BY STAFF REPORTERS MEDICAL issues will not form part of the defence for the man accused of murdering Batley and Spen MP Jo Cox. Thomas Mair, 53, is accused of shooting and stabbing Mrs Cox outside a constituency surgery in Birstall on Thursday June 16.

He is charged with murder, inflicting grievous bodily harm, possession of a firearm with intent to commit an indictable offence and possession of an offensive weapon.

During a preliminary hearing at the Old Bailey on Monday, the prosecution in the case stated that the main issues in the trial would be “factual”.

Cairns Nelson, defending, confirmed to the court that Mair had been assessed by doctors and that medical evidence would not form part of his defence.

He was due to appear via

video link from the high-security Belmarsh Prison, but due to a technical problem this was unable to take place.

His barrister gave permission for the hearing to go ahead despite his absence.

The case is being handled under terrorism protocols by Mr Justice Saunders.

Mair, an unemployed gardener from Birstall, is due to appear at the Old Bailey on October 4 for a plea hearing and will then stand trial in mid-November.

Labour MP Mrs Cox, 41, had spent the morning of June 16 visiting a school and a care home in her constituency and was on her way to a meeting with constituents at Birstall Library when she was killed.

A by-election to choose her successor will take place on Thursday October 20.

DEWSBURY MP Paula Sherriff has spoken of her concern after it was revealed how many operations were cancelled at short notice last year.

An investigation by the BBC revealed that three times as many operations were cancelled at short notice last year than officially recorded by Mid-Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust.

Only cancellations made on the day of a planned operation are recorded in their offical figures.

However, the report revealed that the number of planned procedures cancelled up to three days before was almost triple this.

Official NHS figures state that 339 operations were cancelled by the trust at the last minute.

However, the number cancelled in the three days before the operation was 928.

Ms Sherriff (Lab, Dewsbury and Mirfield) expressed her worry over the figures.

She said: “Cancelled operations have a huge impact on patients – I’m deeply concerned that the true scale of the problem is being hidden from the official figures.

This shows the real pressure hospitals are under.

“We know that locally, Mid Yorkshire Hospitals Trust is facing cuts of some £26m this financial year – its hospitals are facing well-documented staffing problems. ”The government need to acknowledge that the real number of operations being cancelled is far greater than officially recorded.

“This is another example of how government cuts are effecting healthcare locally.”

Around 44,000 operations were cancelled nationally last year on top of the 33,000 on the day cancellations.

News in Brief Death of ex-council stalwart David Daniel

THE SOUNDS of a baby’s cries have been ringing around the new Bronte Birthing Centre this week for the first time.

The new £1.38 million midwife-led unit at Dewsbury and District Hospital opened on Monday – but staff had to wait until the early hours of Tuesday for their first birth. Amy Lloyd welcomed her son Joseph into the world at 2.59am.

The new mum praised the facilities and said: “It was a really great experience, everything went very well and I was impressed with the birth suite. I delivered in the birthing pool and it’s a great experience and I would recommend the unit to other mothers.”

The new facility will not have any consultants on site, who will now all be based at Pinderfields Hospital in Wakefield. The new centre comes amid a host of changes at Dewsbury Hospital. A protest was held outside the hospital last week to mark the first round of changes.

Campaigners claim services are being downgraded while Mid Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust argue services are simply being centralised to offer more specialist care.

KIRKLEES: David Daniel, the last chairman of West Yorkshire County Council and a prominent councillor, has died.

Mr Daniel, who passed away at the weekend was 75 and began his political career as a Labour borough councillor for Dewsbury in 1966. One of Mr Daniel’s biggest achievements was founding the Yorkshire Society in 1980 in an effort to promote the county.

More recently he held a more Eurosceptic stance and stood on behalf of UKIP on a number of occasions. He was vice chairman of the Leeds branch of UKIP and the honorary president of the Dewsbury, Batley and Spen branch.

His funeral is at Cottingley Hall Crematorium on Thursday September 29 at 1pm for his funeral service.

By James Morris THE LABOUR Party have revealed a shortlist for their candidate to stand in the upcoming Batley and Spen by-election.

Former soap actress Tracy Brabin is joined by a former parliamentary candidate Jane Thomas on the two-woman list.

It was widely expected that Mrs Brabin – who was a close friend of Jo Cox – would put herself forward to stand in the by-election which has been scheduled for October 20.

The former Coronation Street, Emmerdale and EastEnders star campaigned alongside Mrs Cox during the run-up to the 2015 election and just last week changed her Twitter handle to @Tracy4MP. She was born in Batley and campaigned alongside Mrs Cox to save the town’s library.

Mrs Thomas stood as the Labour candidate for Keighley in the 2010 General Election after sitting Labour MP Ann Cryer decided to stand down.

However she was defeated at that timeby Conservative candidate Kris Hopkins who won with a majority of 2,940.

The pair will take place in a hustings

event tonight (Fri) in Batley.

Batley has been without an MP since Mrs Cox was shot and stabbed in Birtsall on June 16.

Democrats have announced candidates alongside former UKIP candidate Waqas Ali Khan, who will stand as an independent.

BATLEY: A man has denied assaulting a police officer. Steven Smith, 46, pleaded not guilty to assaulting a police officer in the execution of his duty when he appeared at Kirklees Magistrates’ Court.

Smith, of West View was bailed until his trial on November 4.

‘Intimidation’ charge BIRSTALL: A man who is accused of assault has denied a fresh allegation of intimidating a witness.

Lance Cook, 27, of Rawfolds Avenue, is alleged to have gone to the home of Claire Thompson and banged on her door, ordering her to retract her statement from a wounding allegation against him.

His trial will be held on November 4 and he was remanded in custody by Kirklees Magistrates.

News In Brief Couple assaulted in attack at home BATLEY CARR: A man was knocked unconscious when he and his partner were allegedly attacked by a group at their home.

Karwan Kamid is said to have been struck with a garden ornament when he was confronted by three men at his house. It is alleged that his partner, Naomi Wallace, was also assaulted as she tried to defend him.

Kirklees Magistrates’ Court heard that the incident happened at an address on Picklesfield on February 17.

Zahir Hussain, 42, also of Picklesfield, faces charges of assault causing actual bodily harm and assault by beating.

A 16-year-old boy also appeared faced with the same charges. The case was committed to Leeds Crown Court on October 13.

‘Evidence’ of Field Lane’s fly-tip culprits A LARGE amount of rubbish has been dumped in a Batley town centre car park.

The waste, which includes a bed, building material and a toilet, was discovered last week in the Field Lane car park. Following the flytipping a car was then burnt out in the same spot over the weekend.

Kirklees Council are aware and say they are in the process of taking action.

A spokesman added: “The council have visited the site of the fly tipped waste and have found some evidence to suggest who may be responsible.

“The council is now taking action to confirm their identity and serve them with a notice to remove the waste.

“The council is committed to reducing flytipping by ensuring those responsible are held to account for their actions.

“When we have possible evidence of a culprit, unless there is a danger to the public, we will delay removing waste until we have fully investigated.”

Boundary changes are innately unfair - Howard

By Steve Martyn THE BOUNDARY Commission for England has been criticised for excluding local communities from access to its plans to break up the Batley and Spen constituency.

The review of parliamentary constituencies proposes a new Batley and Morley seat, where two Batley wards join three Leeds wards; plus a new Spen seat that merges the four Spen Valley wards with two from Bradford South.

But the BCE has been criticised for only sending hard copies of their proposals and maps to the town halls in Morley and Cleckheaton and nowhere else.

Labour campaign manager Dan Howard, who worked on the boundary review for former Batley and Spen MP Mike Wood and for the late Jo Cox MP, said these proposals should be as widely available as possible.

“The consequences of this boundary review are enormous, not least for Batley and Spen which would cease to exist if the proposals are accepted,” he said.

“The review itself is innately unfair and undemocratic. It will re-draw constituencies based on 2015 figures – ignoring and excluding two million voters who have registered since.

“The plans should be as accessible as possible, not restricted.

Placing them in Morley and Cleckheaton but not in Batley, Heckmondwike, Wyke or Birstall is unacceptable. Copies won’t even be available in Dewsbury.

“This is an early insight into what many fear this review will ultimately lead to – the disengagement and disenfranchisement of local voters.”

Royal date for great little carer Armaan

WELLCHILD: Armaan Aslam looked after his late brother Arslan

A NINE-year-old Dewsbury boy is set to meet Prince Harry after winning a prestigious award.

Armaan Aslam will collect the 2016 WellChild Award in London next month after he was recognised for his selfless work caring for his older brothers.

Both of Armaan’s older brothers had the degenerative condition Duchenne’s Muscular Dystrophy, which requires an intensive care regime.

Sadly in 2015 Arslan died at the age of 16 and 24-year-old Hassan is currently in the latter stages of the disease.

Armaan has learnt how to use the medical machinery needed to support Hassan and sits with him for hours on end to entertain him, help with his daily needs, such as feeding, and cheer him up when he is feeling unwell.

Armaan also helps his mother look after the house and his younger sister, Nadia.

The caring youngster also finds time to fundraise for a number of local charities.

He will collect his award at a cermony at the Dorchester Hotel in London on October 3 after he was selected from hundreds of nominations in the most caring child category.

Armaan was nominated for the award by social worker Rebecca Crossland.

She said: “Armaan willingly devotes his time to helping his family at home as well as working hard at school.

“Everyone who meets him comments on what a delightful, happy little boy he is, with a constant smile.

“He really deserves the recognition of winning a WellChild Award.”

A DEWSBURY man threatened to throw his partner off of the train they were travelling on and spat at her in front of their young son.

Kyle Lindley, 25, was returning home from a holiday to Blackpool with his partner and their three-year-old son when he became abusive while drunk.

Kirklees Magistrates’ Court was told that Lindley upset other passengers during the journey by encouraging his son to copy his behaviour. He also broke his restraining order by being in her company.

The court heard that the couple had been on holiday and had been trying to get the restraining order lifted. However, on the journey home, he spat at her and made threats to throw her from the train.

He admitted assault and breaking his restraining order. At a later date, Lindley took his mother’s car without permission and was caught drink driving, for which he had a previous conviction.

District Judge Michael Fanning jailed Lindley for five months and banned him from driving for five years.

A charity called Veterans Council, based in a backstreet Wigan community centre, landed £500,000, moved into a luxury suite of offices in a stately home and blew the lot within 18 months.

Its chairman Des White won’t say where the money went – but worse, no-one from the criminally culpable authority involved wants to know. They won’t even acknowledge the fraud, because then they’d have to do something about it.

That’s what happened with the Big Lottery Fund and Kirklees Council with all the scams running out of the Taleem Training Centre. It’s the three wise monkeys-style of accountability – hear no evil, see no evil, speak lots of cover-up gobbledegook.

Big numbers like that become meaningless … billions this, trillions that … but for context, it’s more than the M25 cost in its entirety.

Costs, already out of hand, mean that if a track ever gets laid it will cost nine times more per mile than France’s superfast TGV network – and they haven’t even bought a model Thomas the Tank Engine yet!

What the people tasked with working on HS2 have done however is buy up land on the proposed routes like wild west cattle barons.

HECKMONDWIKE: Fire crews from Dewsbury and Cleckheaton tackled a blaze which completely destroyed a shed at an allotment. They were called to the fire on New North road at around 9.20pm on Monday. Nobody was injured in the incident but the cause of the fire is currently under investigation.

Pensioner goes on trial for historic sex crimes

By Staff Reporters AN old age pensioner from Batley who allegedly raped and indecently assaulted two young girls over a 16year period has appeared at court.

Bradford Crown Court heard that Jeremiah Cummings’ alleged victims were aged five and seven when he began abusing them.

The 75-year-old is on trial for 10 counts of rape and seven of indecent assault against two girls. He has pleaded not guilty.

Cummings, of Arncliffe Road, Batley, is said to have raped and abused one of the girls, who is now in her mid 50s, between September 21, 1965 and September 21, 1973.

He is said to have also targeted another girl who is now in her mid 40s between February 26, 1976 and February 26, 1984.

The court heard evidence from one one of the alleged victims who said that Cummings raped and assaulted her in Manningham Park and

Bowling Park in Bradford and derelict houses off Rooley Lane, Bierley.

In a police interview video she said: “Lots of times I told him I’ don’t want to’, but he coaxed me into it.

“When you’re a child you don’t understand anything different. I would look at the sky and wish it was all over and done with.”

The court was told that Cummings would tell the girls not to tell anyone “as it was their secret.”

In 1998 the older alleged

victim told her doctor about the abuse when she was being treated for depression.

However, she did not tell police until 2013.

The younger of the two alleged victims said that she screamed and cried during one attack but Cummings hit her and told her to shut up.

He was arrested on suspicion of abusing the younger victim during the alleged abuse period but was released without charge. The trial continues.

Dear Sir, A big thank you to everyone at Mount Cricket Club for doing Batley proud on Monday night at Headingley.

We sat in the posh seats (thanks to Yorkshire County Cricket Club) and cheered Mount to a tense, one-ball, Twenty-20 victory against the St Peter’s Vatican cricket team.

Mount were then presented with the Sir John Major Friendship Cup. Mount visited Rome last year to play St Peter’s in their back yard and this was the return fixture in Yorkshire. The series stands at 1-1.

I am really looking forward to hearing where the decider will be played!

Town needs traders’ input From: Mrs E Chappell, Ossett Dear Sir, Since my husband and I retired and moved ‘over the border’ to Ossett a couple of years ago I have rarely been into Dewsbury town centre, unless visiting for something specific.

Why? A couple of reasons, the first being that it doesn’t have very much that I need that isn’t available closer and more conveniently.

The second is that whereas in past years you might go into Dewsbury just to wander around for a visit, to have a coffee – or go to Caddies! – and bump into friends or relatives, now all you bump into are the abusive Market Place drunks and women whose faces you cannot see.

And lastly as Glen Riding so rightly pointed out last week in The Press, there is the parking. Earlier this year I needed to go into the bank on my way back from Mirfield.

There must be some of your readers out there who are members of the Labour Party and toed the party line when voting in the referendum. They must surely know, and it would be nice to hear from them.

In the meantime I can only think of the following scenarios: 1. The free movement of professional people, eg doctors. This group must have had a university education paid for by the taxpayers of their home country. Then they migrate.

Do they then leave their home countries short of doctors, thus creating a skills shortage? How does this help the poorer Eastern European countries?

Do they invest their pension pot back home? Do they repay their educational

Are this group unemployed in their home country thus causing a drain on public finances and infrastructure to support themselves and their families?

If our industries are too shortsighted to reinvest some of their profits in training and modernising, then a work permit system is surely a simple answer and we can leave our own unemployed on the scrap heap.

We need truth on local NHS From: Christine Hyde, Dewsbury Moor Dear Sir, Last Friday saw the first downgrade to Dewsbury Hospital.

On Saturday I learned that Barnsley Hospital had stopped taking stroke patients. These are being sent to Pinderfields, now serving an area which used to have three hospitals.

How can we be sure that it will not get stroke patients from Leeds with the new STP reorganisation?

Leaked West Yorkshire footprint documents indicate the equivalent of five ward closures in Leeds hospitals.

People need to write to their local councillors and ask them to demand the West Yorkshire footprint plan be published and to refuse to sign it off without seeing and agreeing the full document.

Do not take the health service for granted!

Jilted hubby used bat on sister-in-law A UNIVERSITY student has avoided jail after hitting his sister-in-law with a baseball bat.

Mohammed Usman Khan, 21, became angry after his pregnant wife told him that she wanted to end their relationship.

The criminology undergraduate received a text from his wife Hannah on November 20 last year, Leeds Crown Court was told.

Robert Stevenson, prosecuting, said that Khan had originally replied ‘okay’ to the message.

But when he arrived at his home in Tanhouse Street, Ravensthorpe, he became angry after finding out that she had told his mother and sister that she was leaving him.

The court heard that Khan threatened to smash up the car his mother-in-law and sister-in-law would be arriving in.

Despite her husband locking the door and hiding the keys, his wife managed to make her way outside before Khan came out with the bat and hit her sister on the leg, causing bruising.

Elyas Patel, representing Khan, said that the couple’s daughter had been born earlier this year and due to bail conditions he had not been there for the birth.

He was still hopeful of them getting back together and having a full role in his daughter’s life. Mr Patel said Khan’s wife blamed her pregnancy hormones for a “storm in a teacup.”

Khan, who is about to start his second year at Huddersfield University, admitted assault and possessing an offensive weapon.

He was handed an eightmonth jail sentence, suspended for 12 months with 20 activity days to include a safer relationship course.

Coxes protest BATLEY & SPEN: The husband of the late Jo Cox MP joined thousands of protestors last weekend urging the government to do more to help refugees fleeing war.

Brendan Cox took his two children, Cuillin and Lejla, to march on Downing Street.

Before the march, Mr Cox tweeted: “Jo and I planned to be on today’s refugee march.

DRUNKEN NUISANCE Town centre bans for Ravensthorpe teen

By Staff Reporters A DRUNK has been banned from his own job centre after he entered it armed with a piece of masonry.

Ravensthorpe teenager Ian Muchmore was also banned from Huddersfield town centre after he burgled one store and urinated outside another.

He was banned from Dewsbury job centre after he became abusive towards members of staff and was asked to leave on May 25.

Five minutes later he returned, armed with a piece of masonry. He made threats to smash the windows at the centre and punched the automatic glass doors.

Then on August 9, he was caught urinating in the car park of Tesco in Viaduct Street, Huddersfield. A police officer issued him with a dis-

persal order which he signed.

This banned him from entering the town centre for 24 hours, but one hour before it expired he was caught running from an officer who was trying to arrest him.

Muchmore then stole the keys to the Pound Bakery in New Street on September 1.

A delivery driver had unlocked the shop and was unloading goods when the teenager walked past.

He entered the bakery and stole the keys before throwing them down a ginnel and acting aggressively towards the driver.

Kirklees Magistrates’ Court heard that the 19-yearold had been drinking in Huddersfield town centre after attending court and had the intention of stealing from the shop.

Road, Ravensthorpe, was described as a nuisance by his solicitor. Carl Kingsley told the court: “He drinks too much and causes problems.

“When he was given a dispersal order he was seen the next day in the town centre an hour before it was due to expire. He is clearly a nuisance in this area.”

The court heard that he lashed out at job centre staff after his benefits were stopped.

Magistrates made a twoyear criminal behaviour order which bans him from entering Huddersfield town centre. He is also barred from Dewsbury job centre and cannot remain in any Kirklees premises if asked to leave by staff.

He was also handed a community order to tackle his alcohol issues.

‘Aggressive’ mum was grieving A WOMAN who threatened charity shop staff was under pressure on the anniversary of her daughter’s death.

Denise Lamb, 53, had become abusive towards members of staff at the Pass It On charity store in Heckmond-wike on two occasions.

On September 9, she entered the store and asked for her money back on a vase she had previously purchased.

She then began to swear at a member of staff and was arrested and bailed.

Then, last week she revisited the store, once again asking for her money back.

Kirklees Magistrates’ Court was told that she

was asked to leave the store but decided to go to the store’s loading area and take a red tricycle which she said she was taking in lieu payment of the vase. This was later returned to the store by her partner.

Lamb, of Hill Top Estate, Heckmondwike, appeared at court and admitted using threatening behaviour and stealing the tricycle.

Paul Blanchard, mitigating, explained that Lamb’s daughter had committed suicide and the offences were committed at the time of the anniversary of her death and birthday, which were in the same week. Sentencing of Lamb was deferred until December 12.

News In Brief Plans to deal with junior doctor strike NORTH KIRKLEES: Contingency plans have been put in place to minimise disruption during next month’s junior doctors strike.

They will hold the five-day strike from 8am until 5pm between Wednesday October 5 and Tuesday October 11.

Mid-Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust have said that they will be contacting people who have appointments booked on those dates to make alternative arrangements.

The trust have asked patients to keep calls to their appointment centre to a minimum during this time.

Driver thinks quick CLECKHEATON: A lorry driver prevented a serious fire on the M62.

The HGV’s brakes overheated near junction 26 at Chain Bar and the quick thinking driver managed to detach his trailer to prevent the blaze spreading to the load of toilet rolls he was carrying.

A crew from Cleckheaton were called to the scene at 6.43am on Monday morning.

The driver moved to the hard shoulder on the eastbound carriage where firefighters doused the flames .

Relatives sought DEWSBURY: Police are trying to trace a man’s relatives. 68-year-old Frank Coates died at his home in Leeds on Saturday, September 17. He was from Dewsbury and it is believed he still has relatives in the area. Any relatives are asked to call the coroner’s office on 01924 292301.

Birstall residents stir up ‘Gategate’ row

By James Morris RESIDENTS on a Birstall housing estate have branded a gate designed to improve safety in their community as a “waste of money.”

The three-foot high wooden fence was installed on the walkway between High Street and Wesley Close by officials after concerns were raised about residents’ safety.

However, Kirklees Neigbourhood Housing (KNH) who managed the estate, have now removed the gate and will consult with residents.

A number of locals have said that the problems stated have been exaggerated.

Val Bedford has lived at her home on Wesley Close for four years and argued that the reasons given for installing the gate simply don’t exist.

She said: “Apparently there are bikes speeding through here and burglars targeting homes, but I

Those are the words of the new man at the helm of Heckmondwike Grammar School.

Nathan Bulley has taken over the leadership at the high-performing school following the retirement of Mike Cook over the summer.

The former associate head teacher at Harrogate Grammar School has only been in his new job for a matter of weeks but he is keen to get his own message across to both the staff and pupils.

“When I came here on interview and went out in the community, people would say ‘oh that’s so Heckmondwike’ in a bit of a condescending way,” he said.

“So what I am trying to

say is that we want the Heckmondwike Way to be something we can be really proud of.

“The next steps in this are going to be working as a community on what exactly the Heckmondwike Way is and what does it consist of.”

The school is well known for its top exam grades, with 71 per cent of students achieving at least five A* or A grades this year.

However, Mr Bulley was keen to focus on pupils’ enthusiasm and effort as well as natural ability when he spoke to The Press.

“Ability is the starting point, but it has got to be matched by effort and interest in whatever you are doing,” he said.

“So you can be very bright, but if you aren’t putting in any effort, or you aren’t interested in what you are doing, you

aren’t going to go anywhere.

“This seems very appropriate for Heckmondwike Grammar School as we do have some very bright students so we have to push them as much as possible.

“The motto of the school is ‘Nil Sine Labore’ (Nothing Without Work) and everybody talks about that motto.

“But that is why I am trying to bring in that third element that students have to be interested in what they are doing as well.”

The father-of-three is a keen historian and originally started out in education as a history teacher.

He is bringing that to Heckmondwike, teaching year seven students the subject as a way of both helping them find their feet at secondary school and introducing himself.

“A lot of old people live on this estate who come through with heavy shopping. They are having to stop to undo a gate that doesn’t need to be there.”

Dennis Croft has lived in his home for 10 years and he asked why officials had decided to spend money on the gate.

He said: “It is a waste of money.

If it is for safety reasons, how many burglars are going to stop and turn around when they see it?

“It is a nuisance if anything, as it either bangs when it is open all night or rattles in the wind.”

A spokesperson for KNH said: “The gate was requested by several local residents because people were using the narrow walkway as a shortcut on their bicycles.

“There was concern about security and a fear of being knocked down by cyclists.

A BIBLICAL scarecrow festival is returning to Gomersal after five years.

St Mary’s Church is preparing for its second festival on October 1-2. It was last staged in 2011.

Local people, schools, churches and organisations have already chosen their Biblical figures and are already making them into scarecrows.

The festival is the brainchild of Trees Fewster, who said: “This is a way of making the Bible come to life through images and portrayals of some well-known and some lesser-known Biblical personalities.”

Up to 25 scarecrows will be on display around St Mary’s.

Trees added: “When the scarecrows are put in place it not only gives the name of the person, church, or organisation who made it, it also gives the chapter and verse where this character could be found in the Bible. So to find out who they are looking at, people have to pick up a Bible and try to find the correct place.”

The primary participants will be the Churches Together cluster in Gomersal, which brings together two CofE, Moravian, Methodist and United Reformed church.

The festival is on Saturday October 1 from 10am-3pm and 1pm-3pm at St Mary’s Church on Spen Lane. Admission is free.

“I think it is a bit unfair for me to come up with ideas and strategies if I’m not doing them myself, which is very important to me.”

WOMAN POWER, USA STYLE Batley councillor goes on Hillary’s campaign trail

By James Morris A KIRKLEES councillor travelled to the USA to join up with Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign.

Coun Marielle O’Neill was one of 10 people chosen to represent the Young Fabians group on a research and campaign delegation to America.

The delegates from all over the UK met with high-profile officials and organisations to share lessons about how American and British politics could influence each other.

They also made canvassing phone calls and visited homes on behalf of Mrs Clinton in the vital swing states of Pennsylvania and Virginia.

The Batley West Labour councillor described it as “an absolute privilege to represent the UK”.

She said: “As a young woman I experience first-hand the challenges women face working in politics. I am inspired by Hillary Clinton as she is a fighter and a strong woman who rises like a phoenix after each setback, stronger than ever. I knew I had to play whatever small part I could to support Hillary’s campaign and see her make history as the first female president.”

Each of the 10 delegates was given a specific research task and Coun O’Neill’s research topic was focused around digital campaigning – how the candidates are using social media and email to get their message across and raise funds.

The group met with the company behind Bernie Sanders’ social media campaign and learned key tips on how Bernie had used innovative digital techniques to raise cash from small donors.

News in Brief Kids’ centres axed KIRKLEES: Plans to close a number of children’s centres across Kirklees have been backed by the council’s cabinet.

Councillors gave their support to cut the number of centres from 32 to 21 in an effort to save £10million.

The council instead want to create four central ‘hubs’, four designated children’s centres and 13 other sites. One of the designated centres is likely to be in Birstall.

A consultation on the proposals will take place from September 27 to November 22 and the findings will be presented to cabinet on January 17.

“It’s about time we smash the toughest glass ceiling and have a woman holding the most powerful position in the world,” added Coun O’Neill.

“I want to be able to say to my nine-year-old niece that she can achieve anything she wants to, so I was proud to work on Hillary Clinton’s campaign.”

News In Brief Classic cars parade in Crow Nest Park DEWSBURY: The Yorkshire Thoroughbred Car Club will hold their second gathering of the year next week.

A huge selection of classic cars are expected to be on display on Sunday October 2 in an event co-organised by the Friends of Crow Nest Park group.

Mayor of Kirklees Coun Jim Dodds will be in attendance to judge the car classes.

Crow Nest Park will be open for the free event from 11am until 4pm.

Nash raises roof for St Mary’s church BATLEY: A charity race night will be held at Batley Nash to raise funds for roof repairs at St Mary’s Church.

The evening will be held next Friday September 30, with tickets priced at £2.50 per adult which includes a pie and pea supper, hot dogs or pasties.

First prize is a television with the runners-up winning a meal for two in a chauffeured limousine.

The first race starts at 7.30pm and tickets can be bought from the club or by ringing 01924 473917.

The club will also stage another charity race event the previous evening to raise money for the Yorkshire Cancer Centre.

The event will be held on Thursday September 29 from 7.30pm, in memory of local man Steven Jordan.

Branch FM gang tune up the town LOCAL radio station Branch FM went live in Dewsbury as part of their annual day out in the town centre.

The Christian community station broadcast their show from outside the United Reformed Church on Longcauseway from noon on Saturday.

Shoppers and visitors in the town centre were treated to live music from Chris Milner and youngsters were kept entertained with balloon making.

There was also a special viewing of the latest Billy Graham film, ‘Second Chance’.

Kirkwood runners paint Oakwell red – blue, yellow, green...

By Steve Martyn MORE THAN 1,000 people descended on Oakwell Hall Country Park to paint it all the colours of the rainbow at the weekend.

Runners of all ages took on a five-kilometre course to raise funds for Kirkwood Hospice during the Colour Rush event on Sunday.

It was the second time Oakwell Hall had hosted the event that saw all of the participants start in white but finish looking

like a work of art after being pelted with powdered paint bombs along the course.

Event organiser Emily Kennedy was delighted to see so many people coming out to enjoy the day. She said: “It’s been amazing to see people from all different parts of our community coming together to celebrate the work of the Hospice in the most colourful way possible.

“We’ve had around 1,000 people taking part.

Thanks to their generos-

ity, we hope to raise around £35,000 for patient care.”

Rachel Bendig, from Birstall, took part with her friend Jessica Deary and Jessica’s five-yearold daughter Ebony.

Rachel said: “We saw the event advertised and we’ve always wanted to do one. It’s such a fun event and it’s for a great cause.”

Tracy Brabin, who is hoping to stand for Labour in the forthcoming Batley and Spen byelection, also took part.

Barbara has seen first hand the joy and pain of family histories THE emotions experienced by people researching family and local history are well known to Barbara Dixon, the speaker at Batley History Group’s next meeting in the Town Hall on Monday.

For Barbara has not only felt the personal joy, delight, disappointment and amazement at carrying out searches to discover the details about her own ancestors, but in her role as a professional registrar she has seen both the delight and depressive effects that searching through past records can

have on others.

In her talk ‘A Ramble Around The Register Office’ she hopes to recall the experiences which researchers can come across as they delve into the past.

As Barbara started to research her own family history she was amazed to find that one of her ancestors had been condemned to be hung at York for shooting another family member.

This and many other experiences persuaded her to write two booklets to help researchers find the kind of

information they long for – and get over the disappointment if this didn’t always work out.

She has also witnessed many intriguing and amusing situations as people delved into other slices of life at registry offices and she promises to recall some of them during the History Group meeting.

Her talk starts at 7.30pm but there are free refreshments available from 7pm.

The admission charge is £2 for members and £4 for visitors.

Pioneering treatment allows one-day fixing of teeth TOWN HALL DENTAL are introducing the very latest in dental implant technology – Weld One.

Dental implants were first used in the late 1970s as a solution to replace missing teeth. Over the past four decades the concept has evolved enabling dentists to provide a multitude of solutions for their patients.

Project management is an academic skill that is now well established through universities and vocational courses and is an essential component of any significant project across most sectors.

Website design is no different.

Planning a complex website build is important in not only ensuring that all features have been considered, but it also ensures that the client is involved in the planning.

It can be difficult sometimes to imagine how a finished website will function from a usability perspective, and working through the planning process helps clients to understand what the finished project will do.

It also helps manage client expectations in terms of the milestones they need to achieve in preparing content.

One of the hardest things to balance in the development of websites is the content that must be provided, working to a fixed project plan that is regularly reviewed helps a client to understand what needs to be done and when.

Meeting deadlines Meeting deadlines is vital in today’s online world, often a lot can be hanging on the successful delivery of a new website.

Often, especially with e-commerce, there are seasonal needs for having the website ready.

It should be fully tested across all operating systems, browser and device combinations – this process is managed as part of the project plan, with testing being done throughout the build to ensure there are no surprises at the end.

The council’s new Business Hub Kirklees site offers specialist support and assistance to local firms. It brings together the latest information on funding and contract opportunities, business news and events, and access to local experts who can answer questions, all in one place.

It is part of Kirklees’ strategy to support and encourage business growth in the area.

It’s easy for anyone to take part in British Food Fortnight, whether in your community, online, or simply your own home. Even the smallest thing makes a big difference. Here are some ideas: • When you are shopping, make a special effort to

Two saucy thumbs up!

REVIEW: Smokey’s IT’S ONE thing to promise ‘authentic’ western-style barbecue ribs, and quite something else to deliver.

As a long-term ribs fan, it was understandable that I stepped into Smokey’s Original BBQ joint on James Street (near Batley bus station) with an open mind. I would take some convincing.

Smokey’s doesn’t overwhelm you with pages and pages of menu choices – you get what it says on the tin. Ribs (I was never going to have anything else) along with BBQ chicken and burgers, mainly, plus a good choice of sides and accompaniments.

Something for everyone then, if it’s the real taste of the barbie you’re after.

Smokey’s owner Graham Fryer re-opened what was once the Bombay Palace restaurant before Christmas. He lives in Soothill, but has worked in kitchens around the world and imported a BBQ

‘smoker from Oklahoma for his Batley venture. And the verdict? Two, barbecue sauce-covered thumbs up from this fan.

I only had the half rack but the ribs – supplied by Blue Hills Farm Shop in Birkenshaw – were plenty for me, and as good as any I’ve had from the authentic wild west to down under.

There’s a choice of sauces too, which means you never lack for variety. I just had some succulent sweetcorn and chips (as opposed to ‘fries’) with my ribs.

A beer would have been good but I didn’t realise Smokey’s wasn’t licensed. But the knowledge that it encourages BYO, and gets the music rocking on an evening, means this fan will be back for more.

Charity’s fun Ladies Day is dog event a winning bet THE YORKSHIRE Rose Dog Rescue charity is holding its eighth annual Fun Dog Show at Oakwell Hall Country Park this Sunday.

In addition to a range of fun competition classes, the show will have flyball demonstrations, doggie games, children’s entertainment and side stalls.

There will also be free microchipping by the Dogs Trust and the chance to ‘Ask the Vet’ courtesy of Vets4Pets in Birstall.

The event, being held near the Visitor Centre, starts at 11am.

Entries for classes will be taken on the day with judging beginning at 12noon. Classes include doggie fancy dress, waggiest tail, cutest puppy and a musical ‘down’.

There will also be competitions for the best in rescue dogs, pedigrees and cross-breeds.

Youngsters aged 14 and under will get the chance to put their pets through their paces in a junior handler class, demonstrating their sit, down and walk to heel skills.

The show will end with a special free entry class for dogs that have not won any rosettes, with the winner being the dog the judge would most like to take home.

DEWSBURY COLLEGIANS’ next performance will be the comedy ‘Ladies Day’ written by Amanda Whittington.

The play will be directed and produced by regular Collegians leading man Chris Nuttall, who will be making his debut on the other side of the cloth.

Ladies Day is based around the lives of four female fish packers from Hull who go to the Royal Ascot race meeting the year it is held in York.

The story about a gang of four ordinary women is a tale of fractured lives, thwarted ambitions, secrets, hidden heartache and enduring friendships, with tears and laughter thrown in along the way for good measure.

Ladies Day will be performed from Thursday October 27 to Saturday October 29, at 7.30pm at St Paul’s Church Hall, on Kirkgate, Hanging Heaton.

Thank You For The Music, the world’s longest-running ABBA concert show, is coming to Cleckheaton tomorrow (Sat) to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Swedish super group’s biggest-selling hit, Dancing Queen.

The song was a millionselling, number one hit in 13 countries and it forms the climax to the international hit

stage show, which is in its 23rd year.

Show producer Michael Taylor boasts that the spectacle has been delighting live music fans for longer than Bjorn, Benny, Agnetha and Frida did during the 70s and 80s.

“Combining Lycra-tight harmonies with superb musicianship, Thank You For The Music has outlasted ABBA in their prime,” he said.

The set list, drawn from ABBA’s nine number one hit

Ladykillers opens new season DEWSBURY Arts Group’s 2016/17 season opens next weekend with The Ladykillers.

The varied programme includes seasonal music hall, an evening of plays and youth theatre productions.

The main house programme offers a selection of comedy and drama, from The Ladykillers to a new play called The Adventures of Ebenezer Scrooge by Steve Goddard.

The group will also perform The Vertical Hour by David Hare, JB Priestley classic Time And The Conways and old favourite The Odd Couple by Neil Simon.

The final production of the season will be Assassins, with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim.

The season opens on Saturday October 1 with The Ladykillers by Graham Linehan, based on the much-loved Ealing Comedy.

Posing as amateur musicians, criminal mastermind Professor Marcus, together with ‘his gang’, rent rooms in the house of dear sweet-natured Mrs Wilberforce, and plot to involve her, unwittingly, in their brilliantly conceived heist job.

There are performances on October 1 and then from October 3-8, at the Artspace, on Lower Peel Street, Dewsbury from 7.30pm each night.

Blues Brothers tribute A HIGH-octane evening of searing blues and soul music has been lined up for Dewsbury Town Hall.

Award-winning tribute band The Chicago Blues Brothers are appearing for one night only on Friday, October 7 (7.30pm), with proceeds for local charities.

As part of their Jail Break Tour 2016, the band will present a two-hour blockbuster of sound, including major hits such as Respect and Soul Man.

Mainly comprising Yorkshire musicians, the Chicago Blues Brothers have enjoyed an amazing rise to fame in the four years they have been performing, going from small local gigs to being voted the UK’s best tribute band in 2013 and appearing alongside stars including Kylie Minogue.

Chris Hindle and Paul Boocock, lifelong mates from Bradford, founded the band.

Chris plays Jake Blues, with Dewsbury-born Gareth Davey

teaming up with him as Elwood Blues.

Gareth says one reason for the band’s success is the onstage chemistry between him and Chris.

The murder mystery night dinner will take place at the National Coal Mining Museum in Middlestown and is part of a series of fundraising efforts by staff at Dewsbury and District Hospital to raise cash for the Neuro Rehab ward.

Kathryn Fishwick, a consultant from the hospital said: “Money raised from all our events is being used to fund everything from physio equipment to music therapy sessions, all of which helps patients on the Neuro Rehab ward recovering from a stroke, traumatic injury or viral illness to get back to being who they once were.

“The funds will enable us to support them back to being able to do all the things that we take for granted, such as boiling a kettle or handling money.”

The event is on Saturday October 8 from 7pm.

There will be a three-course meal, entertainment and Halloween disco until after midnight.

at Clayborn CODY CROMACK scored a last-minute winner for Liversedge against Worksop Town, to give Sedge the spoils and all three points at Clayborn on Saturday.

The young midfielder’s strike, which was the last kick of the game, deflected off two Worksop defenders before flying into the back of the net and sending the home playing and coaching staff into ecstasy.

Manager Jonathan Rimmington described Cromack’s performance as “immense’ and added: “Cody is still only 18.

“He makes the game look so simple, he is absolutely unbelievable and a diamond footballer.”

The match did not go entirely to plan in the opening quarter for Liversedge. After 20 minutes they found themselves 1-0 down when Worksop forward Charlie Dawes scored from a speculative long-range effort.

The visitors’ opener looked like the wakeup call Liversedge needed to get themselves back into the game.

The last 25 minutes of the first half was all Liversedge, chances came thick and fast but no player in sky blue could convert.

Liversedge’s best chance of the first half fell to makeshift striker Brandon Kane, who controlled the ball and struck it on the half-volley, but the ball whistled just over the crossbar and seconds later the half-time whistle blew.

After the break defender Tom Brook proved lightning really does strike twice as Liversedge scored within a minute of the restart – just the same happened in last Tuesday’s match against Harrogate Railway.

Top-scorer Vaughan Redford might not have got on the scoresheet in Saturday’s match but still proved his worth, running himself into the ground all game and earning Liversedge numerous corners whilst always giving the Worksop back four problems.

This season it seems Liversedge that are a different side after being in the dressing room with manager Rimmington at half-time.

They proved it again as passion, desire and determination were evident after the break.

Liversedge’s hard-working attitude was matched with a touch of class shortly after, when Brandon Kane battled with defenders

and managed to create a chance for teammate Harrison Blakey.

Blakey turned one player and smashed the ball into the visitors’ net to give Liversedge the lead.

Just as they have done all season when holding a lead, Liversedge pushed forward trying to kill the game off.

Unfortunately they were hit with a sucker punch on the break after captain Tom Jackson gave away a free-kick on the edge of the box.

Worksop substitute Henry Sibenge converted it to tie the game at 2-2 with only five minutes remaining.

The visitors had a chance to win the match with only one minute remaining, with only the crossbar prevented them from doing so.

Liversedge went up the other end and young midfielder Cody Cromack showed Worksop how it was done, scoring the winner from 25 yards, giving Liversedge all three points and keeping them within touching distance of the league’s summit.

After the match Rimmington only had positive words for his side.

He said: “The turnaround from last year is quality, for us to compete with Worksop is unbelievable really. I think the last minute goal was no more than we deserved, we were on top throughout.”

Cleary’s first-half strike proves key as Albion make FA Cup progress A DEPLETED Ossett Albion pulled off a superb 1-0 FA Women’s Cup victory over East Yorkshire side Malet Lambert to secure a trip to Hartlepool Ladies in the third qualifying round.

Albion’s record against Malet Lambert is not good but skipper Jodie Atkinson saw her girls dig in and hold on to a first half goal from Claudia Cleary, after good work from Jenna Wraith, with Kim Nallon producing an outstanding display in a fine team performance in the face of some over physical play from the visitors.

Southern section leaders Doncaster Belles in search of a first league win of the season.

In last week’s other cup ties affecting the region Wakefield, beaten 7-0 by Farsley Celtic, Bradford Park Avenue and Brighouse Athletic all fell by the wayside while in the Womens West Riding League Premier Division Battyeford Belles and Ossett Town came down to earth with a bump after both had won their opening league games.

Battyeford crashed 5-1 at home to Brayton Belles while Ossett, who are at home to Hepworth this week, disappointingly lost 2-0 at

Hemsworth Miners Welfare.

Battyeford are at Brighouse Athletic while their reserve side has unfortunately been withdrawn from Division One. In the Second Division it proved to be a bad day all round for Ossett Town as their reserves were crushed 12-1 by visiting Dewsbury Rangers and now face a trip to face the Farsley Celtic Development side.

Dewsbury are at Silsden Development.

Lower Hopton went down 31 at Middleton Athletic in Division Three but try again to secure their first win when they entertain Middleton Park on Sunday.

Rimmington’s approach woes LIVERSEDGE boss Jonathan Rimmington says that his side’s early-season success has attracted the attention of clubs higher up the football pyramid.

Sedge are second in the Northern Counties East League Premier Division table after eight games – and Rimmington claims he’s recently had arguments with officials from other clubs who are trying to lure his young squad members away from Clayborn.

He said: “We’ve had a great start and I’m absolutely delighted that we’re showing the potential that I’ve always known we’ve got, but we’re doing so well that I’ve had four clubs from higher leagues coming in for my players this week.

“What’s more annoying is that some of those

approaches have been by the back door, and I do not like people making illegal approaches.

“I won’t make any bones about it – I’ve had a couple of arguments with people from clubs trying to poach our players over the last few weeks.”

The Sedge boss feels that the interest is a something of back-handed compliment but also had a swipe at officials from the clubs chasing his players.

“I think clubs should do their recruitment in the summer and not wait until a club starts doing well and then say, ‘we’ll have him and him and him’,” he said.

“We have had an unbeaten eight-game run this season but we had a seven-game run at the end of last season, so it’s no fluke.”

Paddy Sykes fired a hattrick as Navigation moved to third place with an 8-3 win at Birstall Cricket Club.

Paul Smith (brace), Oliver Fisher and two own goals accounted for Navigation’s other goals, with Jay Elliot (two) and Reece Scholes replying for Birstall.

The teams imported from the defunct Huddersfield League continue to lead the way in the CHAMPIONSHIP as Linthwaite hammered Battyeford 14-0.

HANGING HEATON cricket chairman John Carruthers refused to blame the weather for his club’s narrow defeat in the All Rounder Bradford Premier League title race, despite the fact they had one game more postponed than champions Pudsey St Lawrence.

“I am happy with the outcome,” said Carruthers.

“I am disappointed but we have come a long way in the last year or two and we have managed to finish runners-up to a very good Pudsey St Lawrence side.

“I know that three out of our last four games were rain-affect-

ed but it was the games we lost, that we should have won, that stopped us winning the league not the weather!”

By a strange coincidence a search of some archive material this week turned up a 1938 cartoon by pre-war cartoonist ‘Thack’ that described how the celebration of the opening of the Hanging Heaton pavilion was spoiled by their Yorkshire Council game against Hunslet Nelson being washed out!

However, Carruthers insists that thoughts of the weather and that last-day triumph for St Lawrence is already behind them and plans are well underway for next season.

“We are delighted to have Muhammed Rameez returning next year and new signings are already in the pipeline,” he said.

at Moorend CLECKHEATON RUFC ran in another seven tries to beat Morley in a great derby.

The Moorenders hosted their first prematch luncheon of the season with over a 100 guests being fed and watered. The diners added to the sizeable crowd gathered for the eagerly-anticipated renewal of the league rivalry between Cleckheaton and their near neighbours.

Cleck, who put 10 tries past Stockport the previous week, were first on the board through Ross Hayden in what would become a hat-trick, Ronan Evans converting from the right-hand touchline.

Evans then added a penalty before an interception led to a try for Morley’s Richard Knowles but Cleckheaton hit straight back, with Neil Chivers crossing the whitewash from the back of a ruck and then Hayden finished off a flowing backs move by squeezing

in again in the right-hand corner.

Neither try was converted but Cleckheaton held a 20-5 lead at the break.

Morley trailed by a similar score at halftime the previous week against Ilkley but then mounted a spirited comeback.

But Cleckheaton were too strong and extended their lead when captain Richard Piper picked up from the back of a five-metre scrum and proved unstoppable.

Tom Austin's try from the back of a line-out then put Cleckheaton into a 32-5 lead with Evans’ conversion.

Morley were down but not out, however, and scored two tries in quick succession, but then Hayden countered with a kick into the in-goal area which he dived on for his hattrick.

Austin ran in his second, and Cleckheaton's seventh, when Neil Chivers fed him a nicelytimed ball in acres of space.

Morley kept trying to the end and were rewarded with the consolation of a bonus point try on 80 minutes from Hayden Bayliss but it was Cleckheaton's day, and a masterful performance netted them five points and third place in the early league table.

Batley face major challenge in league shake-up A MEETING of the All Rounder Bradford Premier Leaguewas held last night (Thursday), when plans for the reorganisation of the competition were expected to be ratified.

Batley, struggling in the CYL Premier Division not so long ago, face what is arguably their biggest-ever challenge when they face the likes of Hanging Heaton, Cleckheaton, Woodlands, East Bierley, Pudsey giants St Lawrence and Congs, Farsley, Bradford and Bingley, New Farnley, Lightcliffe and fellow promoted side Townville in a 12-team Premier Division.

Scholes and Morley drop into the newly-styled Championship 1 along with Baildon, Bankfoot, Birstall, Bowling Old Lane, Gomersal, Methley, Ossett, Undercliffe, Wrenthorpe and Yeadon, while Championship 2 will comprise Altofts, Brighouse, Carlton, Hartshead Moor, Hopton Mills, Hunslet Nelson, Idle, Keighley, Liversedge, Spen Victoria and the two promoted Conferance sides Buttershaw St Pauls and Northowram Fields.

There will be 14 sides in the Conference next year with Windhill returning after a season’s absence, and newcomers Brook Walton and Sandal joining the league.

No club has been relegated from the Championships so the Conference will be completed

by Crossbank Methodists, Heckmondwike and Carlinghow, Adwalton, East Ardsley, Great Preston, Azaad, Rodley, Oulton, Wakefield St Michaels, East Leeds and Gildersome.

After leading the Championship A table nearly all season Batley finally secured the title with a comfortable win over third-placed Undercliffe last weekend.

The day began with Yeadon still in with a chance of leap frogging Batley but while Yeadon struggled with the bat against Baildon, the accumulation of bowling points against Undercliffe slowly eased Batley further and further ahead.

By 1.45pm Undercliffe were 102-5, and Batley were 13 points ahead of Yeadon, then Muhammad Tahir took 4-6 in 3.1 overs and Undercliffe were all out at 2.10pm for 109 while Yeadon, struggling on 78-9, were needing at least 47 to have the remotest chance of the title.

As it happened Yeadon were finally dismissed for 90 at 2.20pm and, with only 15 more points available to them, Batley, already 16 points ahead, were confirmed as Champions and set for promotion to the top flight.

Danny Vento evades Morley tacklers with Tom Austin in support Gerald Christian Cleckheaton’s performance was again top drawer for the majority of the match and the win puts them in third place in National Three North at this early stage of the season.

Tomorrow (Sat) Ilkley are the visitors to Moorend. When the two teams last played in February Cleckheaton ran out winners 17-13 and a keenly-contested game is expected.

American speedster Lady Aurelia returns to a British racecourse for the first time since her scintillating sevenlength victory in the Queen Mary at Royal Ascot in June to take on Frankel’s daughter Queen Kindly in the Group 1 Connolly’s Red Mills Cheveley Park Stakes tomorrow (Saturday).

Lady Aurelia’s US-based trainer Wesley Ward has described her as a once-in-a-lifetime filly, and is predicting a ‘best ever race’ for his odds-on favourite who has been stabled at Newmarket’s National Stud for nearly a month with Frankie Dettori overseeing all of her work.

juvenile to have passed through his Musley Bank stables, and she was mightily impressive when defeating odds on hotpot and fellow Frankel filly Fair Eva during York’s Ebor meeting.

I believe there is a strong case for siding with the Fahey horse as Lady Aurelia was nothing like as explosive in her last win in the Prix Morny.

Queen Kindly showed an impressive turn of foot when caught in a pocket to win the Lowther, and three of the last four winners of the York race have gone on to win at Newmarket and she could follow this trend.

The main event is tomorrow’s Betfred Cambridgeshire (4.10) and it looks to be an exciting affair in the year of Newmarket’s 350th anniversary.

Just three years ago Johnny Murtagh steered home Educate and

is going for a jockey/trainer double when he saddles up Eddystone Rock.

The 4 yo joined Murtagh from France and looks well treated off a mark of 101 and gets 1m2f easily, so the one furlong shorter trip should suit and he looks good each way value at 16-1.

Another to catch the eye at a big price is last year’s third Examiner.

He ran two career bests earlier this spring including a second in the Suffolk Stakes which confirmed his liking for the unique 1m1f Cambridgeshire course and distance.

In the Betfred Cesarewitch I will be keeping my fingers crossed that Sweet Selection gets in to the race as she looks very well in and would carry just 8st 1lb if current top weight Heartbreak City stands his ground.

In the Group 1 Juddmonte Middle Park Stakes I expect Godolphin’s Blue Point to prove himself the best juvenile colt in Britain and build on his devastating win in the Gimcrack

Stakes. I will also be on the Charlie Hills-trained Hurricane Rush in Sunday’s Totesport.com conditions stakes at Epsom (2.40) as this looks the right race for him.

Closer to home Middlestown businessman Alan Jackson has a share in the Paul Midgley-trained Emerald Secret, and will be looking for the 2yo bay filly to pick up place money for the first time in her career in the opener at Musselburgh on Sunday.

Looking back on last weekend’s action at Ayr three horses really stood out and one was Delectation who won the Group 3 Ayr Firth of Clyde.

She’s a lovely filly by Delegator and won smartly at Thirsk in her previous race.

It was trainer Bryan Smart’s 26th winner of the season and he thinks she is better than his previous Firth of Clyde winner Distinctive, who went on to finish fifth in the 1,000 Guineas, and has the Classic in mind for Delectation next year.

Silver Cup winner Morando was

up 10lbs but put still put the race to bed and despite still being very coltish can step up again according to jockey Harry Bentley, and is one to stay with.

Handicaps are now a thing of the past for Ayr Gold Cup winner Brando who tore apart a competitive field and looks certain to be taking on the best in Group company next season.

His Hambleton handler Kevin Ryan who has now won four out of the last 10 Ayr Gold Cup’s has stated that his improving 4 yo gelding will have just one more run this year and he could be heading for a last tango in Paris to contest the Prix de l’Abbeye early next month.

The game was in the balance until the 73rd minute when Will Gledhill went over and held his nerve to kick the conversion.

The Sharks’ put in a masterclass in the second row in what could prove a vital victory.

The Lions led 6-4 at the break with a try from James Kitchen, the first of his hat-trick, plus a Scott Glassell goal against a Will Gledhill try.

Shark Brandon French was sin binned for dissent and was joined by Lion Anthony Yates for kicking out and Shark Jack Gledhill for retaliation.

Joe Fox also went early in the second half for a high tackle before Jack Gledhill crossed for a try.

Kitchen hit back with two more for the Lions but tries from French, Jake Dooner and Will Gledhill gave the Sharks the win.

With four relegation places this season every point is vital if the Sharks are to remain in Division One.

at Overthorpe Park THORNHILL TROJANS showed no mercy in their quest for a play-off place as they put Stanley Rangers to the sword.

The Trojans had the game virtually wrapped up by the half-time break and a try from Joss Ratcliffe shortly after the restart had the points in the bag.

Man-of-the-match Ben Kendall was in awesome form as he registered a hat-trick of tries from the prop forward position.

Kendall’s powerful in-field runs caused the Wakefield team all sorts of problems and the three tries were all very special in their own right.

Danny Ratcliffe was once again in impressive form and he opened the scoring just short of 10 minutes of play when he darted between the posts for an unconverted try.

From this point Thornhill built up a rhythm to their play as they scored at regular intervals, not allowing the Stanley team a look-in.

Next to score for Thornhill was Mindaugas Bendikas when he broke clear on a long-range run.

Bendikas sprinted 60 metres on a superb jaunt down the wing, urged on by the Trojans fans, to score an unconverted try.

Ben Kendall then scored the first of his hattrick and George Woodcock converted.

Good handling from the Trojans then created the next try. Jake Wilson made a dash for the try line and then flipped the ball back into

to the path of the supporting Scott Lee. Lee collected the pass cleanly to go stepping over for a try which George Woodcock converted.

Thornhill once again unpicked the Stanley defence with some good ball handling skills and support play, with George Scott ending a slick move by scoring an unconverted try to make it 24-0 at half time.

Any hopes of a second-half revival from Stanley were quickly scuppered by a converted try from Joss Ratcliffe.

By now the visitors were fighting a lost cause but still the Trojans wanted more.

Mindaugas Bendikas went over in menacing style for his second try of the game to plant the ball down purposefully. Woodcock converted.

Over half the length of the field was covered on a glorious run before Kendall touched down for a try.

A pass from Scott Dyson then provided Ben Kendall with the opportunity to go over for his third try of the game. The pass from Dyson picked out Kendall perfectly and Woodcock added the extras.

In the final moments of the game Scott Dyson had a break from setting up other players tries, by scoring one himself. This time Danny Ratcliffe combined with Luke Haigh to create space for Dyson to race clear and score a try.

Woodcock converted as the Trojans wrapped up their final home league game of the season.

JUNIOR RUGBY LEAGUE

Red cards cost Celtic U-15s dear at Milford DEWSBURY CELTIC U-15S took on Milford Marlins with a heavily depleted squad due to injuries and illness and lost 42-28.

Celtic enjoyed much of the opening possession before hooker Cameron Berry crossed from short range for a try on four minutes, with Charlie Heaton adding the extras for an early 6-0 lead.

Three minutes later and winger Niall McKinnell collected a cross-field kick from Heaton on the last to go over for Celtic’s second. Heaton obliged with the boot for a 12-0 advantage.

The home side rallied, however, and ran in three converted scores inside 15 minutes to take control as half-time approached.

Five minutes from the break saw McKinnell sent off reducing Celtic to 12 men.

After five minutes of sustained attack early in the second period, both Ethan O’Hanlon and Cameron Berry went agonisingly close, crossing the line either side of the Milford uprights but being judged on both occasions to have been held up.

Berry eventually found his way over when a quick tap penalty a metre out caught the home defence napping.

Heaton converted to draw the scores level at 18-18.

Dewsbury Celtic U-15s in action at Leeds Rhinos’ Academy ground with Ryan Birch despatched to the bin, reducing Celtic to 11. The home side took advantage and posted another converted score five minutes later.

Celtic dug deep despite being short on numbers, with in-form hooker Berry running in two more tries in just five minutes to reduce the deficit to 30-28.

The Marlins crossed for a converted try with just five minutes remaining on the clock to extend their lead to 36-28. Tempers flared before hardworking prop Jacob Carr was shown a red card, once again reducing a tired Celtic down to 11 men with just minutes remaining. In the dying seconds, the Marlins finished off a miserable

morning for the green and whites with a final converted try following a loose pass and interception on the Celtic 10-metre line.

Charlie Heaton put in his best defensive performance of the season while hooker Cameron Berry successfully controlled the ruck throughout.

Man of the match went to Conor Appleyard who had picked up an ankle injury in the latter stages of the game.

THORNHILL TROJANS U-11S played a tough away game against a strong Farnley team. The Trojans defended superbly in the first half, preventing three tries thanks to strong tackling from Frazer Cass, who won the oppo-

sition man of the match, the parents' award and top tackler for his hard work.

Strong running by Faith Mckay saw her break the defence and sprint 40 metres to score her first try of the season, earning her the player of the match and the joint opposition award.

Strong driving saw Harry Yates win the 100 per cent award along with Rosie Richardson for a crucial tackle.

Discipline in the second half and some mistakes by the Trojans allowed the Farnley team to cross the tryline again. Regan Lofthouse, Sam Rayner, Dylan Harpin, Jake Lyons, Kieron Haigh, Charlie Key, James Lister, Jake Redmond and Josh Oldrieve all played well.

DEWSBURY MOOR U-10S took on Featherstone Lions, with both sides starting quickly. After five minutes Zain Ajmal went over for a try and not long he crossed the line again and Lewis Greenwood converted.

Cobi Tasker Taylor scored, converted by Joe Maloney, before Tom Lay and Maloney also crossed in the first half.

In the second half the boys dug deep and defended their try line, taking the win with a great team effort.

The coaches' man of the match was Joe Maloney, parents' man of the match was Tom Lay, top tackler was awarded to Cobi Tasker Taylor. The

magic moment went to Ed Cullen and the opposition's man of the match was Zain Ajmal.

SHAW CROSS SHARKS U-8S played host to Stanningley and both teams excelled defensively.

The opposition's man of the match went to Francis Appleyard, who also won the parents' player award for some great running.

The top tackler was Seb Jeffers.

Parents' player awards were given to Jack Stephenson for his superb footwork and Ellis Peake who had an outstanding all-round performance on his debut. Top trainer was awarded to Casey Hirst for his exceptional displays while carrying a knee injury.

Great support and teamwork came from Isaac Redgwick, Bailey Woods, Phoebe Wilson, Kaiden Mullins, Ben Tranter, Harvey Cavanagh, Max Allen, Alfie Law, Charlie Tilford, Dillan Charlton, Jacob Stevenson, Charlee Raby and Eviee Raby.

Running from 1pm-4pm at the club on Purlwell Hall Road, the day of fun includes sports activities such as cricket, rounders, rugby, football and archery arts, crafts and games. All are welcome to attend.

Game on for Andy BIRSTALL VICTORIA host the Andy Dyson Memorial Match against Drighlington tomorrow (Sat).

The Vic are the holders of the trophy, which was created in memory of Andy Dyson, who died in a road accident in January 2008, aged 17.

Andy's parents Steve and Carol kindly donated the collection at Andy's funeral to the Birstall club.

The trophy and annual match in Andy's name were created between the Vic and Drighlington as he played for both the clubs in his short life and both sides want as many spectators as possible to come and celebrate his memory tomorrow.

Kick-off is 2.30pm at White Lee tomorrow.

at Leigh Sports Village A RECORD attendance of more than 10,000 fans saw Batley Bulldogs make newly-promoted Leigh work hard on their big day at Leigh Sports Village.

Championship coach of the Year John Kear’s side had come intent on being party poopers but his side showed their class, forming a guard of honour as the Super League new boys walked out.

The visitors then woke the Centurions from a slumber by firstly taking the lead and later levelling it up before succumbing to that gulf in class between a full-time and part-time side.

The hosts made a spluttering start when Ben Reynolds knocked-on from the kick-off.

Returning Lee Smith took the grubber on the last tackle of that opening set but it was a scrappy start by both sides, moreso the Centurions.

There was a stoppage due to an injury to Batley’s Brad Day and follow-

ing that his side were awarded a penalty.

David Scott took a great pass to burst through the Centurions’ defence to score on nine minutes and Pat Walker converted the first of his four goals.

This was what the hosts needed to wake them up after probably a week of celebrations and first Reynolds was held on the line and half-back partner Burns was a fingertip from touching down.

Liam Hood forced a drop-out after a runaround with Burns and from the resulting set they levelled the game up on 17 minutes.

On the fourth tackle Brad Fash was held short of the line by five defenders.

A quick play later and the ball found crowd favourite Fuifui Moimoi, who crashed over by the posts and Smith converted the first of his seven from seven.

Leigh then took control of the game and, within four minutes, the lead – a long cut out pass sending in winger Adam Higson, whose acrobatic finish

at the corner brought the house down, as did Smith’s touchline effort.

The visitors responded in great fashion though and levelled the game up on 25 minutes as Alistair Leak burrowed over from the play the ball.

However, the home side responded again with two tries in four minutes to lead 24-12.

On 29 minutes, from a scrum, Reynolds and Burns combined to put Cory Paterson over and four minutes later, following a penalty, sub Lewis Foster – who had just entered the fray – scored with his first touch, barging over despite the attentions of three Bulldogs defenders, for his first try for the club.

Then, as the Bulldogs mounted an attack, Moimoi put in the legitimate hit of the day as he collided with prop Alex Rowe full-on, forcing him to knock-on.

The Centurions maintained the

ascendancy thereafter and made the game safe on 46 minutes with a welldeserved try for Burns, who scrambled over the line on the third tackle after the visitors had given up possession 30 metres from their own line.

Both sides failed to respect possession at times.

Pat Walker forced another drop-out with his grubber but the Bulldogs attacked without success.

It was party time for the Centurions supporters as they increased their lead on 64 minutes following a ball steal.

Reynolds put in a cross-field bomb to the corner which was palmed back by Matty Dawson into the hands of Willie Tonga for the centre to crash over.

The Bulldogs refused to roll over though and responded with a third try of their own three minutes later following a Dominic Brambani grubber which ricocheted in-goal and the outgoing skipper Keegan Hirst dropped on to the ball to score.

The sides then swapped tries in the final seven minutes, firstly after Moimoi had been held on the line Dayne Weston crashed over from close range and, with the last play of the game, quick hands down the right channel saw Batley winger Wayne Reittie tip-toe over.

Rams set up Shield semi-final tie at Bradford after solid Oldham win Super 8s Championship Shield

at the Tetley’s Stadium AFTER a real arm wrestle in the opening exchanges, Dewsbury Rams eased to a win over Oldham that secures their place in this weekend’s Championship Shield semi-final.

The Rams required victory to guarantee fourth spot in the Championship Shield, while Oldham headed into the clash with their Championship status already secure, but unable to reach the knock-out stages of the competition.

Three tries in the second quarter of the game gave the home side a 16-0 advantage at the interval, and they added two more after the break to emerge comfortable victors.

Following a scrappy start to the encounter, during which both sides enjoyed territory in their opponents’ 20-metre area, the Rams took the lead at the mid-way point of the first half.

On-loan winger Etu Uaisele, who was an outstanding performer throughout the afternoon for Dewsbury, latched on to the end of Josh Guzdek’s looping pass to crash over on the left.

The try came after Richard Lepori was shown a yellow card for holding down, following an Andy Kain show-

and-go break.

Hemingway added the conversion to make it 6-0 and the Rams added to their lead six minutes later through an almost identical play as the ball was again moved left for Jason Crookes to sprint over.

Shane Grady deputised as kicker for the substituted Hemingway, but pulled his effort in front of the posts.

The Rams continued to dominate proceedings during the minutes that followed, but there was more than an element of luck involved in the build up to their third try.

Panic in the Oldham ranks as they carried the ball from their own line resulted in a spilled ball, which Kain hacked forward and touched down in the right corner.

half-time approached.

The interjection of referee Jack Smith dictated the pace of the game for large periods during the opening exchanges of the second half, and it was from consecutive penalties that the visitors scored their first try.

Kenny Hughes showed excellent pace and footwork to out-fox the Rams defence and jink his way over under the posts.

Lewis Palfrey converted to make it 16-6, and then booted a 40/20 from the restart set.

But Oldham spilled the ball on the first tackle for the scrum, allowing the hosts to take play to the opposite end of the field, where Lucas Walshsaw showed great speed and strength to charge over the line.

Tempers flared shortly after when Hughes tackled Luke Adamson off the ball, resulting in a minor scuffle in front of the Oldham posts.

Grady hammered over the resultant penalty to make it 24-6 with just over 20 minutes remaining.

A second minor skirmish followed, with a number of players from both teams wading in, and referee Smith this time opted to sin-bin Jamal Chisholm.

Grady once again obliged with the penalty to put four scores between the sides, before crashing over for four points after Oldham had coughed up the ball from the base of the scrum.

Kain then saw a potential second try ruled out for obstruction, which paved the way for Oldham to add their second try in the final minute.

Keiron Gill plucked a deft chip out of the air to stroll over under the posts and, with Lewis Palfrey substituted, Lepori added the conversion.

The kick-off to restart play proved to be the last action of the game.

The win keeps the Rams’ season alive for another week and, though Oldham will have been disappointed to end their season with defeat, they can reflect on a campaign in which their key objective of Championship survival was met.

Sykes calls time on boxing career DEWSBURY boxing legend Gary Sykes has retired with immediate effect and has withdrawn from his upcoming fight with Sean Dodd.

The former British super-featherweight champion, 32, was scheduled to face Dodd in Liverpool on October 15.

Sykes (28-5-6KO) was attempting to rebound from being knocked out in the second round of his bout with Olympic gold medallist Luke Campbell in March, but says he is no longer motivated to compete.

In a statement released this week Sykes said: “I would like to announce that with a heavy heart I’m retiring from boxing.

“Boxing has been the only thing I’ve known for 17 years so it’s not a decision I take lightly and understand there will be regrets, but I just feel like I’m chasing my old self.

“Its no disrespect to Sean Dodd, but I think five years ago I would have walked this fight. Now, the hunger and desire is not what it once was, I want people to remember me at my best and not on the slide trying to recapture past form.

“It was a quick decision, I’d been looking good in sparring and everything was there, but one morning I woke up and thought, ‘I don’t want to train today’ which has happened many times, I have acted on it for the first time and THAT was the moment I knew I had to retire.

“I’ve had a great career, winning two British titles and an English title with Julian McGowan who was always more than a coach to me.

“I had a glittering amateur career under Keith Tate also winiing senior ABA, Junior ABA, NABC titles as well as boxing for England across Europe.

“I’ve had a great career with help along the way from great coaches like Mark Hurley, Steve Wood, Sean O’Hagan, John Tallan,

BATLEY BULLDOGS coach John Kear is hoping to end his time at the club on a high this weekend.

DEWSBURY RAMS coach Glenn Morrison is hoping his side can go one better than they did last year and make the Championship Shield Final.

After last weekend’s 30-12 victory over Oldham, the Rams secured fourth spot in the Shield table and set up a trip to Odsal to face Bradford on Sunday (3pm).

The game will be the fifth time the two sides have locked horns this season, with two wins apiece for both sides and Morrison is confident his team can pull off an upset.

He said: “We are going there knowing that we can compete against them.

“It’s 2-2 this season, we beat them at Odsal when we played them earlier in the season so we know we can get a result.

“It’s finals footy and we need to knuckle down and try and go that one step further than last season.”

If the Rams are to make it through to the final of the Shield, they will have to do it without a trio of players who are unavailable.

Mitch Stringer will miss the game at Odsal with a knee injury and onloan duo Lucas Walshaw and Etu Uaisele will be unavailable against their parent club.

It has been a frustrating season for the Rams, with some good wins set against some disappointng losses, including defeats to both relegated Cumbrian sides in the Shield.

However, the former Bradford man admitted that although it had not

been ideal, his side have achieved their goals this season.

“There has been some really good performances with some not-so-good ones.

“It has been our consistency that has let us down this season, a lot of which has not been

helped by injuries.

“But we are hoping to address that next season with our conditioning and stop those problems.”

The club has also this week revealed their final six designs for their 2017 home and away shirts.

Designs have been selected from more than 50 submissions made by supporters.

Fans can vote for their favourite on the Dewsbury Rams Twitter and Facebook pages and the winning designs will be revealed at the Fans Forum event on Wednesday September 28.

The closing dates for feedback and votes is this Sunday.
