– PRIME MINISTER THERESA MAY DEWSBURY MP Paula Sherriff has slammed Prime Minister Theresa May for her response in Parliament as she skirted a question about the downgrading of Dewsbury & District Hospital’s A&E services.

At Prime Minister’s Questions on Wednesday, Ms Sherriff asked the PM to confirm that all services at Dewsbury Hospital and Huddersfield Royal Infirmary would remain open – including full A&E provision.

The Prime Minister answered: “The honourable lady knows that, yes, I was asked about Dewsbury A&E and I can confirm Dewsbury A&E is not closing.

In a statement yesterday Labour MP Ms Sherriff said: “I was dismayed at Theresa May’s answer to my question in Wednesday’s PMQs. “She omitted to mention the significant downgrade that Dewsbury and District Hospital’s A&E department is facing.

“Following the downgrade, all acute cases, including those who are seriously ill or injured, will be transferred to Pinderfields Hospital as there won’t be the facilities to treat them at Dewsbury’s A&E department.

– DEWSBURY MP PAULA SHERRIFF “The PM also failed to mention Huddersfield Royal Infirmary and the fact that their A&E department is facing closure plans – these plans will leave the whole of Kirklees, some 420,000 people, without full A&E provision.”

Ms Sherriff took the matter further and posed another question in the Commons yesterday (Thursday) to the Leader of the House, Andrea Leadsom. She said: “Could the Prime Minister come to the House and either reassure local people that services are safe, or apologise for her scaremongering comments when we were just highlighting that services were under threat?”

On a recent visit to Thornhill Cricket Club during the election campaign, Mrs May accused her opponents of “scaremongering” over the threat of the A&E services

being downgraded or closed. But Mid Yorkshire NHS Hospitals Trust is planning to centralise A&E care for the most seriously ill patients at Pinderfields hospital in Wakefield, with Dewsbury Hospital’s A&E becoming an urgent care centre for treating minor ailments from this September.

There are also uncertain plans to completely rebuild Huddersfield Royal Infirmary, with the new building not having any A&E provision.

Ms Sherriff added: “Not only did the Prime Minister incorrectly accuse us of ‘scaremongering’, she has also gone further this time in covering up the significant downgrade plans at Dewsbury and District hospital and the impact that these will have on local people.”

Teacher is banned after pupil ‘affair’

By Staff Reporters A MARRIED school teacher from Dewsbury has been banned from the classroom for life after having sex with a pupil.

Amena Nazam-Khan, 35, was teaching at Tong High School in Bradford when she had a nine-month affair with an 18-year-old student, a misconduct panel heard.

The affair allegedly started in January 2015 when the boy, known as Pupil A, was 17 and being directly taught by Mrs NazamKhan.

Mrs Nazam-Khan, who is believed to live in Thornhill Lees, sent a string of explicit pictures and messages to the boy through Facebook and mobile phone apps, and reportedly took him out to restaurants and hotel rooms.

She also invited him to her home where they had sex, a hearing of the National Council for Teaching and Leadership was told.

An anonymous email to bosses at the school, where she had been employed since 2009, meant she was suspended last August.

She initially denied the affair, but reportedly continued to see the boy, who turned 18 in the spring of 2015, for another two months before they split.

Following her suspension, Mrs NazamKhan dumped Pupil A and messaged him: “From now on, you will never discuss our relationship with anyone.

“Can I also finally request that all my photos are deleted. All my messages are too.

Because I don’t want any other disgrace by school finding them.”

The fling lasted until October 2015 and the professional conduct panel was convened earlier this month.

She was found guilty of unacceptable professional conduct. Banning her from teaching for life, decision-maker Alan Meyrick said: “The relationship spanned several months.

“The panel do not consider that Mrs Nazam-Khan has shown any remorse for her actions and the impact upon the pupil. Her remorse is largely for the impact upon her family and herself.”

Mrs Nazam-Khan left the school in March 2016 and did not attend the misconduct hearing in Coventry.

GP surgery axed as private firm ditches NHS contract

By David Bentley HUNDREDS of Dewsbury residents have been left searching for a new doctor after a GP surgery announced it is to close at the end of July.

The Victoria Medical Practice, based in Dewsbury Health Centre, has told patients it will shut on July 31.

The practice is managed by a company called Malling Health, which has ended its contract with the NHS, and the North Kirklees Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) says that it cannot find another provider to take it over.

The CCG is made up of GP practices across the district and is led by local doctors and health professionals who work together to design, plan and buy (commission) local health services.

According to the practice website, its lead GP is Dr Jeremy Sager, with a dozen more employees including nurses, health care assistants and office staff.

Dewsbury MP Paula Sherriff has requested an urgent meeting with CCG officials after being contacted by worried patients.

Ms Sherriff said: “I am extremely concerned that the first notification I received of this issue was from worried constituents and not from the CCG. Constituents are telling me of their difficulties in registering at new practices and I will be seeking assurance from the CCG that everything possible was

News In Brief Police appeal over nightclub assault BATLEY: Police are appealing for information after an 18-year-old man was seriously assaulted at a nightclub.

The victim was in the TBC club on Bradford Road when he was attacked by a man who was part of a bigger group.

He was hit on the back of the head with a bottle and hit in the face, causing serious facial injuries which included having a number of front teeth knocked out.

The incident happened at around 3am on January 21 and police, who only released details this week, are looking for a white male, in his early- to mid-20s with short brown hair. He was around 5ft 10in tall, of muscular build and looked to be wearing a grey t-shirt.

PC Teresa McCarter of Batley & Spen District Police said: “I would strongly urge anyone who was at the nightclub back in January and witnessed anything in connection with this incident to come forward to the police.”

Information should be passed to the police via 101, quoting crime reference 13170031721.

College wins silver done to prevent the closure of this busy practice and that robust plans have been put in place to ensure that no-one is left without a GP following this decision.

“At a time when our health services are under unprecedented strain and our hospitals are facing downgrades and closures, I need to be confident that the best interests of my constituents are being put before the financial decisions of our cash-strapped NHS.” A spokesman for the NHS North Kirklees CCG said: “Services at

“IMH have continued to deliver services for almost two years more than specified in the original contract but for reasons out of their control they are now unable to continue to do this.

“Unfortunately, the CCG has been unable to find a suitable alternative provider to take over the contract so has reluctantly made the decision to close the practice.

“We appreciate that this will be inconvenient and upsetting for patients and our priority now is to ensure that they continue to have access to GP services.

“We have written to all registered patients offering advice on how to register with a new GP and we will be holding drop-in sessions at the practice to support this process.”

The remaining GP practices operating from Dewsbury Health Centre, Calder View Surgery and Eightlands Surgery, are unaffected.

DEWSBURY: Kirklees College has received a silver ranking for the quality of its teaching under the new Teaching Excellence Framework.

The college, including its Dewsbury campus, was one of 116 institutions, including universities and colleges, to receive the accolade, with just 59 achieving gold.

Craig Tupling, assistant principal for higher education at the college, said: “We are delighted and very proud to achieve the TEF silver award, which is recognition of the exceptional experience our higher education students receive when they study at the college.”

Police target nuisance bikers NUISANCE bikers are causing problems for residents in Batley – again.

Now, following an increase in complaints, police are appealing for information despite a successful operation in April, when several arrests were made and bikes seized.

Officers want details of incidents involving anti-social behaviour on the roads and information about types of bikes, descriptions of riders and locations of bike lock-ups.

Inspector Rauf, of Batley & Spen neighbourhood policing team, said: “Nuisance bikes

can cause distress and antisocial behaviour with noise nuisance, as well as endanger the public and their riders. We have seen a spike in the number of calls in recent weeks.

“We would especially like any details or descriptions of the riders, the bikes and the locations, to assist with our enquiries as we are committed to tackling this issue.

“There are safe and lawful ways for people to enjoy their hobby and we hope the steps we are taking will reassure residents that we will not tolerate their use on the roads

Cancellation of golf tournament brings charity to the fore!

QUICK-thinking staff at Dewsbury District Golf Club were able to do their bit for charity after the cancellation of a ProAm (professionalamateur) tournament on Wednesday.

Sacks of readyprepared potatoes, onions, cauliflowers and other vegetables were shipped off to the local Salvation Army branch in Mirfield, so as to not waste the food.

Dawn Hargreaves, head of catering at the club, had made enough food to feed over 120 men who

were scheduled to play in the 37th ProAm tournament.

She and her husband, who run their own catering business, Pinnacle Dining, decided they could not see the good food go to waste after a downpour.

Dawn said: “The chefs had worked hard and there was loads of food.

“We decided to call the local Salvation Army and they were here within six minutes to collect it.

“It was a nice thing to be able to do on a miserable day.”

News In Brief Teen burglar stole irreplaceable photos MIRFIELD: A teenager broke into a couple's house and stole a camera that contained irreplaceable pictures.

The 17-year-old, who cannot be named for legal reasons, raided the Stoney Lane property when the victim was away helping her mother because her father was seriously ill at the time.

The victim, 50, whose husband suffers from an inoperable brain tumour, said she was devastated that the thief took "precious memories that cannot be replaced."

A neighbour had called to say that she had been burgled, and she returned to find the rear patio door smashed and a Samsung television, a Blu-ray player and the Panasonic camera containing the photos all missing.

The teenager, from the Ravensthorpe area, pleaded guilty at Kirklees Magistrates’ Court to burglary and was sentenced to a 12-month youth rehabilitation order with an electronically monitored curfew running for six weeks. He must also pay £200 compensation.

Mugging gang hunted LIVERSEDGE: A 17-year-old was attacked by a group of men whilst walking home.

The boy was on Headlands Street at around 10.15pm last Wednesday when he was approached by four men. One of the suspects pulled the victim's t-shirt over his head and then hit him before the other three men joined in and started assaulting him. They fled with a navy blue Lacoste bag and cash.

PC Paul Campbell of Kirklees CID said: "We are investigating this robbery and would like to speak to anyone who saw what happened or has information.

"The suspects were described as four Asian males. One of the males was 5ft 8in, skinny, with short black hair, a blue bomber jacket with his hood up and black jogging bottoms."

The event at Birstall’s Oakwell Hall was set up to celebrate what would have been the late Batley & Spen MP’s birthday three days before, on June 22.

Mrs Cox had always wanted to take part in a fun run at Oakwell, so one of her closest friends, Julie Smith, organised the race to mark her birthday in a way she would have enjoyed.

Kim Leadbeater, Mrs Cox’s sister, and her husband Brendan Cox started the race alongside Izzard.

Speaking after the event, Kim said: “It’s been wonderful. We had the Great Get Together last week-

end, which was fantastic, and it’s been followed by a second great event.

“It’s been non-stop fun and warmth and people coming together. There’s a real appetite for bringing people together.

The day started at 9am with the Batley Community Choir singing before the runners set off on the first 2.5k family fun run at 9.30.

The cross-country challenge then started at 11am and there was also a Mascots race, which included Battler the Bulldog and Dewsbury Rams’ Roger the Ram. All money raised on the day went to the Jo Cox Foundation.

Hospital joins Uni in drive for new nurses DEWSBURY Hospital will host a new nursing school and degree programme after the Mid Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust and University of Bradford teamed up in a bid to attract new nursing students into the area.

The scheme aims to boost nursing recruitment for the Trust and widen degree-course participation in the district, with up to 100 nursing students recruited by March next year.

A memorandum of understanding, to establish an official partnership between the Trust and the university, was signed at a ceremony at Dewsbury and District Hospital on Tuesday.

Bradford University have agreed to offer its existing pre-registration

nursing programme to students at Dewsbury and the Trust will offer registered nurse posts to students who successfully complete the programme.

Ruth Girham, head of nursing at the university, said: “The University of Bradford School of Nursing was thrilled to be asked by the Mid Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust to work with them to support the development of their nursing workforce.

“The School of Nursing has an excellent reputation for nurse education and is looking forward to working closely with the Trust on this exciting new development.

“This is a great opportunity for local people to access a nursing degree programme near to home.”

Hunt for footpath attacker AN 18-YEAR-OLD woman was attacked by a dog walker on a footpath late at night.

She was approached by a male believed to be in his 50s on June 10 at around 11.30pm on the path off Grange View in Thornhill.

She sustained a head injury and need hospital treatment.

The suspect, a white male of medium build, had hair receding at the front and shaved at the back. He wore jeans, a green jack-

et and glasses and was walking a white and black dog, similar to a spaniel, which was off the lead.

Detective Constable Nicola Keitch of Kirklees Safeguarding Unit, said: “This was a terrifying incident for the young woman, which left her with a head injury and incredibly distressed.”

CLECKHEATON: A man appeared in court charged in connection with a brutal attack on a pensioner on the Spen Valley Greenway.

A 76-year-old woman was approached from behind on May 5 and hit over the head with a hammer as the man tried to grab her purse.

Colin Winteringham, 56, of Well Grove, Sheepridge, Huddersfield, appeared before Kirklees magistrates on Wednesday facing three robbery charges and a further eight charges including burglary, theft, possession of an offensive weapon, and fraud.

He is also accused of another robbery at Heron Foods in Dewsbury, where he allegedly pushed a woman as he took her handbag.

The third robbery was from a man in Fartown, Huddersfield, on May 29.

Winteringham was remanded in custody and sent for trial at Leeds Crown Court.

Scott joins Cabinet DEWSBURY: Dewsbury East Labour councillor Cathy Scott has been appointed to the Kirklees Council Cabinet.

She will share the adults and public health portfolio with Heckmondwike councillor Viv Kendrick, alongside having responsibility for democracy commission work.

Batley West councillor Shabir Pandor will stay on as deputy leader of the council.

DEWSBURY: A man was fined £40 for breaching his curfew for seven minutes – because he was putting his bins out.

Alex Grogan, 21, of Alexandra Crescent, was given a community order in April following a conviction for criminal damage, which meant he had to remain indoors between 7am-7pm.

Kirklees magistrates heard he was out of the house during these hours for seven minutes on June 3. Grogan said he had been putting the bins out.

By Zoe Shackleton BATLEY & SPEN MP Tracy Brabin put forward a parliamentary motion this week in a bid to officially make the Great Get Together an annual event.

The Great Get Together movement was inspired by Jo Cox to bring communities together up and down the country and celebrate her “more in common” legacy.

Over 120,000 events were held over the weekend of June 16-18 to mark a year since Mrs Cox was murdered, and Ms Brabin has tabled an

Early Day Motion (EDM) in Westminster for the Great Get Together to become an annual celebration.

An EDM is a formal motion for debate in the House of Commons, where MPs ‘sign’ to show their support.

The motion comes as Mrs Cox’s coat of arms was unveiled last Saturday during a family day in the Commons, led by speaker John Bercow and attended by her husband Brendan Cox, her children and a host of MPs, including Ms Brabin.

Ms Brabin said: “The Great Get Together was clearly an

incredible success, locally and nationally.

“So much fun was had and I know many local groups are already planning next year’s events.

“I’ve put this motion down so MPs can show their commitment to the importance of remembering that we have far more in common than that which divides us and reaffirm their support to the Great Get Together becoming an annual event.”

The motion has received support from prominent MPs including Hilary Benn, Rachel Reeves and Jonathan Ashworth.

Smoker? Obese? Go to the back of the queue SMOKERS and people who are overweight could be penalised in new local health guidelines.

The North Kirklees and Greater Huddersfield Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs) are adopting a system in which smokers or obese people needing surgery will be put to the bottom of the waiting list – unless they kick the habit or lose weight.

Those who co-operate could be moved up the queue if they improve their health, but those who refuse may have their surgery delayed for six months to a year.

The move is for non-urgent operations only. The rules would not apply to critical lifesaving surgery or procedures such as cancer treatment.

Figures show that 14 per

cent of adults in North Kirklees are smokers, with almost 24 per cent classed as overweight.

Health bosses will implement the new policy for adults who have a Body Mass Index (BMI) of more than 30.

Many people have criticised the use of BMI as an indication of health, as people who have a high muscle mass could have a BMI over 30 but not be overweight.

A CCGs spokesperson said: “We are not limiting surgery.

We will be encouraging patients who are overweight or smoke to get fit before undergoing routine, planned surgery.

“People who smoke or are obese experience more complications during and after sur-

gery and can take longer to recover.

“This move offers people the opportunity of the best possible clinical outcome as well as the longer-term benefits of a healthier lifestyle and is supported by Kirklees Council public health specialists.”

Those deemed as overweight will have 12 months to get their BMI below 30, and if they lose 10 per cent of their weight but still have a BMI above 30 they will be listed for surgery.

Smokers will have to be smoke-free for four weeks prior to surgery but will be put on a six-month stop smoking plan to help them quit and will still be listed for surgery even if they fail to give up smoking after six months.

The truths no-one will discuss HERE are some uncomfortable truths, hanging like a stinking shroud over the crucified skeleton of Grenfell Tower in London.

No-one seems willing to acknowledge them. Not the fire investigators, wondering why no-one’s asking how many tens or dozens more cremated remains are strewn about the place, and certainly not the cynical politicians still doing their damnedest to score cheap points off this tragedy.

It’s like being at the funeral of a complete bastard, where people don’t look each other in the eye for fear of giving away their real feelings about the deceased.

The official death toll is stuck on 79, like the hand of a millennium clock that can’t quite tick through to midnight in case it heralds doom and destruction.

But no-one can bring them-

We should. McDonnell’s clear implication, as he supported ‘a Day of Rage’ (only a few of his loyal communist foot soldiers turned up), is that Tory austerity caused this needless disaster.

He just about stopped short of accusing Theresa May and George Osborne of nailing shut the fire exits and throw-

If McDonnell wants to insist on culpability, he could at least do the dead and missing the service of pinpointing all of the suspects – which includes himself.

So, how many are dead?

Unless forensic science is even more remarkable than that dizzy actress Emilia Fox magics up in Silent Witness, we’ll never know. There could be a hundred or more cremated bodies.

But surely, you say, they’d have been reported missing?

Not if no-one knew they were there. Not if they were entire families, here illegally, crammed into rooms by gangster landlords.

Remember the 50-to-a-terraced house scandal of the Kozee Sleep slavemasters in Ravensthorpe?

In that respect London is a huge, open sewer of criminality and exploitation – and it’s largely thanks to the opendoor attempts by Labour politicians from Gordon Brown onwards keen to create an immigrant client state.

For 13 years under Labour all and sundry were welcomed whether there were sufficient hospitable beds, GP capacity, classrooms or – importantly in this instance – housing for them, or not.

Illegal immigrants? We go through the motions then turn a blind eye as they melt away into Britain’s Grenfell Towers of anonymity.

A cash, black-market economy at best, a drugs, slave and prostitution industry at worst – that is what migration under Labour created.

And true, it is NOT what started that horrible fire. But local authorities aren’t skint just because of Tory cuts – it’s also because they are weighed down by the burden of trying to provide public services for a sea of immigrants that no-one seems inclined to halt – trying to provide for the victims of Grenfell, ironically.

Couldn’t that be one of the reasons that corners are cut when councils are trying to get value for money?

But when something goes horribly wrong, you can expect the bleeding hearts to blame anyone, blame everyone, except themselves.

It’s the rich wot did it.

O WHO is to blame, because clearly no-one will rest until someone takes a fall?

The snowflakes probably don’t even know there’s a difference (which in John McDonnell and Corbyn’s case, actually there isn’t.)

Like Josef Stalin, Mao, Fidel Castro and Hugo Chavez, the Glastonistas will only waken to the reality of extremist rule when they’re the ones being dragged kicking and screaming into the night. Couldn’t happen? I don’t think those starry-eyed youngsters who swept Adolf to power thought it could, either.

For now, however, it’s all good clean fun, bringing down the establishment and leaving someone else to clean up the mess – which is a perfect metaphor for Glastonbury (pictured).

Air-brained hypocrites, paying over the odds to listen to false prophets, all of it in a sh*t hole of their own making, and which will all be someone else’s fault. That’s Socialism for you!

courageous men and women who tried to save them can and probably will get a kicking, from the faulty fridge manufacturers to the idiot designer of these social monstrosities.

Tory cuts? Already getting it, notwithstanding that public spending as a proportion of GDP has been higher than all but two of 13 years under Labour. Corbyn, McDonnell and Co won’t mention that.

Councillors and officers will get a ration, but a token resignation apart they’ll survive intact. These organisations specialise in backside covering.

The contractors will hide behind rules that were blatantly unsatisfactory, but it’s a bit late for those lost souls to re-write them now.

Lessons will be learned, steps taken, blah blah blah.

There will be an inquiry or inquiries .... move along

folks, nothing left to see ...

But no-one will address the underlying issues of unfettered mass migration, the underground economy that runs entire swathes of cities like London.

That’s too difficult for the police to acknowledge, and too complicated for the politicians for whom no corpse is ever too cold to take advantage of. Shameful.

And what no-one will ever do, is accept that creating unlicensed Towers of Babel full of often uneducated, nonEnglish speaking fugitives from authority, is a disaster waiting to happen.

Grenfell Tower was a 24storey ghetto that everyone at all levels of authority turned a blind eye to – and was a disaster waiting to happen.

It should be left standing as a permanent memorial to the country we’ve created.

IN LIGHT of the sensitive subject above, I find myself in a difficult situation. I’ve been tipped off to a story yet to unfold – a crime to be committed (or rather an ‘accident’ yet to happen) for which plans are already in place.

I have to be somewhat cryptic, for obvious reasons, but if in the coming weeks or months a significant Batley landmark burns down then I guess my source will have known what they were talking about.

I’ll push things about as far as I can, the implication being that while listed buildings can’t be knocked down for housing, if they sadly go up in flames ... “Well heck, Mr Planning Officer, we might as well build some new homes on that plum site, because it’s no good for anything else now...”

It might be complete, fabricated baloney. But it might not.

Dad ko’d and abuse scrawled on walls Vigil for victims of mosque terror A VIGIL to remember victims of the recent Finsbury Park terror attack was held last weekend.

The steps of Batley Town Hall saw people from the community, of faith and no faith, join together and pay their respects last Saturday afternoon.

Reverend Mark Umpleby, associate priest for the United Benefice of Batley, spoke alongside Rev Martin Naylor and Batley & Spen MP Tracy Brabin.

Rev Umpleby said: “It is important that here in Batley we come together to remember and pray for the victims. To remember together as Christians and Muslims, people of no faith or belief, united in our love and compassion and determine that our community won't be divided in acts of hate.”

Saied Laher, chair of the Indian Muslim Welfare Society (IMWS) said: “Acts of terrorism are the actions of warped minds filled with hate through biased and misrepresentations of an individual community.

“Muslims across the UK will at this time feel vulnerable. We cannot let these cowardly actions of a terrorist separate our communities. We must stand together.”

A MAN was knocked unconscious in his home by thugs who covered his walls in racist graffiti.

Father-of-three Jamil Azam, 42, said he was wearing ear defenders whilst using a drill and did not hear the intruders when they broke into his home in Heckmondwike at around 9.30am last Wednesday, June 21.

He was struck from behind by an unknown object and was unconscious for a few moments.

After calling the police and an ambulance he saw the graffiti on the wall.

He said: “My back was turned and I didn't hear a thing.

“I woke up with a sore

head and I felt a bump on the back of it.

“Then I saw the graffiti on the walls above the staircase.

“I was in shock - I wondered if it was real.”

On one wall, the graffiti read: “Pakis out. We need a final solution. #Machester.”

The hashtag was misspelt.

The family was moved out of its home in Westfield Street for two days while police investigated the scene and he was treated in hospital for a minor head injury before being discharged.

Detective Inspector John Charlton, of Kirklees CID, said: “I would like to reassure the local community that offences of this nature are extremely rare.

“We are taking the matter extremely seriously and we have increased our patrols in the area.

“We are conducting extensive forensic enquiries in an effort to identify the person or people responsible and are continuing our enquiries locally.

“I would like to hear from anyone who witnessed anything or anyone who noticed anyone acting suspiciously within this vicinity at around this time to get in touch.”

Anyone with any information about this incident, or saw anyone acting suspiciously near the area is asked to contact Kirklees CID via 101 quoting crime reference 13170282561.

MP slams ‘shameful’ Tory-DUP deal DEWSBURY MP Paula Sherriff slammed the Government's “shameful arrogance” after the Conservatives struck a deal with the Democratic Unionist Party.

She spoke out after the Tories agreed an additional £1bn of funding for Northern Ireland to secure the support of the DUP. Concessions to the DUP include cash for infrastructure projects in the province and the Government has also agreed to drop plans

to introduce means-testing for winter fuel allowance and end the pensions ‘triple lock’.

Ms Sherriff said: “Hospitals, schools and other public services in my constituency continue to face unprecedented cuts. How does this government justify finding £1.5bn in order to achieve self-preservation? Is there any money in the magic money tree for the Dewsbury constituency?

“Whilst people in my constituency and across our

region are expected to endure cuts to our essential public services in the name of this government's austerity cuts, the Tories have found more than £100m per DUP MP to prop up their weakened Government.

“On top of this they are still giving away billions in capital gains tax, corporation tax and inheritance tax.

“There can be no justification for this government's shameful arrogance.”

Stun gun attack BATLEY: A teenager who used a stun gun disguised as an iPhone to hurt another student has been given a referral order.

The 17-year-old admitted possessing a weapon adapted for the discharge of an electronic charge, assault occasioning actual bodily harm and possession of cannabis.

Kirklees Magistrates’ Court heard that the victim and the defendant were on a bus to college when the assault took place on January 5. The victim said he felt like he was being electrocuted.

The defendant was sentenced to a 12month referral order, which means he could be subject to a programme of interventions and activities to address his behaviour. He must also pay £100 compensation to the victim and £85 costs.

Another proud showing Letter of the Week: Tim Wood, The Old Colonial, Mirfield Dear Sir, The sun shone for us on last Saturday’s Armed Forces Day service and parade, held at the Old Colonial memorial site on Dunbottle Lane.

The RBL padre, Mr Ian Grange, led the service and address, with Town Councillor and former mayor Sean Guy giving a short talk on artefacts that he found on the Somme.

Many thanks to Mrs Sue Doubell for the donation of the basalt rock brought home by her father, Robert Frettlöhr, who had fought at Monte Cassino in 1944.

Sallies MBE inspected the cadets and standards of 868 Sqdn ATC, whose drill and deportment was, once again, of the highest order.

Their band also thrilled those who attended with a brief display.

This year’s event was not as prominent as hoped for, as there had been some uncertainty over where the event was to be held.

Many thanks also to Mirfield Round Table, who cosponsored all the free food, although we did procure some rather excellent cheap bread to keep the costs low.

ters like Evan Davis (Newsnight), and Victoria Derbyshire their ridiculously inflated salaries.

MP hits out at Education Secretary over school cuts

By Staff Reporters AFTER sending a scathing letter to the Prime Minister highlighting her anger at proposed cuts to local hospital services, Dewsbury MP Paula Sherriff has now hit out at Education Secretary Justine Greening over school funding.

Ms Sherriff has this week written to Ms Greening as the Conservative Government’s proposed funding formula threatens school budgets in her Dewsbury consituency.

In an official letter she wrote: “Here in Dewsbury, 50 out of 50 schools will lose out under the Conservative Government’s new schools funding formula - not one will gain.

“The Dewsbury constituency has a diverse population with areas of significant deprivation. Against this background and with the associated barriers to achievement, I am keen to ensure that every possible step is taken to ensure every child in my constituency is given the opportunity to reach their full potential.

“This clearly requires all our efforts to overcome the economic and geographic barriers that stand in their way.”

expressed her anger at Ms Greening’s response to her in the House of Commons, when the Tory minister said: “The point of the fair funding is that we can no longer accept a country in which different children have different amounts of funding going into their education just because of where they are growing up.”

This came after the Education Secretary had acknowledged the funding problem at a Social Mobility Commission event, when she admitted that a child living in one of the country’s most disadvantaged areas was 27 times more likely to go to an inadequate school than a child in the most advantaged area.

Ms Sherriff wrote: “I am perplexed by your response to me in the House.

odds with your acceptance of the barriers faced by children - just because of where they are growing up - and I am appalled at your incredibly short-sighted plans which will reduce levels of funding for schools in a constituency like Dewsbury.

“In 2015, it was a Conservative manifesto pledge that under a future Conservative Government the amount of money following your child into school would be protected.

“With headteachers across my constituency now telling me that your funding formula will lead to significant cuts to teaching, support staff and resources at their school - with letters being sent to parents asking for contributions to school funds - perhaps you would like to visit my constituency in order to hear for yourself their serious concerns, and to reassure local people that you will reconsider and respect your 2015 pledge.”

Ms Sherriff added on social media: “The situations with school funding is utterly indefensible.

“The government cannot go on allowing class sizes to increase, staff levels to be cut and school clubs and extra curricular activities axed.”

5 Years

It’s great to be back working for you AST week, I was sworn in for a second term as the MP for Dewsbury, Mirfield, Denby Dale and Kirkburton.

It was one of the proudest and most humbling moments of my life and, as I said in my column in The Press a couple of weeks ago, I’m determined to keep standing up for local people and our area.

I’ve set out to do just that, and from speaking out against NHS cuts at the Party in the Park rally organised by ‘Hands off HRI’, to taking the government to task over their cuts to school funding; and from speaking out in Parliament against the Tories’ damaging public sector pay freeze, to calling for our area to get its fair share as the PM does a costly deal with the DUP, it’s great to be back!

In all seriousness, there is a great deal to get stuck into, and I’m not wasting any time.

The election, just a few weeks ago, was called by the Prime Minister with the sole purpose of bolstering her majority in Parliament.

But instead she put her party’s interests ahead of the good of the country and now she’s doing it again.

Whilst people here in the Dewsbury constituency and across our region are expected to endure cuts to our essential public services in the name of this govern-

ment’s austerity cuts, the Tories have found more than 100 million per DUP MP to prop up their weakened Government.

On top of this they are still giving away billions in capital gains tax, corporation tax and inheritance tax.

As the Government focus their efforts on shamelessly clinging to power, our firefighters, police officers, and medical services continue to show extraordinary professionalism.

Over recent months we have tragically been reminded of the dangers that our emergency services heroically run towards.

The public sector pay freeze has to end – it’s time that they were

treated with the dignity and respect they deserve.

From firefighters risking their lives to save people from Grenfell Tower, to the police and medical staff who deal with the aftermath of a terrorist attack, to the teachers putting in overtime to teach our children, their work is fundamentally important to all of us – and it benefits no-one for these roles to be devalued.

We’ve seen the impact of austerity policies on public services in our area – our NHS trusts have struggled with wage bills for temporary and agency staff and continue to face a significant staffing crisis.

Schools face a high turnover of teaching staff and, with funding cuts on the way to every one of our schools over the next few years, the situation is not likely to improve.

News In Brief Police turn to BBC in bid to catch culprits DEWSBURY: Police have turned to BBC TV show Crimewatch to try and catch the men who crashed into a family vehicle at 80mph.

A black VW Golf smashed into Tracey and Caitlin Scaddan on July 12 last year when Tracey was reversing the family’s white Ssangyong Korando 4x4 into her drive on Leeds Road.

Footage was captured on a lorry’s dashcam as the Golf hurtled past at 80mph, mounted the curb and then sent Tracey’s car spinning 180 degrees.

Two men then walked off after briefly looking inside the car. Speaking on the Crimewatch Roadshow programme, mumof-two Tracey said: “I can’t believe somebody would look into a car at a mother and child and just walk away, not caring whether they’re alive or not.”

Anyone with any information is asked to contact West Yorkshire Police via 101. The suspects were last seen walking up Dewsbury Road and on Soothill Lane.

Thornhill to host fayre in tot’s memory

By David Bentley FORMER STUDENTS of Whitcliffe Mount School will have one final chance to look around its hallowed halls tomorrow (Sat) before the old buildings are demolished this summer.

Staff have arranged a special open day when anyone with connections to the Cleckheaton school can tour the premises and maybe take home a special souvenir.

Whitcliffe Mount is moving to a new building, currently under construction on the same Turnsteads Road site.

From 10am until 2pm on July 1 the school will be open for the public to take a final look-around before demolition work begins in the summer holidays.

People will be able to tour the original buildings, take photos, view memorabilia, visit a viewing area for the new building, enjoy refreshments in the main dining area and visit a special shop set up for the occasion.

Whitcliffe closes to pupils on July 21, with staff working until July 25 to help move everything they need across into the new building.

Some of the items that aren’t needed or that won’t fit are due to be put on sale.

There will also be a cake sale on the day to raise funds for the Jo Cox Foundation. The late Batley and Spen MP visited the school several times and built strong links with staff and students.

The new Whitcliffe Mount is being built in three phases, the first stage of which involves the

completion of the teaching block and sports hall in readiness for the new school year this September.

Phase two will then involve the demolition of the old school buildings and the creation of a new car park.

The final work will result in the creation of a multi-use games area, expected to be completed in April 2018.

Contractor Laing O’Rourke is carrying out the work as part of project to replace seven schools in Yorkshire in a £150m deal.

The adjoining council-run Whitcliffe Mount Sports Centre was controversially closed last year, but a separate sports block

with a four-court sports hall, fitness suite and activity studio are part of the new plans.

• Whitcliffe Mount was established as Cleckheaton Secondary School in 1908 in temporary premises on Brooke Street. The school moved to its current location in the town in 1910 and was renamed Cleckheaton Secondary and Technical School. Under the Education Act 1944 the school became Whitcliffe Mount Grammar School, and when the school became comprehensive in 1973 it was renamed Whitcliffe Mount School.

ONE OF THE greatest romances of English literature was brought to life at Oakwell Hall last Wednesday in an evening of open air theatre.

The Chapterhouse Theatre Company are touring up and down the country with their adaptation of Charlotte Bronte’s Jane Eyre - a tale of undying love between young governess Jane Eyre and the enigmatic Mr Rochester and they performed in front of 300 people in Oakwell’s garden last week.

A cast of just six people took on the various roles, with Amy Llewellyn and Ricky Shaw starring as Jane Eyre and Mr Rochester.

Producer Richard Main said: “Jane Eyre is such a beautiful story wrapped up in the darkness that comes from a life found among the bleak and magnificent Yorkshire hillsides.”

The Chapterhouse Theatre company will be returning to Oakwell for a performance of Charles Dickens’ Great Expectations on Thursday, August 10.

Jo police heroes win another bravery award THE two police officers who arrested Jo Cox’s killer have again been recognised for their bravery.

After receiving the Queen’s Gallantry Medal in the recent Birthday Honours list, PCs Craig Nicholls and Jonathan Wright have now been nominated for a national Police Bravery Award.

The pair detained and arrested Thomas Mair after he stabbed and shot the MP last year.

Both were unarmed and not due out on patrol that day but after hearing of the attack they made their way towards where Mair had last been seen.

He was still armed with a knife and a loaded gun when they approached him. He reached for something from his waistband and, fearing it was a weapon, the two officers rugby-tackled him to the ground and waited for back-up.

Both officers have already received West Yorkshire Police Brave Officer Awards and a Chief Constable's commendation.

Nick Smart, chairman of the West Yorkshire Police Federation, said: “This was an extraordinary act of bravery as both officers, no doubt under extreme pressure and fear, acted and prevented the suspect from committing any further acts of extreme violence.

“The officers' primary concern was not for their own safety but the fact that there were numerous members of the public on the street going about their normal daily business who were potentially in life-threatening danger.

“The officers acted with the upmost bravery and professionalism. Their swift, courageous and selfless actions ensured the suspect was apprehended quickly and key evidence was recovered. Their actions stopped any prolonged community distress and fear.”

THE Black Horse Inn at White Lee is to re-open after a couple from Batley took it on and gave the building a makeover.

Helen and David Micklethwaite officially took over the pub on White Lee Road last Tuesday and have worked tirelessly to ensure it is fit for opening tomorrow (Saturday).

Helen, 47, said: “It has always been a dream of ours to take this pub on, not any others. We have had the opportunity to take over other pubs in Batley, but we wanted this one. We came in here as customers and without this pub, there is nowhere for people to go. We wanted to bring the community spirit back and the good times we've always had here.”

Helen, who works at Dewsbury Hospital in acute admissions, said the Black Horse has had a complete renovation. The leaking roof has been fixed, there is brand-new upholstery, carpet and woodwork and the bar has been refurbished.

She said: “Family and friends have been helping through the day and night to get it done. A building has been here since 1580, so the history goes back years and years and we can't afford to lose it. We need to keep public houses going. Fingers crossed we can get all the old customers back and also be able to welcome new customers too.”

Both Helen and David, 49, a motor mechanic, will run the pub alongside their day jobs.

They will be opening the doors from 12noon tomorrow, and there will be a karaoke disco with DJ Alan Pearce from 8pm.

News In Brief Stalker jailed HECKMONDWIKE: A stalker has been jailed for two years for bombarding a shop worker with hundreds of unwanted Facebook messages.

Over a period of several weeks late last year, Wesley Bolton, 40, of Wood Avenue, pestered Kelly Brennan with the messages, causing her distress.

Miss Brennan, 38, works at The Egg Box in Heckmondwike and said she would receive up to 50 messages a day from Bolton.

Judge David Hatton QC told Bolton at Bradford Crown Court: “Your messages to her were largely intimidatory and some of them sinister. They instilled her with fear, which I am satisfied they intended to do.”

Bolton was sentenced to two years in prison and a five-year restraining order, banning him from contacting Miss Brennan and restricting his movements close to her workplace.

Double burglary HECKMONDWIKE: Police are looking for two men after a double burglary on Heights Lane.

Two properties were broken into between 1.10pm and 1.20pm on Monday, although no items are believed to have been taken.

Two men were seen leaving the scene in a black Renault Clio that had been parked on the driveway of one of the addresses.

Both suspects are described as white males, around 5ft 11in tall, of slim build and approximately 20-30 years old. One wore a baseball cap, blue hoodie and dark jogging bottoms, the other a baseball cap and a darkcoloured long-sleeved top.

Anyone with information can pass it on to police via 101 quoting crime reference 13170291427.

Handgun found HANGING HEATON: A handgun was found last week in bushes near St Paul's Church and Hanging Heaton Junior and Infant School.

Police seized it for examination.

DEWSBURY: A man charged with child grooming offences thought he was meeting an under-age girl he had chatted to online.

But when Mark Shah, 43, arrived at the meeting point in Dewsbury town centre, he was confronted by vigilantes from Silent Justice, who said they had set up the fake profile of ‘the girl’, Bradford magistrates heard.

Shah, of Stonehyrst Avenue, is charged with an attempt to cause/incite a female child under 13 in sexual activity and attempting to meet a girl under 16 years old following grooming.

Thief’s blood blunder CLECKHEATON: A drug addict who stole from an antiques store on Westgate was captured after leaving blood at the scene, Kirklees magistrates heard.

Jason Schofield, 44, of Brooklyn Road, admitted the break-in on June 9, which was part of a string of thefts. He also stole from the Peppermint Pig card shop in the town on June 7 and goods from Tesco on April 12.

After admitting a £100-a-week heroin and crack cocaine habit, Schofield was sentenced to nine months of drug rehabilitation and ordered to pay £85 costs.

Warrant issued HECKMONDWIKE: An arrest warrant has been issued for a man accused of stealing money and jewellery.

Krisztian Korsos, of Green Avenue, failed to appear at Kirklees Magistrates' Court accused of conspiring with others to rob money and jewellery as well as conspiracy to commit theft. He is also accused of handling stolen goods.

The offences allegedly took place between March 1 and April 15.

DEWSBURY Minster sent their 150year-old Easter Bell to be repaired last week after it was found to have cracks in it.

The bell could not be chimed at Easter this year because of the damage, and the Minster sent it off to a specialist welder on Thursday.

Work started at 7am to lower the bell from its tower to the bell ringing floor, with the help of experts from John Taylor’s bell foundry. From there it was lowered to ground floor level where it was then wheeled outside the church and put into a van.

Derek Johnstone, tower captain, said: “It was a tricky job to safely manoeuvre the 300kg bell and fittings through the bell frame, using multiple winches and lashing points.

“When on the ground, Reverend Elizabeth Lee said prayers around the bell.”

It took a team of five volunteer ringers from Dewsbury Minster, Ossett and Queensbury to assist John Taylor’s expert bell-hanger to lower it down through the tower.

Fundraising has exceeded £5,000, which has funded the lowering of the bell and the welding work to repair the cracks, but a further £3,500 is needed to reinstall it.

Mr Johnstone hopes the bell will be back in place by September.

Treat in store for Trekkies in town’s arts festival THE HARD work is starting to pay off as Mirfield prepares for another festival next month.

Mirfield Arts Festival is a weekend of free events taking place from Friday July 14 to Sunday July 16 in 12 venues across the town. This year’s theme is ‘Mirfield Takes Flight’, with a special Star Trek event running alongside the main fes-

tival. The programme includes a screening of the First Contact film followed by two full days of sci-fi activities for Trekkies.

And even if you are not a Star Trek fan, there will be plenty to enjoy as the festival celebrates all aspects of the arts.

There will be chances to try your hand at sculpture, painting, singing, photography, woodturn-

ing and more. St Paul’s Church on Newgate will be the home of the Star Trek events, with an exhibition of original costumes.

Trekkies will be able to enjoy a family day on the Saturday, with starship and costume design talks on Sunday. You can even have a Skype conversation from the United States with the designer of the Enterprise him-

self, Andrew Probert.

Sir Patrick Stewart has also signed memorabilia especially for the festival – including a hand-made wooden model of the famous Enterprise, made by Birstall Woodturners Club, which is based in Mirfield.

Visitors are invited to incorporate the flying theme into their fancy dress for the festival.

A PACKED line-up of entertainment has been announced as Ossett’s 28th annual gala takes over the town centre.

From 10am to 4pm on Saturday July 8 there will be street entertainment and performers, charity stalls, fairground rides, bouncy castle, donkey rides and tasty food stalls.

There will be dozens of fundraising, compe craft and local produce stalls available to browse on the precinct and inside the Town Hall, with lots of entertainment throughout the day.

There is something for everyone and a full programme, so visitors are encouraged to pop down and see their favourite performer, support a worthwhile charity or indulge in some goodies for yourself.

ITV is to pilot a new panel show format involving comedy impressionists. The Imitation Game will be hosted by Alexander Armstrong and feature four impressionists.

Describing the show as ‘fastpaced’, the producers explain: The Imitation Game is a new comedy panel show with a celebrity twist. If successful it will be on air later this year.”

STEVE COOGAN has announced that he is bringing Alan Partridge back to the BBC. Signalling it was more than just a special, he added: “There will be a lot of Alan on TV next year.” Mr Coogan, though, of late has been very busy campaigning for the Labour Party.

NEW Environment Secretary Michael Gove is a fan of Radio 4’s The Archers. He told me at a London studio: “It’s the one show that I never miss, I always imagine that one day we could live there and yes I know it’s not real, but one likes to escape from time to time...”

ANYONE remember the creepy late-night ITV show Tales of The Unexpected?

TV insiders tell me that bosses are very keen to bring it back as “people enjoyed the dark stories that the show covered, plus it’s great for many guest stars and very easy to sell worldwide.”

CHANNEL Four’s youth drama Ackley Bridge shed more than half a million viewers, despite a massive marketing push. Now insiders at the channel tell me that they are hopeful the new figures will hold and it may return for a second series.

The show was filmed in Halifax earlier this year.

CORONATION STREET is being reinvented in a series of prequel novels.

HarperCollins has signed a three-book deal with ITV Studios for the prequels, which will be set before the show began in 1960 and will “tell the story of the early

TENOR Alfie Boe was honoured in his home town with a blue plaque at the Marine Hall in Fleetwood as part of BBC Music Day, in front of family, friends and fans. Alfie tells me: “It’s such a thrill, I mean I started here at the hall collecting tickets for the Houghton Weavers, so to get my own plaque, well does it get any better than that?”

OPENING night last Friday at the Artspace, Stephen Sondheim’s award-winning musical ‘Assassins’ presented the nine men and women who made successful or unsuccessful attempts on the lives of US presidents since Abraham Lincoln.

Sondheim’s music and the characters are complex, and the immensely talented Dewsbury Arts Group cast mastered both under the direction of the brilliant David Fletcher.

Assassins is an ensemble piece and the cast, who perform in principal roles across the area, skilfully managed the task of taking centre stage when it was their turn in the proprietor’s fairground assassination game, whilst strongly supporting each other in ensemble.

The characterisation from all cast members was superb, each applying their theatrical instincts to portraying the assassins and communicating their motives through expert delivery of dialogue.

There was an interesting contrast between the assassins – driven by anger at the per-

ceived social or economic failure of Lincoln, McKinley and Hoover, through to the attention-seeking attempt on Regan’s life – and the embodiment of the American Dream in the Balladeer.

The puppet-master roles of the fairground proprietor and, intriguingly, John Wilkes Booth were similarly strong in building this fascinating story.

The story builds to that fateful day on the Grassy Knoll in Dallas in 1963 and presents an interesting idea for what drove Lee Harvey Oswald to assassinate John F Kennedy: the legacy of this gallery of assassins and the destruction of the rosy American Dream.

Despite a shocking final scene, there is humour in the piece and some great tunes, which many in the audience were singing on their way out.

Some were heard planning when they would see the show again; such was this opening night success.

Highly recommended.

The show runs until this Saturday, July 1, at the Artspace, Lower Peel Street, Dewsbury.

30th anniversary of festival LECKHEATON Folk Festival returns to celebrate its 30th year with a host of musical delights to entertain the masses this weekend.

As always, the streets are expected to be filled with ‘folkies’ from up and down the country for music from both local and nationallyrenowned folk acts, complemented with generous helpings of fun and entertainment for all the family.

And this year boasts a wonderful line-up over from today (Fri) until Sunday.

Headlining the festival on the Friday at Cleckheaton Town Hall will be John Tams and Barry Coope and on Saturday, Oysterband will take to the stage.

Other must-see acts over the weekend include The Willows (Sunday), Risky Business (Saturday), and

Winter Wilson (Friday).

There will also be a chance to take part in the ever-popular Wickham Dance Trophy, where sides come from all over the country and gather to dance at various spots around the town centre.

Groups have to impress with the intricacy of their steps, rhythm, musicianship, costumes and crowd-pleasing ability and whoever is judged the best, keep the trophy for a year.

Thieving Magpies will be looking to snatch it for a fourth year after winning last year's top prize.

The traditional folk festival parade will take place on the Saturday, starting from Cleckheaton Fire Station at 11am and there will also be a host of street entertainment throughout the day.

Both days will boast a street market with 22 stalls on Albion Street, as well as

the monthly food market on the Saturday morning in the Bradford Road car park.

There will also be the usual sessions, workshops and sing-a-rounds over the weekend, with sessions taking place at The Commercial, as well as sing-a-rounds at The Wickham on Friday evening, Saturday and Sunday afternoon.

The campsite on Primrose Lane, just behind Spenborough Pool, opens at noon on Friday and a free mini-bus service will be provided over the weekend from the campsite to the town hall.

As well as lots of free events taking place across the town, weekend tickets for all the concerts are available from www.

Special living history event MARCH your way back in time with a living history weekend at Oakwell Hall next weekend.

The Hall in Birstall will be transported back to the 1700s, when British Army troops were sent to stop an army of Scots who were marching south trying to put the Old Pretender, James Stuart, on the throne.

The scene will be set by a military unit lodged at Oakwell to recruit and train new soldiers – and to muster loyalty for the new Hanovarian King, George I. Visitors will be able to watch members of the Queen’s Regiment in their camp, performing drills and firing displays.

The one-off event takes place between 12noon and 5pm on Saturday July 8 and Sunday July 9 from 11am to 4pm.

It’s priced at £5 per adult and £2 per child, including entry to the Hall itself.

The event is supported by the Friends of Oakwell and there is a 50 per cent discount on entry for members of the Friends group.

Five years of success A TRADITIONAL fish and chip shop in Mirfield is celebrating five years of business success this week.

Old Bank Fisheries, on Old Bank Road, was re-opened by David Griffiths on June 28, 2012, and is now a thriving concern.

Mr Griffiths said: “I’d never owned a fish shop before but it was something I always wanted to do. We turned it around within a couple of years and now the business does really well.”

The shop employs one full-time member of staff and three part-timers and has strong relationships with the nearby Old Bank Club and other surrounding businesses.

Traditional fish and chips are £3.50 for a standard portion and £4.60 for a large portion. “We compromise on price but never on quality,” added Mr Griffiths.

New baby store launch A BABY and toddler retailer is launching a 'concept store' in Dewsbury at the end of July.

Kiddies Kingdom’s new 9,000 square foot at Saville Mills on Mill Street East will be Yorkshire’s largest baby and nursery showroom, with over 150 brands available.

The new store has been created by managing director Mohammed Patel.

He’s promising a wide range of choice, offering both classic and innovative designs to accommodate the tastes of all expectant parents.

Know your holiday rights, says Batley MP BATLEY & Spen MP Tracy Brabin has questioned Government ministers this week about the misunderstanding surrounding rights to paid holiday.

Research by national charity Citizens Advice found that half of people on zero-hour contracts and two out of five people on temporary contracts wrongly believe they are not entitled to paid holidays.

When the research was released, the Kirklees Citizens Advice Bureau said they were aware of the problem and that they were concerned that some employers might be deliberately misleading staff.

Ms Brabin (Lab) says she is concerned that hard-working local people are missing out because they don’t know their rights in the workplace.

“The government need to step up and let companies know there will be clear repercussions if they don’t play by the rules and deny staff their rights.

“I’m encouraging everyone to read up on their rights at work, if you’re on a temporary contract or zero-hours contract, you have many of the same rights as those in regular employment so don’t miss out.”

RE YOU aware of changes to data protection that have come into force in the EU? The change in legislation called the General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR) is already having a significant impact on UK businesses, and it is not even being enforced until May 2018 – are you ready for GDPR? What is GDPR? GDPR replaces the Data Protection Act 1998 and affects all businesses that hold data about individuals – so basically all businesses.

Next year, as individuals, we will have the right to contact any UK entity and request the data that it holds about us and what it has been used for, and the business is legally obliged to respond (at their cost) within 30 days.

Despite the UK getting ready to ‘Brexit’, the legislation will be upheld and it affects not only businesses based in Europe, but any business that trades in Europe and handles the data of European citizens.

This change in legislation is so

huge, but it seems that many businesses are not prepared for it.

No longer is a simple ‘opt in’ enough, businesses are expected to have approval for all future communications, but this is not the only difference with GDPR. What are the differences from the Data Protection Act? The change in legislation has implications for all businesses handling data, it applies to the data processors (businesses like Ascensor that process data on behalf of our clients, for their clients) as well as the data controllers (the businesses that have acquired the data).

All businesses with or without websites will be affected, but clearly any business that has an online profile will be affected in some way, due to the mailing lists that are held.

Other significant changes include the definition of data. Data now includes ‘anything that enables an individual to be identified’ and includes pseudonyms and account names, cultural and health-related information and even IP addresses.

As individuals can now request ‘all’ information from businesses, businesses need to be ready for this change in legislation or the costs of compliance will be significant.

The cost of non-compliance will however be a lot more, with fines reaching into the hundreds of thousands for businesses found to be mis-using individual data.

As businesses start to get ready for GDPR it is vital that any customer data that is held on web servers and in the cloud is secure and records are available to help them identify the data upon request.

This is one of those laws that will creep up on us – so make sure you have things in place before it does!

Hanging Heaton cut it close HANGING HEATON shook off the disappointment of their first Premier Division defeat of the season in the All Rounder Bradford Premier League, at home to Pudsey St Lawrence, to bounce back the following day and secure a place in the last 16 of the ECB’s Royal London National Club Cricket Championship with a nail-biting two-run win over Elsecar.

The Saturday night withdrawal of bowler Tom Chippendale, with a groin strain, left cricket chairman John Carruthers in 11th-hour discussions with skipper Gary Fellows regarding the formation of the side for Sunday’s regional final at Bennett Lane.

It was agreed that Carruthers, now second-team captain, should fill the gap left by Chippendale - and what a priceless decision that was.

Fellows himself led the way for his side in the game, when he carried his bat for a score of 152 not out in his side’s 45 overs. But, chas-

ing a total of 275 for four, Elsecar came remarkably close to victory.

When Carruthers came on to bowl the last over, having taken 1-34 in his previous five, Elsecar needed nine to level the scores and the situation called for steady nerves all round.

A wicket with his first ball saw Carruthers dismiss Elsecar keeper Andrew Joburns without scoring, caught by Dan Busfield, but the batsmen crossed leaving skipper Jason Meadows, unbeaten on 81, to face the next delivery.

A quick single was followed by two overthrows but new man Joe Denby now had strike. He took a single off his first ball to leave Meadows to face Carruthers’ with three remaining.

The next two balls also resulted in singles but Meadows, needing three off the final ball, could only manage another single.

Season over for Shaw Cross ‘A’ SHAW CROSS SHARKS ‘A’ or the Rats as they are more popularly known, have been forced to end their season early due to a lack of players.

Rats head coach James Collins confirmed last Thursday that the team would no longer be able to compete in the Yorkshire Men’s League for the remainder of the season.

“Unfortunately the time has come where we have to call it a day with the Rats, we don’t have a big enough squad to field two teams week-in, week-out,” said Collins.

“Cheers to everyone who has played for us in the last four years, we’ve had some great days and we’ve won a fair few trophies.

“Fingers crossed this won’t be the end of the Rats but for this season we have no choice.”

The club has reiterated that this is only a temporary measure and that the possibility of playing friendlies and putting a team in the winter league are things that are being considered.

Three in a row for in-form Bulldogs Kingstone Press Championship

BATLEY Bulldogs ground out an important victory as they battled past Rochdale Hornets to pick up a 24-14 win on the road, making it three in a row for the first time under Matt Diskin.

With two minutes left on the clock, Alistair Leak burrowed over from dummy half to grab a crucial try which killed the hosts’ chances of picking up the points.

It was an arm-wrestle of an affair with both forward packs battling throughout to get on top, and although it wasn’t a classic contest it was evenly fought with the result hanging in the balance until the latter stages.

The goal-kicking of Pat Walker was crucial too, as both sides scored three tries apiece. His boot was the difference in the end.

It started perfectly for the Hornets when Lewis Galbraith found a hole on the left edge inside the first minute, as the kick-off was knocked-on by Jason Crookes

the hosts took full advantage of the error.

Twelve minutes in Batley responded, as Adam Gledhill charged onto a flat pass and proved too strong from close range, picking up a try which Walker converted from in front.

A forced offload from Jono Smith went to ground eight minutes later and Rochdale were punished as Dane Manning sent over the supporting Shaun Ainscough for another six pointer.

Some great goal-line defence followed by three penalties and a team warning for the visitors saw Jake Eccleston cross on 28 minutes, as Lewis Foster floated a pass over the top to the wide man and he stepped his way back over.

Both Hornets tries were unconverted, and when Walker opted to take a shot at goal eight minutes before the break Batley took a six-point lead into the interval.

The half ended with a square-off between Gary Middlehurst and Joel Farrell which caused the game to get slightly heated, as the collisions in the middle of the field intensified.

Middlehurst scored the first

points of the second 40 when he forced his way over from Ryan Maneely’s flat pass close to the line, and this time Danny Yates added the extras.

The Hornets tried to get on top of the game by kicking for touch and making their opponents come out from their own goal-line.

But they fell behind with 11 minutes of the contest left as Walker kicked a penalty for offside.

A clever kick-off from Foster saw Batley knock-on and present a huge chance to the home side, but Middlehurst dropped the ball early in the set.

Rochdale then knocked on under pressure deep in their own half before Leak scored a crucial try from dummy half, and when Walker knocked over the conversion from out wide it made it an eight-point game.

Foster tried another drilled kick-off but this time it went out on the full, gifting Batley a penalty.

With the final play of the game, Walker kicked the penalty from half-way to seal a hard fought win for the Bulldogs.

DEWSBURY MOOR MAROONS kept up the pace in the race for promotion with a hard-fought win over bottom side Elland.

Moor took an early lead through half-back Aiden Ineson and Jacob Flathers converted.

Complacency began to set in amongst the home side in the knowledge that Elland sat firmly rooted to the bottom of the table and only travelled with a squad of 14.

But it was no surprise when the next score came courtesy of the visitors, with a missed conversion preserving Dewsbury’s lead.

Moor then saw new signing Sam Thornton notch a superb solo try when a kick return saw him use his lightning pace and go 60 metres to score in the corner. Flathers failed to convert for the extra two points.

However two tries from Elland before the break saw Moor trail by four points at half-time.

Moor needed some inspiration and it soon came from Bartley O’Brien.

O’Brien played a short pass to James Eatherley, who burst the line to score on 48 minutes. The kicking duties were handed back to Ineson

Vernon collected a high kick and managed to get an offload away as he was being forced to the touchline by three Elland defenders.

Scott Sheard picked the ball up and planted it down over the line.

Elland refused to give in and were rewarded with an unconverted try with 10 minutes to go.

With two minutes left to play Jordan Foster supported a break by

Eatherley and went over underneath the posts to seal the win.

Moor coach Allan Samme was disappointed with the performance from his players but was relieved his side got the result.

“That was far too close for comfort, I can’t put my finger on what was wrong today,” said Samme.

“The big positive is we can have an off day and still collect the two points.

“It’s only the halfway stage of the season and its going to be a long one so days like today are expected. It is how we react now.”

JUNIOR RUGBY LEAGUE DEWSBURY CELTIC UNDER-14s continued their winning streak with a close victory away at Guiseley.

Celtic took a 12-6 lead going into half-time with tries from winger Ben Hardwick and forward Gabriel Croft, with Harry Hargreaves adding the extras.

Guiseley continued with attacking pressure throughout the second half, forcing Celtic to work hard in defence and scored to bring the scores level at 12-12.

Captain Janeil Simpson took control of the game and in the last five minutes, completed an attack

with a cross-field kick for Hardwick to collect and seal a 1612 victory.

After a close-fought game the Army came out on top with an 1812 victory and booked their place in the final, where they will face York City Knights.

Batley and Spen MP Tracy Brabin was also in attendance on Saturday to take part in the celebrations for Armed Forces Day. “Armed Forces Day is an important day in our national calendar when we pause to thank those serving our country, keeping us safe and also give respect to former servicemen and women,” said the Batley and Spen MP. “Batley hosted a wonderful rugby league match and although we all cheer the local team, no one would begrudge our servicewomen their deserved victory on the day.”

ROSS ROEBUCK was the hero for Shaw Cross Sharks as he scored a try in the dying embers of the game to help the Sharks narrowly defeat Normanton Knights on Saturday afternoon.

On a day where controversy reigned, it was the Sharks who battled their way to the two points in a true arm-wrestle of a contest.

The victory was the Sharks’ fifth away win from six this season and leaves them two points away from the play-off places.

The visitors got off to a perfect start as Brandan French opened the scoring inside the first three minutes.

Returning captain Danny Flowers provided a short ball for French, who gathered and fended the tackler away to get over the line.

Moments later Matthew Tebb doubled the lead for Shaw Cross in only his second game since returning to the club.

Tebb broke the line 40 metres out and twice sold a dummy to the tacklers and found the space needed to rush over in the corner.

Normanton responded to going behind with two scores of their own.

Ryan Kelsey scored the hosts’ first try of the afternoon as the ball was thrown wide and the centre had the space needed to score in the corner.

A kick across the field towards winger Aaron Butterfield was superbly gathered as Butterfield leaped to catch and score.

Sharks full-back Sam Ottewell

then scored with a wonderful solo effort to give his side some breathing space.

Ottewell jinked his way through the Normanton line before stepping past the Knights full-back to race away and score beside the posts.

The Sharks’ 10-point lead was soon cut to six when Lee Hammond scored in the corner for Normanton.

Shaw Cross extended their lead minutes into the second half thanks to a second try from Ottewell.

Flowers fed the ball to French who produced a sharp pass to Roebuck. The Sharks winger burst down the line before passing back inside to Ottewell who slid over the line.

The Knights’ second-rower Matthew Handforth was then sent off for head-butting and throwing a punch.

Normanton took the lead in controversial circumstances and looked like they had snatched the two points from Shaw Cross.

Connor Wilson got over for the hosts after the Sharks stopped in their tracks waiting for a knock-on to be given, but play resumed and Wilson capitalised to score.

The hosts then took the lead as the ball was thrown wide to Butterfield, who went round the back to touch down close to the posts.

Almost all of the Shaw Cross players stood still waiting for a forward pass to be given, but the try was awarded leaving the Sharks with 10 minutes to find a winner. The moment came for Shaw Cross as the ball was moved swiftly along the right to Roebuck, who finished brilliantly in the corner to win the game.

at the Tetley’s Stadium DEWSBURY RAMS scored four tries in 12 second-half minutes to overcome top-four chasing Toulouse and boost their fight against relegation.

The victory moves Dewsbury into tenth place and out of the relegation zone for the first time this season, the Rams now sit level on points with Swinton in ninth and one point behind Rochdale in eighth.

The Rams held an early lead, but then trailed for a large period, before finding an extra gear in the final 20 minutes to blow their French visitors out of the water.

The win is Dewsbury’s fourth from their last six games, having only lost to London and Hull KR in recent weeks.

The home side took the lead in the seventh minute when centre Lucas Walshaw powered over from close range on the right wing following simple hands from left to right. Paul Sykes added the conversion.

Neil Kelly’s side continued to manage the tempo of the game in the minutes that followed and limited the Toulouse attack to speculative efforts on the last tackle.

Miraculously, the visitors found themselves on level terms, when a loose pass was recycled off the ground and worked right for Louis Jouffret to break.

He found the supporting Paul Marcon, who held off a defensive challenge from Dale Morton to go in under the posts. Mark Kheirallah’s

The Rams had a golden opportunity to strike back five minutes before half-time, when they forced a repeat set, but the ball was passed forward

on the third tackle and Toulouse escaped.

The home side finished the half on top and narrowed the deficit after their visitors had been penalised twice in a minute. Sykes obliged from in front of the posts to make it 8-12.

The hosts started the second half brightly, forcing a drop-out from the restart and applying pressure.

Toulouse were wasteful in possession, and handed the Rams several opportunities to regain the lead.

Dewsbury were unable to strike a killer blow, but they forced back-to-

back drop-outs to maintain the pressure.

Toulouse survived their spell defending and almost added a third try, but Kheirallah was forced into touch just shy of the try line.

Minutes later they made it stick as Rhys Curran strolled through a gap.

Kheirallah was wide with the conversion.

The Rams won back their short kick-off, and Dom Speakman’s kick on the last was caught by Walshaw, who dotted down for his second try.

Sykes’s goal made it 14-16.

His half-back partner Gareth Moore helped create the next try as Macauley Hallett powered over to put Dewsbury in front moments later. Sykes was again on target, and it got even better for the home side.

Toulouse gifted Dewsbury possession when Morton was alert to a loose ball, and on the following set Aaron Brown twisted out of a tackle to cross from close range. Sykes’s fifth goal put Dewsbury 10 points in front.

It was game over shortly after when Jode Sheriffe burrowed over under the posts. Sykes maintained his perfect record to make it 32-16 with less than ten on the clock. He added a penalty a couple of minutes later.

There was still time for Marcon to complete his hat-trick though, and Kheirallah produced a superb conversion at speed, but time ran out on the visitors.

The defeat is a blow to the French side’s hopes of sealing a top four spot, while the win for Dewsbury ensures their fight to beat the drop grows ever stronger, following the midweek win over Oldham.

Everett becomes latest Trojans bearing down on top spot name to join Dewsbury BRADFORD DUDLEY HILL 16 NCL Division Two

DEWSBURY RAMS have continued to strengthen their squad in their bid for survival with the signing of Toby Everett.

Neil Kelly has made a host of signings since his return to the club, with Everett being brought in until the end of the season.

The 21-year-old forward was with London Broncos and spent the beginning of the season on loan at Canadian outfit Toronto Wolfpack.

However an injury in pre-season meant that Everett found it difficult to get regular game time at Toronto.

Everett is out of contract with London at the end the year and was keen to join the Rams in order to get more time on the field.

“I was attracted to Dewsbury by the passion and drive all the boys in the team have, and from playing against Dewsbury on a number of occasions, I’ve seen how all the fans really get behind the team,”

said Everett.

“Hopefully I can aim to stay at the club for a longer period of time in the future.

“My immediate goals and ambitions are not only to improve myself as a player, but also to do what I can on the field to help make Dewsbury Rams enjoy more success in the weeks and months ahead.”

Everett made his debut in Sunday’s win over Toulouse Olympique and the young forward is already relishing the chance to make his second appearance.

He said: “It’s never easy coming to a new team late in the season but the boys have made me feel at home and helped me out on the field on Sunday.

“I’d like to say a massive thank you to the fans also for making me and my family feel so welcome on Sunday.

“I already can’t wait to pull on the Dewsbury shirt again.”

THORNHILL TROJANS gave their promotion hopes a huge boost with a dominant victory over Bradford Dudley Hill.

The win further secured Thornhill’s place among the top six and left them bearing down on top spot – as they are now level on points with second-placed East Leeds and only a point behind Oulton in first place.

Dudley ran out comfortable victors the last time the sides met, however since that game it is the Trojans who have hit top form.

Thornhill struck early in the game with a try after only three minutes.

The ball was moved along the attacking line to Liam Morley who in turn sent Tom Gledhill crashing over by the side of the posts.

The Trojans were caught napping after a stoppage in play. Dudley Hill drew level as Sebastian Russo nipped

over from close range.

The hosts were not level for long as James Craven threw a pass wide to George Woodcock, who sprinted down the touchline and dived over in the corner.

Danny Ratcliffe soon furthered Thornhill’s advantage with his first touch.

He received the ball before stepping round the tackler and racing 30 metres to score.

Bradford responded quickly as James Morton ploughed over from close range to reduce the deficit.

In the run-up to half-time Dudley Hill dropped the ball, which was picked up by Morley, who set off on a run towards the posts.

Joss Ratcliffe was up in support of the break and collected a pass from Morley to stride over for a try.

Woodcock converted to put 10 points between the sides going into half time.

Joss Ratcliffe scored his second try of the afternoon shortly after the restart.

The ball was moved to Will Gledhill and the stand-off then sent the ball

wide to Ratcliffe, who planted the ball down one-handed in the corner.

With play once again close to the hosts’ tryline, Anthony Broadhead found Morley who in turn put Luke Haigh over for another Trojans try.

Haigh then turned creator when his pass put substitute Sam Ratcliffe away on a run. With a sudden turn of pace he raced clear to further Thornhill’s lead.

Thornhill continued to pile the misery on Dudley Hill when straight from the restart Broadhead collected the ball and gave it to Danny Ratcliffe who burst through to go over in the corner.

A late consolation try from Harry Hall was quickly cancelled out by Thornhill.

A failed interception was picked up

by Thornhill and the attack was completed when Will Gledhill touched down for an unconverted try.

Tomorrow Thornhill host Leigh East (2.30pm) where a win could see them go top of the table if other results go their way – table-toppers Oulton host Drighlington and East Leeds are away to Saddleworth.

Bulldogs ready to upset Rovers

BATLEY BULLDOGS boss Matt Diskin says his side will be full of confidence ahead of a tough trip to Featherstone Rovers on Sunday (3pm).

Batley go into the match having won three successive games – the first time they have achieved such a feat under Diskin.

Diskin says that Featherstone’s budget allows them to bring in more high calibre players but is not deterred by the challenge that awaits.

“We are heading to one of the best sides in the league but we are going into the game on the back of some great form and we are looking forward to it,” said Diskin.

“When you look at the budget that Featherstone have got, it is something that allows them to bring in quality players right across the park.

“They have some outstanding individuals, we need to make sure that we put ourselves in a position that will make sure we compete and do what we can to get a result.”

The Bulldogs ground out victory against Rochdale last weekend and Diskin believes his team have learned their lessons in how to combat teams who aim to play a more negative style of rugby.

The game remained even for large parts, only for Batley to edge clear in the closing

moments, and Diskin was pleased with the defensive work from his team.

He said: “I was disappointed with how the game unfolded, I think that Rochdale played a really negative style of rugby in an attempt to slow the game down, to

niggle at our players and try to hustle us out of the game.

“They competed in large parts by slowing it down which is a shame because I have watched Rochdale on video and know they can play better rugby than that.

“I was pleased with how my

players responded, we defended really well and squeezed the result out.

“Defensively at key parts in the game we controlled the field position by not letting them past their 20-metre line and it was that kind of effort and commitment that won us the game.”

Batley have struggled for consistency this season, which is highlighted by their stop-start results since February.

Diskin believes his side are now starting to find their feet but says that there is still much more improvement to come from his players.

“I don’t think we are at where I want us to be just yet but we are certainly improving,” added Diskin.

“It has taken a long time for myself and the players to get used to each other.

“The players have made some steps towards the systems we are trying to put into practice but I still think there is miles of improvement in us which is a real positive thing.”

Diskin will have a full squad to choose from for Sunday’s game with the exception of Danny Cowling, who is under assessment for concussion.

“It is unrealistic to expect any coach to name a 19 when you don’t know if players are fit until after training.”

Kelly believes that the fitness levels from his team have improved since his arrival and credited the work of conditioner Adam Mitchell.

THE UNDER-12S of Thornhill Trojans and Shaw Cross Sharks will kick off this year’s Heavy Woollen Cup Finals at Mount Pleasant next Thursday evening.

Four junior finals are due to be held over the the next two weeks, with the Under-13 James Flannigan Cup taking place immediately after the Under-12s contest the Gary Talbot Cup. Batley Boys and Shaw Cross will face off for the James Flannigan Cup at 7pm, with Thornhill and Shaw Cross U-12s kicking off at 6pm.

The following week on July 13 Batley Boys and Shaw Cross will be in action for the Under-14s Cup, with the game kicking off at 6pm.

The final game in the junior section will take place at 7pm on the same night, with Birstall Victoria U-15s battling against Dewsbury Moor for the Malcolm Waring Cup. The Under-16s, Under-18s and Open Age finals will take place in August, in the week leading up to the Challenge Cup final on Saturday August 16.
