HELLO I PLANNED CLAUDIA’S FIRST BIRTHDAY FOR MONTHS, STAYING UP FOR HOURS ON A REGULAR BASIS CUTTING, PACKING, COOKING, GLUEING AND EVEN SEWING. I eBayed, I Spotlighted, I Googled (no Pinterest back then!!) just to make it the perfect party. She was my first child so this was my debut as a partyorganising mum. It was such a mission – almost like my wedding plans! Putting this ‘Party’ edition of Peekaboo together has only shown me what I did for Claudia was ‘miniature’ compared to the elaborate setups mums are doing today. Who else better to speak with and answer all of those party/dessert table styling questions but the lady of the hour, Amy Atlas, and our editor was lucky enough to get some one-on-one time with her, and even got some our our fans’ questions answered. It is a must-read. Other must-reads in this edition are the story on the fabulous Koolaman Designs sisters – down-to-earth girls who have turned a great idea into an equally as great business from their kitchen benches. And we were also lucky enough to catch TV personality Shelley Craft on the eve of the birth of her second baby – that woman has got loads going on! But one of my favourite sections this edition is the Winter Warmers fashion spread. We had such a blast styling and shooting those mini models. I hope you enjoy that section as much as we loved bringing it to you. And while on the subject of birthdays and parties, the Peekaboo crew would love to wish our Sydney and Melbourne editions a very happy first birthday! Yes, it’s been a year since we entered those brave new territories with our magazine and we have made so many new friends along the way. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your patronage. The days of wine tasting don’t need to be put on hold with the arrival of kids. Not far out of Brisbane is a top spot for a glass of wine and some nibbles, with lots of room for the kids to play – Sirromet Winery at Mt Cotton. There are baby change facilities and high chairs to make your life easier too. If you’re looking for a meal in a more formal setting, Sirromet is home to Restaurant Lurleen’s. There are rave reviews about breakfast at Lurleen’s, not only because of the enclosed play area, high chairs and baby change facilities, but also because of the very welcoming staff. Not only do they have a children’s menu, they have been known to puree roast pumpkin, by request, for the youngest diners.

Our family is quite partial to yum cha. When our boys were very small we could take them in the pram and the hustle and bustle and buzz of a yum cha restaurant would actually send them to sleep. Now that they’re old enough to eat what we eat, the hustle and bustle and the food on trolleys is entertainment for them. There are plenty of yum cha restaurants around, particularly in Sunnybank and Fortitude Valley. One of our favourites is Landmark. They provide booster seats for the kids and there are baby change facilities just outside in the shopping centre. I must begin by saying prams and energetic toddlers may find this cafe a little too squeezy. But don’t let that stop you from enjoying what some call, the best coffee in Brisbane. Dandelion and Driftwood have considered those of us who would find it difficult to sit too long in a small cafe by providing a coffee cart out the front. You can grab one of Brisbane’s best coffees and talk a short stroll down the road to TC Beirne Park. It’s only 100m from the cafe and a great playground for the preschoolers. If you would like to take the kids and enjoy the café though, I would suggest heading out back to the tea garden via a side entrance down the driveway. It is definitely worth the trip for the scrumptious cakes and the wonderful staff.

Cake pops are so much fun and they make pretty portable party food. Plus, as a super bonus, they are so easy to make they are a great introduction to cooking for kids. Children love rolling the mixture into shape and, with practice, they can help dip and add sprinkles or decorations to create their own masterpieces. While this recipe is for Tim Tam cake pops, once you have the basics down pat you can whip up your own cakes using your favorite recipe or a packet mix, add enough butter cream icing to make the cake crumb moist and then follow the instructions from Step 2. Regular chocolate melts from the baking section of the grocery store can be used or, for a special occasion, buy already coloured candy melts from specialty stores to co-ordinate your pops with your party theme. Driving north up the Silver City Highway on her way to Broken Hill for an agricultural fair back in 2008, Lisa O’Keefe could never have dreamed how the next chapter of her life would be written. In hindsight, the “Silver City” signs should have been a clue… Now, exactly four years on and driving up that exact same Silver City Highway on the exact same 4.5-hour trip from her home at Koolaman Station near Balranald in southwest New South Wales, to Broken Hill for the exact same agricultural fair, she and sister Stacey Clayton can reflect on what has been an unexpected yet shiny, happy journey in a short timeframe. You see, these sisters are the gurus behind the Koolaman Designs range of bespoke jewellery. Those stunning pieces of silver and gold jewellery – pendants and necklaces, bangles and bracelets, keytags and cuff links – made extra special and truly individual by the addition of hand-stamped names of their customers’ loved ones. Talking to Peekaboo from her car on the drive up to Broken Hill Agfair, Lisa is honest in her admission that the business’s success in a relatively short period of time has been astounding. “We just never thought it would be like this,” she admits. The girls and their older brother Carl grew up on the land at their parents’ farm near Rutherglen in Victoria.

Lisa, 36, studied agricultural science at university before landing a job as an agronomist. It was a uni friend who helped Lisa meet Christian and the pair went on to marry and move on to Christian’s parents’ property – Koolaman Station. The 73,000 acre piece of sheep- and wheat-farming heaven is now in fourth-generation hands with the addition of Lisa and Christian’s three kids – Augustus, 7, Eliza, 6, and Isobel, 3. Stacey, 33, took a slightly different career path, studying finance and accounting at university. While she and husband Luke are living on part of her family’s original farm, they utilise the wide-open space to operate a trucking business rather than going down the traditional path of farming the land. And the wideopen space is handy when you also have three kids running around – Chloe, 6, Leonard, 4, and Edward, 3.

So, given the agronomy and finance backgrounds, and life in regional towns on vast pitches of dirt, you have to wonder how these girls became superstars of bespoke bling? Well, it’s simple. They saw a unique product and fell in love with it. It was Christmas 2006, and among all the frivolity of the festive season, the girls were enjoying a visit from a family member from Canada. The relative was wearing a really unusual necklace adorned with the names of her children that she had bought while in her home country.

With the baby bonuses from Gus and Eliza’s births in Lisa’s back pocket and Stacey being presented a handy wad of cash from the government for giving birth to Chloe, the mumpreneurs thought they’d utilise their new-found wealth and invest in this jewellery-making thing. Once the girls had designed and stamped a few pieces, wearing a path to and from the drawing board, they thought it was time to present to the world their shiny new product range (and when I say ‘present

And they couldn’t find one. Cue the lightbulb moment “We’ve both got crafty genes,” Lisa says. “My maternal grandmother taught me how to sew at an early age and I’d always been into craft. We were considering this jewellery, thinking ‘How hard can it really be?’. ”

to the world’ I’m talking about a Mildura ladies evening – close enough, hey?). There were seven or eight pieces in the range at that time including the ‘Kate’ ring-shaped pendant, the ‘Chloe’ and ‘MaMa’ rectangular dog tags, and the small ‘Eliza’ disc pendants which are all still in the current range. “When the mothers there saw the jewellery they were raving about it,” Lisa says. It gave the sisters a glimmer of hope that they could turn this hobby into a fully-fledged business. She remembers the day her first ‘proper’ order came through. It was for a set of MaMa dogtags. That particular customer has continued to buy Koolaman Designs pieces right through the years. “We used to give each other high-fi es every time we’d get one or two orders come in,” Lisa laughs. While a stall at a following “dodgy” Melbourne baby show cost the pair financially in the start-up phase and was a major set back, it wasn’t enough to dampen their spirits. They continued to hone their craft and just before Mother’s Day in 2008 at Broken Hill Agfair, the business was cemented. “The response to the jewellery there was amazing. We were driving home with all this money and all these orders thinking ‘We’ve done it!’, ‘We’ve cracked it!’, ” Lisa recalls. Just like any start-up business being juggled in between pregnancies, births and busy baby days, Lisa says the girls didn’t draw a wage for three years. They did the work out of a love for the product and

an increasing awareness that the range had potential. It also helps if you go into business alongside one of your closest friends. “We are so like-minded and in tune,” Lisa says of her relationship with Stacey. “We’ve been really close since we were 16 or 17 years old. We are always on the phone to each other – probably every day!” Having babies at the same time means the girls also understand the pressures of family life and always consider each other’s family situations before work commitments like trade shows, markets and other business trips away, for example. In fact, it’s their tight-knit family that keeps the sisters’ business dream alive. While on the phone to Peekaboo in her car, Lisa has Dad sitting in the passenger seat. He’ll be an extra pair of hands when they arrive at Agfair to show their wares and he will also share the driving responsibility when they make their return trip late on Sunday night. And Mum is back at Koolaman Station keeping an eye on the cherubs. The girls even rope in their cousins to man Koolaman Designs market stalls in Brisbane and Adelaide.

the girls more time to come up with new designs and work on taking the business forward. So what is each sister’s favourite Koolaman Designs piece? Lisa wears a circular ‘Mia’ pendant on a long, large ball chain and is also partial to her ‘Amelia’ seed necklace and matching bracelet. Stacey loves her similar ‘Audrey’ pendant as well as the ‘MaMa’ dog tags on a super long chain. Lisa says the ‘Audrey’ circular pendant is one of their best sellers along with the ‘Eliza’ and ‘MaMa’ dog tags, but they find that popularity for pieces is seasonal and dependent on celebratory events on the calendar such as Mother’s Day and Father’s Day. And why does she think their jewellery has been so popular? “There’s the quality – they are nice heavy silver pieces – and then there’s the fact that they are so individual, but I think it’s mainly just because of the emotional response. People just fall in love with them.”

“We really have Mum and Dad to thank for all this,” Lisa says. “And I’m lucky to have my inlaws on the property as well. It’s all about trust. When we need to bring some help into the business we know we can always trust our family first”

So what’s next on the Koolaman Designs drawing board? Check out their website for the brand new ‘Hide’ range, just launched in May, which features the traditional Koolaman silver pendants but displayed on cool Kangaroo leather wrist bands and wider leather cuffs. While they are unisex, they will be pitched at the male wearer. Lisa says her “blokey bloke” husband Christian is a big fan of his cuff and hasn’t taken it off since obtaining it four months ago.

While Lisa and Stacey started out hand stamping each individual piece themselves, they have since been able to employ some help with the process. There are three other mums, living on farms around Koolaman Station, who pitch in with stamping to give

buttons and bows... Ruby was the lucky birthday girl for this exquisite buttons-and-bows themed fifth birthday party. Her mum Dawn, from Ruby May Designs, wanted the colours to be delicate and pretty and she made the cake and the sugarpaste buttons to match. Although it took a little while to make all the buttons, Ruby’s mum was very happy with the end result. The cookies are by Nikki Coogle with extra little buttons added by Dawn to finish them o f. The white letters, from Typo, were embellished with buttons. The little marshmallow bags hang from a mini clothesline by Maileg. The labels are from Meri Meri (Dawn’s sister in Dublin has a shop called Treat-Deli & Gift shop). Dawn made the cupcakes and placed them on little stands that she also bought in Dublin (although the stands are meant for tealights, they worked well to give the cupcakes some height, she says). Last year they kickstarted this idea with China (to pay homage to their Eurasian heritage) and this year they could not go past the vibrant energy and colours of Mexico - so they threw a fiesta for the boys. Mum Li-Ann wanted a to put together a modern fiesta and designed the invitations with a play on their identical features as a silhouette face with Aztec patterns which was then carried through the rest of the party. There was a lot of DIY involved with the backdrop and favours, and little bandanas for the drink bottles too. Li-Ann even got custom made fabric in the patterns of the invitation and had cute ponchos made for the boys. Each kid was given a sombrero to take home and the highlight for the little guests was definitely the hilli piñata and decorating their own maracas. cowboy and indians... When Jack’s mummy wanted a ‘Cowboys and Indians’ theme for her son’s party, she instantly thought of Petit Atelier as an ideal space. Just Call Martha, The Little Big Company and ham&pea got together to style the fifth birthday bash with rustic blue gingham, burlap and a touch of red running though the styling of the theme. Leoni from Just Call Me Martha made a double chocolate mud cake with inspiration from the ham&pea invitation. The birthday boy loved the arrows sticking out of the cake as well as the cowprint gingerbread cookies which were made to match the rustic theme. Other food on the day included double salted caramel cupcakes, rustic Oreo pops and savoury food for the kids. ham&pea designed the fabric backdrop and printables. The gorgeous favour bags were from Sambellina with ham&pea thankyou tags on top. The fabulous head dress is from Seed kids and all the plates and cups were from Petit Atelier which has gorgeous products in store. The PaperCraft Room provided all the paper hanging pom poms in matching colours and the beautiful cutlery was from Paper Eskimo, which is in store at Petit Atelier. Little Big Company supplied the horse shoes, jars, old-fashioned labels, crates, caramel swizzle sticks and lollipops for the party which are also available at Petit Atelier. When you think of party styling experts there’s really only one name that instantly comes to mind – Amy Atlas. Peekaboo magazine was lucky to get some time with the amazing New Yorker last month to pick her brain about everything from her own memories of childhood parties to her new book and when she’s coming out to party with us.

Can you remember the exact moment when you realised that you could/should earn a living out of dessert tables and party styling? After I had made lots of dessert tables for friends and many more were asking me to do them, I realised I could turn it into a business. I did take some time to explore it first. After it started to really catch on beyond my net of friends, it developed into a business.

What are some of your memories of your own birthday parties as a child? My earliest memory of a birthday party was my 8th birthday party. My Mom made it in our backyard and I remember friends came from all over. At the time, parties were not as big of a deal as they are now. I remember being so thrilled to have a custom train cake and playing games like musical chairs. The memories of that party still make me smile.

You were a lawyer in a previous life. Do you think you would have made a good lawyer if you had stuck at that career? I believe I was a great lawyer. I think there are many careers that one can be great at. However, I wasn’t necessarily happy practising law on an everyday basis. Happiness is key. Tell us about the process involved in compiling your new book, Sweet Designs. Was it a long process or did it come easily? And who got to eat all the goodies at the end of your shoots?! It was a pretty long process. It took almost three years from proposal to publication. When I’ve looked at books in the past, I never would have imagined all of the work that goes into them. I wanted to create a reference guide rather than a coffee table book and that meant creating detailed instructions and a lot of content in addition to the photos. From concept creation to recipe/craft creation to writing to photo shoots to edits to design of the book to the marketing of it, it is an enormous project. And the photo team snacked on most of the sweets each day at the shoot! What’s your favorite dessert table theme/chapter in the book and why? Oh, that is a killer question. I’m so attached to each and every chapter after working on and having these ideas in my head for

What’s your all-time favorite recipe in the book and why? Again, a hard question! I do love the Key Lime bars on page 99. They are citrusy, refreshing and they have the most delicious graham cracker crust.

Nowadays, do you throw your own birthday parties or do you make hubby take you out instead? I love to make other people’s events special and memorable but for my own birthday, I tend to celebrate quietly with my husband and boys. In relation to kids’ birthday parties, what’s your favorite theme? My favorite theme for boys would be board games/games night since I love playing board games with my own kids. For girls, there is nothing quite like a spa party. Name three things you would include on a dessert table when styling both of those themes? For Games Night – my Twister cheesecake pops, domino blondies and marshmallow dice from the book. For the Spa Party – Essie polish coloured cupcakes, spa mask cupcakes and robe cookies. What are some simple, but effective, ideas to ensure your party is memorable? Keep it as simple as possible. The more work you give yourself, the less time you will have with your guests. I also like intimate parties so you can have quality time with each guest. What’s been the most memorable dessert table

you’ve ever styled and why? The most memorable dessert table that I styled was for a little boy’s birthday party. The planner wanted something that was really different than what I am used to and I had to push my creative limits. It is those times when you really grow. I loved the way the table turned out. More importantly, the client loved the table, too. Which US celebrity/public figu e would you most like to cater/style a party for? Oprah. Which Aussie celeb would you like to style a party for and why? What theme would it take? Hugh Jackman. It would definitely be a song-and-dancethemed table. Other than your family and friends, what’s the one thing you can’t live without? The outdoors What’s the one food you can’t live without? Peanut butter Eating all those amazing desserts and lollies (for market research purposes, of course!), how do you stay thin and fit? Yes, it is definitely for market research! While I do love my sweets, I try to eat everything in moderation. Also, I love running, which helps the body and mind. You have a huge following on Facebook - do you love social media? I love social media because it allows me to connect with my supporters directly. I can get feedback in real-time and I get to directly fin out from supporters what they like and don’t like. I also learn from them. Have you been to Australia before? I have not been there yet but plan on coming out there soon! What are you working on right now? Planning that trip to Australia! Tell us something people don’t know about you? I tend to be very hard on myself!

Make the birthday cake base a week in advance and freeze it. Ice it the night before. It is also easier to ice frozen cake. What’s the one thing that mums tend to overlook? A helper to organise games and take photos so it give you time to organise food, drinks and keep things running smoothly. Mum’s need time to chat to the guests and have a chance to enjoy themselves too. What’s your one tip to mums just launching into kid-party organising mode? Write lots of lists! Try to buy in advance and make and freeze as much food as possible before the event. Who do you look to for party inspiration? Pinterest, Facebook and weddings (they always have beautiful tables, colour combos and favour ideas). Tell us about stand-out childhood memories of your very own birthdays? I really remember my brothers and I getting up to mischief on those days. And Mum’s great cakes, of course! What’s been your stand-out party triumph? And failure? My triumph is seeing happy faces on the kids. I have never had a failure but the rain has added a few stressful moments.

It would have to be the amazing birthday cakes my mother would make. From a business point of view, what’s been your stand-out party triumph? Failure? When Ferrari expressed how thrilled they were with the Ferrari party we designed. A memorable disappointment for me would be finding the per ect carousel ride for an event and not being able to fit it through the access point (luckily I realised before ordering).

Seeing smiles on the children’s faces and seeing how much fun they are having with all of the activities provided. In regards to a failure, I would have to say that when you have an outside party, try to keep the food table away from areas where ants can easily get to. Also have a back-up plan if organising an outside party as rain can ruin it very quickly!

Tell us about childhood memories of your very own birthdays? My birthday parties as a child were very simple, I remember bags of chips, lemonade and the table decorated with balloons and streamers. My mum actually hated baking and doesn’t have a crafty bone in her body, which is very ironic seeing as that is my passion in life. What’s been your stand-out party triumph? Failure? I have observed that parties with lots of hands-on crafts have been favourites amongst my peers and tend to go viral on the internet. My scariest request was creating edible stationary for a table to celebrate Kikki K’s 10th anniversary along with 80 edible stationary boxes as party favours. I had moments where I thought I would not be able to pull it off but in the end it was perfect.

NEW KID ON ‘THE BLOCK’ WHILE THE CONTESTANTS OF HIT TV SHOW ‘THE BLOCK’ WERE UP TO THEIR ARMPITS IN PAINT AND PLASTER AND DUST, SLOGGING IT OUT ON THE SOUTH MELBOURNE SITE, ONE OF THE SHOW’S PRESENTERS WAS BUSY PUTTING THE FINAL TOUCHES ON HER OWN CREATION – BABY NO. 2 STORY BELINDA GLINDEMANN

Most of us working mums juggle babies and career and family and friends. And that makes us busy people. But when you are juggling babies and career and family and friends and pregnancy – and that career has you regularly travelling interstate with family in tow and requires you to be bubbly and fabulous on a television screen, then ‘busy’ takes on a whole new definition. Shelley Craft is well known to all of us. Whether you are watching her on hit renovation reality show The Block at the moment, or you relate her celebrity to Australia’s Funniest Home Video Show or even The Great Outdoors, at home she is just ‘Mum’. Shelley and her cameraman husband of two and a half years, Christian Sergiacomi, are the very proud parents of little Milla Grace but later this month the trio will become a quartet with the arrival of a sibling for Milla. When Peekaboo caught up with Shelley at her Byron Bay home recently, she is in ultimate Mum mode. Our conversation is peppered with those

totally normal, innocent toddler interruptions – questions and whinges and tears and a few more questions – and Shelley is completely comfortable, switching seamlessly from business mode to mummy mode and back again. Shelley grew up in Brisbane’s Brookfield, attending Brisbane Girls Grammar School, and her parents still live in the Sunshine State. While she has been staying in South Melbourne recently while filmin The Block, home is Byron Bay and it’s also the place where she waits patiently for Daughter No. 2 to arrive. Yes, ‘daughter’ No. 2. “Yes, I have found out the sex. My life is so erratic that I like to lock in what I can possibly lock in. The knowledge gives me a bit of control,” she laughs. Bub is due on Shelley’s birthday on June 21 but she will deliver by C-section earlier in the month at John Flynn Private Hospital at Tugun – so her baby will be a “Queenslander!” which makes her happy. “I’ll be squeezing it in – or is that out! – between The Block open houses and the auction.” Shelley says it would have been fun to potentially have her new baby on, or around, her own birthday, as she herself was born the day after her father’s birthday. “I can always remember our family ski holiday at that time of the year when I was growing up,” she says. “We’d celebrate my birthday on the road, in the car, somewhere between Brisbane and the Snowy Mountains and then it would be Dad’s birthday the next day in a hotel somewhere.”

marriage to follow.” Shelley remembers Milla’s birth as a time of great celebration and, funnily enough, it was also a well-deserved break from her hectic schedule. “Hospital was the most relaxing one week I’d had in a long time,” she laughs. “No phone, no computer. When it was time to leave I asked the nurse where I had to go to ‘check-out’. She laughed and told me that they ‘discharged’ people from hospital – it wasn’t a hotel.” The idea of juggling two small babies and a career doesn’t faze Shelley. “Everybody does it,” she says. Milla is very portable at the moment and Shelley says she regularly hops on a plane with her daughter to travel to Sydney for filming of the Video Show and bub is also a regular visitor to The Block. “I’m not saying it’s easy to be getting on a plane every other week but you just have to manage the best way you can – the best way for you.” Shelley says her job as a parent is to educate her kids the best she can and including them in her and Christian’s worldly lifestyle gives them practical knowledge of, well, the world. In fact, Shelley could think of nothing better than bringing up her girls in Christian’s native Italy for a few years.

In keeping with our party theme this edition, Peekaboo had to know how Shelley’s first stab at organising a kiddie birthday bash went last year when Milla turned one. Being the uber-hostess, and with the majority of the couple’s family and friends in Queensland, Shelley says she and Christian bought their party to the people, coming up to Brisbane to celebrate Milla’s big day. With all the party preparations on track, including venue hire, a mobile baby animal farm complete with calves, chickens and baby goats and specially ordered cupcakes all tied together with a polkadot theme, there was one element she couldn’t plan for. That big nasty ‘unknown’ – the weather. “It was blowing a gale, pouring with rain and everyone was soaking wet,” she laughs. “But Milla had a good day and that’s the most important thing.”

While Shelley understands some people will have an opinion about women who choose an elective caesarean delivery to suit their lifestyle, she says it’s the best decision for her and Christian. “Really, it’s just one day in a relationship you are going to have with your child for a whole lifetime,” she says. “It’s like weddings and marriages. Some people put all their effort into their wedding day without realising there’s a whole lifetime of

THAI LIFE THAILAND OFFERS SOME GREAT FAMILY-FRIENDLY OPTIONS IF YOU’RE SEARCHING FOR AN ASIAN GETAWAY WITH THE LITTLE TACKERS IN TOW STORY CARLA ADAMS

Have you ever tried announcing that you are taking your four year old and six year old to an Asian country? Cue the horror stories. It seems every second non-traveller has heard tales of kidnapping, extortion and food poisoning on a lethal scale. While sorting fact from fantasy, the stories I had heard about Phuket, a traditional ‘family holiday’ destination in Thailand were consistent when it came to crowds, higher prices and young tourists partying hard (and noisily). We wanted to explore this beautiful southern island of Thailand, but we also wanted to relax in peace and quiet. Our solution? Go east. A 40-minute journey south east of Phuket airport will have you at the very tip of the island, at Cape Panwa resort. Well away from the tourist hubs along the western coastline of Phuket, this is a relaxed, elegant destination with its own private white sand beach, a variety of local dining options

and fantastic views of Phuket’s southern coastline (from the spa on our balcony anyway). Miss Four and Miss Six could have been in any country in the world and they still would have been impressed most by the customised egg choices at the breakfast buffet. Would they have their eggs sunny side up or scrambled? In a plain omelette-for-one or with cheese and vegies? Maybe just a boiled egg on the side? Breakfast at the excellent buffet each morning consisted of such monumental decisions, before heading to the pool. If you’re four, six or even 30-something, it’s fun boarding the trolley car which takes you the very short (but very steep) journey from the main resort area down to the beachfront. There, an open-air restaurant serves up great pizzas and stir fry, icecream and drinks. We found a piece of white sandy cove all to ourselves one sunny afternoon, only to be disturbed by local staff whose job it is to

sweep the debris from the beach and keep it clean for the enjoyment of the tourists. I sought refuge in Cape Panwa’s open-air pavilion situated just back from the beach. Sae, my delightful 61-year old masseuse, has been massaging clients there for 18 years and is due to retire this year. “I get tired,” she said, an explanation somewhat challenged as she deftly hoisted my leg and forced it back into my chest, my knee turned out at a 40-degree angle. This is true Thai massage – it involves moderate gymnastic moves but, combined with the ocean breeze, Sae’s stretching, pulling and kneading left me truly relaxed. After dragging ourselves away to explore the excellent Phuket Butterfly Garden and Insect World, and eat at the amazing Suay Restaurant in Phuket’s old town, we headed up the eastern coastline to an even less populated area –Yamu. villas are modern and amazingly spacious. We stayed in a Garden Residence and it was bliss to have our two-story residence serviced every day. ‘Juk’s Adventures’ is one of the best kids’ clubs we have ever encountered – our girls demanded to go each day. The club takes up a full two-storey garden residence building and is air conditioned. Downstairs are climbing walls, a ball pit, boxes of toys and a full range of high-quality Scandinavian wooden toys. The children are taken from activity to activity and each is engaging and creative, from plaster painting to the best balloon artist I’ve ever seen, to chill-out zones and story time. But the pièce de résistance here is the 1600sqm swimming pool – one of the largest on Phuket. Its granite wall and sparkling blue tiles create a stunning atmosphere to soak up the sun. Club Yamu’s one restaurant serves classy Thai fare but there are a few other good options around; Yamu Seafood is located almost directly across the road from the entrance to the resort. The owners are Muslim so alcohol is not served, but fabulous fruit frappes were enough to quench our thirst on a muggy evening. A serene sunset seaview, gently bobbing traditional fishing boats and a host of crabs making busy preparations for the night on the shoreline had us entranced. Just 10 minutes drive

by taxi from the resort will take you to Gittano, a popular local ex-pat restaurant serving Mexicaninspired fare. Almost two weeks into our holiday we were relaxed and had avoided the crowds, but we felt we hadn’t yet seen the real Thailand – you know, the one without breakfast buffets. Locals recommended nearby Koh Yao Noi island and it was just the thing. Taking a taxi to the local dock, we paid a pittance for our ticket and boarded the faded old wooden longtail boat with a little trepidation. The patchwork of lifejackets stored above us seemed very old – but I supposed no use was a good thing, right? With a roar we took off, crashing through the sea, almost at eye level with the surface. Various emerald tipped islets and islands emerged from the haze of the turquoise Malacca Strait, into which Miss Four and Miss Six trailed mini-wakes with their hands. Disembarking at Koh Yao Noi pier just over an hour later, we found our real Thailand. A local tuk tuk (motorbike with a seat for passengers at the back) driver took us on a tour of the island for $5. We drove through the local village, where housing ranged from sheets of metal stacked against each other to tiny concrete abodes, past rubber plantations, the primary school and tiny convenience ‘huts’ stocked with soft drink and fresh coconuts. We decided to

stop about halfway up the island’s east coast, on a stretch of muddy beach made interesting by plenty of crabs and coral (fun for the kids), and some tiny cafes serving up beers, fruit smoothies and platters of grilled seafood to tables plonked on the sand. It was simple, earthy and very pretty, with views out to local diving hot spots and only a handful of other tourists around. Accommodation on the island ranges from budget backpacker ($16 per night) up to luxury fi e star, but there’s only a few options at either end. After lunch our tuk tuk driver came back for us, for by then I’d read through the local guidebook and wanted to check out Rice Paddy, one of the most popular spots on the island to enjoy a great meal, a fabulous iced coffee or scrumptious homemade icecream, while watching friendly water buffalo in the fields below. We wished we could extend our day trip, and almost did when we missed the first and then the second longtail boats home. Yao Noi is considered by locals a ‘hidden secret’, being much closer to Phuket than other favourites like Phi Phi Island or Koh Lanta and it’s certainly as far from the crowds as a family on holiday in Thailand could ask for. www.capepanwa.com www.clubyamu.com www.tourismthailand.org (The writer and her family were assisted by Tourism Thailand)

BEFORE I HAD MY SON, I HAD LIMITED EXPERIENCE OF KIDS’ BIRTHDAY PARTIES STORY ZAC’S MUM BLACK ILLUSTRATION BARB BRUNO

Before I had my son, I had limited experience of kids’ birthday parties. The few my partner, Josh, and I had been to had been brief affairs. Not the parties, but our appearances. We were the “drop the ill-thought-out present on the table, grab a sausage, sit as far away from the kids as possible and make an early break for the door” types. Sadly, it’s not the best form to skip out early on your own kid’s birthday party so when Zac turned one, we had no choice but to try and make the event as palatable as possible. First up, we made sure we invited everyone who had forced us to go to one of their PG-rated parties. Family members of course get a look in, although we did omit creepy Uncle Des for fear he’d take up residence in the spare room and drill spy holes in the bathroom walls. Also, inviting the fam pretty much guarantees you’ll get help on the catering front. My mum was put in charge of sausage rolls, dip, mini pizza thingies and the all-important birthday cake – the very awesome jelly swimming pool with plastic babies floating in jubes and a pipe cleaner ladder, straight from the Women’s Weekly. Josh swore he would only attend if we could have some kind of animal on a spit, so he was left in charge of the meat portion of the event. I don’t know where he found the bloke, but the meat guy spent four hours standing near the shed, enveloped in smoke, before turning out the best-tasting chicken, lamb and pork anyone at that party had ever eaten. Neighbours on both sides were invited to make up for 12 months of middle-of-the-night crying from both Zac and I, and the rest of the invites were extended to those

hapless friends who were yet to spawn but felt obligated to attend. A marquee was borrowed from a friend (less than festive with its Toyota slogans but beggars can’t be bogans about these things) and some large and obscene plastic toys were scrounged from the local toy library to keep the kids away from the stereo. Most importantly of all, my brother (who works at a winery) was, months in advance, roped into secreting bottles of wine under his jumper at the end of the working day to ensure maximum free drinking for everyone. So when the day in question did indeed roll around, I think I would almost go so far as to say it was actually a bit fun. Of course, Zac cracked it when we sang Happy Birthday (ruining all photo opps), a covert gang of toddlers was busted filling up a pot plant with cordial, two presents were broken almost immediately by children other than Zac, and there were a couple of drunk late-stayers who refused to leave at the end (yep, even kid parties have them) but overall it didn’t make me suicidal. In fact, it ended up being so painless that, against our better judgment, we ended up throwing Zac a smaller but equally as overcatered party when he turned two last year. Sadly, for Zac, I think that will be his last party for a while. Having just discovered we are having a surprise baby in October – four weeks before Zac’s third birthday – I know I will be too busy crying in the middle of the night with a needy newborn to spend hours making potato salad or ensuring nobody is sticking buttered bread in the DVD player. But friends and family rest assured, we’ll make it up to you with two parties next year. Sucked in.
