The concepts and skills assessed by each level of Stanford 10 are those ordinarily taught during the second half of any given year and the first half of the following year. This midyear-to-midyear configuration—with students tested in the spring of one grade and the fall of the next—provides a more focused assessment and greater opportunity to monitor academic growth. At the high school levels, where the TASK levels assess basic skills, a single level is appropriate for use in both the fall and spring of the same school year.

Here are some reasons to have norm-referenced tests (NRTs) in your toolbox:

CONTENT AREA Reading The Reading subtests measure a broad spectrum of essential reading components and are aligned with IRA/NCTE standards, state standards, and the National Assessment of Education Progress (NAEP). Reflecting a balanced, developmental curriculum and sound instructional practices, these subtests assess the following areas at appropriate grade levels: phonemic awareness, decoding, phonics, vocabulary, and comprehension. Stanford 10 places an emphasis on assessing foundation skills that are critical to early literacy. The Sounds and Letters subtest closely reflects reading research findings on the importance of phonemic awareness and phonics. Word Study Skills and Sentence Reading are evaluated across a broader grade range than in previous editions. This assessment of literacy development in the early grades helps ensure that students are progressing at every stage on the road to literacy. Reading Comprehension Subtest The Stanford 10 Reading Comprehension subtest is based on research about the contexts and activities that are most effective for reading instruction and assessment. The Stanford 10 framework involves three major purposes for reading (literary, informational, and functional) and multiple modes of comprehension (initial understanding, interpretation, critical analysis, and awareness and usage of reading strategies). Authentic reading selections commissioned from published authors of children’s and young people’s literature help create a level playing field for all students and reflect diverse multicultural themes to appeal to students of varying backgrounds, experiential levels, and interests. Students who take the full-length Reading Comprehension subtest at Primary 1–TASK 3 levels can receive a Lexile ® score. The Lexile Framework defines and sequences reading materials in terms of difficulty and allows you to identify customized reading lists for students based on their reading achievement. For information about the use of Lexiles, see PearsonLexile.com.

• Local assessments can complement the state assessment. • National norms compare individual student, building, and district performance with the nation as a whole. Not only is this unique information, but also National Percentile Ranks are broadly understood scores. • NRTs efficiently cover five measures in one test— reading, math, science, social studies, and language. • With NRTs, it is possible to monitor growth over time, providing convincing evidence of improvement by following the progress of students from year to year.

Authentic Reading Selections Stanford 10 is the only standardized achievement test to provide reading selections written expressly for an assessment by authors of children’s and young people’s literature. These authentic selections create a level playing field for all students, and they include a variety of topics and diverse cultural themes that will appeal to students of varying backgrounds, experiential levels, and interests.

Mathematics The Mathematics subtests align with the NAEP and measure concepts and processes based on the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics Principles and Standards for School Mathematics (PSSM) and state standards. Concepts assessed include number sense and operations; patterns, relationships, and algebra; geometry and measurement; and data, statistics, and probability. Questions also evaluate processes in computation and representation; estimation; mathematical connections; and reasoning and problem solving. To enhance test interpretation, the subtests provide consistency in names of content clusters across levels. Mathematics Problem Solving measures the skills and knowledge necessary to solve problems in mathematics. Mathematics Procedures measures the ability to apply the rules and methods of arithmetic to problems that require arithmetic solutions. Both standard and metric rulers are used in the Mathematics Problem Solving and Mathematics subtests for the Primary 1–TASK levels. A mathematics reference sheet that provides the formulas necessary to solve problems is included for the Advanced and TASK levels. Calculator use is an option in the Mathematics Problem Solving subtest beginning at the Intermediate 1 level and in the Mathematics subtest at the TASK levels.

Language Aligned with IRA/NCTE standards and state standards, the Stanford 10 Language subtest measures students’ achievement in applying the principles that form effective writing. From word- and sentence-level skills to whole composition features, the subtest engages students in real-life activities. Stanford 10 offers a choice of Language subtests to suit different language arts instructional approaches. The Traditional Language subtest (Form A) measures proficiency in mechanics and expression in three different sections. The first section measures language mechanics (capitalization, punctuation, and usage) with questions that resemble an actual editing task with a variety of embedded errors. The second section assesses language expression as students demonstrate their understanding of sentence structure. The third section provides language expression items that include objectives typically evaluated in the direct assessment of writing. An alternative Comprehensive Language subtest (Form D) provides an integrated test that replicates the writing process as closely as possible in a testing situation. This subtest measures pre-writing, composing, and editing in a holistic fashion that resembles authentic writing tasks.

Spelling The Spelling subtest assesses objectives based on the phonetic and structural principles taught at each grade level. At Primary 1, the subtest is dictated and students choose from three options. Beginning at the Primary 2 level, the spelling items reflect real-life editing tasks because they are presented in context rather than as isolated words. Each spelling item consists of one sentence with three underlined words. Starting at Primary 3, an additional “No Mistake” option is offered, reinforcing the authenticity of the task. The misspellings used reflect students’ most common spelling errors.

S ta nfor d 10 : C O N T E N T A R E A Listening Comprehension Stanford 10 helps assess both listening vocabulary and comprehension at K–Grade 9 levels in recognition of the importance of listening skills in literacy development, instruction, and everyday life. The Listening subtests emphasize listening strategies and provide a wide variety of selections that includes multicultural representation. In the Listening Vocabulary section, students demonstrate recognition of the common meanings of spoken words encountered in various types of activities. The Listening Comprehension section uses dictated selections and questions that reflect the listening materials students hear in school and outside of the classroom. This section parallels the Reading Comprehension subtest, using literary, informational, and functional texts to measure the same modes of comprehension: initial understanding, interpretation, and critical analysis and strategies.

Science The Science subtest assesses students’ understanding of the life, physical, and earth sciences, and the nature of science with questions that elicit problem solving and inquiry using a basic understanding of science. Reflecting current science practice and research, this subtest aligns with the National Science Education Standards (National Research Council), the Benchmarks for Science Literacy (American Association for the Advancement of Science), and state standards. Students must use reasoning skills throughout the subtest to reach answers. These skills include estimating, making simple calculations, seeking patterns, making observations, recognizing cause and effect, reading standard instruments, and drawing conclusions. Students are challenged to apply foundation concepts and skills as they think through questions.

Social Science The Social Science subtest measures the concepts important for the development of citizenship and strongly emphasizes critical thinking skills. Giving equal attention to history, geography, political science, and economics, the subtest maintains a balance between national and international issues. It reflects current social studies standards, practices, and research and is aligned with the National Council for the Social Studies (NCSS) Curriculum Standards for Social Studies and state standards. Using the National Standards for History as a guideline, the history questions focus on the history of the United States, Western civilization, and non-Western people and societies who share our interdependent world. Geography questions, which are based on the Geography for Life: National Geography Standards, cover the themes of location, places, human-environment interaction, movement, and region. The political science component helps assess students’ basic understanding of the U.S. system of government as outlined in the National Standards for Civics and Government. The economics questions are based on the Voluntary National Content Standards in Economics.

S ta nfor d 10 : S C O R E R E P O R T S Stanford Scale allows you to monitor student grow th The Stanford Scale expresses student performance across all test levels of a subtest or total score. For example, the Reading Comprehension subtest is linked across 11 test levels (Primary 1– TASK 3), forming one continuous scale that makes it possible to compare scores from test level to test level. This scale is especially helpful for comparing student performance in a particular subject area over time. The Stanford Scale offers an objective, consistent tool to monitor student achievement across years and multiple assessments. Many of our tests are linked to this scale. From broad-based assessment to classroom diagnostic evaluation, teachers and administrators can relate student performance to a common metric and monitor students’ educational development.

scoring & reporting services Stanford 10 helps educators make data-driven decisions. A range of user-friendly score reports, designed with the input of administrators and teachers across the country, supports teaching, learning, and accountability requirements. The reports include narrative summaries, process and cluster summaries, and graphic displays to clarify the student’s performance and guide planning and analysis. (See pp. 21–24 for sample score reports.) Administrators obtain critical data to document and monitor the progress of all children and to disaggregate results according to federal mandates. Teachers receive specific information to support instructional planning for individual students and the class as well as to improve their teaching. Parents better understand their child’s achievement level and get

Measure students’ writing through a direct assessment. The Stanford Writing Assessment Program, Third Edition, when used in conjunction with other Stanford Achievement Test Series subtests, such as Spelling and Language, provides a comprehensive picture of students’ proficiency with the mechanics of writing and their ability to communicate effectively in writing. Features & Benefits The Stanford Writing Assessment Program helps you to: n Obtain a direct measure of writing to complement indirect measures obtained through

multiple-choice assessments n Effectively measure student progress toward writing program objectives n Establish an effective writing program at the school or classroom level n Determine instructional needs for individual students and develop students’ writing proficiency n Survey all or part of the student population, annually or at other intervals; i.e., grade levels not

assessed by state accountability tests

CONTENT AREA The four modes or categories of writing this program addresses are: Descriptive, Narrative, Expository, and Persuasive. Students are presented with a written prompt designed to elicit a writing sample in the specified mode. Prompts at all levels are dictated by the teacher to ensure that students’ reading ability does not interfere with their responses.

Scoring & Reporting Services The student’s response is scored holistically. Holistic scoring relies on the judgments of two raters for each paper. Ratings are based on a six-point scale. The student’s raw score is the sum of the two holistic ratings, yielding possible raw scores from 2 to 12. Analytic scoring is also available via Pearson Scoring and Reporting Services. A single reading is used for scoring achievement in each of six analytic categories on a 4-point scale. The six analytic categories are: n Ideas and Development

n Sentences and Paragraphs

n Organization, Unity, and Coherence

n Grammar and Usage

n Word Choice

n Mechanics

TEST LEVELS Twelve test levels with questions unique to each level provide more accurate assessment across the grades. At the elementary, middle, and junior high school levels, the concepts and skills assessed are those ordinarily taught during the second half of any given year and the first half of the following year. This midyear-to-midyear configuration—with students tested in the spring of one grade and the fall of the next—provides a more focused assessment and greater opportunity to monitor academic growth. At the high school levels, where the Avanzado 1 and 2 levels assess basic skills, a single level is appropriate for use in spring of the same school year and fall of the next year.

Successful Interventions Using Aprenda 3 Results

Alicia, a 10th grader, recently moved to the United States from Puerto Rico. She wants to study chemistry in college, but has difficulty reading and writing English. Last semester, Alicia took both Aprenda 3 and Stanford 10. Aprenda 3 is the only Spanish achievement test that assesses science (and social science), and Alicia scored much higher in science on Aprenda 3 than Stanford 10. Her scores indicated that she was struggling with the English language, but not with content and concepts, so her teachers created instructional interventions to help her keep pace with her classmates. Trust Aprenda 3 to find out what your Spanish-speaking students truly know.

CONTENT AREA LECTUR A /READING The Reading subtests are designed to mirror the developmental, process-oriented nature of good reading instruction and the kinds of instructional materials used in exemplary programs. They align with IRA/NCTE standards, state standards, and the National Assessment of Education Progress (NAEP), with an emphasis on a balanced reading curriculum that includes phonemic awareness, decoding, phonics, vocabulary, and comprehension, at appropriate grade levels. The Reading Comprehension subtest helps assess initial understanding, interpretation, critical analysis, and reading strategies, addressing three major purposes for reading by using literary, informational, and functional texts. Open-ended assessments are also available. Authentic reading selections commissioned from published authors and illustrators of Spanish children’s literature help create a level playing field for all students and reflect diverse multicultural themes to appeal to students of varying Hispanic backgrounds, experiential levels, and interests. A Lexile® measure for Grades 2–12 is included. The Lexile Framework defines and sequences reading materials in terms of difficulty and allows you to identify customized reading lists for students based on their reading achievement. For information about the use of Lexiles, please visit PearsonLexile.com. To search for Spanish books, please visit Lexile.com/fab/spanish

Matemáticas/Mathematics The Mathematics subtests assess student proficiency in the fundamental concepts and processes of problem solving, in keeping with the NCTM Principles and Standards for School Mathematics (2000). Some items call for careful analysis, synthesis of information, attention to detail, and the selection and use of appropriate strategies. Some items distinguish between mathematical concepts and mathematical vocabulary by requiring students to use thinking skills to respond. Many items are contextualized so that students can relate to them and become engaged in the test. Reading included in the mathematics items is on or below grade level to help ensure that students’ reading ability will not affect their performance. Open-ended assessments are also available for more insight. Both standard and metric rulers are used in the Mathematics Problem Solving and Mathematics subtests for the Primario 1–Avanzado 2 levels. Mathematics formula sheets that provide the formulas necessary to solve problems are included for the Intermedio 4–Avanzado 2 levels. Calculator use is an option in the Mathematics Problem Solving subtest beginning at the Intermedio 1 level and in the Mathematics subtest at the Avanzado levels.

Lenguaje/Language For Grade 1–Grade 12, the Language subtest measures students’ achievement in applying the principles that form effective writing. From word- and sentence-level skills to whole-paper features, the subtest engages students in real-life activities that demand more than the mere recall of information. The subtest is divided into four sections, with the first containing items that measure proficiency in language mechanics (capitalization, punctuation, and usage) and that resemble an actual editing task. The second, third, and fourth sections assess language expression, including 194 understanding of sentence structure, pre-writing and editing skills, and objectives typically assessed by a direct writing assessment. Reinforcing sound classroom practice, the subtest represents different modes of writing in paragraphs. It also includes questions to assess strategies in pre-writing and composing. Open-ended writing assessments are also available.

A P R E N DA 3 : C O N T E N T A R E A Ortografía /Spelling The Spelling subtest, offered at the Primario 1–Avanzado levels, assesses objectives based on the phonetic and structural principles taught at each of the grade levels. At the Intermedio and Avanzado levels, sight words are replaced by homophones. At the Primario 1 level, students listen to a word and a sentence containing the word. At the Primario 2–Avanzado 2 levels, the spelling words are presented in context. Each spelling item consists of one sentence with three underlined words. Beginning at Primario 3, a “No Hay Error” (“No Mistake”) option is offered. The misspellings used reflect students’ most common spelling errors.

Comprensión Auditiva /Listening Comprehension Aprenda 3 helps assess both listening vocabulary and comprehension for K–9 in recognition of the importance of listening skills in literacy development, learning in general, and everyday life. The Vocabulary portion of this subtest measures knowledge of word meanings. Tested vocabulary represents a carefully chosen sample of the types of words that students at each grade are likely to encounter. The Listening Comprehension portion uses dictated selections and questions. This section parallels the Reading Comprehension subtest, using literary, informational, and functional texts to measure the same modes of comprehension: initial understanding, interpretation, and critical analysis and strategies.

Ciencias/Science The Science subtest assesses students’ understanding of the life, physical, and earth sciences and the nature of science with questions that elicit problem solving and inquiry using one’s basic understanding of science. The Environment subtest for Preprimario 1–Primario 2 helps assess children’s understanding of common experiences in their natural and social environments.

Ciencias Sociales/Social Science At all levels, the Social Science subtest represents contemporary thinking in the content areas of history, geography, civics and government, and economics, aligned with the National Council for the Social Studies (NCSS) Curriculum Standards for Social Studies and state standards. Equal attention is given to history, geography, political science, and economics. Cultural elements are included across the entire subtest and a balance between national and international issues is reflected. Using the National Standards for History as a guideline, the history questions focus on the history of the United States, Western civilization, and non-Western people and societies who share our interdependent world. Geography questions reflect the growing importance of both physical and human geography in today’s schools and are based on the Geography for Life: National Geography Standards. The political science component helps assess students’ basic understanding of the U.S. system of government as outlined in the National Standards for Civics and Government. The economics questions help evaluate both macroeconomic and microeconomic concepts and are founded on the Voluntary National Content Standards in Economics.

OLSAT® 8 can be administered with Stanford 10 to relate a student’s actual achievement with his or her school ability. When these tests are given in combination, an Achievement/Ability Comparison (AAC) score is obtained. AACs describe a student’s achievement in relation to the achievement of students with the same measured school ability. AAC scores give educators a better understanding of each student’s potential for success in school.

S ta nfor d E L P a n d S ta nfor d S L P : CONTENT ARE A

CONTENT AREA Listening The Listening subtest measures students’ comprehension of conversational English or Spanish and their understanding of sentence-level and longer discourse. At the Primary–High School levels, the teacher reads the script or plays an audiocassette or CD that gives a standardized presentation of directions and stimuli. The subtest includes two tasks. The first task assesses the student’s skill in listening for specific information. At the Readiness–Pre-literacy levels, the Listening items move from assessing simple word/phrase comprehension to comprehension of short stories accompanied by visual prompts. At the Primary level, students listen to a short speech and/ or question and then choose the picture that answers the question. At the higher levels, students listen to longer speeches and answer oral and printed questions. The second task measures the student’s skill in responding to authentic, task-based questions. For Elementary–High School levels, students read and listen to a prompt related to a scenario represented by a large graphic. A number of items depict situations related to this scenario. For each item, students listen to a short speech and a question before choosing the correct response from among graphic options. For Readiness–Primary levels, the short scenarios are read to the students.

Early Writing/ Writing Conventions The Writing Conventions subtest for Primary–High School levels measures student’s achievement in applying the principles that form effective writing. The subtest assesses students’ recognition of English or Spanish language grammatical structure, of correctly spelled words, and of conventions, punctuation, and capitalization. These concepts are measured in age-appropriate ways for the youngest ELLs.

Basic Academic Concepts/Early Reading/Reading The Reading subtest measures word understanding and comprehension of different varieties of text. Questions mirror the developmental nature of good reading instruction and the kinds of materials used in exemplary programs. At the Readiness–Pre-literacy levels, items are developmentally appropriate and are ordered according to increasing difficulty. At the Primary–High School levels, item types increase in difficulty, from sight-word recognition and sentence comprehension to vocabulary acquisition and comprehension of discourse. The Reading subtest aligns with the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) and assesses reading with three types of text: literary, informational, and functional. Questions measure two modes of comprehension: 1) initial understanding and interpretation, and 2) vocabulary/idioms in context.

S ta nfor d E L P a n d S ta nfor d S L P : CONTENT ARE A Writing The direct Writing subtest provides authentic information about students’ productive skills in English or Spanish and can be used to facilitate quick results for placement of students. At the Readiness–Pre-literary levels, this subtest elicits developmentally appropriate writing performance. At the upper levels, it requires a written response to a picture prompt. The subtest measures objectives that cannot be assessed with multiple-choice questions. For example, at the lower grade levels it assesses correct letter and word formation; at the upper levels it evaluates appropriate and precise word choice, varied sentence structure, organization of sentences, and degree of fluency.

Speaking The Speaking subtest elicits a variety of discourse samples with efficient, individually administered teacher-scored tasks. This subtest measures phonemic and linguistic accuracy, informational appropriateness, and overall intelligibility in the language. Teachers read the script; or, for Primary–High School levels, the teacher also has the option of playing an audiocassette or CD with a standardized recording of all stimuli and directions. At the Pre-literacy–High School levels, the Speaking subtest includes four tasks. For the Repeat/Read Aloud task, the student repeats a word, phrase, or sentence using written and spoken prompts. For the Sentence Completion tasks, the student completes the beginning of a sentence using auditory and visual prompts. For the Storytelling tasks, the student tells a story about three sequenced pictures. For the Social Interaction task, the student responds to an utterance with a single sentence. At the Readiness level, the Speaking subtest includes three tasks. For the Repeat/Read Aloud task, the student repeats a word, phrase, or sentence using spoken prompts. For the Oral Vocabulary task, the student names objects that are presented in pictures. For the Answer Questions task, the student retells a story that is presented with a series of three pictures.

English Language Learners

Focus on English language learners by gaining more insight into their academic skills, cognitive abilities, and English language competency. Our solutions can help you close the academic gap between English language learners and higher performing subgroups. Kim, for example, is a native of Vietnam and has been in the United States for two years. Currently in the eighth grade, she still struggles with writing, reading, and speaking English. After testing, Kim was given instructional interventions that addressed her language proficiency, and she is now making significant progress in improving her academic and English language skills. The Orleans-Hanna is also a valuable component to include in your district’s selection of career exploration tools because it fulfills the School to Work law’s requirement that students must be exposed to career exploration no later than Grade 7.

Scoring/Reporting Options: Machine scoring via Pearson Scoring and Reporting Services or hand scoring. ReadyResults.net (local scoring and reporting)

Questions are in the format of lessons that include charts and graphs and cover algebra topics such as expressions, exponents, and integers.

Student Report Forms help students interpret their test scores and learn how other students with the same scores did in a first-year algebra course.

ORLEANS-HANNA: CO N T EN T A R E A A N D S CO R I N G & R EP O RT I N G

CONTENT AREA Five lessons introduce information and require students to use their reasoning skills to discover answers to the problems that follow. Problem-solving items help accurately assess students’ ability to handle new situations. These items use charts and graphs similar to those specified in the NCTM Curriculum and Evaluation Standards for School Mathematics. A review test assesses very general middle-school mathematics objectives.

Scoring & Reporting services n Scoring Key enables classroom teachers to determine results immediately. Student answer

sheets include self-reported report card grades in Mathematics, English, Science, and Social Studies. Extensive research shows that combining raw scores from algebra test problems and grades in these subjects gives significantly more accurate results than using raw scores alone. The scoring key weights the information automatically. n Student Report Form gives teachers a straightforward way to explain test results to students

and parents.

When you scan and score at your school, district, or diocese office, use ReadyResults.net—a complete scanning, scoring, and reporting system for viewing and controlling your assessment results online in a secure environment. To learn more about ReadyResults.net, please see pages 10–11.

On-Site and Internet-Based Courses General Topics Assessment Literacy Duration: 3 Hours The Assessment Literacy model is a decision-making model for building understanding of what assessment methods to use to answer specific types of questions. When we assess, we use the data to make curriculum, instructional, student-based, and system-based decisions. You will explore the assessments you use and develop an understanding of what kind of information can be gathered using the four essential components of this model. As a result of this session, you will have the tools to promote, support, and explain “data-driven decision-making” in your system or school.

New course options are being developed now! A sample of some of the on-site and Internet-based services that we offer are listed here. To increase the options available to you, we can offer both traditional on-site, instructor-led courses and independent modules for these same courses via our new learning management system. The advantage? Learn whenever it is convenient for you and be able to document your participation via activities that are presented in the online courses. Several of these brief options are included with your purchase of an assessment. The more extensive assessment-specific professional development options (whether on-site or online) are designed to offer you the next level of training beyond the post-test workshop that your Educational Measurement Consultant has provided.

For the most up-to-date information regarding our course offerings, please see the Professional Development tab at: PearsonAssessments.com/ Learning Assessment
