The Business and Economics suite of qualifications covers everything from Accounting to Applied Business, to develop a thorough understanding of the major elements of commercial and economic activity. AT A GLANCE GCE Edexcel GCE Advanced level and Advanced Subsidiary specifications are challenging and modern academic qualifications, aimed at learners aged 16-years-plus wishing to progress to higher education. Available in a wide range of subjects, Edexcel GCE A levels are recognised and valued by some of the world’s top universities, including Oxford, Cambridge and Harvard. Edexcel GCE AS qualifications are equivalent to half of a GCE A level and take one year to complete. Learners can continue studying for another year, after which they can gain a full Edexcel GCE A level. Many international learners take up to five Edexcel GCE A levels instead of, or alongside their national qualifications.

GCSE The General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE) is a qualification aimed at learners aged 14-years-plus and is available in nearly 40 subjects. This is a UK-specific qualification which sits on the UK Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF) and is therefore aimed at schools who are familiar with UK requirements. Assessment is usually modular and takes two years, with a combination of controlled assessment and examination determining the final grade. Although GCSE is an academic qualification, it prepares learners for both vocational and academic study at UK QCF Level 3.

International GCSE International General Certificate of Secondary Education (International GCSE) is a qualification aimed at learners aged 14-years-plus and is available in 40 subjects. This qualification is specifically designed for international learners and is recognised by education institutions across the world. Renowned for its rigour, the International GCSE is based on a linear structure: assessment is via examination after two years of study. Although the qualifications are academic, International GCSE prepares learners for both vocational and academic study at UK QCF Level 3. The qualification gives teachers the opportunity to localise content where appropriate, making lessons more relevant and engaging for learners.

Overview: Our GCE Accounting specification is designed to give students a good knowledge and understanding of the principles and concepts of accounting. It is a worthwhile course for those who will end their study at this level, as well as laying a foundation for the future study of occupational qualifications such as the Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT) Foundation, Intermediate and Technician levels. This syllabus is only available to international centres. Content: The Accounting System and Costing; Corporate and Management Accounting. Assessment: Each unit is externally assessed by a 3-hour examination.

Overview: Modelled on our successful pilot, this innovative and exciting GCSE in Business offers a different approach to delivering Business Studies. It uses an enterprise and skills approach. You can choose from specialised units for three of the pathways: Business Studies, Business Communications, and Business Studies and Economics. Resources are available to support your delivery. Content: Introduction to Small Business; Investigating Small Business; Building a Business; Business Communications; Introduction to Economic Understanding. Assessment: All units are assessed externally through examination papers, apart from Investigating Small Business. This is assessed internally under controlled conditions.

International GCSE Overview: Our Accounting International GCSE aims to develop an understanding of the nature and purpose of accounting in business and non-profit-making organisations, and how it can aid business decision-making. Suitable for delivery in schools and colleges, it is a single-tier qualification assessed by one exam, graded A* to G. Content: Trading Accounts; Profit and Loss; Incomplete Records; Non-profit-making Organisations; Adjustments; Manufacturing Accounts; Partnerships; Analysis and Interpretation of Accounts. Assessment: This qualification is assessed through a two-and-a-half hour examination paper, set and marked by Edexcel.

Overview: Our International GCSE in Business Studies is designed to develop a sound understanding of business terminology, concepts and methods as well as the ability to use knowledge, skills and understanding appropriately in the context of international markets and the United Kingdom. It is a single-tier qualification, suitable for delivery in schools and colleges, which is assessed via a single exam, graded A* to G. Content: Business Activity and the Changing Environment; Human Resources; Accounting and Finance; Marketing; Production. Assessment: This qualification is assessed through a two-hour examination set and marked by Edexcel.

Overview: Edexcel’s GCE in Applied Business provides a broad educational basis for further training and is designed to be delivered in a work-related context to allow learners to develop an understanding of the business sector. Content: Investigating Business; Investigating People at Work; Investigating Promotion; Marketing; Electronic Business; Customer Service; Business Development; Managing and Developing People; Impact of Finance on Business Decisions; International Dimensions of Business; Marketing Decisions. GCSE Overview: Designed to encourage and reward independent learning, Edexcel’s GCSE in Business (Double Award) is a workrelated qualification equivalent to two GCSEs. Students now have the flexibility to do a single GCSE should they choose to complete only two units. Content: Investigating How Business Works; Financial Records; Investigating People; Business and Change; Financial Planning and Forecasting. Assessment: Units 1 and 3 are assessed internally, while Units 2 and 4 are each externally assessed through a one-hour paper.

Overview: Our International GCSE in Commerce aims to develop knowledge and understanding of the nature and purpose of commercial activities and commercial institutions. The importance of innovation and change is explored, and there is an emphasis on the development of numeracy, literacy, enquiry, presentation and interpretation skills. This single-tier qualification is suitable for delivery in schools and colleges and is assessed via a single exam based on real commercial situations. It is graded A* to G. Content: Production and Commercial Activity; Trade; Consumer Credit and Protection; Business Ownership; Aids to Trade. Assessment: This qualification is assessed through a two-hour examination paper, set and marked by Edexcel.

Overview: Our GCE Economics specification aims to develop students’ interest in, and enthusiasm for, the study of Economics. Students will learn to appreciate how Economics contributes to an understanding of the wider economic and social environment, and they will develop the skills, qualities and attitudes which will help to equip them for the challenges, opportunities and responsibilities of working life. Content: Competitive Markets – How they work and why they fail; Managing the Economy; Business Economics and Economic Efficiency; The Global Economy. Assessment: All units are externally assessed through examination.

Students will gain a sound understanding of economics and the ability to use their knowledge, skills and understanding appropriately in the context of individual countries and the global economy. They will learn to interpret and evaluate economic data in order to make reasoned arguments and informed judgements, and will be able to participate effectively in society as citizens, producers and consumers. The Creative Arts sector in the Academic portfolio includes subjects such as Graphic Design, Photography, Fine Art, Drama, Music and Music Technology, Media and the full range of Performing Arts. Applied GCEs are available in the following subjects: Applied Art and Design, Applied Business, Engineering, Health and Social Care, Travel and Tourism, Applied ICT, Media, Performing Arts and Leisure Studies.

International GCSE

Overview: Developed to meet the needs and expectations of centres, this exciting specification allows the flexible combination of a full range of endorsements, which focus on art and design practice, and the integration of theoretical knowledge and understanding. The unit content and assessment are appropriate and accessible to a range of levels of experience and ability. Content: This award can be studied under seven different subject options – Art, Craft and Design; Fine Art; 3D Design; Textile Design; Photography: Light and Lens-based Media; Graphic Communication; Critical and Contextual Studies. Each option consists of four units. Assessment: The AS year consists of two units - a coursework unit which is internally assessed plus an externally moderated unit consisting of an externally set paper that is also internally assessed. Two further units, following the same format as the AS, are taken to complete the full GCE A Level.

Overview: Our International GCSE in Art and Design aims to develop creative, imaginative and practical skills for communicating and expressing ideas, emotions and meanings in art, craft and design. It provides a choice of four different endorsements – Fine Art, Graphic Design, Photography and Textiles – and also allows learners to study local artists and designers. Suitable for delivery in schools and colleges, it is assessed via a single practical external examination and is graded A* to G. Content: Fine Art – Painting, Drawing, Printmaking, Sculpture; Graphic Design – Advertising, Illustration, Packaging;,Typography, Printmaking; Photography – the History and Techniques of Photography; Textiles – Constructed textiles; Dyed textiles, Printed textiles, Woven textiles. Assessment: 10 hour examination, externally assessed.

Overview: Edexcel’s GCE in Applied Art and Design is a vocational qualification designed to give students an understanding of art and design methods and principles and explore working methods linked to industry practice. Learners will develop their practical skills, techniques and processes to a standard that allows progression to further study or training. Content: 2D and 3D Visual Language; Materials, Techniques and Processes; Visual Communication and Meaning, Working in 2D; Working in 3D; Fine Art; Design; Multimedia. Assessment: All units are internally assessed except for three units relating to students’ own original work.

Overview: Our exciting new GCSE Art and Design specification has been developed to meet the needs and expectations of centres. It allows the flexible combination of a full range of endorsements which focus on art and design practice, and the integration of theoretical knowledge and understanding. The unit content and assessment are appropriate and accessible to a range of levels of experience and ability. Continuity with the GCSE from 2001 allows the use of existing resources and an increased recognition of new media. Content: This breaks down into five further subject options – Fine Art; 3D Design; Textile Design; Photography: Lens and Light-based Media and Graphic Communications. Assessment: Each award is assessed on two units: 1. Portfolio: Internally assessed – externally moderated. 2. External task: Internally assessed – externally moderated.

Overview: Our Drama GCSE is designed to encourage students to work imaginatively and creatively in a collaborative context. The popular three-unit structure has been maintained, two units internally assessed and one externally assessed. The free choice of stimulus material and play texts allows greater flexibility or teachers, and the final examination is performance-based, rather than written, to reward practical ability. Content: Drama Exploration; Exploring Play Texts; Drama Performance. Assessment: Drama Exploration and Exploring Play Texts are both assessed internally under controlled conditions. Drama Performance is externally assessed.

Overview: Our GCE Drama and Theatre Studies specification is designed to provide a balance across a range of learning activities. It combines the activities of exploring plays, creating theatre, the performing of plays, the analysis of theatre and the critical evaluation of all of these elements. Students completing the course successfully will hone their analytical and creative skills, have a thorough understanding of drama and theatre and an ability to communicate effectively with others. Content: Exploration of Drama and Theatre; Theatre Text in Performance; Exploration of Dramatic Performance; Theatre Text in Context. Assessment: Units 1 and 3 are internally assessed; Units 2 and 4 externally assessed.

Overview: Our GCE in Media: Communication and Production is designed to provide centres with a flexible qualification in Media Production. Through ways of working that emphasise independence and self-directed learning, students develop the practical media skills, techniques and processes relevant to a work-related, clientorientated context. They will gain an understanding of media products, services and audiences and an insight into the working practices of, and constraints on, professionals working in the media industries. Content: Industries; Texts and Audiences; Skills for Media Production; Media Production Brief; Research and Development for Media Production; Media Production Project; Professional Practice in Media Industries. Assessment: All units internally assessed, other than 3 and 6 which are externally marked.

Overview: Our GCE Music course is designed to be stimulating and enriching for students and teachers alike, providing an excellent basis for lifelong learning and for higher education courses in music. At both Advanced Subsidiary (AS) and A2 levels, students experience all three main musical disciplines of performing, composing, and listening and understanding. Content: Performing Music; Composing; Developing Musical Understanding; Extended Performance; Composition and Technical Study; Further Musical Understanding. Assessment: All externally assessed apart from Units 1 and 4 which are internally assessed and externally moderated. Units 3 and 6 assessed are by two-hour examination.

GCSE Overview: Our new Music GCSE continues the philosophy of the current specification. It is flexible and encourages the use of diverse approaches in teaching music, which will appeal to students. Offering a broad range of areas of study, the GCSE in Music will widen students’ engagement with the subject as a whole Content: Performing Music; Composing Music; Music – Listening and Appraising. Assessment: Performing Music and Composing Music are internally assessed. Music – Listening and Appraising is assessed by an externally marked 90-minute examination.

Applied GCE

Overview: Our GCE Music Technology specification involves frequent practical work and encourages the cultivation of a wide range of skills. Students will have the opportunity to sequence MIDI and audio, record live instruments, produce CDs and compose using music technology. They will also build an understanding of the technical processes and principles that underpin effective use of music technology, and comment on it in writing. Principle Units: Music Technology Portfolio 1; Listening and Analysing; Music Technology Portfolio 2; Analysing and Producing. Assessment: Both portfolios are work presented in the form of an audio CD. The other two units are end-of-year examinations. All units are externally assessed.

Overview: Our Applied GCE in Performing Arts embraces all the major performance forms and skills, including dance, theatre, music and design. Centres may choose to offer all of these forms or to focus on only one or two. Assessment is wholly based on a practical approach to performance skills, allowing students the freedom to follow their own performance interests and the opportunity to develop their skills. Content: Developing Skills for Performance; Planning for a Creative Event; Performing to a Commission; Employment Opportunities in the Performing Arts; Advanced Performance Practice; Advanced Production Practice; Production Delivery. Assessment: All units are externally assessed except for units 3 and 7.

Design and Technology Edexcel’s range of Design and Technology qualifications provide a stimulating and broad array of options covering many of the creative manufacturing disciplines. They all combine knowledge and understanding with opportunities for students to demonstrate practical skill. Overview: Our GCSE in Statistics offers a flexible and straightforward specification, with controlled assessment instead of coursework and only one externally assessed paper.
