn’t know how to handle the pressure. Good work by centre Ryan Fenton created an opening for winger Sam Ratcliffe to squeeze over for an unconverted try in the corner. Things then got worse for the Sharks when Bendikas booted the ball up the field and gave chase towards the in-goal area.

BRAGGING RIGHTS: Thornhill’s Jake Wilson worked tirelessly throughout However, as the try line came within reach, Shaw Cross full-back Sam Ottewell pulled the Trojans’ man back. The referee had no choice but to award a penalty try and send Ottewell to the bin for 10 minutes. Thornhill piled on the misery when Danny Ratcliffe picked up the ball and took play forward. He then kicked the ball and gave chase. A further boot forward from Ratcliffe saw the ball bounce between the posts and Gibson was

Celtic 14s share the spoils JUNIOR RUGBY LEAGUE Drighlington U14 Dewsbury Celtic U14

24 24

DEWSBURY CELTIC U14s travelled the short distance to Drighlington for a rearranged league fixture, with the sides battling out a 24-24 draw. A much improved and stronger Drighlington side started physically, and with greater purpose and intensity than Celtic. Within three minutes the home side had posted a try, following a break down the left and some questionable tackling out wide. The home side converted for an early 6-0 lead. Celtic had no time to reorganise before the hosts ran in another converted try minutes later. Drighlington defended hard, and even with possession, Celtic struggled to raise their intensity sufficiently to penetrate a solid Drig’ defence. A hard physical battle in the middle of the park give way as Celtic finally broke the deadlock on 18 minutes, when Lewis Teale broke free following a Celtic scrum on half way.

FIGHTING SPIRIT: Drighlington beat Celtic 14s convincingly earlier in the season Teale showed a clean pair of heels to go over for a try. Charlie Heaton goaled to make it 12-6. Five minutes later and Jacob Carr broke free for a lengthy carry up the left flank before being hauled down on the opposition ten. A lightening quick play of the ball released Heaton, who powered over under the sticks for a

deserved converted try. The home side hit back and added another converted try on the stroke of half time to go into the interval with a 18-12 lead. Minutes into the second period and after a period of sustained pressure in the opposition half, Carr went close under the sticks but was kept out and help up by a crowd of desperate defenders

on the line. Further pressure and increased intensity from Celtic paid dividends when Heaton went over for his second try, drawing the scores level at 18-18 with his own conversion. The game was set up for an exciting finale as the full-time whistle drew ever closer. Celtic were awarded a penalty for a high shot and Heaton duly obliged by kicking the two points to take a slender lead. The game heated up and tempers spilled over before Drig regained their lead at 24-20 with a converted try with only seconds remaining on the clock. After a quick restart, Celtic were awarded a penalty on their opposition’s metre line. Forward Carr ran onto the tap penalty from Cameron Berry, bulldozing over the line, spinning and grounding the ball despite the attentions of a wall of defenders. Heaton unfortunately missed the conversion, but an exciting game ended with both teams taking a hard-earned point.

David Jewitt

on hand to pounce and score the converted try. Another piece of brilliance from Danny Ratcliffe resulted in the final try of the game, as the half-back charged a kick down, gathered the ball, and sprinted nearly half the length of the field to score. Gibson rounded off the scoring with the conversion, as the Trojans ran out 42-4 winners. Local bragging rights were firmly with Thornhill, as the Trojans go on to play Dewsbury Moor in the final.

DEWSBURY BOSS Glenn Morrison is ready to put loyalty before ambition despite Wakefield’s determination to make him their next coach. Certainly his stock remains on the rise as the Rams shrugged off tiredness and the uncertainty caused by the Wildcats’ approach for Morrison to replace James Webster. “As a player I wanted to play at the highest level. And as a coach I want to get there as well,” said the Dewsbury boss. “But I have got to make sure I do it at the right time. I was captain at Wakefield and I love the club but I also have loyalty to Dewsbury and the players. “It is like a family we have developed and it would be hard to walk away. I am happy where we are at and the future we are trying to build. “People are talking but we are really enjoying ourselves. We are coming along from when I took over. “On and off the field Dewsbury is in a good place and hopefully we can keep the squad together and get as high as we can.” The Rams were never behind in the opening match on day two of the Summer Bash after Scott Hale put them in front with a 14th-minute touchdown. “Territorially, I thought we dominated,” said Bulldogs boss John Kear. “Credit Dewsbury’s defence, but we weren’t creative enough to get over the line. “We were too one dimensional in attack and it’s something we need to look at. “The massive effort at Widnes took a lot out of us but that doesn’t account for some of the decision making. “There were chances that, if we had backed our skill, we may have created a chance. Instead, we tried to muscle our way over and Dewsbury stood up to that.”

BATLEY BULLDOGS Tries: Day (20), A Brown (42) Goals: Leatherbarrow 2/3

IMPACT: Aaron Brown came off the bench to score the Rams’ second try just before half time Brown and Ainscough engineered the game’s first chance, but Wayne Reittie, scorer of two tries against Widnes a week earlier, had his hands on back to front and spilled the ball. And it was against the run of play when the Rams took the lead. Anthony Thackeray provided the pass and Scott Hale’s strong run took him under the posts to give Brett Seymour a simple conversion. But Batley deservedly levelled after 20 minutes thanks to a 50-metre solo effort from Brad Day. Alistair Leak’s slipped pass on halfway sent Day charging clear and he careered through Ryan Fieldhouse to touch down. Scott Leatherbarrow tagged on the extras. Joel Farrell’s arrival from the bench introduced greater zip going forward for the Rams.

Together with regular penalty awards, they regained the lead five minutes from half-time. Karl Pryce’s off-load as he crashed to the turf was picked up by Luke Adamson and Aaron Brown was on his shoulder to profit by the sticks. Seymour goaled to make it 12-6. Batley quickly set about re-dressing the balance when the contest resumed. Firstly, Reittie barged towards the line on the Bulldogs’ right, before play switched to the opposite flank. Leak’s kick to the corner was gathered by Alex Brown and as Jason Crookes inexplicably left his man to turn and spin clear, the winger strolled in at the corner. Concerns over offside were dispelled by the video referee and Batley were back within two after Leatherbarrow’s kick missed the mark.

Steve Horsfall Makali Aizue made mincemeat of Batley’s defence in the next Rams’ raid but the Papua New Guinean’s forward pass halted the move with a third try imminent. Batley, however, looked the more menacing side but it needed a penalty for offside to allow Leatherbarrow to boot them level with 17 minutes remaining. Dewsbury should have re-taken the lead minutes later but Seymour’s penalty attempt, awarded for holding down, hit the left-hand upright. Seymour’s embarrassment was spared when Pryce came up with his second try assist. But Dalton Grant’s touchdown owed everything to his superb one-handed finish. Faced with a far tougher kick, Seymour obliged from the touchline to

make it 18-12. Batley thought they had hit back through Matt Fozard but video replays showed he’d been held up by desperate defence. Day was similarly thwarted as the Rams survived. Thackeray’s first attempt to clinch victory via a drop goal was denied by a charge down. But the scrum half wasn’t to be denied and from inside the Bulldogs’ 20 he made no mistake.

BATLEY ON THE LOOK OUT Kear says Bulldogs are trying hard to bring in replacements By Joseph James Sports Reporter sport@thepressnews.co.uk

BATLEY begin a run of four tough games starting with Featherstone on Sunday at the Big Fellas Stadium, and Bulldogs’ boss John Kear says his players still have the confidence and selfbelief to get the victory. Kear watched his team lose for the ninth time in the league this season at Blackpool, after going down 19-12 at the hands of local rivals Dewsbury. And despite Batley holding much of the possession, Kear thinks his team need to do more with the ball. “When we were attacking, we showed no variation or execution. But what we shouldn’t forget is Dewsbury defended really well,” said the Bulldogs’ head coach. “All we can do is try and rectify this out on the practice field.” Batley have been forced to play with recognised hooker Alistair Leak in the halves, after Scott Leatherbarrow was missing early in the campaign. Leak has had to remain out of position and form a new partnership with Leatherbarrow after stand-off Cain Southernwood injured his ankle and is still sidelined. The Batley boss has only had his first-choice half-back duo a handful of times this season and says the club is doing everything to bring in

new recruits. “It isn’t through a lack of trying, of course we’ve been trying but we can’t just magic players out of nowhere. We’ve been in extensive talks with Super League clubs, Championship clubs and League One clubs,” said Kear, who is also one of the favourites to take over at Super League club Wakefield. “We’ve even tried to sign a player that recently retired, but it wasn’t possible. It's much more than just bringing a player to Batley, there’s a lot more to it than that. “Kevin Nicholas, Paul Harrison and I are looking to bring people in all the time. We’re still in extensive talks but at the end of the day these players belong to other clubs,’ he added. The ‘Dogs did manage to bring a familiar face back to the Fox’s Biscuit Stadium late last week in the shape of winger Alex Brown, who joined from Halifax on a month's loan, and made his fourth Batley debut at the Summer Bash. Brown is somewhat a hero in the town after scoring the winning try in the 2010 Northern Rail Cup final win at Bloomfield Road, and did manage to score in the same corner against the Rams last weekend but it proved to be in vain. Bulldogs chief Kear said the deal to bring in the former Hull KR and Huddersfield wing man allowed him to play Shaun Ainscough in the centres. Kear also confirmed Ayden Faal is out injured again, despite making a brief comeback from his shoulder problem earlier this month.

“The Alex Brown deal was in talks before Faal got injured again,” said Kear. “But fortunately for us Shaun Squires has recovered from his rib injury, and will be in contention for Sunday’s game. Often rugby league injuries happen with the forwards and that’s where our cover is at Batley.” With star man Johnny Campbell also out, Kear and his team travel to fifth-placed Featherstone expecting a tough game. “They will provide a stern test. Before the loss to Leigh they were coming into form and they have some top-quality players with the likes of Ryan Verlinden, Jy Hitchcox and Rene Maitua, who nearly beat us on his own at our place,” said Kear. “They pushed Catalans all the way in France and have players like Garreth Carvell coming back, so they have strong personnel.” After the Rovers clash, Batley have three-straight home games starting with Sheffield, before hosting London and Leigh, with the Bulldogs looking to get more league wins under their belt, after only managing four all season. Despite the losses, the side only have a minus 58 points difference in the Kingstone Press Championship table and Kear believes that shows how defensively strong is team are. “The figure shows we are competitive – but that doesn’t solve the problem. If we were winning by those tight deficits, we could be in the position Dewsbury are.”

Wanted man Morrison stays DESPITE Dewsbury Rams chairman Mark Sawyer publicly declaring the club had turned down an approach from Wakefield for coach Glenn Morrison, his name is still being linked with the job at The Rapid Solicitors Stadium. Morrison was captain of the Wildcats, and worked with the academy, before taking his first head coach position at the Rams. Sawyer confirmed he had been approached by Wakefield chief Michael Carter, but said the departure of Morrison at a crucial stage in the season was too much of a risk to take. “I can understand his interest but I declined his request, having decided it just wasn’t the right time for Dewsbury to make a change,” said Sawyer. “I didn’t speak to Glenn before making the decision but spoke to him straight after and he understands the situation. “He has aspirations to be a Super League coach but we’ve got an outside chance of making the top four, so it just wasn’t the right time to allow the coach to go.” The Dewsbury chairman also stated that another club came in for Morrison’s services prior to Wakefield’s approach but Sawyer said “this is first time a Super League club has been interested in Glenn”. The Rams’ coach didn’t wish to speak to The Press about the situation but spoke of the delight of his Dewsbury side currently sitting in the coveted fourth position in the Kingstone Press Championship, after beating Batley and

IN DEMAND: Morrison made the shortlist for the New Zealand job back in February

Morrison says it’s always good to get one over your local rivals. “We’ve got two league wins over them now, so that’s good but the performance was a little down,” said the Rams coach. “I think having three games in a week showed and there were too many handling

errors. But the whole Blackpool experience was great. I’ve been involved in the Super League magic weekend, so let’s just hope they keep growing the Championship one.” Despite the win, the Rams are still looking over their shoulders as they have played a game more than their top four rivals Featherstone and London. The Rams’ boss will be hoping to maintain their position when they host Doncaster on Sunday at the Tetley’s Stadium (3.00pm). The South Yorkshire club have their own coaching crisis after Paul Cooke resigned last week after failing to secure a single victory this season in the league. However Morrison said his side will be doing all they can to avoid being the first team to be beaten by the bottom club. “With every loss they have, they are closer to a win. We’ll be expecting a reaction because they came close against Hunslet last weekend,” he said. “They are a good club and have a good set of players. I know Carl Hall (Doncaster chief executive) well so I’ve been trying to help them out, but not too much this week. It’s a big game for us and we have to take everything as it comes,” Morrison added. The Dewsbury boss confirmed one player that could miss the game against The Dons is forward Paul Jackson, who suffered a back spasm last weekend, whilst the Rams chief said he would assess a number of other play-

ers ahead of the clash. Meanwhile as rumours surface about faces leaving the Rams, the club have brought in Nathan Conroy (pictured) from Bradford on a one-month loan deal and Morrison said he was excited with his new signing. “He’s a quality young player, and adds to the quality we already have. He’s just like Adam O’Brien when we brought him on dual-regristration. “We went into the game at the weekend with only one hooker. Ryan Wright has only just returned and Wayne Godwin isn’t in a position to play at the moment.” Matty Wildie is the Rams’ current hooker, since his switch from stand-off, with Tom Hemingway and James Delaney still sidelined through injury. Dewsbury recently welcomed Godwin back to club after his loan deal at Salford ended, while Joel Farrell came off the bench in Sunday’s win to play in the hooker role. Conroy has featured five times for James Lowes’ side this season, and is behind current Bradford’s first-choice number nine O’Brien in the Bulls’ pecking order.
