Bell boost BELL Equipment UK has invested heavily in its workshop capability with the opening of a new service and maintenance centre following "unprecedented growth" in the past 12 months. At the same time, the firm has brought its service back in-house covering England and Wales, leaving United Plant Services to continue to support Bell machines in Scotland's Central Belt. The new facility in Burton-on-Trent consists of four workshop bays for machine repairs and refurbishment, along with a 15,000 square foot yard giving Bell extra space to house its articulated dump trucks and wheeled loaders prior to dispatch. Managing director Nick Learoyd said, "During the recession, it was understandable that companies 'made do' with existing plant and equipment, but the greater confidence we are seeing now means that orders are at an alltime high."

Brexit concerns for construction sector

Industry leans towards staying

Don delay BALFOUR Beatty and Aberdeen City Council have agreed a further eight-week extension for the £22.3 million Third Don Crossing project. The extension was necessary due to "problems with weather, re-routing underground utilities and unforeseen circumstances". Neil Cooper, the council's communities, housing and infrastructure convener said, "This is Aberdeen's largest major new bridge infrastructure since the construction of the Queen Elizabeth Bridge 30 years ago and projects of this size are technically complex. "While we recognise how frustrating these delays are for people, it must be remembered this is a major project which includes two bridges, creating a new road, re-alignment of existing roads, creating cycle paths, and pavements."

Fleet sale A-Plant has snapped up the portable accommodation fleet of NG Bailey. Additionally, APlant Accommodation has become the sole supplier of this product range to NG Bailey. A-Plant said the move is in line with the company's strategy to grow its product offering. Ian Needham, A-Plant's director of accommodation said, "We are delighted with this agreement, their fleet complements our existing products perfectly, combined with our extended range and national coverage we're able to offer a first-rate portable accommodation service to NG Bailey."

NEW research has revealed almost a third of Scotland’s construction employers believe leaving the EU would have a negative impact on their business. Only 8% of those surveyed believe Britain leaving the EU would impact positively on them while more than 40% think the impact would be neutral. A further 20% “remain unsure” what the impact would be. These are the findings of the latest Scottish Construction Monitor, a quarterly survey of the membership of the Scottish Building Federation (SBF). With the EU referendum set for June 23, the latest survey asked a series of timely questions about Scottish construction firms' level of exposure to the European Union. Only 23% of firms said they employ labour from other EU countries. One third said they procure goods and services from other EU countries while a tiny 6% of businesses said they export to other EU countries. SBF members were asked to judge the likely impact on their business if the UK left the European Union. The most popular answer was "neutral" with more than one in five answering "don't know". However, approximately four times as many thought the impact of Brexit on their business would be negative as those who thought the UK leaving the EU would be positive. Project Plant April/June 2016

2

Vaughan Hart, Scottish Building Federation managing director said, "The responses we've received to the questions related to the EU referendum suggest there is limited interest in or enthusiasm for the European Union amongst construction employers. The results also show that the industry's level of exposure to the European Union is far more limited than might be the case for certain other industries. The most significant relationship building companies have with other EU countries appears to be through their supply chain. "But out of the minority of building companies responding who think the UK leaving the EU would have an impact on their business, four times as many think this impact would be negative as those who think Brexit would be good for their business. More generally, a further drop in industry confidence this quarter adds weight to the view that 2016 looks set to be a challenging year for the Scottish economy. "For its part, SBF will not involve itself in the forthcoming referendum campaign. But I would observe that it is perhaps this growing sense of uncertainty about the economic outlook which explains why, on balance, our members are leaning marginally towards a preference for remaining in the European Union when the referendum takes place in June."

Upwardly mobile: AB2000 snaps up six Liebherr cranes AB2000 has taken delivery of six new Liebherr cranes, taking the total number of mobile cranes in its fleet to 14. The deal involves five all-terrain mobile cranes and one compact mobile crane. The all-terrain cranes are the LTM 1040-2.1, LTM 1095-5.1, LTM 1130-5.1 and two LTM 1070-4.2s. These replace older Terex Demag cranes which have been sold. AB2000 also purchased one LTC 1050-3.1 compact crane, which is a new model type for its fleet. Bill Marsh, AB2000's general manager said, "We chose Liebherr cranes for their good residual values, excellent back-up fleet service, build quality and reliability." Liebherr describes the LTM 1040-2.1 as a compact 2-axle mobile crane with both axles driven and steerable ensuring "excellent" all-terrain capability and manoeuvrability on even the most confined sites. The 35m long, continuously variable 4-section telescopic boom uses a hydro-mechanical telescoping system to extend to the required length quickly and the telescoping operation can also be performed under load. The 70 tonne LTM 1070-4.2 is said to carry most of its counterweight in its road travelling configuration, which Liebherr says makes it immediately ready for operation on site. The 5-axle LTM 1095-5.1 mobile crane re-

portedly has the longest telescopic boom in its class. In the UK, this 95 tonne crane can be run with an axle load of 16.5 tonnes, which enables it to carry all 23 tonnes of its ballast and still be within legal limits for travel on roads. The LTM 1130-5.1 has a long telescopic boom at 60m with a 14m telescopic boom extension and a 19m folding fly jib.

Liebherr says the purchase of the LTC 10503.1 compact city crane, the first crane of its type in the AB2000 fleet, opens up a "whole new range of projects" for the firm. Its singleoperator elevating cabin gives the operator a "great view of the lifting area" making it more suited than other cranes to working on the dockyard loading ships, for example, as it has a better view of the cargo hold.

Yarwoods to supply Hartl buckets in UK YARWOODS Excavator Attachments Ltd has secured a deal to supply Hartl excavator crusher buckets and screener buckets to the UK market. The Airdrie-based firm has put in place a sales, service and stocking facility of Hartl products to carry out in-house servicing and repairs. Yarwoods has also committed to a training programme for their service engineers and sales staff. Henry Brain, managing director of Yarwoods Excavator Attachments, explained, "We have run crusher buckets in our hire fleet for over five years now. "We and our customers very much believe in the concept of crusher buckets and importantly, where and when they are suited. "We are convinced that the Hartl distributorship

will now mean we can take that concept the next stage further with what we believe is a more reliable and better performing product. "Apart from the obvious improvement in build quality, we found that the Hartl crusher buckets have a number of technical advantages over the competition, the primary Project Plant April/June 2016

BREEDON Aggregates has posted pre-tax profits of £31.3 million for the year ended 31 December 2015 - an increase of 46.4%. Revenue is also up 18.1% to £318.5 million. Executive chairman, Peter Tom, described the outlook for the business as "encouraging". "2015 was another significant year for Breedon," he said. "Our trading performance continued to improve and we again reported record results. We finalised our largest ever contract win and announced the planned acquisition of Hope Construction Materials. We are tremendously excited by the future potential for this business. "The Government remains committed to infrastructure investment and all the relevant forecasting bodies predict modest but sustained growth in construction

output over the next few years. This means a steady growth in demand for our products. Against this background, volumes are expected to recover gradually to pre-recession levels by 2020. "We begin an exciting new era in 2016 with the planned acquisition of Hope and we look forward to the future with confidence." The contract win referred to, worth £55 million, is to supply and lay asphalt for the Aberdeen Western Peripheral Route in partnership with Whitemountain Quarries Limited. Breedon said this deal will help to underpin the performance of the Scottish business for the next two years. Breedon also opened a new asphalt plant at Daviot Quarry near Inverness, one of the largest capital investments the firm has made in Scotland.

WACKER Neuson reported a rise in revenue for 2015 but has issued a cautious revenue and earnings outlook for 2016. Revenue at the light and compact construction equipment manufacturer rose 7.1% to 81.38 billion, thanks to a strong first half of 2015. However, the situation "declined markedly" in the second half of the year, with revenue just 0.7% higher than the prior-year level. Wacker Neuson said the slump in the raw materials industry impacted key markets in Brazil, Chile, Russia, South Africa, Canada, the US and Australia. Pre-tax profit is down 24% to 8104 million with the firm saying earnings were "negatively impacted by the situation in crisis-hit

emerging markets and industries as well as by increasing pressure on prices and margins". Cem Peksaglam, CEO of Wacker Neuson SE said, "Unfortunately, the weak growth in Q4 2015 continued into the first weeks of 2016. The agricultural and energy sectors are still distressed and we do not expect this situation to improve permanently in the coming months. "In North America, we do not expect to see any significant growth impetus until the second half of the year at the earliest due to the oil and gas crisis, which is having a negative impact on the light and compact construction equipment business. In Europe, the picture for 2016 is more positive for us, at least in the construction sector."

Emissions possible Is regulation misalignment hindering long-term equipment development?

Six months ago, Greater London construction sites dominated the national media agenda after introducing new regulations banning the use of ageing plant machinery. Under EU Directive 97/68/EC, development projects would no longer be able to use equipment predating 2011, ensuring that all non-road mobile machinery (NRMM) met – as a minimum – Stage IIIA emissions standards. Whilst reducing emissions is nothing new, the area is becoming an essential part of product R&D for the world’s leading equipment manufacturers. However, multiple global standards for regulation are seemingly creating unnecessary cost and complexity in the supply chain. Here, Mark Royse, product manager – site dumpers and compaction rollers at Terex Construction, explains how dovetailing timescales could support manufacturer R&D and lead to benefits for those buying or renting compact construction equipment. AS a global manufacturer with more than 60 years' experience in the site dumper marketplace, we've seen our fair share of legislation and regulation changes. However, for manufacturers like Terex, which are looking to innovate as well as meet their compliance commitments, the inconsistency of both the EU and EPA requirements can prove somewhat challenging. The cost of engineering solutions with a high degree of technical differentiation for different markets can become cost prohibitive in the relatively low volume, low margin off-highway equipment sector. What's more, end users in unregulated markets, understandably, don't want to fund the development work for a product that has a technical specification beyond their needs – a catch 22 scenario. REGULATED MARKETS Taking a step back for a minute, the EPA Tier regulations govern diesel exhaust emissions for the US market, while Stage is rel-

evant for the EU. Despite many similarities in these standards, there are some key differences in relation to power-banded emissions rating and the legislation roll-out calendar. For power-banded emissions rating as an example, in the EU, engines below 37kW only have to

meet Stage III standards. In contrast, machines below 56kW in the US need to meet Tier 4 Final standards. This creates a high level of technical difference in products between these two major markets. Coupled to this, unregulated markets cannot always be ser-

viced by solutions designed for the EU or EPA markets. The second difference provides an even bigger opportunity for discussion. While the Tier and Stage requirements are broadly the same, i.e. Tier 3 is mostly Continued on p10

Continued from p8 equivalent to Stage 3, there are differences to emissions ratings in the same power banding as highlighted above. This difference becomes compounded when enforcement timescales are not aligned. While Europe is finalising standards that will enforce Stage V in 2019/20, including the introduction of a new limit for particulate number emissions, there is currently no corresponding plan for an equivalent Tier 5 roll-out in the US. THE SMALLEST DIFFERENCE Of course, for the end user, there is seemingly little need to be con-

cerned. This is, rightly, seen as a challenge for manufacturers to overcome. However, when companies, like Terex, want to innovate and develop the best products for market – all while remaining costeffective and delivering value to the end user – this multiplicity of standards can lead to unnecessary expense in the supply chain and a lack of choice in the marketplace. A good example of this is around some of the smaller dumper models, three tonnes and under. With 95% of the site dumper market only requiring Stage III standards for these model sizes, the development cost to introduce engines to meet

Tier 4 Final standards for the US marketplace is not necessarily in line with the potential sales volume. Therefore, customers in the US may lose out in not having products made available if manufacturers cannot justify the costs of development. Conversely, if the manufacturer does look at development, then end users in Europe and the ROW could find themselves footing the R&D bill for the tougher US standards through increased overall unit prices. THE SOLUTION? So, what’s the answer? End users clearly want the most efficient, cost-effective and emissionscompliant machinery. Likewise, the wider global conversations around air quality and pollutionrelated deaths means that emissions will continue to feature heavily on the development agenda. However, the development costs of moving to a variety of new standards every few years have to be covered somewhere. The likelihood is that the end user will have to bear at least some of the brunt.

Project Plant April/June 2016

10

Looking to the future, legislators have a clear opportunity to bring the main global standards in line. With one global legislation covering all marketplaces, or at least a commonality in terms of introduction dates and emissions rating for equivalent power bands, the focus can then shift even further onto innovation. For example, let's say both Stage 5 and Tier 5 for all engine sizes were to be introduced in 2020; this would enable manufacturers to effectively invest in developing engine technologies to maximise R&D expenditure. WHY DOES THIS MATTER? While manufacturers would see a consistent development cycle worldwide, there are also key benefits for the end user. With an even more efficient engine, which sees the development cost spread across all global markets and product ranges, the end user can get access to the most cost-effective product. Likewise, when it comes to exporting and managing the residual markets, there is a much greater opportunity to source and sell product in the markets that offer the greatest potential return.

interview

Getting to know... THERE'S not much Peter Yarwood hasn’t seen in over four decades in the plant industry. From his early days in the family business to taking the bold decision to go out on his own, Peter has been involved with a number of premium brands and turned Yarwoods into one of the country's top hire, sales and repair firms for excavator attachments. With major changes happening in the business, Peter tells Gary Moug about a career in plant, the characters he's met and how he came to be shot at following one particularly memorable deal‌ Q) What's your background? A) I left college and worked for my dad Eric (co-founder of the ECY Group) for a couple of months, had two accidents in their vans and they decided I was best learning somewhere else! I got a job as an apprentice fitter with Buckton Contractors in Oldham and served my time there. I was one of the first people to do a City and Guilds plant fitter course. My claim to fame at Bucktons was that I was the only person who could reverse an onion/Cpat scraper box into the workshop with an ERF unit. Being an apprentice was good fun, the guys used to take the mickey out of me. One of my endearing memories was spending lunchtime outside a pub on the high street where they'd chained me to a lamppost! Q) What's the history of Yarwoods? A) I came to Scotland in 1977 to start ECY Scotland Limited for the family. That only lasted about five years because I then decided to get out the family business for various reasons so I bought that business off them and started Pater Yarwood Ltd. At that time we were a distributor for Montabert hydraulic hammers. Within a year we also took on the ESCO wearparts ground engaging tool franchise. We then piled on more stuff, as you do, until you realise the agencies that make you money are the ones you sometimes spend less time on because you try

to bring others on and make them work. We took on products we thought we could sell and wasted a lot of time on them instead of concentrating on what was selling. In some cases we were ahead of our time. We sold demolition processors, which we are now hiring, which have been asleep for 15-20 years. We resigned the Montabert distributorship and started to import Rammer hammers into the UK for the first time. Rammer specialised in big hammers at the time so that was a good area to work in. Bill McFadyen gave us our first break with Rammer on the Luss bypass. Rammer then bought another hammer manufacturer and doubled their range, but we didn't like the way it was stacking up. We liked where we were before so we spoke to Rammer and introduced them to somebody else who would take the hammer agency on. We just bought some hammers for ourselves and went into hiring. ESCO had been growing and our sales to the opencast industry meant it was building into a real business by now. We had pretty much all the opencast in England and together with the two biggest granite quarries - Glensanda and Mount Sorrel we became a big player in the ESCO market. interview Continued from p14

and fabrication business, which went bust. We took on their guys and started doing welding and fabrication. We built buckets for the construction industry but there wasn't much money in it due to the number of people doing it, but we had contacts via ESCO in the mines and in dredging so we set off after that market and had some fantastic business. But it was up and down and we closed that side of things down when the financial downturn came. We were approached by Toku at that point. We'd been out of selling hammers for years and were a bit reluctant to take on something else. We went to Japan to take a look and I immediately loved the product. We started to import Toku, which has served us very well ever since. Q) What does the future hold? A) Peter Yarwood Ltd is now closed. There is a new company called Yarwoods Excavator Attachments Ltd, which started trading on February 1. Henry Brain is my new business partner who has bought into the business. It has a good financial base and has my attention for five years, at which point Henry will buy me out. I'm planning to work a couple of days a week and Henry is the managing director. Q) What have been your most memorable and challenging moments? A) Doing business with Donald Malcolm was always good fun and something I'd look forward to. He was a great character, sat there behind his desk with the cigar going. He was a great guy who didn't mince his words. Our first order from Van Oord for a 34-metre bucket was also memorable. In terms of challenges, telling my dad I wanted out of the family business was tough. He took it very well and respected it but I knew he wasn't happy. Another challenge was when we sold a big bucket and forks to a customer in Angola. The country was involved in a civil war at the time. There was a problem so I travelled out there and got picked up at the airport. On our way from the airport to the ex-pat camp we got shot at. I don't know if he was shooting at us or somebody else but all we saw was the muzzle flash and heard the bang. The driver shot off down the street. Scottish coal going bust was bad and we struggled to make money that year. We knew it was happening and it was like we watched it in slow motion but could only try to manage the damage limitation.

Q) How has the industry changed since you first started? A) It's more professional. It's becoming sanitised. We are having to work in more regulated parameters. Don't get me wrong, I'm the number one advocate for working safely and doing things correctly but I just have this concern that we are maybe doing a little bit too much in some instances. This may be a bit controversial but if you train people and take danger out of a situation, how do people recognise it when they're faced by it? It's like taking antibiotics. You lose your self-defence to so many different things and I get concerned about that. We're building machines so well now that half the guys repairing them don't have a clue how the engines and systems work. How do we deal with that? Q) What would you change about the sector if you could? A) I feel sometimes the industry is all a bit aggressive and short-term. There are lots of people who fall on the right side of the line, and lots who fall on the wrong side. We're trying to be a professional industry so treat people the same way. If you make an appointment to see somebody, be there when he turns up. If I travel 400 miles to see someone and he's not there because he's forgotten or can't be bothered, I feel let down. By the same token, if you're going to see someone, have something to say and something to sell. Sell what you've got, not just your price. Project Plant April/June 2016

16

Q) Any funny anecdotes? A) Loads. At my first CMPE dinner dance at Glasgow's Central Hotel, I had to get up early because I promised Adam Bruce that we would fix a hose on one of his hammers. I got to bed at 3am, up again at 6.30am, fixed the hose, came back to the hotel for breakfast and Bob Lawrie and a couple of other guys were still on the Black Label in the lounge, so I joined them for one! That's what happened in those days – late 70s/ early 80s. Billy Bain used to work for us and went to sell Martyn Ward a hammer. He told me the next day that part of the deal was that he had to take one of Martyn's collie pups! To add insult to injury, the dog was sick in the car! Q) How do you relax when you're not working? A) Eating, drinking, golf. I used to be a bit of a petrol head and still am to some extent. I sail and ski when I'm abroad. Last year I built my own house in Strathaven. We fell in love with the site. There wasn't a house there but there was planning permission for one. We didn't like the plans so drew our own up and built it. What we've got now is a huge landscaping job, which is a work in progress. Q) What can we expect from you at ScotPlant this year? A) We'll be announcing a new franchise and making a big noise about the new company. And more of the same.

news Crane firm fined after fatalities FALCON Crane Hire has been fined ÂŁ750,000 for safety failings following the deaths of two men when a crane collapsed in London. Southwark Crown Court heard crane operator Jonathan Cloke (37) died after falling from the crane as it collapsed at a housing development in Battersea in 2006. It fell onto Michael Alexa (23), a member of the public, who was also killed. The court heard how sections of the tower crane separated when 24 bolts failed due to metal fatigue. The bolts were a safety feature on the crane's slew ring, which connected the mast to the slew turret. This allows the arms of the crane to rotate through 360 degrees. When the bolts failed the slew turret and jib separated from the mast and fell to the ground. An HSE probe found Falcon Crane Hire did not investigate a similar incident which happened nine weeks before, when the bolts failed on the same crane and had to be replaced. HSE found the firm had an inadequate system to manage inspection and maintenance of their cranes. Their process to investigate the underlying cause of components' failings was also inadequate. It told the court the particular bolts were a safety critical part of the crane. The court also heard the bolts failing previously was an exceptional and significant occurrence, which should have been recognised by Falcon Crane Hire.

Balloo seals landmark deal BALLOO Hire has taken delivery of the first Manitou 200ATJ access platform in Northern Ireland. Balloo Hire is one of the largest plant, tool, site accommodation and equipment hire companies in the region and Manitou telehandlers have been a mainstay of their hire

fleet over many years. Twelve ATJ rough terrain articulated platforms have been purchased by the firm. The purchases are a mix of three separate models - the 160ATJ 16 metre work height model, the 18 metre 180ATJ and the 200ATJ 20 metre platform.

Slimlite Soldiers proving their worth

Formwork investment supports bypass plans LEADA Acrow has spent almost ÂŁ250,000 in new formwork equipment - and put most of it straight out on hire to the Aberdeen bypass project. The Aberdeen Western Peripheral Route/Balmedie to Tipperty project is at the heart of the Scottish Government's plans to improve transport in Aberdeen and across the north east of Scotland. The latest investment involves Slimlite Soldiers, which Leada Acrow say are designed to be an economic high strength backing member for all formwork applications. Constructed

from high-grade galvanised steel yet still lightweight, they are said to allow ties to be fitted at any position and the construction of almost any configuration. Spliced end to end, they can be constructed to any desired length. Barry Furlong, direc-

tor of Leada Acrow explained, "Slimlite Soldiers are extremely popular items and we have made this investment to support the Aberdeen Western Peripheral Route/Balmedie to Tipperty project. Slimlite Soldiers allow the desired concrete finish to

be achieved without the need for ties to be moved or for sheets to be resized, presenting an economical and efficient formwork solution." The Aberdeen project has offered up some technical challenges. "On this project, the longer than normal span of the Waler Beam proved to be a challenge for our engineering teams, however to overcome this the use of Super A-Beam was incorporated. "Due to their superior strength and effective depth this allowed us to control deflections and meet the required specification."

Aggregates recycling rising THE level of aggregates recycling is growing, according to new research. Around 45 million tonnes of aggregates were recycled at processing plants in 2015, says marketing specialist, BDS Marketing Research Ltd. Recycled aggregates now represent an estimated 20% of the total aggregates market in Great Britain. These conclusions form part of the BDS Directory of Aggregates Recycling Plants which Project Plant April/June 2016

18

lists all known operations in the country. BDS has identified around 650 plants, operated by 460 companies. BDS director, Andy Sales said, "Some of the aggregates recycling plants now produce over 300,000 tonnes a year. This sort of volume is higher than many sand and gravel pits. Most construction and demolition waste will be reused at the building site. Where this is not possible, most waste will then be sent to a recycling plant."

Jarvie shows faith in Aberdeen market Decline in oil prices fails to dampen firm's expansion plans JARVIE Plant Group has shrugged off the recent downturn in Aberdeen's economy and shown its commitment to the city by opening a new depot in the area. The purpose-built facility on the East Tullos Industrial Estate opened following a short period of redevelopment. The project included office and workshop refurbishments as well as preparing the yard to accommodate the range of equipment which will be maintained at the facility.

David Jarvie

The Aberdeen depot

The Grangemouth-based firm acquired the 1.5 acre site midway through last year and said a total

of 10 to 15 jobs will be created. David Jarvie, business development director, said, "Aberdeen has been suffering with the fall in oil price which has had knock on consequences, but we view it as a city with a strong business undercurrent which will recover. "The extension of our depot network is an exciting development for us and we are confident it will be well received by our target market of housebuilders, contractors and local authorities." The depot is the firm's eighth in Scotland and follows a "substantial scaling up" of the company's activities. Project Plant reported in February that the Group was also making a major investment in permanent premises in Dundee. Over the past year staff numbers across the group have risen to 150 with several new jobs created to support the firm's expansion plans. Jarvie said turnover in the last financial year has grown by 15% to ÂŁ15 million supported by in-

creased capital expenditure in new hire equipment, people and premises. The company is currently involved in the high-profile Aberdeen bypass project where it is supplying equipment and machinery to the construction consortium involving Balfour Beatty, Carillion and Galliford Try. Stuart Granton, Jarvie Plant's finance director, added, "Our investment in our Aberdeen depot further underlines our commitment to providing our customers with a wide range of plant, vehicles and accommodation for hire." Jarvie's sister company, JP Vehicle Rentals, is also expanding after investing in over 200 new vehicles, including highly specified welfare vans, described as being ideal for greenfield sites, taking the fleet to over 40. "We're seeing huge opportunity for growth which is why we are steadily building a strategic network of depots across Scotland," Mr Jarvie added.

CPA opts for life in the fast lane LEWIS Hamilton's brother Nicolas will host the 4th annual Stars of the Future Plant Mechanic Apprentice Awards. The CPA (Construction Plant-hire Association) announced the BTCC (British Touring Car Championship) star would host the event at Haydock Park in June, which recognises talented youngsters on plant mechanic apprentice schemes. Nic has Cerebral Palsy and up until the age of 16, relied on the use of a wheelchair. But with motorsports in his blood, he was determined to pursue a career in motor racing and the CPA said he is a prime example of 'you can do anything if you put your mind to it' – making him the perfect host for this event. The CPA said the Stars of the Future awards recognise and reward outstanding apprentices who not only bring ability and commitment to their learning and their work, but who possess additional capabilities that mark them out for not only being the foundations of the future of the industry, but also potential leaders. "These youths are our industry's fu-

ture and should be recognised as such" said CPA safety & training manager, Haydn Steele. "With the support from CPA and other supporting companies we can give these apprentices a head start and the confidence to rise to new challenges and tackle the ever changing technologies involved in our industry."

CPA director Kevin Minton added, "The apprentices that enter the Stars of the Future competition are at the start of their career, and they will play a crucial role in not just this industry, but UK plc as a whole. The young engineers have a vital role to play in shaping the UK economy."

New Paisley base to serve survey needs CONSTRUCTION union UCATT has slammed the lack of newly qualified apprentices entering the construction industry. On National Apprenticeship Week, the union claimed UK construction apprenticeship completion levels have "flat-lined" at around 8,500 despite new figures revealing 22,496 apprentices "started" courses this year. UCATT said the only figure that has any value is the numbers that finish the courses. Brian Rye, acting general secretary of UCATT, said, "We need almost 50,000 new entrants every year to sustain ourselves. Less than 20 per cent of that – 8,000 apprentices – is not enough. The UK construction industry needs to address the reality of the situation and start training many more new apprentices."

HIRE specialist A-Plant has opened a new Survey Hire Express centre in Paisley. The firm said the centre, which is situated just just five minutes from Glasgow Airport, has been developed to effectively serve Scotland with the latest survey instruments. A-Plant revealed almost £1 million has been invested in new equipment such as Robotic Total Stations, GPS and Machine Control along with "hi-tech servicing and calibration equipment, brand new delivery vehicles and an experienced team of survey professionals". Service centre manager Stephen Noble will head up the team. He said, "Despite being a new location we've got a really experienced operation, there is over 60 years' sur-

vey hire experience amongst the team. We have worked for leading manufacturers and suppliers such as Korec, Sitech, Pentax and Leica. "At Survey Hire Express our biggest advantage over our competitors is that we've very much adopted the multi-brand approach, offering our customers a range of brands such as Trimble, Topcon, Leica and Spectra. "Whatever our customers want we have the survey solution for them, including the latest in 3D machine control systems. We also repair, calibrate and service all makes and models of surveying equipment and we hold a large selection of spares ready to be distributed across Scotland." Survey Hire Express has eight locations across Great Britain.

Safety at the heart of Hewden swoop Hire firm buys 50 models in £2.5m deal HEWDEN has snapped up 50 JCB skid steer and compact track loaders in a deal worth £2.5 million. JCB said the deal for the JCB 155 and 205T tracked models was secured thanks to the health and safety benefits of the 'Power Boom' design of the skid steer range, which allows operators to enter the cab through a large side door rather than climbing over potentially dangerous attachments at the front. Attachments including augers, pallet forks, shovels,

B

trencher, waste grapple, patch planner, sweeper collector, brush cutter, landscape power rake and breakers were also included in the deal. Hewden CEO Adrian Murphy said, "We believe in having the latest and newest technology to meet our clients' exacting demands. "We were impressed with JCB's design of its skid steer and compact tracked loader range and the health and safety benefits it offers. "Having a side-door entry point is just common sense

and sets the standard for the industry. "Beyond that is the versatility of the equipment: it enables our hire customers to deploy the equipment in a range of challenging environments." JCB CEO Graeme Macdonald added, "This order is very significant for JCB and we are delighted that such a major hirer as Hewden recognises the unique health and safety benefits of the JCB skid steer range." The machines have been supplied through dealer Gunn JCB.

GAP takes on leading role GAP Hire Solutions was invited to join the A-List at this year's British Academy Film Awards (BAFTA) in London. The firm provided event equipment at the annual event, which was attended by many of Hollywood's most famous movie stars including Leonardo DiCaprio, Kate Winslet, Tom Cruise and Matt Damon. GAP Event Services supplied the crowd control barriers, Heras fencing, pedestrian

barriers and front of stage barriers. The equipment was used to separate the crowd and red carpet arrivals and to provide a safe working area whilst the site was being built. GAP said installation of the equipment started four days before the event itself, with all equipment being recovered the day after the event. Daimon Dunhue, GAP Event Services division manager explained, "We were de-

lighted to be asked to supply fencing and barriers to allow the event to run smoothly by keeping both the crowd and those on the red carpet safe. "Due to the nature of the event, timescales were shorter than usual to deliver and install all equipment, so our team got to work ensuring both BAFTA and the production company West Design and Production were happy with the results."

YOU might not automatically associate the Oscars with heavy construction machinery - but a JCB Loadall telehandler played a starring role at the biggest event in the showbiz calendar! Terex in new finance offer

Sewer solution proves anything but a Drag GROUNDFORCE'S new 10m Drag Box extension helped Morrison Construction complete a sewer improvement project as part of Scottish Water’s investment programme. The trench support product was put to work on the the Kincardine Flood Reduction Scheme, which consists of upgrading the combined sewer network in Kirk Street and provision of storm attenuation in twin and triple 1,050mm diameter storage pipes 63m and 154m in length respectively. The Drag Box extension is part of a new range of products, which also includes a 5m Trench Box and 5m Manhole Box, which Groundforce say have been designed specifically to cater for large pipe and chamber installations. Groundforce said, "Morrison was required to install the storage pipes and, in addition, provide new bespoke in-situ concrete manhole chambers to carry the diverted flows and a new outfall back into the existing network. "The system is designed to ac-

commodate high levels of surface water run off, alleviating the risk of flooding to nearby residential properties, businesses and the nearby Tulliallan Primary School. "The storage pipes were laid side-by-side in trenches up to 4.25m wide across parkland adjoining the school site." Drew Mackie, Morrison project manager said the Groundforce equipment helped ensure a more cost effective solution on the job. "We had the option of digging a wide cut and battering the sides of the excavation but that would have meant a lot of earthmoving and a large quantity of gravel aggregate to bed the pipes in," he explained. "It was more costeffective to dig vertical trenches and support the sides with equipment supplied by Groundforce." Morrison chose Groundforce's Super Mega Drag Box – a heavy duty trench support system comprising side panels braced with adjustable steel struts. Measuring 7m x 2.8m, the Super Mega Drag Box is the largest in the Groundforce range.

However, on this project something bigger was required. "The pipes came in 6m lengths and would only just fit within the Drag Box," Drew added. "We needed more clearance at either end to allow for adjustment and so our workforce could operate safely." Groundforce had the solution in the form of its newly-developed Drag Box extension, a modular component that bolts onto the standard unit. With this in place, the Drag Box measured 10m x 4.25m x 2.8m, providing plenty of safe working space. "The solution was proposed by Groundforce area sales manager John Cowie, who told us about the new extension," added Drew. "I know John of old and he's got good all-round experience and always gives us good guidance. After talking to him I decided to trial the Drag Box extension." The Super Mega Drag Box extension was developed in late 2015 in response to a trend among pipe manufacturers to offer their products in longer lengths.

Best Case scenario: firm returns to show's largest ever stand

FOR the second successive ScotPlant, Case Construction Equipment will have the largest stand in the show's history. Case has teamed up with its Scottish dealer, Hodge Plant, to display more than 24 different models designed for a wide variety of construction sector, including quarrying and recycling. Highlights will include new machines from the recently launched D series and the first UK qualifying round of the Case Rodeo Challenge event. The heavy range line-up will include the D Series crawler excavators, a wheeled excavator, wheel loaders, and the largest Case dozer. There will also be an "extensive range" of machines from the compact line, including midi excavators, backhoe loaders, mini excavators and skid steer loadProject Plant April/June 2016

Visitors looking to take in something a bit different can watch operators attempt to tackle the first qualifying round of the annual Case Rodeo Challenge. The event showcases skill and speed, with the incentive of a place in this year's final, which will be held in Paris, up for grabs. Operators will have to place balls into a netball net using a 695 backhoe loader. CASE HEAVY RANGE Case confirmed there will be Continued on p38

Continued from p36 three models from the firm's latest D Series crawler excavator range, including a CX130D, CX210D and CX370D. Case said, "These new machines stand out for their productivity, their fast cycles and efficiency, and their Tier 4 Final (Stage IV) maintenance-free technology and no DPF required they offer low running costs combined with outstanding performance. "There will also be two ma-

chines from the C Series, a CX130C LR and CX145C SR. Using Tier 4 Interim engines, they offer efficiency and fuel saving benefits through the use of the CASE Intelligent Hydraulic System (CIHS), which incorporates five electronically managed energy saving systems. "Case's renowned F Series will be on show and will include the Tier 4 Final 821F and 921F, plus a 1121F. There will also be a 621FXT and 721FX which are ideally suited to harsh environments

such as the waste and recycling sectors. Fuel efficient and powerful, these machines have Tier 4 interim-compliant engines that achieve emissions requirements with the use of Selective Catalytic Reduction technology (SCR), which eliminates the need for a Diesel Particulate Filter. Completing the heavy range line-up will be a WX148 wheeled excavator and the 2050M dozer. With its exclusive three-pump hydraulic system, the WX148 delivers increased performance and con-

trol. The 2050M dozer is the largest model in a range which also has SCR technology to meet Tier 4 interim emissions legislation." The compact section of the Case stand will include a 695ST and 580ST backhoe loaders as well as a CX75C SR and CX80C MSR, excavators which Case say "offer industry-leading emissions performance plus a choice of three boom systems, four auxiliary hydraulic control systems, three track options and two dipper-stick lengths".

Hard work pays off Hardox Wearparts Centre Stirling enjoyed great success at ScotPlant 2014 and will be returning to Ingliston with a full new range of excavator buckets for 13t to 60t machines. The firm will be using the show to launch their second generation excavator bucket made from Hardox. Gordon Cameron (pictured right), managing director, explained, "The new design will reduce welded parts and also maximise the load. "We have completed a project that looked at the heat affected damage of applying wear bars onto the Hardox bucket floor versus removing them and are now pushing more for a thicker floor with less wear bars. "This increases the lifetime of the bucket. There are still certain applications that will never get away from having both a Hardox floor and wear bars but we now have another option."

FOR the first time ever, Netherlands-based Top Filtration Europe will display their products at ScotPlant including precleaners, hygroscopic breathers and microfiltrations products.

KING Trailers describe themselves as the UK’s largest manufacturer of trailers for abnormal loads up to 150 tonnes. Whether it is construction equipment and plant, or the need to move any kind of non-standard load, King say they can provide the solution.

Young looking to make a difference

Opti-cal Survey Equipment provides land survey and precision measurement technologies. The firm will be exhibiting a range of construction instruments including rotating and pipe lasers, total stations and 3D laser scanners as well as a selection of cable location and safety equipment including tripod, harness and winch, gas monitor and escape set. CONCRETE Services & Supplies (CSS) specialise in the hire and sale of all concrete equipment products. They are the main dealer/ distributor of Wacker Neuson ride on Power Floats in the UK and Ireland. CSS is also also the UK and European master dealers for Ligchine International ScreedSaver machines. RITCHIE Bros. Auctioneers is the world's largest auctioneers of heavy equipment, construction equipment, agricultural machinery and trucks. With a site at Donington Park, the firm, which was founded almost 60 years ago, is ideally placed to reach buyers both within the UK and around the world.

YOUNG Plant Sales will be back in their usual spot at ScotPlant with a host of new machines and a spring in their step after an "excellent" start to 2016. The Stirling-based firm has secured a host of significant orders in the early months of the year and reclaimed the dealership for Thwaites dumpers. Managing director Brian Young has exhibited at every single ScotPlant, though this year's event will be an emotional one as it is the first show his mother Bridie, who passed away shortly before Christmas, has missed. "It will be very strange with her not being there," Brian said. "I've got so many great memories from previous ScotPlants, including our 30th anniversary celebrations when we had a roast pig and champagne on our stand each

day. My mother was very much part of those celebrations. "These trade shows are very important. We have a very limited shop window to let customers see our products. We're always there to do business but some-

Project Plant April/June 2016

40

times it's just a starting point in that we'll meet new and existing customers, talk about their potential purchases for the year ahead and lay down a platform to commence negotiations. The actual buying process can sometimes be quite long and drawn out. "We've been in the same spot since the show started, pretty much in the centre of the showground. To entice new customers onto the stand, something needs to stand out. Customers tend to be very loyal to brands but if we can demonstrate that we have a new solution to a current problem, they'll want to know more about it. We have to sell our difference. If your stand looks the same as everyone else's, where's the incentive for people to come Continued on p42

Continued from p40 on?" Young Plant will have a selection of models from the new HX range of Hyundai excavators on their stand, alongside innovative new machines from Kubota, Bomag, Probst, CompAir and Hydrema. Brian is particularly excited about having a wide range of Thwaites dumpers back on the stand for the first time in a decade. "It was a huge coup to get the dealership back," he added. "We've missed it. We bought NBT (North British Tractors) in 2003 particularly to get the Thwaites, Bomag and CompAir dealerships. We were very disappointed when we lost it and absolutely delighted to get it back again. "We've had an excellent start to the year with some big orders. One demolition firm just ordered a couple of 44-tonners and a 50-tonne excavator. We also concluded a deal with Scottish Water for 40 Kubota mini-excavators. We'd been working on that order for three-and-a-half years. "We're planning on 10-15% growth for the year ahead. We had a five-year plan for continuous growth of 10-15% per annum. This is the final year of that plan and we've achieved all our targets so far. We believe we're on track to hit our targets again this year and we've certainly started with success in the first quarter. Once that ends, we'll start a new five-year plan, hopefully on a similar vein." Brian has just been added to the executive committee of the Scottish Plant Owners Associa-

tion (SPOA) and he believes this institution plays a vital role in managing positive changes to the industry. "I've just attended my first meeting, it was good – I enjoyed it," he enthused. "I went to the AGM earlier this year and somebody asked me why I wasn't on the committee. I said 'because you haven't asked me!' "This association is very important for our industry. We have great concerns in the industry over recruitment, training, etc, and luckily for our industry the SPOA takes these matters very seriously and is seeking partnerships to address them. The SPOA is sourcing government funding to provide training funds for apprentices and new people coming into the industry. They've

had success over the past 12-18 months in finding money to provide training for operators who'd left the industry to come back into it, which can be an easier route in some ways when trying to recruit new site operatives and a skilled labour force. "The skills shortage issue is not currently worrying us too much at Young Plant because we have a fairly full and varied skilled workforce so we're not actively recruiting, but we have found it very difficult in the past, particularly getting skilled engineers. Everybody's looking for the same people. In times of recession, people stop training youngsters. And when you're understaffed, you can't afford to have your skilled people spending too much time training new recruits. You need them out there working on the product. "We didn't cut back on apprentices during the recession. Doing that can be short-sighted. It is difficult but, having been in business 37 years, we've seen a few recessions come and go and appreciate the skills gap created every time we come out of one." Brian laments the fact that, especially over the past two decades with the rise of the Internet, more and more youngsters are pursuing different career paths

Project Plant April/June 2016

42

than they would have done in days gone by. "White collar" industries like web design have replaced construction as the career of choice for many. He believes the education sector could be doing much more to promote construction and has already volunteered to go into local schools to talk to pupils about the opportunities available. "I would like to see better promotion of the construction industry at school level, because I don't think the careers teachers make the youngsters aware of the opportunities involved," he said. "The perception is poor but I think the level of skill required now to work on sophisticated machinery, with up-to-date electronics, telematics and very sensitive hydraulic systems, requires a new breed of engineer who must be computer literate as well as having a good knowledge of mechanics."

Sandvik best-sellers will be out in force VISITORS to the Sandvik stand will be treated to a selection of the construction giant's bestselling models from their mobile crushing and screening range. Sandvik say the machines have been developed with customers' requirements in mind, ensuring the firm produces the right equipment, for the right application, with features that ensure "maximum levels of productivity, with the lowest levels of cost and environmental impact". Highlights this year include: • QH331 Hydrocone crusher • QJ341 Jaw Crusher • QJ241 Jaw Crusher • QE341 Scalper

Project Plant April/June 2016

46

The QH331 cone crusher features the CH430 Hydrocone crusher, described by Sandvik as possessing a direct drive system in order to increase product performance. "This is more efficient and robust, featuring a variable crusher speed to manipulate product gradation," the firm said. QH331 key features include: • Sandvik Hydrocone crusher for ultimate performance and reliability • Remote camera for visibility of the crushing chamber from ground level • Level sensor to regulate the feed to optimise product, reduction and shape

• User friendly PLC control system and colour screen for ease of operation Two of the best-selling jaw crushers from Sandvik's Premium range will also be on display. The larger model, the QJ341, possesses what the firm says is a "class leading" 1200 x 750 mm jaw size that has been designed for larger operations. The QJ241 is the most compact member in the range, but still boasts an impressive 1000 x 650 mm feed opening. Both models feature a hydraulically adjustable CSS setting and are hydraulically driven which enables the machine to restart with a full crushing chamber. Sandvik said both have proved to be ideal for recycling applications being fitted with a reverse crushing capability to relieve blockages and crush problematic sticky materials. The extended main conveyor

may also be hydraulically raised or lowered, making it the "ideal solution" for rebar clearance in recycling applications. Other features include: • Automatic central lubrication system to reduce maintenance time • User friendly PLC control system and colour screen enabling visual data output and control • Steel pipe work, for a maintenance free sealing solution and better heat dissipation • Speed wheel on the main conveyor and an improved load control system for optimum feed regulation providing a continuous and uninterrupted crushing process Also being showcased at this year's ScotPlant is the QE341 tracked scalper, which has been developed with easier setup, operation and maintenance to the fore.

Sandvik said the machine features an easy to operate electrical control system, which incorporates a number of features to improve both the operational effectiveness and machine safety. The control simple system has colour-coded numerical push buttons and a visual display unit. This enables the operator to view engine and plant status. Prestart

warnings on all plant functions and an auto start/stop facility together with a three mode selector function - setup, operation and tracking facility - all ensure that safety, as well as ease of operation, are paramount. With full radio controlled as standard, the QE341 is said to be perfect for contractors requiring the need to travel quickly from site-to-site.

Fraser C Robb sell, service and repair all types of groundcare and facilities management equipment. The firm sells a wide range of different products across many different industries from commercial electric products, utility vehicles, wood chippers, pressure washers, commercial and domestic garden equipment. ECO Baughan 2000 manufactures waste and recycling systems and rehandling attachments. They'll be exhibiting barrel screens, small crusher bucket crushers and grapples. ISO 9001:2008 quality accredited and UKAS quality management certified, Graepel Perforators have manufactured and supplied products to the quarry and recycling industry for over 56 years. The firm said its machinery and top of the range tooling ensures high quality products for their customers, from perforated metal and woven wire mesh to anti-slip flooring and rubber screens. TRAFFCO Ltd are sole UK suppliers for Belgian specialist trailer manufacturer Faymonville. With trailers ranging from 20 to 10,000 tonnes, Traffco say Faymonville are the number one choice in the heavy trailer market. At ScotPlant they'll be showing off three and four axle stepframes from Faymonville's Multimax and Max range, as well as a specialist heavy haulage low bed trailer.

Teeing up plant hire MTS Group, one of the largest hirers of Bobcat plant equipment in Europe, will be showing off their hire fleet at ScotPlant. The company's Scottish arm launched in 2014 with the opening of their Cumbernauld depot, initially to provide 300 golf buggies for the Ryder Cup in Gleneagles, with plant hire being introduced the following year. Depot manager Andrew Donnelly hopes their array of attachments can help them stand out from the competition at the show. "Hopefully we can show the right attachments that other hire companies don't have or other demolition companies don't know about‌ we're hoping to attract people just by showing them something different. I think the likes of the rock saw, in particular, we've had good success with that recently with companies like Corecut using it on the M1. Also, our small 18-inch planer heads for doing small pavements or small road surface jobs. "We'll be showing the tree spade, the wheel saw, the rock saw; we're showing our tracked machines and a couple of diggers as well, just to show a different range of what we do," Andrew added. "We're going to take

a ton-and-a-half machine and we're also going to take a middle of range, so an E45 or an E32 compact excavator. "To be honest, we didn't expect it to be as popular just now," said Andrew, when discussing introducing the plant hire division to Scotland. "We thought it was going to take maybe three or four years before the plant would be accepted into Scotland but I think the golf side has helped us push the plant because of the areas we are in." Andrew, who has experience in the machinery and groundcare industry, continued, "Where we differ slightly is, because of my golf

background, we do a lot more hires into golf clubs with attachments. We do a lot of tree spade work, stump grinder work and trencher work, which is something that's never been offered to golf clubs from a plant side of a business before. At this moment in time we deal with Westerwood, Crow Wood, Ralston in Paisley, Helensburgh and Pitreavie; that's just a few to name." Over the next year, the company wants to grow the plant hire division. "The plan going forward is to actually increase the golf side because there are 508 18Continued on p54

Continued from p52 hole golf courses in Scotland that we do deal with in buggies but we want to try and build our plant side in the golf environment, as well as demolition. "We've done pretty well getting to where we are just now with the kit," said Andrew, "On a dayto-day basis we deal mainly with Bobcat skid-steers. "We don't do as much on an excavator side because it's quite a hard market but at this moment in time we're sitting on about 27 skid-steer loaders out, mostly on one wind farm and road cleaning sites. The majority of our kit is new so it has come straight from Bobcat to Scotland. "The biggest job we have just

now is the Aberdeen bypass where we've got six machines and all they're doing is brushwork so you get a lot of other companies coming in and they see the machines and it spirals from there. The biggest customer base just now is actually other plant companies... I think it's because of the range of attachments we've got; there are so many attachments for one machine." One of the company's more memorable jobs was the unusual demolition of Glasgow’s Bluevale flats in 2014. "We had a couple of skid-steers working over at the Bluevale flats in Glasgow. The flats were too close to roads and other houses to be demolished by explosives so they were taken down from the top down. We had

a Bobcat E45 compact excavator sitting on top of the Bluevale flats roof with a pecker on it and it chipped away the bricks, put everything down the lift shaft then one of the skid-steers would remove the debris from the lift shaft." Speaking on the importance of trade shows, Andrew said, "Events like ScotPlant are good because it's a way for us to get our name out to so many people. You can spend all day driving round, visiting people but when you have a stand at a show, they're coming to you. We just want to get our name out there. We're not greedy, we're just looking for different areas of the market that we can try and penetrate."

King of the Hill: new Tefra tilt hitch on show NORTHERN Ireland-based attachment manufacturer Hill Engineering will be at ScotPlant with its new Tefra tilt hitch, the awardwinning Tefra coupler and Hill Titan buckets. The Hill Tefra tilt hitch was born from the innovation of the Tefra originally brought to market in 2011. Hill say this tilt system allows operators "greater flexibility" in the way they use their machines and turns each and every attachment into one that can be used at up to 180 degrees. Hill has used the Tefra system as the core of the product and introduced the hugely reliable tilt motor from HKS of Germany to achieve the 180-degree tilt function. Oliver Phelan, Hill Engineering's sales and marketing manager explained, "We see this market growing significantly in the coming months and years as operators demand more from their machines. "The quality associated with the Hill and Tefra brands, coupled with the unrivalled back up services for our clients, means the Tefra tilt should be an essential tool in any operator's kit bag."

ABOUT THE TEFRA TILT HITCH The Tefra coupler and the HKS Extra Tilt Power Actuator have been united to provide users with two "market leading" technologies that, according to Hill Engineering, will transform the productivity of the users excavator. With a tilt angle of 180 degrees on all models, this groundbreaking product will enable users to increase the versatility of their attachments in multiple applications. ROBUST AND SIMPLE DESIGN Hill Engineering say that the

Project Plant April/June 2016

56

simple and robust design of the Tefra tilt sets this product apart from other suppliers. The Tefra comes with just three moving parts and, according to Hill, has been proven to be "the most reliable quick coupler on the market today". Additional to this, the HKS XtraTilt Power Actuator is self-lubricating and essentially maintenance free, so that users are able to concentrate on the important tasks. There can be no damage to tilt cylinders and failure of their connecting parts, such as fastening bolts and bushes, because the Power Actuator has none of these.

New model set to give firm a huge lift

The MK1033CW-1

KRANLYFT will be arriving at ScotPlant to exhibit Bocker aluminium boomed truck and trailer cranes and Maeda mini cranes. The firm said it's the first time Bocker cranes have been exhibited in Scotland. There will be seven different cranes on the stand, including the newest model in the Maeda mini crane range - MK1033CW-1, described as being unique in the range due to it being a knuckle boom type crane. Kranlyft said, "The addition of this new crane enables Kranlyft and Maeda to become an even greater force in the growing glass-handling market, petrochemical industry, and many other projects where the use of a hydraulic jib is required such as maintenance inside factories. "The new crane is a narrow aisle, operator-controlled crane like the rest of the MC range, but with the advantage of a hydraulic 6 section luffing boom and jib. This gives the crane a serious "up and over" capacity, making it easier to perform many tasks such as installing glass in window frames, lifting over pipes in narrow spaces and placing Dormers and Velux units on top of roofs. "The MK1033CW-1 is still nar-

row enough to fit through a standard doorway, being 75cm wide and less than 2m high. The overall length is 2.73m and it weighs 2.09kg in order to fit in construction elevators. "The small knuckle boom has a maximum capacity of 0.995t, maximum working height of 1.3m and maximum working radius of 9.9m, making this a truly versatile machine. "The basic model has a diesel engine and comes with a fixed crane hook on the end of the boom to reduce the distance between the top of the boom and the hook, again very important for work in confined spaces such as indoor glass-mounting or working under roof extensions.

Project Plant April/June 2016

58

There is an optional winch available to make the crane as flexible as possible for different types of jobs. "Additional options available are Petrol, Petrol/LPG engines, or 380-400 volt electric motor, as well as advanced options to the display such as GPS. "Multi outrigger positions make the crane even more flexible. Each outrigger can be placed in seven different horizontal positions and six different outrigger length positions. "With this important feature comes of course the built in safety standards of Maeda, a device that stops the boom movements automatically before coming into any restricted areas."

Liebherr debutants set new standards Liebherr – Great Britain is using ScotPlant to exhibit for the first time in the UK the new large wheel loader generation XPower. An L 566 XPower model will be exhibited, with Liebherr describing the XPower machines as "an integral and innovative machine concept which sets new standards in terms of fuel efficiency, performance, robustness and comfort." Operators of a Liebherr-XPower wheel loader are said to be able to save up to 30 per cent on fuel. Liebherr are also hoping to have their brand new dozer, the PR 726 Litronic, making its UK debut at Ingliston. The machine

THE KING OF SWING, SHORT AND STRONG!

is said to push performance to the highest level due to "proactive performance adaptation". A hydrostatic drive and selectable ECO mode makes it cost effective and efficient while the modern comfort cab has a completely redeveloped operator station. The model is designed for 2D and 3D machine controls of renowned manufacturers Liebherr said, "The design of the new Liebherr PR 726 crawler tractor offers outstanding visibility from all sides. The model is the successor to the successful PR 724. "(It) offers an operating weight of 16,000 kg to 19,800 kg and its

Liebherr diesel engine returns 120 kW / 163 HP. "The PR 726 is powered by a 4-cylinder Liebherr diesel engine that complies with the Stage IV / Tier 4f emissions standard. In order for the requisite emissions and consumption targets to be achieved, the entire combustion process has been optimised to reduce the particulates, even within the engine, to a minimum. "To simplify the system and to optimise exhaust gas treatment, Liebherr relies on selective catalytic reduction (SCR) technology for the PR 726. This makes the use of a diesel particulate filter unnecessary and thereby simplifies maintenance for the customer. The highly efficient combustion process facilitates low fuel consumption. "The optimised adaptation of the engine parameters to changing operating conditions is supported in a number of ways in-

cluding an in-house-developed common rail injection system incorporating an in-house-developed electronic engine management system. The main components of the generation 6 crawler tractors come from Liebherr's own production line and are

therefore optimally tailored to the machine. Among these components are the diesel engine and the common rail injection system as well as the electronic components and various hydraulic components." Other machines on the Liebherr

stand will include R 922 tracked excavator with quick hitch and 54'' bucket, R 946 tracked excavator with quick hitch and GP bucket, PR 736 dozer with straight blade, LH 22 material handler with selector grab and an L 538 wheel loader with GP bucket.

Taking a grip on the market TAKEUCHI'S appearance at ScotPlant 2016 coincides with the firm celebrating 20 years in the UK and Ireland. One of the reasons the firm has thrived in this competitive market for the past two decades is because of a commitment not to stand still with new product development when it comes to excavators. Takeuchi has constantly increased the number of models available during that time, and added new weight class options for both reduced tail swing and conventional. This year, there's something new In the micro category - a short tail swing TB210R is the long awaited micro to replace the very popular TB108.

The new model comes with three cylinders and a stylish control panel, a powerful micro alternative; described by Takeuchi as being perfect where space is

a premium – and good for the DIY weekend hire as controls are simple. Continued on p70

Continued from p68 Takeuchi said they remain the most popular in the 1.6 weight class and now have quite a selection of options both conventional and short tail swing under 3 tonne. The TB230 is a new 3 tonne for a very popular operating size – featuring a new cab, excellent

ground reach and extra digging force. The "roomy" new Takeuchi cabs are already proving popular with operators for both foot space as well as all round visibility. At 4 tonnes, a new TB240 is a brand new Takeuchi weight class meeting growing demand for more power options between 3 and 5 tonnes. The firm said that, once again, the 4 tonnes offers greater dig depth and a 27.2kW en-

Zero swing options continue to be a must on restricted sites and Takeuchi has upgraded the FR range with a new TB280FR featuring a new cab and 8486kg of operating weight with a 46.7kW engine – powerful capacity for tough working environments. At 15 tonne Takeuchi has added a new option with a Series 2 TB1140 that now powers in at 15 tonnes that when combined with its unique offset boom, is said to provide the most compact machine in this weight class.

We’re bringing top class technology to the market; our philosophy is to keep our overheads low, where possible, thereby keeping our margins low and offering value for money to our customers,” commented managing director, Ben McQuaid. “In the last year we’ve heavily focused on Scotland and northeast England and we’ve had a very successful year which we want to continue and improve on. “This is our first ScotPlant event and, being based in Scotland, this is the most important event in our calendar year.”

Ben continued, “You’ll be meeting our suppliers, you’ll be meeting ourselves; we’ll have three machines on the stand, one of which is a CRS 6018 Flip Flow Screen & Air Drum Separator, which is going to become more prominent with the introduction of LOI (Loss on Ignition) testing due to come into Scotland in October. The company will also be showing the Haas Tyron 2000XL New Edition Slow Speed Shredder, which features an independent shaft drive mechanism, along with the Anaconda FSL100 Scalping Screen. “We’ve put a good two years into the Scottish market and we want to build on that,” Ben added. “All we want to do is to continue get our name out there. Of course, picking up a couple of enquiries will be great but it’s equally about meeting the customers in a different environment than normal and for them to find out a little bit more about us and us about them.”

with most types of quick coupler systems and with a direct mounted upper/lower section. Caroline Sigge, co-founder of QCE, said, "Scotland has always been a very good market for tiltrotators and for us. "We're very much looking forward to attending ScotPlant for the first time. We have attended the Black Isle Show, which was very good. "Feedback on our products has been very positive. I believe Scottish customers understand the potential of these products."

Steel-ing a march BOSS Cabins is "set to transform" the mobile welfare unit market in a move designed to boost the comfort and care of construction workers. The firm now offers its entire range of cabins in stainless steel, supported by a 25-year corrosion warranty – which Boss described as a radical new development likely to spell the end for cabins constructed in mild steel – a move that will improve standards and conditions on site.

Matthew Wordsworth, joint managing director, said, "It is a radical step for Boss in response to customers on site wanting a better quality welfare unit that will more readily resist the robust and understandable treatment it receives in a construction environment. "We suspect that it will not be long before our competitors try to copy us - then all welfare units will be built in stainless steel." Boss says they will continue

to offer cabins in mild steel or in variants of mild and stainless but fully expect the market to switch as customers see and appreciate the long term benefits and higher standards. The firm claims that with a fully stainless steel cabin, the life expectancy can be far greater, partly due to the fact that in addition to the obvious benefit of stainless steel being non-corrosive it is also 25% stronger than mild steel.

the complete drive. "The heavy-duty slow-speed DW-3060K shredder is designed to handle large bulk timber and woodwaste, mixed construction waste and industrial refuse. This single shaft shredder has numerous beneficial features which include optimum roller and comb teeth arrangements which ensure comprehensive shredding of the feed material; reversible fan wheel; generous hopper shape and size for easy loading; electrically controlled roller reversing and a large return conveyor."

Continued from p80 ScotPlant." SCREENING AND CRUSHING MACHINES FROM POWERSCREEN The Warrior 600 mobile screening plant is the most recent and smallest addition to the six-model Warrior range. Described by Blue as compact and easy to transport, the machine features a hydraulic conversion process from 3-way to 2-way split mode which can be completed in minutes and this model has been designed for owners and operators requiring versatility and manoeuvrability. Blue said, "Output can be as much as 280 tonnes per hour, depending on application and screen size. The Warrior 600 is equipped with a 2340mm x 1170mm screenbox capable of 6g of force. This high-strength, high amplitude, two-bearing screenbox allows easy handling and separation of large items in recycling applications, such as soils from tree stumps and logs or fines and rock from overburden and blasted rock. Other operating benefits include a rapid set-up

time, ease of operation aided by hydraulic folding side conveyors, rigid feed hopper sides and two speed crawler undercarriage. "The Premiertrak 600 is one of a range of high performance primary jaw crushing mobile plants with a throughput of around 600 tonnes per hour depending on application. It is quick and easy to set up, robustly engineered for high production quarrying and recycling applications and is especially suited to processing hard rock."

and less overlengths. Flail tip exchange is quick, as the system obviates the need for wedges – and there is no bending of the flail tips either. Smoother diesel engine control reduces fuel consumption and this model also features a design to reduce impacts from the shredding compartment which results in less wear and tear in

DOPPSTADT MOBILE SHREDDERS The AK-510K is designed and built specifically for wood and green waste processing, with "large volume capacities" for even more intensive shredding of tree-trunks, roots, pallets and building timber waste, green and organic waste. Blue commented, "A high-speed shredder, the crawler-mounted AK-510K features a high flywheel mass and a new flail system for improved capacity. Additionally, the whole flail unit swings back later in harder material, leading to a more aggressive infeed Project Plant April/June 2016

THE CAMS ASPHALT RECYCLER The "compact yet powerful" Centauro 100-32 is designed and built to process recycled asphalt, combining a roller crusher/shredder and screening system all on one mobile plant. According to Blue, the dual process ensures a high quality fines with a good percentage of reclaimed asphalt in the end product. Blue said, "The Centauro 100-32 is powered by an array of electric motors for each function via the on-board, fuel-efficient JCB 448 diesel powered genset which produces 121kW at 1500RPM. "An output of up to 160 tonnes per hour belies the Centauro’s size – the machine's transport dimensions are only 2.55m width X 11.20m length and 3.10m height."

Mini 57C-1

Continued from p90 JS130, but is powered by a rental-specific 55kW (74hp) version of JCB's proven Ecomax diesel engine. This power unit meets Tier 4 Final emissions standards without a diesel particulate filter (DPF) or any requirement for Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) and a diesel exhaust fluid. Also making their Scottish show debuts will be the new 48Z-1 & 57C-1 mini excavators, the 3CX Compact and 3CX Platinum Edition (JCB 70th Anniversary) backhoe loaders and the 457 wheeled loading shovel with CommandPlus cab. Part of JCB's new series of 4 and 5 tonne mini excavators, the 48Z-1 zero tailswing and 57C-1 conventional tailswing model share the durable design proven on the larger machines in JCB's

next generation compact excavator range, with 100% steel bodywork and a sturdy fourplate dipper arm construction. JCB said other key features include: 500 hour greasing intervals, improved cab instrumentation, an 11% improvement in visibility, 9% boost to bucket tearout, 5% additional dump height and 2% more powerful bucket tearout force. The 3CX Compact - designed to deliver big machine performance for confined job sites – takes the compact backhoe loader concept to a new level, to meet the demands of the construction sites of tomorrow. Just 1.9m wide, 2.74m high and with a top speed of 40km/h - the 3CX Compact is said to be perfect for road resurfacing and repair contractors, utilities, groundworkers and municipalities working in

the confines of congested urban construction projects. The 'Platinum Edition' 3CX backhoe loader is a colourful limited edition machine manufactured to mark JCB's 70th anniversary. A total of 70 models - one for every year that JCB has been in business - will be produced in striking livery last seen on the 3CIII model in 1979. Each comes complete with red bucket, full white cab and red wheels instead of the customary black and yellow finish and is fitted with air-conditioned cab, heated seat and a six-speed Autoshift transmission. In a nod to the demands of the modern operator, the colourful machines will also be equipped with in-cab coffee makers. The JCB 457 wheeled loading shovel meets Euro Stage IV (Tier 4 Final) emissions standards,

with the adoption of a powerful MTU diesel engine that is described as being perfectly matched to the machine's operating duties. JCB said the engine contributes to a fuel saving of around 16% compared to the previous model. As with other JCB machines, the engine in the 457 meets latest emissions legislation without the need for a diesel particulate filter (DPF), relying on an efficient combustion process, with a selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system and an exhaust fluid additive. Scot JCB has supplied and serviced JCB machinery for over 50 years, growing into a highly specialised machinery distribution company operating through a network of twelve branches from Muir of Ord north of Inverness, to Carnforth in Lancashire.

Double delight for worldwide brands

The oldest company in Korea, founded in 1896, Doosan has developed new products and technologies to make it a leading player in the global construction machinery sector.

INCORPORATING both the Doosan and Bobcat brands, Doosan's business continues to grow and both brands will be represented at this year’s ScotPlant, on a stand hosted by their Scottish dealers Lloyd Ltd and Balgownie Ltd. Lloyd Ltd represents Doosan and Bobcat across the south of Scotland and north of England with construction sales specialists from its Dumfries, Carlisle and Newcastle dealerships, as well as from its construction plant business in Thornaby, attending ScotPlant while Balgownie Ltd are the main dealers for the north of Scotland from their branch in Inverurie. Both businesses say they are looking forward to welcoming guests onto their stand and showcasing the latest range of Doosan and Bobcat machines. THE NEW DOOSAN RANGE Offering wheeled or crawler excavators and wheeled loaders, Doosan's latest range pro-

vides a "versatile and economical choice" of robust and flexible machines to suit a variety of applications, from reduced-radius excavators for work in confined spaces to great all-rounders for residential to mid-sized jobs including pipe-laying and demolition, not to mention wheeled loaders with "powerful yet economical engines". Replacing the popular "-3" models, the new range of "-5" models areTier 4-compliant and have been designed for long life with an extra sturdy frame and reinforced superstructure. Doosan say improved fuel consumption, refined cab design and extended servicing intervals all combine to provide a lower Total Cost of Ownership. Doosan Telematics are also said to make maintaining the machines simple and manageable, providing real-time data to give true operational intelligence, which in turn can reduce operating costs. A three-year subscription to the Doosan Tele-

matics service comes as standard on all new machines, providing information on things like fuel usage, operating hours and machine location. THE BOBCAT RANGE Founded in the USA over 50 years ago, Bobcat was acquired by Doosan in 2007, retaining the world-renowned Bobcat brand. From skid-steer loaders to mini-excavators, Bobcat's range is described as providing "superior power and performance that will help you do more, faster and better". With easy maintenance and servicing, a focus on operator comfort, and making their compact machines readily transportable, Bobcat say they have found the perfect combination for their customers. The Doosan and Bobcat ranges are increasingly extensive, but many of their most popular models will be on display on the Lloyd Ltd and Balgownie stand.

Three Es drive Kobelco forward deliver Stage 4-compliant emissions levels and impressive levels of fuel efficiency to minimise operating costs whilst maximising working performance. By making the engine compartment easier to access and providing diagnostics via the cabin monitor, these machines are simpler and faster to maintain.

80 years of manufacturing excavators have put Kobelco in the ideal position to continue to innovate and develop new engines and solutions. The Japanese manufacturer will be attending ScotPlant for the first time this year.

JAPANESE manufacturer Kobelco will be attending ScotPlant for the first time this year. With European headquarters in the Netherlands, the company has focused on developing its position in the region, providing its crawler and mini excavators, servicing and parts operations throughout Europe. The Kobelco range covers 1- to 50-tonne machines, including conventional and mini excavators, as well as specialist machines for demolition and recycling. The company says its values of providing built-to-last quality, low fuel consumption, low-noise operations and high-performance excavators have made it a popular choice in the construction industry as its reputation grows. Focusing increasingly on using technology to reduce fuel con-

sumption and emissions, whilst simultaneously improving working performance, reliability and operator comfort, Kobelco says it has put itself in the "ideal position" to meet the need to improve both productivity and economy. Their focus on the "Three Es" concept which created the SK series – "enhancement, economy, environment" – has been continuously refined to meet both stringent regulations and revolutionary operations, offsetting the cost of reducing their machines' environmental impact by cutting running costs in response to modern needs. CRAWLER EXCAVATORS Kobelco's latest Generation 10 models, such as the SK260LC-10 and the SK260NLC-10, are said to combine new technologies to

MINI EXCAVATORS In 2015 Kobelco introduced seven mini excavators to add to its range, four of which were new conventional machines while the other three were updated versions of popular short radius machines. The new conventional models were designed to be easily transportable and deliver "exceptional" work performance in all areas of site work and location. This transportability is essential in the mini excavator market so Kobelco specifically designed these machines to allow site-to-site transportation by car and trailer to keep transportation costs low whilst enabling flexible use of the machines at different sites. EASY FLEET MANAGEMENT The Kobelco Monitoring Excavation System (KOMEXS) has been described by the firm as making managing a fleet of machines much easier. Via the KOMEXS web-based programme, users can monitor their machines remotely to keep track of their location and fuel consumption, and check maintenance and service requirements to plan ahead and minimise downtime. Kobelco say its approach to engineering, design and ownership activities means that customers can maximise productivity, save time and money, and undertake efficient planning to ensure operations are as efficient as possible.

Van-mounted boom prepared for lift-off THE new Aldercote van-mounted boom lifts will make their UK debut at ScotPlant. Van-mounted booms are used for roadside working at height applications such as street lighting, roofing, building façade maintenance and arb work. Designed and built in Britain, Aldercote's van mounts are said to "set new industry standards" for key performance metrics including operator safety, vehicle payload, platform safe working load and boom outreach. Access Platform Sales (APS), the exclusive UK distributor for Aldercote products, is exhibiting the VZ130U model at ScotPlant, to showcase the range's design features. These include the design of the pedestal, which is located behind the bulkhead, providing more space for storing tools and equipment. APS said its unique tripod design also makes access safer and easier for operators and service technicians. APS said, "The combination of the lightweight boom and pedestal substantially increases vehicle payload – the 12m and 13m booms mounted on 3.5 Ford Transits offer up to 300kg of carrying capacity, even after accounting for two occupants and a full tank of fuel.

MELLEX Group Ltd will be exhibiting Hiab, trucks, track dumpers and specialised access equipment. The group provides an "extensive" variety of plant, with or without operators, including cranes and all terrain vehicles. MST Parts Group are the "one stop shop" for replacement parts for earthmoving, mining construction machinery. They'll be showcasing undercarriage parts, rubber tracks, bucket teeth, wear parts and new buckets. PROTEUS will exhibit products from its hire and sales fleet of static and mobile Hot Boxes, including a new tipper trailer model.

"A further innovation is that two of the tripod's legs incorporate independent, rotating stabilisers. A direct load transfer system transfers the platform load through the main column directly to the stabilisers. This reduces the stress on the vehicle’s chassis, increasing its life span. "Aldercote also made the health and safety of operators and service technicians a design priority. To this end, the hydraulic oil tank and emergency lowering controls are now housed in the rear of the van, eliminating the need for climbing onto the roof." The Aldercote range is divided into three series, each with different levels of performance and specification: Performance, Utility and Contractor. The Performance series is the premium product. The Aldercote Utility series lifts are competitively priced for the street lighting market. The Contractor Series are market-entry products, combining robust hydraulic platform controls with simple, steel boom designs. APS installs kits supplied by Aldercote into Ford Transit and Iveco Daily vans at its HQ in Telford, Shropshire. Scottish customers are supported by its sales team and workshop based in Wishaw.

In the spotlight Shindaiwa will be in the spotlight at this year's ScotPlant as the construction industry supplier showcases its new solar hybrid lighting tower. The ECO Solar Hybrid Tower is self-contained and requires no external charging. The Shindaiwa tower uses an average 1.46 litres of diesel a day and offers a running time up to 60 days on a single tank of fuel, which is reported to save customers up to £300 in fuel savings each month. "Ideal" for the construction industry, the tower is described as being lighter than conventional products as it has aluminium body panels and a galvanised chassis, so it's also corrosion resistant and able to withstand the harshest environments. Shindaiwa managing director Andy Munford said, "We are delighted to be bringing the ECO lighting tower to ScotPlant for the first time. It offers customers the best of both worlds by using the very latest in solar power and diesel hybrid technology, which in turn dramatically reduces overall carbon emissions, fossil fuel consumption and air pollution. "Initial interest has been high and we are confident the ECO tower will be a welcome addition to Project Plant April/June 2016

100

our product range that includes Shindaiwa welders and generators." The ECO tower features four ultra bright LED lamps that can be used for eight hours before the need to recharge. The twin cylinder Kubota diesel engine automatically charges the batteries in just over an hour and is programmed to run at specific times of the day, guaranteeing silent mode at night. Also taking to the Shindaiwa stand will be its range of compact Powercenter Generators.

RDS is fully loaded MAKING its ScotPlant debut, LOADEX 100 is a retrofittable scale installed on both tracked and wheeled 360 degree excavators to weigh the amount of material in the bucket, grab or clamshell. The product is being exhibited by RDS Scotland, who describe the system as easy-to-use and allowing drivers to load correctly first time, eradicating trips to the stockpile, reducing vehicle and tyre wear and maximising tons per hour performance. Also on display will be the LOADMASTER a100 on-board weighing scale for wheel loaders. Now approved for commercial transactions, LOADMASTER a100 is a CAN-based system combining sensor technology and signal processing techniques. RDS said the LOADMASTER a100 "provides precise and consistent bucket weight information and emphasises the gains in productivity and profitability". Another product to be shown for the first time at ScotPlant is the recently launched iSOSYNC PC software, designed to enable control of load-out operations, inventory, productivity and traceability management. iSOSYNC can be used with either LOADMASTER a100 or LOADEX 100 and allows the

"rapid transfer" of job information from a central computer to the loader or excavator. The resultant load information is sent back to the PC upon completion. The system can be one or two-way and is designed to operate fully automatically and without changing the loading routine for the mobile operator. iSOSYNC can also be remotely accessed utilising standard query language (SQL), acting as a bridge module between the on-board weighing system and a customer's existing load management software package. For smaller loaders and skid-steers, RDS offers the WEIGHLOG a10. This instrument is a user-friendly on-board weighing system which provides accurate and consistent bucket and total load results. Another new product on show will be the LIFTLOG 1000, designed specifically for forklift trucks operating in the fastest loading environments.

ANDY Black first attended ScotPlant as a wide-eyed eight-yearold and was fascinated by the size and range of machines on display. This year, the founder of Relentless Plant Services is exhibiting for the first time and arrives at Ingliston fresh from signing a deal to become a distributor for A&Y Equipment in the Scottish Central Belt and Borders. Relentless offers mobile plant servicing and repairs across Scotland. The firm also supplies the full range of FRD breakers, VTN demolition attachments and Keen Attachments buckets. Relentless say they'll be coming "mob-handed" to ScotPlant and will also be raising money for

breast cancer with a pink digger bucket raffle. Andy said, "My dad took me to ScotPlant when I was about eight. You can go to work with your dad and sit in a machine, which is quite exciting. But going to ScotPlant and seeing what seemed like a million machines was something else. As a kid, the showground seems huge. "The Scottish market doesn't have anything else as big as this and people always make the effort for ScotPlant. For some people, it's a day shopping about. Everyone's there." Business has been "hectic" for Relentless Plant so far in 2016. Two extra fitters have been hired

to cope with the increase in work and experienced plant industry worker Eddie Murray has joined as sales and service manager, with a particular focus on looking after the excavator side of things. Andy Black believes adding the Yanmar excavators to the firm's portfolio will be "massive". "It's good to be associated with those kind of premium brands," Andy added. "We'll have Yanmar excavators at ScotPlant as well as most of the Furukawa breakers, VTN demolition attachments and buckets and attachments from Keen, which have been selling very well. "The FXJ125 is being shown for the first time in Scotland."

Military precision

71 Engineer Regiment will be returning to ScotPlant after an impressive showing at the 2014 event, to showcase more of the armed forces' plant equipment and get the word out about the vital work that they do. The 71 Engineers will be bringing between six and seven staff to the show, including a plant operator. They will also have an information stand where attendees can find out more. Project Plant April/June 2016

Staff Sergeant Lawrence Johnson said that they "had a lot of employment engagement" at the 2014 event and companies were impressed with the qualifications of the army plant operators. Lawrence added that there is "always an opportunity" for experienced plant operators to get involved but emphasised that they must complete the required army training.

Linlithgow family firm set to Rock exhibition LINLITHGOW-based Rockforce Construction Equipment Ltd is returning to ScotPlant this year to show off the company's range of after market ground engaging tools, demolition tools and rock breaking consumables. They will also be displaying other Black Cat Blades equipment including the teeth replacement for the ESCO Super V range; the standard teeth range for Cat and a range of Boron steel heat-treated blades and cutting edges for the likes of dozers and loaders.

Also on show will be the company's own Rockscot range of heavy duty hydraulic breaker steels for boom mounted hydraulic hammers, their after market range of hydraulic hammer replacements and full range breaker steels and contractor's tools for hand held pneumatic, hydraulic and electric handheld breakers. Rockforce is also the authorised Scottish dealer and distributer for the Padley and Venables range of drilling rods and tips, which will also be available. Founder, Mafdy Atalla, said, "There is no manufacturer in the UK for after market spare parts for the hydraulic hammers and we are working hard to introduce that as an alternative, viable, quality option." Speaking on their previous ScotPlant outing, Mafdy said,

Project Plant April/June 2016

"It did help us expand. We had 150 interested new companies we didn't have before through the last ScotPlant so obviously it is, for us, to increase our customer base and make ourselves known. "It is the most important point to meet customers and discuss their needs for the future, their current requirements and assess our performance with them and understand their needs more. "Although we are in constant contact with our customers, they are more relaxed and in the state of mind to discuss the business in the atmosphere of the exhibition, rather than visiting during business hours." The company will also be promoting the recent launch of their online store and is offering a 10 per cent discount on all orders received during the show.
