Our aim with this year’s Design Directory is to inform, inspire and excite. This is a source book of bright ideas and practical solutions to assist you on the decorating journey. Advice comes from a selection of Scotland’s top design businesses, with insights into how to get the look you want, which areas need specialist attention, which corners can be cut, and how to use trends and innovations to your advantage. It doesn’t matter what size your project is, whether it’s one wall, all four, a total kitchen makeover or a brand-new bathroom, the Design Directory will prove to be an essential roommate. What should people know about your company? Carol Yates, owner and designer: With over 25 years in the business, I am one of the most experienced interior designers in Scotland. My company offers a unique and personalised design service, often with a strongly bespoke element. We can create furniture, lighting and cabinetry to suit your home, and we are happy to be involved in the decision-making process at the build stage. My own style is a fusion of contemporary and classic, with an eclectic slant. What has been your biggest project so far? We have done large projects for both private and corporate clients. For housebuilders and developers, we provide showhome designs, and have also worked in the restaurant and hotel sector. We are also experts in private residential design and project-management, and offer full turnkey packages. What sets you apart from your competitors? I put a lot of emphasis on my relationship with my

clients – it’s the most important aspect of what I do. Tuning into each individual’s needs, lifestyle and personality is the key to coming up with the design that is right for them. I have long-term clients with whom I’ve worked many times over the years, because there is a positive connection and trust between us. Inspiration comes from… Travelling. Holidays are a key inspiration for me, whether it’s the colours of the South of France or the city vibe of Paris and New York. I love Italy, especially the south – a little piece of it usually finds its way into my projects, and especially into my own home. What are your tips for using an interior designer? 1. Make use of their expertise: for example, we have a vast library of resources in our studio to suit all tastes, including design-led furniture, lighting, accessories, wallcoverings and fabrics. 2. Choose someone you feel a strong connection with – this results in the best design. 3. Invest in a key piece of furniture, something you really love. It can be the starting point of the design process. What makes a project challenging? Working on new-build projects from the ground up is challenging but exciting. It’s great to be part of a team of specialists working together to create a bespoke, finished home. Coping with specific timeframes can be difficult as well; but if you’re part of a team, everyone is aiming for the same goal.

What should people know about your company? Henrietta Simpson, principal director: Designworks was established more than 40 years ago. It’s a family business that now has two generations involved. We are a professional interior design and architectural practice specialising in residential and commercial work. Our offices in Glasgow’s west end are attached to a large showroom where customers can browse an extensive array of furniture, lighting and accessories and consult a vast selection of fabric and wallpaper books. Anyone visiting the showroom seeking help with decorating or renovating their home can rest assured that they will be advised by professional interior designers and architects. What has been your biggest project to date? We have successfully completed many substantial projects over the years, but we are happy to undertake small ones too. The most prestigious among these was being commissioned to supply the table cover and cushion on which the Crown of Scotland was presented at the opening of the Scottish Parliament. What sets you apart from your competitors? Having our own architectural practice allows us to take on work that would leave many of our competitors out of their depth. Inspiration comes from… We are constantly researching progressive interior trends in the UK and abroad, visiting the key design shows across Europe and around the world each year. What are your top tips for someone who is looking to improve their home? 1. Choose a designer who is appropriately qualified. 2. Consult the designer at the start of your project – don’t wait until work has already begun on site. 3. Be open to the design solutions being presented. 4. Trust your designer all the way through the project until it is complete. What questions should a new customer ask? Find out if the type of work the designer specialises in actually meets with your requirements. Ask to see examples of their most recent work. And check that their workload meets your timeline expectations. How do you overcome challenges? By planning well. We recently undertook a project to remodel the interior of a whole house and add a substantial extension while the clients were on holiday – which gave us just six weeks. Everything had to be meticulously planned and ordered prior to their departure so that the schedule of works on site could proceed without delays. What’s planned for the future? We want to develop a more sustainable approach to interior design and to explore new technologies to produce a premium interior design and architectural service for our clients well into the future.

What has been your biggest project so far? We have tackled some very large-scale projects over the years – hotels, student apartments and holiday homes – but to us every commission is important, no matter how big or small it is. What are your top tips for potential clients? 1. Make sure you are totally happy before proceeding. 2. Your home is an extension of your personality, so show it off. 3. If you are uncertain about how to proceed, choose a neutral colour palette then add accessories and fun pieces – these will be easier to change in the future. 4. Be guided by quality, not price. 5. Make sure you absolutely love something before taking the plunge. What questions should a new customer ask? Quiz designers about how they work and what they charge fees for. Establish deadlines to start creating a timeline of works. What makes a project challenging? Deviating from the brief once a project is already well underway is tricky. We always try to accommodate late changes, but it’s not always possible. There is usually a way to compromise so that the project isn’t held up. What’s planned for the future? We’re about to open a new lifestyle showroom, Farmore Studio, near our existing shop in St Andrews to showcase our furniture collections and more of the things we love.

What should people know about your company? Lizzie Bell, designer, director and founder: I launched Lizzie Bell Interiors in 2004, but I have more than 35 years’ experience in the interior design business. My training was in traditional interiors, but this has evolved into a more casual but elegant style with a twist of fun. I have a passion for texture and pattern, and rich colours are at the heart of my design ethos. Attention to detail is very important to me, and I always strive to provide a comfortable, relaxed and personal service. What has been your biggest project so far? Stobo Castle Health Spa, near Peebles in the Borders. I became involved in the interior design and redecoration of Stobo Castle 20 years ago; since then, all 52 bedrooms and bathrooms and all the main public rooms have been designed individually, creating that country-house look that makes the place so special. Stobo won the Best Destination Spa in the UK award for 2018.

Inspiration comes from… Really anything that makes the focus of a scheme suddenly fall into place. It could be a beautiful piece of fabric; a stunning rug; a painting; the view out of a window… In one house, I even decorated a room using a scheme based on the owner’s much loved and very pretty Chinoiserie cup and saucer. What are your top tips for working with an interior designer? 1. Come with an open mind. 2. Don’t be afraid of colour. 3. Don’t be afraid to ask for advice. 4. Don’t be afraid to trust the designer you’ve come to for help. 5. Prioritise rooms and areas in order of importance.
What sets you apart from your competitors? I spend a great deal of time talking to clients to understand what their vision is before I start any
What makes a project challenging? Every project has its own challenges. Some are easier to resolve than others, but there always has to be a solution. Lighting, plumbing and awkward architectural features can all cause problems, and I’m lucky that I have a trusted team of tradesmen that I’ve worked with for many years who never fail to resolve whatever issue is at hand. What’s planned for the future? Lots – hopefully all good! I am passionate about my business and about what I deliver. I am very fortunate that I have lots of returning customers with whom I have a great relationship, but I’m always open to new clients, new friendships and new challenges. That’s what makes this job so interesting and rewarding.

What should people know about you? Lynne Frost, owner and creative director: Our interior design company was established more than ten years ago. We work for private and commercial clients on projects large and small, and can offer a turnkey service (with an architect and a wide range of trades) if needed. We avoid following trends that will date and prefer to approach projects with the idea of creating timeless rooms with an elegant and classic contemporary style.

What has been your biggest project so far? One that stands out lasted for over two years and involved a full house refurbishment and extension in north-east Scotland. We were involved with the architect from the very beginning and managed the project to completion. We’re very proud of what we achieved there.
What are your top tips for working with an interior designer? 1. If it’s a building project, get the designer involved as early as possible. This will be more cost-effective in the long run, as you will get things right first time. 2. Start keeping images of rooms you like. These will help when we come to put ideas together. 3. Don’t be afraid to talk about money. Have a budget in mind and discuss it at the beginning so everyone knows what they’re working with. 4. Devote a portion of the budget for styling – it’s very important for finishing off a room. 5. Work with someone you get on with – you’ll be with them a lot!
What sets you apart from your competitors? We offer a personalised service and tailor each job to the needs and expectations of our client. I think people hear the words interior designer and think it will be expensive, when in fact involving a designer at the beginning will likely stop you making costly mistakes. We are very approachable, placing a great deal of emphasis on our client relationships, and are

Inspiration comes from... We spend a lot of time keeping up to date with new products from all over the world. It’s important to travel and see new things, so we make regular trips to trade shows. The internet has made it easier for clients to see so much, but unless you know how to filter this, it can become overwhelming.
What questions should a new customer ask? Ask to see a portfolio of work or perhaps to visit one of the designer’s completed projects and meet with their client. What are the challenges in your job? Some clients won’t tell you their budget upfront, but it can be very time-consuming to price a job that then doesn’t meet the client’s expectations or budget. What’s planned for the future? We have recently expanded, opening an office in Edinburgh. We’re looking forward to working with our designer there while continuing to focus on Aberdeen.

What has been your biggest project so far? One recent big project was supplying our 17th-Century Natural Oak flooring to the offices of international spirits company Edrington on the seventh floor of 100 Queen Street in Glasgow. The wide 190mm-long boards add warmth and texture to the space. What are your top tips when buying timber floors? 1. Visit our showroom to see floors in context. Wood is tactile and nothing beats seeing large panels up close. 2. Be bold – use intricate patterns like herringbone in less interesting spaces such as hallways. 3. Ask for a sample of flooring to take with you when shopping for other elements of the room. 4. Don’t overlook the detail – matching stairs and skirting can be very important to finish the look. 5. Think outside the box – floorboards can be used on internal walls and ceilings and as headboards to add warmth and texture. What questions should a new customer ask? Is the flooring PEFC-certified? (This helps to ensure that forests are managed responsibly.) What are the lead times? How easy is the floor to maintain? How do I look after it? Does the wood need to acclimatise before it is installed? Will it work with underfloor heating? What makes a project challenging? It can be tricky to co-ordinate the requirements of designer, architect, builder and homeowner in the same project to ensure everyone gets the best outcome. What’s planned for the future? We have a new flooring showroom at our head office in Newtonmore, and we are constantly researching new interior and flooring trends, attending trade shows and responding to our customers’ needs.

What should people know about your company? Gillian Sinclair, owner: We are based in Edinburgh but work for designers across the country and undertake private commissions from all over the world. I have worked in the industry for over 30 years, trading as Sinclairs for the last 18. We provide bespoke soft furnishings of the very highest standard in an efficient and cost-conscious way. What has been your biggest project to date? We recently provided all the curtains, blinds and soft furnishings for a large country house – lots of bedrooms and huge reception rooms. The job was completed on time, and on budget. What sets you apart from your competitors? We have perfected the art of making high-end products in a time-efficient manner. We help many designers with fabric choices and curtain styles. My love of history and art informs my judgement on proportion and balance, which is greatly valued by our customers who may want a modern style that is still informed by classic conventions. Inspiration comes from… Everywhere. The colours of autumn, the proportions of a Georgian townhouse, the tailoring of a tweed coat: all of these things can influence an interiors scheme.

What are your top tips when buying curtains? 1. Buy well, buy once. Invest in good quality fabrics and interlined curtains and they will look beautiful and insulate your home for over 20 years, if cared for. 2. Choose a classic cloth that will be able to withstand changes in temperature and humidity. Fabrics change due to atmosphere, just as clothing does, so it’s wise to understand their nature before you choose. Linen can swell and drop when steamed; wool may shrink. If you don’t like casual, relaxedlooking curtains, don’t choose 100% linen! 3. Consider putting an envirofilm on your windows. It will protect your fabrics from UV light and stop any sun damage to artworks and furniture. 4. Vacuum clean your curtains, front and back, once a month. Put a fine cloth barrier over the end of the vacuum head – the dust will adhere to it but the curtains won’t be pulled into the tube. What questions should a new customer ask? Ask questions about materials and methods. There are lots of ways to put the layers together and though they may look similar when hung, a wellmade set will hold together for many years. The only parts of the curtains that should be machined are when joining the widths of fabric and forming the pleats. Typically there are over 1,400 hand-stitches in a double-width curtain, most of them unseen. What’s planned for the future? The workshop has moved around Edinburgh over the years, gradually growing in size as we go. I am always on the lookout for the perfect premises; first floor, lots of natural light, warm and spacious, with a veranda or garden and a good view – perhaps a herd of wildebeest roaming majestically over the plain…
