DESIGNDIRECTORY2015
BUSINESS PROFILE
Who is Bryce McKenzie Design? The firm was founded in Edinburgh in 2008, and Bryce and his team now have two decades’ worth of experience in interior design. What is your design ethos? We listen carefully to our clients to ensure that we create a design scheme uniquely suited to them. We want them to be involved in the process and feel their home is truly theirs. We don’t have a ‘signature look’ but we do use signature techniques – the layering of textures, the use of pattern and a balanced use of colour – along with very close attention to detail and quality. Are you working on any design innovations at the moment? It’s a year since we made the move to a larger showroom in Edinburgh, meaning we can show our new designs in upholstery and cabinet furniture. The entire Bryce McKenzie furniture collection is available to view and can be made to your exact specifications. We’re the first interior design showroom in Scotland to fully house our own collection. Clients often had to travel to London to try out the right sofa – until now. We also collaborate with Michael Hart Cabinetry to present new designs. What inspires you designs? Whenever I design a room or a piece of furniture, I try to think in terms of balance and simplicity. Warmth comes from organic shapes and textures. My upholstered pieces have clean lines that make them easy to live with. And I like to introduce something unexpected or to juxtapose different 6

period styles, as the result can often be more sophisticated and stimulating than you can get by simply following convention. What is the biggest challenge in design? Working on projects at a distance. But even though it can be quite challenging, it’s ultimately very rewarding. We’ve been working on many houses this year from London to the north of Scotland. As well as being tailored to suit the client, each project has required a different approach. I love to travel and in the past the company has decorated for clients in Paris and the United States. I love to challenge my skills through accommodating all my clients’ different styles. What is unique about your company? Not only do we complete projects on time, within budget and in an uncommonly well-organised way, we frequently exceed our clients’ expectations. We produce high-quality interiors and absorb all the stress of the project, allowing the client to enjoy the process. Give us five words that sum up your business Innovative, unique, elegant, understated, quality.

BUSINESS PROFILE
What is your design ethos? To design and create harmonious living spaces that are inspired by our clients’ hopes, dreams and aspirations. Using experienced craftsmen, we build our bespoke kitchens to last a lifetime. Are you working on any design innovations at the moment? We are working on an industrial look, using engineered reclaimed flooring, stainless-steel worktops and sharp, brick-style tiling. The addition of mesh baskets and shelving, with painted wood furniture and metal pendant lighting, keeps the design to a monochrome colour palette. What inspires your designs? We are inspired by country-house style. It has a classic, timeless appeal. We also use understated colour to bring the room to life and redefine its character. To quote Nancy Lancaster, the doyenne of country-house style: “One needs light and shade, because if every piece is perfect the room becomes a museum and is lifeless.” Each client brings their own dreams to the drawing board, and through each stage of the design process we endeavour to fulfil their aspirations and create their ideal kitchen. What do you think are the biggest challenges in design? Our biggest challenges come from the largest projects, but it is often the smaller projects that 8

provide the greatest design excitement. Even when space is at a premium, clever use of innovative storage together with our considerable range of finishes means we can design a space that feels light and airy and find a way to make a dream kitchen a practical reality. What is unique about your company? Our professional designers have been creating bespoke, individually hand-crafted and modular kitchens for over 34 years. Complemented by an interior design consultancy, we can design, supply and project-manage each customer’s individual specifications from concept to completion. We offer a wide selection of natural stone, ceramic tiles and engineered wood flooring, along with Fermoie’s fabrics and the complete collection of Farrow & Ball paint and paper. Give us five words that sum up your business Inspirational Design & Timeless British Craftsmanship.

What is your design ethos? We aim to create classic, timeless, sophisticated design solutions, whatever the budget. We work closely with our clients at every stage of the project to achieve a successful outcome, and rigorous attention to detail is maintained throughout the whole process. Are you working on any design innovations at the moment? It varies from project to project. As each job’s requirements are specific, we endeavour to form individual solutions based on our extensive knowledge and experience in the residential and commercial sectors. We specialise in commissions for private clients and in creating inspirational architectural and interior design solutions. What inspires your designs? We are constantly on the lookout for inspiration and ideas for our projects, travelling to many exhibitions to source new materials and the latest products and concepts.

BUSINESS PROFILE
What is your design ethos? We look at the customer’s ideas and preferences, confirm whether it’s feasible or not according to the rough budget they had in mind, and make any suggestions that could improve the design (such as the aesthetics and a better use of space). Basically we like to work with the customer and have them visit our showroom and go over the drawings and pricing, and take it from there. The client has to be happy with the final design and the price. So we endeavour to give the client what they want, within budget.
What would you say are the biggest challenges in design? On one of our jobs this year we had a commission for a flat in Edinburgh to supply and fit a kitchen and three bathrooms, and to paint and decorate the whole property. We also had to lay solid oak flooring throughout. All this had to be done within a strict time limit of three to four weeks, while adhering to a building warrant. It helps that we employ all our own tradesmen, apart from the painter and decorator and electrician, whom we contract.
Are you working on any design innovations at the moment? We are always working on different designs for both kitchens and bathrooms. Some of our clients just want to replace the cabinet doors and worktops of their existing kitchen, which is a job we will happily undertake. Other customers are looking for the complete design of a brand new kitchen, including the supply of appliances. They will need 3D drawings, which we create using 20:20 Fusion software. Unlike many companies, we don’t charge for carrying out a design or for costing.
What is unique about your company? We are a one-stop shop. We employ all our own plumbers and joiners, so we are in control of each installation. All the accessories required can be sourced through us.
What inspires your designs? Firstly we look at the passion and the ideas the client has for their room and then we try to make it happen. We supply and fit British and German-made kitchens and bathrooms – they have their own styles and appeal to a wide audience. We cover a broad spectrum of budgets across kitchens and bathrooms, so don’t be afraid that your budget will be too small – there is no harm in checking out our showroom and going over prices or having us come out to give you an on-the-spot price for a job. 12

BUSINESS PROFILE
What is your design ethos? Whether we’re designing a kitchen, a bedroom, a living space or a study area, our main aim is to make a positive difference to the way you live your life. Great design always starts with listening and asking questions – this process allows us to paint a picture of who our client is and to understand their wishes and needs. We look at the whole space and make suggestions beyond the furniture elements, including lighting and finishes. Are you working on any design innovations at the moment? We work closely with our partners to display the latest products and finishes. Recently we installed Dekton work surfaces by Cosentino – we were the first to do so in Scotland. We installed Studio Line by Siemens, again the first to have done so. Next125 has a new range of wall-mounted kitchen furniture that will be on display in 2015. The new season finishes from our Italian suppliers are also on view. Our showroom displays are state-of-theart and carefully chosen to demonstrate the latest German and Italian designs. What inspires your designs? Much of our inspiration comes from seeing what the future holds by visiting European furniture shows in Milan and Cologne. As well as looking ahead, the past is an influence too, particularly movements like Bauhaus and architects such as Frank Lloyd Wright and Norman Foster. A common factor through much of what we do is an appreciation that ‘less is more’ and an understanding that the function the space is to serve will allow the form to develop. 14
DESIGNDIRECTORY2015
What do you think are some of the challenges of design? Generally, the smaller the room the bigger the challenge. Large rooms lend themselves to being light and airy with clean lines. Smaller rooms often need to serve the same purpose – this requires careful consideration and a clever use of space to accommodate the same functions. What is unique about your company? We think about the way a space is to be used, rather than about how to fill the space. As well as fitted furnishings, we provide complementary furniture and finishes to help complete your project. Our 5,000 sq. ft. studio in Pollokshields is carefully laid out to give a flavour of how we think and to provide inspiration. Lastly we’re accessible: we’re involved in the business day-to-day and we get to know our customers. Give us five words that sum up your business Great design needn’t be exclusive.

IAN SMITH DESIGN What is your design ethos? It’s modern but not dictated by fashion or trends. That apart, I would like to think “attention to detail and quality” is the company’s ethos and motto. Any tradesman or craftsman we employ in a commission must share our ethos to produce a design that speaks of quality and timelessness. Are you working on any design innovations at the moment? As well as designing rooms, we also come up with designs for furniture and lighting. Last year we decided to bring these and additional pieces together to create a collection, which is marketed under the name Galerie Smith and is on show in our recently opened London studio in Royal Hospital Road in Chelsea. At present we are also working on an Edinburgh townhouse which demands a respect for the original architecture. At the opposite extreme, we have been appointed as the interior designers of the new Caledonian Sleeper. Nothing could be more modern. What inspires your designs? We are inspired by an all-consuming passion for design in all its forms, and by past and present designers from Jean-Michel Frank to François Catroux. I am just as passionate and inspired by 20th-century art, sculpture and painting. What do you think are the biggest challenges in design? Meeting the client’s expectations on time is a challenge. It seems to be the nature of life that everybody wants instant interiors, but in fact the 16
DESIGNDIRECTORY2015
best interiors evolve. As well as that, suppliers have long given up carrying stock, which worsens the situation. We therefore have to source alternative suppliers continually. What is unique about your company? We like to work with the interior architecture in all our projects, not only in period properties but also in new-builds. Because it is a new-build does not necessarily mean it is practical or suitable for modern living. Some changes can make a house more relevant to modern life. Interior changes need not be grand – even the smallest change in scale can have a big impact. Give us five words that sum up your company Classic, practical, quality, contemporary style.

What is your design ethos? JAMstudio is an award-winning RIAS-chartered architectural practice based in Aberdeen. We are passionate about great design and its power to create amazing spaces, whether for a one-off family home or for an inspirational workplace. We design and arrange the construction of crisp, contemporary spaces that seamlessly blend old and new themes to allow our clients to get the best from their homes. Are you working on any design innovations at the moment? We are working on a number of low energy-use houses and have recently completed a project where the house actually generates more energy than it uses. We love to use cutting-edge, environmentally friendly materials in unusual ways. Our innovative approach has been reflected in a number of awards, both regionally and nationally, as well as in numerous recommendations from highly satisfied clients. What inspires your designs? The desire to produce really stylish architecture that, as well as being easy on the eye, is also practical and comfortable to use on a day-to-day basis. We love the use of bold colour to add interest and draw the eye to a specific design detail. We like to push what is possible within planning guidelines, and enjoy challenging projects that other architects have been afraid to take on. What are some of the challenges of design? Matching expectation and budget is the time-old difficulty for all good architects! We endeavour to 18
DESIGNDIRECTORY2015
get our clients to be realistic about what they really want at the outset and assist them in setting sensible budgets that are manageable from both sides of the table. Money is always the most contentious issue on any project, so making sure everyone involved with the project has a good grip on it at the outset is key to a successful outcome. What is unique about your company? We are truly design-led and we are not afraid to speak our minds. We believe that good design has the power to make life-changing spaces, no matter how large or small the project might be. Both directors of JAMstudio have built their own homes, so have a real understanding of the challenges of living with builders. We have a young and very driven team who are extremely creative and love the diversity of the work the practice undertakes. What is your design ethos? We strive to help our customers achieve beautiful, unique and bespoke interiors that are both comfortable and visually stunning. Our interiors are individually designed and customer-focused. Using our showroom, our clients can see the quality of the products we offer and at the same time benefit from our friendly and professional advice. We aim to respond to the client’s lifestyle, needs and aspirations, and we can also push the creative boundaries when required. Are you working on any design innovations at the moment? We like to supply unique pieces, so we are increasingly working with manufacturers that can offer bespoke, well-crafted products and can supply them at a comparable cost to productionline manufacturing styles. As well as having our furniture showroom and design studio, we are also using online technology so that our clients can get a visual update of their design as it progresses. What inspires your designs? Our designs are inspired by the high quality products we source and offer in our showroom. We travel extensively, visiting factories and exhibitions in order to constantly be inspired and to have innovative and exciting styles and products. The starting point for a design will often come from looking at the client’s needs and at what their particular space has to offer. 20
DESIGNDIRECTORY2015
What do you think are some of the challenges of design? Our biggest challenge is offering a unique style while still having mass appeal. We want to give our customers something different, so our showroom is full of distinctive furniture, lighting and accessories that are exclusive to us; we display them in themed room sets, so customers can see cohesive rooms. What is unique about your company? We are a family business that has been trading for over sixty years and we enjoy an excellent reputation in the industry. We have furnished some of the most prestigious properties in Scotland and we continue to focus on traditional customer service. Unlike most interior design businesses, we have a large showroom, so our clients can see and select the actual pieces for their home, as opposed to just looking in catalogues. The showroom is in a beautiful rural setting with knowledgeable, friendly staff and on-site parking. Give us five words that sum up your business Unique, quality, friendly, professional, evolving.

BUSINESS PROFILE
Who is Mary Leslie Interior Design? We’re an experienced Perthshire and London-based design practice that has been in business since 1997. What is your design ethos? Creating a great interior is about much more than just putting together a clever scheme. We want our clients to relax and enjoy the whole process, so we need to be creative and professional while ensuring that everyone has fun. That is the case no matter how simple or complex the project may be. We are always looking to combine contemporary and traditional techniques and are inquisitive about the new styles and technology that are out there. Are you working on any design innovations in your studio? Sustainability is key, so we like fabrics such as woven grass and bamboo for window treatments, and we try to upcycle or recycle if we can. Digital technology for fabrics and wall coverings is also very exciting. Home automation is developing fast, and integrated wifi audio-visual systems are becoming mainstream. Incorporating LED lighting into our schemes has involved a learning curve. Our latest ploy is to plant a ground-mounted solar garden for a country house. Where does your inspiration come from? Usually we find a hook in conversation with our clients and the whole flows from there. It is vital to spend time talking to clients and listening to their likes and dislikes – relaxed conversation can be very revealing. The property often dictates a certain style and an individual room might evolve round a rug or a painting. Travel, books, films and exhibitions all play their part. 22
DESIGNDIRECTORY2015
What is your biggest design challenge? I love the design element in creating a bespoke interior, so those challenges are invariably stimulating. Probably the biggest test is balancing our clients’ expectations with the limitations imposed by the property, the planners or the budget. We’ll work with whatever style is requested, but sometimes compromise is needed, which demands flexibility from all parties. This applies whatever the size of project. What is unique about your company? Our flexibility, creativity and sense of fun. We love to combine the traditional and contemporary and will happily create any combination to suit our clients, never ourselves. Give us five words that sum up your business Creative, sympathetic, flexible, experienced, professional.

What is your design ethos? At Murray & Murray we like things that last, things that are thoughtfully designed, fit for purpose and a pleasure to use. That is why we are delighted that we ourselves are still going strong 25 years after we began. A commitment to quality and service in creating handmade kitchens and interiors has seen us become one of Scotland’s leading manufacturers, trusted by architects, designers and discerning clients to deliver enduring, custom-made living spaces. Are you working on any design innovations at the moment? Perhaps our most ambitious design innovation to date has been the renovation of a rather tired children’s clothing store at 131 Bruntsfield Place into our brand new Edinburgh showroom. The dramatic transformation against a tight schedule is testament to our capabilities as well as the unwavering support of our partners. What inspires your designs? We have been extremely fortunate while renovating our new showroom to collaborate with some of brands we regard as the very best in our industry. Strathearn Stone & Timber has once again surpassed itself in delivering a stunning bespoke floor to our exact requirements. Aga and Miele have provided their contrasting yet complementary kitchen appliances. James Morrow lent expertise in audio, lighting and visuals, and Farrow & Ball supplied truly unique paints and wallpaper. 24
DESIGNDIRECTORY2015
What do you think are some of the challenges of design? The most challenging part of the showroom design was selecting a style that epitomises exactly what we do. Our portfolio is so diverse and each project is so uniquely tailored to suit the individual user that it was strange not to have that crucial component informing the design process. Instead, we took our inspiration from the character of the property and grasped the opportunity to indulge in everything that we find inspirational and aspirational. What is unique about your company? We are one of the few remaining companies that design and manufacture truly bespoke cabinetry, entirely to order, in our very own workshop in Fife. Our carefully curated collections of designer furniture, lighting and accessories have been selected to inspire and excite, whether you are a professional designer or you’re putting together a room for the very first time. Seeing so many diverse designs pushes us to use products in new and exciting ways. What inspires your collections? The Occa-Home style is based around three bespoke looks that we created when the company first began, and each of these draws inspiration from a range of different places. The cool and contemporary Urban look draws on mid-century classics and Scandinavian style; the laid-back Chic style is inspired by organic materials and elegant but relaxed shapes; and the Luxe style is created around luxurious materials and timeless, architectural designs. 26

What is your design ethos? We work closely with clients to combine our expertise with their ideas, working within their budget. We can design the interior of a whole house, or just find the single perfect product that makes the right statement for the client. Pat Renson Interiors is not a fee-driven business; instead, we incorporate our services into recommended retail prices so our clients get all our experience included in the price. Are you working on any design innovations at the moment? We are working with our furniture-maker on a range of affordable yet design-led sofas, chairs and headboards, which are of exceptional quality and have a classic and timeless style. We are also working with Scottish artist Kim Canale on a range of affordable limited-edition art aimed at the interiors market, which will be distributed through our website in 2015. In addition, we are collaborating with a flooring supplier on a range of trend-led wooden flooring. What inspires your designs? The colours of the Scottish countryside and seascape inspire me. I also love neutral colours with a splash of colour. An interior is like music – it should be calming, comforting and remind you of happy times. My greatest inspiration still comes from my former employer and friend, the late Dame Anita Roddick, whose philosophy ‘Retail is Detail’ 28
DESIGNDIRECTORY2015
is exactly the same philosophy that we apply to our interior projects. What do you think are the biggest challenges in design? The biggest challenge can be interpreting exactly what the client wants, so that you maximise the impact of the final project. Fortunately, this is the part that I enjoy the most, and it is very rewarding for the client to feel they have made a significant contribution to the process. Attention to detail is crucial, as is maintaining a very close working relationship with each and every client. We are selective in our suppliers, being the chosen design company in Scotland to supply such worldrenowned brands as Vitra, Sancal and Zanotta among many others. Successful interior design thrives on individuality and we strive to ensure each customer receives a bespoke solution that reflects their own personal style. Are you working on any design innovations at the moment? Our team travel internationally to procure innovative pieces to add to our already impressive collection. Our passion for design means that we are always on the lookout for creative new concepts. We recently viewed the new collection at Bonaldo’s showroom near Venice. As a result, we have introduced several of Bonaldo’s pioneering pieces into our own design showroom. This is just one example of the quality and unique nature of the pieces which our customers can hope to see when they visit us. What inspires your designs? We are constantly inspired by nature, fashion and art. And there are endless ways in which our inspiration can be gathered. For example, visits to a customer’s home, a meeting with a customer in our showroom, or a visit to a supplier or a trade show. We are highly responsive to our customers’ tastes. We encourage them to be creative, and our approachable manner ensures that each customer feels comfortable describing their design aspirations to us. We take this vision and make it a reality. 30
DESIGNDIRECTORY2015
What do you think are some of the challenges of design? One of the biggest challenges we face is to strike the right balance between our love of minimalist and contemporary design and the customer’s need for comfort and practicality. Many customers will wish to purchase products simply to display them in their home as a showpiece. However, we strive to be able to fulfil this aesthetic while also creating a comfortable living space. Our suppliers are able to provide us with a range of quality products which can be customised to suit each customer’s individual needs. What is unique about your company? WB Jamieson provides a unique service in that we can control the quality of our end-product from concept to completion. We have an on-site production space and have our own skilled team of tradesmen, which ensures that each stage of our design process is completed to an impeccable standard. We have one of the most comprehensive collections of contemporary furniture, fabrics, flooring, lighting and wallpaper in Scotland. Our company was established more than 32 years ago and is constantly evolving. Give us five words that sum up your business Quality, innovative, creative, responsive and personal.

here is a sunburst of colour available in the next few months’ says Jan McNab of The Rug Rooms. ‘Floral designs remain in abundance, but with a twist. In place of the familiar bold stroke colour palettes we can look forward to a gentle, soft look - almost reflecting delicate watercolor paintings. ‘Well recognised designer names like Sanderson and William Morris are introducing designs to complement their wall coverings and beautiful fabrics. As well as the floral designs they offer a selection of softer abstract looks which use the same tonings but are always so versatile and suit most styles of home. ‘I find it thrilling to see rug manufacturers moving away from the more tried and tested, formulaic and predictable. It shows there is a real move towards creating a more innovative collection of floor coverings which offer a wide choice of statement pieces for your room. Gone are the days when rugs were a reluctant purchace for hiding a stain on the carpet. A rug is now often the item in the room which sets the mood, offering a sense of style together with the cosiness we all love. ‘I take pride in the fact I choose each rug we stock personally. I listen to our client’s requests, which are often supported with specific fabrics or wallpaper, and use that as my shopping list whenever I’m on a shopping trip. I really enjoy finding something a bit different to display and hopefully the end result is that The Rug Rooms offer ‘Rugs Less Ordinary’. ‘I’m also really looking forward to developing our bespoke service as I’m now working directly with a manufacturer who offers this facility at extremely competitive prices. This is great news as a lot of clients are coming in to colourmatch their favourite Farrow and Ball paints from their large showroom nearby on Great Western Road.’
