GOUVEIA SCHOOL

B EJA, PORTUGAL

The intervention in Diogo de Gouveia Secondary School in Beja was characterised by the renovation and upgrading of the existing building, extensions adding three new bodies and the remodelling of the school grounds. In the pre-existing buildings the distribution of the spaces and the respective original functions were maintained. The extended bodies – designed to house specific learning spaces such as the library, ICT rooms, planetarium, multipurpose laboratory and the covered games field – were laid out and dimensioned so as to not overpower the existing parts. Their articulation with the main galleries create the functional and safety conditions for opening the school to the surrounding community in extra and post-curricular periods in the context of the activities involved in after-work training, cultural and social events and sports.

The acoustic quality is greatly improved with the new epoxy floors that replace the damaged ceramic or wooden ones. It also makes for better hygiene characteristics. The false ceilings and walls added conceal the technical installations thus leaving the structure intact. Normal classroom

Auditorium

This room in one of the building corners was converted to a dance studio. The position and modifications made, provide an adequate space for dance classes. There is plenty of natural light, but in the hot summer climate the new external blinds protect from the heat of direct sunlight. Dramatic expression gymnasium

At the far end of the new covered sports pavilion are the showers, dressing rooms, and all necessary installations for the sport practice in the pavilion and sports fields in front of this. The volume is defined in the south with a wavy perforated aluminium sheet. This shades the interior, protects from wind and provides more privacy. The air conditioning, and all its conducts and machines, were the hardest to introduce in the entire building. In this special room the ceiling hides the entrance of the conducts directly above, on the roof. The position of the machines and conducts goes through carefully planning so not to be seen from the street or from the building itself.

All added roofs were removed leaving only the structure. This exposed damaged area where the slab had round glass brick, originaly designed to allow light in, had to be removed. Here a new skylight was designed to meet the original intention and improving the acoustics with the perforated ceiling.

ACADEMIC PROJECTS

MIXED

USE

QUARTER

LISBOA, PORTUGAL

In this academic exercise, the work group had to design a new public space set in two city quarters. Designed to be a mix-use quarter the placement of the volumes is set by direct analyses of the surrounding. There are three main volumes, in the west a seven storey office building glues itself to the existing one, facing west and the inner block. This semi closed block is lower and mix-used, in it a semi private square is designed to provide new push to the site. On the east of the site, a bigger volume is set to accommodate mainly housing and some stores and offices on the ground floor. This last one was then further developed by me individually. The external design of the volume makes a distinct contrast between the facades: the ones facing out are marked with horizontal lines and the facades facing in are dominated by the adjustable panels that provide shade from the sun. Inside there is a great variety of housing typologies.

CONCEPT MASTERPLAN “THE

SALT MARSH ”

B ARREIRO, PORTUGAL

In this exercise we analyse the diverse coastal territory around the salt marsh of “Coina”. To boost development, we propose the creation of pathways that connect the different areas, and also give the population the opportunity to enjoy the landscape creating a renewed interest in the conservation of the fragile ecosystem of the salt marsh.

CONNECTING

SHORES

B ARREIRO, PORTUGAL

The design to reconnect Barreiro and Seixal is not only a bridge but also a public space to be lived. The project main feature, the surface Metro line, is placed in the previous path of a partial dike and a destroyed bridge for cargo trains. The bridge section is designed to have a rotating module to allow access to larger boats on the estuary. The dike is widened to accommodate a bicycle path, a footpath and green areas, thus creating a public space and adding a new view of the surrounding landscape.

On the more urban side of the bridge a new public space is designed, giving a sense of continuity. In the square a bar as a sculptural design, a landmark to be lived. The new public space exists in the edge of the city, connecting it to the natural landscape of the estuary.

NEW

LIFE FOR THE OLD FARM

B ARREIRO, PORTUGAL

The choice is made to design the new structures near the entrance of the grounds. The old buildings keep their position and the new ones are set downhill, thus having a privileged view of the farm grounds and surrounding landscape. Each build is carefully placed not only to take advantage of the view, but also to give a sense of “village to the entire ensemble. This separation respects the program and adds flexibility for present and future uses.

It can be seen in this overall view of the buildings, that similar openings and a series of pathways and stairway connects them, reinforcing the idea of set.
