Dear Friends, This year represents another milestone for LEE & LOW BOOKS. With the addition of Children’s Book Press (CBP) as our latest imprint, 2012 officially became a “building” year for the company. What does this mean? First, we established relationships with CBP’s talented authors and illustrators to assure them that the future of their books was a priority. Second, the inventory of CBP was vastly depleted, so gradually replenishing stock of popular titles was crucial. Third, inserting the CBP titles into our website and catalog was necessary—a time consuming but rewarding task. And fourth, there were a host of other little details to attend to that are too numerous to list here. As of this writing, we have accomplished all of these things to varying degrees, and we are continuing to work diligently to bring CBP into the Lee & Low family. It has been an exciting year so far and we are proud to reintroduce a collection of Children’s Book Press titles to our customers. Look for the CBP icon on pages 14–36 to see what’s available. The stars have been shining for some of our new releases. It Jes’ Happened: When Bill Traylor Started to Draw, one of our 2005 New Voices Award Honor winners, was published this spring, along with Auntie Yang’s Great Soybean Picnic. Both books have received rave reviews, including starred reviews from Booklist, School Library Journal, and Kirkus! See the facing page for more award news. Our Tu Books imprint continues to tackle the big ideas and “what ifs” for which science fiction and fantasy are known. Vodník, by first-time novelist Bryce Moore, takes place in Slovakia and conjures a world where creatures like fire vilas, water ghosts, and Death herself can hold serious grudges, making things extremely uncomfortable for a Roma teenager who gets on their bad side. Cat Girl’s Day Off, by Kimberly Pauley (Sucks to Be Me), imagines a world where people are born with special Talents, which is great for some, but not for Asian American teen Natalie, whose Talent is the ability to talk to and understand cats. By the time you read this, we will be on the verge of welcoming more new books into the world (see page 10 for a sneak peek). And while our work never slows, we must also stop and take a moment to thank all of you for supporting our mission of publishing diverse books for children. The importance of our mission has not lessened over the years. It has, in fact, grown even more relevant as our country and the world continue to evolve ethnically and ponder issues of race. Our passion for creating opportunities for all children to see themselves in the pages of books is as strong as ever, and our enthusiasm for stories about all of us never grows old.

BABY FLO: Florence Mills Lights Up the Stage By Alan Schroeder Illustrated by Cornelius Van Wright and Ying-Hwa Hu

Themes: Biography, Music, Dance, African American Interest

“A stirring picture-book biography.”  —Booklist

Straight up: Florence was a remarkable child, and that’s a fact.

Pint-sized dynamo “Baby Florence” Mills was singing and dancing just about as soon as she

could talk and walk. She warbled a tune while her mama did

laundry. Everywhere Flo went, she strutted through the streets of Washington, D.C., with a high-steppin’ cakewalk. Flo’s mama and daddy knew they had a budding entertainer in the family, so they entered Florence in a talent contest. Baby Flo went on to become an international superstar during the Harlem Renaissance—but first she had to overcome a case of stage fright and discover that winning wasn’t everything. Here is the spirited story of that spunky young girl learning to chase her dreams with confidence. A sensation in her time, Baby Flo is back, dancing and singing her way into hearts and history.

A story about finding your talent—at any age.

Growing up as an enslaved boy on an Alabama cotton farm, Bill Traylor worked all day in the

hot fields. When slavery ended, Bill’s family stayed on the farm as sharecroppers. There Bill grew to manhood, raised his own family, and cared for the land and his animals. By 1935 Bill was eighty-one and all alone on his farm. So he packed his bag and moved to Montgomery, the capital of Alabama. Lonely and poor, he wandered the busy downtown streets. But deep within himself Bill had a reservoir of memories of working and living on the land, and soon those memories blossomed into pictures. Bill began to draw people, places, and animals from his earlier life, as well as scenes of the city around him. Today Bill Traylor is considered to be one of the most important self-taught American folk

By Bill Wise Illustrated by Adam Gustavson

Themes: Biography, Disability, Sports

“[A] rousing picture-book biography. . . . Gustavson demonstrates a gift for bringing a historical setting to life.” —Publishers Weekly “A fascinating introduction to a little-known hero.” —Kirkus Reviews

BILL WISE is the author of Lee & Low’s Louis Sockalexis: Native American Baseball Pioneer, winner of the Carter G. Woodson Book Award and the Children’s Book Award from the International Reading Association. An avid baseball fan, Wise first heard about William Hoy when he was a child. Years later, after further research, Wise was inspired to bring Hoy’s remarkable story to young readers. In addition to writing books, Wise teaches eighth-grade math and language arts. He and his family live in Gorham, Maine. ADAM GUSTAVSON has illustrated more than twenty highly praised books for children, among them The Yankee at the Seder, recipient of a Sydney Taylor Book Award Honor. In spite of his lack of baseball-playing skill, Gustavson enthusiastically embraced William Hoy’s story and spent months researching baseball rules, uniforms, and stadiums in use during Hoy’s lifetime. Gustavson is also a part-time art educator at the college level. He lives in West Orange, New Jersey, with his wife and their two sons.

June 19, 1889. From his center field position, Washington Nationals star William Hoy eyed the opposing team’s base runner.

William Hoy loved baseball. Growing up in the 1860s and ’70s, he dreamed of one day playing

in the major leagues. Fulfilling this dream, a far-off fantasy for many boys, was even more of a long shot for William, who was deaf. Striving to find his place in a hearing world, Hoy became a shoemaker. He took pride in his work, but baseball was still his real love. When an amateur team coach saw him playing behind the shoemaker’s shop, Hoy dazzled the coach with his hard-hitting skills. Moving from amateur clubs to the minor leagues and eventually to the majors, Hoy proved himself again and again— overcoming obstacles and becoming a star both on and off the baseball diamond. Silent Star: The Story of Deaf Major Leaguer William Hoy is a tribute to one of the most inspirational figures in baseball history. A talented player with a standout record, Hoy is a shining

PUFFLING PATROL By Ted and Betsy Lewin

Themes: Animals, Environment/Nature

“As always, the Lewins combine their artistic and storytelling gifts, capturing the beauty of the landscape and the awkwardly amusing appeal of the birds.” —The Horn Book Magazine “Wonderfully vibrant and expressive.” —Booklist

Join Erna, Dáni, and the rest of The Puffling Patrol as they search for lost pufflings and return them to the sea.

Every April, the Westman Islands off the coast of Iceland become home to hundreds of thousands of puffins. They spend the summer on the rocky cliffs of the islands, caring for their newly hatched

chicks. By the middle of August, it is time for the young puffins, called pufflings, to make their way to the sea. And that is when the children of The Puffling Patrol are called to action. Ted and Betsy Lewin journeyed to the Westman Islands to experience The Puffling Patrol’s endeavors firsthand. In the company of Erna, Dáni, and their father, they drive through town at night, carefully searching for confused little birds that have glided down onto the streets instead of out to sea. Will the children find the pufflings before the birds encounter danger? The fascinating story of this unique annual rescue, combined with Ted Lewin’s dramatic paintings and Betsy Lewin’s lively field sketches, is sure to make Puffling Patrol a hit with animal lovers of all ages.

Bring Our Books to Life with a Visit from a LEE & LOW Author or Illustrator!

Author and illustrator visits are a great way to engage young readers and spark their creativity. No matter where you’re located or what your budget is, we’ve got the perfect author or illustrator for you. FINDING AN AUTHOR OR ILLUSTRATOR

COST

Visit our Author/Illustrator Locator online at leeandlow. com/p/caendar-where_authors_live.mhtml, or contact us directly to find someone in your area.

Your budget should cover the author or illustrator’s honorarium along with all necessary travel and hotel expenses. Honorariums vary, but we can help you find the right fit for your budget.

Think about what you want the visit to accomplish. Do you prefer a workshop for a small group of students or a speaker who will address a large assembly? What age and grade are the students? Do you want an author or illustrator who can also speak to educators?
