CLIENT PUBLIC REALM PROJECT STREET RE-DESIGN FOR PEDESTRIAN & BICYCLE SAFETY AND QUALITY SITE ASTORIA, QUEENS, NEW YORK CITY MEDIUM AUTOCAD MAP 3D, ADOBE CS, GIS
Pedestrians First at Grand Army Plaza Brooklyn’s grandest public space at the top of Prospect Park has always been a work in progress. Grand Army Plaza, an oval-shaped public space composed of monuments ringed by an inner and an outer roadway, was built as the main entrance to the park in 1866, serving as a buffer between nature and city and happened to be the confluence of some of Brooklyn’s busiest avenues. Over the years, a monumental archway was added, fountains came and went, and eventually the roads were widened until the lush plaza was effectively cut off from the surrounding Prospect Heights and Park Slope neighborhoods.

Astoria Pool & Amphitheater
CLIENT PUBLIC REALM PROJECT HISTORIC PRESERVATION & REUSE OF THE LARGEST OF THE 1930'S ROBERT MOSES ERA PUBLIC POOLS SITE ASTORIA, QUEENS, NEW YORK CITY MEDIUM CAD, ADOBE CS, NIKON
The objective is to bring the Dive Pool back into the fold of the original parti. While reinstating the dive program is not feasible, our proposal for an Amphitheater provides a meaningful way to engage the space by bringing performance back into the facilities programmatic structure. We propose re-purposing the space for use as a live performance venue. A place for concerts, theater and other community oriented events. At full capacity the scale of this project is 37,377 sf and can seat 2,250 people. This is almost double the size of Central Park’s Delacorte Theater where “Shakespeare in the Park” is performed annually.

ENSTRIMAN Geri [HEALING INSTRUMENT (HAITIAN CREOLE)] SITE PORT-AU-PRINCE MEDIUM RHINO, CAD, ADOBE CS
Our project aims to provide a healing environment to patients of Tuberculosis and HIV Aids. By providing a sanitary, modern, and sustainable habitat we seek to improve the quality of life for the individual and by association the community. We understand that social, psychological and environmental conditions around us are fundamental components of our health. After the earthquake Haiti has been in a state of devastation and disarray, increasingly vulnerable to the spread
of contagious diseases such as cholera, and existing epidemics such as tuberculosis. Haiti’s poor infrastructure, planning and neglect agitate the earthquakes devastation. We understand that the creation of modern well built structures and communities can be the one element to thwart future disasters. This is why we named our project ENSTRIMAN GERI, the Haitian Creole term for healing instrument, through it we aim to build, heal and sustain. NOON

LIFELINE
MUMBAI’S NEW GATEWAY SITE MUMBAI, INDIA MEDIUM 3D MAX, CAD, ADOBE CS This proposal re-envisions a new connection between Mumbai and NaviMumbai. Currently, the State Government of Maharashtra proposes to build a 22km automobile bridge from Nhava-Sheva (Navi Mumbai) to Sewri Bay (Island City) solely through private finances. Our proposal, a “Life Line”, revisits the Mumbai Trans-Harbor Link to become the programmatic and formal catalyst for change on the eastern waterfront of the Island City, acting as a lifeline for Mumbai’s future. With the advent of new technology, this link will surpass typical automobile infrastructure and will function as a mediator between public and private programs, while acting as a proponent of intergenerational equity and environmental sustainability.

The Life Line is the trigger for change. The objective of this project is to reconfigure the current government proposal to include efficient mass transit systems and new functions for industry, ecology, and social adaptation. The connection to Sewri Station on the Harbor Line becomes a gateway hub where new pedestrianization and new high density development are anticipated. This effect will reduce pressure on the mangroves and the waterfront while placing importance on nature as a means of economic gain also known as natural capitalism. The factors of natural capitalism and the Coastal Regulation Zone policy will aid in programming water front activities with soft and hard edges that generate revenue while providing zones of accessibility to the public. The Life Line’s connections onto the Island City involve appropriate connections to the Harbor, Central, and Western lines to eventually strengthen the east-west axis of Southern Mumbai as well as towards Navi Mumbai.

BUFFALO POST-INDUSTRIAL LANDSCAPE
REPOWERING BUFFALO RESEARCH AND ANALYSIS OF STAKEHOLDERS SITE SOUTH BUFFALO, NEW YORK MEDIUM CAD, ADOBE CS This project seeks to strategize ways of leveraging University at Buffalo resources and by-products [energies] toward activating the city’s cultural and industrial landscape. Embracing the complexity and fragility of Buffalo’s multi-layered post-industrial urban condition[s], we have identified and established both locational and systemic relationships [ecologies] in order to open up opportunities for physical and strategic design interventions. We are not so much concerned with design at the “regional” scale but rather with regional design at multiple scales and time frames.

ALTERNATE CAMPUS AND FIELD LAB
This in mind, the conceptual framework of this project is the production of locality using principles of industrial ecology as an analytical and programming methodology. Specifically, field_LAB | ALT_campus poses and responds to the following questions: 1 How can the resources and by-products of the University at Buffalo stimulate both culture and industry [energy]? 2 What kinds of partnerships [ecology] can be forged between the University as a whole, its’ various departments, and the community which it simultaneously serves and feeds off of? 3 What sources of funding [economy] can the University at Buffalo leverage towards different ends?

The aim of our design response is to rewire that system through intervention on multiple levels. The physical demarcation of the site is anchored in the post-industrial artifact, with the ultimate goal of reactivating these remnants in the service of a new economic hub. The industrial spines and shells of Sunset Park offer a means by which to thread into the fabric of the community—the elevated Gowanus Expressway as threshold; the warehouses as identifiable knots within a fabric. Physical interventions along and under the expressway structure will be inserted to create exhibition, functional spaces to be used in both short-term [coordinated events; awareness campaigns] and semi-permanent [worker support and education spaces] capacities. Adjacent under utilized warehouses will be reprogrammed into a network of business incubators and industry training spaces, following [and expanding upon] the model offered by Manhattan’s Garment Industry Development Corporation. These steps would introduce an integrated system of educational, developmental, and supportive spaces into Sunset Park, ultimately empowering its working population and the community as a whole.

Improving the Microclimate: Using Storm Water System to mitigate Urban Heat Island Effect Urban Heat Islands are the variations in local temperatures that occur predominantly due to building materials, such as concrete, that absorb the heat and radiate it back into the environment. Integrating water and water retentive surfaces helps alleviate this problem. Currently due to surface runoff, water collected through precipitation gets wasted and is therefore under utilized. This gap can be targeted to offset the problem of Urban Heat Island effect and improve the micro climate of the city.

MITIGATING URBAN HEAT ISLAND EFFECTS SITE BRONX, NEW YORK CITY MEDIUM CAD, ADOBE CS, NIKON A threefold strategy can be integrated at micro scales within the city. First the speed of the surface runoff needs to be SLOWED down. Curbing the speed will help STORE some of this water. This stored water gives the opportunity to GROW trees and vegetation in the city, and also helps in cooling the building.
The integration of this strategy can have a huge impact on other macro infrastructures in the city. It can help reduce CSO overflows and thereby reduce water pollution. For every 1 degree celsius reduction in temperature an average household can reduce their electricity bills by 2-4%. This new strategy can help reduce the temperatures by 3 degrees celsius which is an average saving of $180 per household.

etter to The President of the Dominican Republic, In this Great and Blessed Island Nation there is a desperate cry for compassion and for social responsibility. Look into the eyes of the children and you see the future of the Dominican Republic. Inside their minds is a paradise of possibilities and opportunities. We must take on this new challenge of our
generation to eliminate poverty and increase the quality of the built environment for all participants. There are tremendous influences and forces working towards the degradation of the natural environment and impeding on a healthy symbiosis with humanity.....
