The Horseshoe’s extensive list features classics and high quality wines from many regions at many price points. Two lists (by grape variety or by region) are available. There’s a strong selection of organic and bio-dynamic wines and good ranges of magnums, half-bottles and de-alcoholised wines. Judges were impressed by the business’s commitment to training and staff involvement.
Ubiquitous Chip is a wine champion several times over but never stops developing. In the last year it has worked to bring classics to the masses by installing a stateof-the-art Coravin preservation system to offer fine wines by the glass. Its wine sourcing and innovative wine events are impressive and it continues to be a leader in staff training and development.
Wedgwood is a modestly-sized business that devotes major resources to wine, including sourcing its own exclusively-bottled Rioja Reserva. It has an interesting wine by the glass range, manages margins to include fine wines at attractive prices, and organises innovative wine events. Judges were impressed by Wedgwood’s huge commitment to staff training.

community pub of the Year
The Allison Arms Glasgow
The Bridge Inn Peebles
Platform 3 Linlithgow
The Allison Arms has carved out a place at the heart of its south side community. Adopting the motto ‘all welcome at The Allison Arms’, the team has established the bar as a social hub for locals, attracting a broad clientele. In addition to an extensive programme of entertainment, the bar runs a number of annual day trips for regulars, including to the Scottish Grand National at Ayr Racecourse.
The relationship between the team at the Bridge Inn and the locals is a twoway street. Beyond their loyal custom, locals are involved with the pub in a variety of different ways – from greenfingered customers planting flowers in the beer garden to others helping the pub brew its own real ale with a local brewer. Charity nights are a staple of the Bridge Inn’s calendar, with the pub hosting a range of events to raise money for local charities and organisations.
It may have a small physical footprint, but Platform 3 punches well above its weight when it comes to its role in the community. From the local gala day and civic festival to the reed band and junior football teams, Platform 3 supports a host of local groups and organisations. Whisky and wine tasting events are a regular feature on the pub’s social calendar, alongside fundraising nights for charities nominated by customers.

COCKTAIL BAR of the Year
The Adamson St Andrews
The Finnieston Glasgow
Sygn Bar & Kitchen Edinburgh
Opened in March of this year, the bar at The Adamson has already made its mark on the home of golf. Time invested by management in recruitment and training has clearly paid off with bar staff demonstrating a depth of knowledge in spirits and mixology. Judges were impressed by how well The Adamson’s cocktail menu strikes a balance between crowd pleasers and more challenging cocktails.
Glasgow cocktail stalwart The Finnieston serves up creative cocktails in a welcoming environment with a strong dining offer to boot. The venue’s recently refurbished training and private function room helps to keep staff at the top of their game and, by opting to open up training sessions to the wider trade, The Finnieston can rightly be viewed as an asset to the Scottish cocktail scene as a whole.
From boozy milkshakes to fizzy bottled cocktails, Sygn is a hotbed of innovation. Judges were impressed by the accessibility of the venue’s cocktail menu with its ‘cocktail key’ symbols helping to steer customers towards the perfect tipple for their taste. A structured training programme and the freedom to experiment also ensures that the staff at Sygn stay fully engaged with the cocktails they are serving.

It’s impossible not to be impressed by the recent refurbishment at Live Lounge, which boasts a stylish interior. The newly installed ‘infinity dancefloor’ and attractive smoking area were of particular note to the judges. Sub Club consistently brings the top international names in electronic music to Scotland, making it the go-to destination for fans of this genre. A packed calendar and custom-built Bodysonic dancefloor, as well as strategic use of social media, inspire loyalty from the club’s attendees, and the growing numbers of events outside of the club are testament to this.
Why Not’s dedication to the customer experience ensures it remains at the top of its game. Its innovative approach to drinks and their presentation, and additions such as electronic menus in party booths and DJs in its outdoor area complement the main LED room. Iain and Katie make a real difference to the lives of several in their community. They employ youngsters from deprived areas, raise thousands of pounds through events and sponsorships to support local and national charities, host fundraising events to help local schoolchildren, and care for local residents in a variety of ways. Iain and Katie are a prime example of how individuals can make an enormous difference to others.
Lisa is a very humble person who makes a real difference to her community. She has raised money for various charities, including £5000 for the Stuart Hutchison memorial fund, which was set up in memory of her cousin who died tragically in a road accident. Lisa looks out for locals, helping in whatever way she can, from arranging birthday cakes to checking on regulars. Lisa devotes a lot of her spare time to helping others but says “it’s just what I do”.
Susan goes the extra mile for people whenever she can. She supports a number of charities, including the Chernobyl Children Life Line, which has seen her offer temporary care for 12 children over the past six years. Susan does whatever she can to help locals, from offering free haircuts to helping the local newsagents in the depths of winter delivering the newspapers to the whole village. Her next mission is to walk coast to coast across Scotland to raise money for her barmaid’s disabled child.
