Popular attraction closing for refurb as bosses deny animal welfare worries

Exclusive by Zoe Shackleton UNDER-FIRE Heckmondwike animal park Ponderosa has announced it will close until March 2018 for refurbishment.

The news comes days after a series of complaints were made online which claimed that some of the attraction’s animals were housed in unsuitable conditions.

But Ponderosa officials say the revamp has been long-planned, is unconnected to the flurry of bad publicity, and stressed that animal welfare is a priority.

Refurbishment at the popular centre – which will include new water features and revamping the animal pens – will see it close on Monday October 30.

Andrew Williamson, who is working closely with owner Howard Cook MBE on renovating the site, said: “It was always a planned refurbishment, there’s some quite extensive plans afoot to revolutionise the farm.

“The plans have always been on for this year, it was a question of getting this season out of the way and giving us a chance to do things.”

Videos allegedly showing animals displaying ‘zoochosis’ – defined as abnormal or stereotypical behaviour in captive animals – were widely shared and commented on.

Kirsty Naylor, of Birkenshaw, wrote: “We went to Ponderosa for lunch at the restaurant and had a

peek around the enclosures.

“I was absolutely disgusted at the poor care provided for the more exotic species and feel something needs to be done quickly to stop the poor animals from suffering further.

“Most of the enclosures are way too small, overcrowded, poorly sanitised and extremely lacking in enrichment and stimulation.

“Many of the animals display stereotypical stressed behaviours, including repetitive pacing, calling, fighting and looking depressed.”

The 29-year-old went on to describe how she felt that animals had nothing to graze on with no staff to ensure the safety of animals.

“Myself and my sister found the whole experience extremely distressing and spoke to many others who felt the same,” Kirsty continued.

“I’m struggling to understand that this is a safe and legal way to keep animals and feel an animal welfare visit needs to be made.”

Mr Cook remains adamant that the zoo is up to standard.

He said: “Not only is Ponderosa about providing high standards of animal welfare and education, it is also a place for the community.

“We look after over 60 people a day with mild to severe learning disabilities, this allows them to gain training and gain social opportunities.

“There is a variety of roles these individuals fulfil, including working alongside staff members at the zoo itself, helping to build things for the enclosures and shredding recycled cardboard for animal bedding.

“This is an expensive programme to run, but the process of creating something and seeing the finished product is invaluable to that individual.

“A lot of this work is behind the scenes, we welcome anyone to come and see the positive changes Ponderosa has made to their lives, for a lot of them they live to do this.

“It is a real shame that some people can place us under a bad light when we help so many people, along with adhering to all inspections carried out by both Kirklees Council and internationally-accredited vets.”

While the whole centre is closing until around Easter next year, the Lakeside Restaurant at the bottom of the site will remain open throughout.

“Unfortunately these sorts of things happen at zoos and farms – people have different opinions on animal welfare,” admitted Mr Williamson.

“The only thing I would say is that the team love the animals, they’re as passionate about the animals as anybody so it’s been very difficult for them over the last couple of days for this information to come out in this light.

“It’s not because the pens are not large enough or any of that, it’s general wear and tear. It requires investment. Nobody’s making the assumption that the pens are the wrong shape or size – the inspections always say that it’s perfect.

“It’s not just about being a zoo where people come and have a look at animals, it’s about interaction. It should be a success story and a place that is lauded, not necessarily pulled apart and criticised for a certain aspect.”

A spokesman for Kirklees Council said: “We visited Ponderosa in June 2017 with an appointed Secretary of State vet to undertake a special inspection of the zoo.

Cops raid wrong home

By Staff Reporters A MAN is considering taking legal action against the police after armed officers mistakenly raided his house.

Armed police spent four hours at Zaffar Iqbal’s Dewsbury home last Thursday night before admitting they had got the wrong address.

Mr Iqbal’s wife Nasreen was at home with their two teenage children when police arrived shouting at her to open the door.

She rang her husband, who had been out with a friend, and he returned to see several police cars and armed officers outside his property on Quarry Road, Westtown.

Mr Iqbal said: “I got inside and my wife was absolutely shaking like a leaf and my daughter was totally in tears.

“I’m not going to rest until I get these people brought to account.”

West Yorkshire Police said it was carrying out a planned operation in the Ravensthorpe area in relation to drugs and firearms offences.

They said they were acting on intelligence that there was a firearm present at Mr Iqbal’s address but “it was quickly established” there was not, and “further enquiries were conducted at a nearby address”.

Four men aged 25, 27, 28 and 31 were arrested following a further raid. Two vehicles were stopped and further searches were conducted on the same road.

Class A drugs, cash and firearms were seized, with the four men still in custody being questioned over possession of firearms and drug offences.

Enquiries remain ongoing.

Network Rail say the work is unavoidable but will improve future services.

NORTH KIRKLEES: Police joined forces with other agencies for a day of action to mark Anti-Slavery Day. On Wednesday officers visited addresses in Batley, Dewsbury, Mirfield and Ossett, gaining intelligence as well as raising awareness about human trafficking. Trading Standards, the Gangmasters & Local Abuse Authority, Kirklees officials, HMRC and Immigration Intelligence were also involved.

Det Chief Insp Tony Nicholson, of Kirklees CID, said: “Human trafficking is a hidden crime and awareness events such as these help to educate the public about how they can help us to tackle it, as well as the sexual exploitation of victims.”

Lots on at church MIRFIELD: A series of events are being held at St Mary’s Church and Community Centre over the next month.

This Monday, October 23, there is a free family fun afternoon at the community centre on Church Lane from 1.30pm-4.30pm.

On Sunday November 19 the centre is hosting a children’s workshop and party from 2pm-4pm. There will also be an organ recital at the church from 3pm on Saturday November 11.

CCG going public

No railway services next weekend RAILWAY stations in the district are set to close next weekend.

Improvement work to signalling systems will be taking place on Saturday October 28 and Sunday October 29.

Passengers are advised to check before they travel as the Huddersfield and Dewsbury stations will be closed, with no services in or out of them.

TransPennine Express said it was not running any trains between Manchester and Leeds because of the work, and ALL local stations on the line – including Batley, Ravensthorpe and Mirfield – will be affected.

TPE and Northern Rail will operate up to 25 buses per hour to keep passengers moving between stations on the route.

A Network Rail spokesman said: “There will be bus replacement services operating from Dewsbury, Mirfield, Ravensthorpe, Batley, Morley and Cottingley.”

Old signalling technology is being ‘recontrolled’ from local line-side signal boxes to a Rail Operating Centre in York.

Nine years for sex abuse of girls

A MAN who denied the historic sexual abuse of two young girls has been jailed for nine years.

Heckmondwike man Richard Prendergast was found guilty of 11 counts of sexual abuse dating back 25 years. The 45year-old, of Westfield Road, denied the charges at Leeds Crown Court.

He was also put on the sex offender’s register for life.

Kirklees Safeguarding Unit officer Paul Greatorex said: “I would

Despite the couple wanting to restore their relationship, Radcliffe pleaded guilty to breaching the order between October 6 and 15 and was jailed for six weeks. He must also pay a surcharge of £115.

Batley traffic chaos ROADWORKS are set to start on part of Bradford Road in Batley today (Friday).

Yorkshire Water are repairing a large sewer that runs under the main road, with work taking place near the Tesco Express store. Temporary traffic lights will be in place while the work – set to last for two weeks – is carried out. It is being done to reduce the risk of sewer flooding and pollution to nearby watercourses.

Yorkshire Water project manager Andrew McKinley said: “We understand this is a very busy road which is why we have to work at night, at weekends and during the school halfterm holidays. We want to assure road users and local residents and businesses that we’ll do everything we can to keep disruption to a minimum. We would like to apologise for any inconvenience caused.”

Two-way temporary traffic lights will be in place from 7pm Friday, from the junction with Caledonia Road to the Bridge Street junction.

Boundary blow to MPs THE district’s MPs have hit out over the latest proposed changes to constituency boundaries.

The Boundary Commission for England this week revealed revised proposals setting out new possible constituencies in Yorkshire and the Humber.

Under the plans Batley & Spen would be abolished and split into two, while the Dewsbury constituency would remain largely unchanged.

The existing Bradford wards of Wyke and Tong would become part of a new ‘Bradford South East and Spen’ constituency which would include Birstall and Birkenshaw, Cleckheaton, Heckmondwike, and Liversedge and Gomersal.

The Batley wards (East and West) would become part of a

‘Batley and Morley’ constituency.

The number of seats in Yorkshire and the Humber has to reduce from 54 to 50, under parliamentary changes.

“As I’ve said before, these plans are unfair, undemocratic and unacceptable – they need to be updated to include an estimated two million missing voters,” said Dewsbury MP Paula Sherriff.

“I also continue to question the decision to reduce the number of MPs who are elected by residents to represent their local areas, while the unelected House of Lords continues to grow.”

However Ms Sherriff claimed opposition will see the changes shot down.

“It now seems to be unlikely these proposals will go ahead as

many Tories and the DUP MPs that prop up their government are also opposed to them. The government should ditch these plans and save any further waste of public money,” she said.

A previous report in October 2016 set out initial plans for constituency changes.

Despite protests from constituents and affected politicians, commissioners decided not to make any changes to the original plans that could see Batley effectively split in half.

The report said the Conservative Party objected to the changes but that the requirements for the Bradford and Spen element meant that the new Batley and Morley seat was also a must.

Batley & Spen Labour MP

Tracy Brabin added: “The supposed purpose of the boundary review is to reduce the number of Members of Parliament to bring down the cost of politics.

“But bear in mind that since this process started, hundreds of unelected Lords have been created while the surgeries and casework of MPs increases, making the justification for the process farcical.

“I’m not opposed to boundary changes in principle, I would just like to see it without clear political intent from the Conservative Party.”

A consultation is now open until March 27 and changes could still be made, with final proposals due in October 2018.

Cadets serve up a Macmillan treat MIRFIELD Air Cadets baked their way to raising £126 for the Macmillan coffee ‘morning’ charity during one of their evening meetings.

Civilian instructor Charlotte Stringer and other staff, along with members of the squadron committee and the cadets themselves, provided the cakes.

Flight Lieutenant Peter Doubell said: “It is so good to be able to offer some contribution to such a worthwhile cause as Macmillan Cancer Support, and it is a small thank you for the support they give to so many others in society.”

Meanwhile, three cadets gained their bronze gliding wings at RAF Topcliffe in North Yorkshire.

Bob Wells, of Cleckheaton, will be honoured at the Kirklees District Commander’s Awards next year.

The 71-year-old’s commendation comes after he stepped in to help a security man who was being attacked by two men robbing the Cleckheaton branch of Lloyds on October 25 last year.

The two men assaulted the guard, who was carrying several thousands of pounds in cash into the Albion Street bank, and stole the money before fleeing in a blue Mini waiting outside the building.

was my husband. Your bravery and upstanding citizenship is very much appreciated.

“We hope you have a great night at the awards ceremony in the new year. Once again many thanks and our best wishes.”

Mr Wells also wanted to thank the police officer who looked after him following the incident.

He said: “He even rang me on my birthday to wish me a happy birthday!”

Daylight hammer robbery in town DEWSBURY: A woman was threatened with a hammer in a robbery in the town centre.

The incident occurred last Wednesday between 3pm and 3.30pm, when the victim was outside the Poundland store in the Princess of Wales shopping precinct.

She felt a pull on her handbag and saw a woman trying to steal from it. The 21-yearold was then confronted by a man who threatened her with a hammer, demanded her phone and then made off with her bag.

The female was described as about 20 years old, 5ft 5ins tall, of skinny build with dark brown shoulder-length hair. The man was about 30, 5ft 9ins, clean shaven with dark short hair. Anyone with information should call 101 referencing 13170472098.

Paedophile back in prison A MAN living at a Dewsbury hostel that houses sex offenders has been jailed for another 18 months after being caught talking to a teenage girl online.

David Allen Gordon had only been out of prison for a month for previous sexual offences before he was found out by a paedophile vigilante group.

Batley ice cream firm in meltdown after goods seized A BATLEY ice cream factory has been shut down by environmental health inspectors.

Last Sunday Kirklees Council’s food safety team seized products from Zak’s Ices, on Belle Vue Street, because the premises were unregistered and unapproved to manufacture ice cream.

On Monday the owner of the business, 56year-old Zakir Shaikh, appeared at Kirklees Magistrates Court.

The court heard that Mr Shaikh had set up the business in 2001 but had since moved to new premises which had not been licenced.

Consequently the food he was producing had not been tested to see if it was fit for human consumption.

Chairman of the bench Wayne Perriman ordered the ice cream to be disposed of, as well as making Mr Shaikh pay £400 to cover council costs.

Mr Shaikh is now working with Kirklees to make an application for the business to be officially approved.

Batley Carr, Dewsbury, started chatting to what he thought was a 15year-old girl on social media.

But it was actually a ruse being staged by a ‘Parents Against Paedophiles’ activist posing as the teenager.

Leeds Crown Court heard that the 48year-old told the girl ‘Jodie Shaw’ that he had already been in prison for sexual activity with a 14-

year-old girl and that he should not be talking to her.

Gordon also sent her various messages asking her what she was doing and offered to wash her back when she showered.

He was arrested on August 27 and appeared at Leeds Crown Court, where he admitted to breaching his Sexual Offences Prevention Order and was jailed for 18 months.

Or worse.

I don’t think he’s that way inclined. I do worry slightly about her though – and I find it depressing that beautiful young women especially are defacing themselves wholesale, in the name of ‘fashion’.

It might have had the desired effect of attracting attention to their musclebound arms – but it also suggested that if brains were on the outside, you could colour theirs in 30 seconds.

But they’ve now transmuted onto the arms, chests, backs, necks and legs of half of the under-30s in Christendom.

What I really don’t understand, and which seems incredibly popular right now amongst young women, are sporadic, unrelated dabs of ‘body art’ here, there and everywhere, up and down the nearest limb that comes to hand.

I have a serious question – who and what are they for?

To express undying love for that cad you had a knee trembler round back of the nightclub with, but who hasn’t rung you for a few weeks?

Oops on that one, eh!

This is especially so of those ubiquitous ‘tramp stamps’ across the top of women’s buttocks. At the risk of being a tad indelicate, is it to distract your chap from the acne on your upper back girls? Or the fact you may have nits?

Most of these odd symbols dotted on arms, shoulders and calves are beyond cryptic anyway but who, really, meets a young lady on a night out and says: “Hi, my name is Justin, I really like that rose, motorbike and map of Africa on your arm, while that tarantula on your lower belly is so cool. Sorry? That’s not Africa it’s a birthmark?

And that isn’t a tarantula, you just need a trim?”

Before you’ve even told her – or noticed – that she has lovely eyes and a nice smile, she’s run off in floods of tears to console herself with a bad drawing of Justin Bieber on her right thigh (she already has Taylor Swift on the left).

And what I really, really can’t understand, is why someone hasn’t invented authentic-looking tats that can be removed painlessly after a month or year or two, without requiring half your body to be burnt away.

There’s nothing in our lives from cars, houses and clothes, to even family, friends and favourite foreign holidays, that we don’t change our mind on.

So sorry, I just don’t get this most permanent of passions for disfigurement.

And before any smart alecs remind me, at least my legacy of youthful idiocy is located somewhere the sun never shines…

Idiot’s MP Tracy visits PPG lorry stunt

BATLEY & SPEN MP Tracy Brabin praised the work of a global paint manufacturing company after a colourful visit.

Birstall-based PPG gave the Labour MP a tour of the business and she said: “Talking to staff, many of whom have been there for decades – always a good sign – I could see PPG is a fine employer investing in staff wellbeing and personal development.

“I was heartened to see many women on the factory floor as well as in management, and I know the company is committed to representing our diverse community at every level.”

Mum’s AA ordeal A MAN jumped and clung onto the back of a lorry as it sped down a busy road in Mirfield.

The anonymous thrill-seeker was filmed by a car that was following the truck down the A62 Leeds Road last Friday.

Identified only as ‘Floss the Boss’ in the video posted on social media, the man held onto the back of the vehicle until he jumped off and tumbled near the White Gate pub at the junction with Far Common Road.

The car then stopped and the people filming told ‘Floss’ to get in with them. It is unclear whether he suffered any injuries.

A MOTHER has slammed a breakdown company after she was left stranded with three children when they failed to pick her up for eight hours.

Jennifer Williams, of Mirfield, was taking her 15-year-old daughter Libby and two friends to a concert in Manchester on Saturday night when her Alfa Romeo broke down on the M62.

The 38-year-old rang breakdown cover provider the AA at around 7pm, but said they did not recover her vehicle until 3am the following morning.

“I just don’t get how it can take so long to respond to a lone female with three kids, it just doesn’t make any sense,” said Mrs Wiliams.

“It’s disappointing enough that the kids missed the concert but they were so well behaved and so gracious.

Their parents were absolutely frantic.

“I’m a female on her own with three 15-year-old children on one of the busiest motorways in the north of the UK and to be in that position alone for so long – I need an answer,

I need to know why,” she added.

Mrs Williams made several phone calls to the AA throughout the night and was escorted off the motorway at around 9pm to a nearby service station, but she was left again until an AA responder arrived to assist with the breakdown fault an hour and 40 minutes later.

The AA then said they could not take Mrs Williams home because her membership did not cover for this service, and she ended up adding an extra £7.49 to her monthly payment so that she could be taken back to Mirfield.

Mrs Williams said she was finally recovered at 3.06am and did not arrive home until 4.24am, despite the AA stating otherwise.

She added: “I am extremely disappointed in the service provided, allowing a lone female with three children to be placed in such a dangerous and vulnerable position for so long is unacceptable.

“The children missed their concert at Manchester Apollo but had the AA provided an alternative solution and arranged recovery home sooner, we

may have found another way.”

A spokesman for the AA said: “I am very sorry to hear that your reader and our member is unhappy with the service she received during her recent breakdown.”

He added that the call was received at 7.07pm and allocated to an AA garage agent partner who arrived at 8.36pm and took Mrs Williams and the youngsters to safety.

“At 10.38pm the patrol arrived at the services. He did everything he could to try to get Mrs Williams’s vehicle going again and spent more than an hour attending to the breakdown. Unfortunately it became apparent that he could not repair the vehicle and so requested recovery at 11.47pm.

“Recovery did ultimately arrive on scene at 1.40am to recover the member home, but we recognise that there was a delay between the recovery being requested and arriving on scene. We sincerely apologise for the delay Mrs Williams experienced.”

The AA have since refunded Mrs Williams £99 and are sending the children some vouchers in the post.

BATLEY: A 42-year-old man was robbed at knifepoint.

The victim was approached by two men on Halifax Road at around 12.30am on Sunday, October 8, when one of them threatened him with a knife before both made off with a large amount of cash in a white bag.

The suspects – who are described as white males, of slim build and wearing dark clothing with hoods up – fled in a vehicle on nearby Common Road.

The victim was not injured during the incident, but the money stolen was the takings from a local business.

Anyone who has information or saw anything suspicious in the area is asked to contact Kirklees District CID via 101 quoting 13170465727.

Flu jabs available NORTH KIRKLEES: Health bosses are urging residents to take up the offer of a free flu jab.

Public Health England and the NHS have launched their Stay Well This Winter campaign, which offers a flu vaccination to all eligible people nationwide.

Residents in North Kirklees who are the most vulnerable to flu are being advised to sign up for the vaccine ahead of winter.

Dr David Kelly, chairman of NHS North Kirklees CCG and a local GP, said: “If you are eligible for the flu vaccine get it now – it’s free because you need it. Contact your GP, pharmacist or midwife to get the flu jab.”

Sports centre changes should be embraced I read with interest last week your story on the changes due to take place at Batley Sports Centre.

Whilst I understand the tennis club members’ noses being put out of joint at the loss of a couple of courts, do they not see the benefits the wider community could get from the new facilities?

An obstacle course and soft play area could attract new folk to come and use the centre, keeping more people fit and securing the future of the whole place.

Huddersfield Clinical Commissioning Group’s meeting on Wednesday, October 11, when he was the only member of the governing body to refuse to support the Full Business Case for the Huddersfield Royal Infirmary reconfiguration plans.

He explained that GPs and community health services did not have enough staff or resources to take on extra patients that would be created by closing the infirmary and replacing it with a 64-bed site at Acre Mills.

To reduce acute and emergency medical admissions as planned, Greater Huddersfield and Calderdale Clinical Commissioning Groups would have to be in the top 25 per cent of CCGs, which Dr Ashraf said was unlikely.

The target is to reduce acute and emergency medical admissions by 3.5-4.5 per cent each year for five years.

But over the last five years Greater Huddersfield’s reduction has only been 1.7 per cent, and Calderdale has increased 0.9 per cent.

Dr Ashraf felt it was “a big risk” to expect GPs and community nurses to be able to pick up the extra workload or have the skills to do so when GPs are leaving in droves, and the plan’s targets were “aspirational” so “not certain”, both in reducing hospital admissions and in the financial forecasts.

I applaud Dr Ashraf and would ask others, who ignored his comments and supported the plans, despite their responsibilities to make sure Kirklees people’s health care needs are met, how they can sleep at night?

week’s letter to the Forum would suggest a complete lack of enforcement on the part of the planning and building regulators.

If so, it seems a little unfair on those who have paid for plans and building control to ensure everything is not only safe but does not impact the immediate locality.

Why is there a planning committee if they don’t serve the local community?

A big thank you for concert From: Bill Robinson, local resident A concert at Dewsbury Minster last Friday evening freely was given by the choir of Aysgarth School.

The evening was to celebrate the re -ordering of the worship area and to celebrate 10 years since the new organ was installed by Malcolm Spink.

The evening began with everyone joining in song with the hymn Jerusalem, after which the audience sat back and enjoyed a very mixed programme by the choir of 13-year-olds and under.

The highlights of the evening were a solo organ piece, Toccata & Fugue in D Minor BWV565 by Johann Sebastian Bach, played from memory without the aid of printed music by a 13-yearold, a piano solo by a 12-yearold, a solo by a 13-year-old playing the trumpet voluntary and a Pirates of the Caribbean piano solo by a 12year-old.

It was a wonderful evening of music by a very talented choir and Matthew Atherton, director of music and organist at the school.

It would be only right to thank all those responsible for this special event in the town.

Shawn’s great idea honoured

By David Bentley A FUNERAL director from Cleckheaton has been honoured after helping to establish a national scheme that has raised more than £145,000 for the Royal British Legion.

Shawn Peel, from David Butterfield Independent Family Funeral Directors, worked closely with funeral plan company Golden Charter and the Royal British Legion to establish a fundraising program.

Customers at a funeral director can now indicate that they would like their policy to be ‘badged’ with the famous RBL poppy, and a £25 donation is made to the legion for each plan sold.

After a year in development, the scheme looks set to raise up to £250,000 in its first 12 months.

Spenborough RBL branch member Shawn, who before joining his father-in-law’s funeral firm was an RAF air reconnaissance and intelligence photographer, initially approached Golden Charter’s Malcolm Flanders with his idea.

He also set up a meeting between the RBL and the funeral plan firm at the Legion’s HQ in London, where his plan was given the thumbs-up.

Funeral plans are pre-paid schemes that

allow people to pay for bereavement costs in advance.

If it continues long-term it could potentially raise millions of pounds for the charity, which helps former and current service personnel and their families.

Shawn, 46, of Roberttown, was honoured when Malcolm Flanders came to the region on October 5 to present him with a special recognition award from Golden Charter.

He said: “This partnership means a lot to me. Often when people think of the Royal British Legion they think of older veterans, but we have young people coming back with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and other issues. They need our support.

“However, there is a belief that the Royal British Legion only works once a year with the Poppy Appeal. With Golden Charter supporting it all year, we can promote their excellent work.”

Shawn is the Poppy Appeal co-ordinator for Littletown and Liversedge and added: “I am incredibly proud of the award, it is nice to be recognised.”

A spokesman for the Royal British Legion said: “Through this partnership with Golden Charter we hope to continue to keep alive the memory of the fallen in our Armed Forces community and support the future of the living.”

Scheme launched A NEW community minibus scheme was launched in Batley this week.

JoinBookDrive is a webbased system introduced by Community Transport Calderdale (CTC), and means local groups can now register to use the service and book out a minibus online.

It was launched on Monday at the Indian Muslim Welfare Society premises on Track Road, where the minibus will

be based.

A number of North Kirklees councillors and other community activists attended the event.

After an eligibility test a group wanting to hire the minibus will receive a welcome pack which includes a smart card for each driver on the system.

The card will let users access the minibus with a hassle-free pick-up and dropoff.

Pam Lonsdale, marketing manager for CTC, said: “Through introducing JoinBookDrive to the area we hope to bring a cost-effective transport solution for a number of organisations.

“This project is the catalyst for expanding our services and we are busy talking to prospective partners about future projects.”

Pamela’s memory spurs cyclists on

Half term activity CLECKHEATON: A special week of sporting activities to keep kids entertained through half term has been organised.

Oakwell drama airs NORTH KIRKLEES: A BBC drama filmed at Oakwell Hall telling the inside story of the Gunpowder Plot hits screens tomorrow (Saturday). Gunpowder stars Kit Harington alongside Liv Tyler and Mark Gatiss, on BBC One at 9.10pm. The three-part thriller was filmed in several locations across Yorkshire including Oakwell in Birstall. Harington and Tyler filmed at the 16th-century manor house using the Great Hall as a backdrop.

TORRENTIAL rain didn’t dampen the spirits of a father and daughter cycling duo who completed a gruelling ride to raise funds for a cancer charity.

Darren and Eve Halmshaw, of Mirfield, plus a group of supporters, cycled from the town’s library up to Holme Moss and back again.

The pair have so far raised almost £5,000 from the ride for Ovarian Cancer Action, a charity which supported Darren’s wife and Eve’s mum while she suffered a 10-year battle with ovarian cancer.

Pamela Halmshaw was just 53 when she died on October 27 last year after having battled the disease since 2006, and despite “biblical weather” it was Pamela’s memory that kept the pair going.

“We rode in the most hor-

rendous weather – wind and rain – it was strong, let’s put it that way!”, said Darren.

“But you just think, we’re doing this for Pamela, for Pamela’s memory and ovarian cancer, and it’s one day of pain for a good cause.

“We all got to the top, it was blowing a gale but we did it.”

Darren, 52, and 15-year-old Eve were joined by 14 other cyclists and were waved off

by Mirfield’s Tour de France legend Brian Robinson.

“The comradeship was amazing, we all knew what we were there for,” Darren added.

“Out of something so sad and hard that we had last year, to be able to do the bike ride with my friends and family was amazing.

“I’ve been very humbled

by the experience – to support us in such an amazing thing we’ve done has just been unbelievable.

“I hope nobody else has to experience what we’ve had to in the last 12 months but we’ve gone through it and we’re coming out of that dark hole now.

“And it’s just amazing that people have supported us the way they have and I’m just genuinely humbled by it all.”

With money donated through the JustGiving page set up by Darren, and cash coming from various friends and family members along with a generous £1,000 donation, Darren and Eve have raised £4,725 for the charity.

Acorn kids put on a show for hospice

MEMBERS of Dewsbury-based Acorn Youth Theatre Company will be performing their ‘Revolting Children’ cabaret show at Batley Town Hall next week in aid of the Forget Me Not Children’s Hospice. The young cast will treat the audience to extracts from Matilda, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Billy Elliot and other famous shows.

Acorn founders Cev and Sarah Barker said: “We were approached by Forget Me Not to consider fundraising for them and after a visit to the hospice with some of our members, our young performers have been excited to do so.

“We did a bucket collection during our last production of West Side Story and some of our older male members and some dads will be having their legs waxed later this year!”

Harry’s arena trek to support charity

By Zoe Shackleton A THORNHILL man who witnessed the Manchester Arena bomb attack is heading back to the venue on a fundraising bike ride It will be the first time Harry Shillito has returned to the scene of the terrorist massacre in May. The 21-year-old is gearing up for the challenge which will see him cycle around 50 miles from Dewsbury Railway Station to the arena next January, raising money for the ‘We Love Manchester’ charity which was set up after the suicide bombing.

Since the attack on May 22 – which claimed the lives of 23 people at an Ariana Grande concert – Harry has struggled to come to terms with what happened.

He was at the gig with his girlfriend Chloe and described it at the time as

being “like a horror film.”

While Harry, an engineer with Arriva Buses, said the events of that night still play on his mind he admitted he feels the need to go back.

“I’m nervous and on edge, but I think I need to do it. It should hopefully make me feel a bit better,” said Harry. “I think it’ll test me, it’ll be challenging.”

So far, he has raised over £200 and is hoping to hit his target of £2,000 to contribute towards a permanent memorial for the victims.

Roads blitz success POLICE have hailed a recent traffic operation to tackle anti-social behaviour a success.

Taking to Dewsbury’s roads as part of a planned operation to improve driving standards and tackle anti-social behaviour, officers stopped and searched vehicles, some of which were inspected at a garage on George Street.

Officers also used automatic number plate recognition technology to help detect and reduce crime.

On the evening of Friday October 6 officers handed out five immediate suspensions and three delayed suspensions, stopped four vehicles for traffic offences and two for defects.

PC Leon Stansfield of Kirklees District Police said: “Our aim with this operation was to tackle offences

on the district’s roads, along with anti-social behaviour and ultimately deny criminals the use of the roads.

“The results for the two-day operation have been brilliant. The majority of vehicles which were checked were taxis or licensed hire vehicles with a number of other vehicles stopped on the roadside.

“We have run similar operations throughout Kirklees over the past few months, which have resulted in vehicles being seized and making our district’s road safer.

“I hope residents are encouraged that we take all reports of antisocial use of the roads seriously and are working closely with partner agencies to tackle this issue in Kirklees.”

MPs back bill to tackle child hunger THE DISTRICT’s two MPs have pledged their support for a parliamentary bill that has been introduced to stop children going hungry through the school holidays.

Thousands of children are said to be at risk of going hungry because families who are entitled to free school meals during term time are struggling to afford food during the breaks.

Both Dewsbury and Batley & Spen MPs Paula Sherriff and Tracy Brabin have pledged their support.

The bill was formally introduced in parliament last month.

Ms Brabin said: “The rise in holiday hunger is shameful.

“In one of the wealthiest countries in the world, children suffering from hunger shouldn’t be accepted in 2017.”

Miss Sherriff added: “It is unacceptable that so many children are at risk of going hungry in our community.

“Child poverty is at a seven-year high and wages are falling, leaving working families

worse off. Every child deserves to be fed every day.”

The proposed School Holidays (Meals and Activities) Bill could see the UK government put measures in place to try and tackle holiday hunger – if it is approved.

The bill is due to debated in the House of Commons in January and its text says it would “require local authorities to facilitate the delivery of programmes that provide free meals and activities for children during school holidays.”

Poll on Thursday VOTERS in the Batley East ward will go to the polls on Thursday to elect a new councillor.

A by-election to replace Amanda Stubley, whose seat was declared vacant after she didn’t attend meetings, is being contested by five candidates.

Labour are once again heavy favourites to claim the seat and will be represented by Habiban Zaman, a Batley Carr-born community worker.

The other candidates are Paul Young (Conservative), Jon Bloom (Lib Dem), David Smith (Green Party) and Aleks Lukic (Heavy Woollen District Independents).

Former Labour councillor Amanda Stubley failed to attend council meetings for six months, meaning she automatically forfeited her seat.

The 46-year-old mother-of-two took office in 2011 and was last elected in May 2015 with a sizeable majority.

She was suspended by the regional Labour Party in November 2016 following a clash with protesters in Batley Market Place, after which she decided to cut all her ties with the party.

Following her suspension, the former tenants’ campaigner tried to set up a new ‘Batley Independents’ political group and sat as an independent councillor before officially losing her seat last month.

Join the great Kirklees bake-off ASPIRING cooks are being encouraged to don their aprons for next year’s Young Chef of the Year competition.

Kirklees College’s annual bake-off is returning for its fifth year, and anyone in school years 9-11 can take part.

The two semi-finals of the competition will take place in April and May and the final will

be on June 19.

Kirklees College is already taking entries.

Last year’s competition was won by Amelia Garbutt - a student at Salendine Nook High School - who made creme brulee with raspberry coulis and a tuille stack.

Judge Sally Russum said: “It’s a great competition. The

young chefs are of such a high standard and show impressive levels of professionalism and creativity in their desserts.

“It is a pleasure to support both the young people and the college.”

CREATIVE artists who are taking part in a special ‘training school’ have revealed details of their final production.

An evening performance of ‘The Togethering’ is to be held in Dewsbury town centre next week featuring 25 people who have been attending the Make It Happen training school.

They will create a magical show with music, shadow puppetry, fire-drawings and story-telling in the town’s central pedestrian area.

The intensive course has been held in Dewsbury over six days, culminating in ‘The Togethering’ on Wednesday October 25 at 6.30pm.

Artist and illustrator Julia Cukerman, 34, who lives in Mirfield, is one of the participants.

She said: “I am learning lots about using art in performance and it is great to make new contacts for the future and learn how to work together as a team.”

Dewsbury-based Landscape designer Waheeda Kothidwala, 39, is also an artist.

“The course is a new experience with a new medium I have never worked with,” she said.

“I am really enjoying working with shadow puppets and this might be a way for my to lift my stories from my sketch book and do the exhibition I always wanted to do.

“Learning about production will help me in future and has given me confidence.

“I hope that Dewsbury and its people will find its spark again, there is so much potential here but people have lost their connection to the town. The people need to feel proud of their town and themselves again.”

Donna Ramsden, 41, from Birstall, said:

“Learning how to make fire drawings has been amazing. Most of all, it is giving me confidence to believe I can do it.

“I am looking forward to working with others and learning how to collaborate, instead of trying to do everything myself.”

The fine art student and Batley Festival committee member added: “This will bring a wonderful event to Dewsbury and I hope it will help people to understand the town where they live a bit more.”

The special training scheme to gain skills in staging outdoor arts events is being hosted

by Walk the Plank, one of the UK’s leading outdoors arts companies and Creative Scene, an Arts Council England-funded project to bring ‘the arts’ to Dewsbury, Batley and Spen.

They are learning about putting on arts events in public places like parks, town centres and other non-traditional performance locations.

Simon Thirkill, 49, who is the organiser of the HeckmondLIGHT switch-on event and runs the Blue Moon café in the town, said: “The things I am learning are most definitely relevant for my future plans, especially fire, lights and lanterns.

“The Togethering event will give the community the opportunity to come together and share, talk, and learn about each other building an annual event and a stronger more connected community.”

Nancy Barrett, director of Creative Scene, said: “It is suitable for all ages, so come along and share the experience. The town and its people deserve something special and we hope this will be the start of an annual Togethering event.”

Latest rambles RAMBLERS: A group of 22 Dewsbury & District ramblers walked from Apperley Bridge last Wednesday, along the River Aire towards Calverly Bridge and back down the Leeds and Liverpool Canal.

An 11-mile walk saw the rambling club set off from Clay House, visiting Norland Moor and Ripponden Triangle along the way.

Tomorrow (Sat), there is a walk planned in the Mirfield area. Walkers are asked to meet Tony Glover at Link Road in Dewsbury at 9.30am, or Mirfield Library car park at 10am.

Another walk will take place on Wednesday (October 25) at Wentworth Park, meeting Margaret Chamberlain at 10.30am. Ramblers are advised to park on Cortworth Lane.

A PROFESSIONAL theatre show for children will be performed in the heart of communities across Dewsbury, Batley and Mirfield during half-term.

HISTORY and cross-country tracks are two basic interests of Milo Milinkov, who is the speaker at next Monday’s meeting of Batley History Group.

He will share his joint interests in his talk, titled ‘The Freedom Trail’, which is about the people who attempted to escape from Nazioccupied European countries during the Second World War. He points out that it was not only established enemies such as soldiers who had to escape from Europe but also various sections of society such as Jews, gypsies and other opponents who posed a threat to the Nazi regime.

Barnsley-based Milo is well fitted for investigating such encounters as he has served in various sections of the police – the fraud squad, CID and investigations into missing people and terrorist threats - during a lengthy police service.

And his investigations into the way resistors were able to create and protect such freedom trails has not only taken a good part of his 12-year retirement but has also proven beneficial to the British Legion.

In walking on Freedom Trails such as the one which crosses the Pyrenees, Milo has raised nearly £6,000 for RBL projects.

The meeting at Batley Town Hall starts at 7.30pm.

Members of the History Group are asked to donate £2 towards the costs while non-

members can enjoy the talk and some refreshments for £4.

Terrifically terrifying WITH Halloween just around the corner, children can make skeletons, spiders and other things that go bump in the night at Bagshaw Museum in Batley this October half-term.

Grumbleweeds stars Robin and James celebrate 50 years of laughter with new UK show C AN you believe that The Grumbleweeds have been part of the UK comedy scene since the 1960s? From TV to radio, pantomime, summer season, theatre and cabaret, unforgettable characters weave their way through their act, interlaced with fresh routines and impressions.

I was lucky enough to meet both Robin and James as they appeared in London for an interview at Westminster Live.

Still as funny as ever and packing theatres across the UK, do check them out because seriously they are just very funny, and we all need a laugh in our lives, right? Don’t grumble, just go and see the Grumbleweeds instead...

STRICTLY Come Dancing star Brian Conley has said he wants to stay in the competition for “as long as possible”.

He tells me: “It’s hard work but also a great challenge, I never thought I would be able to do anything like they are teaching me to do. So yes it’s good fun, but my feet are killing me Ann, honestly.”

DAME DIANA RIGG plays the Queen’s Mistress of the Robes in hit period drama Victoria.

She tells me, laughing: “Getting in and out of horsedrawn carriages at my age!

OSSETT Seconds continued their promising start in the Yorkshire Merit League as they produced a second-half fightback against Morley Thirds.

Morley took the lead with the game’s opening try before Ossett hit the front with a penalty try.

Tom Tatts was pulled back in the act of scoring after chasing his own chip forward.

Skipper Tom Spratt increased the visitor’s advantage after some good work from the forwards and a sublime break from Alan Grogan.

Andy Bell added the conversion.

Morley then regained the lead as they scored back-to-back tries to make it 19-14 at half time.

Ossett took control in the second half and good use of their subs meant their line was rarely threatened.

The away side then went ahead for a second time as Lee Hemingway put Jack Mumford over.

Ossett continued to hold the upper hand with only two points between the sides.

But in a bizarre end to the game, the Morley scrum-half kicked the ball dead as he mistakenly thought his side were in front and inadvertently sealed the win for Ossett.

Tomorrow afternoon Ossett 2nd XV are away at Moortown 3rd XV while the first team will travel to Stanley Rodillians.

CLECKHEATON failed to reach the quarter finals of the Yorkshire Cup after they were knocked out by Ilkley.

The county cup has lost its sparkle in recent years, with just 13 teams entered into this season’s competition.

Cleckheaton’s tie was one of only three to be played at the weekend as two National League Two sides failed to fulfil their fixtures.

Free wrestling showcase in Batley BATLEY-BASED wrestling gym, Wrestling UK will be holding a free showcase tomorrow evening (Saturday).

The gym, that held its first live event in 2009, has recently moved into the old Salvation Army ‘Castle’ on Branch Road in Batley.

MICHAEL SWEENEY and Stuart King produced a superb performance to win Thornhill’s Open Pairs, sponsored by Thomas Savage, in a top-quality field which saw some excellent bowling throughout in fine conditions.

They beat Kez Smith and Mark Hughes 21-12 in a much tighter contest than the score

OSSETT TOWN’S FA Cup dreams were brought to an end as they were eliminated in their fourth qualifying round replay against Solihull Moors.

The Reds were aiming to make club history by progressing to the first round of the FA Cup for the first time.

Corey Gregory’s equaliser on Saturday afternoon proved enough to force a replay against the West Midlands outfit but the National League side were too strong second time around.

It was a brave effort from Ossett, who pushed their higher-ranked opponents the whole way at a packed Ingfield on Tuesday evening, but it will be Solihull who host League Two Wycombe Wanderers in the next round.

In a frantic start the visitors should have taken the lead with only five minutes on the clock.

The ball was played back across goal to Liam Daly, whose side-footed effort went wide of the post from only six yards out.

Minutes later they did take the lead when Darren Carter swung a corner to the back post that was shinned into the net by Joel Kettle.

Kai Hancock had a chance to level the scores just after, as the ball

The referee adjudged Dapo Afolayan to have been fouled in the area and Carter took the spot kick, sending Leigh Overton the wrong

way in the Ossett goal.

At the beginning of the second half Shepherd Murombedzi almost put the game out of Town’s reach but his shot from outside the box flashed just wide of the post.

The visitors felt they should have had another penalty but the referee waved away the appeals and put George Carline in the book for simulation.

their own as Alex Peterson was bundled over in the area, however the referee again played on, to the frustration of the Town supporters behind the goal.

At the other end Overton kept Town in the tie as he scrambled across the goal to prevent the ball trickling over the line after it rebounded off Alex Low. The game became more open as it passed the 70-minute mark as Anthony Mackie earned a free-kick in a dangerous position.

The ball was whipped deep into the area and was headed back across goal to Peterson, who had the easy job of nodding the ball into the empty net.

A frantic end ensued with both sides having several chances to score in front of the 1,176-strong crowd.

The best chance came to Martin Pembleton who somehow managed to glance his header wide from five yards out with the goal at his mercy.

Solihull went up the other end and almost sealed it but for a great recovery tackle from Isaac Assenso, who was magnificent all evening.

Ossett’s final chance came from a corner that was played to the back post, but despite pressure from several Town players Solihull keeper Nathan Vaughan gathered safely.

As Vaughan lumped the ball up field the referee blew the full time whistle, bringing Ossett’s courageous FA Cup run to an end.

OSSETT ALBION were dumped out of the West Riding County Cup after defeat at home to Pontefract Collieries in the first round.

Two goals in the opening 12 minutes stunned the hosts as they were unable to muster a reply.

Mark Whitehouse opened the scoring shortly after kick off before Chris Jackson doubled Pontefract’s lead soon after.

The defeat is Albion’s second in as many games after they were comfortably beaten 4-1 at home by Trafford on Saturday afternoon.

Scott Septhon scored just after the

half hour mark to put Trafford in front.

A penalty from Aaron Burns three minutes later doubled the visitors advantage.

Stephen Mason sealed the win for Trafford as he got his name on the scoresheet with 15 minutes remaining.

Andy Welsh gave Albion a glimmer of hope as he scored from the penalty spot, but it proved scant consolation as Michael Monaghan fired home Trafford’s fourth goal of the afternoon.

Tomorrow afternoon Albion face Droylsden (3pm) for the fourth time this season, having already played them in the FA Cup and the FA Vase.

In other news, Ossett Albion will be holding academy trials on Thursday October 26 from 2pm-

3.30pm at Dimple Wells.

The Education and Football Academy offers young footballers the chance to join a semi-professional academy where they will study at BTEC level, train with a UEFA qualified coach and play in the NPL Football Academy League and FA Youth Cup. Lower Hopton set up Leeds tie

LOWER HOPTON produced a memorable giant killing in the first round of the West Riding County Cup when the Second Division outfit won 5-3 in their home tie with Premier Division side Bradford Park Avenue.

Ruby Marlow took advantage of defensive errors to score twice and give Hopton a 2-0 lead at half time.

Avenue hit back to score through Kirsty Russell (two), and Nicky Holdsworth but they were matched goal for goal by Marlow who grabbed all five of her side’s goals to secure a second round tie at home to Leeds United.

Leeds, from Division One of the FA

Women’s Premier League Northern section, went through with a 13-0 win at Ripon City.

A 4-1 win over County League side Clifton Rangers saw Ossett Albion through to a home tie with Leeds United reserves. Jo Atkinson, Beth Gibbins, Charlotte Gough and Ebony Allen were the Albion scorers while Leeds also made comfortable progress with a 7-0 win over Republica Internationale.

But, there was no joy for Ossett Town as the County League First Division side went to North East Regional League Southern Division front-runners Harrogate Town and crashed to a 12-2 defeat.

It is back down to earth for Lower Hopton as they seek to preserve their 100 per cent start in Division One with a visit from Farsley Celtic Development, while in the same division Ossett Town Development, with four defeats from four, go to leaders Middleton who boast four wins from their opening four games.

LIVERSEDGE FC left it late to secure all three points as they almost threw away a two-goal lead against Parkgate on Tuesday evening.

Andrew Wood scored all three of Sedge’s goals to move his side up to 14th in the table.

The Clayborners have played as many as four games fewer than teams above in the league and could begin to rocket up the table if they get the much-needed points in those fixtures.

Wood opened the scoring on Tuesday night with only 12 minutes on the clock, and it remained 1-0 until half time.

Sedge doubled their lead 20 minutes into the second half as Wood scored his second.

Two goals in three minutes then drew Parkgate level as Liversedge saw their two goal advantage completely wiped out.

Jassim Alali netted with 13 minutes remaining before Kieran Hirst scored the equaliser.

Liversedge went up the other end five minutes later and snatched the winner with Wood completing his hat-trick.

On Saturday afternoon, despite dominating for large parts of the second half, Sedge lost 1-0 at home to Handsworth Parramore.

Jonathan Froggatt scored what proved to be the only goal of the game with seven minutes on the clock. In the run-up to half time Joe Walton had a glorious chance to level the scores but he put his effort wide after being played

More chances came the way of Liversedge but a superb stop from the Handsworth keeper and a goal-line clearance saw the visitors cling to their lead in the second half.

Despite their constant pressure the hosts were unable to find a way past the Handsworth defence as the referee brought proceedings to a close.

Tomorrow afternoon Liversedge travel to Ashton Athletic in the FA Vase (3pm).

Promotion beckons for Moor NCL Division Three

DEWSBURY MOOR secured their place in the NCL Division Three play-off final with an 11th-straight win.

The Maroons will play host to Woolston Rovers tomorrow (Sat) for a place in Division Two after seeing off the challenge of Oldham St Annes.

Toby Richardson scored two tries and picked up the man of the match as his side led 18-6 at half-time before a mini-revival from Saints.

Oldham got to within two points but a late flurry of tries from Moor earned them a final spot.

Richardson opened the scoring with a sixth-minute try as Aiden Ineson landed the conversion before being sin-binned for a swinging arm five minutes later.

Saints responded quickly after Ineson went off when Dominic Bryan went in, with Matthew Whitehead converting.

Two tries in three minutes came from George Croisdale and then a second from Richardson as Ineson, on his return, landed the conversion to the latter.

He also slotted a penalty just before the half hour for an 18-6 half-time lead as Saints had Callum Fletcher binned for persistent offences on 27 minutes.

Saints came out in the second half with two tries in five minutes to reduce the arrears to just two points.

Centre Joe Hartley got the first before Bryan added his second as Whitehead landed the conversion.

Just shy of the hour Jacob Flathers went in as Ineson added the conversion before two late tries sealed the win.

Jordan Foster and Peter Robinson added four-pointers and Ineson took his goal tally to six out of seven.

Moor’s play-off final will is tomorrow afternoon (2.30pm) at Heckmondwike Road.

JUNIOR RUGBY LEAGUE Johnson caps fine season with awards night double Young Trojans clinch title SHAW CROSS SHARKS ended their season with a presentation night on Saturday.

Alex Whittaker took home the clubman of the year after displaying great dedication throughout the course of the season.

The winger also made three appearances for the Sharks, usually pulling on a shirt with only a few hours’ notice.

Casey Johnson deservedly took home two awards as he was awarded the forward of the year along with players’ player of the year.

Johnson made 19 appearances in the league, kicking 51 goals and earning five man of the match awards.

The number eight was also Shaw Cross’s toppoints scorer with a total of 106.

Young hooker Jamie Searby was awarded the most improved player, the number nine made 15 appearances in his first full season with the open age side.

Back of the year went to Ross Roebuck who scored six tries in 17 appearances.

Young player of the year was awarded to Sam Ottewell.

The utility back made 21 appearances this season, scoring 16 tries - he was also named man of the match on three occasions.

Child given whistle for World Cup DEWSBURY referee James Child is one of nine UK-based match officials who will be going to the Rugby League World Cup in Australia.

Child, who refereed this year’s Grand Final, has been a touch judge at the last two Rugby League World Cup Finals.

The Dewsbury-born official will now take charge of a World Cup game

for the first time in his career when the tournament starts next week.

“I’m delighted to have been selected to officiate at the Rugby League World Cup,” said Child.

“Having been privileged enough to have touch judged at the last two World Cup Finals, I know what an honour it is to be involved at the highest level of international rugby league.

“This will be the first time I will have refereed at a World Cup, so it will be even more special.”

Dewsbury Celtic product Alex Walmsley and former Dewsbury Moor players Sam and Tom Burgess will also be flying the district flag at the World Cup after their England call-ups.

England will face hosts Australia in the first game of the tournament.

THORNHILL TROJANS WARRIORS UNDER12s won the Division Three title with a hardfought win over Eastmoor Dragons.

In a tight first half Thornhill battled to take control with some penetrating runs from Connor Hickling, who looked dangerous all afternoon.

Felix Ellis led the defensive effort bravely throughout the game.

The hosts took the lead as Henri Wood dived over the whitewash, Bailey Lee added the extras - his first of four successful attempts from five efforts.

The visitors refused to lie down and scored the equalising try mid-way through the first half. The Trojans hit back as Ellis stepped away from the defence and dotted down.

Thornhill added a third as a flowing move was finished off by Eddie Fothergill who powered his way over the line.

Eastmoor stayed within reach of the hosts

The Trojans put the result beyond doubt as Hickling’s barnstorming run resulted in a try.

Fothergill touched down for his second of the game minutes later to seal the win.

Eastmoor had the final say as they scored a consolation but it was to be Thornhill’s day as the referee brought proceedings to a close.

• SHAW CROSS SHARKS UNDER-9s showed immense improvement in their game away to Hunslet Warriors on Sunday.

SLIM PICKINGS Not much scope for signings, says Kelly DEWSBURY head coach Neil Kelly has admitted there is a possibility that no new signings will be made by the club before the start of the 2018 season.

The Rams boss says that he is finding it difficult to identify targets and admits he does not want to make new signings simply because other players have left the club.

“The tendency is to rush in and make signings and then almost repent about the signings you have made,” said Kelly.

“Although some players have now left the club the scope for signing new players isn’t that great.

“I don’t expect many players to come in, if any, I don’t think the same number of players will be coming in compared to the number of players going out.

“Despite that, we have signed the majority of the players that were in the squad last year and we have still been able to make some additions to our squad.”

Dewsbury confirmed a number of departures this week, with Brad Foster, Mickael Goudemand, Tom Hemingway, Shaun Squires and Tony Tonks all leaving the club.

Kelly has said that the majority of

players left because they did not warrant a new deal, while some players were released to help free up the budget for potential recruits.

He said: “There are various reasons that players have left, one of them being the budget.

“When you get a new contract it is based on what you have done in the previous contract and some of the players didn’t do enough to deserve a new deal.

“I want to try and look elsewhere to find players who I feel deserve a contract at the club.”

Kelly has already signed secondrower Martyn Reilly from Halifax and centre Harry Wollard from Huddersfield Giants to bolster his squad next year.

Jordan Crowther has also joined on a season-long loan from Super League neighbours Wakefield Trinity.

Winger Dale Morton is another to have agreed new terms that will see him stay at the Tetley’s Stadium for a sixth season.

Dewsbury will begin their pre-season training in mid-November, their first game back in action will be the Boxing Day derby against Batley Bulldogs.

The Rams will also be holding a testimonial game for Paul Sykes but Kelly has said he doesn’t want to arrange too many pre-season friendlies.

He added: “I am not a big believer in artificially making the season longer and then complaining about how many games you will then have to play.

“I want to keep my pre-season fixtures to a minimum rather than play to the maximum amount.”

Hemingway adds depth to Bulldogs BATLEY BULLDOGS have announced the signing of Tom Hemingway, who has rejoined the club after a three-year spell with Dewsbury.

The half-back spent a year at Batley in 2013 where he scored seven tries in 25 appearances while kicking 96 goals as the Bulldogs reached the Championship Grand Final.

Hemingway has become Batley’s fourth new signing as boss Matt Diskin looks to strengthen his squad ahead of the 2018 campaign.

“Tom will add some depth to the squad, as we have allowed Cain Southernwood, who was one of our half-back options, to move on,” said Diskin.

“Cain expressed an interest to leave as he wanted to play regularly and that wasn’t something I could guarantee.

“Tom has a real desire to be at the club and has a really good understanding of the game and he gives us depth at hooker and half-back.”

Diskin says that the club are still in the market for more players but admits that there are few options available.

He added: “We are working on

Inspirational teen receives parliamentary invite

By Ben McKenna IT IS not every day that a teenager from Dewsbury receives a parliamentary invite to the House of Lords, but Jodie Ounsley has already proved that she is no ordinary teenager.

Born prematurely, Jodie faced a battle to survive, with the antibiotics used to treat her causing profound deafness in both ears.

Thornhill-based Jodie was also fitted with a cochlear implant shortly after her first birthday.

But that has not stopped her from achieving World and British titles across various sports as she continues to defy the odds.

The sprinter qualified for the Great Britain Deaflympics team at the age of 15 and made the semifinals of both the 100m and 200m, despite being one of the youngest athletes at the games held this July in Samsun, Turkey.

Jodie’s invite to the House of Lords was to celebrate the success of the GB Deaflympics team, who won nine gold medals.

The 16-year-old is also a five-time junior World Champion in coal carrying, a British Brazilian jiu jitsu champion, and has played representative rugby union.

She only started playing rugby when she turned 14 and within two seasons of taking up the sport the GB athlete had represented both her county and country.

“I’d wanted to get into rugby for years but my Dad wasn’t keen on the idea, when my younger brother started I was adamant I wanted to try as well,” said Jodie.

“I went down to Sandal RUFC and

spoke to the women’s head coach Andy Bevan, I was very nervous but the club were very welcoming and helpful.

“I was invited down to a game and ended up playing as a substitute with a promise that I would come on for at least the last five minutes.

“My time came and I went on the wing, it looked like I wasn’t going to get any action but then the ball popped up to me, I took it in my own half stepped around a few players and then used my pace to run all the way to score a try.

“I was hooked – there was no turning back from there.”

Since her debut for Sandal Jodie has gone on to play for Yorkshire U15s, U-18s, England North 7s and has recently been named in the RFU England U-18 squad.

The Yorkshire winger is currently part of an elite sports training program at Loughborough College where she trains and studies during the week and travels home to Dewsbury on the weekends.

Jodie hopes her story can help to inspire other athletes who may feel held back by their disability.

She said: “There are disadvantages to being profoundly deaf but I’ve never known any different so I just get on with it, having a disability should not put you off trying anything or chasing your dreams.

“I always try to look for the positives in my personal circumstances, being deaf on the rugby pitch can be a disadvantage but I haven’t let being deaf hold me back.

“Rugby is a team sport and you need to communicate with your team mates, all my teammates and

cover everyone else had stopped.

“Being deaf has brought me some benefits in rugby because I don’t rely on hearing I always play with

my head up, this helps me when looking for my teammates and any spaces to attack, it’s worked well for me so far.”

With the women’s game growing Jodie feels it is a great time for more girls to get into rugby.

She said: “It’s a perfect time for women to get into rugby, England were world champions until very recently, rugby 7s is now an Olympic sport and the new women’s Premiership league has just started.

“There is a lot of work to do but I am now seriously looking for a career as a professional athlete in rugby.

“My aim is to compete in the Olympics at rugby 7s, to play for England women’s elite team in a World Cup and to continue with my athletics for Deaflympics GB.” The Dewsbury athlete will represent Great Britain at the European Indoor Deaf Athletics Championships next March.

In April she will travel to Sydney for the Deaf Rugby 7s Championships.

A lot of Jodie’s competitions are unfunded and she even works part time to raise money.

She added: “I am always looking for sponsorship to help fund my training and competing. I am living away from home at Loughbourogh to get the best training possible.

“It’s like going to university two years early but I’m not entitled to any student loans because I’m too young, it all has to be self-funded.

“Some of the events I’m selected for such as representing England at the World Deaf 7s in Australia are not funded, so I am fund raising to get myself there.”
