How This Newall Green Man Once Known As ‘Bulletproof Jack’ Turned His Life Around By the age of 14, Jack Hawksworth had already been sentenced to ten months at a youth offenders’ institute for burglary; at 16 he received another term for robbery and just a year after that his best friend who he grew up with in his Newall Green neighbourhood was murdered.

The incident prompted his mum to buy him a bulletproof vest in fear that he’d be next - which led to him being dubbed by both the locals and Police as ‘Bulletproof Jack’.

Things came to a head when, aged 21, Jack was sentenced to seven years for robbery.

Saint Paul’s Masterchefs!

Students from Saint Paul’s Catholic High School in Wythenshawe have been joining the increasingly popular Cooking Club at the school.

The school sees cooking as a core life skill and their aim is to give everyone the opportunity to learn to cook and enjoy good food.

The Cooking Club aims to give Year 7 and Year 8 students a solid grounding in cookery, allowing them to develop their knowledge and set of skills, discover a passion for food and find the fun and satisfaction in creating a great meal.

The club’s goals are to provide practical food opportunities and to help young people to be aware of the importance of following a healthy diet; have the necessary skills to prepare and cook healthy food; make more informed choices about the type of food and drink they consume; and follow correct food hygiene and safety procedures.

Tony Billings, Executive Headteacher at Saint Paul’s said: “Studies show that children who are welcomed in to the kitchen and are allowed to help prepare and cook food are less fussy and eat more healthily. They’re also more likely to try new foods, and learn about the provenance of food and about waste and how to reduce it,”

Visitors to Wythenshawe Town Centre are now able to keep bang up to date with goings on at their favourite shopping centre thanks to a new digital screen.

Centre manager Jeff Jackson (pictured above, left) unveiled the screen which continues the recent raft of improvements to the facility.

“The idea is to give the customers up to date information on local news, the roads and also what deals the shops are offering” Jeff explained.

“Our tenants are looking forward to getting involved in this next stage of development after we installed free Wi-fi which is proving very popular.” he continued.

The idea could be rolled out to other locations in Wythenshawe town centre in the next 12 months if it is successful.

Amazon Surprise For Newall Green School Pupils at Newall Green Primary School

in Wythenshawe have been handed 25 Kindles and a £2,000 gift card by staff from the nearby Amazon fulfilment centre.

Newall Green Primary was nominated by associates at the Amazon site as part of the company’s Kindle Reading Fund where the team was asked to nominate a local school to receive the donation.

Amazon’s Manchester General Manager, Ashley Cowan, said: “At Amazon we believe the excitement of reading should be shared by everyone – young and old.

“We are committed to helping inspire the young people in our community to develop their literacy skills and we hope the donation of 25 Kindle devices to this fantastic local school will ignite the love of reading amongst pupils.

“Making donations of devices to local schools is a great way for us to give back to the community and to see the children’s faces light up when they opened the boxes was heart-warming for us all.

The intitiave makes up a part of the ‘Amazon in the Community’ programme where by the company supports communities in and around where it operates in the UK. The programme focuses on helping children reach their potential in the digital world by creating a positive environment for children, developing essential skills in literacy and science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) and empowering young people into the right career.

Darts Stars To Feature At Wythenshawe Forum Charity Event There’s a treat in store for Wythenshawe darts fans as eight of the top names in the sport visit the the town’s Forum for a special charity event.

Friday At The Forum sees top names such as current BDO World Champion Glen Durrant and ex World Champ Dennis Priestley play at the event in support of Ashley Cricket Club.

BDO World champ joins household names at the oche Man Attacked And Run Over In Northern Moor Car Park A pub car park was cordoned off after a man

was attacked and run over.

Police were called to Moorcroft Road, Northern Moor to reports of a disturbance.

A 28-year-old man had been walking through The Park pub’s car park when a blue Mazda drove in towards him.

He tried to get away, but another man jumped out of the car and hit him round the back of the head, before the car hit him and fled the scene.

An ambulance was called but the victim left the scene before it arrived.

He later attended hospital and was treated for minor injuries. It’s understood that police originally responded to reports of a ‘shooting’ after seven separate callers phoned in having heard ‘three loud bangs’.

Wythenshawe To Be Part Of £45m Manchester Housing Scheme

Wythenshawe is set to be one of the areas to benefit from a £45 million Manchester Council housing initiative.

Council bosses have now announced that £45m is in the bag for 1,772 homes, to be built up to 2021. Some 41 separate projects across Manchester have been confirmed.

Town hall bosses say more than a third of that cash will be used for houses in Manchester, with £81m for schemes elsewhere across the region.

They will all be built for either shared ownership, rent to buy, or specialist affordable rent.

The Manchester cash will be used for two and threebedroom properties, as well as adapted homes for people with learning disabilities.

New Wythenshawe Base For Growing Software Developer Software development firm fissara has

relocated to a new office in Wythenshawe as it looks to accommodate its growing business.

The company moved its 10-strong team into The Millbrook Business Centre to support the continuing rollout of its field force management software platform – a cloud-based system allowing businesses to manage people, processes, schedules and stocks.

Since its launch, fissara has secured contracts with telecoms giants Motorola and O2, contractor AMCO Engineering and property management firm Scanlans.

Now, fissara is preparing to expand its services in the civil engineering, telecoms, utilities and facilities management markets.

The company was established in 2013

by Jon Holttum and Nick Lawford, who previously worked together developing software for the emergency services at Airwave Solutions.

Jon commented: “We decided to plant our roots firmly in Manchester because it is the UK’s hub for digital technology development.

“We need access to great people who have the right skills and experience to help us achieve the rapid growth we anticipate as we roll out our product nationwide and we believe that those people are to be found right here in Manchester.“ He continued: “fissara is creating real disruption in the operations management market by totally changing the way companies run and buy this type of software.

Wythenshawe Police Counter One Of 10 To Close You are no longer able to report crimes

or problems at ten out of the 22 police stations across Manchester - including Wythenshawe.

Greater Manchester Police have closed the counter at the town’s station - along with Altrincham, Chadderton, Fred Perry House (Stockport council), Horwich, Hyde, Leigh, Middleton, Pendleton and Whitefield.

Eleven of the remaining 12 stations will also see a change of opening hours with only the Manchester city centre enquiry counter remaining unaffected.

Three Year Sentence For Wythenshawe Pub Blackmailer A 36-year-old man who attempted to

blackmail a Wythenshawe pub following a spate of arson attacks has been jailed for three years.

The Firbank Pub and Kitchen in Wythenshawe, was repeatedly firebombed in July, August and September 2015.

Landlord Simon Delaney posted a plea on Facebook offering a £3000 reward for information.

Soon after, a caller to the pub said: ‘I’m nothing to do with what’s going on - but I can make it stop for £5,000..’

Police traced the call to 36-year-old drug dealer Stuart Walsh, who had conspired with three associates in the extortion bid.

Walsh’s Manchester Crown Court sentencing heard there was nothing to link the arson to the blackmailers, who had decided to take advantage of Mr Delaney’s situation.

Last year the Firbank Pub and Kitchen was named ‘Community Pub of the Year’ by the ‘Great British Pub Awards’.

Autographs of six of the Manchester United players who died in the Munich air disaster have been auctioned in aid of St Ann’s Hospice.

The memorabilia has been donated by Ann and Brian Smith who found the piece of paper containing the autographs when they were clearing out the house of a late relative.

The retired couple, from Offerton, are both United supporters and hope the eBay auction will raise funds for St

Passengers will be able to cross the pond in just over 11 hours from May after new direct flights from Manchester Airport were announced.

Immobilise is a free web based property registration service supported by Greater Manchester Police that allows you to register all your belongings, so that if anything goes missing and is recovered, you are more likely to get it back. As a member of the public, if you wish to make your property ownership details viewable to the police you can do so by obtaining a FREE account at Immobilise It works by allowing police officers across the country to tap into a shared database of stolen property.

The more items registered on both the property and stolen item databases, the easier it is to find owners of any recovered property.

Bikes, mobile phones and laptops are just a start of what you could register. You can also store photos of your items.

It allows officers to search for property by serial numbers and photos to identify the registered owners and whether an item is stolen. They can then contact the owner to return stolen goods and investigate any criminal activity relating to the property. Arson Attack On Disused Northern Moor School

Police are investigating an arson attack on a derelict school building.

The suspect smashed through a window at the rear of the former Piper Hill School building, in Yewtree Lane, Northern Moor, in the early hours of Monday morning.

They then lit a fire in a classroom, which spread through the building.

Wythenshawe Works Retains HQN Accreditation 3 Years In A Row

Following a re-assessment in December 2016, Wythenshawe Community Housing Group (WCHG) was proud to retain its HQN accreditation three years in a row.

Following the assessment, HQN considers that WCHG continues to meet the HQN accreditation standards and should retain the awards that they hold.

Some highlights include: • Repairs completed on time have been above target for the majority of the year, with a 99.92% success rate • Customer satisfaction is extremely high at 99.95, which is slightly up on last year’s already strong results • Void turnaround times continue to improve, and show significant improvement over the past three years.

The average relet time, across the year has decreased further to 17.17 days • Gas servicing compliance is still very strong and has remained at 100% throughout the year (and has been at this level for the past two and a half years), and electrical safety (upon which there is significant focus) has increased from last year to 99.96%.

The accreditation report focused on significant good practice changes in the last 12 months and as a result had no formal recommendations for improvement.

Group Chief Executive of Wythenshawe Community Housing Group, Nigel Wilson, said, “It’s great for us and our tenants to know, that despite the challenges of change, our standards of service have remained at the very highest levels of quality that we all expect. It is also very pleasing to note that the effort we have made to ensure we effectively monitor performance at service level and that of individuals has been recognised as a key part of why the standard of service we provide is consistent, efficient and delivers excellent customer satisfaction.”

Wythenshawe Community Housing Group visits the Lord Mayor for commendation Wythenshawe Community Housing Group (WCHG) was honoured to be invited by local Northenden Councillors to visit the Lord Mayor of Manchester Carl AustinBehan, for tea and cakes in his chambers at the Old Town Hall, Albert Square, Manchester.

WCHG was specifically invited to celebrate their community and development work in Wythenshawe. Sarah Woolley Senior Community Investment Manager for WCHG was there also in her capacity for voluntary work for Wythenshawe’s award winning Sarelles Morris dance Troupe which has seen a contribution of 450 volunteer hours in the community and still going strong after 10 years.

The visit highlighted some of the impressive work that is being rolled out by WCHG in Northenden and across Wythenshawe, delivering a range of community initiatives and projects to support this vibrant community to tackle social isolation, improving health and wellbeing and encouraging local people to get back into employment, education or training.

The visit also highlighted WCHG’s impressive track record working in partnership with key agencies and local community voluntary groups to deliver much needed support and strong impact on health and wellbeing.

5th Year Birthday Celebration for Benchill Enterprise Centre

The Lord Mayor of Manchester, Carl Austin-Behan celebrated ‘five years in business’ with Wythenshawe Community Housing Group (WCHG).

The centre has gone from strength-tostrength creating a thriving hub of activity for local small businesses and budding entrepreneurs.

The birthday celebration offered business advice workshops for local people providing networking opportunities for local businesses and current business tenants.

Since being opened by Sir Richard Leese and Paul Goggins MP in October 2011, the Enterprise Centre has provided office space to over 80 businesses, provided business support to more than 250 Wythenshawe entrepreneurs and over 1,000 local people have also been supported by taking up free business advice or training.

The centre provides affordable all-inclusive office space and designated starter units alongside offering free business advice and support, workshops and training programmes for local people.

Lord Mayor of Manchester, Carl AustinBehan said, “The Centre has made a hugely positive impact in changing the lives of local people. The team deserves congratulating for their tireless work supporting local people into employment, and helping transform many ideas into successful enterprise.”

Storm Doris Causes Flight Drama At Manchester Airport

The region was battered by Storm Doris throughout February and some of the most dramatic scenes were, not surprisingly at the local airport.

An EasyJet flight from Geneva had two failed attempts to land at its original destination of Leeds Bradford and eventually had to divert to Manchester where its passengers endured almost as dramatic a landing as gusts of up to 80 mph battered the region.

Many flights were either cancelled or delayed and those that did make it in or out made for scary journeys as Doris tested pilots’ skills to the maximum.

Manchester marks the passing of Sir Gerald Kaufman MP

Tributes to long-serving Manchester MP Sir Gerald Kaufman, who has died aged 86, were marked by Manchester City Council.

The Manchester Town Hall flag was flown at half mast as a mark of respect to Sir Gerald, who had held the distinction of being the longest-serving MP in the House of Commons -known as the Father of the House - since 2015.

He had represented the city in Parliament for 47 years, as MP for Ardwick 1970-1983 and MP for Gorton 1983-2017.

Belle Vue Boost For Speedway Fans Speedway is set to return to the National Speedway Stadium on Kirkmanshulme Lane in time for the newly named 2017 British Speedway Premiership as a new consortia has been agreed to secure the future of the historic Aces club.

Founded by Tony Rice and Robin Southwell, Belle Vue Speedway 2017 Ltd can now be announced as the new owners of the Belle Vue Aces franchise.

The British Speedway Promoters Association (BSPA), who have control over speedway promoters’ licences across the UK, have confirmed their decision following consultation with Manchester City Council.

The franchise will take control of the club from today (24 February 2017) and will occupy the National Speedway Stadium at the Belle Vue Sports Village.

Bringing significant commercial experience to the venture, Club owners Tony Rice and Robin Southwell have strong business links to Manchester and have the desire to develop a long-term and sustainable future for the Club in Manchester and to promote the National Speedway Stadium as a world class venue for Speedway activity in the country.

Sir Richard Leese, Leader of Manchester City Council, said: “Belle Vue Aces is one of the Manchester’s most historic sporting clubs and to be able to confirm their continued tenure at the National Speedway Stadium will be welcome news to their fans.”

As part of the CBRE all schools programme for Rugby Union,Newall Green High school were invited to attend a day to design are own unique kit for the school, this was an opportunity not to be missed.

Three year 10 Boys, Jack Yabsley, Mason Curran and Ben Lewis (pictured above) were selected to attend the day.

The event was a huge success as the pupils thrived and produced a stunning and eye catching rugby kit, which has incorporated the values and beliefs of Newall Green High School.

This kit will now be worn and shown off at rugby events and competitions by both boys and girls at the school.

Suspected Drink Driver Held After Taxi Driver Hospitalised In Wythenshawe Collision

A suspected drink driver tried to flee the scene of an accident after his Audi collided with a taxi leaving the driver with back and neck injuries.

Police and emergency services were called to Altrincham Road in Wythenshawe after reports of a collision in the early hours of February 25.

It’s understood the road was shut off while crews worked to free the taxi driver from his Toyota Prius using cutting equipment.

He was taken to hospital by ambulance with neck and back injuries which are not believed to be lifethreatening.

It’s understood his passenger escaped unhurt.

The paramedics said the Audi has come from Hall Lane and hit the taxi before ending up in the grass.

They added that the taxi driver could’ve been fatally injured had he just been half a metre further into his journey.

A Police spokesman said: “We were called to Altrincham Road in Wythenshawe just before 5am this morning to reports of a collision involving a Toyota Prius and an Audi.

“The driver of the Audi, a 32-yeaar-old man, fled the scene and following a short chase on foot was arrested on suspicion of drink driving, dangerous driving and assaulting a police officer.

“The driver of the taxi was cut free from the vehicle by fire crews and taken to hospital by ambulance with suspected neck and back injuries.”

Manchester To Be New Capital of England?

Some might argue that musically and culturally it already is, but now there are genuine calls for

Manchester to be the next capital of England.

Economist journalists reckon making Manchester the country’s capital would ‘change British politics for the better’, making it more affordable and accessible.

They say the move would ‘drive urban integration’, raise productivity and boost living standards.

For years Birmingham has been known as ‘the second city’, considered ‘next in line’ to being the capital of England after London.

But now, Manchester seems to have jumped the queue.

An article in The Economist Magazine says Manchester could be the perfect counterbalance to London, capable of attracting government staff, the media, think tanks, investors and business leaders.

The magazine’s Bagehot column reads: “Manchester clearly has the edge. Its position as Britain’s de-facto second city is well-established.

“Its infrastructure is better than that of Birmingham, it has more space to grow, its airport already has twice the traffic and twice the number of international connections.”

The Manchester Central Convention Complex is suggested as the place to house the two houses of Parliament, with nearby rundown mills and warehouses perfect for offices for MPs and government departments.

Wythenshawe Community Housing Group (WCHG) is campaigning for Greater Manchester’s first ever Metro Mayor to prioritise housing and deliver the affordable homes local people have said their area desperately needs.

WCHG is partnering the National Housing Federation to push housing to the top of the political agenda ahead of the mayoral election on Thursday 4 May. New research has identified housing as a top priority for voters in Greater Manchester, where there has also been a distinct move away from traditional NIMBY attitudes towards housebuilding.

40% of voters in the city region believe the new mayor should prioritise plans for new housing in the first 100 days of office, while the National Housing Federation has found that public support for more affordable homes in the North West is now as strong as in London.

Greater Manchester’s new mayor will assume new powers relating to housing, planning and infrastructure. He or she will also have the chance to champion housing policy and seek further devolution of funding and flexibilities from central Government.

The public campaign, which launched today, is being run by the National Housing Federation and the Greater Manchester Housing Providers (GMHP).

It will call on all six mayoral candidates to sign up and pledge their support for everyone across Greater Manchester to live in a home they can afford. The need for affordable housing in Wythenshawe has never been greater.

Group Chief Executive Nigel Wilson said,”We are calling on all six mayoral candidates and local politicians to commit to working with us and our sector to tackle the area’s around the housing crisis and deliver the homes this area needs.”

Wythenshawe Community Housing Group (WCHG) was formed in April 2013, providing over 14,000 affordable quality homes to over

20,000 people. As a responsible housing provider we are committed to tackling the national housing crisis by developing 690 new homes with an investment of £86m.

These new affordable, quality homes are much more than just bricks and mortar they will provide the building blocks to leaving a lasting sustainable legacy for the Wythenshawe community.

‘Guard Of Honour’ Tribute For Local Golf Craftsman

The family of a former local professional golfer requested that he be honoured by a golfing guard of honour at his funeral.

Terry Gilbert, a former professional at Sale Golf Club , passed away aged 69 after suffering from pancreatic cancer.

Golfers were asked to bring an iron or driver with them to his funeral to form a guard of honour with clubs as his coffin is brought into the service.

Mr Gilbert was one of the few craftsmen remaining able to customise golf clubs, and was well known around the Manchester area.

He ran shops offering golf club repairs and fitting in Sale, Northenden, Stockport and Carrington.

His career as a professional golfer started at Altrincham Golf Course, and he gained experience in club making when he was made assistant professional at Ringway Golf Club.

His daughter Deborah Lawson said: “Despite the serious nature of his cancer he showed the most incredible positivity, bravery and courage throughout.

“He built a large following of golfers and pros who trusted his expertise and knowledge in his premises in Sale, Northenden, Stockport and Carrington.

Sharston Stagecoach Employees Receive Long Service Awards

Employees at a company have been rewarded for loyal service totalling 265 years.

Eight staff at Stagecoach were recognised including Director Peter Sumner and driver John Ward who both clocked up an impressive 45 years of service with the company. Colin Williamson, also a driver, was recognised for 40 years of service. Stagecoach Manchester bus drivers Ronald McAdam and Joseph Smith were thanked for 30 years of service and fellow drivers Simon Bell, Eric Lane and Desmond Young were each commended for 25 years of work.
