Two shootings in Dewsbury put police on alert ARMED police patrols have been increased in Dewsbury following a spate of targeted attacks this week.

Shots were fired and roads were closed on Monday and Tuesday as police investigated two separate incidents, which officials say are not linked.

On Wednesday, officers were also called to Spen Valley Road in Ravensthorpe to a suspected arson attack on a parked vehicle.

Four males aged 17, 17, 19 and 29, were arrested in connection with the first incident on Monday evening, when a car crashed into a barrier at Dewsbury Police Station and gunshots were reported.

It is believed that a white Vauxhall Astra hit the barrier as the driver was fleeing gunmen, who then fired shots at the car after it crashed.

Armed police and an air ambulance attended and a man in his 20s was airlifted to Leeds General Infirmiry.

Eyewitnesses described the incident as a drive-by shooting, with two shots believed to have been fired.

It is believed he was shot in the shoulder, and police have confirmed his condition is non-life threatening.

No arrests have been made in connection with the Dewsbury Moor shooting or the Ravensthorpe arson attack.

Inspector Chris Hughes, of Dewsbury and Mirfield Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: “Over the past few days there have been a number of incidents in the Dewsbury area and our commu-

nities are understandably concerned.

“I would like to reassure them that we are conducting extensive enquiries into these incidents and want to send a clear message that gun crime will not be tolerated by West Yorkshire Police.

“We believe that all the incidents were targeted attacks, but also unconnected with each other.

Absentee councillor’s seat declared vacant

By-election to decide replacement for controversial Batley East representative

By Zoe Shackleton A BY-ELECTION will be held in Batley East to appoint a new councillor.

Amanda Stubley, pictured, has not attended council meetings for six months, meaning her seat in the Batley East ward has now been made vacant and the search for her replacement will begin this month.

The 46-year-old mother-of-two took office in 2011 and was last elected in May 2015.

She was suspended by the regional Labour Party in

November 2016 following a clash with protesters in Batley Market Place, after which she decided to cut all her ties with the party.

Ms Stubley was also accused of posting inappropriate and provocative messages on social media.

Following her suspension, the former tenants’ campaigner set up a new ‘Batley Independents’ political group and sat as an independent Kirklees councillor.

Ms Stubley’s picture and contact details have now been removed from the council website.

A Kirklees spokesman said: “As a result of Batley East ward councillor Amanda Stubley not attending council meetings for six months, the position she held has now become vacant.

“The council will make a formal declaration of the vacancy at the next council meeting on September 13.

“This will start the by-election process, which will follow the normal timetable with the notice of election being published on September 21, 2017.”

Mirfield firm’s cladding plan denied A MIRFIELD business was refused planning permission to add cladding to the front its premises by Kirklees Council planning committee.

But almost 900 people have signed a petition, launched by the Ushiwear clothing brand, in support of a storefront revamp on Calder Road.

The council’s Heavy Woollen planning subcommittee refused permission for the cladding to be installed because most members thought it looked out of place amongst a row of 19th century Yorkshire stone buildings.

Neil Kapusi, co-founder of Ushiwear, said: “So far there haven’t been any objections raised by the community and we see the refusal by Kirklees Council as an unnecessary

KIRKLEES: The council are turning to a small machine to improve road surfaces around the district.

The MultiHog - a machine that is able to remove damaged road surface from around potholes - will face a further four months of testing after a previous trial showed it as the best option to repair roads.

Kirklees Council trialled a number of different methods for improving the repairs of potholes in the roads.

Up to 40,000 potholes are reported each year.

The machine will be out and about working area by area across Kirklees and the council will now work in geographical areas repairing all potholes they find on the streets locally before moving on to the next.

Birstall setting for new TV series

Dewsbury A&E downgrade now close to completion THE THREE-YEAR reorganisation of hospital services that has led to the downgrade of Dewsbury and District Hospital’s A&E department will be completed on Monday (Sept 4).

The Acute Hospital Reconfiguration (AHR) programme will reach its final phase this weekend, and Monday will see the centralisation of services at Pinderfields Hospital in Wakefield.

This means that Dewsbury Hospital’s emergency department will become an urgent care centre, with Pinderfields being used as the The Mid Yorkshire NHS Hospitals Trust’s centralised A&E centre.

‘Pan in the Park’ thrills big crowds

CHICKENLEY: Home Secretary Amber Rudd visited the community centre in Chickenley on Wednesday to look at a new project that aims to bring together youngsters from different backgrounds.

As part of the government’s Prevent anti-radicalisation scheme, Mrs Rudd saw Thornhill Lees children with an Asian backgound visit children in Chickenley - a predominantly white area - at the community centre.

The scheme aims to stop home-grown terrorists by promoting community cohesion.

Paul Moore, community development officer for the community centre, said: “Integration isn’t something you can force on anyone, it has to occur naturally. What we’re saying is you can show young people that they have more in common than they have different.”

PERFORMANCES of Peter Pan – with a twist -– sold out in Batley over the Bank Holiday weekend.

The new take on JM Barrie’s original story was performed to six sell-out crowds at Bagshaw Museum and Wilton Park last Sunday and Monday.

In an ambitious outdoor production, the cast from Leedsbased theatre company Wrongsemble weaved their way from the museum down through the woods to the park performing the show.

Audiences wore headphones throughout so they could hear the actors as they followed them on their journey through the park.

Vicky Holliday, producer at Creative Scene, which brings culture, art and performance to North Kirklees and helped put on the show, said: “All six shows sold out and we had people turning up asking for tickets each day.

“It is good to know that professional, outdoor performance arts is in demand and will allow us to plan for future outdoor family events.

“The audience loved it. This brand-new imagining of Peter Pan was modern and energetic and outdoors.

“The audience was a part of the action from start to finish, without them it couldn’t happen.”

Glasses thief goes back to crime scene

MIRFIELD: A man stole a pair of designer glasses from a store and then returned to the same shop a few days later.

Shaun Hudson, of Oliver Gardens, took the £160 Prada glasses from the Eye Pharmacy store on Huddersfield Road on February 1.

The 42-year-old was arrested for the offence when he showed up there a few days later. Kirklees magistrates heard that he did not remember the earlier incident.

Hudson was ordered to pay £160 compensation to the store, as well as £85 in court costs.

He was also sentenced to 15 days of rehabilitation activities.

MP calls for A&E rethink Hunt urged to reconsider Dewsbury downgrade

By Staff Reporters BATLEY & SPEN MP Tracy Brabin has again urged Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt to visit the area to see for himself the importance of Dewsbury and District Hospital’s A&E department.

Dewsbury’s A&E will be officially downgraded on Monday, September 4, as the Mid Yorkshire NHS Trust’s reconfiguration programme comes to an end.

This means that Dewsbury’s emergency department will become an urgent care centre, with Pinderfields being a centralised A&E centre.

This week Ms Brabin reiterated her call for Mr Hunt to come to Batley & Spen in another official letter to him: It reads: “I would be grateful if you would accompany me on a visit to Dewsbury and District Hospital, so that you can see for yourself the importance of a fully functioning A&E department at the site.

“It is not too late for you, as Secretary of

State, to step in and provide my community with the support and resources that we need to prevent the downgrade of our vital health services.”

Ms Brabin, who is Shadow Minister for Early Years, said: “I am deeply concerned by the announcement that the downgrade of the A&E department at Dewsbury and District Hospital is set to be completed over the coming weeks.

“It’s time for the member of government responsible for the NHS, Jeremy Hunt, to come to Batley & Spen to truly take the time to understand the importance, and the strength of feeling surrounding a fully-functioning A&E at Dewsbury and District Hospital.

“The combination of the downgrade at Dewsbury and District Hospital, and the threat of downgrade faced by Huddersfield A&E, means that the whole of Kirklees could be left without a fully functioning A&E. That’s unacceptable and undermines the principle of a truly National Health Service.”

Police crack down on anti-social abuse

By Zoe Shackleton POLICE have stepped up patrols in Ravensthorpe after reports of racially-motivated anti-social behaviour.

The increased police presence around Holroyd Park comes after a dog-walker from Mirfield was reportedly threatened by a gang of youths on a number of occasions.

The victim claims youths have also been abusing people at the nearby Holroyd Park bowling green.

Laura Hunter, of Spring Place Gardens, said: “When I’ve been out walking the dog, I’ve had abuse from a gang of Asian youths.

They’ve been throwing stones, coming past on push bikes and kicking my dog.

“They’ve been abusing people at a bowling club on the park and they’ve been jumping in their cars, they’ve gone to try and take phones off them.

“Some of the people at the bowling club are scared to go down there now.”

The 27-year-old described the abuse on social media as racially-motivated, writing that the group have been “physically attacking people shouting racial abuse and setting fires.”

Police say they are now putting more officers in the area in an effort to combat the problem.

Miss Hunter claims that the problem has been going on for weeks and she feels it has not yet been resolved.

She added: “It started at the start of the sixweek holidays for me, and for the bowls club it has been a couple of weeks before that.

“I’ve rung the police on every occasion that it has happened. They’ve said it’s a priority,

News In Brief Cause of transporter lorry fire unknown SAVILE TOWN: Firefighters were called to a blaze in a car transporter lorry on Monday night.

Crews from Dewsbury Fire Station were called to Cardwell Terrace as the cab of a car transporter was discovered alight at around 10.30pm.

It was found parked up on a road along from the BP petrol station with nobody in it, and it is not known how the fire started.

The cab was badly damaged and will have to be written off, despite firefighters’ best efforts to extinguish the flames.

INCREASED PATROLS: Police say more officers will be patrolling Holroyd Park after reports of anti-social behaviour and abuse from a gang of Asian youths not an emergency, even though we are having stones thrown at us.

“The last time I rang they didn’t even bother taking my name. They keep saying they’ll put up extra patrols but I’ve never seen any police on the park at all.”

A spokesman for West Yorkshire Police said: “Police received a report of a public order offence in Holroyd Park, Ravensthorpe, which related to abusive language being made to the victim and threats being made to her dog. This is reported to have occurred

between 4.50pm and 5.04pm on July 30.

“A 12-year-old boy was interviewed in connection with this incident but faces no further action.

“Officers have been made aware of wider issues with anti-social behaviour within the park and the local neighbourhood team are conducting increased patrols in the area to reassure park users.

“Anyone with concerns is asked to report incidents to Dewsbury and Mirfield Neighbourhood Policing Team via 101.”

GOMERSAL CC celebrated 125 years of history on Sunday.

The club, on Oxford Road, marked its ‘quasquicentennial’ anniversary with a fun day, and 125 balloons were released on the pitch by youngsters.

Local bands performed and there were dis-

plays by majorettes and dancers.

Club secretary Jenny Ellis said: “The day was a huge success, raising funds for Gomersal Cricket Club as well as local children’s charity ESCAYP. The weather was great, the bands were enjoyed and all that attended had a good day out!”

St Saviours to hold open day A CHURCH in Birstall is taking part in its ninth Heritage Open Day next weekend.

St Saviour’s Church on Brookroyd Lane, Brownhill, has been hosting an open day since 2008 as part of events which take place in 50 countries to celebrate heritage, community and history.

In fact I’d go so far as to suggest that most members of Kirklees Police would be late for their own bad-back early retirement parties.

and a bullet fired into his car headrest in Savile Town? The lorry driver shot in the leg and robbed by Asian youths in Ravensthorpe? The shots fired into a Westtown takeaway?

Those incidents were nearly 15 years ago. If anyone was ever arrested or successfully prosecuted in those (and many other) cases, then it never came to our attention.

I recall the petrol-bombing of a Batley snooker club around the same time gangsters were running round Staincliffe taking pot shots.

It took police another seven years to nail the drug dealer at the centre of that violence – a bloke who used to deal from his personalisedplated Merc in the car park at the back of Dewsbury police station, ironically.

There were bodies on one occasion, when a Bradford drugs gang faced off with their Savile Town oppos and then Labour councillor Gulfam Asif (since redeemed, heaven knows how) claimed that it was righteous local youths keeping their streets clean. Course it was. Pull the other one pal, it will ring the Hallalujah chorus.

What’s the old saying, “there’s none so blind as those who won’t see”?

Last year it was baseball bat-wielding gangs slugging it out in broad daylight in the streets of Ravy, not far from where a car was firebombed outside Mr Sparkles’ old family gaff.

got his come-uppance. He’d got so used to the Keystone Kops tripping themselves up despite his habitual criminality, he probably thought he was bulletproof. Pun intended.

According to the local plod, if there are no bodies strewn around the place, then nowt happened.

Only a few weeks ago Scout Hill residents reported shots fired during an early hours siege of a house. The police turned up, looked, talked and left. Move right along, folks, nothing to see here...

UCH as there is mitigation of sorts for the police, it’s in the ‘omerta’ code of all such organised crime gangs.

They tend to their own wounds and feuds and tend not to run to the law – except whoever it was that crashed into the station entrance on Monday, presumably trying to avoid the character(s) with the shooter.

But the wild west pit that parts of Dewsbury, Batley and Heckmondwike have become is a natural consequence of the police simply skimming over illegal activity unless and until it wakes them from their slumbers – in this case with gunshots and firebombs.

Drug dealing goes on in broad daylight, unimpeded, across the district and it has done for years and years.

Dozens, scores of businesses are cash-fronts for laundering the proceeds.

Sure, the police can throw their hands up and complain about reduced budgets, austerity, Tory cuts. Pass me a hanky.

But that wasn’t always the case and just as they have continually papered over electoral fraud because of who’s doing it, so they have systematically turned a blind eye to industrial levels of criminality, because of who is doing it.

This is just a different PC – Politically Correct – invocation of the Rotherham and Rochdale syndrome, with the drugs trade instead of sex abuse.

Even this week, with the air ambulance whisking away a gunshot victim and armed police being drafted in for a few days to ensure calm is restored, the illusion of ‘nowt really happened’ is stoically maintained.

I’ve studied the official police statements. I think their remark that these are “unrelated incidents” is supposed to reassure the public.

Err, no. That means everyone’s apparently running around with guns, bombs and scores to settle.

DCI Nicola Bryar offered comfort saying there was no terror activity involved – and who for a second thought there was? – and glibly added “this is being related to ongoing local issues”.

You don’t say, sweetheart.

Completely absent is any mention of the motives or the backgrounds of the characters involved. As usual.

Young, white, vulnerable? Just collateral damage to UK SS T SAYS something that our outrage over the case of a vulnerable young white Christian girl, aged just five, being sent to be fostered by a strict Muslim family should be so muted. We’re just not surprised by these dangerously warped public servants any longer. That’s scary.

I would love to know how many children Social Services remove from Muslim families and place with white foster parents. I might have to put a Freedom of Information request in. Maybe I’d be surprised by the answers, but I doubt it.

What was no surprise at all was the total absence of even the mildest criticism, let alone outright condemnation, by a single Labour politician.

Every time David Davies and his colleagues make a constructive suggestion, it is ridiculed by Eurocrats Michel Barnier and Jean-Claude Juncker. It’s a worrying pattern.

You’d almost think they want to spike any possible agreement in the hope that the Remoaners get their way and a second referendum...

Fan’s farewell gift

The pocket watch had distinctive markings

Police seeking help to trace pocket watch POLICE are appealing for information after a distinctive pocket watch was stolen during a burglary.

The watch, pictured, was taken from a property on Kilpin Hill Lane in Dewsbury between 4.30pm on Saturday, August 19 and 11.15am on Sunday, August 20.

It was taken alongside a TV, laptop and camera.

A police spokesman said: “Anyone with information or who is offered the watch for sale is asked to call police on 101, quoting crime reference number 13170383636.”

LIFELONG Dewsbury Rams supporter Christine Gooder, who passed away at the beginning of June, has left more than £100,000 to the club in her will.

Christine’s wish was for the money to be invested in long-term projects at the club, and not in the current playing squad.

The former teacher died in Thornhill Lees, aged 70, on June 1.

As a mark of respect and gratitude the Rams have named the new 4G pitches at their Owl Lane ground ‘The Gooder Pitches,’ in recognition of Christine’s impact on the club.

“Christine has left the bequeath so that we can invest in the future of the club,” said chairman Mark Sawyer.

“In the months before her passing Christine said that she intended to leave money to the club because it had been the love of her life.

“It is an amazing benefit to the club, it will allow us to invest in things we need and remove a bit of the strain.

“We have also named the pitches after her and her parents for all the work they put into the club.

“It gives a lasting legacy for her and her family and her bequeath will help us to pay for a number of things.

“I can’t say enough about her, Christine really cared for the club, she was a supporter since she was in her pram and she was involved in everything.”

The club have already been able to purchase a new tractor that will help to take care of the pitch at the Tetley’s Stadium.

The machine has been named after Christine’s faithful companion, Bruno the Bear.

The toy mascot attended Dewsbury games home and away with her, and Christine asked that the club take good care of him.

“The condition in her bequeath was that we looked after Bruno,” added Mr Sawyer.

“The bear has been sat in the control room for matches and will attend all fans’ forums.

“We have won every match with Bruno watching, but on Monday he wasn’t put in the control room and we got beaten.

“It may well be if we sit Bruno in the control room every game next season we will go unbeaten!

“On a serious note, the first thing we bought was a tractor to maintain the pitches, and we have already named it Bruno.”

Man’s body found in lagoon THE body of a man was found in Horbury Lagoon last weekend.

Emergency services were called to the lagoon at 7pm last Saturday after reports of a man getting into difficulty while swimming.

There was no sign of the body on Saturday, but police officers recovered the 32year-old’s body after further searches on Sunday.

He is believed to have been a Polish man from Leeds and specially-trained police officers are supporting his family.

Three teenagers have died at the spot, known locally as the Blue Lagoon, since 1995 and West Yorkshire Police are again urging people not to swim unsupervised in open water.

News In Brief Damage charge LIVERSEDGE: A man has been remanded in custody after smashing the window of a former partner - three months after missing an assault trial.

Joseph Wood, of Firthcliffe Road, was found guilty of assaulting his ex - the mother of his child - but was on the run until being arrested following the incident at her home on Booth Street, Cleckheaton.

The 21-year-old climbed up the drainpipe of her house and broke the window after finding her in bed with her new partner.

He then left and smashed the window of his ex’s car, which was parked outside on the street.

Wood pleaded guilty to two counts of criminal damage when he appeared before Kirklees Magistrates’ Court. He was committed to Leeds Crown Court for sentencing and remanded him in custody.

Father threw son, 5 MIRFIELD: A five year-old boy has been taken into care after his father threw him against a fence.

The man who cannot be named for legal reasons, admitted assaulting his son and the youngster was taken into care along with his sibling.

Kirklees Magistrates’ Court heard that the incident happened on July 29 when the family returned to their Mirfield home after a day at the fair.

The man tripped up and his son laughed at him, provoking him to chase the child down the garden and throw him against a fence, saying: “That’ll teach you to laugh at me, you little s***.”

Magistrates heard he had been drinking earlier that day. He was sentenced to 16 weeks in jail, suspended for a year, and must complete 25 days of rehabilitation.

So sad to see town centre’s decline I went into Dewsbury town centre for the first time in a while to fix my son’s glasses.

I now remember just why I don’t go there any more. What has happened to the bustling town I grew up visiting most weekends?

Almost everything that was good about the town is there no more.

Contrary to what Danny Lockwood believes, our area is not all doom and gloom.

Many events have been organised in our area over the Bank Holiday period, raising thousands of pounds for good causes.

These are not one-off events either, they are happening all the time, organised by volunteers who care and make our community strong.

Danny’s obsession and easy use of the word ‘fascism’ devalues its meaning and the crimes of the Second World War and the 50 million who died.

He’s also obsessed with his former employers at the Dewsbury Reporter series of newspapers. It’s time he moved on.

The Spenborough Guardian has been publishing for 150 years – that is something a journalist should be proud of. Another local newspaper the Huddersfield Daily Examiner has published its 50,000th edition, and good on them.

Local newspapers do a good job in reporting news in our area.

All newspapers are in decline and do not carry the influence they once had. Apparently under-35s don’t read them.

Former England and Yorkshire Cricketer Geoffrey Boycott once said he never allowed his personal opinions to effect his professional judgement.

Danny should heed those words!

This week I had the misfortune to have to deal with Kirklees with reference to council tax.

I asked for a form to be sent out to register a property for Council Tax; guess what? There are no forms, everything must be done online!

Stating I did not have access to the internet, I am told to visit the library in Birstall.

Saying I was not computer literate, I am told to go the council centre in Huddersfield.

Can someone please explain to me why we have no council office in North Kirklees?

Considering it was council tax I was trying to set up I find it particularly galling that I am looking to pay for what is a second-rate service, and the unfortunates who work in the finance department are picking up the flack.

Once again North Kirklees is left out in the cold.

Why couldn’t funds be found?

Here in Batley and Spen over 60 per cent voted Leave at the referendum because we want to put a stop to all this.

When standing for election you said you accept the local result, but when I wrote to you about the single market you didn’t even reply.

Does all this mean that you and Labour really want to oppose the referendum result and bring more EU control over our country?

Or will you finally stand up for what we want in Batley and Spen, and declare support for leaving the single market?

Time for a new approach to North From: R Spreadbury, Liversedge So Labour’s latest great idea is their current u-turn on their Britexit policy.

Unless I am mistaken, their idea is to continue paying into the unelected EU mafia club, and accept all their rules, laws and regulations dictated to us past and future, but actually have no say or influence in the making of these.

This to ensure that the UK can have access to the single market which will supposedly benefit the Northern working man.

I assume the latter is “newspeak” for Southern bankers and modern slavers.

Labour’s track record on helping the Northern working man is something of a disaster. Labour have: • Embraced neoliberalism / globalisation so their jobs can be readily moved to distant shores.

Their job stability is left to the whims of companies who are owned by greedy foreigners or hedge funds.

• Embraced multiculturalism so the towns in which they live are not “desirable” and thus they have not benefited from the astronomic rise in their property values as seen down south.

• Adopted “light touch regulation” on the financial sector whose mismanagement, bordering on criminality, ushered in the age of austerity.

This has disproportionately affected the North and still does

whilst the South recovers.

• Shut down any debate on the problems with immigration, recently exemplified by forcing Sarah Champion to resign from her post as Shadow Equalities Minister for voicing her opinions on the issues of child abuse gangs being disproportionately drawn from from a certain poorly-educated Muslim culture.

The disdain felt by Labour for the Northern working class and their concerns was laid bare with Gordon Brown’s “that bigoted woman” open mic comment a few years ago.

With these latest utterances, it is now obvious that the metropolitan Left regard all working class Northerners as politically incorrect, xenophobic, racist bigots and as such should be ignored.

They now see their electoral base as students, immigrants and the metropolitan leftie luvvies.

It really is time for a new sensible political party for the North which can draw experience from all sides of the political spectrum.

This party can take a realistic, no-nonsense approach in addressing the North’s problems with social cohesion and economic inequality, whilst at the same time making sure the ‘Northern Powerhouse’ becomes a reality and is not just a meaningless vote garnering catchphrase.

Food bank expands to help more needy

By Zoe Shackleton A VOLUNTEER food distribution service is expanding its reach to help more people in need.

The ‘Food in Bellies not Bins’ project, run by Chris Jenkinson at Dewsbury Moor RLFC, will now also be open to the public at the Masjid Madani Mosque.

The project currently runs every Wednesday afternoon at the rugby club on Heckmondwike Road.

It will launch at the Ravenshouse Road mosque on September 13.

Mr Jenkinson and his team, pictured, have been running the lottery-funded project for the past six months, with links to local supermarkets Morrisons and the Co-op, and Nando’s chicken restaurant, to help provide for those in need.

The idea is for people to fill up a bag of food and other household essentials, donated by supermarkets, and leave a small contribution.

When The Press visited this week, customers were queuing outside long before it was due to open.

Mr Jenkinson said: “We realised that there could be a need for this and if we did it efficiently and just one day a week it wouldn’t take up too much time.

“It’s something we thought we

could do that would benefit this deprived area that wouldn’t be too taxing on us either.

“We are utilising waste products - to us it’s not waste, it’s usable.”

Mr Jenkinson added: “We’re confident that what we’re doing is the right thing, it’s good for

the area.

“It’d be nice to turn it into something else, but we’re just taking it one step at a time.

“We’re working within the community and supplying and filling a need that people can’t get anywhere else.”

The project will open its doors

at the rear of the Masjid Madani Mosque, 252C Ravenshouse Road, on Wednesday, September 13 from 2pm to 3pm.

From that date, Food in Bellies not Bins will be open at Dewsbury Moor ARLFC from 4pm until 5pm, a change from its current 3-4pm slot.

Campaigners’ new quest CAMPAIGNERS are carrying on their fight to save green space in White Lee, Batley.

Plans to build almost 200 new homes on land off White Lee Road could still go ahead, despite developers Hallam Land Management withdrawing their first application.

A second identical application has now been lodged and a decision from Kirklees Council is pending.

A petition opposing the initial application attracted over 3,000 signatures, and the council have already successfully defended an appeal against plans for 66 homes on nearby land between White Lee and Carlinghow Lane.

Property developers Jones Homes had their plans blocked by a planning inspector in July.

And Clare Naughton, who has been one of the main campaigners against Hallam Land Management, hopes this is a sign of things to come.

Ms Naughton, who lives on Jail Lane, just off White Lee Road, said: “It’d be lovely if they just withdrew it (the application).

“The objection period is closed. All our objections have been lodged for the second application in exactly the same way as the first.

“But now we can’t really do anything. Until we know

what the developers are intending on doing, there’s nothing more from a campaign perspective we can do.

All we can do is keep people informed.

“That field is still under threat and we’re just waiting to see if that application will go forward.”

She added: “People are just fed up of every little bit of green that we have getting built on.

“The only reason they’re building on green fields is to suit the developer because it’s cheaper. Why are we accommodating the developers? We should be thinking about the people in the local area.”

Empty surgery gets makeover AN EMPTY GP practice is set to be turned into a new state-of-the-art surgery after being closed seven years ago.

The building on Cook Lane in Heckmondwike, pictured, has been vacant since Brookroyd Surgery moved to new premises at Heckmondwike Health Centre in 2010.

It is getting a major revamp, including four new treatment rooms and a room for minor operations as well as better waiting areas and administration space.

Set to open this autumn the building, which is being transformed by healthcare property specialist Assura plc, will create a fit-for-purpose premises for the nearby Albion Street Surgery which serves 2,600 patients.

said: “We can’t wait to move into the newlook building - we need space to keep developing our offer to patients and this will give us the premises to do that.

“It’s very exciting to see it taking shape and we very much look forward to the end result.”

Long search for William’s relatives yields results HERE has been much publicity recently about the Dewsbury soldier, Lance Corporal William Loney, who is buried in an unmarked grave in Holland, writes Margaret Watson.

The 26-year-old former pupil of St Paulinus School, Westtown, was killed in the Battle of Arnhem 73 years ago, but his family were never to know where he was buried.

Now, thanks to dedicated research by Dutch historians, it has been revealed that an unknown soldier buried in the Oosterbeek War Cemetery was that of William.

The Dewsbury soldier, whose headstone stated simply – ‘A soldier of the 1939-45 war’, will soon have a new headstone bearing his name.

A nationwide search was recently launched to find relatives of William to give them the opportunity of attending a service to re-dedicate the new headstone in two weeks’ time.

Until last week, it was believed William had no living descendants of the Loney family, and so the search was widened to trace relatives on the side of his mother, whose

maiden name was Oates.

Dewsbury war historian Peter Bennett, who has been researching William’s war history for 20 years, was delighted this week to discover relatives of the Loney family still living in Dewsbury.

He hopes there is still time to arrange for them to be present at the ceremony and to lay a wreath at their ancestor’s final resting place.

Other men from Dewsbury also fought in the Battle of Arnhem, including one who was killed, and there were many who were captured and sent to German prison camps.

William and his comrades in the Parachute Regiment had been dropped into Holland on that day as part of Operation Market Garden – an Allied attempt to capture and hold bridges over the Rhine.

William, who had lived in Park Parade, Westtown, had been parachuted into Arnhem, but was immediately caught up in heavy street fighting.

He and another soldier, Norman Shipley, were caught in the open and cut down by enemy troops.

Norman lay where they fell for some days before being hastily buried, but in the chaos of battle, no record was taken of their identities.

At the end of the war, the Commonwealth War Graves Commission embarked on a project to identify and properly bury those soldiers who had been listed as unknown.

Later Dutch historian Marcel Anker chronicled the bravery of a band of airborne troops who had held out for two days.

Much painstaking research led to the body of an unmarked soldier’s grave in the war cemetery in Oosterbeek – that of William.

Peter Bennett, himself a parishioner of St Paulinus Church, has spent 20 years investigating what happened to William in the battle and where he might be buried.

William’s name is featured on the town war memorial and also on a plaque within the church of Our Lady and St Paulinus Church.

Peter, who co-authored a book about the men from St Paulinus Church killed in both world wars, will be attending the re-dedication of William’s grave on September 13 and will lay a wreath there on behalf of the church.

ANCE Corporal William Loney, 26-year old son of William and Mary Ellen Loney, was reported missing in the Arnhem offensive of September 1944.

Born on July 25 1918, he attended St Paulinus School and played football in the school team in the position of goalkeeper.

On leaving school at the age of 14, he went to work at the woollen mill of Newsome and Spedding Ltd, on Aldams Road, Dewsbury.

HE Battle of Arnhem may have been long forgotten by most, but for the people of Dewsbury with loved ones fighting there at that time, it was a time of great anxiety.

The course of this grim battle was followed by thousands with increasing anxiety for the safety of their relatives and friends.

Only 3,000 were fated to return from the battle but amongst them were two local men, Sgt Michael Ryan and Pte Cyril Pryke, whose photographs appear on this page.

Pte Pryke, was 24, and his wife and two children lived at 7 Tolson Street, Streetside, Chickenley.

He had been in the Army since the outbreak of war, serving in the Territorial Army, known as ‘The Terriers’.

His wife lived with her mother, Mrs Halstead, of 3 Syke Avenue, Earlsheaton, and had attended Earlsheaton School. At the time she was an assistant at the Co-operative Stores in Chickenley.

Sgt Ryan, aged 23, was a native of Ipswich, but had been stationed in Dewsbury, and like many of his pals, visited the ‘Moot Hall’ in Dewsbury, which became their main source of recreation and entertainment.

It was at the Moot Hall where he met his future wife, Beatrice Halstead, a singer, and after a short courtship they were married in 1943.

There were others fighting in the battle who returned to England safely, but whether they returned to fight or if they survived the rest of the war, there is no record.

A second Dewsbury man was killed in the Battle of Arnhem, but not on the same day as William, and he too is buried in the same cemetery.

He was Pte Donald Shaw Byram, aged 21, of the Dorsetshire Regiment, son of Percy and Zilpha Byram, of Shaw Cross, Dewsbury.

Some months prior to his death he had been on leave in Dewsbury, and was interviewed in a local newspaper.

He spoke about the action he had seen while taking part in the North African campaign.

In one action they were saved from a heavy German attack by the Germans themselves dive-bombing their own troops.

William, who was later to volunteer for the Parachute Regiment, had a brother, Albert, and a sister, Rosie, but neither ever married.

Another sister, Mary, did marry and had a son named William Buckley, born in 1935 and married in 1959, but he passed away without having children.

William was buried as an unknown Lance Corporal but because there were not many Lance Corporals buried in that way, researchers were able to narrow it down.

They submitted their evidence to the Dutch Ministry of Defence in 2009 and were told their research was correct, and in 2015, the UK MoD checked and approved it.

Peter Bennett said: “It is quite a rigorous process, and since 2015 they have been searching to find William’s relatives. I’m delighted some of his relatives have at last been found.

“We are trying to arrange for them to travel to Holland to be at the ceremony.

Housing plan battle on cards

By Steve Martyn KIRKLEES Council could face a battle from concerned Cleckheaton residents after provisional plans to build up to 55 homes on green fields were revealed.

The council has owned the land off Kenmore Drive for a number of years and it has been earmarked for housing for the past two decades.

But residents have raised concerns about what this could mean for surrounding areas.

Cleckheaton councillor Baroness Kath Pinnock admitted the plans should come as no surprise, but that local residents have a right to be concerned.

She said on social media: “The main problem is access - as everyone who lives there or knows the site will appreciate.

“The roads off Kenmore Road are narrow and there is on-street parking as not all houses have drives.”

Coun Pinnock (Lib Dem) added: “It’s a hilly site and there is no obvious access so the council have steered clear of developing it so far.

“Cleckheaton doesn’t have that much in the way of open space that’s accessible and secondly, that access is going to be terrible.”

Residents have taken to social media to raise their concerns, with one saying: “Really hope this doesn’t go ahead.”

One user added: “The visual impact of this proposed development will be devastating and irreversible to this valuable grassland area of natural beauty and diversity.”

Initial plans show that there could be 55 detached and semi-detached homes, and that enhanced accessibility to the site would also be acquired.

A Kirklees Council spokesman said: “An outline planning application has recently been submitted for the land off Kenmore Drive, Cleckheaton.

“This application is currently being consulted on and no decision has been made.

“The council as the landowner is entitled to apply for planning permission on its own land.

“The application will be considered in the usual way, and the decision on the application will be made by the appropriate planning committee.

“The council’s cabinet has previously agreed to progress disposal of the site.”

People have until next Wednesday, September 6 to have their say on the plans and a decision will be made later this year.

MPs demand fresh look at TransPennine rail upgrade MPs Paula Sherriff and Tracy Brabin have joined other Yorkshire Labour MPs in calling on the government to end transport funding inequality.

The group of MPs want the Tory government to reconsider the recent decision to suspend the planned electrification upgrade of the TransPennine railway line.

Ms Sherriff (Dewsbury & Mirfield) and Ms Brabin (Batley & Spen) signed a letter that was sent to Transport Secretary Chris Grayling stating: “Instead of backing the North and its transport infrastructure, you have presided over underfunding, broken promises and a scandalous north-south disparity in investment.

“We need the requisite powers and funding from central government, something you have resolutely refused to release from your grip.

“We implore you to reconsider the cancellation of electrification of the TransPennine and Midland

Mainline routes in favour of slower, less reliable, more polluting bi-mode trains.”

In 2015, the government pledged to make better rail links for the North. Ms Sherriff pointed out to Mr Grayling that the UK has one of the biggest regional disparities in Europe, with £1,943 of investment per person in London, compared to just £190 per person in Yorkshire.

She said: “How is it that the government can somehow find billions of pounds to throw at London, but has to downgrade projects and carry on letting us down in Yorkshire and across the North?

“The Tories just do not get what life is like for passengers up here in the North.

“We have commuters trying to get to work on old, dilapidated, often late-running pacer trains and ticket costs are spiralling.

“As long as I am an MP, I will continue to work to push for more affordable and efficient trains here in Yorkshire.”

Mirfield’s ‘bloomin’ great THE Mirfield Allotments and Gardens Society Annual Show was a blooming great success once again.

There were more than 450 entries and medals, trophies and certificates were handed out to winners in dozens of classes and categories at the show on Saturday.

Previously held at St Paul’s Church in Eastthorpe, this year’s event was hosted by Mirfield Community Centre.

Guides seeking support A GROUP of girl guides are raising funds for their expedition to South Africa next year by commandeering part of Oakwell Hall.

The girls, from South Yorkshire, are serving refreshments on Saturdays and Sundays from 11am-3pm in the Countryside Centre at the country park.

They plan to travel to a village in Lesotho, in aid of charity Africa’s Gift, where they will work with the local community to improve their standard of living.

Jennie Hawes is the assistant heritage manager at Oakwell Hall and one of the leaders of the girl guide unit.

She said: “People from our area have undertaken various projects in the village of Malealea over the years and the guides are excited to go to continue changing these people’s lives for the better.

The fundraising refreshments will be available from the Countryside Centre every weekend until the end of September.

School keyed up for new term A SCHOOL in Cleckheaton has been given the keys to its new building.

Whitcliffe Mount headteacher Jennifer Templar, was handed the keys last Friday, August 25, after work was completed on the building in time for the start of the school year.

Part of the community at Oak Park

By David Bentley A CARE home in Dewsbury says that its ‘Good’ rating across the board from inspectors is down to the hard work and dedication of its staff.

Oak Park, on Walnut Lane in Chickenley, opened in May 2016 and was inspected for the first time earlier this year.

It is almost impossible for a facility to be given an ‘Outstanding’ rating in its first inspection, and owners Darrington Healthcare were pleased with the findings.

The 66-bed home, on Walnut Lane in Chickenley, was purpose-built on the site of the former Grange council care home and features quiet lounges, a beauty salon, cinema, cafe, bar and multi-activity room.

Most of the current residents are aged over 75 and are cared for by almost 60 staff, plus a team of local volunteers.

What do website owners need to do?

If you access your website on a desktop computer and look to the left-hand side of the website address bar, you will see either the words ‘Secure’ in green or you will see the ‘i’.

If your website has the latter, when you click on this you should see the message ‘your connection to this site is not secure’.

This means the site should be upgraded to HTTPS. The process of upgrading involves the purchase of a TLS SSL Secure Certificate, which will need to be installed on the server where the website is hosted.

You will need your current website provider to do this. They will also need to set up the new HTTPS pages for your website and then redirect the old HTTP pages to these new ones.

The process is relatively simple,

with friendly links established with local schools and churches.

There’s a residents’ meeting every three monhs and a suggestion box, from which ideas are incorporated into the running of the home.

OOGLE have announced that from October 2017 all websites that are not protected with HTTPS security will show a ‘NOT SECURE’ warning when users enter text into the site.

This will apply to search fields, contact forms and any area of the website where users input any information.

HTTPS Security Update: urgent action required Google originally announced that they would be making these changes to the information they provide users when accessing websites using the Google Chrome browser (accounting for over 40% of website sessions) at the end of 2016.

Earlier this year an update included an information icon in the left of the address bar for websites that are not HTTPS secure.

We have been expecting this latest update, effectively forcing all website owners to move to HTTPS security, as a move to evolve general online security and provide more protection to users.

Where the last update could go unnoticed by website users (particularly those using mobile devices), the changes coming into force in October will effectively force website owners to make the upgrade, or likely face a loss of enquiries through these new, stark, ‘NOT SECURE’ warnings.

Upscale burger plans for Mirfield MIRFIELD could soon be home to a gourmet burger restaurant.

Top chef Eric Paxman has bought the former Yorkshire Building Society premises on the high street and plans to launch a second 'PAX Burger’ outlet following the success of his first venture in Lindley, Huddersfield.

The orginal PAX Burger opened in February 2016 and has been a major success.

Eric, who also runs an award-winning restaurant called ‘Eric’s’, thinks the former YBS branch on Huddersfield Road is the perfect spot to open his second burger place.

“There’s nothing else like this in Mirfield,” he said.

“Everywhere else around Huddersfield is saturated with restaurants and bars and when this came up I thought it would make a great PAX Burger.

“I’m hoping to open at the beginning of next year, but it all depends on planning.”

He began when he was aged just 14 and after becoming a star in the 1950s through the ITV series Sunday Night At The London Palladium, he went on to host game shows like The Generation Game, Play Your Cards Right and The Price Is Right. The entertainer told me at one of many meetings: “You know Ann, showbiz is a funny game because you rely on the public, and I have been so lucky they have enjoyed my work. I truly owe it all to them, and without them I would have not enjoyed such a fun career.” What a star.

However, star Lesley Joseph told me that she is looking to reveal all for dedicated fans. “We get asked about it all the time, and I am so glad it’s still so popular,” she said.

STRICTLY’S Karen Clifton tells me that she is of course ambitious, and her dancer husband Kevin is very competitive too. “I think it works well for us, I mean we are not perfect, but I know we watch each other like hawks on the show, to see who gets the most points,” she said.

EMMERDALE’S Anthony Quinlan tells me that should the acting work dry up then he has a plan. “I really want to run my own gym and teach there,” he said. “I have numerous friends in the fitness industry who want to come on board. I definitely think it will become a reality for me at some point.”

Fans complete Pink March to Wembley BATLEY BULLDOGS supporters completed their 10k walk from London Broncos to Wembley on Saturday.

Over 120 fans joined in with the five who had begun the march all the way from Headingley at the beginning of last week.

The walk capped the ‘Pink Weekend’

fundraising efforts, that aimed to raise money for Breast Cancer charities.

Best festival yet BATLEY Festival is just around the corner, and the community is rallying round in an attempt to make it the best yet.

The Market Place will be buzzing with residents and those who have come from further afield, as the festival is known to welcome up to 6,000 people.

Crowds will be treated to an amazing lineup of fun-filled performances, entertainment and events, the bulk of which are taking place in the Market Place between 11am and 5pm on Saturday, September 9.

The family-friendly festival will have an array of around 40 stalls selling home-made

goods, activities for all ages plus performances from professional visiting artists and entertainers.

Community groups will be performing on the open-air main stage, with a special show from The Sarah Taylor School of Dance and more groups are yet to be named.

Over the weekend, there will also be a visit from IOU Theatre and their converted doubledecker bus presenting Rear View - a show that takes the audience on a ride around the town as two poets take you on a moving adventure.

Sir Bruce Forsyth and Ann Montini Rossdale has said he will miss his role as a coach on ITV’s The Voice, but labelled it a ‘great experience’. A source at the ITV talent show tells me: “He failed to radiate any real interest and did not connect with the viewers, so sadly it will be just one series for Gavin.”

FORMER Bake-Off host Sue Perkins says she agreed to a stint on Celebrity Big Brother during a career lull.

“I said yes and then in many ways regretted it, but not many people remember me on there, so that is a bonus,” she said. “No, I would not be doing it now would I, but back then it was okay.”

COMEDY legend Barry Cryer’s hit book ‘Mrs Hudson’s Diaries’ by him and his son, Bob Cryer, will be adapted for a Christmas special. Mrs Hudson’s Radio Show follows Sherlock Holmes’s landlady, and Barry told me: “I am so pleased that it took off as it’s quirky, but that is all comedy I think.

But this is just daft fun.”

EMMERDALE actor Matthew Wolfenden has played David Metcalfe since 2006, and before that was seen on stage in Saturday Night Fever. He tells me he has no plans to leave the show, because: “It’s the best place to work and you cover some great storylines that you would not get anywhere else.

I do miss stage work for sure, but again we have so many great challenges here, why leave?”

SIR DAVID JASON has no intention of stepping away from the small screen, saying “acting has been my life”.

“You know Ann it’s a bonus to get paid to do this,” he said. “What is there not to like? I have enjoyed so much success, I don’t want to give it up, but I know one day it will give me up for sure.”

‘Politically speaking’ Getting them a better deal ONGRATULATIONS to all the young people across Dewsbury, Mirfield, Denby Dale and Kirkburton who’ve had their A-level and GCSE results this month.

After months of suspense, it can be a stressful time for parents, teachers and of course students themselves.

I visit our local schools and colleges whenever I can and it’s always great to hear about local students’ plans for the future.

Now, like hundreds of young people across our area, they will be making important decisions about what to do next.

Whether they decide to go on to do further studies, college courses, university or head out into the world of work or into an apprenticeship, thankfully help and advice is close at hand thanks to our great local schools and colleges.

But much more still needs to be done to ensure there are opportunities for young people to get them into jobs and training so they can get on and do well.

After all their efforts, I hope everyone can now cel-

ebrate their achievements.

Young people who have worked so hard for their exams deserve the chances to get on and do well.

But like many other local people, I am worried about whether the next generation have the chances to do better than the last.

Young people have been devalued and discriminated against by this government – not least by having their entitlement to housing benefit removed and university tuition fees increased.

It is time to end this discrimination, to ease the burden on young people, and show them that they are valued members of our society.

With the number of young people out of work for over a year still way too high, wages still stagnant and high rents preventing young people from leaving the family home or getting on the housing ladder, we need to make sure there are enough of the right opportunities for our young people to get the education, training, jobs and other opportunities to get on and do well.

We need a strong industrial strategy to create good jobs and training programmes and boost investment, growth and employment.

Over the coming weeks I’ll be keeping up the pressure to get young people a better deal.

We need strong action now to prevent a whole generation of young people falling behind.

It will fascinate and repulse you in equal measure as you try to understand the reasons and motives behind such evil, If this is my first Chris Carter book it certainly isn’t going to be my last.

Photo display now open DEWSBURY Photographic Group’s annual exhibition is on public display in Dewsbury Town Hall.

Group members were invited to submit their images and prints to the competition, which was reviewed by a Yorkshire Photographic Union judge. The selected work celebrates the diversity of imagery being created by the members of the group, at all levels of photographic practice.

The exhibition runs until October 1 and can be seen in Dewsbury Town Hall foyer during normal opening hours.

LAST Saturday saw the Dewsbury and District Ramblers walk from Harewood Bridge on field paths to Kirkby Overblow and onto the villages of Kearby and Netherby, before following the River Wharfe back to Harewood.

The day after, a group of walkers set off from Elland and made their way through Southowram onto Bank Top Beacon and Sunny Vale in an 11-mile walk led by Peter O’Connor.

In a change to the syllabus, this Sunday's scheduled walk (Sept 3) has been changed to Sunday, September 10 and walkers are asked to meet Cynthia O'Driscoll at the Wellington Road car park in Dewsbury at 8.30am.

Open day, new season and youth places DEWSBURY Arts Group will be opening its doors on Saturday September 9, between 12.30pm and 3pm as part of the Heritage Open Days scheme.

There will be the opportunity to explore behind the scenes at the Artspace building, on Lower Peel Street, which is a former Victorian Quaker meeting house.

You can learn more about the group and there will be exhibitions, performances, refreshments and more.

The Arts Group’s new season opens with the funny and poignant play ‘Entertaining Angels’ by Richard Everett, with performances on September 30 and from October 2-7.

CRICKET WITH MIKE POPPLEWELL

Hanging Heaton Scholes struggling to get over the line hone in on title HANGING HEATON are closing in on the All Rounder Cricket Bradford Premier League Premier Division title.

This is the 37th season of Bradford League cricket for the Dewsbury side and though they carried off the title four times in the first 20 years, the ‘cupboard’ has been a little bare since.

Tomorrow they are at home to relegation-threatened East Bierley for their penultimate game and they need just 15 points from the last two games to finish as Premier Division champions.

In their last game they made short work of Cleckheaton at Moorend as

openers Nick Connelly (75) and skipper Gary Fellows (116) added 153 for the first wicket, on the way to a total of 244-6 and an eventual 83run win.

Overseas spinner Muhammed Rameez collected 5-31 as Cleckheaton struggled to make 161-9 in reply.

With only seven points separating the last four teams it looks very much like Cleckheaton, in second-bottom spot, bottom-club Pudsey Congs, third-bottom Bierley and fourth-bottom Batley are in the dogfight to avoid the drop.

Bierley have a tough task at Hanging Heaton, Cleckheaton need to earn a decent points haul from their

trip to Bradford and Bingley, while Congs travel to Lightcliffe.

Promoted Batley are at New Farnley in a relegation tussle that is too close to call as they battle to avoid the drop back into the Championship.

Farsley’s defeat last week severely dented their hopes but they go to Woodlands in a last bid to close the gap on the boys from Bennett Lane.

While Hanging Heaton have a superb opportunity to clinch the title tomorrow, the relegation issue looks certain to go to the last day of the season.

All remaining games this season will commence at 12pm.

SCHOLES, relegated from the Premier Division at the end of last season, began their campaign looking hot favourites for an immediate return to the top flight.

But former CYL giants Methley and Wrenthorpe have made it an uneasy second half of the season for the New Popplewell Lane side.

In their last round of Championship One games Wrenthope (282pts) completed a twowicket win over Methley (302pts) and Scholes (299pts) surprisingly lost by one run against Morley.

Undercliffe and Morley are still just about in the frame as promotion candidates, which makes the importance of Scholes’ visit to Methley next week inestimable.

But before that, James Stansfield’s Scholes men are at home tomorrow to an Ossett side who are not yet totally out of the woods in the relegation scrap.

Wrenthorpe are at home to Graham Hilton’s inconsistent Gomersal as they slowly

edge closer to the relegation zone.

Leaders Methley, meanwhile, face a bit of a banana skin at Undercliffe, and Morley go to Bankfoot (164pts) in one of several games likely to impact on relegation.

Elsewhere Yeadon, also on 164 pts, go to Bowling Old Lane (148pts), and bottom-club Birstall (111pts) are at mid-table Baildon.

Birstall have made that bottom spot their own this season as week after week hopes for a change in fortune have looked increasingly unlikely.

In their last game Bankfoot were 60 -7 at one point, chasing a Birstall total of 127, but recovered to complete a two-wicket win and it looks likely that relegation could be confirmed at Baildon tomorrow.

• Methley’s former Cleckheaton all-rounder Marcus Walmsley took the man of the match award at last week's Priestley Cup final with a 4-41 return followed by a top-scoring 93 but still finished on the losing side as New Farnley ran out 24-run winners at Undercliffe CC.

Hartshead Moor clinch Championship Two trophy in style SEASON-LONG leaders Hartshead Moor duly clinched the Championship Two title last week with a demolition of second-placed Altofts, and they can now enjoy their last three games - starting tomorrow when they go to Carlton.

It is looking increasingly grim for Spen Vic, ahead of their visit from neighbours Liversedge, beaten by Hopton Mills in their last game, while Mills could find it tough going at fourth-placed Northowram Fields tomorrow, and Brighouse cannot expect too much joy at promotionchasing Altofts.

Late drama in Ossett derby Final Venture the one to pick OSSETT TOWN got their first league win over Ossett Albion in nearly four years in a dramatic 2-1 win on Monday afternoon.

Town took an early lead as the ball landed at the feet of Martin Pembleton who lashed the ball home from the edge of the area.

Kai Hancock then had the chance to double Town’s lead from the penalty spot but saw his effort saved by Parker in the Albion goal.

Town keeper Leigh Overton was then called into action in the second half as Albion tried to take advantage of the away side’s wasted opportunities.

Danny South equalised for Albion seven minutes from time as he headed past Overton.

The fourth official signalled for four minutes of added time but Town only need one minute to get themselves back in front.

THORNHILL TROJANS won the Jim Brown Heavy Woollen Cup for the third year running with victory over rivals Shaw Cross Sharks.

It was the second consecutive year that the sides contested the final, and it proved to be a fierce derby clash with a total of three yellow cards.

The Trojans had the first real opportunity of the game as a short ball nearly put Tom Gledhill in, but Ross Roebuck made a superb try-saving tackle to keep the scores level.

The Sharks then took the lead as Matthew Tebb scooted from dummy half and dived over underneath the posts, Casey Johnson duly added the extras.

Thornhill responded as the ball was flung wide to George Woodcock who darted over on the right-hand side.

Shaw Cross were then reduced to 12 men as Brandan French was

The Sharks’ second-half dominance looked to have paid off when Paul March made a break for the line from 10 metres out.

The referee waited before giving a knock on against March and awarding the scrum to Thornhill.

Thornhill then punished Shaw Cross with their first real attack of the half.

The ball was moved wide to Luke Carter who burst clear and sold the dummy to dot down in the corner.

Thornhill then sealed the win as James Craven pounced on a loose ball and raced 50 metres to score.

The conversion was wide but it proved to be of little significance as the referee blew for full time two minutes later.

THORNHILL TROJANS A hung on to secure a thrilling victory, led by man-of-thematch and hat-trick hero Joe Waters.

Waters opened the scoring when he dummied over from close range.

Jake Hickling increased the lead when he raced in to score a try which Richard Llewellyn converted.

Next to cross was Jordan

Clayton with Llewellyn converting.

This sparked Ossett Trinity into life as Ash Berry scored an unconverted try.

This was swiftly followed by a try from Jake Simmonds which Dave Berry converted.

Thornhill responded as Scott Green broke clear and slid over for a try in the corner.

Joe Waters then dummied over from close range for another try.

In the run-up to half-time Thornhill’s James Folan was sin-binned for pushing, giv-

ing Ossett the opportunity to score through Arron Williams and the Trojans led 24-18 at the break.

Ossett responded early in the second period with a Nick Mitchell try.

Thornhill replied as Waters completed his hat-trick before Llewellyn went in at the corner.

Trinity hit back with tries from Berry and Craig Colbeck before Llewellyn kicked a penalty to settle Trojans’ nerves.

A late Berry try wasn’t enough for Ossett as Thornhill held on for the win.

MIRFIELD Free Grammar Year 9 rugby team were unable to cap a succesful year as they were beaten in their Champion Schools Final last Friday afternoon.

Glantaf, appearing in their third successive Champion Schools final, outplayed Mirfield.

Harri Griffiths opened the scoring following a fine break down the right with Jac Lloyd adding the conversion for a 6-0 lead.

It took a while for the Yorkshire side to mount their first real attack but handling errors meant they weren’t able to capitalise.

Glantaf doubled their lead following a flow-

ing move that was finished off by Rhodri Thomas. Jac Lloyd added the conversion and just before half time Josh Atkinson claimed another try to make it 16-0 at the interval.

Mirfield began the second half in positive fashion and had a potential try disallowed through a forward pass. This was the closest they got to scoring.

Atkinson claimed his second try before Glantaf were forced into some strong defensive work.

But the Welsh side had the final say when Iwan Johnes went over for a try.

THIRTY points without reply in the second half earned St John Fisher the Champion Schools trophy.

Caitlin Beevers went over for the first try, which she also converted, and that was to be the start of a 36-point haul.

Castleford replied with a try from Mia Churm but St John Fisher extended their lead when Lameeyaa Noor went over in the corner. The conversion by Beevers made it

12-4 and she was on target minutes later following her own brilliant long-range try.

Just before half-time, Mia Stephenson kept Castleford in touch with a try to make it 18-10 at the break.

They scored again at the start of the second half with Courtney Pointon touching down. Harvey’s conversion made it 18-16.

But St John Fisher then took control of the game as Beevers ran in three tries and Isabel Bibby collected two.

ST JOHN FISHER Year 8 Girls won a hardfought contest which remained in the balance until late in the second half.

St Peter’s put their opponents under pressure from the start but some resolute defence from St John Fisher kept them at bay.

Ruby Enright opened the scoring for the Dewsbury side after seven minutes when she seized onto a grubber kick on the sixth

tackle and dived over.

Enright converted her own try but St Peter’s drew level when Osazy Osarenwinda crossed for a try which Faye Richardson converted.

St John Fisher regained the lead after Paige Lister touched down following a strong run.

Just before half-time they increased their lead thanks to a powerful burst from Gabrielle Akaidere.

Enright’s conversion making it 18-6 at the interval.

However the Manchester side came back into the game when Osarenwinda collected her second try.

Richardson’s conversion reduced the arrears to six points.

Fisher eased ahead once again when Courtney Gooch touched down and Enright added the extras.

Back came St Peter’s with a try and conversion from Richardson to reduce the deficit to only six points.

However St John Fisher then wrapped things up with try and conversion from Enright.

Ben McKenna at the Tetley’s Stadium DEWSBURY RAMS lost their first home game since the beginning of May as relegation-threatened Swinton Lions brought an end to their five-game winning streak on Monday afternoon.

The Rams missed the opportunity to move level on points with Sheffield but still had their place in the Championship Shield semi-finals confirmed thanks to Oldham’s win over Rochdale.

The hosts struggled to get into any kind of rhythm throughout the afternoon and fell behind inside the first four minutes.

Chris Hankinson received a short ball close to the line and went in between the Rams defenders to open the scoring.

Dewsbury responded with a try of their own just under 10 minutes later as Gareth Potts scored for the second game running.

The ball was moved swiftly along the attacking line to Potts, who managed to somehow stay in the field of play and ground the ball in the corner.

The Rams then conceded a penalty in front of the posts. Swinton opted to kick for goal and Hankinson stepped up to edge his side back in front.

Dewsbury went in search of a second try but were unable to find a way through the Lions’ defence.

Sam Day knocked on from five metres out before Dom Speakman had the chance to put Dale Morton in but opted to run the ball himself.

TOO LITTLE TOO LATE: Aaron Brown’s late try sparked a fight back from Dewsbury but Swinton held on to take the two points Swinton had few scoring chances but proved efficient any time they were close to the Rams line.

The visitors went further ahead on the half-hour mark as stand-off Ben White touched down close to the posts.

There was a hint of a forward pass in the build-up as the ball was thrown

wide to Mike Butt, who put in a superb grubber that was gathered and grounded by White.

Five minutes later Josh Barlow scored Swinton’s third try of the afternoon.

The powerful forward burst from dummy half and twisted out of the tack-

les to score in the right corner, despite three Dewsbury defenders attempting to stop him.

The lead was then extended by a further two points as Hankinson kicked another penalty goal.

Dewsbury reduced the deficit before half time as Speakman nipped through a gap from 30 metres out and rode the tackles to score next to the posts.

As the second half got underway the game became riddled with errors as the Rams found it difficult to find the attacking flow that saw them defeat Sheffield and Toulouse.

Swinton extended their lead with 20 minutes of the second half played through centre Illias Bergal.

White called for the ball on the last tackle and put a well-weighted kick into the corner. Bergal leaped above Potts to gather and ground.

Lucas Walshaw pulled a try back for Dewsbury soon after, as he received the ball and darted through a gap to dot down.

The visitors then pushed their lead to 13 points thanks to a third penalty goal from Hankinson and a drop goal from White.

Aaron Brown restored hope for Dewsbury when Day broke the line and fed the ball to his teammate, who dummied the pass and shrugged off the fullback to reduce the deficit.

Moments later Day scored a try of his own as he took a quick tap from five metres out and stretched his arm over the whitewash to put only a single point between the teams.

The home side then threatened to make a break down the left wing but were penalised for a forward pass.

Ben Austin sealed the two points for Swinton as he forced his way over the line from five metres out and scored underneath the posts.

DEWSBURY RAMS chairman Mark Sawyer this week revealed that some of the club’s income has steadily dropped over recent years.

Sawyer says that several revenue streams have yielded a lower income than expected this year, causing the club to worry about holding onto some members of their squad.

The news comes at a bad time for the club who are currently seeking to maintain their current salary cap – which will allow them to keep the majority of players they have while also being able to bring in some new faces for 2018.

The club have been asked by the RFL to indicate how they will be able to boost their income next season.

One way that Dewsbury have tried to increase income is by asking fans without a 2017 season ticket to make a pledge to

Sawyer has said that there have been 32 new pledges for season tickets, but he was hoping to get as many as 100 supporters pledging.

“What we are trying to do is keep our salary cap where it has been this season,” said the chairman “There are many areas where our income has dropped such as season tickets, programme sales, shirt sales and many other things.

“We know it is something that is affecting clubs right across the board at our level.

“If we are to keep the players we want to keep and bring one or two new players in – we need to get our income streams back up.

“Over a relatively small period our income has dropped and as we stand at the moment we would lose some players.”

Leak scored the final points of the half as he darted through to get his name on the scoreboard for a second time and stretch Batley’s lead to 14 points.

Diskin geared up for another derby clash BATLEY boss Matt Diskin says that form will go out of the window when the Bulldogs face-off at home against Dewsbury this weekend.

Sunday’s game will be the second time that the sides have met in a matter of months, with Batley coming out on top in the fixture on July 9.

Diskin is expecting Dewsbury to be full of confidence after a recent upturn in form, but he is determined to notch a second consecutive victory over the Rams after only winning one game from their four meetings this season.

“There have been plenty of derby games this year, we are in some half-decent form and Dewsbury have been flying, apart from their loss on Monday, so I’m sure they will be full of confi-

dence,” said Diskin.

“Whoever you play at home you would like to think you have a slight advantage.

“But when you come up against local rivals, pride is on the line and home advantage and form can go out of the window.

“We want to beat them again because they are up on us so far this year.”

Batley go into Sunday’s home game having won their last outing against Bradford in the Kingstone Press Championship Shield, and Diskin feels his team are starting to be more consistent in implementing his ideals.

The former Bulls player also believes the win over his old club shows that his team are learning their lessons.

He said: “The players are slow-

Kelly wants better defensive display

By Ben McKenna RAMS coach Neil Kelly says his team need to be at their best defensively when they visit Batley Bulldogs on Sunday afternoon (3pm).

The Rams boss has said that he will be surprised if his side don’t face a tough test when they travel to their closest rivals at the weekend.

Sunday’s game will be the fifth meeting between the clubs this season – Dewsbury have won three of the four encounters so far – but Kelly believes Batley will pose a threat across all areas of the pitch.

“We are expecting a tough test, we will be disappointed if we don’t get one,” said Kelly.

“We need to defend better at Batley, on Monday we scored 28 points and still didn’t win, so we know that we need to improve our defence but we need to be smarter all round.

“Matt Diskin has done superbly well at Batley, he seems to be stamping his authority on the team and I am hearing that they have been putting in some good performances.

“They have turned their performances and results around and they have a lethal combination in (Patch) Walker and (Dom) Brambani.

“They offer a threat right across the park.”

The Rams lost their first game in the Shield at home to Swinton on Bank Holiday Monday.

Kelly says that his team must learn from the mistakes made during that game as they aim to rebuild momentum ahead of the semi-finals.

He said: “Swinton adopted certain tactics that disrupted our flow and unfortunately we fell for it and got involved in playing a style of game that benefited Swinton.

“We know other teams will come and play us and adopt the same tactics and we need to work out how to get around that.”

Dewsbury have also convinced Josh Guzdek to sign a one-year extension, despite interest from some fulltime clubs.

Kelly is pleased to have the young full-back on board for next season, but he has said that Guzdek is likely to be out for the rest of the year after suffering an injury against Swinton.

“Josh is a very good player, that is

why we were determined to keep him - he is the kind of player that can take the club forward and I am pleased that he has signed,” said Kelly.

“However Josh is going to have an operation on his hand and is likely to miss the rest of the season, there is an outside chance he could be back but we won’t risk him.”

Aaron Brown has also signed a new deal to stay at the club while Jordan Crowther is due to join on a 12-month loan from Wakefield for the 2018 season.

James Brown who underwent surgery this past week for a bicep tear that ended his season.

The Bulldogs boss has also said he will not be resting anyone ahead of the Shield semi-finals as he wants his side to go into the knockout games full of momentum.

“We are building week to week, no-one will be getting rested unless they need it,” added Diskin.

“We are looking to improve ourselves as the weeks go on so that when we get to the semifinals we can be switched on and deliver a performance.”

Diskin has also said that the club are making progress with potential recruits for next season but has yet to specify who they are in discussions with.

Rams fans vote in favour of new logo DEWSBURY RAMS will have a new logo for the start of the 2018 season after supporters voted overwhelmingly in favour of changing the current badge.

Only one supporter voted against scrapping the current logo when a vote took place at a fans’ forum on Tuesday evening.

The club wanted to have a logo that could include the colours of red, amber and black and one that was an original design, as the current badge is an adaption of the NFL’s St Louis (now Los Angeles) Rams logo.

“Some of the fans groups came to us and said that they wanted the badge to be revamped,” said club chairman Mark Sawyer.

“We have got four design options now and it will be put to the whole fanbase on which one they want.

“It is a good thing for us as the fans will be engaged and we are looking forward to choosing a new logo.”

Supporters will have the opportunity during the home game against Bradford to cast their vote on which of the four options (right) they feel is best.

Rams media volunteer Tom Coates designed all four of the potential logos and says that the winner will be professionally designed once chosen.

“The four options I have created are a result of about a year’s work of trial and error and consultations with various people,” said Coates.

“All four logos feature a charging ram and the club colours of red, amber and black.

“Two of the options also feature the blue and yellow checks from the coat of arms of Dewsbury, while three feature the year of the club’s establishment.

“The current logo we have was designed in 2009 and first

appeared as part of that season’s kit design, and there are a number of issues with it.

“It does not feature all three club colours, has no representation of the town of Dewsbury, and it does not reflect our history.”

The winning design will be unveiled at the Rams’ presentation night on September 12.
