2012 SECONDARY CATALOGUE

If you thought learning was confined to the classroom, think again. If you assumed it was always found in a book, open your mind. It’s not simply the business of childhood, nor is it the property of intellectuals or institutions. It’s living and breathing in every one of us.

For decades, Pearson has addressed the needs of educational institutions, teachers, and learners across the English-speaking Caribbean. From print-based publishing and the development of digital resources for schools and universities, to academic services, we actively meet local Caribbean curriculum requirements through dedicated resources, as well as serve those following UK and US curriculums. At Pearson, the “always learning” mentality ensures a constantly evolving portfolio of solutions for teachers and learners from early childhood through to CSEC® and CAPE®, higher education, and adult education. Facilitating the use of our resources and services in the Caribbean, we rely on an articulated team of sales and marketing professionals distributed across the breadth of the region.

Brands and companies you can trust Pearson brings together some of the world’s leading educational companies and brands with a proven track record of success. • Longman, Heinemann, Scott Foresman, Addison Wesley and Prentice Hall are recognised worldwide for the excellence of their resources and content. • Edexcel qualifications are used in over 100 countries including Trinidad and the Cayman Islands – they are leaders in vocational and technical education and are the UK’s largest awarding body. • Our technology companies such as Pearson Learning, Fronter and Phoenix are at the forefront of educational technology. • Pearson Assessment provides a complete range of assessment services, with Pearson Vue specialising in the delivery of innovative computer based testing.

SECONDARY Kathryn Bacchus, Form Teacher to 1C at Trinity College East nominated the class for its extreme generosity and compassion when a peer was in need, an act which has led to the establishment of a ‘needy-fund’ which is to be used in the case of students whose families are going through financial binds. Kathryn added: “The students were humbled by the opportunity to participate in this regional competition and their message remains the same: Charity may begin at home but it continues and follows one through life once there are good intentions. This experience has given them the confidence to continue being charitable to others which ties in with Trinity College East’s school motto, Selflessly Serving Our Community.”

Academic qualifications From primary school level through to A-Level courses, we are proud to offer the widest range of internationallyrecognised academic qualifications that help learners around the world achieve their full potential. Whether our learners wish to further their studies at some of the world’s best universities or begin their career with a top employer, our qualifications are welcomed across the world. Our broad range of Edexcel Academic qualifications provide challenging learning experiences that are flexible and straightforward to teach. We understand that clear, detailed and inspiring specifications are only half the picture when you’re introducing a new course. That’s why we’ve developed an array of extra support services to help you implement our academic qualifications, such as Schemes of Work, Sample Assessments, Teacher Support Materials, Mark Schemes, as well as a vast suite of published resources from Pearson. Visit www.edexcel.com/caribbean to find out more.

4

Vocational qualifications Students’ success will depend on the extent to which they are engaged in, and motivated by, the qualifications they study. It is therefore vital that you help your students choose the right combination of qualifications to set them on the most appropriate pathway. Our wide range of BTECs gives students the opportunity to improve their skills and academic success, helping them to achieve their education and career aspirations. They do this by engaging and inspiring students through a unique blend of specialist, work-related learning, and in-depth subject theory that caters for all styles of learning. Through a unique combination of academic and practical learning, BTECs give people the specialist skills and knowledge they need to succeed and progress to higher education and employment. (BTEC Nationals and Higher Nationals are recognised by universities across the world.) Results have proven that students studying BTECs do even better in their academic subjects, and the practical approach is something businesses are requesting more and more. They can be taken alongside, or in place of, academic qualifications as they are equivalent to International GCSEs, GCSEs and GCE A Levels. Visit www.edexcel.com/caribbean to find out more.

DICTIONARIES

8 reasons for

choosing a Longman dictionary 1 Natural English guaranteed All Longman dictionaries are compiled using the Longman Corpus Network – a huge database of 430 million words of spoken and written English – collected from both British and American English sources.

2 spoken / written ... what’s the difference? The Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English is the only advanced learner’s dictionary that explains differences in frequency between spoken and written English, helping students to use English more naturally.

“Does frequency matter? Well, yes it matters a lot. This information is gold dust for the language learner. LDOCE shows in graphic and immediate form which words are really worth learning and knowing how to use.” Jeremy Harmer, ELT Author, Teacher Trainer

3 easy to use – easy to understand To ensure that students of English can easily understand the definitions, Longman dictionaries are written using a limited vocabulary of just 2000 words - the Longman Defining Vocabulary. This means that all dictionaries - from low to advanced levels - contain clear and understandable definitions.

4 CD-ROMs that educate and motivate Longman dictionary CD-ROMs and DVD-ROMs contain more than just the contents of the print dictionary. Students can improve their pronunciation by listening to words and examples, recording their own version and then comparing it with the original native-speaker pronunciation. Interactive exercises, photos and games, help students to build their vocabulary in fun and motivating ways, with specific practice for exams too.

DICTIONARIES 5 Building vocabulary for life Longman Vocabulary Trainers are the most effective way to learn and remember vocabulary. This innovative software accompanies many of the dictionaries, helping learners to build their vocabulary in a systematic and engaging way. All aspects of a word - including meaning, grammar, collocation and usage - are tested until the vocabulary is well and truly mastered. And even then, regular prompts remind learners to review that same vocabulary so that it is never forgotten.

6 free online ACCESS When you buy the Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English 5th edition or the Longman Active Study Dictionary 5th edition, you get FREE access for one year to: www.longmandictionariesonline.com Updated every 3 months, it ensures that you and your students always have access to the very latest vocabulary, practice materials and class worksheets.

7 out and about? mobile apps too Do you have an iPhone, iPad, Blackberry or Android phone? Make sure you equip your mobile with a Longman dictionary that’s right for you.

“The best dictionary. It is a wonderful app... you really can learn English using this tool.” Written by Juan Ca V from Colombia about Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English - 5th Edition (Apple App Store)

8 perfect partners Longman dictionaries are perfectly matched to our courses. Check the level reference for each course and dictionary so that you know exactly which one is right for your students.
