news Atlas Copco completes Edwards acquisition ATLAS Copco has closed the acquisition of Edwards Group Ltd.. Edwards is a technology and market leader in sophisticated vacuum products and abatement solutions. The products and services are integral to manufacturing processes, such as for semiconductors and flat panel displays, and are used within an increasingly diverse range of industrial applications. Following the acquisition Edwards will be delisted from the NASDAQ stock exchange. Atlas Copco has initially paid Edwards shareholders USD 9.25 per share. Once Edwards’s audited 2013 income statement is final, an additional payment of up to USD 1.25 per share will be made. The acquired business is now part of Atlas Copco’s new Vacuum Solutions division in the Compressor Technique business area.
Heart-warming news for JCB drivers JCB digger drivers have received some heartwarming news with the announcement that a new system is available on its iconic backhoe loaders that automatically heats the cab and engine before the operator arrives for work in the morning. The device means the machine now takes much less time to reach operating temperature in cold weather and is ready to start its daily shift much quicker – boosting productivity for owners and operators. JCB’s Chief Innovation and Growth Officer Tim Burnhope said, “This is another fantastic innovation on JCB’s backhoe loaders that will allow operators to simply get in and drive, without having to defrost windscreens or warm through the engine. As well as providing greater comfort for the operator it will cut downtime and boost productivity for the customer.”

£1.5m project to tackle Glasgow flood nuisance SCOTTISH Water is to implement a crucial environmental improvement project to tackle the issue of flooding in part of the Knightswood area of Glasgow. The investment of £1.5 million in improvements to the waste water network will help reduce the risk of flooding in the Shafton Road area, where more than 60 properties have experienced recurring flooding problems for a number of years. The project is part of a £250 million, fiveyear programme of work which will continue to improve river water quality, enable the Greater Glasgow area to grow and develop, alleviate sewer flooding and deal with the effects of climate change. To minimise the risk of flooding in the Shafton Road area, where there are 27 properties which have been affected by internal flooding and 35 affected by external flooding, Scottish Water will install a Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO) on the trunk sewer upstream on the waste water network in the Summerston area of Glasgow. The CSO, which is expected to take about six months to complete, will help protect the Shafton Road area from flooding during prolonged storm conditions by preventing the water levels in the sewer from reaching flood levels. Gary Caig, Scottish Water’s west area wastewater assets manager, said, “Scottish Water is committed to doing everything we can to
help communities and customers by playing our part in tackling flooding and dealing with the impact of heavy rainfall. “We are aware some properties in the Shafton Road area have suffered from recurring flooding over a number of years and we fully appreciate the inconvenience this can cause.” Scottish Water has carried out detailed investigations into the flooding in the area, including using computer modelling, and these have indicated the flooding has been caused by capacity issues in the sewer network. On occasions, floodwater in storm conditions or heavy rainfall flows into Shafton Road when a nearby sewer floods the network at Strathblane Gardens and Anniesland Business Park. The work will be carried out by contractors George Leslie.
MPA highlights cost burden THE Mineral Products Association has highlighted the regulatory cost burden on the sector - and has called on the government to act now to make it easier for businesses to invest. Nigel Jackson, Chief Executive MPA, said, “MPA remains extremely concerned at the identified cumulative cost burden on our sector arising from environmental and planning measures and the potential for these costs to increase even further in future years. There remains a continuing problem that each new measure which imposes new costs is evaluated and introduced without consideration being given to the cumulative impact of such legislation and regulation. “2014 needs to be the year when the penny drops within Government that regulatory costs need to be reasonable and proportion-
ate so that industry can invest with confidence. Such investment will be critical if our industry is to support and enable the economic recovery, notably in areas such as infrastructure, transport and housing development.” Key findings from the MPA’s latest assessment include: • Total sector costs of identified measures are £400 million pa now, likely to rise to £665 million from 2020. • Climate change and energy measures are currently equivalent to 17% of the Gross Value Added of the Cement industry, but this proportion could increase to 77% from 2020. • The costs to the Lime industry of Energy and Climate Change measures will increase from £8 million pa in 2013 to £49 million pa from 2020.

Hodge Plant moves to secure Case dealership
HODGE Plant has secured a dealership for Case Construction Equipment. The Blantyre-based sales and equipment rental firm operates a fleet of more than 100 machines. To facilitate further growth they have recently moved into new larger premises, enabling them to increase the size of their service workshops and further develop the parts facility. Hodge has also appointed two sales people to grow and develop the Case full product line business. Tina Neil will look after the west of Scotland with Neil Mackenzie covering the eastern
region. Alistair Hodge, Managing Director of Hodge Plant, said, “We’ve been looking for about two years now for a premium brand of construction equipment and Case certainly fits this category. "The Case full product line fits perfectly with our future plans for machinery sales. Case has a very loyal following in Scotland and we are delighted to be taking that forward. Our aim is to look after existing customers and to build on the success of the Case brand. “We will support the product 100%, and take on all existing
warranties. We have a solid base to work from and we are investing in the people and the facilities to build this business going forward.” Rick Morris, Network Development Manager at Case Construction Equipment, said, “We are absolutely delighted to be working with this company. I am confident they will do a great job for Case over the coming years, supporting Case customers in all business sectors.” Scott Freeman, Business Director for Case Construction Equipment, added, “I’m extremely pleased with the appointment of Hodge Plant. Scotland is a very important industry area for Case, as a full-line construction equipment manufacturer. Hodge Plant will enable Case to grow and truly show the customers the excellent benefits of the products we have, fuel efficiency and product reliability in particular. We are also looking forward to the forthcoming ScotPlant exhibition, where Case and Hodge Plant will be putting on a very large display of all products, and we are looking forward to welcoming existing and new customers to our stand.”
Terex sells truck plant to Volvo VOLVO Construction Equipment has agreed to buy Terex’s truck business, Terex Equipment Ltd, for $160 million. The deal, subject to regulatory approval, includes the main production facility in Motherwell and two product ranges that offer both rigid and articulated haulers. It also includes the distribution of haulers in the US as well as a 25.2% holding in Inner Mongolia North Hauler Joint Stock Co, which makes and sells rigid haulers under the Terex brand in China. If approved, the acquisition
adds some 500 employees to Volvo CE’s existing workforce Volvo CE’s president, Pat Olney said, “This is a strategic acquisition that offers Volvo CE considerable scope for growth. The addition of a well-respected range of rigid haulers extends the earthmoving options for customers involved in light mining applications at a time of renewed confidence in the sector. The addition of TEL’s articulated hauler range will enhance our position in this segment, particularly in high-growth markets. “We believe the Motherwell
facility and its global team members, as well as the current distribution partners, are valuable to the success of the business in the future.” The acquisition includes five models of rigid haulers, with proven designs and payloads ranging from 32 to 91 tons. The introduction of rigid haulers will extend Volvo CE’s position in light mining, an industry area that is complementary to general construction, oil & gas, aggregates & quarrying and road building – segments that Volvo CE is already active in.
Ayrshire upgrade benefits thousands
MORE than 7000 residents in parts of East Ayrshire are receiving clearer, fresher drinking water following the completion of a water mains upgrade. Scottish Water completed a £1.6m project that involved the upgrading of more than 30 miles of water mains in parts of the area served by the Corsehouse Water Treatment Works. The investment has also improved security of supply for customers in the Hillend area near Lugton where three miles of water mains which have been affected by bursts in the past were replaced. Jim Hassan, Scottish Water’s water operations manager, said, “We are delighted to have completed this major project to invest in key stretches of our water infrastructure in these areas. “Our substantial improvement work will help ensure a supply of clear, fresh drinking water for customers in the Fenwick, Dunlop, Lugton and Stewarton areas for years to come.” The work, which was carried out by contractors George Leslie, mainly involved a mixture of flushing or cleaning of stretches of mains and the installation of new plastic lining in other stretches. The project also included the replacement of cast-iron mains in the Hillend area with new plastic mains.

news Reasons to be fearful...
Reasons to be cheerful As a new year begins, the Construction Products Association has some good news for the industry with optimistic predictions for the sector's future SALES of construction products rose in Q4, driven by wider UK economic growth and key private construction sectors, together with strength in export markets. Product manufacturers are also anticipating further growth in sales, both domestically and abroad, over the next year. Those were the findings of the latest Construction Products Association State of Trade Survey. Dr Noble Francis, Economics Director at the Construction Products Association, said, “In previous surveys, private housing was the key driver of domestic demand; however, Q4 has seen construction growth spread to other key sectors such as private commercial, the largest construction sector, and infrastructure. “Demand for exports picked up in the second half of 2013 and manufacturers anticipate exports rising further in 2014, primarily due to wider economic recovery in key export markets combined with the relatively low value of sterling. “As a consequence, a rise in product sales during Q4 occurred for the majority of manufacturers, across both heavy and light side products. “Importantly, manufacturers reported that, overall, capacity is not a significant issue and is unlikely to be during 2014 despite an expected rise in demand. “Of concern, however, manufacturers reported
margins continue to be severely hindered by cost rises, especially in energy and transport fuel. In addition, manufacturers also reported that labour costs and materials costs rose in the fourth quarter.” Other key points include: • 67% of both heavy and light side manufacturers reported that sales rose compared with the third quarter. • 61% of heavy side manufacturers and 67% of light side manufacturers also reported that sales rose in Q4 compared to one year earlier. • For 2014 as a whole, 73% of heavy side manufacturers and 85% of light side manufacturers are anticipating a rise in sales. • 45% of heavy side manufacturers and 58% of light side manufacturers anticipated that exports would rise in 2014. • Over the next 12 months, 24% of heavy side and 25% of light side firms are anticipating that they will be operating at 90% capacity or above. • 82% of heavy side manufacturers and 86% of light side manufacturers reported rises in fuel costs. • 76% of both heavy side and light side manufacturers suffered from a rise in energy costs.
THE rising cost of materials and supplies is a growing threat to the construction industry. This was the outcome of the latest Scottish Construction Monitor, which found that confidence in the industry had fallen during the final three months of 2013. The Monitor is a quarterly survey of around 600 industry employers that make up the membership of the Scottish Building Federation. The survey asks members to rate confidence about their prospects over the next 12 months. The previous quarter’s survey found industry confidence had risen by 31 points compared to June 2013 to stand at PLUS 18, the first time a positive result had been recorded since the quarterly survey series began in 2008. The latest survey shows confidence remains in positive territory but has fallen back to PLUS 9. Construction employers were also asked about their experience of supply and material costs over the past five years and what impact these are having on their business. On average, companies indicated they spend 32% of annual turnover on materials and supplies. Almost two in three said rising supply costs have outstripped any increase in client fees over the past five years and have eroded profit margins. In general, 46% of respondents said they were ‘somewhat concerned’ about the impact of rising supply costs on their business and a further 34% described themselves as ‘extremely concerned’. SBF Managing Director Vaughan Hart said, “I think the slippage in confidence underlines the relative fragility of recovery in the industry and across the economy more generally. “That said, I’m encouraged we’re now seeing a second consecutive quarter when the overall industry confidence rating is positive.”

news Fatal fall from height leads to ladder warning
JCB CEO Graeme Macdonald is excited about the plans for the luxury golf course.
JCB tees off year with plans for £30m course CONSTRUCTION machinery giants JCB have announced plans to build a £30 million golf course, which they describe as "the biggest marketing tool" in the company's history. The course will be built next to its World HQ in Staffordshire to help build awareness of its brand. The proposals for a spectacular 18-hole championship golf course centre on 240 acres of rolling countryside. When completed in 2018, it is expected that up to 100 people will be employed in groundcare and hospitality roles. The course will be designed by European Golf Design – the golf course design company of IMG and the European Tour - best known for the 2010 course at Celtic Manor in Wales, host of the 2010 Ryder Cup. It will be built to tour-quality standard and could potentially host a major tour event, attracting competitors and spectators from all over the world. The plans have been conceived by JCB Chairman Lord Bamford and follow an announcement in December that JCB will invest £150m to build two new factories in Staffordshire and significantly increase production to meet an anticipated growth in
demand for its products. At the heart of this premier golf development is Woodseat Hall, an 18th Century mansion currently in ruins, but which will have a new lease of life under plans to renovate it as the course clubhouse, complete with a new luxury spa, leisure facility and five-star hotelstyle accommodation. Lord Bamford said, “JCB is a global manufacturer with a successful track record in growing sales in overseas markets. As part of our plans to increase manufacturing capacity and grow sales, we need to build an even stronger awareness of the JCB brand around the world. Golf is a truly global sport and is a perfect fit for JCB as a global manufacturer as we look to develop strong relationships with customers and dealers worldwide. I’m not a golfer myself but I’m excited by the opportunity it presents us in driving our future plans for business growth.” JCB Chief Executive Officer Graeme Macdonald said, “The course will be the biggest marketing tool available to JCB in its history, helping grow sales and create jobs. If the course were to host a major tournament, the television coverage would certainly put the JCB brand firmly on the world stage.”
THE Ladder Association has reminded companies of the importance of training when working at heights following the tragic death of a roofing contractor. Alan Beutner (58) died after a fall from a ladder and his employer was subsequently prosecuted by the Health and Safety Executive. The father of three fell just seven feet from an unsecured, domestic type ladder in Plymouth in June 2011 while decorating the exterior of a house. He fell onto a concrete path below and subsequently died of medical complications. “Ladders and stepladders are invaluable pieces of workplace equipment used by millions of people every day,” said the Ladder Association. “However, like all pieces of access equipment, they must be used safely and competently. “Training is the most important tool to help reduce accidents of this type. It makes sure that everyone has the necessary skills and knowledge to carry out their work safely, including knowing the right type of ladder to use for a specific task. “Ladder users, and those responsible for supervising their work, need to be properly trained in knowing how to manage the risks effectively. “If it’s right to use a ladder, it’s important to use the right ladder and to get trained to use it safely. Otherwise, in extreme cases, it can result in a tragic loss of life with shattering consequences.”
British asphalt market stable AFTER a fall of around 18% in asphalt demand during 2012, the market has begun to stabilise. Although the elimination of any further decline in demand is welcome, the asphalt market performed less well in 2013 than the aggregates and ready mix concrete sectors. Asphalt producers rely on government expenditure for much of their business and government finance remains tight. On the other hand, aggregates and concrete companies have been able to enjoy the recovery in the private housing sector in 2013. Although asphalt is used on housing estate roads, this represents a smaller part of the market than for other building materials.

Mind the GAP! Glasgow plant hirer in recruitment drive RECRUITMENT at Glasgow-based GAP, the UK’s largest independent plant, tool and specialist equipment hirer, is at an all-time high following a hugely successful year for the company. At the beginning of the year there were almost 100 open vacancies across all divisions which include plant and tool hire, non-mechanical plant and lifting hire & sales. 2013 saw GAP reap the benefits of a strategy to grow the business through diversification. Since the launch of the specialist divisions, non-mechanical plant and lifting, in 2010 and 2011 respectively, GAP has experienced annual growth of 14% (2012 and 2013) and turnover is expected to go beyond £100 million for the first time in the company’s history. The lifting division has been extremely successful and new depots have been opening at a very quick pace. Since its establishment in 2011, the company has opened 26 specialist lifting depots with a further eight locations to be added this year. The number of open vacancies at GAP is a direct result of the recent rapid growth experienced by the company. Catriona Dunning, Head of HR commented, “It has been a very exciting and busy time for recruitment at GAP over the past year as the company expands across the UK. “Currently, 40% of the open vacancies
are brand new positions that have been created to manage the expansion but also to enhance team structures for effective management”. GAP expects the growth of the business to continue throughout 2014 with the opening of more new depots and divisions planned. They opened the doors of its new super depot in Bournemouth on 11th November 2013 (pictured below). The new depot which houses all divisions of the GAP Group strengthens GAP’s presence in the South West, taking the total number of depots in the region to nine. A huge investment has been made in establishing this new facility which will provide enhanced service levels to local customers. The depot itself has seen extensive building work to modernise the facility which now boasts a large concrete yard, impressive workshop and spacious customer hire desk. In addition to this, plant and tool investment for the set up was in excess of £1 million and GAP will continue to invest with the growth of the business in the coming months. Andrew Feltham, South West Regional Director, said, “We already have a large customer base in and around the Bournemouth area, so the opening of this depot will provide our customers with improved logistical support and service levels.”
Work starts on motorway upgrades WORK is to begin imminently on a £500 million motorway project between Glasgow and Edinburgh. The project to manage and maintain a core section of the motorway network for 30 years will commence with the upgrade of nearly seven miles of the A8 dual carriageway between Baillieston and Newhouse, completing the M8 motorway between Glasgow and Edinburgh, along with major improvements to the M74 Raith Interchange and other key sections of the existing M8, M73 and M74. It will be the largest contract to be awarded as part of the Scottish Government’s £2.5 billion Non-Profit Distributing (NPD) model. NPD helps to deliver economies of scale and efficiencies for the public purse. Construction costs are now £105 million below original estimates following a robust competitive dialogue with the preferred contractor, SRP (Scot Roads Partnership Project Ltd). Following a significant level of international investor interest, funding will come from the European Investment Bank and a group of investors managed by Allianz Global Investors, one of the world’s leading integrated financial services providers. Transport Minister Keith Brown said, “The M8 M73 M74 Motorway Improvements Project is breaking new ground, which is great news for Scotland and great news for the jobs market. “It is the first UK roads project involving bond finance since the global financial crisis in 2008. It is also the largest NPD project to reach this stage and demonstrates confidence from the international investor community in the NPD model and that Scotland’s infrastructure is seen as a viable and desirable long-term investment. “This project shows that this NPD procurement process has driven down costs and will continue to deliver long-term benefits for the taxpayer. “The motorway link between the country’s two largest cities is absolutely pivotal to Scotland’s sustainable economic growth and the improvements made by this project will drive significant economic benefits for businesses and improve road safety and accessibility for road users the length and breadth of the country.”

Hewden's new welfare units are available in customer spec design.
Hewden have this year's exhibition all wrapped up MAKING a welcome return to ScotPlant this year is Hewden, who will be displaying their cabin vinyl wrap for site accommodation units. Having listened to customer feedback, which revealed they were interested in branded accommodation units, Hewden teamed up with a Midlandsbased creative agency to make it happen. The units provide a great opportunity to communicate to various audiences, whether that is clients, contractors, or the general public. The new wraps are an excellent branding and advertising opportunity for the building contractors, especially where they are on-site for a long time period with major build projects. Working with Birmingham based signage contractor Hollywood Monster, Hewden set a brief to create a unique full 32’ by 10’ wrap, in addition to a second option incorporating a framed space design that will
allow bespoke messages to be posted. Steve McNulty, Hewden Accommodation Manager, said, “Like the rest of my team, I’m passionate about our accommodation units. “We do recognise however that a 32’ grey cabin, may not, to the outside world, seem like the most attractive of products. “We have, for a number of years, offered customers the option of branding where we paint the unit in our customers’ livery. “We now know from our research that customers would like to see more interesting and exciting options and we are now able to deliver those.” Hewden Marketing Director Jeff Schofield added, “ The innovative concepts created by Hollywood Monster will offer Hewden customers a new and exciting option when considering hiring a branded accommodation unit. “The vinyl wrap can provide a real impact on site to contrac-

tors, clients and in some cases the general public. “We are especially pleased with the ad board option, as this is a cost effective, high impact way of displaying and communicating key on-site messages, which may be relevant to the project. “Examples of these could include health and safety, site rules, company on site communications or just a standard customer brand advert.”
Commenting on Hewden's return to ScotPlant, Jeff Schofield added, “Hewden has its heritage and culture firmly rooted in Scotland. “ScotPlant likewise remains a tradition in the Scottish construction and plant calendar. “Hewden is delighted to renew its association with the event and is looking forward to listening to customers old and new about our Core Fleet offer and recent investment in Scotland.” THE CONSTRUCTION EQUIPMENT EXHIBITION

on both ends, also enables safe and easy loading onto all transport trailers.” Finlay will also be showing off the new Terex Finlay 883 Spaleck, which they describe as the ultimate in mobile screening and separation technology. This new product offering is the result of a joint partnership between Terex Finlay and Spaleck.
At the heart of the mobile plant is the 2 deck German designed and constructed high performance screenbox. The unique stepped top deck design combined with state of the art flip flow technology on the bottom deck catapults the Finlay 883 Spaleck into a class of its own. Its processing capabilities and application flexibility make the
machine the only all in one mobile solution for processing difficult waste, recycling, slag, C&D, shredded metal, wood, compost, mulch, ores, coal and soil. The 3D top deck design provides maximum screening efficiency. The flip-flow bottom deck allows the machine to function in previously un-processable material.

Landmark Case - equipment giants take biggest ever stand CASE Construction Equipment will be occupying the largest stand in the history of ScotPlant. Case, together with Hodge Plant, their newly appointed dealer in Scotland, will be presenting an impressive line-up of machines. Designed for every sector of the construction, aggregate, quarrying and waste handling and recycling sectors, Case machines are renowned for being engineered to the highest standards. With 90% of all models now benefiting from Tier 4 interim engines, and the introduction of fuel saving SCR technology, the company continues to maintain its global position as manufacturers of intelligently designed machines. The heavy range line-up will include crawler excavators, wheeled loaders, wheeled excavators together with Case’s first Tier 4 final, crawler midi excavators. The compact range display will comprise skid steers loaders, mini excavators plus a backhoe loader. As well as the machines on show, Case will be hosting the first UK round of their popular Case Rodeo challenge. Operators are invited to take part in a series of tasks designed to test their skill and speed. The winners will then go forward to take part in the European final, which will be held in Paris.
There will be a comprehensive display of Case heavy line equipment, which offers customers productive, reliable, high performance, fuel efficient machines. The line-up will include the 621FXT and 821F wheeled loaders, which are equipped with Tier 4 Interim engines and benefit from fuel saving selective catalytic reduction (SCR) technology. These machines are fast and extremely productive, and with low operating costs they are ideally suited for a wide range of applications. Alongside will be the WX148 wheeled excavator, which has an exclusive three-pump hy-
draulic system, which delivers increased performance and control. The Case C series crawler excavator range will be represented at the exhibition, with the CX210C long reach and the CX350C models. These machines also benefit from Tier 4 Interim engines that offer increased efficiency and fuel saving benefits, through the use of the Case Intelligent Hydraulic System (CIHS), incorporating five energy saving systems. Case has led the way when it comes to cutting emissions and the company’s first Tier 4 final midi excavators, the CX75C SR and CX80C SR models will be part of the line-up. The versatility this range offers makes them the perfect option for urban construction sites, due to their leading emissions, performance and reduced dimensions. To ensure they meet the stringent exhaust standards they use cooled exhaust gas recirculation (CEGR), and a Diesel Oxidation Catalyst (DOC). This eliminates the need for a costly Diesel Particulate Filter or for fuel-consuming regeneration. The Case compact range
of machines deliver the perfect combination of strong performance, safety and complete controllability. There will be four skid steer models on display, the SR150, SR175 and SR200 radial lift models, together with the SV200, which has a vertical lift arm layout. These machines offer among the highest engine outputs on the market. The mini excavator line-up includes the zero swing CX26B, CX30B, CX50B models, which are ideally suited for working in confined spaces. Reliable engines and powerful hydraulics ensures excellent stability, and because they are equipped with Case heavy crawler excavator hydraulic technology, the high hydraulic power allows the use of larger buckets and operations are smoother under heavy loads. Completing the compact lineup display is the 590ST backhoe loader known globally as the ‘Construction King,’ ST powered by Tier 4 Interim, 3.4 litre turbocharged engine and incorporates cooled exhaust gas recirculation (CEGR). Atlas Copco separates construction and mining divisions
Atlas engineer working on compressor.

ATLAS Copco in the UK have separated the construction and mining service divisions, which they say will allow improved focus on the two sectors. The separate service divisions will have their own dedicated managers, sales teams and engineers. The changes were fully implemented by the start of February. The distinctly different mining and construction sectors are made up of separate customer bases with different service expectations. The company says dedicated service engi-
neers that specialise in either construction or mining equipment will be able to react more efficiently with specialist knowledge and skills. Peter Haddow will remain as Business Line Manager for Mining and Rock Excavation Service. Peter, with more than 19 years’ experience, has a proven track-record in the mining industry and is looking forward to giving it more focus. Gayle Palmer has been appointed as the new Business Line Manager for Construction Service. Gayle has a wealth of knowledge and
experience from her time as National Distribution Manager for Construction Equipment and in aftermarket sales. Kevin Prince, General Manager for Construction & Mining in the UK, said, “We forecast that in 2014, the UK and Irish construction markets will grow strongly. “As a result, the creation of a dedicated construction service department will enable us to best serve these markets, whilst continuing to provide the same high level of specialist support for our mining customers.”
JCB shopfloor employees accept 2.6% pay increase
JCB’s UK employees celebrated a £400 Christmas bonus. JCB shopfloor employees have voted to accept a 2.6% pay rise as part of a newlyagreed three-year wage deal. The agreement was reached following a vote by GMB members and resulted in around 3,200 employees receiving the pay rise from January 1.
The increase is linked to November’s Retail Price Index. Increases in 2015 and 2016 will also be linked to those years’ respective November RPI figures. The latest deal followed the expiry on December 31st of a three-and-a-half year pay deal agreed in 2010, which was the longest pay
deal ever agreed at JCB. Graeme Macdonald, who took over as CEO on January 1, said, “We are pleased to have reached agreement again on a long-term pay deal for JCB’s UK shopfloor employees. “It’s very welcome news and gives us the stability and forward visibility we need to plan ahead as we gear up to face the challenges and opportunities we will face in 2014 and beyond. The agreement also demonstrates a very responsible approach by all concerned.” The new deal comes on the back of an announcement that JCB is to invest £150 million in the next five years to create 2,500 jobs expanding its UK manufacturing operations. GMB Works Convenor Gordon Richardson said, “A three year pay deal does give us some guarantees for the future. This year’s team of GMB negotiators for the group has achieved an excellent outcome under some very tough bargaining conditions. The deal compares very favourably to those being struck at other companies both regionally and in the UK.” Meanwhile, JCB’s UK employees received a £400 Christmas bonus. Around 5,000 employees shared in the festive payout, worth a total of £2 million.

Highland wind farm brings jobs boost A new wind farm is set to be created in the Scottish Highlands. The Bhlaraidh wind farm will be developed by SSE Generation Limited and will have 32 turbines with a generating capacity of up to 108MW. The farm, located 4km north-west of Invermoriston, could power the equivalent of approximately 50,900 homes in the area. The construction phase, which is estimated to cost over £166 million, will sustain a huge number of jobs. The ongoing operations and maintenance of the project is expected to support the equivalent of 60 jobs, more than half of which will be based in the Highlands. The development will provide about £13 million over 25 years for community benefit projects, including a sustainable energy fund and skills and training initiatives. In addition, SSE is working with partners on a development initiative for the Great Glen (DIGG), the overall aim of which is to maximise the social, economic and community
benefits of renewable energy investment in the Great Glen over the coming decade. Energy Minister Fergus Ewing, who granted planning consent, said, “The Bhlaraidh wind farm will create jobs both in its construction and during its lifetime, and once up and running will save thousands of tonnes of carbon dioxide each year. With this wind farm we will now be able to produce enough electricity to power the equivalent of approximately 50,900 homes. “Wind farms like this provide considerable benefits to their local community, and play an important part in helping Scotland reach its target of the equivalent of 100 per cent of electricity demand generated from renewables. “The Scottish Government wants to see the right developments in the right places, and Scottish planning policy is clear that the design and location of any wind farm should reflect the scale and character of the landscape, as well as being environmentally acceptable.”

news Maybole Boost for Scottish mining as work resumes at Broken Cross bypass goes underground
Hargreaves Surface Mining has recommenced operations and will now speak to the site's ex-worforce.
OPERATIONS at Scotland's largest surface coal mine are back underway, with more than 100 jobs set to be created in the process. Broken Cross, near Douglas, ceased operation in April 2013 when previous owners, Scottish Coal, went into administration. The move led to considerable concern over the future of the famous site. However, South Lanarkshire Council successfully led negotiations with the bond holder for the mine, securing funds to deliver restoration. Now, Hargreaves Surface Mining Ltd, working in partnership with the council, has recommenced operations at the site, extracting the remaining coal and delivering the restoration of the mine. Hargreaves will now re-engage with the site’s former workforce and other experienced coal mining operatives throughout the country to utilise the extensive knowledge and capability that Scotland has. Michael McGlynn, Head of Planning and Building Standards
at South Lanarkshire Council, said, “The council is delighted to have been able to secure the funds that have enabled site operations at Broken Cross to resume. “Hargreaves Surface Mining will create vital employment for the area and, when mining operations are complete, ensure the restoration of the site. It is an encouraging boost as we start 2014.” Peter Gillatt, Managing Director for Hargreaves Surface Mining Limited said, "This is tremendous news for not only all at Broken Cross and Hargreaves, but also for the wider coal industry which still has a major part to play in all our energy needs. “Broken Cross has played a major role in the sector in Scotland for many years and to know that the site will be fully operation shortly is a huge boost and a true indication that the industry is back in business. We are grateful to all South Lanarkshire Council for all their assistance in making this possible.” Minister for Energy, Enterprise and Tourism Fergus Ewing said,
“The announcement that Broken Cross open cast mine has recommenced bringing back 100 much needed jobs to the area is very good news indeed. “Responsible restoration of sites is a critical component of successful open cast activity and this is a good example of how continuing surface mining operations and securing employment can go hand in hand with progressive restoration of the site. “I commend the Local Authority and Hargreaves for working together to make this happen. “This progress follows a number of positive steps forward which have been achieved following the cross party opencast coal mining taskforce which I have chaired.” The coal being extracted from Broken Cross will mainly be utilised by Scottish Power at Longannet Power Station. Hargreaves Surface Mining Limited is now on course to employ over 500 skilled workers throughout Scotland, in less than 12 months since taking over the former Scottish Coal and ATH Resources sites.
A full 1km section of the Maybole Bypass is to be constructed below ground level as it passes the north of the South Ayrshire town. The move comes following comments received after a public consultation. The enhancements will help screen the bypass from nearby homes. In addition the northern section of the new road will be slightly realigned to reduce the impact of the route on farmers’ fields. Transport Minister Keith Brown said, “Constructing a bypass at Maybole will help separate local traffic from traffic travelling further afield, including to the ports. This will lead to improved road safety for local communities and road users alike and provide better journey time reliability for motorists and businesses along the full length of the A77. “I am only too aware of the impacts of constructing a road near a rural community such as Maybole.”
Liebherr GB praised over apprentices LIEBHERR GB Ltd has been recognised in the prestigious Top 100 Apprenticeship Employers list. The list is compiled annually by the National Apprenticeship Service in partnership with City & Guilds. Apprentice Programme Manager of Liebherr GB Ltd, Lee Mason, said, “It is imperative that businesses see “growing their own” as the most viable way of creating a fully skilled and highly motivated workforce, which in turn brings major business benefits and allows us to be ahead of the game. There are so many keen, enthusiastic and energetic young people looking for an opportunity to shine.”

Crieff company fined after young worker loses leg A Crieff-based groundworks company has been heavily fined for safety failings after a 20-year-old worker had to have a leg amputated when it was crushed during the construction of Griffin Wind Farm in Perth and Kinross. Gregor Steele, from Perthshire, suffered severe injuries when his left leg was crushed between a tractor pulling a heavy water bowser and the bucket of a loading shovel on 3 September 2010. Mr Steele was airlifted to hospital where he underwent a nine-hour operation in an attempt to save his leg. Sadly, despite a second op, this proved unsuccessful and his leg was amputated above the knee. He was unable to work for two years and has since been fitted with a prosthetic limb. An investigation by the Health and Safety
Executive led to a prosecution of Gallagher Groundworks at Perth Sheriff Court. The court was told that between 13 August and 3 September 2010 the company failed to make a suitable and sufficient risk assessment for the work being carried out and failed to ensure the machinery being used was appropriate for the work, properly maintained and safety equipment was fully operative. Mr Steele had positioned the tractor to empty the bowser and used the handbrake on it. There was no parking brake, as this had been disabled by Gallagher Groundwork’s mechanic around five months previously. As he stood between the tractor and the loading shovel, the tractor was dragged backwards by the weight of the bowser, pinning him between the two.
HSE concluded Gallagher Groundworks had failed to ensure the tractor was capable of safely towing the weight of the loaded water bowser or ensure its ‘parking lock’ braking system was working correctly. The tractor had a maximum towable mass of three tonnes, well below the weight of the full bowser, estimated at around 12 tonnes. In addition, the bowser’s drum brakes were in a poor state of repair and could not be fitted to the tractor because the connecting hose was missing. Gallagher Groundworks was fined £32,000 after pleading guilty to breaching Section 2(1) of the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974. HSE Inspector Kerry Elliot said, “This was an entirely avoidable incident and the failures led directly to this life-changing injury.”

Scot who became JCB chief retires tion. He went on to become the company’s second longest serving CEO and in his 10 years in the role, sales broke the £1 billion mark for the first time, eventually reaching more than £2 billion by the time he stood down in 2008. He then became Chairman and CEO of JCB Inc based in North America. JCB Chairman Lord Bamford said, “During John’s time as Chief Executive, JCB achieved unprecedented sales growth and led the company’s transformation into a truly global company. I thank John for his contribution over the past 43 years and am delighted he will remain a Director of the JCB Group and Chairman of the Board of the JCB USA companies.” Under John Patterson’s leadership as Group CEO, JCB opened facilities in Savannah, Georgia; Sao Paulo, Brazil; Pune, India and Shanghai, China. John said, “I am proof there are no boundaries to career development at JCB and I have had an incredible time over the past 43 years. A Scot who rose through the ranks to become JCB's Group Chief Executive has retired after 43 years' service. John Patterson CBE (above), who started his career as a field service engineer, joined JCB in 1971 and went on to work in Canada and America before returning to the UK in 1988 as Managing Director of JCB Service. In 1993, John was appointed Managing Director of JCB Sales before becoming Group CEO – only the third person to hold the posi-
est construction equipment manufacturer and achieve market leadership for many of its products. “JCB has made excellent progress in North America in recent years but there are many more opportunities to be seized.” Meanwhile, colleagues have also bid a fond farewell to JCB Chief Executive Officer Alan Blake who has retired from the company after almost 25 years of service. Mr Blake became JCB CEO on January 1 2010. Dozens of friends and colleagues gathered at the World HQ in Rocester to say goodbye at a presentation. Chief Executive Officer Designate Graeme Macdonald, who took over as CEO, said, “Alan has contributed a huge amount to the growth and success of JCB over many years. The expansion projects Alan led enabled JCB to double its production from 36,000 to 72,000 machine over a five year period. “In addition to his vast achievements at JCB, he will also be remembered for his humility and for making time to speak to everyone.”

Why the future looks bright for plant hire Dave Irons of Embark Recruitment, who specialise in recruiting for the tool and plant hire sector, evaluates the industry’s prospects for the next 12 months and reveals to Project Plant why he is optimistic. THE well documented woes of the construction industry during the recession have undoubtedly had a knock-on effect upon many other industrial sectors, including my own tool and plant hire. With smaller construction companies struggling to survive, many independent hire outlets have closed or have been taken over by larger companies during the economic downturn. However, the signs for 2014 look encouraging for construction and its associated sectors. Trends in recruitment are often a significant indicator of an industry’s prospects, and the results of our recent survey of over 1,000 professionals working in tool and plant hire supports the view that this year is likely to see much-needed growth within the industry. The survey, carried out by Embark Recruitment canvassed company MDs, finance directors and senior managers about how their businesses had performed over the previous 12 months. More significantly, it also asked for predictions about future performance. The results were highly encouraging; both in their positivity and consistency of opinion. The belief that 2013 marked a key turning point for the plant hire industry (amongst others) was borne out by the fact that over three quarters of companies reported significant or above average growth within the turnover of their business from the previous year. Encouragingly, nobody reported a significant fall
in turnover. The increase in turnover was also reflected in the number of jobs created during the past 12 months. A high demand for personnel is always an encouraging sign and as recruiters, we have noticed a definite upsurge in competition for key workers. In the survey, just over 40% of companies reported that they had expanded their workforce as well as taking on new staff to replace employees who had retired or moved on. This replaces the practice of amalgamating positions when a member of staff left, reducing hours or simply leaving a position unfilled. Now, vacant posts are being rapidly readvertised and in many cases, companies are actively expanding their staff numbers to come in with new contracts. Furthermore, predictions for the next 12-18 months are similarly positive in tone with 59% predicting an overall rise in staff numbers, including 8% expecting a ‘significant’ rise in staff numbers. Construction and engineering projects such as HS2 and alternative energy sourcing as well as increased housing construction all bode well for the industry. In fact, 97% of those questioned said that they expected their overall turnover to increase over the coming year, with almost a third predicting ‘significant’ growth over the next 12 months. This optimism corresponds with recent
Bank of England forecasts and the recent Autumn Statement. Many companies are buoyed by the growth in confidence and actual orders over the past year, and are reflecting this into their growth plans for the coming period. Nobody knows what the coming months will hold and the recovery is not expected to be plain sailing, but companies from the tool hire and construction industry seem keen to make hay while the sun shines. These positive trends in staff recruitment are a key indicator that the future performance of the sector looks highly promising. However, one point to bear in mind is that with expectation this high within the industry, skills shortages could become a factor in hampering growth. In fact, 41% said that they are already experiencing some difficulty in filling skilled positions, whilst 34% say that it is normally a problem to find the right person. If growth continues as predicted, recruiting the right people for key positions could become increasingly difficult. However, many would say that this is a small price to pay for increased turnover, profitable companies and a rejuvenated industry. Dave Irons is a Director of Embark Recruitment (www.embarkrecruitment. co.uk) who specialise in recruitment for the tool and plant hire industry across the UK. David has worked in recruitment for this sector for over a decade.

news Training specialists claim best business award BLACKRIDGE-based construction and plant-training specialists Sibbald have won a prestigious award. The firm scooped the Best Business accolade at the West Lothian Chamber of Commerce Excellence Awards. This award recognises and rewards a local business that achieves outstanding customer service and operational excellence. David Sibbald, Managing Director for Sibbald said, “It is a tremendous honour to swoop the main award against such strong contenders.” David paid homage to his loyal and dedicated staff, without whom he said it wouldn’t have been possible. Andrew Morrell, the company’s Sales and Marketing Manager who was also on hand to collect the award, added, “David contin-
ues to deliver outstanding service to both the local and wider communities and can be proud of what he has achieved in his 40 years of business. “However, like David mentioned it’s all down to the hard work from our outstanding team we have here at Sibbald.” Dawn Dickson, from Davidson Chalmers LLP, who sponsored the Best Business award, said, “It’s great to see an established business celebrating its 40th year taking this accolade. Sibbald is an example of how hard work, innovation and investment can lead to real success. “The company has thrived through its strong relationships with organisations such as Skills Development Scotland, West Lothian Council and Scottish Enterprise, with whom they’ve developed close working partnerships.”
Andrew Morrell, Dawn Dickson and David Sibbald celebrate the win.

No messing with de-dusting system A self-contained personnel de-dusting unit, ideal for construction sites as well as the quarry and mining industries, has been introduced by Air Control Industries of Axminster. Blower powered, it removes dust and debris effectively and safely with none of the potential health hazards and risks associated with compressed air alternatives (authorised or not). The ACI Clean Down Booth is a selfcontained unit incorporating the company’s internationally proven JetBlack personnel de-dusting system. This delivers a high volume of air at low pressure (2.52 PSI), sufficient to remove dust and fibres effectively and safely, even when directed at exposed skin. Air is directed using a hand-held gun
attached to a flexible hose. Personnel can use the booth without removing their PPE equipment and expect to complete a clean-down in about 20 seconds. In addition to the JetBlack dust removal system, there is an externally located blower-powered exhaust system which draws the dislodged dust downwards away from individuals and out through a grille floor. The dust is then either collected in bags in dust receptacles or ducted into extraction systems. To be compliant with the USA’s OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) requirements, the JetBlack is supplied with a chip-guard. The chip-guard is supplied as standard in the USA but is optional elsewhere.

Real-time vision system is keeping an eye on safety AN advanced camera and monitor system which feeds constant, real-time vision and detection information of the working area to vehicle operators is improving safety and efficiency of vehicles for numerous construction companies. The innovative system, called RadarEye, was introduced to the market by Orlaco. It was recently used to great effect by Sibelco Benelux. Sibelco extracts and refines various types of sand and minerals, mostly high quality silica sand for industrial use. The firm first noticed RadarEye during a trade event for the road transport sector. At that time only one wheel loader at their new plant in Maasmechelen, Belgium, was equipped with a vision testing system of another brand, which consisted of two ultrasonic sensors and three cameras. While that system was good in its own right, it had difficulty giving the loader operators a clear picture through the dusty, sandy environment they work in. Sibelco arranged for a trial run of the RadarEye system. An Orlaco service team went to their plant in Maasmechelen and installed RadarEye on one of their wheel loaders. In order to fairly evaluate the two systems, the other wheel loader used the ultrasonic system. The operators were able to compare the performance of the two systems during a regular working day. RadarEye came out on
top because of its ease of use, clear on board screen reception, and ability to “see” clearly through the sand and dust. Sibelco are now gradually installing RadarEye systems onto all their wheel loader trucks throughout their Benelux locations as it seems to make a significant difference to their loader operators. One such operator is Jos Denneman. Jos has been operating wheel loaders for Sibelco for 25 years and is hugely satisfied working with the Orlaco RadarEye vision system. “The system is a solid, no-nonsense vision system
that helps me get the job done. It makes my work in the cab more comfortable because I don’t have to twist and turn to check that I’m positioning the truck accurately. The real-time feedback I get on the large dashboard display is very sharp, and the built-in warning signals let me know what’s behind me when I’m backing up, and when to stop. All in all, it’s just a safer and more efficient way to work.” Orlaco technicians have agreed to come to various Sibelco sites and perform yearly safety checks on each and every RadarEye system.
Making a big noise in the workplace UNDERLINING its position as the first company to develop an all-digital, ‘badge-style’ personal sound exposure meter for use around the workplace, Casella is reporting growing demand for its lightweight yet robust dBadge noise dosimeter series. Sales of the popular and well-proven instrument, which weighs just 71g, continue to go from strength to strength. To mark the dBadge series’ popularity, the leading specialist in high performance occupational and environmental risk measurement solutions is offering a free dBadge when customers buy any complete K1 kit comprising a dBadge, calibrator, three-way charger, Insight software, carrying case and USB interface cable. The offer applies to both Intrinsically Safe (IS) and non-IS mod-
els. Neal Hill, Casella’s Product Marketing Manager, said, “Thousands of companies worldwide have purchased our dBadge over the past six years as part of their commitment to assessing and monitoring noise in the workplace and compliance with Workplace Noise Regulations." The dBadge uses the latest digital technology and features a compact, rugged and lightweight design. It is completely cablefree, unlike traditional dosimeters, and doesn't require any other equipment. It is simply operated by two keys on the side of the instrument and offers an automatic calibration function. The dBadge has a 'fuel gauge’ to show memory and battery status information, whilst a 28-hour battery life and
large memory are sufficient to perform several consecutive shift measurements without charging or downloading.

Shining beacon of Hope Sandvik in Varel swoop
HOPE Construction Materials celebrated their first anniversary at the start of the year - and what a year it's been for them! Since launching in January 2013, the company has sold two million cubic metres of concrete – enough to build 22 Wembley Stadiums – 1.3 million tonnes of cement and four million tonnes of aggregates. Hope was launched following the acquisition of 180 nationwide operational assets, from the South Coast to the Scottish Highlands and from West Wales to East Anglia. These include concrete plants, quarries, depots and the UK’s biggest cement plant in
Hope Valley, Derbyshire. The deal was seen by many as a vote of confidence in the future of British construction. Hope has since grown rapidly to become a major player in the industry, supplying cement and concrete to more parts of Great Britain than any other independent business. In 2013 the firm turned over almost £300 million, a figure chairman Amit Bhatia believes is testament to the dedication of the 800-strong workforce. He said, “It was always going to take time to stablise the business and start to optimise the way we run things, particularly with the scope and size of the business, but we’re pleased with our progress so far. “When we entered the market a year ago we had our sights set on challenging the accepted norms in this industry. Now we’re making changes to improve service and we will continue to make this a valuable point of difference for our customers. “British manufacturing is something I’ve been passionate about for a long time."
SANDVIK has agreed to buy Varel International Energy Services Inc. The acquisition price amounts to approximately 740 million USD. The closing of the acquisition is subject to standard regulatory approvals and certain environmental due dilligence. Varel is a global supplier of drilling solutions focusing on drill bits, downhole products for well construction and well completion. The key customer segment is in the Oil and Gas sector, with some exposure to the mining and construction industries. The manufacturing sites are located in Aberdeen, Houston (USA), Matamoros (Mexico), Tarbes (France) and Kurgan (Russia). The head office is based in Carrollton,Texas, USA. Revenues in 2013 were approximately 340 million USD and number of employees about 1,300. The acquisition is expected to be slightly accretive to earnings per share already in the first year.

transport Young drivers gearing up for success
Scotland welcomes its first Euro 6 Scania truck THE Malcolm Group has become Scotland's first operator of a Euro 6 Scania truck with the addition of a G 450 LA6x2/2MNA tractor unit to its long haul distribution fleet. Supplied by Scania (Great Britain) Limited's Bellshill branch, the vehicle forms part of an order for 36 tractor units and five rigid tippers. Distinguishing it from other vehicles in the company's 475-strong fleet, the new Euro 6 Scania has an eye-catching metallic silver and blue livery with red bumper and side-skirts. “As a long established user of Scania trucks – our history with the marque goes all the way back to our 1967 Scania-VABIS LB76 – we are delighted to be the first Scottish operator to introduce a Euro 6 Scania truck into service,” said The Malcolm Group's Chief Executive, Andrew Malcolm. “Over the years, Scania trucks have consistently proved themselves to be extremely reliable vehicles with excellent aftersales support and good residuals, which is why we keep buying them. “While it is early days for our new Euro 6 vehicle, the initial indications are very promising. “The truck is being worked hard and our drivers have no complaints.” The Euro 6 engine fitted to Malcolm Group's new vehicle is a 13-litre, six-cylinder model from Scania's second-generation Euro 6
range. Designated DC13-24, the unit delivers 450 hp (331 kW) at 1,900 rpm and 2,350 Nm of torque (1,733 lbf.ft) between 1,000 and 1,300 rpm. In 2011, Scania became the first manufacturer to present Euro 6 trucks. Since then, more than 5,000 Scania Euro 6 vehicles have been introduced into service, providing Scania’s Research and Development engineers with an invaluable bank of operational data and experience, which in turn has led to the introduction of the company’s second-generation range of high performance, fuel efficient Euro 6 engines. Today, that range comprises 13 variants providing power outputs from 250 to 730 horsepower, with a model suitable for virtually every heavy transport application. Now one of the UK’s leading providers of logistics, construction and vehicle maintenance services, The Malcolm Group traces its history back to the 1930’s, when Donald Malcolm inherited the family business. From a single truck and a horse and cart, he built the company up to a 37-strong vehicle fleet by 1960, at which time the firm was acquired by Grampian Holdings. In 2002, Grampian Holdings plc was renamed The Malcolm Group plc and in May 2005 The Group was once again taken into private ownership by the Malcolm family.
SCANIA’S Young European Truck Driver competition is returning for a sixth time in 2014. Aimed at promoting the highest standards of driving and road safety among Europe's young drivers, entrants from 26 countries will compete throughout the year for the ultimate prize of a new Scania R-series truck worth 100,000 Euros. “Young European Truck Driver has been the world's premier driving skills competition for more than ten years now,” said Scania (Great Britain) Limited Managing Director Claes Jacobsson. “During this time many thousands of young drivers have participated, and all have worked hard to develop their performance behind the wheel as they endeavour to be crowned Europe's top young truck driver. “We are immensely proud of this record, as it means commercial vehicle drivers the length and breadth of Europe are now driving more safely.” Young European Truck Driver is open to all LGV C+E drivers aged 35 or under. Drivers registering for the event are asked to create an online profile, after which they take a multiplechoice driving-knowledge test from which the 12 leading entrants will be determined. These top 12 performers will be then invited to a driving skills event at Scania’s Milton Keynes HQ on Sunday 27 July. Here, the participants will be whittled down to 'six of the best', each of whom will then be invited to take part in the Young European Truck Driver UK Final. This event will be staged at Truckfest Original on 30/31 August at the Newark & Notts showground. At this event the UK's overall winner will be selected. He or she will then travel to Sweden as the guest of Scania (Great Britain) Limited in order to take part in the European Final (12/13 September), which is where the event’s top prize of a new Scania R-series truck will be awarded. In addition to the top prize, the event offers great rewards at every stage of the competition.

ENVIRONMENTAL protection specialist Darcy Spillcare Manufacture has announced the launch of a new and improved Environmental Management System to contain spills and firewater on sites for safe disposal later, thus preventing environmental liability, fines and prosecutions and reducing spill clean-up costs. Draintector™ is already installed at a host of sites across the UK and offers considerable
operational advantages over less advanced systems. It can be operated manually on-site via a control panel or a handheld controller, off site via GSM or automatically linked to monitors such as PH or your fire alarm system. The updated Draintector™ system seals drains within seconds and retains spillages or firewater. It tells you it is sealed and automatically tests itself monthly or weekly.

MB Surfacing has taken delivery of the first ever Volvo P6870C wheeled paver to be sold in Great Britain. The machine was chosen for the excellent level of after sales support and service afforded to the company’s existing twoyear-old ABG 6870 according to Managing Director Martin Bell. “We have been impressed with the performance, reliability and the quality of our existing 6870. “My operating crews appreciate the machine’s low noise levels, manoeuvrability and easy to use controls. Underpinning all of that is the excellent level of service support we get from the team at Volvo which is why we’ve decided to add the latest wheeled paver to our fleet.” MB Surfacing will also benefit from some significant improvements introduced on the P6870C with up to 30% fuel savings and further reduction in noise on and around the machine bringing it down to just 79dB(a) at the operator’s ear – an important point for the company who specialise in local authority, urban HIRE and private contracts as well as contracting to larger road builders throughout Essex and East Anglia. The new P6870C wheeled paver maintains many of the features originally introduced on the ABG 6870, for instance continuous independent traction
control over all six wheels. Now powered by a Volvo D6 Stage IIIB compliant 175hp engine, the P6870C is further enhanced with the EPM II – an electronic paver management system which incorporates a ‘Settings Management’ system allowing the operator to store up to twelve parameter settings for the major functions such as screed temperature, tamping & vibrating, conveyor, auger & paving speeds. The machine retains other features such as the ‘Smart Power’ offering optimum power for the job in hand together with 6x6 ‘Smart Drive’ technology for unparalleled traction. Even on the most difficult bases, tractive forces are automatically adjusted according to the weight of material in the machine’s 12 tonne capacity hopper. As an added safety feature, MB Surfacing has specified the fitment of traction isolator switches which are mounted on either side of the hopper. In an event of an emergency or an operator working in front of the machine, the isolator switches will when selected, de-activate propulsion of the machine with a warning being shown on the EPM display. The machine demonstrates a high degree of manoeuvrability thanks to the ‘Active Steering’ feature with an inside turning radius of just 2.5 metres.

Cooking with gas thanks to TT-UK suction excavators TT-UK has delivered bespoke suction excavators to two of Scotland Gas Network's operating centres - one in Glasgow and the other in Edinburgh. The machine construction company has had a positive working relationship with SGN since the early 1990’s and following initial discussions back in August 2012, have recently been working in conjunction with them to design and deliver two TT-UK/RSP ESE 26/6 suction excavators. TT-UK/RSP supplied the ESE 26/6 excavators, which are fitted with a high speed single fan and a 4.1 metre power arm. The units have a 6³ container and are also fitted with an on board gas detection system and
a safety hand rail system to allow safe access on to the roof of the 6³ container. Rygor Commercials supplied the Mercedes Benz Actros 2646, 6 x 4 chassis cabs that the suction excavators are mounted onto. The suction excavators have been supplied with a range of non-evasive tooling such as the Air Lance and Air Knife which are both manufactured from nonconductive materials. TT-UK not only delivered the two units, but also provided a two-day intensive EUSR accredited training course in Edinburgh for five operators. This consisted of one day theory and practical with the second day practical concluding with a

All the people we employ are from the local area and we want to support the local community through sponsorship of local football teams and youth clubs." AB2000 has operations at Cambuslang, near Glasgow, and Inverness but Ellon Plant will remain in Aberdeenshire. “We’re expanding the product range and Ellon Plant now has access to the full range of larger operated plant and equipment owned by AB2000," added David. Ellon Plant Hire's target markets is to supply to companies involved in house building, renewable energy and general construction but the company works with local businesses from small one-man bands to national
companies. David has good experience of the Scottish Plant Hire Industry, and was recruited by AB2000 in 2012 to expand the firm’s operations in the North of Scotland, initially at Inverness and now Aberdeen. He added, “Last year we opened a new depot in Inverness, starting from nothing and are now employing over 60 people. I’m sure Ellon Plant Hire will be every bit as successful as Inverness. Significant new investment in Ellon Plant’s plant fleet incudes a range of 5T to 20T excavators, and we are also introducing articulated dumpers into the fleet. Adam Bruce (MD of AB2000) has given 120% backing to the Company and Arlene Harrison staying with the company as Plant Manager has been a huge advantage in developing the business.”

Kubota not horsing around KUBOTA has again pledged its support to the annual London International Horse Show, taking its place as one of the key sponsors for the event. The show marked the second successive year that Kubota, manufacturers of tractors, groundcare and construction products, has sponsored the event. Five machines in its high performance range were on show, each tasked with setting out and clearing the event space for the duration of the equestrian showcase. This included models from Kubota’s compact STV series, B Series and mid range L series tractors. “The International Horse Show is a fantastic and prestigious event, and one we were honoured to be a part of for the first time,” said Dave Roberts, Managing Director of Kubota UK. “Such was the success of our sponsoring last year, we were eager to get involved again, alongside a host of other high profile companies. It’s a great opportunity for the Kubota brand to show off our machines to the millions of people worldwide who will tune in for the event.” Not only does Olympia give Kubota a global platform – some 38m viewers tune in each year to watch the events - spectators also have the chance to see the machines in action, moving jumps and apparatus to grade the performance arena.

Demand for eco units on the rise A number of blue-chip construction firms are reaping the benefits of Wernick Hire’s new GreenSpace™ Eco accommodation units. The energy efficient units are proven to be up to 69% more energy efficient than standard site accommodation. Interest in them has intensified since the government announced plans to reduce carbon from the construction and operation of the UK’s infrastructure assets. The ‘Infrastructure Carbon Review’ sets out a series of actions for government, clients and suppliers to reduce up to 24 million tonnes of carbon and save the UK £1.46 billion a year by 2050.
The GreenSpace™ units are designed to provide high quality site accommodation, whilst allowing clients to reduce their carbon footprint and their energy bills. They can be fitted out to provide welfare accommodation, office space, meeting rooms, canteens and many other facilities on-site. Wernick Hire has developed the GreenSpace™ range following months of consultation with key clients and construction companies who are members of the UK Contractors Group (UKCG). To meet the need for energy efficient site accommodation, they have already invested over £7.2 million in the range. Morgan Sindall has hired a
two-storey GreenSpace™ building from Wernick Hire as part of a £70 million project to regenerate Longbridge town centre in Birmingham, helping to create a thriving commercial, leisure and retail destination. BAM Construction also chose a triple stacked GreenSpace™ Eco cabin complex for a £24.7 million redevelopment of the Brynmor Jones Library at the University of Hull. A triple-storey 18-bay AV-
flex™ GreenSpace™ building is in use in Nottingham where VINCI Construction UK is constructing student accommodation blocks. Michael Thistlethwaite, Managing Director of Wernick Hire said, “There is increasing demand for environmentally responsible site accommodation amongst major contractors, especially since the government published recommendations to reduce carbon in infrastructure.”

Strategic alliance formed with multi-million pound fleet deal HOPE Construction Materials has invested in a new fleet of quarry machines in partnership with Finning. Finning has provided a range of new technology, which will enable Hope, the independent construction materials supplier, to manage this new fleet to achieve maximum productivity, flexibility and fuel efficiency. The deal will see Hope making an entrepreneurial move by taking the operation of its new fleet of 21 Cat® machines inhouse, supported by a bespoke fleet management package from Finning. The machines will be used at a range of Hope’s aggregates and cement sites across Derbyshire, South Yorkshire, Manchester and Bedfordshire. With a focus on fuel efficiency, the new fleet boasts the UK’s first Cat 988K wheel loader, which will be joined by two Cat 966K XE’s and eight Cat 775G off highway trucks. By combining these highly fuel efficient machines with training, telemetry and unrivalled service support from Finning, Hope Construction Materials aims to
show the industry the benefits of taking an innovative in-house approach to fleet management. With a goal of achieving a significant reduction in cost per tonne, the new approach is a complete change, set to give Hope a real advantage and profile for its ‘different’ approach. As part of the multi-million pound fleet management package, Finning will provide a full turnkey support package to Hope Construction Materials. This will include onsite EcoDrive™ operator training for Hope operators and site managers, equipment monitoring from its Finsight condition monitoring team and the use of the Vital Information Monitoring System (VIMS) data through Caterpillar’s MineStar system. The overriding fleet management package will cover every unit in the new fleet, which also includes two Cat 390D LME excavators, two 740B ADT’s, two 980K wheel loaders, a D6T LGP dozer, a 962K high lift wheel loader, a TH407C and a TH414C telehandler. Commenting on the deal, Simon Philips, Managing Direc-

tor, Concrete, Aggregates and Asphalt Division, Hope Construction Materials, said, “With our aim to become a reliable and responsible business, when it came to our mobile fleet strategy, we saw there was a clear opportunity to have a greater control and understanding of this key function. “Following detailed analysis, we decided to bring the operation of our mobile fleet completely in-house. We wanted to take a new approach to fleet modelling that would allow us to optimise site by site, but also have the flexibility to move equipment across our entire operations. “So when we went out to the market, we were not just looking for the best purchase price of a machine, we wanted to work with a supplier that was much more aligned with our entrepreneurial approach. “I was delighted with the Finning proposal; they demonstrated great knowledge of our quarry operations and worked with us to identify a complete fleet management package, integrating with our team and sharing knowledge. With access to the extensive Caterpillar range and finance from Cat Financial, Finning was not only able to match machine to machine; its team was also able to
optimise the whole production and investment cycles. “As we all know the whole life cost of plant and equipment is critical, and when we assessed this with Finning, we looked at everything from haul roads, tyre wear and fuel usage to utilisation and availability of the mobile plant supplied by Finning, and the matching of this to ensure we utilise our fixed processing plant. “When Finning introduced us to Eco-Drive, we saw a clear opportunity to combine operator training with an enhanced fleet, to get the most out of our investment. “Throughout the tender process, we felt we could place our trust in Finning to work with us and develop what will be the most fuel efficient fleet and operator team in the UK, backed by a solid support package.” John Vardy, Finning General Manager Mining said, “As Hope has seen, Finning and Caterpillar can combine our UK and global expertise to help customers optimise performance. “In practical terms, what this actually means is that in addition to simply offering a managed fleet maintenance solution, including the supply of equipment, parts and service, we take a consultative, training led approach.”

Best things come in small pa JCB is set to launch their latest machines at Conexpo 2014 in Las Vegas. The telescopic handler producer is unveiling a new compact model to add to its growing Hi-Viz Loadall range for construction. The launch of the 525-60 brings full-size telehandler performance and features to the compact sector. With a maximum lift height of 6m and a load capacity of 2.5 tonnes, the 525-60 is just 1.8m wide and 1.91m tall, allowing access to multistorey car parks and permitting operation in confined site conditions. The 525-60 Hi-Viz replaces the 524-50, 527-55 and the 520-50 rearengined models, with a modern side-engine mount design. This permits a low boom pivot point for maximum stability and increased visibility to the rear and across the boom. Powered by a new Tier 4 Final, 2.5-litre, JCB Diesel by Kohler four-cylinder engine, the 525-60 delivers 55kW (74hp) for easy lifting performance and rapid travel. As with other JCB engines, there is no requirement for a
diesel particulate filter or an SCR system to meet the Tier 4 Final emissions regulations. This means that the JCB machine has a service-free emissions control system, reducing operating costs and complexity for customers. A simple to operate two-stage hydrostatic transmission offers travel speeds of up to 25km/h and the short wheelbase makes the 525-60 an extremely manoeuvrable machine. Equipped with an 80 litre/min hydraulic pump, the machine delivers auxiliary hydraulic power for a sideshift attachment carriage. Customers can choose between JCB’s Q-fit carriage or a skid steer compatible attachment interface for ultimate versatility and fleet acceptance. All boom functions are controlled by a single servo lever joystick, with proportional control of the two-stage boom extension allowing smooth operation and fine control for the operator. The machine is available with a choice of canopy or fully glazed cab, with the
option of air conditioning. Serviceability is much improved with the side-mounted engine installation and, depending on territory, the machine can be supplied with JCB’s LiveLink telematic monitoring system for maximum fleet visibility and maintenance control. Options include full road light kits and screen guards for harsh working environments. JCB is also launching its latest rough terrain fork lift range, complete with the new Tier 4 JCB Ecomax diesel engine. The highly efficient four cylinder engine delivers the same 55kW (74hp) output as the previous Dieselmax motor, but meets the Tier 4 emissions regulations without the need for a diesel particulate filter or an SCR exhaust after-treatment system, reducing cost and complexity for customers. The Ecomax engine will be fitted to all four models in JCB’s RTFL range: the 926, 930, 940 and 950. The JCB Ecomax engine features a highly efficient combustion design that not only

packages reduces exhaust emissions, but also delivers improved fuel consumption, reducing running costs for operators. With ultra-high fuel injection pressures, variable geometry turbocharging and cooled exhaust gas recirculation, the JCB Ecomax engine meets Tier 4 emissions standards with no requirement for a costly DPF or for complex after-treatment. The Ecomax engine runs on standard lubricating oils, so there is no requirement for expensive CJ4 oils. Service intervals remain at 500 hours, apart from an additional crankcase ventilation filter that requires a change at 1,500 hours. Available with a four-speed Synchro Shuttle transmission for maximum durability and ease of use, the revised machines feature increased hydraulic flow, now 76 litres/min, for faster lift and lower cycle times, increased productivity and reduced fuel consumption. The 926, 930, 940 and 950 models have lifting capacities of 2,600-4,500kg with mast lift heights of 3.6-6.7m. All machines benefit

ALLU Group vowing to stay ahead of the game ALLU Group will also be among the 2,400 exhibitors at Conexpo. They will launch their new M series mobile screener crusher at the event. Also visible for the first time will be their light ALLU DL series screening buckets that make the perfect tools for landscaping purposes. After years of studies ALLU is launching a brand new ALLU M -Series for the mining sector. The official launching of the unit will be held on Wednesday March 5th. The new M Series includes three models for excavators from 50 t to 200 t and three models for wheel loaders from 30 t to 100 t. They forecast that the M series units will change the whole material processing concept in the mining sector. Now the machine is brought to the material and not the other way around. Substantial savings are achieved with this new method of working. The new DL -Series includes three new models. They widen the complete D -Series product range screener-crusher and fine screening buckets. The core of the new DL -Series is the unique top screen technology, developed by ALLU. This construction is clog free and ensures good capacity even with wet materials. The ALLU DL -Series screening buckets can be installed to 4 - 12 t excavators and 2 - 8 t loaders. The DL units are on display and working on the demo area through the

whole exhibition. In the mass stabilisation process dry powder like binder is fed by an ALLU PF pressure feeder and mixed to the soft and/ or contaminated soil by an ALLU PMX mixing head mounted on an excavator. The end result is that soil can be strengthened or encapsulated, making it suitable for further use. The mixing head can be positioned to the right place on the work area with the help of the new ALLU 3D Positioning System and the driver knows all the time where the mixing unit head is located underground. The system consists of four modules:
computer unit with software, touch screen, base station and gps-antennas utilizing gps -signals. The new system eases the mixing work and at the same time ensures homogenous mixing results and accurate binder feeding on each cell/block. The accurate binder feeding also reduces the consumption of the expensive binder. The advanced reporting with ALLU program reports data from each block and cell processed. The ALLU 3D positioning system can be mounted on every ALLU stabilisation system, old or new.

Holland loader proves a g-Rand choice A Holland W230C Wheel Loader is helping to improve productivity and reduce fuel costs for the Rand brothers. The W230C, which benefits from SCR Technology and ECOSHIFT transmission has also been fitted with a specially constructed 7 tonne hi-tip bucket. The machine, which was supplied by New Holland dealer Ernest Doe, is being used to handle up to 100,000 tonnes of grain at Rand’s farms storage facility at Hatchpen near Royston. Although an agricultural application, the sheer size of the grain facility meant industrial size equipment was needed to handle the grain quickly and efficiently. Usually more associated with construction applications, the W230C wheel loader is proving to be the ideal solution as far as Rand is concerned. New Holland wheel loaders are equipped with host of advanced engineering features. The rear mounted engine and Selective Catalytic Reduction technology means the engine combustion is optimised for efficiency as well as delivering increased power, resulting in a reduction of up to 15% in fuel consumption. The ECOSHIFT transmission system has a 5-speed torque converter with a lock-up auto or manually activated, from 7 km/h up to 40 km/h. This minimizes losses during travel and uses engine de-rating to make each gearshift smoother.

There's snow stopping Case loaders A Case machine has been helping out at one of Europe’s major skiing events. The Ski Flying World Cup, which took place from 1012th January in Austria, attracted top athletes from all over the world. To ensure perfect preparation of access roads and parking areas, a 15 tonne, Case 721F wheel loader supported the team of six Steyr tractors. Markus Meyer, Business Director of CNH Industrial Construction for Germany, Austria and Switzerland said, “We have chosen the 721F due to its strong performance and ideal shovel-size to support our colleagues from Steyr. “In addition, our engage-
ment enhances our growing strength in Austria. “At the end of 2013 we opened a new Case store close to Vienna to substantially increase our business in this important market.” The Case wheel loader in Kulm was well prepared for its demanding tasks. With its 195 HP, strong hydraulics and a standard shovel of 2,7m3, the 721F is ideally suited to challenging conditions, and the smooth control showed its strength during the creation and marking out of large spaces. The new heavy-duty axles and the automatic 100% differential lock at the front axle ensure optimal traction in wintery conditions.

Dependability key to the right machine CONSTRUCTION materials manufacturer Hills Quarry Products Limited has purchased a machine from Bell Equipment for the first time, after a successful demonstration confirmed the reliability and performance of their wheeled loaders. The Wiltshire-based company made its decision to buy a Bell L2606E loader for the management loading and stockpiling of aggregates at its Shorncote quarry, at South Cerney, Gloucestershire. “Any loader chosen for use by The Hills Group needs to be a strong work-horse, and a reliable machine,” said Bell Equipment’s national accounts manager, Robin Piper. “So we’re delighted that our L2606E has made the grade, and been incorporated into the firm’s
26-stong wheeled loader fleet.” Andrew Liddle, Hills Quarry Products Limited’s production manager, added, “Our Shorncote quarry is a highly productive site, delivering 330,000 tonnes of aggregate material every year; so with such demanding levels of productivity we can only use truly dependable loading machinery – equipment that has the capability to perform and won’t let us down.” The Hills Group’s research process in sourcing the right machine to load sand and gravel at the Shorncote quarry face was extensive. The company trialled models from four other manufacturers alongside the Bell L2606E loader, as part of the process to select a machine that could cope easily with the quarrying challenges
presented. Andrew added, “We were impressed with Bell Equipment from the start. “Their level of commitment and service had notable strength, and the quality of their equipment was easily on a par with machines produced by some of the other big name competitors.
“We added this to the considerable value of Bell’s L2606Es, in terms of the number of features included in the machine specification as standard, and it was clear that this machine has been produced by a quality supplier, is ideal for task, and has the potential to offer a superb return on investment.”

cranes & lifting equipment
Peruvian partnership for UK crane and hoist producer PERU'S largest industrial crane supplier, Movitecnica, has entered into a trading partnership agreement with Street Crane Company. The deal means both firms are now in an exceptional position to benefit from Peru’s rapidly expanding economy. Andrew Pimblett, managing director of Street Crane Company explained, “Peru is a country of 30 million people, with enormous mineral wealth, that is in the premier league of high growth nations. “Movitecnica is a company that has positioned itself to service the core industries such as mining and the industrial infrastructure supplying cranes and conveyors for minerals. “The total crane market in Peru has grown from $8 million in 2009 to over $25 million in 2012, so the potential is huge. “We will be supplying from the UK our ZX hoists for lifting needs up to 50 tonnes and VX heavy duty hoists for handling loads up to 200 tonnes.” Street Crane’s extensive experience in supplying cranes and hoists for the mining industry and its support infrastructure was crucial to the deal. The company is already successful in Australia, Canada and South Africa where their robust and proven hoist designs give reliable service in the dusty and aggressive atmospheres and extremes of temperature common to mining and mineral processing. “Mines are often hundreds of miles from cities so engineers need to be selfsufficient to keep plant running, this makes hoist design crucial. Street Crane hoists have unique features especially relevant in mining,” Andrew added. “The open design of the Street hoist means

Movitecnica General Manager, Gustavo Delgado and Chairman, Alvaro Benavides welcome Street Crane Sales Director, Chris Lindley-Smith.
that components can be easily accessed for inspection and service. “Components can be removed and replaced without lowering the hoist to the ground for dis-assembly.” Uniquely, in the standard wire rope hoist market, Street hoist brakes act on a hoist gearbox shaft not an extended motor shaft. This design also gives lower operating temperatures in the hoist motor because the heat generated by the hoist brake does not soak into the hoist motor. This provides significantly enhanced safety and maintainability compared to competitor hoists. Other details such as the easily adjustable brake and provision of an inspection cover on the gear box make a vital difference to the time required for servicing, ensuring continuity of production. A heavy duty rope guide allied to a cast phosphor bronze sliding mechanism on the hoists prevents dust build-up, even with difficult materials like cement and magnetic ores. The rope guide clamps the rope in position as it is reeled into the drum, preventing slippage in the event of slack roping and preventing potentially expensive damage to both the rope and barrel.
This feature, originally just available on hoists used in mining and other dusty environments, is now standard on all Street Crane hoists. By eliminating complex black box control electronics and the use of standard switchgear, Street hoists are more reliable and easily repaired on-site by any qualified electrical engineer. Finally, the Street Crane ZX Hoist design incorporates gearing which is fully enclosed in an oil filled gearbox on both hoist and travel motions. Other leading brands have external gears on hoist and travel mechanisms which are not suited to dusty or polluted environments.

GMK6400 cranes are just Grove-y SIX Grove GMK6400s will soon be at work in France. A steady flow of the 400 t capacity all-terrain crane has arrived in the country since August 2012. Mediaco, the largest crane rental company in France, is the latest to add the award-winning GMK6400 to its fleet. The GMK6400 is the strongest six-axle crane in the world and, despite its size, easily meets road permit laws in France. These are key reasons why the crane is proving so popular across the country as Philippe Dumas, sales director Manitowoc EMEA, explained, “If you build it, they will come – if you build
the best possible crane, customers will want it. And that is the GMK6400; this crane can perform lifts that no other six-axle or even seven-axle crane can, and yet is easy to transport on French roads. We are incredibly proud of what this crane can do and, much like our 300 t Grove GMK6300L, I expect it to reach more sales milestones.” All of the GMK6400s in France are owned by crane rental companies. The cranes already in the country are used for construction work, in particular expansion and maintenance work at refineries and manufacturing plants.
GMK6400 cranes are proving extremely popular in France, with Mediaco the latest company to add some of the models to their fleet.

scaffolding
A towering success XSPLATFORMS have Introduced the SafeTower, which they describe as the safest mobile scaffold for all heights. To meet the growing need for safe working at heights, XSPlatforms developed the QuiXSafe, a unique system with a retractable, ergonomic brace that enables the mobile scaffold to be assembled from the inside out while standing on a lower level. The integrated ladder system provides excellent access and optimal freedom of movement between levels. And the closed, flat design of the brace clamps keeps them from falling over and causing damage. And with the QuiXSafe, diagonal braces are a thing of the past. No matter what the desired work height, four horizontal braces are all you need. By integrating stairs into the vertical frame, XSPlatforms say they have made moving between levels safer and faster than ever before. Project Plant February/March 2014

Maximum lift-off for Bobcat's new telescopic handlers Bobcat has launched advanced versions of the company’s two largest rigid frame telescopic handlers.
BOBCAT have introduced their new T40140 14 m and T40180 18 m models - both with increased maximum lifting heights and based on a design that provides class-leading efficiency and productivity backed by state-of-the-art safety systems. The much enhanced T40140 and T40180 telehandlers include many new features and are available in both Stage IIIB and Stage IIIA compatible versions. The Stage IIIB versions are powered by the 75 kW (100 HP) Deutz TCD 3.6 L4 diesel engine which utilises EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) and a DOC-only solution to meet the new emission standards. The new Stage IIIA models are powered by the Perkins 1104D-44TA 75 kW (100 HP) diesel engine. For the T40140 telehandler, the maximum lift capacity is 4.1 tonne and the maximum lift height is 13.71 m. The capacity at maximum lift height is 4 tonne, while at maximum reach (10.43 m), the capacity is 1.3 tonne. Unloaded, the T40140 weighs 10.29 tonne and provides a tilt crowding force of 12300 daN. The T40180 telehandler has a maximum lift capacity of 4 tonne and a maximum lift height of 17.52 m. The lift capacity at maximum lift height is 2.5 tonne, while at maximum reach (13.7 m), the lift capacity is 560
kg. Unloaded, the T40180 weighs 10.79 tonne and provides a crowding force of 12300 daN. The new T40140 and T40180 models deliver market leading load chart performance in their classes, when operating on tyres alone, where the high stability of the telehandlers ensures minimal loss of lift height and capacity. As a result, the T40140 model offers the highest lift capacity of 4.1 tonne, whilst the T40180 telehandler has an unmatched maximum lifting height of 16.2 m when operated on tyres. The hydrostatic transmission in the T40140 and T40180 telehandlers provides a 95% performance efficiency, providing high power coupled with low fuel consumption. The hydrostatic transmission makes it possible to place a load to the exact mm. In addition to precision, this is an important factor contributing to safety, particularly when loads have to be positioned at significant heights or distances from the machine. The unique, patented Bobcat side shift system is a standard feature on the T40140 and T40180 models, ensuring there is no need to reposition the machine if it is not aligned with an opening, providing maximum flexibility with a +/- 700 mm side shift. This is combined with the unique integrated frame levelling system which works independently
of the main frame to provide a tilt correction on inclined surfaces of +/- 4o on tyres and up to +/- 12o on stabilisers for safe, optimum positioning of loads. Featuring optimised ROPS/FOPS protection, the new cab on the T40140 and T40180 telehandlers offers increased safety and visibility through a curved front window providing a better view of loads and attachments at height; a larger back window increasing sight to the rear and a cab door with windows above and below the handlebar for optimum visibility when manoeuvring close to walls or other obstacles. Overall the new cab is designed to provide an exceptional work environment and a new higher level of comfort for the operator, reducing fatigue and improving safety and performance on site. From their comfortable mechanical or air suspension seat, the operator is provided with an ergonomic array of machine controls all within easy reach and including a new forward/reverse (FNR) control button on the joystick; a new digital display; an adjustable steering wheel and an integrated airflow solution. The FNR control on the joystick, first seen on the new Bobcat TL470 and TL470HF 7 m telehandlers, ensures the operator has maximum control at their fingertips.

Compressors on track to meet tough rail challenge very often covered in splashes of shotcrete. Both men and equipment have to endure extremely tough conditions, including high temperatures caused by the confined space in which the work is done. On top of this, dry air is absolutely essential for the effective spraying of quick-setting shotcrete. Thanks to the Doosan compressors, around 98% of the humidity is removed from the compressed air prior to its use by the Colas Rail RTS team for shotcreting. Thierry Delaporte, Technical Director of Colas Rail RTS, said, "Our teams have to work in challenging conditions during operations inside tunnels, and very often have to work at night to avoid disrupting rail traffic. Our equipment has a tough time too, so we need rugged machines. "We’ve been using Doosan compressors for a number of years now and really appre-
ciate their performance, reliability and easy maintenance.” In September and October 2013, teams from the Colas Rail RTS division near Chambéry carried out what was, for them, a fairly typical job and one in which they have a great deal of experience. Work was needed on the Madeleine tunnel in the Maurienne region. As with many railway tunnels originally constructed in brick towards the end of the 19th century, dimensions no longer satisfied the latest railway traffic standards. Renovation and track repositioning work therefore involved ‘widening the walls’. The extent of the widening work was not a major issue, since only a short section of the 359-metre-long tunnel was involved, where

COLAS Rail is using Doosan Portable Power’s new generation of compressors to apply shotcrete to the interiors of French train tunnels. Colas is the first French company to purchase the compressors. The first two new generation Doosan 12/250 portable compressors have been delivered to the technical team at the Les Marches offices of Colas Rail RTS, based near Chambéry. The 12/250 Stage IIIB compliant compressor provides a free air delivery of 25 m3/min at a working pressure of 12 bar. The Colas Rail RTS team uses the Doosan compressors mainly for spraying quick setting, dry-mix shotcrete in tunnel interiors as part of renovation or refurbishment projects. The compressors are installed on railway wagons and have to function inside tunnels for hours on end – until the job is finished and, at the end of a job, the compressors are

the track was at an incline on a bend. What made the project difficult were the operating conditions. Work had to be completed without halting traffic; the atmosphere was hot, dusty and humid; severe restrictions were imposed on working positions, and strict safety precautions were in place. Luckily, the site management was extremely experienced as were the teams provided by Colas Rail. Each team specialised in a particular job: marking out, cutting, demolition, propping, concrete mixing and spraying, finishing and cleaning up. As much as possible, the work was mechanised using special equipment mounted on wagons to form a ‘work train’. The shotcrete spraying was the most delicate phase in the operation as the lifetime of the work depended largely on its effectiveness. Colas Rail employs specialist workers to ensure success: a spraying team made up of one machine operator and one or two sprayers. This is where the company’s expertise really comes into play, because dry-mix shotcrete spraying in tunnels requires experienced operators and equipment capable of withstanding the harsh conditions. Humidity, dust and heat are the order of the day. To tackle this job, Colas Rail decided to use one of its new, high power Doosan 12/250 compressors. The unit was set up to deliver a constant
air pressure of between 8 and 12 bar with the lowest possible humidity content – under 5% – in order to guarantee a top quality shotcrete coating. The compressor proved able to function perfectly for long sessions in challenging ambient temperatures, not to mention the dust! On top of its excellent performance, the Doosan 12/250 compressor proved a real winner for its compact size, which allowed it to operate on the tight load bed of a French railway wagon on only a single track. Colas Rail also places great importance on equipment being easy to clean and maintain. The new compressor has fully satisfied the
company’s requirements. Colas Rail is a French construction company specialising in services to the railway sector. It is a subsidiary of the Colas Group (itself part of the Bouygues Group), and employs a workforce of around 3900. The company’s turnover in 2012 came to 656 million euros. The RTS division of Colas Rail, based near Chambéry, employs a staff of 80 and specialises in the maintenance and renovation of railway tunnels. The division owns a fleet of 12 Doosan Portable Power compressors (ex Ingersoll Rand) plus a few older models that have been in use for over 10 years.

Demanding Polish salt mine puts ADT to the test A new Doosan DA30 articulated dump truck (ADT) has been put into operation, hauling salt about a mile underground in the Polkowice-Sieroszowice mine in west Poland owned by KGHM Polska Miedź. Copper, silver and salt are extracted a few hundred metres underground, over an area totalling 176 km². Both mine face machinery and auxiliary equipment must satisfy the highest standards, and the Doosan DA30 ADT is no exception, ranking high among top underground performers. In the Polkowice-Sieroszowice mine, the DA30 truck transports raw materials and is one of six dump trucks of the same make. At the mine face, one of the most powerful mining machines in the world is at work: a Sandvik AM-85P roadheader, only the second of its kind in operation in Europe. Powered by over six thousand volts, it extracts approximately 200-tonne of raw materials during every three-and-a-half-hour shift, and must be inspected and serviced every other day. For a really smooth workflow, after the raw material has been extracted, it must be transported efficiently as well. This is where the Doosan DA30 ADT comes into its own. It weighs over 23 tonne (when fully loaded, its weight exceeds 50 tonne), and like the rest of the mine equipment, was dismantled and taken down the mine via a special mine shaft, and then reassembled. The DA30 machine in the Polkowice-Sieroszowice mine was sold by Wigropol, a local company in Polkowice, operating as a Doosan sub-dealer in mining equipment, a highly specialist market requiring expert knowledge to be successful. Marek Gruchala, Mechanical Engineering Assistant Manager at the Polkowice-Sieroszowice mine, said, “Here, every situation is extreme. The fact the machine operates underground in an environment subject to extremely high temperatures and dust levels, puts it to the test every day. A special guard and barrier housing was designed to protect the lights and windshields when passing through rubber dams. A platform for the roadheader operator’s assistant was installed to supervise and control salt loading. The machine is also equipped with an ANSUL extinguisher system and DOTRA Communications
system. In the case of really steep dips, the interaxle differential lock can be activated on all the wheels.” Marek Gruchala added, "The machine works fifteen hours a day, sometimes travelling three miles each way. We therefore appreciate the low exhaust emissions of the Scania diesel engine which fully complies with Stage IIIB standards. “The level of emissions produced in tunnels can be significant. Recent test results have shown that particulate levels are well below 100 ppm in the vicinity of the exhaust, compared to standard requirement levels of 300 ppm, an impressive result.” Salt is delivered from the roadheader by the DA30 truck to the crater, then to the crusher, and onto a double-deck vibrating screen. The process continues until the grain size is down to less than 5 mm. The salt is then conveyed to fine vibrating screens. When all the quality requirements have been met, the salt is transported by belt conveyor to a deposit which took just twelve months to build. From here, the salt is transported by road throughout Poland and Central Europe. Last year, 336,000 tonne of salt was extracted. Project Plant February/March 2014

Hammering home the message LOWER vibration and a reduced powerto-weight ratio are the two key performance developments in Hilti's new, next generation 8 kg combihammer. The TE 80-ATC AVR features the company's Active Vibration Reduction system which has cut the tri-axial measurement to 7.5 m/s², meaning an operative can drill 696 holes-per-day (based on a 25 mm diameter to 100 mm depth) before reaching exposure limit value (ELV). A drilling speed of 360 revolutions per minute (rpm), compared to an industry standard of 250-280 rpm, and a 1,700 watt motor achieves an impressive performance-to-weight ratio by creating a single impact energy of 11.5 joules and a hammering speed of 2760 blows per minute. Other improvements include a new, larger slip clutch and a unique air cooling concept that reduces the working temperature of the tool and cuts dust intake, improving both operator productivity and
reducing maintenance and repair downtime. Hilti's Active Torque Control (ATC) triggers an immediate electronic safety cut-out if the drill bit becomes jammed. Worker health and safety is further improved with a Dust Removal Systems (DRS) available for drill bits, chiselling and coring. The product is designed for hammer drilling in concrete, masonry and natural stone up to a 150 mm diameter using TE-Y and TE-YX drill bits. It can also be used to core in concrete and masonry up to 150 mm, and for mid-to-heavy chiseling. Martin Amstalden, Northern Europe Product Manager for Heavy Duty Tools at Hilti, said, "This tool category is hugely popular with the building construction, tool hire, civil engineering and structural steel trades where productivity and safety are key. "We boast a heritage of over 40 years developing combihammers."

telehandlers
On the Hunt for the ideal telehandlers HUNTLEY Plant have identified that their customers in Scotland and the North of England have a demand for a wide variety of telehandlers for specific handling duties. Applications range from steel erecting to industrial and from general construction to infrastructure projects such as oil and gas. The Manitou range of telehandlers has great appeal thanks to a comprehensive selection of machinery with lift heights from six to 30 metre rotational and heavy lift models with load capacities up to 22 tonnes. Stephen Huntley, Director of Huntley Plant, appreciates the quality of Manitou but says his first experience with the firm was with powered access platforms rather than telehandlers. “We purchased ten articulated
boom platforms in 2006 and they have proved to be an excellent investment. It was the catalyst for our company to purchase additional Manitou powered access platforms for our hire fleet and we now have over 40 ATJ’s.” Since the beginning of the year Huntley have purchased in excess of 20 telehandlers and platforms from local Manitou dealer, Lloyd Limited of Throckley, near Newcastle. Stephen (pictured above) heads up the family business which was started by his father Geoff in 1989. The early days saw the hire fleet consisting of power tools, containers and site accommodation as well as Manitou rough terrain forklifts. Geoff quickly rationalised the hire equipment to suit growing customer demands. Today Huntley Plant is recog-

nised as a significant player in specialist lifting, powered access and telehandler hire. The last few years has seen the business grow by 30% per year. Huntley’s may well look to expand their presence in the North of England and further into Scotland but they will never
lose touch with the basics of the business. Despite Geoff Huntley’s many years in plant machinery he still gets excited about a well designed machine which appeals to his engineering background and he highly rates the Manitou compact MT625 and the heavy lift MHT10120L as sure-fire winners!

The “next big thing” in demolition is raring to go
WHEN the Stanley LaBounty Mobile Demolition Processor (MDP) was launched during Bauma 2013 it came with the boast of being the “next big thing” in demolition processing, not only having many design advantages over other traditional processors but the promise of LaBounty shear technology built into a processor. As the proof of the pudding is always in the eating, ECY Haulmark were delighted when long-time customer Technical Demolition Services (TDS), the UK’s first customer of the MDP attachment, invited them to watch the “new kid on the block” at work. Working in Glasgow demolishing high rise tower blocks, the 2200kg MDP20 complete with pulverisor jaws was fitted to their Liebherr 984 high reach.
TDS project director Austin Taperell and site manager Derek Wright both remarked that the performance power of the MDP20 had really impressed them, immediately seeing the advantages over other demolition processors previously used throughout their sites, through increased performance and production they had witnessed a marked reduction in the overall time taken to complete these particular demolition contracts. The Stanley LaBounty MDP is a highpowered single cylinder attachment used to crush and process concrete quickly and easily. Each MDP product incorporates a patented quick change jaw pivot, 360-degree powered rotation, reversed cylinder, SWIFT LOC teeth,
and multiple machine mount capability. With an unmatched power-to-weight ratio, smaller attachments and excavators can be used, providing a significant savings opportunity. ECY Haulmark have now announced that the new Stanley LaBounty MDP20R Mobile Demolition Processors are now available exstock for immediate delivery. The MDP20R are suitable for 18-25 ton machines and come complete with a choice of concrete cracker or concrete pulverisor jaws. The MDP design is based on the timetested and proven LaBounty shears so is sure to exemplify the benchmark quality and performance that is expected from the world-renowned LaBounty attachments.

Now a new building has been constructed on the old school playing fields as part of Scotland’s school regeneration programme and was completed in the summer in plenty of time for the start of the new school year in September 2013. The demolition of the old buildings being carried out with equipment from JCH Plant Hire will pave the way for the creation of new playing fields for the pupils. wheel loader for use on demolition projects throughout Scotland. The other Doosan excavators in the fleet include a 25 tonne DX255LC excavator and two 35 tonne DX340LC models, one a long arm version and the other a standard arm excavator. The equipment in the JCH Plant Hire fleet is available for rental by demolition contractors working across Scotland. Company Owner James Currie said, “We formed the business over 18 years ago and over that time we have built up substantial expertise and experience in supplying a full range of hire equipment for demolition contractors. “I have been purchasing Doosan excavators for more than 10 years and have found them to be very robust for the demanding work on demolition sites, as
well as offering lower running costs.” Like all other excavators in the Doosan range, the new DX300LC-3 model is a dependable, high performance machine. It is powered by the Doosan DL08K ‘common rail’ 6-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine meeting Stage IIIB emission regulations through the use of EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) and Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) after-treatment technologies. At 159 kW, the Doosan DL08K engine in the DX300LC-3 excavator delivers 2% more power at a lower speed of 1800 rpm than the existing DX300LC Stage IIIA model. Factory tests show a 5 to 10% reduction in fuel consumption, depending on the operating mode selected and the work being done. A new ECO Gauge on the control panel helps the operator to
lower fuel consumption by providing real time monitoring of fuel rate and actual engine-percent load. Workload/hour outputs have increased by an average of 6% across the different power modes in the DX300LC-3. A new travel device has increased the maximum travel speed to 5.3 km/h, while the drawbar pull is increased by 4% to 29,800 kg and lifting capacities have been increased by 6%. New hydraulic pumps and valves increase hydraulic flow by up to 11% and pressure (350370 bar) to boost front, travel and power functions as well as increase lifting capabilities and reduce cycle times. Overall, the new hydraulic system improves the productivity of the machine through highly responsive controls. The new ROPS and OPG certified cab offers more space (+6%)
for the operator and several convenient features, including direct control through the joysticks, which have new proportional thumb wheel switches and integrated buttons to provide precise, proportional control of attachments. A new high-quality, heated air suspension seat reduces operator fatigue, while a new cab suspension system helps to cut vibration by 20% and reduce the sound level in the cab to 71 dBA. To support both Doosan and Bobcat products, Scotia Plant offers a large selection of genuine accessories and parts. The company carries most essential spare parts and provides a back-up service with rapid delivery for other items. Customers benefit from the company’s on-site service network, covering everything from emergency repairs to routine maintenance.

Recycling in the Scottish outdoors aids environment MCGOWAN Outdoor Access can now achieve 100% recycling of materials in the Scottish countryside thanks to a MB Dig A Crusher Crushing Bucket, supplied by Worsley Plant. Since 2009, McGowan has been providing low impact, environmentally sensitive methods of construction to create roads, pathways and bridges in rural Scotland. With the increasing number of outdoor access activities being actively encouraged by the government, coupled with more emphasis being placed on preserving and protecting the natural environment, their aim is to facilitate access for all types of user groups. These groups range from a family taking a country walk in the park to cyclists, runners or horse riders, as well as facilitating sporting events for Scotland’s estates and landowners. Their clients include private estates, National Parks, such as Loch Lomond, and government bodies such as the Forestry Commission. In some locations throughout Scotland there is a large amount
of Peat Hags with little mineral material. Added to this, accessibility to the site is often difficult which makes the potential to bring in material a lot harder. Utilizing the isolated sources of rock outcrops near some of these sites seemed a good solution to the problem but McGowan needed to find the best way to break these down and make them suitable for use. Ross McGowan, the MD of McGowan Outdoor Access went directly to Worsley Plant and spoke to Sean Heron, their Managing Director. Sean recommended the MB Dig A Crusher BF90.1. Working with this crushing bucket, they were able to crush down the rock to 60mm and then transport it where it was needed in dumpers. The material from these rock outcrops produced a good quality product to use on the job with the added benefit of allowing recycling of naturally available materials. With the roads located high up in the mountains, the location of a larger crushing plant was unfeasible. Using the crushing bucket on a
Hitachi Zaxis 210 McGowan have been able to produce 30 tons of material per hour. For just £3 a ton they are then producing a product that once transported onto the job they are then crushing down from 60mm down to dust. Ross has been extremely happy with the product and the service level offered by Worsley Plant and is now considering a MB Dig A Crusher BF60, a smaller crushing bucket, to work on smaller scale jobs such as mountain paths. He said, “Using the crushing bucket has saved us considerable time, as well as transportation and material costs. The nature of our work and the difficult access to many jobs means that recycling materials not only makes the job more
cost effective, but also helps us to achieve our aim to provide environmentally friendly methods of building roads, pathways and bridges in rural areas thus protecting the natural environment and reducing our carbon footprint.”
Construction firms boost take-back scheme COLLECTIONS of waste vinyl flooring from construction projects through the Recofloor take back scheme are rising as more firms recognise the economic and environmental benefits of recycling. Founded by manufacturers Altro and Polyflor to divert uplifted material and installation offcuts from landfill for use in new products, the scheme is having a significant impact on sustainability within the building industry. Vinyl flooring from hospitals, schools and major housing and retail projects can be recycled through Recofloor, helping construction companies to achieve their Zero Waste
targets. The scheme also helps with waste management plans on site and saves on disposal costs. Recofloor's Project Manager Jane Gardner said, "This is an expanding sector with collections from construction sites comprising more than half our annual tonnages. Now that the national collection and recycling infrastructure is in place to handle waste vinyl flooring from all types of construction projects, large or small, building companies have everything to gain by using a sustainable and cost-saving alternative to landfill." A suite of case studies on the Recofloor website demonstrate how the scheme works
at various building and refurbishment projects, including examples from national new build, regeneration and property services company Keepmoat, Wates Retail and North Staffordshire Hospital. Working with Keepmoat's Regeneration division in the South East, Recofloor collects vinyl flooring from a wide geographical area. Project managers use the scheme on a number of refurbishment sites, including a major multi-million pound homes refurbishment scheme managed by Genesis Housing Association in East Finchley, London. Recofloor participants are awarded Certificates of Commitment.

Training and exam facility gets pass marks
DEMAND for TT-UK’s Accredited Training & Assessment Facility has almost doubled in 12 months. For more than the 30 years TT-UK has been in business providing trenchless technology products, they have always offered customers training on their range of goods. Up until a few years ago, most of the training was done on-site at the customer’s HQ. Then TT-UK decided to invest in a more in-house approach with a custom built training and indoor all-weather facility at their Bedford premises. Attendance numbers has seen an increase year on year going from over 880 candidates in both 2011 and 2012 to 1,543 to the end of 2013. TT-UK offer EUSR-accredited courses on Grundomat, Grundoburst, Grundowinch and the TT-UK/RSP Suction Excavators, with TT-UK manufacturer’s accredited training available on all their other products. These courses are available six days a week and can accommodate between six and eight candidates. All the courses cover the products in detail, as well as safety, maintenance, service and after care, while also providing the opportunity for candidates to operate the equipment on site in a working environment. The training day normally consists of a presentation, followed by lunch. The practical on-site part of the training takes place in the afternoon. This is then followed by a test and examination on the course content. TT-UK is very proud of the excellent pass rate of 98%. They put this success down to the fact that they have five expert trainers and a fully qualified assessor. After passing the exam and achieving TT-
TT-UK's training involves on-site practical experience of the products.
UK’s exacting standards, upon completion of the course each candidate receives a certificate and EUS Registration card. In order to maintain compliance they are required to take a refresher course every three years. Steve Robson, assessor for TT-UK said, “We keep the numbers on these courses to a maximum of six-eight, that way we can monitor the progress of the individual
candidates throughout the day and if someone is struggling, we can spend more time explaining the products and their applications in more depth until each candidate fully understands. “At the end of the training the client’s investment results in fully trained and competent operatives who are fully aware of the products they have covered.”

news Bobcat excavators help rental business hit new heights NEW Bobcat excavators purchased by Kursaal Plant Hire have helped elevate the business to a new level. The excellent performance of the seven new Bobcat E10 and E16 mini-excavators has been complemented by the outstanding customer service offered by local Authorised Bobcat Dealer, Bobcat of London. Russell Harper, Director of Kursaal Plant Hire said, “In deciding to move from one brand of machine to another, there are many factors to consider but the back-up provided by the local dealer is one of the most important. The ability of Bobcat of London to ensure there is an engineer on site within hours instead of
days is of extreme importance to us and our customers, ensuring minimal downtime and much lower costs. “The costs for service and maintenance of machines have a major impact on our profitability as a plant hire business. On the previous brand of machines, there were a lot of plastic covers each costing £500-600 to replace if they were damaged on site. In contrast, the covers and doors on the Bobcat excavators are all made from heavy gauge steel and are much less prone to damage on site and retain their looks and integrity even in the most rigorous conditions. The price of Bobcat spares is also very reasonable, further
reducing the costs associated with running a machine over its lifetime.” Based in Southend, Kursaal Plant Hire was established around 30 years ago and was acquired by Russell Harper and fellow Director, Stephen Seaby, in 1999. As well as Bobcat excavators, the company offers a wide range of plant and tools for hire, including access equipment, compaction products, dumpers, generators and welders. The Bobcat E10 model is a zero tail swing micro-excavator with a maximum digging depth of 1.82 m and a machine weight of 1066 kg. The machine has a retractable undercarriage that takes the width down to only 710 mm, allowing easy access through a standard pedestrian doorway for work inside buildings or entry into gardens through narrow gates. In addition, passage through low headroom openings is aided by the integrated foldable TOPS. Once the excavator is positioned and ready for work, the undercarriage can be expanded to 1100 mm. Also featuring a retractable undercarriage as standard, the E16 equipped with canopy, bucket and long dipperstick has an operating weight of 1555 kg.

Edinburgh-Glasgow contracts awarded ALLIANCING contracts have been awarded to Costain and Morgan Sindall to plan the delivery of the Edinburgh-Glasgow Improvement Programme (EGIP) In a £5 million deal, the companies will work with Network Rail to develop in-depth plans for the electrification of the main Glasgow Queen Street-Edinburgh Waverley line and other major projects that form part of EGIP. Network Rail is on target to deliver the electrification of the line by 2016 and this announcement enables the infrastructure operator to progress towards awarding contracts for the main, circa £250m, civil engineering and electrification works later this summer. The works will comprise electrification of the main Edinburgh-Glasgow route, via Falkirk High, including route clearance works at Winchburgh Tunnel as well as rail infrastructure works at Glasgow Queen Street and Edinburgh Waverley Stations and extensions to intermediate platforms at Croy, Falkirk High, Polmont and Linlithgow. David Dickson, Network Rail’s acting route
managing director for Scotland, said, “EGIP is a unique opportunity to modernise the main Edinburgh-Glasgow line and transform services for passengers. “The alliancing approach we have announced will allow us to work more closely with contractors and stakeholders to plan the project in the most efficient, cost-effective way for passengers and tax-payers alike.” Transport Minister Keith Brown added, “This announcement represents another hugely important milestone in the delivery of EGIP and shows that we are pressing ahead with the improvements which will give Scotland a railway fit for the future. “I was delighted only last month to open the new £25m station building at Haymarket which was completed on time and on budget. “We are charging ahead with the electrification of the Cumbernauld line and I look forward to the introduction of electric services on this important route in time for the Commonwealth Games.” A Scottish Government-funded scheme,
EGIP is delivering a rolling programme of electrification across the Central Belt – reducing journey times and boosting capacity on routes including the main Edinburgh-Glasgow Queen St line. The programme has already delivered a new station at Haymarket and completed work at 42 bridges on EGIP routes to create the correct clearances for electrification while work to electrify the Glasgow-Cumbernauld line and provide a new station for the town will be completed.

Boel-ed over by new machines EXPANDING plant hire company Boels Rental is investing in a fleet of JCB machines worth more than £11 million in their third major order in three years. Boels Rental is buying more than 300 machines, with delivery set to be completed by the end of March. The deal means that Boels now runs a fleet of more than 1,000 JCB machines. JCB CEO Graeme Macdonald said, “We are delighted to have secured such a significant order from one of Europe’s most important rental companies. This is the third year in succession that JCB has won this major business from Boels which speaks volumes for the superior quality,
performance and efficiency of JCB’s machines.” The multi-million pound deal has been placed by the Netherlands-based company for a range of micro and mini excavators, telescopic handlers and rough terrain forklift trucks. The Loadall telescopic handlers and JCB rough terrain forklifts are all powered by JCB’s Ecomax engine, which offers fuel savings of up to 7%. Pierre Boels, CEO of Boels, said, “Performance and efficiency were key factors in our decision to purchase the JCB machines. In particular, the fuel savings offered by the Ecomax-powered products are particularly important, as being environmentally responsible
is essential to our business.” All the machines are also being supplied with JCB’s LiveLink telematics system which monitors service requirements and protects them from theft. The Boels business, based in the Maastricht region, started in 1977 when Pierre Boels Senior began a small tool rental enterprise from

Compact excavators have become a firm favourite
The new machines were modified by AH Plant's engineer team.
AH Plant Hire has added more Volvo compact excavators to its fleet. Managing Director Andrew Heaton has continued to develop and expand his hire business by adding a further nine of the excavators, bringing the total of Volvo machines to 30. In all, the recent package includes four EC17C’s
(1.7 tonnes), two EC27C’s (2.7 Tonnes), two ECR58D’s and an ECR88. Andrew is certainly a fan of the larger machines. He revealed, “We were one of the first in the north-west to find a niche in the hire market for the Volvo EC55 five-and-a-half-tonne model and the reduced swing variant has
become a firm favourite with our customers since it was first introduced. “The machines have proved reliable and have stood the test of time so together with a competitive package on offer from Seddons we decided to increment our fleet with more of the Volvo brand.” All nine machines have undergone local modifications by AH Plant’s engineers with the addition of hydraulic quick hitches and vandal guards before joining the hire fleet. “Besides the machine reliability, one of the key reasons why we continue to invest in Volvo utility equipment is the first class after sales support we receive from Seddons and indeed from Volvo themselves,” Andrew added. AH Plant Hire is situated just off
the A55 North Wales express way close to Queensferry. The business is supported by two plant delivery vehicles, a complement of four engineers and an administrator. Seddons (Plant & Engineers) Ltd is Volvo Construction Equipment’s appointed dealer for the range of Volvo utility equipment covering the north west of England. Volvo Construction Equipment Division markets wheeled loaders, articulated haulers, hydraulic excavators, graders, Volvo utility and road machinery products in the U.K. There are eight strategically placed customer support centres and a network of utility dealers to ensure high quality customer support is maintained throughout Great Britain.
Raymond Brown orders coming thick and fast THE Raymond Brown Group has yet again turned to Bell Equipment after purchasing further Bell articulated dump trucks and wheeled loaders to add to the company’s already substantial fleet. The recent purchases comprise two Bell B40D 40-tonne ADTs and two Bell L2016 loaders. The latter brings the total of Bell L2106E loaders purchased by the Hampshire-based firm to 10 since the beginning of 2012. Both of the Bell B40Ds have been put to task within Raymond Brown Aggregates, Binnegar Quarry Wareham, Dorset, where dry screened and specialist washed sands are processed in preparation for a range of construction applications. The latest loading shovels are working in very different applica-
tions, at an aggregate wash plant and recycling centre near Portsmouth and at the companies Marchwood wharf near Southampton. Here the operational demands of handling wood and glass are rigorous, with plant often working long hours to meet the demands of shipping. Nick Moth, Group Plant manager at Raymond Brown explained, “Experience has shown us firsthand just what Bell’s equipment is capable of, so when the time came for us to update our existing plant, we once again turned to the company we’ve come to know and trust.” The recent acquisitions have served to further the already sound relationship between Bell, and the Raymond Brown Group in this, the company’s 60th year of trading.
The Raymond Brown Group are delighted with the Bell machines.
Nick Learoyd, managing director of Bell Equipment UK, said, “The number of machines purchased by Raymond Brown in recent months comes as terrific news to the Bell Equipment team, both in terms of product confidence and economic boost. We’re
pleased to report that operators and site managers have been equally impressed with the new equipment’s capabilities, which only further reinforces our own belief that we’re creating some of the very best loaders and ADTs the market has to offer.”

Cut down on energy costs
ENERGY efficiency is a growing consideration for plant owners and managers these days. ABBE, The Awarding Body for the Built Environment, has urged those responsible for the energy performance of commercial buildings to seek out the right information. Energy use in non-domestic buildings accounts for around 18% of the UK’s total carbon emissions. Many energy efficiency measures provide a net financial benefit to businesses, yet the energy use of commercial premises has stayed roughly constant over the last two decades. Having access to the right information can be an obstacle – busy building managers may not always know where to get advice. A great place to start is the Recommendation Report that accompanies your business’s Energy Performance Certificate. Copies of EPCs and the accompanying recommendations can be accessed online via the Non-Domestic Energy Performance Register. All nondomestic buildings require an EPC prepared by a suitably qualified individual at least every ten years, or when the property is let or sold.
Clock is ticking on firms eligible for AIA tax relief A new survey shows British plant firms are in danger of missing out on tax relief worth hundreds of thousands of pounds due to a lack of knowledge. CONSTRUCTION sector companies are missing out on £250,000 worth of tax relief because they are unaware of how much they are entitled to claim against newlypurchased machines, a new survey carried out by JCB has revealed. Out of a total of 250 businesses surveyed, only five (two percent) correctly answered that they could claim back up to a quarter of a million pounds through the Government’s Annual Investment Allowance (AIA) scheme. Businesses investing in plant, machinery or commercial vehicles have been entitled to claim AIA since legislation was introduced in 2008. But in the Chancellor’s Autumn Statement of 2012, the AIA was raised from £25,000 to £250,000 – but only for a temporary period of two years staring from January 1, 2013. Paul Jennings, Managing Director at JCB
Finance, said, “Companies of all sizes are eligible for the AIA but many are simply missing out. “For companies whose financial year ends in December the deadline to claim the first tranche of AIA has already disappeared. “Unfortunately any unspent allowances can’t be carried forward so for some £250,000 in tax relief may already have been lost.” Paul added, “The countdown has also begun for those companies with a 31st March 2014 year end, or unincorporated businesses with a tax year ending 5th April 2014. “That’s because after these dates the available AIA drops to £187,500 before finally reverting to £25,000 on 1st January 2015. “Other companies with different financial
Sandvik credit SANDVIK has completed an amendment of its guaranteed credit facility established in February 2012 and maturing in 2018. The facility, which is divided into two currencies comprising 650 million EUR and 5 billion SEK, has been placed at the disposal of the company. “I am pleased we have been able to amend the facility to better reflect current market standards and reduced borrowing margins. It secures liquidity for the years ahead while also reconfirming the banks included in our core relationship bank group,” said Group Treasurer Anders Örbom. Project Plant February/March 2014

year ends will have differing amounts remaining but all need to review their spending plans before it is too late.” “Unfortunately our survey shows that there seems to be confusion in the construction and plant hire sector over the size and eligibility of the available tax relief. “It seems that some financial advisors
have been slow in coming to terms with the new rules and some tax saving opportunities have already been lost. “Additionally, there seems to be confusion in the plant hire sector with many businesses being wrongly advised that they are not eligible for the AIA.” JCB’s survey demonstrated that although
more than half (53 per cent) of people answered “yes” when asked if they had heard of the Annual Investment Allowance, only two per cent could give the correct monetary value of the allowance. Around a third incorrectly answered that it currently stands at £25,000 while 47 per cent gave £50,000 as their answer.

excavators
Fuel efficient Volvo just the ticket for SRC Aggregates SRC Aggregates has selected a new Volvo EC220D crawler excavator to take over primary extraction and bulk muck shifting duties at its Crown Quarry facility on the outskirts of Colchester. The EC220D takes over from a Volvo EC210LC that was originally supplied back in 2007 for the Colchester site which has since taken up residence at the company’s other sand and gravel extraction quarry near Dunmow. “The performance and reliability of the EC210 cannot be faulted and this was the primary consideration when we looked to add another excavator to our fleet,” said director David Hunter. Performance and reliability aside, SRC Aggregates looks forward to significant fuel savings with the EC220D and together with a weight and specification advantage will find
even more improvements in overall performance. The EC220D benefits from the use of Volvo’s Stage IIIB D6 engine, delivering 175hp (129kW) of power and 849Nm of torque, coupled to an improved hydraulic system with larger pumps which in turn significantly improves hourly fuel consumption with shorter cycle times. Operators can select the best work mode for the task at hand, ensuring optimum performance and fuel efficiency. Modes include: I-idle, F-fine, G-general, Hheavy or P-power, with the machine automatically setting the appropriate engine speed for the work mode and ECO mode is a new feature that works in G to H (or P) mode. Pump flow is controlled for combined digging and swinging operations to reduce the flow loss through the overload relief valves,
while maintaining digging power and maximum swing torque. Eco mode provides better fuel efficiency without loss of performance in most operating conditions. The new ‘smart’ hydraulics system is designed for high productivity, high digging capacity, easy manoeuvrability and class leading fuel economy. It features improvements that increase total flow and cycle times. Independent and simultaneous movements of the digging equipment are controlled by an ‘automatic sensing work mode’. It can also prioritize flow according to the work being done – e.g. to the boom for faster raising when loading or in deep excavations; to the arm during levelling or swing during large slewing angles. Besides general extraction of sand and ballast, the new EC220D is also being utilised to

construct a large reservoir on the 160 acre Crown Quarry site commissioned by the Ardleigh Reservoir Committee. The new excavator joins a mixed fleet of equipment including articulated haulers, loading shovels and excavators. SRC is a well-known Essex firm specialising in the construction of agricultural reservoirs and supplying aggregates to the major aggregate companies and construction industry. As a family run business with many ties in the Essex area, SRC prides itself on providing a reliable service and quality materials to all its customers. Crown Quarry at Ardleigh (north of Colchester) produces high quality sand, gravel and other aggregates for the Essex area. A Shakespearean success
A project to transform a wildlife habitat and save a colony of great crested newts has been completed at one of the houses looked after by the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust, thanks to the support of Kubota Construction, Exac-One and Steelwrist UK. The three companies joined forces to help the charity, which cares for the world’s greatest Shakespeare heritage sites in
Stratford, restore the habitat and deepen the pond at Mary Arden’s Farm – a real life working Tudor farm and the home of Shakespeare’s mother. As part of the project, Kubota Construction loaned the charity one of its high performance mini-excavators, whilst digger attachment specialist Exac-One provided one of Steelwrist UK’s tilt rotators to ensure the bucket
could be manipulated into various positions without disturbing onsite ground conditions. Joe Moore, Farm Manager at Mary Arden’s Farm, said, “This was an important conservation project which helped to create a better wildlife habitat at the farm. “We are dedicated to protecting our wildlife species and the farm has a variety of wildlife on its site. It is important for us to be in keeping with this area as Shakespeare and his mother would have known it. “As a charity we are delighted with the support we received from Kubota and Exac-One, as well as Pat Bulcock from Steelwrist UK for operating the machinery and carrying out the work for us. “One of the key challenges was dredging the pond and removing the silt without damaging the pond itself and the ground conditions around it. The tilt rotator in particular was critical for this as there were lots of trees and awk-
ward spaces that had to be navigated. By using this attachment on the powerful Kubota machine Pat was able to get the bucket into a wide range of positions irrespective of the obstacles he was up against.” The Kubota 5.5 tonne KX057-4 used for the project is one of the most advanced mini-excavators on the market. Designed with excellent stability to work with a variety of attachments, the unit features two auxiliary circuits as standard to increase versatility. At Mary Arden’s Farm, this meant that Steelwrist’s tilt rotator from Exac-One’s could be fitted easily and without modification. Other key features of the KX0574 are a luxurious cabin to maximise operator comfort, precise oil flow control and enhanced boom lifting and digging force. As standard with Kubota, the mini-excavator is protected by Kubota’s industry leading antitheft technology.
Unbeatable back-up MARTELLO Plant Hire has made Bobcat the brand of choice for the company’s mini-excavator hire fleet. Eight new Bobcat mini-excavators including E10, E16, E26 and E50 models have now been added to the company's hire fleet. Phil Howell, Plant Director at Martello Plant Hire, said, “The move we have made to Bobcat has been due to a number of reasons, but the biggest factor is the incredible back-up from Bobcat of London, which is second to none. “When this is combined with the good feedback to the new Bobcat machines from our longstanding customers, the long warranty on Bobcat mini-excavators and the interest-free credit
terms, it’s a very attractive package.” Established in 1965, Martello Plant Hire is based at the Potts Marsh Industrial Estate in Westham close to Pevensey near Eastbourne. Employing a total of 12 staff, Martello Plant Hire offers all types of equipment for building, civil engineering, refurbishment, DIY and gardening, from small hand tools to excavators up to 9 tonne. The company also has a full range of secure storage and accommodation units available for long or short term hire, including site storage, canteen, mess room and office units with sizes from 10 x 8 to 24 x 9 ft. Furniture is also available and
An E26. Martello have bought eight Bobcat mini-excavators.
Martello Plant Hire offers a delivery and collection service for all of these versatile units. Phil Howell added, “The hire market has been reasonably strong in our area as testified by the number of companies in the market – for example, we have two competitors located just 100 and 110 yards away from us. “Several new housing developments are about to begin in Eastbourne and Hailsham so hopefully this will keep us busy. The
private owner market has also picked up especially for refurbishment and extension work.” Bobcat of London is the Authorised Bobcat Dealer for London, Essex, Kent, East Sussex, West Sussex, Surrey, Hertfordshire and Middlesex. The company is responsible for sales and service for Bobcat excavator; skid-steer, compact tracked and all wheel steer loaders; telehandlers and utility vehicles for this area.

excavators
Doosan looks for fair share DOOSAN Construction Equipment is aiming for an increased share of the 14 to 16 tonne crawler excavator market with the launch of the company’s new Stage IIIB compliant DX140LC-3 and DX160LC-3 models. The crawler excavators are powered by the Doosan DL06K ‘common rail’ 6-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine meeting Stage IIIB engine emission regulations through the use of EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) and Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) after-treatment technologies. The engine has a displacement of 5890 cm³ and delivers 15% more power than that in the previous Stage IIIA models. It also delivers 11% more torque (49.5 kgf.m) in the DX160LC-3 model. Factory tests show a reduction of up to 17.5% in fuel consumption, depending on operating mode selected and the work being undertaken. Contributing to the overall reduction in fuel consumption is the improved cooling efficiency and the installation of a new fan clutch with electrically controlled
fan speed. The latter is dictated by the coolant, hydraulic oil and cooled charged air temperatures and target engine speeds while the electrically controlled fan speed results in much lower fan noise and better fuel efficiency. To increase performance in rough terrain, the drawbar pull
has been increased by 5% in the DX140LC-3 model and by 34% in the DX160LC-3 excavator, while swing speed and torque have been increased by up to 12% on both models. The new crawler excavators are ideal for all types of trenching, digging, breaking, levelling,
materials handling, general drainage, landscaping and road maintenance applications. The ROPS and OPG certified cab offers more space for the operator and several convenient features such as direct control through the joysticks, which have new proportional thumb wheel switches.
Feel the force with DX190W-3 DOOSAN have also launched the 19-tonne DX190W-3 wheeled excavator. Like all of Doosan’s new generation excavators, wheel loaders and articulated dump trucks launched in the last two years, the DX190W-3 model goes beyond just meeting the latest emissions regulations, creating a new industry benchmark by offering increased digging power, lifting capacities and faster working cycles with improved fuel efficiency to reduce costs and preserve the environment. With operating weights varying from 18.4 to 20.3 tonne, the DX190W-3 is a true 18-19 tonne class machine. Powered by the well-proven Stage IIIB compliant Doosan DL06KB 6-cylinder ‘common rail’ diesel engine, fitted with a waste gate turbocharger with intercooler as standard and developing 129.4 kW (174 HP) at 1900 RPM (SAE J1349), the DX190W-3 model offers more power than other machines in this class. This is combined with a huge hydraulic capacity to produce the highest arm and bucket forces together with the highest traction force on the market. Project Plant February/March 2014

Demolishing challenges for five decades
1964. Within a few years of the company’s inception, John’s son, Michael joined the startup, assisting his father in demolishing buildings and selling reclaimed materials. In 1981 Michael purchased the business from his father and started expanding. He explained, “When I bought the business it consisted of just two machines and one lorry. “I set about expanding it, bringing new people in to work for me and building up a fleet of machinery. “I focused on making sure the company always delivered on its promises by keeping our word and completing jobs to the highest of standards. “To this day, with over 40 machines and employing 90 staff this ethos still remains an
integral part of our success.” 777 Group’s reputation for being able to deliver on large, often complex projects has led to it fulfilling some unusual and challenging contracts over the years. These have included the demolition of Gun Wharf
Quays in Portsmouth during the mid 1990s, a project that encompassed demolishing the original naval base and excavating 10 metres below ground level. Portsmouth’s

777 Group, one of the UK’s largest and most successful demolition companies will be celebrating its 50-year anniversary throughout the course of 2014. From humble beginnings in the early 1960s, the company has become one of the industry’s most well-known and respected names. Although demolition and dismantling still remain at the core of the 777 Group’s business, diversification into waste management and asbestos removal have added to its ever-growing turnover, which is expected to exceed in £20m during 2014. The company was originally founded by the late John Pearce who, having previously driven lorries in the Army and also worked for several demolition companies started 777 Group in

equipment is only one half of the success story, with not only those behind the controls but also involved in every other aspect of the business including safety, finance, training and human resources all essential to the Group’s success. “Part of our ability to ensure contracts are fulfilled to the highest standards is based on giving our staff the best training available and ensuring their skill and experience is used to the full. Failure to do so would mean upset clients, no repeat business and ultimately a contraction of the business”, Michael added. 777 Group’s ability to invest in its employees and equipment means the company is in an excellent position to enjoy another half century of success in the demolition sector,. Michael said, “The demolition sector has experienced its fair share of ups and downs and that
in turn has taught us to remain flexible and not forge profit simply for the sake of revenue. “With so much competition in the sector, remaining successful is still about keeping your word by doing what you say you are going to do to the best of your abilities.”
