M

arine Corps Community Services Okinawa, Japan, is proud to announce the Kinser Festival, a freeadmission event with loads of fun for individuals of all ages island-wide. This year’s festival is scheduled for Saturday, September 22 from 3 to 10 p.m. and Sunday, September 23 from 1 to 10 p.m. on Camp Kinser near the Warehouse Area (Buildings 325 & 326). Typhoon dates are Saturday, September 29 from 3 to 10 p.m. and Sunday, September 30 from 1 to 10 p.m. Kinser Festival is an annual event that delights many, both service members and locals alike, with free entertainment, game booths, amusement rides, Kiddie Land, and enough cultural cuisine to please the heartiest appetite. MCCS festivals on Okinawa always feature exciting entertainment for all ages and this year’s Kinser Festival is no exception. Topping the entertainment list this year is the hiphop sound of Independent Music World Series winner The Urban Sophisticates. Also lined up are Stanley Baird, with his jazzy saxophone, and the soulful, earthy vocals of Marc Broussard. These artists will appear courtesy of Armed Forces Entertainment. The funky soul band Zapp will also be there, bringing you “more bounce to the ounce.” This year’s Kinser Festival will offer sports lovers a chance to take part in the fun. serving others in the military and civilian communities on the island. It’s a lofty goal but one that our staff is committed to pursuing more than 50 weeks each year in our partnership with the Okinawa Marine and another 12 times annually in our sister publication, Okinawa Living. Our goal in launching this redesign more than five months ago was to create a better publication by making The Source an even more valuable resource for you. Your feedback about how we’ve done—and are doing—is vital to helping us make it even more relevant to your needs. Please email thesource@ okinawa.usmc-mccs.org with your comments, questions or ideas about our “new” publication. Remember, it’s more than a resource, it’s The Source.

T

he military life calls for exceptional support and understanding from family members and loved ones. Having to cope with the absence of a spouse is difficult, especially if he or she is deployed. Additionally, being new to and unfamiliar with an area is enough to keep you up at night. To lighten this load, the MCCS Counseling and Advocacy Program offers an educational support group for spouses of deployed service members. The purpose of the group is to help spouses develop new friendships, relieve stress, learn to cope with deployment, and enjoy Okinawa. The support group is held every Wednesday from 10 a.m. to noon at the Counseling and Advocacy Program Center (Building 439) on Camp Foster. So, take advantage of this FREE program while living on Okinawa. It’s just another way that MCCS “makes Okinawa home!”

but also increase morale and pride in service. This special program is designed specifically for service members and is a great way to build camaraderie and ensure that Marines and sailors enjoy their time on Okinawa responsibly. MCCS Tours+ has knowledgeable guides that can lead Marines across the island on fun-filled jaunts to locations such as Shuri Castle or on historical tours on Tunnel Rats and Battle Sites to give them a brief overview of the American and Japanese roles in the Battle of Okinawa. Choose from the regular Tours+ arsenal of guided treks or customize a tour specifically for your unit. As a veteran guide and former Marine, tour leader Chris Majewski enjoys helping history come alive for Marines. “Many Marines hear about the Corps’ great battles in boot camp or OCS but never really get an opportunity at places like Camp Pendleton or Camp Lejeune to see history first hand,“ Majewski said. ”Here on Okinawa, they can really get a feel for what their fellow Marines went through.” It’s that special connection to the past that makes unit tours so valuable. Price for tours includes transportation, tour guide, and a customized tour designed to fit your unit’s needs. Units can also pay with unit funds. See your unit fund representative for details or call your local Tours+ office for more information. bringing blue-eyed soul to Kinser Festival

I

f you boiled down American music to its essence, removing the impurities of tabloid celebrity and of record company manufacture, what you would be left with would be its soul. What you would be left with is Marc Broussard. At only 25, Broussard has the earthy voice and intensely personal lyrics of a man who has lived twice as long and experienced twice as much. He was born in Louisiana, the hotbed of American jazz and blues, to a father who went on to become a member of the Louisiana Music Hall of Fame. Broussard has been steeped in music since his birth, and it’s obvious he’s been taking notes. Broussard brings us blue-eyed soul at its absolute finest. This summer he

released S.O.S.: Save Our Soul. For all but one track, he’s chosen to cover the masters of the genre and proven that he’s an emerging master in his own right. And he does it all so personally, so awesomely, that even old-school Motown fans might, for a second, forget it’s not a Broussard original. Broussard’s original track on S.O.S., “Come in From the Cold,” fits seamlessly with the rest of the album but does not go unnoticed. It draws from the lessons learned from the kings and queens of R&B but offers a prescient twist, showing the way to the future of the genre. And the future is the essence, the purity of what made soul an integral part of all American music that followed.

Marc Broussard will be performing at the Kinser Festival on September 22 and 23. The shows are free and open to everyone on the island. For more information, contact MCCS Entertainment at 645-5821.

othing goes better with summer barbeque than a buttery ear of roasted corn. But if the tykes in your life are too tiny to gnaw the kernels off the ear, make life easier—and less messy—with a kernel stripper. Gone are the dangerous days of holding the cob with one hand and using a knife to cut the kernels. Kernel Kutter, Inc. has come up with contraption that features a stainless steel blade that expands to fit ears of all sizes. This contraption can be yours for only $6.99 at thekitchenstore.com. More ergonomic but slightly pricier is OXO’s Corn Stripper, part of the company’s successful Good Grips line. The contrivance looks like a computer mouse, and a single sweep of the cob yields a container-full of kernels. Get one for your kitchen from oxo.com for $11.99. OXO.com and thekitchenstore.com

hile Star Trek fans wait eagerly for the re-mastered HD DVD original series (with 21st century CGI replacing 1960’s optical effects) to hit the shelves and the new J.J. Tackling the in Fat

(PART I)

The Ryukyu ‘Do

I

t has created one of the hottest health debates in years. It has become a consumer versus food industry show down. Major restaurant chains like McDonald’s and Taco Bell are eliminating its use in their cooking oils, as has MCCS. It’s trans fat. Trans fat is made from adding hydrogen to vegetable oils in a process called hydrogenation and is found in commercially fried foods, vegetable shortening, hard margarines, crackers, cookies, cakes, snack foods, and other processed foods made with “partially hydrogenated” vegetable oil. Some dietary supplements (including energy and nutrition bars) have even fallen victim to trans fat. So you ask: Why is trans fat being ostracized, considering it was developed to curtail the heart clogging intake of saturated fats? After many years of research and data collection, trans fat has been found to act just like saturated fat, and can actually be worse. Trans fat raises your LDL (bad cholesterol) just likeX saturated fat. However, trans fat also lowers your HDL (good cholesterol), unlike saturated fat. This increase in LDL and decrease in HDL increases your risk for coronary heart disease, which includes heart attacks, strokes, and atherosclerosis.

S

E

ake a quick glance at any hangout popular with Okinawa’s youth, and you’ll see a profusion of wickedly wild haircuts accented with highlights in every color of the rainbow. In contrast to the tidy cuts worn by most of our base population, these youth (of both genders) sport styles ranging from cutting-edge cool to looking like a weed whacker attacked their head. But where did this hip and funky style come from? The answer appears in the archives of a highly popular 1990s Fuji TV series called “Scissor Series.” Featuring top Tokyo stylists dueling in real time to produce the most superior style, the show made a star of hairdresser Masayuki Aoyama, whose flamboyant razor-cutting techniques (relying on angled cuts to give depth and movement) quickly became all the rage. In the hundreds of salons that dot the fashionable Tokyo wards of Shibuya, Harajuku, and Minato-ku (these three wards alone boast more salons than the entire L.A. metro area), clients clamored for copies of Aoyama’s cuts. The trend quickly spread thoughout the country and to the Ryukyus as well. If you’re feeling the need for strands that stand out from the crowd, Okinawa has no shortage of ’hair-makes,’ where able stylists can do your ’do (and makeup, too). Keep in mind, Western hair is usually much thinner than the average Japanese strand (which can be up to five times thicker), so that outrageous style you seek might not turn out quite as expected. Not ready to commit to a cut? Then local novelty shop ETWS has just the thing for you—wigs of the most popular Japanese haircuts. These pieces from maker Lapin d’Or come in an array of styles (such as the “Mushroom Layer” and “Asymmetrical Fringe”) for both men and women, and range in price from ¥6,000 to ¥8,200. Great items for a costume party or a Friday night out (for the truly brave), for just under $75 you, too, can have a Ryukyu ‘do.

I read your article about pachinko, so I know a little more about what a pachinko machine is. When I was talking to a friend from mainland Japan, he was telling me about a game called “pachislot.” What are “pachislot” machines? Are they a new version of pachinko? —Richard Watters

P

achislot, which is a derivative of the words “pachi” from pachinko and “slot” from slot machines, are basically the same type of “onearmed bandits” that can be found in Sin City. However, pachislot (which are also known as “pachislo”) machines add a bit of sophistication in the form of buttons used by players to “manually” stop the spinning reels after either pulling the lever or pressing start. Although this may sound like an easy proposition for a person with a quick eye and good hand-eye coordination, it isn’t by a long shot. However, this illusion is an important part of pachislot’s draw. Today’s pachislot business operates on basically the same quasilegal system as pachinko. Players exchange winning slugs for prizes and in turn, exchange these prizes for cash. Pachislot machines can usually be found in the same parlors as pachinko machines. Pachislot machines are gaining in popularity among gamblers in Japan. Regular players believe that machines are “adjusted” to produce a higher jackpot rate to attract customers to a parlor in the morning, and regulars can be seen forming lines early every day to vye for the first shot at machines rumored to be “gushers.” The opening of a new pachinko/pachislot parlor is also quite a big deal among regular players for the same reason—lines can, and usually do, reach around the block as the newly opened shop

attempts to steal business away from established parlors with higher jackpot percentages. While it is generally believed that pachinko was “born” in Nagoya, it is also believed that the pachislot business, which boasts well over a million machines nationwide, began on Okinawa. According to the Managing Director of Sanshu Kanko Kaihatsu Co., Ltd (which includes the Monaco Leisure Group, the Sanshu Country Club Golf Course in mainland Japan, and Monakids Jungle), the original president and owner of Sanshu Kanko Kaihatsu played tenor saxophone in a jazz band that played regular gigs in clubs on the military bases. Wishing to re-create this upscale and glamorous atmosphere, the enterprising musician, named Yukio Kawabata, opened a music club off base complete with all the trimmings— including a couple of second-hand slot machines he purchased from a surplus/recycle shop. The rest, as they say, is history. Initially naming his company “Monaco” because his wife was an ardent Grace Kelly fan, Mr. Kawabata filled halls with “slug machines” converted to operate on 30.8 mm diameter tokens and pachinko machines. The slug machines, which became known as “pachislot,” soon spread throughout Japan. The Monaco Leisure Group currently operates nine pachinko/pachislot parlors on Okinawa. The largest manufacturer of pachislot machines, Sega Sammy (which

recently purchased Sega Corporation), manufactured over 1,600,000 pachislot machines in 2003 alone. Recently, Sega Sammy Corporation has also been releasing their more popular game consoles directly into peoples’ homes—in the form of Nintendo DS, PlayStation 2, and

PlayStation Portable versions of pachislot tied to popular anime characters and television personalities. Some believe these games are strategically targeted to breed a new generation of vacanteyed players patiently waiting for “the big one.” —Mike Daley
