PICK UP THE PILE Hello, first off I’d like to state that this is not an article, just an idea that I wanted to pass by everyone. I have a project that would incorporate the Pick up the Pile campaign and give young entrepreneurs a chance to flex their prowess. Each neighborhood would set up a stand very similar to the lemonade stand and educate dog walkers on the hazards of pet waste. They would have pamphlets to hand out and then sell the window decals that are easy to install and remove. The proceeds for the decals will go to a no kill animal shelter or rescue group for their city. The window decals are part of a national movement...pardon the pun...to educate people about the hazardous bacteria that pet waste carries. This is an opportunity to build skills in our budding citizens (our children), to be motivated for a cause, to be conscientious of our environment and philanthropy. If you would like to be a part of this campaign please contact me. See attached window decal it clings on the inside for easy on/ off...it’s not permanent, just for this campaign.

The Green Thing

In the line at the store, the cashier told an older woman that she should bring her own grocery bags because plastic bags weren’t good for the environment. The woman apologized to him and explained, “We didn’t have the green thing back in my day.” The clerk responded, “That’s our problem today. Your generation did not care enough to save our environment.” He was right -- our generation didn’t have the green thing in its day. Back then, we returned milk bottles, soda bottles and beer bottles to the store. The store sent them back to the plant to be washed and sterilized and refilled, so it could use the same bottles over and over. So they really were recycled. But we didn’t have the green thing back in our day. We walked up stairs, because we didn’t have an escalator in every store and office building. We walked to the grocery store and didn’t climb into a 300-horsepower machine every time we had to go two blocks. But she was right. We didn’t have the green thing in our day. Back then, we washed the baby’s diapers because we didn’t have the throw-away kind. We dried clothes on a line, not in an energy gobbling machine burning up 220 volts -- wind and solar power really did dry the clothes. Kids got hand-me-down clothes from their brothers or sisters, not always brand-new clothing. But that old lady is right; we didn’t have the green thing back in our day. Back then, we had one TV, or radio, in the house -- not a TV in every room. And the TV had a small screen the size of a handkerchief (remember them?), not a screen the size of the state of Montana. In the kitchen, we blended and stirred by hand because we didn’t have electric machines to do everything for us. When we packaged a fragile item to send in the mail, we used a wadded up old newspaper to cushion it, not Styrofoam or plastic bubble wrap. Back then, we didn’t fire up an engine and burn gasoline just to cut the lawn. We used a push mower that ran on human power. We exercised by working so we didn’t need to go to a health club to run on treadmills that operate on electricity. But she’s right; we didn’t have the green thing back then. We drank from a fountain when we were thirsty instead of using a cup or a plastic bottle every time we had a drink of water. We refilled writing pens with ink instead of buying a new pen, and we replaced the razor blades in a razor instead of throwing away the whole razor just because the blade got dull. But we didn’t have the green thing back then. Back then, people took the streetcar or a bus and kids rode their bikes to school or walked instead of turning their moms into a 24-hour taxi service. We had one electrical outlet in a room, not an entire bank of sockets to power a dozen appliances. And we didn’t need a computerized gadget to receive a signal beamed from satellites 2,000 miles out in space in order to find the nearest pizza joint. But isn’t it sad the current generation laments how wasteful we old folks were just because we didn’t have the green thing back then? Cypress Point - September 2011

CYPRESS POINT Recycling Poll We the residents of Cypress Point need to show our MUD board of directors that we want curb-side recycling. •

Cost 1. Monthly cost of $2.75 to $2.80 per each household in the MUD 10 district 2. Recycling costs will be applied to each household regardless of participation • Recyclable material classifications and handling 1. Plastics 1-7, all glass, aluminum, steel and tin cans, all paper and cardboard 2. Do not need to be separated 3. Residents may use an extra trash can or any can of your choice with a supplied recycle sticker 4. Containers will need to be rinsed out before being placed in recyclables container • Frequency 1. One day per week The more people who participate in the poll, the better the chances are for us to bring curb-side recycling to our neighborhood. If enough people recycle, our trash bill will go down, and may eventually offset the cost of recycling. Please email your vote and/or suggestions to cypresspointnewsletter@yahoo.com or clip and mail the form to the right to: Cypress Point Community Improvement Association 14415 Barker Cypress Rd. Cypress, TX 77429

The purpose of the Memory Loss Care Team at John Wesley United Methodist Church is to provide respite care for the care giver from their task of caring for their loved ones. Studies have shown that the care-giver who does not get some respite from this sometimes constant, and overpowering burden, often becomes ill him or herself. The Care Team and Interfaith CarePartners invite you to join us to celebrate the ninth year of our service. The meeting is scheduled to be held on Tuesday, September 13, at 7:00 PM. in room E222. An informative joint presentation will be made by Kristen Griffin of the Alzheimer’s Association including “The Ten Warning Signs of Alzheimer’s” and by one of our volunteers who will relate about his and his wife’s personal experience with Alzheimer’s. There are now well over thirty members of John Wesley who participate as respite care-givers in this program. They are each anxious to, and dedicated to, helping you if you are now caring for a person with Alzheimer’s or another memory loss disease. If you think this might be of help to you, or you just want to know 4

Mentor One Child…Change Two Lives CROSSROADS: Community Partnership for Youth Inc. (CROSSROADS), a United Way agency, provides mentoring for youth involved with the Harris County Juvenile Probation Department. These youth are in need of caring adults who can serve as mentors to provide encouragement and guidance. With thousands in the juvenile justice system, the need for mentors is growing. Mentors must be at least 21 years of age, commit to 1 hour each week and attend a training and orientation session. There are many sites, areas (Katy, Clear Lake, Chimney Rock/Bellaire, and Downtown) and available times of the week for mentors to meet with their assigned child. Volunteers mentor boys and girls that are placed in facilities by the juvenile probation department and who are in desperate need of a positive role model. The program is very simple, flexible and especially beneficially to both the youth and the mentor. Please consider devoting just one hour a week to the future of a needy and hurting child (10 – 17 yrs. old). Many times you may be the only positive role model in their lives! The mission of CROSSROADS is to prevent or reduce youth involvement with the juvenile justice system by fostering positive relationships between youth and volunteers. CROSSROADS is symbolic of where the youth we serve are standing - at a critical point in time in their lives. For more information you may contact us at 713-295-2779 or visit our website at www.crossroads-volunteers.org.
