What’s special about the company? Designworks is an interior design-led practice supported by an in-house architectural team operating from its showroom and offices on Gibson Street in the west end of Glasgow. Clients are provided with an inclusive interior design and architectural service dealing with residential and commercial projects throughout the UK and abroad. What inspires your designs and choices? We are constantly on the lookout for inspiration and ideas for our projects, travelling far and wide to exhibitions to review new materials, the latest products and new design concepts. We also source inspiration from interior and architectural journals and the internet. Who are your customers? As well as clients who may pop into the showroom to purchase furniture, flooring, lighting, fabric, wallpaper and accessories or even a small gift, our clients are varied, from residential to commercial to corporate who typically engage us to work on their projects, many of whom have given us repeat business over the last 30-plus years. 6
What is the company’s background? Designworks’ Director Henrietta Simpson founded the business in 1982, opening the first showroom in Gibson Street. Henrietta’s husband joined the business in 1989 as Designworks’ architect and he was later followed by their daughters (both designers). The Designworks Design Team has expanded to a total of seven qualified designers, which includes two generations of the Simpson family. What is the key to success? Designworks’ attention to detail and the combined experience the Design Team ensures that clients receive the best possible designs tailored to meet their individual project needs. The Design Team’s experience enables them to work on a variety of different interior and architectural projects of differing scales and challenges.

What’s special about the company? It’s an independent family business, established in the south side of Glasgow. The statement that best sums us up is ‘Great Design Needn’t be Exclusive’. We aim to provide great design, high quality and exceptional value. Our experienced designers are all very knowledgeable. They are interested in you and in making a positive difference to the way you live your life. This approach makes us special. What inspires your designs and choices? Much of our inspiration comes from visiting European furniture and design shows in London, Milan and Cologne. As well as looking ahead, the past is an influence too, particularly the likes of the Bauhaus movement. Architects such as Frank Lloyd Wright and Zaha Hadid also provide inspiration. A common factor of what we do is an appreciation that ‘less is more’ and an understanding that the function the space is to serve will allow the form to develop. Who are your customers? We have a varied clientele from young couples looking to furnish their first home, all the way through to ‘downsizers’. One thing all our customers have in common is an appreciation of excellent design, good value and exceptional quality. 10
What is the company’s background? The last couple of years have seen our studio double in size to 5,000 sq feet, and at the beginning of 2015 we introduced a full interior design service offering many leading brands of wallpapers, fabrics and furniture. As well as our interior designer, we now have a further three full-time designers working out of our studio in Haggs Road. What is the key to success? If we can ensure that your journey has been a positive experience, we have done our job properly. Our designs and our products need to be robust and continue to provide complete satisfaction long after we have finished the project. Being transparent in our dealings and communicating well are fundamentals. Getting these three areas consistently right is key to our success and our growth.

What is the company’s background? Houseology’s roots are in the architectural and interior design practice Occa-Design, founded by Kate in 2003. She became aware of the uncertainty that her clients felt when making design decisions and set out to demystify the process, opening up her design studio to the digital world and making sourcing and buying beautiful homewares available to everyone. We have a lot of residential customers around the Gleneagles area, we do work for a large house-builder in Scotland, and we’re currently working on several exciting new ventures: a restaurant in Dundee opposite 16
the Duncan of Jordanstone Art College; a large residential property in the grounds of Gleneagles; and a hotel in the Angus glens. What is the company’s background? The company has been going for 12 years now and has grown fast in a relatively short period of time. Our client base has expanded and our range of suppliers is vast and varied, with everything from French design houses to Mulberry, Ralph Lauren and Colefax, and with a wide base of suppliers for lighting, furniture, furnishings and wallcoverings. What is the key to success? The key to success is attention to detail in everything we do, whether that’s supply and manufacture or the delivery of goods on time and to budget. After serving a four-year apprenticeship and following many years spent working in a specialist manufacturing joinery environment, Steven Burgess opened a small pine shop in Arnprior in 1996. The business has changed radically since then and has evolved into one of Scotland’s premier furniture showrooms and interior design studios. Recently launched is the new interior design and sofa studio, which is a natural development of the business. Clients are ordering bespoke items of furniture including kitchens crafted in beautiful wood then requesting advice on interior design – decor, wallcoverings, soft furnishings, upholstery, flooring, feature lighting – all to provide a stunning final result.
