• DO…Accompany trick-or-treaters younger than age 12. Encourage older kids to trick-or-treat with a group of friends, parents or older siblings. Make sure someone in the group carries a flashlight with fresh batteries. • DO…Stay close to home. Don’t allow your child to go door to door in an unfamiliar neighborhood. • DO…Set ground rules. If your child will be trick-or-treating without you, establish a route and set a curfew. • DO…Inspect treats carefully. Don’t let your child snack while he or she is trick-or-treating. Discard anything that’s not sealed, has torn packaging or looks questionable. • DO…Turn the lights on at your home if you’re prepared to accept trick-or-treaters. • DO…Remain visible. Dress your kids in a bright costume so others can see them. (Continued on Page 3) Lakemont Living - October 2011

Pumpkin Carving 101 Fall is here and pumpkin carving has been a favorite past time of families for centuries. Some like to keep it simple, some go over-thetop but one thing is for certain a good jack-o-lantern is in the details. HERE ARE 7 EASY STEPS TO FOLLOW:

• Pick a Pumpkin: Choose a large pumpkin. The larger the pumpkin, the easier it is to carve. Avoid any pumpkins with bruises or moldy stems as they will spoil much faster. Pumpkins with a lighter color tend to be softer and easier to carve. • Get the Right Tools: Various hand tools can be used during the carving, like the readily available carving tool kits, but the essentials of small poker, sharp paring knife, small saw and a sturdy ice cream scoop will get the job done. • Make the Cut: Create an opening in the top of the pumpkin with your knife ensuring the hole is big enough for you to easily reach inside and clean it out. When cutting be sure to angle the blade towards the middle of the pumpkin. This will allow you easily put the top back on afterward. • A Clean Scoop: Use your scooping device to clean out the inside of the pumpkin. To make the carving easy scrape the inside of the pumpkin to be about 1” thick in the areas where you’ll be carving. If you are not sure of the thickness use a thumbtack as a gauge. • Stencil It: There are lots of patterns out there. Find one you like online, print it out and tape it to the pumpkin. Afterward use a poking device to trace the pattern onto the pumpkin by pushing through the paper until the stencil is transferred. Remove the paper. • Connect the Dots: Take your small saw and start connecting the dots. This is the fun part as you start to see your pumpkin take shape. Go slow here and take your time - especially on the sharp turns. But don’t worry if you make a mistake. If you cut out a piece you shouldn’t have use some tooth picks to put it back into place. • Let There be Light: Now that your masterpiece is completed put a small candle or light inside, put on the top, step back and admire your handiwork.

We will continue to schedule “Lakemont Clean-Up Days’’ so everyone can participate. Thanks for your time and efforts as we strive to keep Lakemont clean and beautiful. LAKEMONT QUILTING BEES Come join the newly formed Quilting Bees of Lakemont who meet every second Tuesday and last Sunday of each month at the Lakehouse from 1pm – 5pm. If you are interested in quilting the group provides an opportunity for quilters, both beginners and experienced, to share their experience and knowledge with each other. We help new quilters get started quilting either by machine or by hand. Below are the scheduled meeting dates. We will work on community service projects that provide quilted items to charitable organizations around Houston and its surrounding areas. Residents who participate are responsible for providing their own tools, fabric, and sewing machine. Materials used for community projects will be donated by participants of the quilting bee on a voluntary basis. Children must be accompanied by an adult since there will be access to sharp objects and sewing machines. For more information, please contact Michelle Hudson (hudson.michelle@ att.net). All residents of Lakemont are invited to join the Bees. DO YOU KAJUKEMBO? Lakemont is excited to offer classes on Saturdays from 9-11am at the Lakehouse for this self-defense method. If you ever wanted to explore Copyright © 2011 Peel, Inc.

martial arts here is your chance to experience the art of pure selfdefense. Learn how to defend and protect yourself, your family and your neighbors through the Hawaiian method of KAJUKEMBO. KA – Karate JU – Judo, Jujitsu KEM – Kempo Bo – Kung fu Please contact Sifu Pat Brown at brownspeed@sbcglobal.net for additional information. It is free and open to all Lakemont residents (17+ years old). NEW PET WASTE STATIONS INSTALLED Please clean up after your dogs. Doggie stations with dog waste bags have been installed along the lake by pool #1 and pool #2 to help you pick up after your pets. Together we can keep Lakemont clean and make it the best place to live. INTERESTED IN A FREE HOME SECURITY INSPECTION? A neighborhood crime watch can help keep track of criminal activity that may occur outside the house but the first line of defense in home security is making sure your home is safe and secure. Strong locks, burglar alarms, and dogs are all excellent for discouraging potential intruders. Burglars want to get in and out of a residence quickly and don’t want to attract attention by setting off alarms, dealing with dogs or taking time to break through a lock. To participate in the program, please contact your Block Captain or your Neighborhood Watch Committee at LakemontWatch@ yahoo.com to sign up. FBC Sheriff’s Office Crime Prevention Unit is offering this FREE service to Lakemont residents. 2011 LAKEMONT CALENDAR OF EVENTS KAJUKEMBO.................................................... Lakemont Living Spooky Halloween Treats HOT DOG MUMMIES Ingredients 1 – 11 ounce can of refrigerator breadsticks 1 – 12 pack of hot dogs Yellow mustard Instructions For each mummy, separate one breadstick from the roll and use kitchen shears or a knife to slice it in half lengthwise to create two thinner strips. Wrap one strip at a time snugly around the hot dog. Depending on the size of the hot dog, you may not need all of both strips. Leave about 1/2 inch of hot dog exposed for the face area and continue wrapping the top of the hot dog. Bake the mummies on a cookie sheet at 350º for 15 to 18 minutes or until the breadstick wrapping is golden brown. Remove the mummies from the oven and cool them for 5 minutes. Add yellow mustard eyes just before serving. Makes 12 mummies.
