Message from: the Executive Chair

Otavia Rhone, Executive Committee Chair Crime Alert – We have had a couple of incidents in the last 40 days where young girls in the community are trying to be lured into a vehicle by a stranger. The second incident happened on the morning of Sept. 2 around a bus stop area in Meadows 1. I have observed first hand in the mornings (I walk every morning) our children on the corners waiting for the bus in the dark, all alone. We need to band together as a community and not make our children prey for these individuals. Parents, this is a call for you to wait at the stop with your child and see them off. If this is not an option, then we need to have parents link up and at the very least get the children waiting in pairs as safety comes in groups. I would advise parents that will be doing this to call the school and make sure their child’s pick up spot is changed so the bus will not be waiting at a old spot. Community, this is a request to turn on your porch lights. This will help the lighting on the street for these children. When the time changes, it is not going to get any better. If we do not take charge and be proactive, I fear that a child will be picked up by the stranger. We have been fortunate enough that these two girls were aware and did not get in the stranger’s car. I have spoken with Constable JB, and they are going to work on patrolling the neighborhood during that time frame. PLEASE do not think that this will eliminate the problem. We have been warned and now it is time to take action. The authorities cannot eliminate this issue alone. We have to band together (Continued on Page 3)
