LITERACY

High-quality child care teachers don’t just read stories. They invite children to provide the voices and sound effects. The children can recreate stories in dramatic play. These children learn to predict what will happen in a story. They learn to write their own stories. What will your child’s story be? GIVE STORIES

MEANING Bring Books to Life The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle

One day a caterpillar hatches from an egg on a leaf. He is very hungry. He eats and eats until he becomes a big caterpillar. His adventures tell the story of becoming a butterfly.

Act Out the Story Talk about the story before you begin. How do caterpillars move? Stretch out on the floor and pretend to be a caterpillar. As you read, talk about what the little caterpillar eats. What is that? What color is that? Would you eat that?

When the caterpillar eats too much, roll around on the floor and pretend your belly hurts. Roll up in blankets to make your own cocoons. Emerge as beautiful butterflies! Stretch your wings and fly around the room!

High-quality child care looks like

Make a Watercolor Butterfly

Note: food coloring stains everything. Protect clothing and work surfaces.

You’ll need: Paper plates • Food coloring A cup of water • Cotton balls Cotton swabs • Markers • Scissors Tongs • Tape • Paper towels

Continue to drip water until the top (smooth surface) is covered. Shake or tilt the plate to help spread the color. Pour excess water into a trash can. Set the plate aside to dry.

How it’s done: 1. Pass the back of the paper plate under running water.

6. Trim the ridged, outer edge off the dry plate. Draw a circle using an inverted bowl to make a circle for the final trim.

2. Place the plate on newspapers to catch overflow water and color. 3. Drip several drops of yellow food coloring on the smooth part of the plate. Yellow makes a good base. 4. Add a few drops of blue and green or red, but not both. NOTE: Red turns green into brown. 5. Use a cotton ball or piece of clean sponge soaked in water to drip water on the color spots.

Get book suggestions for all ages in Better with Books from our Family Resource Library.

7. Fold in half. 8. Cut triangles at the top, bottom and side like this. Round the edges. 9. For the antennas, color cotton swabs (Q-tips) with markers and tape to the back of the butterfly.

Happy Birthday Peekaboo! As a kid, I hated scary movies. Birthday sleepover invitations that were considered “cool” because they included getting to watch a scary movie were a complete no-go for me. When my much-older brother or sister had friends over and popped popcorn for an all-night fright fest marathon, I was definitely not the younger sibling trying to sneak in for a peek. In fact, I was most likely sleeping in my parents’ room after watching “The Tonight Show” with Johnny Carson instead. Full disclosure: even Scooby Doo movies used to be too much for me right before bed! The nightmares might have been animated, but they were still nightmares -- and terrifying ones at that. Fast-forward to my college years, then newlywed years, and my fear of scary movies was still very much alive and well. If a single commercial teaser for a scary movie came on while watching TV, my night was ruined. I had to lock the bedroom door and prepare myself for a night of nightmares, and sleep-deprived anxiety as I questioned whether any of those nightmares were plausible in the real world. The one time that I was outvoted 3-to-1 to see a scary (and not romantic comedy) film on a double date with Jonathon, his sister, and her husband, did not go well. I sat through it with my eyes closed and my ears plugged, trying to think happy thoughts and survive my brother-inlaw’s best efforts to try to spook me every five minutes. Fast-forward again to life with four kids. The things that scare me today are SO much different than they were pre-kids... and definitely aren’t the kinds of things you’d find in a movie script. “High Anxiety” doesn’t even begin to cover parenting! 8 February 2020

Dangers lurk around every corner post-kids, from finding a milk cup under the seat of the car weeks past expired, to poo smeared on walls, to holding in screams of agony when Legos dig into my feet as I tip-toe out of a room. Words like, “My tummy doesn’t feel so good...” followed by projectile vomit on the carpet are far more terrifying than any exploding brains, gore, or goo. Blood in movies is fake, but boo-boos can produce real blood, real pain, and real fear and heartache. Ghosts and goblins have nothing on my child’s fingers crawling underneath the bathroom door, or my kid creeping into my room in the middle of the night to wake me up staring at me with sleepless eyes. You can fast forward movie exorcisms, but trying to get a fussy toddler to stay in his own bed when he or she is protesting via bloodcurdling screams and thrashing -- now that is an experience that is nightmareinducing. Werewolves stalking an ill-advised camping party in the woods pales in comparison to the worry and fear you have about your kids driving on their own, or riding in the car with another teen driver. And a girl entering teenhood with her hormones all over the place -- I will take a monster’s spinning head over spinning emotions any day. A small blessing, I suppose, is that these scary occurences end up occurring daily, which helps dull the effects of constant, anxiety-inducing fear. We can even be our own worst enemy and create scary scenes when we appease our kiddos by purchasing whatever is the latest and greatest toy, only to have these playthings turn out to be pure evil -- a toy car revving its engine randomly in the middle of the

night, or a toy dog letting out a bark when you don’t expect it, or the red eyes of a Furby seeming to follow you from a shelf. Of course, you would never dare get rid of these offending toys, unless you want to endure the chilling screams immenating from your angry child. Not only does life get a little scarier when you enter parenthood, but it also begins to imitate art. Let’s be real -- as a mommy of four, I could easily be cast in any movie that includes “the walking dead.” After all, I spend most of my daylight hours in a zombie like state, exhausted from getting little to no sleep while I wander aimlessly, just trying to remember what I was supposed to be doing. The main reason scary movies are no longer scary to me is because I know I can just turn them off and move on - leaving their fear inducing cinematics in TV land. Parenthood, however, is forever, and our worries only grow as our children get older, their problems get bigger, and our ability to control and help them slips away. But... even though parenting is full of scary things that Hollywood movie scripts

can’t match, in the end it is all worth it for the incomparable moments of joy that come with being a parent, like birthday celebrations and holiday traditions. Speaking of holidays, this is February, after all, the month of love, and also Peekaboo Magazine’s12th birthday! Twelve years of connecting amazing families across Northwest Arkansas with one another, and promoting the businesses that make it the incredible place we all enjoy and love. We started Peekaboo Magazine when my oldest was just a year old to give parents a voice and an opportunity to share with each other in order to connect and bond. I am so honored to still be doing it now with my 13-year-old, 10-, 7- and 2-year-old! Another special part of this issue is our popular birthday party guide, where families can learn from all that we have gathered over the years and use it to make each birthday this year (and for years to come!) memorable for their little ones. I look forward to sharing many more stories with you in 2020 and spotlighting as many businesses as possible. Thank you for being a part of the Peekaboo family! - Kim Enderle

Welcome to the World,

‘Baby M’ by: Tracie McEachern Nothing seemed out of the ordinary about July 29, 2020, and, indeed, about my pregnancy thus far. I felt pretty lucky—this was my first pregnancy, and I hadn’t experienced any morning sickness as of yet, and had been able to stay fairly active throughout. I consistently exercised, coached basketball, played golf, and went to work more or less as usual. I had been more tired than usual during the first few months of my pregnancy, but that had already passed. I wasn’t even affected by any food or scent sensitivities, like I feared I would be! At any rate, that day I went through my regular routine and chatted with some of my co-workers about how I would continue working until my due date, which wasn’t until August 28th, a month away. After work, I went to Walmart to pick up groceries, got home around 6:30pm and talked with my husband Andrew before he needed to leave for his 10 February 2020

ice hockey game at the Jones Center. As we were in the middle of our conversation, however, I had a crazy feeling run through my body, so we called our doctor and told her what was going on. She responded quickly, saying, “Your water broke and you are in labor!” to which my immediate and overwhelmed reaction was, “I’m not ready! I don’t have anything packed except a few things for ‘Baby M’!” I hung up the phone, called my parents to tell them what was happening, and then rushed—well, more like waddled—around the house trying to pack a bag. I figured I had time. After all, I had always heard that going into labor with your first child takes a while—so why would I need to rush to the hospital? After 10 to 15 minutes of trying to gather everything and anything we thought we might need, we headed to Washington Regional Hospital from our home in Siloam Springs. We had just passed Tontitown when I decided that I needed

to check how far along my contractions were, and they were about 7 to 8 minutes apart. Like any new dad, Andrew was driving pretty fast, half out of nervousness and half out of excitement. It was amazing to see how few cars moved out of our way so we could pass them! That frustration is something you realize only after having an emergency, when you really need to get somewhere, of course! We finally arrived at the hospital, left our car at the entrance (still running!), and rushed into the entrance to check in. Thankfully, nobody stole our car. As we were checking in, I told Andrew to go park the car. (Yes, I was worried about my car getting stolen while I was in labor!) I have never seen him move so quickly—we were on the third floor of the hospital and he managed to go down three stories, move the car, and sprint back up to where I was in a matter of what felt like 5 minutes.

The nurses got me prepped and asked all kinds of questions. They confirmed that my water had indeed broken, and that I was dilated to 2. The on-call doctor and nurses prepared me for a long night, and told us what to expect in light of the fact that ‘Baby M’ was an entire month early. At this point, I was really starting to freak out, because there was a chance that I might not see my son when he was born due to these potential (but not confirmed) complications. I kept asking myself, very confused, “What did I do wrong to cause him to come early?” As I said, I had been having the easiest pregnancy... or so it seemed to me. After all, this was my first pregnancy. At around 8pm on the 29th, the medical staff checked me again and told me that I had dilated to 4, and that I would be moving to a delivery room soon. They asked me how my contractions felt on a scale of 1 to 10, to which I responded, “Not too terrible yet.” Around 9pm, things started moving really fast with the birth—much of it is a

blur to me now. I remember them telling me that they were going to try to give me the epidural, and that I needed to hold still. I kept saying, “I’m trying,” but the contractions weren’t stopping. The nurses were doing what they could to give me the epidural before I needed to start pushing. Unfortunately, since this was my first baby and the team assumed that it wasn’t going to progress very quickly, my doctor wasn’t scheduled to come into the hospital until 6am on the 30th—the next day! She ended up making it to the delivery room just as I first started pushing, completely shocked at how quickly everything had progressed. Of course, I was shocked as well, but not just because of the timing. No matter what, I don’t think you can ever be prepared for labor. The stories I had heard did not prepare me for what happened in the delivery room that night. ‘Baby M’ decided to make an appearance at 10:31pm on July 29, 2019. When our baby finally entered the world, we were so happy to hear his cry! Due to him coming a month early, the medical team members were concerned about his lungs not being fully developed. It turned out, though, that everything the medical staff had warned us about was a non-issue—thank the Lord! The next day, however, was an emotional rollercoaster. The day started out good, but as time went on we noticed that ‘Baby M’ was having a difficult time eating and keeping it down. That evening, after one his feedings, we laid him in the hospital bassinet to sleep and my mom, who was visiting, noticed that his color didn’t look right—his face was turning a greyish-blue color. Andrew picked him up out of the bassinet in a hurry and we all screamed for the nurses to come help. Within an instant, a nurse ran into the room and rushed our baby boy out. We looked around at each other in complete silence, stunned. We didn’t know what had just happened, what was going on, or anything. After a few agonizing minutes of waiting, a nurse returned to our room and informed us that our baby had choked on his own spit-up, but the nurses were able to clear the obstruction and ‘Baby M’ was breathing normally now. In light of this incident, the doctors wanted to move him up to the NICU. It was one of the scariest moments of our lives; he never moved or made a single sound to indicate he was choking. In retrospect, we were so lucky that my mom happened to be watching him sleep in the bassinet at that moment and noticed the change in the color in his face. If she hadn’t been watching him, I don’t know how long it would have taken before someone noticed. 12 February 2020

In the NICU, he was on a feeding tube for about two weeks and spent a total of 16 days in the hospital. Because he was four weeks premature, his appetite was really low and he had trouble keeping milk down, so he needed a feeding tube to gain weight and strength. Sixteen days may not seem like a lot, and I know that it isn’t compared to other situations, but it was definitely emotionally draining for two completely unprepared, brandnew parents. We had been prone to believe that everything would go “normally” in life, without complications. Trust me, seeing your baby hooked up to various monitors and machines, plus a feeding tube, is a very scary situation for first-time parents. We are so thankful for all the nurses and doctors that helped us, as well as the Ronald McDonald House at Washington Regional Hospital. Everyone was so helpful and encouraging. We are also very thankful to the many friends and family that reached out to us during this time, whether it was sending encouraging words or letting us know that they were praying for us. Above all, we give thanks to God for the gift of our healthy, precious baby boy. The poor little guy was referred to as ‘Baby M’ for the first week or so of his life because Andrew and I hadn’t decided on a name yet—after all, we didn’t expect him for another four weeks! We eventually decided on the name ‘Easton,’ and these past five months have absolutely flown by. We just love coming home, spending time with our baby boy, and seeing the smile on his face. We’ve learned that Easton’s smile has the power to make all the frustrations of life completely melt away.

We are

Blessed!

by: Ashton Mefford Like many others who follow Christ, I found myself saying that I love God and that I trust God; yet I was putting myself on the throne, trying to take control. Then God put my faith on trial. God gave me a situation I had zero control over. I had to remove myself and put God back on the throne and show what it means to have faith and fully trust in Him. Like many new and expecting mothers, I had my pregnancy dreams and a birth plan. I couldn’t wait for the maternity photos that I would take and pass down to my child. The big belly and feeling every single movement. I couldn’t wait to make that drive to the hospital, hand-in-hand with my husband. I couldn’t wait for the contractions and knowing that the labor pain would be totally worth it. I couldn’t wait to hear my baby cry for the first time and hear, “It’s a . . .” I could not wait for our skin-to-skin moment. But none of this was my reality. Instead, my reality was an ambulance ride to transfer me to a hospital with a children’s unit. It was bed rest, being pumped full of medication, many IV’s, an emergency c-section at 25 weeks where I was intubated – meaning I didn’t get to hear the cry of my baby and my husband didn’t get to go back with me. I didn’t experience skin-to-skin. Instead, my 1 pound, 1 ounce daughter was immediately intubated and wrapped in plastic. She was put in a box and whisked away to the NICU, which would be her home for several months. The first time I got to see my

daughter was through a phone screen. It was over 24 hours before I would get to meet her. I waited a week to touch my daughter’s hand. I waited three weeks to finally hold her. I left the hospital a week after delivery without my daughter, Octavia, and I was angry and hurt. My husband, Garrett, and I did not want kids until much later in life. We were still in college, had only been married a year, and just moved into our house. We wanted to save money, we wanted to start our careers, and we wanted to spend more time together with just the two of us before starting a family. But God had other plans. And I was angry and hurt that God would bless us with this baby when we were not ready, and then have to endure this NICU ride, in an already stressful season of life. I truly did not understand what God was doing. I could not see what good could come out of this, because we were walking through our own hell. But I had to go through that to realize God never promised that we wouldn’t have to endure storms of this life. God never said “if ” the storms come, He said “when” the storms come. Isaiah 43:2 says, “When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rives, they will not overwhelm you. When you walk through fire, you will not be scorched, nor will the flame burn you.” God only asks that we be still, and that He will fight for us. I kept waiting and waiting for God to bring our sweet daughter home. My faith was on trial for 127 days, and that’s when God brought Octavia home. God put me on the stand and asked me, “Do

you trust me?” and I wanted to say I did, but in my anger I knew I didn’t. But God told me, “Take my hand. You weren’t created to fight this battle alone.” All that He asked of me was to be still and trust that He is who He says He is. God doesn’t waste a season. He is so purposeful in everything that He does. I grew more in those four months that I ever have. God was so sweet to give me glimpses into why I had to go through this (we each have our own story in that NICU battle), and I had to continue to trust in Him, even though I hadn’t seen the full picture yet. Even as we wait, in Him we flourish. He is so carefully planting the seed, watering, and tending to the full bloom that we are capable of becoming. Joy does not come when the waiting season has ended, but when we can turn and lean into Him, His strength becomes our own.

can cling to Him, because we weren’t supposed to battle them on our own. Weapons may be formed against you, but they will not prosper. You were made for a time such as this and you don’t have to worry about what to say, how to say it, or even what to do. God sees you and has gone before you and prepared the way. He is our peace that surpasses all understanding and because of this – regardless of the situation, regardless of what the report says, regardless of what the world says, regardless of it all – we don’t have to be anxious...

It is so easy to get caught up in the world and the worry that it has to offer. It’s scary to not know what the future will hold and what it will look like. It was very easy for me to predict that Octavia wasn’t going to thrive, and that we wouldn’t get to bring our daughter home. Because our mouth speaks from what fills our heart, when I choose to fill my heart with God’s truth and His promises, His promises are fulfilled and the truth is declared. The truth is that God will walk you through battles that you cannot handle, but He does this so you

The Story of

Easton By: Dana Kidd Let’s start off by saying I was not one of the women that loved being pregnant, or that had the “pregnancy g l o w . ” I was one of those that was constantly nauseous and throwing up, woke up every night with crazy painful leg cramps that wouldn’t go away, and had high blood pressure. We were monitoring my blood pressure throughout my pregnancy and when I saw my doctor on Christmas Eve, he said it would be a good idea to induce. So, we were told to come back Christmas night to start the inducement process. Needless to say, we weren’t quite prepared for a Christmas baby! After leaving the hospital, we rushed home to pack the hospital bag and make a few final touches on the nursery. The next day was filled with lots of presents and food, but mainly a whole lot of feeling nervous about how everything would go at the hospital. 20 February 2020

After we arrived at the hospital and got set up in the labor and delivery room, I was given my first dose of the inducement medication. I was told they would give me more medication every four hours and to prepare myself for slow going, because this was my first pregnancy and I wasn’t feeling any labor symptoms. Boy were they wrong! I only needed the one dose of medicine to get things moving—apparently Easton was ready to take things into his own hands! Within the next few hours my water broke, and the nurse told us there was meconium staining. This basically means that Easton had a bowel movement before birth. Sometimes this will only cause minor issues, but in other cases (like with Easton) it can cause a lot of problems. Soon after my water broke, it was time to start pushing. Easton made his appearance at 2:20am on December 26th —just two hours shy of being a Christmas baby! We instantly knew something

was wrong because he wasn’t crying or making any noises. He had inhaled the bowel movement (which is called meconium aspiration) and wasn’t able to breathe. A team from the NICU came rushing in and started to perform CPR immediately. They had to place a tube down his throat to help him breathe since he wasn’t able to do it on his own. We were only able to take a quick peek at him before he was taken to the NICU for further testing. About two hours after Easton was born, we were finally able to go see him. Unfortunately, we weren’t quite prepared to see our little baby hooked up to a bunch of different machines -- but he was still the cutest baby ever! With a little rest and medical care we knew we’d be able to take him home soon. However, this didn’t appear to be the case. Along with the meconium aspiration, Easton had developed pulmonary hypertension—which is high blood pressure in the lungs. Two days after he was born we were told that there wasn’t anything else they could do for him at this NICU and we’d have to take a helicopter to the children’s hospital in Little Rock. Slowly but surely, Easton got better. We were able to celebrate the small milestones of adjusting how

much oxygen he needed, lowering the dosage of medicine, and finally being able to hold our son at a week and half old. It was the absolute best feeling to see even a little improvement, because we knew with each small step forward we were getting closer and closer to bringing Easton home. That time came after 24 days in the NICU. We were finally able to bring our sweet baby boy home! I won’t lie, it was the most heartbreaking experience to see our fragile little baby so sick and not being able to do anything to make him feel better. But looking back, Easton’s birth experience made us have more compassion and appreciation in our lives. No matter how sick Easton was, there was always another baby that was worse off. We just celebrated Easton’s first birthday and it’s crazy to see how much has changed within the last year. It’s bittersweet to look back at pictures from his time spent in the NICU. Looking at him now, you’d never guess how sick he was at birth. This past year has been quite the roller coaster, but we wouldn’t have it any other way.

February has always been such a fun month for me to do crafts with my kids. I’m not sure if it’s because it’s less obvious than, say, Christmas, or if it’s because stores are littered with everything pink and red, which just puts me in the mood to get crafty. It also doesn’t hurt that Target’s dollar bins are notorious for drawing me in like a moth to a flame. Some of my kids’ best projects have been born out of a sheer desire to share their love of glitter with a clean-freak mom like me. What can I say? I’m a sucker for seeing my kids smile. Grab your scissors, glue, tape, and a whole bunch of patience, because it’s about to get crafty up in here. These five kid-tested and mom-approved 22 February 2020

projects will have you on top of your game for the month of February. 1. Stained Glass Heart Ornaments These are an oldy but a goody. You will need a few pieces of red and pink tissue paper, one piece of red or pink construction paper, contact paper, a hole punch, and yarn. Have your child tear up the tissue paper into little pieces that they will lay flat onto the contact paper. Cut a large heart shape out of the piece of construction paper, leaving only the ring of the heart (the inside should be cut out). Lay the heart shape on the contact paper. Put the torn-up pieces of tissue paper all

cut out the shapes, and sprinkle them with pieces of candy before popping them in the oven. I love trying new recipes with my daughters and then delivering the cookies in fun Valentine-themed boxes to unsuspecting friends and neighbors. 4. Pom-Pom Wreath This is a cute project that doesn’t take a lot of supplies. You will need a cardboard wreath (craft store), red, white, pink and sparkly pom-poms, a hot glue gun, and a piece of ribbon. Have your child glue the pom-poms onto the cardboard until the entire surface is covered. (Help them with the glue gun depending on their age.) Let it dry and then tie a piece of satin ribbon and hang it up! These would be cute hung up on your kids’ bedroom doors.

throughout the heart, filling it up completely. Lay a second piece of contact paper over the top of the heart, making sure you press it flat. Start in the middle and push out the air bubbles to the sides. Cut the heart out of the contact paper. Punch a hole at the top of the heart and string a piece of yarn through it. Hang the stained-glass ornament on your window and enjoy the sunshine coming through the delicate pieces of tissue paper. 2. Valentine Card Bags These are a simple, yet special treat that my friends in a moms’ group got me hooked on years ago. You’ll need a paper bag (lunch size) for each child, markers, and Valentine’s stickers. Have each person write his or her name on the outside of the bag and then decorate with stickers. Once everyone is done, open up the bags and get them ready to collect Valentines that each person has brought. This would be fun craft to do during a playdate or for a preschool event. Can you say, “Homeroom Mom?” 3. Heart-Shaped Sugar Cookies Who doesn’t love cookies? Find your favorite recipe and let your kids help you roll the dough,

5. Conversation Hearts This is my favorite craft and something I saw on social media that I do every year with my kids. Spend an afternoon cutting out hearts from construction paper and writing things on them about each other. For example, one of the hearts I wrote on for my son said, “You inspire me.” I hung that one up on the first day of February. The idea is to hang up a new heart every single day until the last day of the month. By the end of the month, everyone’s doors will be covered with hearts and compliments. I think some people get scared off when they hear the word “crafts,” but I promise it doesn’t always have to be that way. Take some of these ideas I’ve shared with you and start your own Valentine’s Day traditions with your children. Your kids are never too old to hear, “I love you,” even if it is with a conversation heart.

Second Rule

o, any of you who have a child, or have been a child, or are just simply childish know all about this rule. You know, if something gets dropped on the floor you can still eat it if it’s been there less than five seconds. Scientific tests have shown there’s way more factors than time when your ham sandwich hits the hardwood. Floor material, bacterial exposure and type of item all factor in. In fact, one test showed that watermelon is the worst item to toss on the tile, as it quickly picks up bacteria, while gummy bears are uber resistant to the bad bugs. Therefore, I will continue to eat candy instead of fruit. Case closed. It’s science, right? The main point of all this is that five seconds is just an arbitrary unit of time; similar to the way my children experience the pace of life. Let me explain. Have you ever asked your kid to do something and they respond with “just a second”? Most of us are familiar with what and how long a second is; apparently my children are not. Going back to the science book I found, a second is the time taken by 9,192,631,770 cycles of radiation that comes from electrons moving between two energy levels of the caesium-133 atom. Being not so scientifically inclined, I will give my own definition: a second is how long it takes for the number on the far right of my digital watch (Armitron, of course) to advance one. Apparently my offspring are confused by the caesium-133 atom mumbo jumbo; therefore, when they say, “Just a second,” there is ample time for me to go and get a haircut, in Spain, before they appear. “In a minute” is another fun unit of kid time. Similar to “just a second” a minute can sometimes last a millennia. Either I’ve not taught my children how to tell time (very embarrassing as I work for a watch company) or perhaps there’s an undiscovered black hole somewhere between the upstairs and downstairs of our house that is distorting space time. Last, but not least, let’s talk about the response 28 February 2020

received when I utter the command, “Kids, it’s time to go.” Science goes out the door on this phrase as English now becomes the issue. My kids hear, “It’s time to go,” and think they need to complete the sentence. Like when I say, “It’s time to go,” they hear it as, “It’s time to go… to the bathroom,” or “it’s time go… take a shower,” or “it’s time to go… play Fortnite.” When I explain that “time to go” means get your backsides in the backseat of the car, they respond with “that’s not what you said!” All this to say; we’re all operating on a different time scale. Now I know some of you are reading this going “Geez, he’s a crappy pappy” and “I’d never let my kids do that.” Perhaps, but with three children and 46 combined years of parenting, I’ve found that screaming, yelling, and demanding only gets you so far; and not far enough. So to combat this war on time, I’ve weaponized the aforementioned “five second rule.” Example: when my kids ask me for a glass of water, I wait five seconds to fulfill the request. If they ask me to please grab their backpack out of the car; I wait five seconds. If they ask me to pass the sacred bag of Oreos; I wait five seconds. If they ask if the hoodie they’ve worn for eight days straight is in the washer; I wait five seconds. Using this version of the five second rule on kids raised in the Amazon Prime era of history has achieved amazing results; for me. Five seconds to those spawned in this century is similar to five years for us from the 1900s. They absolutely, completely and totally will not wait five seconds for anything, therefore, they do it themselves. Ah, see, my parenting skills are not so weak! Sure, there’s usually some huffing and puffing and grumpiness, but that’s usually over in, yep, five seconds.

Birth Story:

Joshua by: Laura Mulkey My youngest son was born at 27 weeks in the truck in the parking lot of a convenience store in Garfield. He was born February 19, 1997. His due date was May 28, 1997. Early in the morning of February 19th, I started having light contractions. At the time, I didn’t realize they were contractions -- I just knew I was uncomfortable. I called in to work and took the day off, thinking if I just laid around, they might quit. About 11:30am, the contractions were becoming more uncomfortable. My husband worked nights, so when he woke up at 12:45 or 1pm, he advised me to call the doctor’s office. At 1:30pm, I called the Rogers Clinic for Women and Shelli (the nurse) said to take two Tylenol and to call back in an hour if it didn’t help. I took the Tylenol, but within the hour, the contractions became so strong that I wasn’t able to sit still. Before the hour had passed, I called back and they told me to come on in. My husband took a shower and got ready while I touched up my makeup and changed into maternity jeans. Around 2:35pm we started to leave, but I asked him to go back inside and get a

glass of water for me because I was really thirsty. He came back out with the water and helped me climb up into the truck, but I had to lie in the truck seat, and was unable to sit up or sit still. He asked, “Does it hurt that bad?” We got about half a mile from home and I said, “I think it’s coming now! Its head just came out!” to which my husband replied, “You’re kidding… Should I stop and call 9-1-1?” I told him to pull into the Total convenience store right there and call 9-1-1. He pulled into the parking lot so that my door was facing Hwy 62 and went inside the convenience store while I stayed in the truck. One of the store employees came out and told me that the ambulance was on the way, then went back inside. A minute later, another employee, Melody, came out, opened the truck door and said, “I just need to check you”. She looked and said it was the bag of waters showing, not the head, then went back inside to tell my husband so he could advise the 9-1-1 dispatcher. She came back out and said, “We

need to get your pants off!” By the time she had come back out, however, the baby, Joshua, had already been completely born! The woman broke the bag of waters with her fingernail, and held him and rubbed him (to stimulate him) until the first responders arrived. Once the ambulance arrived, one of the EMT’s started CPR, and continued until the Rogers Advanced Life Support ambulance arrived and transported Joshua to St. Mary’s Hospital in Rogers. (I later learned that his heart rate had been 40 beats per minute)

February 20th. I was released later that morning and we drove to Little Rock that day. At ACH, Joshua weighed 2 lbs. 11 oz. and he was 15” long. Joshua stayed at ACH for two months and was released on April 21st. When released, he weighed 4 lbs 6 ½ oz. He was sent home with an apnea monitor and oxygen. Today, he has mild cerebral palsy (the result of a Grade III bleed), but it’s hardly noticeable.

Another EMT, Jeff, had taken over my care. He asked the others to gather around me to create a shield between me and Highway 62. Another first responder asked Jeff, “Is the baby breathing?” and Jeff replied, “Yes, but labored.” Once I realized the baby was alive, I asked, “Is it a boy or girl? and he told me it was a boy. Melody got in the driver’s side of the truck with me, held my hand, and prayed aloud for the baby. The local ambulance service transported me to St. Mary’s Hospital. That evening, Dr. Schaefer talked to us and recommended that Joshua be transported to Arkansas Children’s Hospital. Due to weather conditions, the Arkansas Children’s helicopter wasn’t able to fly, so the ACH ambulance drove to Rogers and picked Joshua up at 2:00am on

by: Amanda Stokes I was due with our third child on May 15, 2009. We decided to do a home birth, and for the first time I would have a totally non-medicated labor. We had reached May 23 with no baby yet, but cramping pretty good most of the day. I figured then that something would be taking place soon, but then again, I’d been thinking that for a couple of days and nothing had happened yet. The cramps were getting intense as evening came, but I decided to go to bed at about 10pm anyway. Around midnight, I woke up with more intense cramping and timed contractions (which were about three minutes apart, but not extremely painful) for about an hour. Ryan, my husband, filled up the birthing pool about halfway with hot water and got everything out and ready, and we both went back and laid down, where I ended up falling asleep again. At 4am I woke up again from the cramps, which were this time a little more painful, but still nothing extreme, so I called our midwife to give her a heads up. She asked if I wanted her to come right away and I told her no, that I thought I’d be okay for a while. I went to get Ryan up to put some more water in the pool and call my mom to come get the kids, but she didn’t answer. About that time, a whopper of a contraction hit me as I was walking down the hallway. It literally felt like someone hit me in the back and the stomach with a bat at the same time. I was sort of panicked now,

so I went back into our den and called the midwife back to tell her things had really kicked into gear. She told me she would head our way, but she lives in Siloam Springs, so I knew it would be at least an hour before she could get to us. Ryan then called my Granny and told her to come get the kids. All at once, contractions were coming right on top of one another, and they were more intense than anything I’ve ever experienced in my life. I tried sitting, I tried laying down, I tried standing, but nothing would help. Every time I got a contraction, I felt this horrible restless feeling and just felt like I needed to move. I decided to get in the pool, hoping that maybe the warm water would help relax me, but after about five minutes in there, I was done with that. I came down the hall to the bathroom to get out of the wet clothes, put on my husband’s robe and try to lay down. I began to pray out loud (really loud) that God would show me the best way for me to labor because at this point I didn’t realize I was already in the last stage. I was convinced that there would be many more hours of these trainwreck contractions. I sat up and immediately felt a ton of pressure, and about that time my water broke. That was when Ryan’s face got very pale, and he stepped back and all he could get out was, “Oh gosh.” I then told him I felt like I needed to push. He was definitely trying to get me to not do that, but he grabbed my phone and went to the other room (I think he was putting the kids in front of the TV) to call the midwife, but while he was gone I got on the floor on hands and knees and started to push. For some reason, this was the position that felt the most natural. Remember- I’d asked God to show me the best position. I guess this was it because after two pushes, his head came out! I yelled at Ryan, who was still in the other room on the phone. He came in and put the midwife on speakerphone, and she began to give him instructions on finding the umbilical cord. One more push, however, and Cache was out! He cried just before the phone went dead, and the midwife got to hear that he was breathing. I felt immediate relief. It was over almost as fast as it began, at 5am -- only an hour since I’d woken up. The kids had heard him cry and they came running down the hall saying, “Is he here? Is he here?” Ryan shut the door to keep them out and

wrapped Cache up in his robe before helping me get on the bed with him. I got all covered in towels and then we let the kids in to see him before anyone else got there. They were so excited! Granny came in soon after and the midwife’s assistant arrived about 5:20am. Our midwife got there about twenty minutes later. I don’t know when everyone else got there, but soon both of our parents were there, my sister, and other family. He weighed in at 10 pounds on the dot and 21 inches long. Me and Cache took an herbal bath, got dressed, and visited with friends and family all day. After everything settled down, Ryan confessed to me that he had had to go outside at one point to get some air because

he was afraid he was gonna pass out or be sick. I thought he did great! Any man that can step up and take quick action like he did is a hero in my book. When I tell Cache his birthday story, I want him to know how his daddy helped him come into this world safely. I would like to offer this side note: Had I been planning to have Cache at the hospital, he would have been born in the car or on the side of the road. There’s no way we could’ve made it to the hospital. So, God had His hand in this birth from the very beginning with our decision to have him at home. Through all of this, God has provided in abundance and gone above and beyond my wildest expectations.

Once on On This Island Written by Elysa Gardner, on behalf of Once on This Island

2017’s Tony Award-winning Broadway revival of Once on This Island entertained and inspired audience members of all ages with its tale of adventure, romance, kindness, and joy. Among them was 9-year-old Mariama Diop, whose mom entered a lottery and scored seats close enough to the stage that Mari, as she calls herself, was so close to the action that she was able to “reach out and touch the stage.”

The tutor, “Ms. Carolyn,” helps MiMi and Mari both with their responsibilities within the show and in juggling those with schoolwork. “She teaches us that focus is important, and when we’re having trouble we can ask her questions and think about how the character feels,” says Mari. MiMi admits, “It’s been busy, trying to balance school and practice at the same time, but it’s all been worth it, because the show is amazing.”

Now Mari and 8-year-old MiMi Crossland are getting even closer to the action: The precociously gifted young performers are alternating the role of the Little Girl in this Island’s first national tour. The part marks Mari’s first professional production and MiMi’s national tour debut, and it’s taking them from their homes in New York City (Mari) and Upstate New York (MiMi) to cities across the country, accompanied by their mothers and a tutor, Carolyn Dunning.

MiMi adds, “I feel like Ms. Carolyn’s teaching us stuff that maybe we wouldn’t have learned in our other schools, because we get one-on-one time with her, so we can learn more.” Mari’s mom, Laura Sorenson, has been impressed by the tutoring program: “They coordinate everything with the school to make it easy for us. They speak with Mari’s teachers, make sure she gets chess time, French time, her assignments. They modify a little bit; you can’t do a science experiment on the road, because you don’t have a lab, but they find ways to make it work. [Carolyn] works very hard to ensure that when the girls go back to school, they’re where they need to be.”

The character shared by the girls serves an important function in the beloved musical, in which we are told the story of Ti Moune, an orphan saved by the gods from a hurricane to embark on another perilous journey as a young woman. “In the beginning, the story is being told to the Little Girl, and then we become Ti Moune when she’s young—we become part of the story,” MiMi explains. “One of the things we really have to do in the play is listen and act like we’re hearing this story for the first time. Our character is really interested in the story, but it’s hard work.” 36 February 2020

Carolyn also teaches the girls about the cities they’re visiting in advance, says Mari, “so that when we were rehearsing in New York, we’d learn about Paducah (in Kentucky) and what it was like.” Once on location, the tutor takes the girls on field trips, and encourages good behavior through a star system. “When you get to 50 stars you earn a little treat,” Mari says. “At 100 stars, you might

Baum Walker Hall at Walton Arts Center | Feb. 11-16 get cupcakes, or pumpkin-carving messages on Halloween week. It’s amazing. And she doesn’t take away stars, because she wants to encourage us, and that really boosts up our confidence.” MiMi’s mom, Christine Casareale, notes, “This is MiMi’s first job, and I think the amount of work that is involved is more than most people see until well into their adulthood. Even though everyone is really great to them, they’re still expected to perform and act in a mature way.” Mari and MiMi have also been inspired by Island’s celebration of racial and cultural diversity—and what it’s meant to the young fans who come to greet them at the stage door. “One of the little girls I met played Ti Moune in her school play,” says Mari. “She has my skin color, maybe a little darker, and she was inspired to make her own show, because she wants to be an actor when she grows up. And I want to support her and inspire her, and all the other girls and boys who are looking for support.” Greeting audience members and signing autographs has also provided a “great opportunity to meet new people,” says Mari. “In Dayton, Ohio,

there were two girls, one 11 and one 8, who saw the show and wanted to be friends with me,” Mari recalls. “We had several play dates and hung out together, and now one of them is my friend on one of the games I play.” For MiMi, observing a crowd during a performance can be just as rewarding. “You see people in the audience smiling, and you can tell they love it,” she says. “Because there are people who don’t get to see shows like this on Broadway, it’s amazing that we get to travel all over and people get to see these shows that they wouldn’t have seen.” Both girls feel that their show appeals to a particularly wide audience. Once on This Island “can help bring families together,” says Mari, “because it makes people who see it realize how lucky they are to have their families with them.” It’s served that very purpose, in fact, for Mari herself: “Before the show, my mom and I were great friends, best friends—but now I feel like we’re even closer. It’s amazing and inspiring.” MiMi agrees. “I’m seeing families in the audience, and it brings them closer,” she says. “And that’s great.”

am asked on a regular basis how chiropractic can help during pregnancy. As patients begin seeing me during their pregnancy, the next series of questions arise. Can chiropractic help my baby? Is it safe for babies? Are you going to “pop” my baby? Educating yourself about chiropractic during this vulnerable time in your life is so important. Every parent, especially new parents, are spending a precious amount of time researching all the opportunities to improve their child’s life. After reading this, my hope is that you will consider chiropractic as a part of your health care plan.

position for delivery. Chiropractic adjustments are perfect for keeping everything in place, and allowing the baby to drop into the pelvis, which is necessary for the baby to engage to start labor and delivery. Seeing a chiropractor who specializes in pregnancy and pediatrics is extremely helpful, as they know a few more techniques for helping babies assume the proper position. Multiple studies have shown that getting adjusted regularly can decrease labor times, decrease labor pains, and decrease the need for intervention during delivery. During pregnancy, adjustments have been shown to increase sleep, as well as decrease discomfort.

In my eyes, chiropractic is a must during pregnancy. Your body is experiencing change on a daily basis. There are so many things happening in your body, some of which we expect, and some of which we had no clue would happen! A woman’s body is such a miraculous and beautiful thing. Chiropractic will help the body be able to grow, expand, and adjust all along the journey. By keeping the pelvis in the best alignment possible, we allow the baby to have the most room possible. The uterus is deeply connected to the pelvis, so any amount of pelvic imbalance can create intrauterine constraint. This means that the baby does not have the amount of space needed to be in the proper

Following pregnancy, women respond wonderfully to an adjustment to help get the pelvis back into alignment after carrying a baby for 9 months and the intense process of labor and delivery. I always recommend parents bring their newborn in to the follow-up visit for mom. At that visit, I can evaluate their new baby for misalignments, help with nursing (if that applies), and discuss treatment options moving forward. I always assess for lip and tongue ties, which can really hinder a nursing relationship, as well as create excess gas for both breastfeeding babies and bottle-fed babies. Getting your newborn adjusted helps tremendously with regulating their digestive

track, decreasing tension in their body, and increasing regular sleep patterns. As far as the concerns regarding “popping” babies or adjustments hurting them, the answer is simply “no.” I never pop a baby’s bones or create any amount of pain. An adjustment on a baby is very gentle, non-forceful, and quite relaxing. Most people report that they noticed a huge change in their baby’s overall tension, amount of restful sleep, and improved bowel movements almost immediately. Some parents even have to change a diaper before they leave the clinic. We have adjusted both of our daughters within 30 minutes of their birth. Ongoing care for both mom and baby is extremely important for their bond, healing, and overall health. Most of the patients I have worked with over the last decade will say that they found chiropractic care to be essential for their pregnancy and first year of their new baby’s life. Taking the time for some self-care is so important for a new mom. Sometimes just having a safe place to let your guard down and be honest with a physician about the stress and sense of an overwhelming life that you feel you are living is worth everything! I can honestly say that working with pregnant women and helping them through such a special time in their life is the best part of my career. I truly can relate to women and what they are going through, both emotionally and physically, which so important for a doctor-patient relationship. If you have been wondering if chiropractic can help you, please do yourself a favor and come in for a consultation and allow me the opportunity to answer all your questions!

OB Emergency Department at Willow Creek Did you know there’s a 24/7 OB/ GYN Emergency Department here in Northwest Arkansas? Willow Creek Women’s Hospital opened the first dedicated 24/7 OB/GYN emergency department in Arkansas in 2016. The service enhances patient safety and care by ensuring that a boardcertified physician specializing in obstetrics and gynecology (OB/GYN) is in the hospital and available at all times: 24 hours a day, seven days a week and every day of the year. Willow Creek Women’s Hospital remains the only hospital in Northwest Arkansas with OB/GYN specialists, neonatologists, and anesthesiologists all available 24/7 to care for the special needs of pregnant women and their babies or for gynecological emergencies, including those requiring emergency surgery. The hospital is located in Johnson, just off exit 69 of I-49. “Because of our program, hospital-based boardcertified OB/GYNs are available around the clock to focus on providing care for patients in the hospital setting, including consistent care to patients in the hospital as well as emergency care to those arriving in labor and delivery,” said Juli McWhorter, Chief Administrative Officer and Chief Nursing Office for Willow Creek.

Knowledgeable Emergency Care

Willow Creek wants expectant mothers experiencing complications to be seen right away by a board-certified OB/GYN, who can provide care until the patient’s own doctor can evaluate the mother and baby’s condition. “Our Emergency Department OB/GYNs work with each patient’s primary OB/GYN provider – if they have one – to provide immediate care and help make decisions about hospital admission or discharge,” she said. These dedicated OB/GYN physicians provide a number of services, including supporting the care of high-risk pregnancy patients and delivering babies for patients who don’t already have an obstetrician. 40 February 2020

Why might an expectant mother-to-be come to the OB ED?

• Concern about pre-term labor • Pelvic pain • Abnormal vaginal bleeding • Urological conditions, such as bladder infections or urinary tract infections • Conditions related to high-risk pregnancy (example: high blood pressure)

Urgent gynecologic care available

Additionally, patients can get an expedited assessment and treatment plan by a board-certified OB/GYN for urgent gynecologic (GYN) conditions, which can include pain or bleeding, post-operative GYN surgery complications, or urological conditions. Dr. Todd Bashuk serves as Medical Director of Operations, directing care in the OB ED at Willow Creek. “I was so excited to be opening the first OB ED in the state of Arkansas. Our mission is to make sure no matter what emergency happens, we’re there to take care of you and your baby. Willow Creek has a Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and is able to handle any emergency a baby may have at 24 weeks and above. We have delivered many babies under two pounds, and as early as 24 weeks, and so many have survived.” To see a video featuring Dr. Bashuk, visit this link: http://bit.ly/OBGYN-ED

About Northwest Health

Northwest Health offers NICU services at two hospitals. A Level III NICU is available at Willow Creek Women’s Hospital (WCWH) while a Level II NICU is available at Northwest Medical CenterBentonville. Board-certified neonatologists, neonatal nurse practitioners and neonatal nurses provide care around the clock for these most delicate of patients – including babies who have weighed less than one pound at birth and whose systems are immature and need constant help to function. The most critically ill babies receive care at a one-nurse-to-one-baby ratio. Anyone who is experiencing a medical emergency should call 9-1-1 to receive the fastest care.

Educator opens The Goddard School in Rogers Teacher transforms 20 years of teaching history to high schoolers and coaching football into educating a younger generation of learners. For two decades, Spencer Hill stood in front of a class filled with high schoolers to teach history in the hopes of one day seeing his students develop the same love for it as he did. He had that same mentality when out on the football field leading a team to victory. Now, he’s shifting his focus to a younger generation of learners by opening The Goddard School®, a nationally acclaimed early childhood education franchise, in Rogers, AR. As the on-site owner of the newest location, Spencer is meeting the need for a high-quality early childhood education program that provide sa play-based learning experience in a nurturing environment. Since he has a background in teaching, and was inspired to open up his own business, he felt an early childhood education center was the best fit for him and his community. “My background is teaching high schoolers, but watching my own children grow up, learn, and develop in their early years opened my eyes more about the important role early childhood education plays in development,” Spencer said. “There’s a huge need for high quality early childhood education programs in northwest Arkansas.” For more than 30 years, The Goddard School has used the most current, academically endorsed methods to ensure that children from six weeks to six years old have fun while learning the skills they need for longterm success in school and in life. The Goddard School’s play-based F.L.EX.® Learning

Program (Fun Learning Experience) is grounded in research on how children learn best: children experience the deepest, most genuine learning when they are having fun. The focus is on building each child’s emotional, academic, social, creative, and physical skills to provide a well-rounded experience and ensure each one becomes confident, joyful and fully prepared in school and in life. Goddard boasts more than 500 schools educating more than 65,000 students in 37 states, and their comprehensive play-based curriculum, developed with early childhood education experts, provides the best childhood preparation for social and academic success. “My goal is to partner with parents to create the best early learning experience in Northwest Arkansas. To do that, I plan on leading a faculty of highly motivated individuals that love early childhood education and want to create a culture that is safe, secure, and encourages children to engage in fun activities that spark learning and development,” Spencer said. “It’s about investing in the lives of children and partnering

MAY is when we honor mothers across the area. It is your chance to nominate your favorite mom and let us know what makes her special. JUNE : It's Dad’s turn! For Father's Day, we want to shine the spotlight on the people who take on the important role of being a father.

For children battling a critical illness, a wish is more than a dream. It can be a turning point that can give them the emotional and physical strength to keep going.
